A liquor and beverage consumption policy was created in order for Carnival to be able to control the liquor consumption of minors and the quantities consumed that lead to the disruptive behavior of others on board.

Bringing Alcohol On Board - Embarkation Day

What items am I not allowed to bring?

Prohibited Items:

  • Alcohol (hard liquor) and beer
  • Wine or champagne beyond the allowable limit of one 750 ml bottle per adult (18 years of age or older)
  • Non-alcoholic beverages in containers other than a can or carton; excessive quantities per person (over 12 cans/cartons per person); exessive size per can/carton (over 375 ml each)

Carnival's Liquor and Beverage policy states that the guests are prohibited from bringing water, sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages on board that are packed in bottles. What is Carnival's liquor and beverage policy?

Guests are prohibited from bringing water, sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages that are packaged in glass or plastic bottles.

On embarkation day, a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, energy drinks, juice, and milk), packaged in cans or cartons, may be brought on board and must be in the guest's carry-on luggage. A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 375-ml each or less, per person.

Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board with the following exception - at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, guests (18 years of age and older) may bring one 750-ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne, per person, in their carry-on luggage. Outside this exception, all liquor, beer, other forms of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage and such items will be confiscated and discarded and no compensation will be provided . Guests sailing with us on back-to-back cruises are entitled to bring the same quantity as stated in this policy, per cruise. The additional quantities will be stored for safekeeping at the start of the first cruise and will be given to the guest as each following cruise begins.

Corkage Fee:

Should guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in the main dining room, specialty restaurant or bar, a $15.00 AUD corkage fee, per 750-ml bottle, will be charged. A corkage fee is a charge that is assessed, at time of service, for every bottle that is served and not bought on the premises.

Large cooler restrictions : Carnival Cruise Line does not allow guests to bring large coolers on board its ships. However small, personal-sized coolers, no larger than 30x30x30cm for the purpose of housing small quantities of non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications are permitted as carry-on luggage. Screening and movement of large coolers through embarkation is an impediment to the boarding and security screening process. Therefore, large coolers are not permitted as carry-on or checked luggage.

Ports-of-Call : Alcoholic beverages of any kind purchased in any Port-of-Call will be retained at the gangway, stored on board and held by Carnival until the end of the voyage.

Drinking Alcohol On Board : The minimum age for the purchase and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages in the bars, lounges and gift shops is 18 years of age. In the event that Bar/Restaurant/Gift Shop staff are in question that a guest is less than 18 years old, they shall request picture identification, prior to serving the drink or selling the bottle of liquor. Carnival reserves the right to refuse the sale of alcoholic beverages to anyone.

Carnival Cruise Drink Policies

Carnival Cruise Drink Policies

Carnival Cruise Line has specific drink policies in place to ensure that all guests have a safe and enjoyable experience on board. These policies are also designed to comply with the laws and regulations of the various ports of call where the cruise ships dock. Understanding these rules can help you avoid any surprises and potential consequences.

What You Can Bring Onboard

One of the most common questions for cruise-goers is about bringing their own beverages on board. Carnival Cruise permits passengers to bring a restricted quantity of non-alcoholic drinks and wine or champagne aboard. Specifically, guests can carry up to 12 sealed cans or cartons (each 12 ounces) of non-alcoholic drinks like sodas, juices, and milk. Additionally, each adult (21 or older) is allowed one wine or champagne bottle, no larger than 750 ml.

It’s essential to note that these drinks must be carried in your carry-on luggage during embarkation. If any drinks are found in your checked luggage, they can possibly be confiscated.

Consequences of Breaking the Rules

If you are found in violation of Carnival’s drink policies, there can be consequences. For example, if you bring alcohol onboard beyond the allowed one bottle of wine or champagne, it will be confiscated and stored until the end of the cruise. In cases of excessive violations or if underage drinking is involved, you may face more severe consequences, such as being removed from the ship , facing fines , or even being banned from future cruises .

Tips for Complying with Drink Policies

Complying with Carnival’s drink policies is quite straightforward. Here are some tips to avoid any issues:

💡 Read and understand the policies : Make sure you are familiar with the drink policies before you board the ship.

💡 Limit your carry-ons : Stick to the allowed quantities and types of drinks in your carry-on luggage.

💡 Avoid sneaking alcohol : Attempts to sneak alcohol on board in water bottles or other containers are often detected by security.

💡 Respect the legal drinking age : The minimum drinking age is 21 on a Cruise ship. Make sure to carry a valid ID if you plan to consume alcohol.

💡 Drink responsibly : While enjoying your time at sea, remember to drink responsibly and consider your fellow passengers.

Complying with Carnival's drink policies

Following these tips will help you stay within the rules and enjoy your cruise to the fullest. After all, cruising Carnival is all about having a good time without any worries.

Are Drinks Included in the Cruise Fare?

When you book a cruise with Carnival Cruise Line , you’ll find that some beverages are included in your cruise fare, while others are not. Understanding what’s included can help you manage your budget more effectively during your voyage.

Included in your cruise fare are basic beverages like tap water, tea, coffee, and some juices that are available in the main dining room and buffet area. These drinks are free and unlimited. On the other hand, alcoholic beverages , soda, bottled water, specialty coffees, and other premium drinks are not included in the cruise fare. You will need to pay extra for these, either à la carte or through one of Carnival’s drink packages.

Can You Share a Drink Package?

Sharing drink packages on Carnival ships is not allowed . When you purchase a package, it is tied specifically to your boarding card, and you can’t transfer or share it with other guests. Each guest must purchase their own drink package.

Attempting to share your drink package with others could result in penalties or even revocation of your drink package without a refund. It’s important to follow the rules and only use your drink package for your own consumption.

How to Save Money on Drinks

If you enjoy indulging in beverages while cruising, here are some tips to help you save money on drinks during a cruise on a Carnival ship:

  • Take advantage of the “Cheers” package : If you plan to drink a lot, the “Cheers” package can offer substantial savings. Just be sure to calculate your likely consumption to ensure that it’s cost-effective.
  • Bring your own wine or champagne : Carnival allows each guest to bring one bottle of wine or champagne on board. Enjoying your own bottle can save you money compared to purchasing wine on the ship.
  • Look for drink specials : Keep an eye out for daily drink specials or happy hours at the ship’s bars. These can offer significant discounts on popular beverages.
  • Limit soda consumption : If you’re a soda drinker, consider limiting your consumption or opting for the “Bottomless Bubbles” package for limitless soda and juices.
  • Stick to the included beverages : You can save money by sticking to the drinks included in your cruise fares, such as tap water, coffee, tea, and some juices.

By following these tips, you can enjoy your favorite drinks on Carnival ships without breaking the bank.

💡 Carry a water bottle : Keep a refillable water bottle with you and sip water throughout the day. Carnival provides water stations where you can refill your bottle.

💡 Limit your alcohol consumption : Moderation is key. Overindulging can lead to dehydration and other unpleasant effects.

Answered: First Day Drink Packages and Alcohol on Galveston Cruises

Drink packages are supposed to make things easier. Instead of having to budget and keep an eye on what you are spending, you simply pay one daily fee and drink your fill. Want a beer when you step on board? Just order it and get back to enjoying your cruise. Want a margarita while you sit poolside? Step up to the bar and it’s yours — no additional payments required.

And for the most part, the drink packages are simple and work exactly as planned. You can purchase the package, step on board the ship on the first day of the cruise and start getting your money’s worth. If you want a drink, you order it. Couldn’t be simpler, right?

Well, cruises from Galveston are a little different. There are special rules that apply to selling alcohol in Texas that have an impact on your drink package and what you can order.

Special Rules for Alcohol on Texas Cruise Ships

Galveston cruise terminal signs

Search around the Internet and you’ll find all sorts of questions about drink packages for cruising from Galveston. Rumors and hearsay have run rampant across the Internet for years as passengers tell their stories. Meanwhile, Carnival and Royal Caribbean (the two lines that sail from the island) have different policies regarding alcohol while in Texas waters that causes even more confusion.

That’s why we spoke with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) — the body that regulates the sale of alcohol in Texas — as well as cruise line representatives to get the details on cruise line policy and Texas laws surrounding drink packages.

What follows is each cruise line’s policy about selling alcohol on the first day of a cruise from Galveston, plus details on the Texas laws that are behind the policies.

Carnival’s Policy Regarding Drink Packages and Alcohol in Galveston

Galveston Cruise Terminal building

First things first. If you purchase a drink package on a Carnival cruise departing Galveston, it will not be in effect until the next morning . So if you sail away on Sunday, you won’t be able to use your drink package (even if purchased ahead of time) until Monday morning. Don’t worry, you aren’t charged for this day. So a drink package on a 7-day cruise actually gets charged for six days.

This policy is clearly laid out on Carnival’s website , which says “Due to state laws, we cannot sell CHEERS! until the second day of the cruise (starting at 6:00am) for voyages departing from our Texas and New York home ports. Drinks purchased on the first day of the cruise will be charged to the guest’s Sail & Sign® card in the usual manner. When purchased on the second day of the cruise, guests are charged for the remaining days only (cruise duration less one day).”

The good news for cruise passengers?

You can still purchase alcohol when you first get on the ship. However, you should know that the menu is limited until the ship sails beyond Texas waters.  According to a statement from a company representative:

“Carnival offers special drink menus that are in compliance with Texas state laws for the time we are sailing in Texas waters.”

You’ll still find plenty to drink during this time, but if you like a specific brand, it may not be available until the ship leaves state waters. (This takes about two hours from the time you depart the Port of Galveston.)

Royal Caribbean’s Policy Regarding Drink Packages and Alcohol in Galveston

Royal Caribbean Ship in Galveston

If you sail on Royal Caribbean (Liberty of the Seas), then our understanding is you can use a drink package from the moment you step on the ship. While this has been mentioned regularly around the Internet, we tried to confirm it by pricing out the package for an upcoming 7-day cruise (we were quoted the daily price times the number of days in the cruise), as well as calling a Royal Caribbean representative to ask directly. We were told there is no waiting period for the package.

In addition, there is no special mention of drink package restrictions for Galveston cruises as found on Carnival’s website.

Like Carnival, Royal Caribbean does offer a limited alcoholic drink menu while in Texas . Below is an image of the menu while the ship is in Texas waters.

Limited menu aboard Royal Caribbean ship

While the menu still offers plenty of variety — including several beers and many mixed drinks — everything the ship serves while at sea isn’t available while in Texas waters.

Understanding the “Why” Behind These Restrictions

So why do the cruise lines have policies about selling drink packages on the second day and having limited menus?

To find out, we contacted the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC). While the TABC couldn’t comment on specific cruise line policies, they did shed light on rules surrounding drink packages and limited menus.

Drink Packages According to a spokesman for the TABC:

“State law and TABC rules prohibit any practice which could reasonably be interpreted to allow or encourage overconsumption of alcohol. This includes “all you can drink” packages or other promotions which allow unlimited alcohol for a buy-in price . These standards would apply to any alcoholic beverages served or sold within Texas territory, including any waters over which Texas claims jurisdiction. Once a vessel is outside of Texas territory, the state’s laws no longer apply.”

This appears to be the reason that Carnival waits to sell their drink package until the morning after sailaway from Galveston.

But what about Royal Caribbean? Frankly, we’re not sure. It seems that offering the drink package while the ship is still in Texas waters wouldn’t be allowed given Texas laws. However, there may be special circumstances that allow the cruise line to comply with the law for its specific situation.

An email to the cruise line asking for more information about their policies was not answered.

Limited Menus We also asked the TABC about limited menus and why they might be offered. According to the agency:

“Like any business which holds a Texas permit to sell alcohol, any alcohol sold by the cruise lines while in Texas must comply with the state’s alcohol laws. Sec. 28.07 of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code requires that any holder of a Mixed Beverage Permit (the permit most commonly used by the cruise lines) must obtain their alcohol inventory from the holder of a Local Distributor’s Permit . Again, once the vessel is in international waters, these requirements no longer apply.”

In other words, if the cruise line didn’t get their beverages from a local distributor, then it’s our understanding that they can’t sell them in Texas.

Should they obtain alcohol from an outside source (for instance, because it is less expensive — or duty free — from another source) then our interpretation is that it would be illegal to serve this while in Texas waters. However, once in international waters the cruise line would be free to serve the “out-of-state” alcohol.

This seems to be reason for the limited menu. In fact, Royal Caribbean mentions “We will only be serving Texas liquor at these bars until out of Texas waters” in their Cruise Compass information guide on embarkation day.

Remember: Restrictions Are Only Temporary

While we’ve spent a lot of time covering the ins and outs of drink packages and limited menus when sailing from Galveston, it’s actually quite simple. Both cruise lines have limited drink menus until out of Texas waters. Carnival makes passengers wait until the morning after sailaway to use a drink package. Royal Caribbean allows the use of drink packages right from the start.

Just don’t be surprised if you can’t get your favorite drink the moment you step on board. You might have to wait a couple of hours.

How does this apply to non alcohol drinks

It doesn’t at all.

What do you know about NCL drink package? I haven’t been able to find out anything when searching. Debarkation would be Texas. Thank you for any help.

Good morning. If I understand correctly, you can purchase alcoholic beverages directly on day one, but you cannot use the beverage package to purchase alcoholic beverages on day one. With total respect, can someone please explain this?

My understanding is that TABC (Texas authority on alcohol) does not allow “all you can drink” packages in the state. So Carnival waits until day 2.

it seems that you can’t sell in “Packages” in Texas waters. Royal can pre sell the packages which means its purchased before you even arrive on board. You just can’t “BUY” the packages the day of.

So you’re charged for the two days you can’t use it

No. The first day on the ship you can’t use it, and you aren’t charged. You also aren’t charged the day of debarkation.

Gotta get a clarified answer as to why you can use Royal Caribbean’s drink package, but not Carnival’s. Do any other cruise lines port in Texas ever?

We’re not sure why. From our understanding, neither should be able to offer a drink package until they are out of Texas waters. Disney also sails from Texas on a seasonal basis.

We contacted Carnival about the Texas Law and was OK with it, however they would be charging us for 5 days, which we paid for in advance, not 4 days, which is what we will actually get. About a $250 ripoff for 5 people booked on our cruise.

Mike, you might want to call back. Given how specific the law is, it’s common for confusion. Here’s the policy on their website ( https://www.carnival.com/help/2633 ):

Due to state laws, we cannot sell CHEERS! until the second day of the cruise (starting at 6:00am) for voyages departing from our Texas and New York home ports. Drinks purchased on the first day of the cruise will be charged to the guest’s Sail & Sign® card in the usual manner. When purchased on the second day of the cruise, guests are charged for the remaining days only (cruise duration less one day)

Exploring Carnival Cruise Line’S 15 Drink Limit Policy

carnival cruise drink rules

Cruising with Carnival is all about fun, but with alcohol often flowing freely onboard, some reasonable limitations apply. Carnival Cruise Line has implemented a 15 drink per day limit as a responsible measure to encourage moderate consumption and maintain a pleasant environment for all guests.

If you’re short on time, here’s a quick answer: Carnival Cruise Line has set a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per passenger, per day in an effort to promote responsible consumption . This policy applies to adult passengers only and excludes wine purchased with dinner.

In this comprehensive guide, we will cover all aspects of Carnival’s 15 drink limit including how it works, what counts towards the limit, how it is enforced, tips for staying within the limits, exemptions, frequently asked questions, and opinions on the policy.

Understanding Carnival’s 15 Drink Limit Policy

When the 15 drink limit policy was implemented.

Carnival Cruise Line implemented the 15 Drink Limit Policy in September 2018 as a measure to promote responsible alcohol consumption among its passengers. This policy applies to all guests aged 21 and above.

It is important to note that the limit includes all alcoholic beverages consumed on board, including those purchased at bars, restaurants, and through room service.

Before the implementation of this policy, guests were able to consume unlimited alcoholic beverages during their cruise. However, Carnival recognized the need to establish a limit to ensure the safety and well-being of its passengers.

The 15 Drink Limit Policy aims to prevent excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to disruptive behavior, accidents, and health issues.

Why Carnival Implemented this Policy

Carnival Cruise Line, like other cruise operators, has a responsibility to prioritize the safety and security of its passengers. Excessive alcohol consumption can not only pose risks to individuals but also impact the overall experience of other guests on board.

By implementing the 15 Drink Limit Policy, Carnival aims to create a safe and enjoyable environment for all passengers.

Additionally, this policy helps Carnival comply with international maritime regulations and guidelines regarding alcohol consumption. These regulations are in place to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew members, as well as to maintain the integrity of the cruise industry as a whole.

How the 15 Drink Limit is Monitored and Enforced

Carnival Cruise Line has implemented various measures to monitor and enforce the 15 Drink Limit Policy. Bar staff and servers are trained to keep track of the number of drinks consumed by each guest. They will request identification and scan the guest’s Sail & Sign card each time a drink is purchased.

In addition to the vigilant staff, Carnival utilizes a sophisticated computerized system that tracks and records the number of drinks consumed by each guest. This system helps ensure that the 15 drink limit is not exceeded throughout the duration of the cruise.

If a guest reaches their 15 drink limit, they will no longer be able to purchase alcoholic beverages on board. Carnival encourages responsible drinking and offers a variety of non-alcoholic beverage options for guests to enjoy.

It’s important for passengers to be aware of and understand the 15 Drink Limit Policy before embarking on a Carnival cruise. By adhering to this policy, guests can help create a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone on board.

What Counts Towards the 15 Drink Limit

Carnival Cruise Line’s 15 drink limit policy is an important aspect of their onboard experience. It is essential for passengers to understand what counts towards this limit to ensure a smooth and enjoyable vacation.

Alcoholic Beverages Included in the Limit

When it comes to the 15 drink limit, it’s important to note that it applies to alcoholic beverages only. This includes a wide range of options such as cocktails, beer, wine, and spirits. Each time a passenger orders an alcoholic drink, it will be counted towards their total for the day.

However, it’s worth mentioning that Carnival Cruise Line does not restrict the type of alcoholic beverages one can consume. Whether it’s a refreshing mojito by the pool or a sophisticated glass of wine at dinner, all alcoholic drinks are included in the 15 drink limit.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Exceptions

Non-alcoholic beverages, on the other hand, do not count towards the 15 drink limit. This means that passengers can enjoy unlimited amounts of soda, water, coffee, tea, and other non-alcoholic options without worrying about exceeding their drink limit.

Additionally, there are some exceptions to the 15 drink limit policy. Carnival Cruise Line allows guests to bring one bottle of wine or champagne per person onboard during embarkation. This bottle is not included in the 15 drink limit and can be enjoyed at any time during the cruise.

Drink Packages and the 15 Drink Maximum

Carnival Cruise Line offers various drink packages that can be purchased before or during the cruise. These packages provide guests with the convenience of unlimited drinks within a specific time frame or throughout the entire voyage.

It’s important to note that even with a drink package, the 15 drink limit still applies. The package allows passengers to enjoy unlimited drinks within the package’s parameters, but any additional alcoholic beverages consumed beyond the package’s limits will be counted towards the 15 drink maximum.

Guests who opt for a drink package should keep track of their consumption to ensure they don’t exceed the 15 drink limit and avoid any additional charges.

Understanding what counts towards the 15 drink limit is crucial for passengers on a Carnival Cruise Line vacation. By being aware of the policy and making informed choices, guests can enjoy their favorite beverages responsibly while having an amazing time onboard.

Tips for Staying Within the 15 Drink Limit

Pace yourself and stay hydrated.

When it comes to enjoying your time onboard a Carnival cruise ship while abiding by the 15 drink limit policy, pacing yourself is key. It’s important to remember that the goal is to have a great time without overindulging.

Start by setting a limit for yourself, such as one drink per hour, to ensure you don’t exceed the limit. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking water in between alcoholic beverages can help you maintain a steady pace and prevent dehydration.

Order Wisely at Bars and Restaurants

When ordering drinks at bars and restaurants onboard, it’s important to make mindful choices to stay within the 15 drink limit. Consider opting for lower alcohol content options, such as light beers or mixed drinks with less alcohol.

This way, you can enjoy a variety of beverages without consuming excessive amounts of alcohol. It’s also a good idea to alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to pace yourself and keep your alcohol intake in check.

Consider Lower Alcohol Content Options

There are plenty of delicious options available on Carnival cruise ships that have lower alcohol content. For example, you can try refreshing mocktails or choose beverages with a lower percentage of alcohol.

This way, you can still enjoy the social aspect of having a drink while staying within the 15 drink limit. Be sure to ask the bartenders for recommendations or explore the ship’s menu for these alternatives.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your Carnival cruise experience while staying within the 15 drink limit. Remember to drink responsibly and prioritize your well-being throughout your vacation. Cheers to a fantastic time aboard!

Opinions on Carnival’s Drink Limit Policy

Supporters appreciate the measured approach.

Carnival Cruise Line’s drink limit policy has garnered support from many passengers who appreciate the cruise line’s measured approach to alcohol consumption. Supporters argue that the policy promotes responsible drinking and ensures the safety and well-being of all passengers on board.

One of the main reasons supporters appreciate the drink limit policy is because it helps prevent excessive alcohol consumption. By setting a limit of 15 drinks per day, Carnival aims to prevent passengers from overindulging and potentially causing disruptive behavior or health issues.

This helps create a more enjoyable and peaceful environment for all passengers on the cruise.

Additionally, supporters argue that the drink limit policy contributes to a safer cruise experience. By monitoring alcohol consumption, Carnival can identify passengers who may be intoxicated and take appropriate action to prevent any potential incidents or accidents.

This proactive approach enhances the overall safety and security of the cruise, giving passengers peace of mind throughout their vacation.

Furthermore, some supporters appreciate the drink limit policy because it encourages passengers to explore other activities and amenities offered on the cruise ship. Instead of solely focusing on alcohol consumption, passengers are encouraged to participate in various entertainment options, such as live shows, spa treatments, or sports activities.

This helps diversify the cruise experience and allows passengers to fully enjoy all the amenities available on board.

Critics Feel it’s Too Restrictive

Despite the support for Carnival’s drink limit policy, there are critics who feel that it is too restrictive and infringes upon their freedom to consume alcohol as they please during their vacation.

Some critics argue that 15 drinks per day may not be enough for passengers who enjoy a more relaxed and leisurely drinking experience. They feel that the policy assumes all passengers have the same drinking habits and fails to account for individual preferences and tolerance levels.

Critics believe that adults should be able to make their own choices regarding alcohol consumption, as long as they do not disrupt the overall cruise experience for others.

Furthermore, critics question the effectiveness of the drink limit policy, suggesting that it may be easily circumvented by sharing drinks or consuming alcoholic beverages purchased off the ship. They argue that the policy may only penalize responsible drinkers who adhere to the rules, while those who wish to consume more alcohol can find ways to bypass the limit.

It’s important to note that Carnival Cruise Line has implemented the drink limit policy with the intention of promoting responsible drinking and ensuring a safe and enjoyable cruise experience for all passengers.

While supporters appreciate the measured approach, critics believe it may be too restrictive. Ultimately, the drink limit policy remains a subject of debate among passengers and continues to shape the overall cruise experience on Carnival ships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the limit apply to wine purchased with dinner.

Yes, the 15 drink limit policy on a Carnival Cruise applies to all alcoholic beverages, including wine purchased with dinner. This means that if you have already consumed 15 drinks throughout the day, you will not be able to order any more alcoholic beverages, regardless of the type or occasion.

What Happens if I Order More Than 15 Drinks in a Day?

If you attempt to order more than 15 drinks in a day on a Carnival Cruise, you may be refused service. The cruise line takes the safety and well-being of its passengers seriously, and this policy is in place to ensure responsible alcohol consumption.

It is important to note that this policy is for your own safety and the safety of others onboard.

If you find yourself reaching the drink limit, don’t worry! There are plenty of other non-alcoholic beverage options available on the ship. Carnival Cruise Line offers a variety of refreshing mocktails, juices, and soft drinks that you can enjoy throughout your cruise.

Can I Purchase Multiple Drink Packages to Exceed the Limit?

No, purchasing multiple drink packages does not allow you to exceed the 15 drink limit. The policy applies to each individual guest and cannot be circumvented by purchasing multiple packages. Carnival Cruise Line closely monitors the consumption of alcoholic beverages to ensure compliance with their policies.

It is important to remember that the 15 drink limit is in place to promote responsible drinking and ensure the safety of all passengers. Carnival Cruise Line wants everyone to have an enjoyable and safe vacation experience, and adhering to this policy helps to achieve that goal.

While Carnival Cruise Line’s 15 drink limit per passenger, per day may seem strict to some, it comes from a reasonable desire to encourage moderate alcohol consumption onboard. For many cruisers, staying within this limit poses no problem, but others may need to carefully consider their ordering habits.

Overall, Carnival’s policy aims to maintain a pleasant environment for all guests to enjoy their cruise experience.

I Bought the Drink Package on my Carnival Cruise. Here's What I Learned.

carnival cruise drink rules

I have a confession: For the hundreds of cruises I’ve taken, I’ve never purchased an inclusive drink package .

Usually, the rationale for refusing is that I don’t drink that much. The thought of having to imbibe up to 15 beverages per day seems an unattainable goal for me, even though I do have a fondness for cold beers, pool drinks and wine with dinner when I am at sea.

But when I embarked Carnival Cruise Line’ s Carnival Conquest for a quick weekend jaunt from Miami to Bimini and back, I was thinking about purchasing a drink package. That idea germinated when I ordered my first drink, just before dinner: a pint of Carnival’s ThirstyFrog Red Ale.

For my three-day cruise to the Bahamas, the total price to purchase Carnival’s Cheers! Package onboard was $265.32, including 18% gratuity. For the price of admission, I’d get alcoholic beverages priced up to $20, soft drinks, bottled water, specialty coffees, teas and juices – not to mention all manner of mocktails and nonalcoholic beverages like soft drinks – for one pre-determined price.

Staring down at the receipt for my $10 pint of ThirstyFrog ale, this seemed like a good value. And while the cost of drink packages can vary dramatically from line to line (and even sailing to sailing), this seemed like a good deal. Paying $10 for a beer was stressing me out, and now that cruise lines have smartphone apps, I didn’t even need to leave my bar stool: a few taps, and I was the proud owner of Carnival’s Cheers! Drink package for the next three days.

Here's what I learned – and whether I’d purchase a cruise drink package again:

On This Page

  • I Drank More Than I Normally Would Have With my Drink Package
  • Purchasing a Drink Package Offered Peace of Mind – and Budget
  • The Value of the Drink Package Decreases Every Time You Add Someone Else to Your Cabin
  • Would I Buy a Drink Package Again? Should You?

1. I Drank More Than I Normally Would Have With my Drink Package

Piano bar libations (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Drink package in hand, I ordered a second pint of ThirstyFrog in the Atrium Bar while listening to the strings trio play classical hits. Seeing the bill print out with a balance of $0.00 was a bit of a rush I wasn’t expecting. I’ve been on luxury cruises where the alcohol is included, but this is Carnival! For some reason, the fact I’d paid for this package made it seem, well, fun.

Throughout the evening, I enjoyed several more drinks: cocktails in the Piano Bar, a martini in the Punchliner Comedy Club during the late-night comedy set. Wine with dinner. I also used the package to purchase bottles of water to accompany the drinks – some hydration to ensure I didn’t wake up the next day feeling unpleasant. Carnival states you can only order one drink at a time, but servers usually let you order two in one go if one beverage is nonalcoholic.

And yet, with the piano bar hopping and the music playing, I found myself ordering another martini at last call. In no way did I need this martini. Had I been paying $16 a pop for these, I would have probably stopped two drinks prior. Still, I found myself saying yes to a last-call special – simply because I could.

Knowing when to stop – and how to think about the drink package, especially when you’re surrounded by people who are practically shot-gunning martinis and frozen concoctions – is one of the hardest aspects of having the package. Merely having it encourages overconsumption. In the “old days,” when you just had to pay per-beverage, the financial part of your brain would kick in: Do you really need another $16 martini?

With the drink package, you’re good to go until you reach your limit – whether you can handle that amount of alcohol or not. And far be it from me to judge: To each their own. But I noticed I let things run away from me on my first day, and thereafter made a conscious effort to think of the package as peace of mind rather than a drink limit to hit for the sake of it. Because even after a first day where I indulged more than I wanted to, I came in $13 short of hitting the daily package price.

2. Purchasing a Drink Package Offered Peace of Mind – and Budget

My first "included" drink aboard Carnival Conquest (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

After popping a couple Tylenol the next morning, I took a different approach to having Carnival’s Cheers! Drink package: I’d stop trying to figure out the “value” of each drink and how close I was to hitting the daily package price.

My first order of the day: a stop at the JavaBlue Café on Promenade Deck 5 for a cappuccino. I do this every morning on Carnival cruises, and it was nice to not pay $6 – or, at least, to not worry about paying $6. I even ordered a sparkling water – another small but nice indulgence – and didn’t think twice about it.

Now, is a $6 coffee and a $3.50 bottle of Perrier making “good use” of the package, financially? No, probably not. But was it nice to not worry about how much it cost? You bet. And herein lies what became the best aspect of having Carnival’s Cheers! Beverage package for me: knowing exactly what my bar bill – alcoholic or not – would amount to on this cruise.

By purchasing the beverage package, I knew what I’d walk off the ship owing, barring extra purchases like shore excursions, spa treatments and the like. I’ve been on some cruises where I’ve looked at my onboard account statement and thought, “Jeez, I should have bought the drink package.” This wouldn’t be that cruise.

And as my second day wore on, the more convinced I became that this – not the 15 drinks per day – is the biggest advantage to purchasing the drink package: you know what you’re paying right up front.

I also used the drink package to be more adventurous with my beverage choices: I tried some mocktails and cocktails I wasn’t sure I’d like, just for the heck of it. If I didn’t like it, I knew I could always discard it and pick something else without a $16 charge hanging over my head for my poor menu selections.

However, our last day – a port stop in Bimini, Bahamas – definitely didn’t eek out as much value, as I only ordered a few drinks. Knowing I could have saved some money on this port-intensive day did give me pause.

3. The Value of the Drink Package Decreases Every Time You Add Someone Else to Your Cabin

A refreshing pool deck beer comes included with a drink package (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

Here’s the biggest stumbling block, to my mind, of cruise line drink packages: everyone in your stateroom who is of age must also purchase the drink package.

That’s fine and dandy if you and your friend, spouse, or partner both drink at roughly the same level. Few couples I’ve met, though, actually do.

I was travelling solo on this cruise, which made adding the drink package a no-brainer. But if I added a friend to my cabin, that $265 Cheers! Beverage package becomes $530. If there are three adults in a cabin, it becomes $795 – and that’s likely more than most people paid for a cruise of this length in an entry-level stateroom.

So even if I drink enough to get the value out of the program, my cabin mates – who are forced into also purchasing it so I can imbibe with impunity – may not extract the same level of value from that same package. Worse, they may end up in a situation where they feel compelled to drink – and that’s never a good thing.

4. Would I Buy a Drink Package Again? Should You?

The Alchemy Bar is a popular hotspot at night for the cocktail set (Photo: Aaron Saunders)

So, we’ve arrived at the million-cocktail question: Would I buy another drink package?

For me, the answer is no. I didn’t like that I felt tempted to “game” the system by drinking more or higher-cost drinks. Without a financial incentive to stop drinking, overindulgence is almost a given.

Even more curious is that this doesn’t happen to me on luxury lines where all beverages are already included in the price of your cruise. But having paid a certain amount to have all my drinks included on Carnival Conquest, I felt obligated to get the most from my purchase. And that’s the wrong way to think about having a drink package.

Now, that’s not to say you shouldn’t get the drink package on your next cruise. Only you know whether it’s the right purchase or not based on your habits and style of cruising.

For me, I’ll stick with paying as I go – and refusing that last-call martini!

It depends. What port are you leaving from? I know Galveston, maybe New York don’t allow it the first day. But that’s not a Carnival rule.. it’s up to the port.

OH I miss read the question I apologize.  I also believe there is a rule that you can only purchase one or two alcoholic drinks prior to completing your muster drill.

Keep in mind that you may be responsible for taxes for drinks purchased/utilized while in port. A lot of people don't realize this and then get upset when they have a small charge added.

It's been said that Carnival doesn't want the headache of dealing with state taxes. I know that out of Galveston, Royal lets you use it on day 1, but they have to deal with the state tax on each drink (or maybe just the package's overall price).

It amazes me that Carnival charges tax at the port when getting drinks. Yet Princess and RCCL don't charge any tax on drinks. So is Carnival keeping that tax money?

No, they don't keep it. Depending on the port, local tax laws may apply since the ship is still in U.S. waters while in port or close to shore. Once in international waters, the tax rate no longer applies. I'm sure other cruise lines are charging it as well, otherwise they could be subject to fines and other penalties from the various states and/or from the U.S. They may be combining it in the price of their drinks or you may simply have not noticed it before.

Similar reasons why the casinos and duty-free shops onboard aren't open while in port - they would be subject to local laws otherwise.

I know that last year on Horizon, when I was in the candy shop, I asked if the bottled sodas in the cooler were included on Cheers and was told "no"

Not stirring the pot at all . Just curious as to why Carnival charges drink tax in Miami and other cruise lines don't. Its a valid question. And I know they don't allow cheers from some ports on first day as that is the same for other cruise lines as well.

Every drink before international waters is charged that state's liquor tax. Carnival charges it on every drinking leaving FL until 3 miles out (or whatever the line is). NCL out of New Orleans made announcements. The first was "In 15 minutes we will be in international waters". The second was "At 7PM, we will be in US waters" It was funny how people reacted to ordering drinks. The tax per drink was like $0.18.

agreed, we have also paid taxes on drinks while in a U.S. port on other lines. It’s not a ‘carnival’ thing.

to the OP, generally you can use the drink

package on the day that you board. I think there’s only a couple disembarkation cities you can’t and that’s due to local laws. If you can’t use it the day you board, they also charge you a day less.

Did you have the drink package? We have never been charged drink taxes out of Miami with RCCL and just cruised out of there. We get the drink package so maybe thats why as its been paid for already.

Yes we had the drinks package but maybe I am mistaken...we have done a bunch of cruises from Miami since late 2021 with NCL, RCI, Carnival...maybe it was only the other 2 that charged tax.

Can You Drink On A Cruise At 18? Everything you need to know

W hen most people think about cruising, the first thing that comes to mind is drinking. And for good reason – a cruise is a great opportunity to let loose and enjoy some cocktails with friends.

But what are the rules around drinking on a cruise ship?

How old do you have to be?

Can you drink on a cruise at 18?

Can you drink in public?

And what happens if you get drunk?

As as a travel advisor who has taken many courses to become a cruise specialist, I have learned the ins and outs of cruising.

Read on for answers to all your questions about drinking on a cruise.

The answer to this question cant be answered with one single answer. The fact is, the legal drinking age on cruises depends on the cruise line and the port of embarkation.

Let’s look at the policies of a few of the most popular cruise lines .

Carnival Cruise Line

On Carnival cruise ships, alcohol consumption is only permitted for guests aged 21 and over. This rule applies to Carnival private islands such as Half Moon Cay , and Princess Cay as well.

The only exception to this rule is for Carnival Australia, where passengers 18 and over are allowed to consume and purchase alcohol.

Royal Caribbean

For sailings that begin in North American ports, the legal drinking age onboard Royal Caribbean is 21.

However, if you are sailing on Royal Caribbean from Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and Asia, the drinking age on board is 18 years old.

Royal Caribbean private islands, such as Perfect Day at Coco Cay , the drinking age will be 21 years old, no matter where the cruise started.

The legal drinking age for all alcoholic drinks on Norwegian Cruise Line ships is 21.

However, NCL does have one advantage over the other lines, and that is that in international waters passengers who are over 18 can drink beer and wine.

Like Disney, this rule only applies if the parent is on board with the minor and signs a consent form.

The legal drinking age on Disney Cruise Line is 21 with one exception.

If you are sailing from Europe, and you are sailing with a parent, that parent can sign a consent form that allows you to drink in their presence only. This option is available for guests 18-20 years old.

Celebrity Cruise Line

The legal drinking age for alcoholic beverages on all Celebrity Cruises ships sailing from North America is 21.

For guests sailing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, the minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages onboard any of our Celebrity Cruises ships is 18.

The drinking age on private islands is 21.

Can you drink at 18 on a Caribbean cruise?

The drinking age on most cruise ships is 21. If the cruise originates from a US port, the minimum age to drink on board is 21.

It is a common misconception that minors can drink on board if they are heading to a port where the drinking age is 18, but that is not the case.

You must provide identification when booking your cruise, and that information will be attached to your sail and sign card, and your age will be known by crew members. Cruise crew members will not serve underaged guests.

Can you drink at 18 on a Bahamas cruise?

No, you can not drink on board a cruise to the Bahamas if the cruise has departed from a US Port.

What about private islands in the Bahamas?

Many cruise lines have private islands in the Bahamas such as Half Moon Cay (Carnival) or Castaway Cay (Disney).

The minimum age to drink in the Bahamas is 18, so some assume that once you are on the private island, you can drink as long as you are 18.

This isn’t the case though. If you are on an island owned by the cruise line, the same rules apply as if you are still on board the ship, which means no drinking for anyone under 21.

However, if you get off the ship in a port that is not owned by the cruise line, you are able to follow the rules in that country.

For example, the drinking age in Nassau is 18. So if you have a cruise stop in Nassau Bahamas, you can drink as long as you are 18 while you are in that port.

To help clarify this:

Cruising Age2118Can I drink on board the ship?yesnoCan I drink on Private Island? yesnoCan I drink in Bimini, Nassau, or Freeport?yesyes

Are there any cruises where you can drink at 18?

Yes, cruises on certain lines like Disney , Royal Caribbean, Carnival Australia, and Celebrity that do not originate in North America you may be able to drink at 18 years old.

Can you drink at 18 in international waters?

Once you are in international waters (more than 3 miles away from US waters) you may drink on Norweigan Cruise Line if your parents sign a waiver.

If your cruise line has a no drinking under 21 policy in place, where you are located in the ocean does not change the rules.

What if I turn 21 during my cruise?

Most cruise lines determine your age based on the age you are the day you board the ship, meaning if you aren’t of drinking age when the cruise starts, you will not be able to drink for the duration of the cruise.

There are a few exceptions to this rule. Norweigan and Celebrity Cruise Lines, both allow a guest who has turned 21 during their sailing to show ID to guest services and have their age updated. Once this is approved by guest services, that passenger will be allowed to purchase alcohol for the remainder of the cruise.

Overdrinking on a cruise

No matter which cruise line you go on, you need to drink responsibly and maintain control of yourself.

Drinking too much can cause a host of problems for you. First, getting too drunk on a moving ship can make it difficult to navigate your way around safely.

You can also become dehydrated easily and become sick in the heat and humidity.

If you become so drunk that you are dangerous or disruptive to other passengers you can find yourself in trouble with ship security, and potentially authorities when you return to port.

You can be confined to your cabin, or even earn yourself a trip to the cruise jail if you become overly intoxicated.

Drinking ages on Cruises Recap

As you can see, the “typical” age that you can drink on a cruise is 21 years or older. While there are exceptions to the rule especially if your cruise does not originate in North America.

It is always best to check your cruise line’s alcohol policy before you board so you know what to expect.

Hiring a travel advisor is a great way to be sure you know all of the facts pertaining to your unique situation as well. As a cruise specialist, I am happy to help you plan your trip (at no additional cost) and help you fully understand all of the rules and regulations pertaining to your sailing and situation.

Royal caribbean vs. carnival: quick comparison chart.

Decide which line is best based on costs, food, onboard entertainment and other key factors.

Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have quite a bit in common.

Trying to choose between Royal Caribbean and Carnival for your next cruise? Check out the comparison chart below, then read on for more details.

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas side by side at sea.

Winner: Royal Caribbean

When it comes to fleet size as well as the features available on cruise ships, Royal Caribbean has an edge over Carnival Cruise Line. That's because Royal Caribbean already has 28 ships in operation, including its incredible Oasis Class, Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class ships. Oasis Class vessels like Allure of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas , Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas are some of the largest in the world – and Royal Caribbean Group is constantly rolling out new, even bigger cruise ships with better amenities and new features. For example, the new Icon of the Seas (scheduled to debut in 2024) plans to have the largest water park at sea, the largest swimming pool at sea, and a range of over-the-top cabins and suites for families of all sizes.

Meanwhile, Carnival currently operates 25 different vessels with a few more on the way. Newer ships like Carnival Celebration and Carnival Venezia aren't as large and grand as Royal Caribbean ships, nor are the brand-new vessels the company is planning for late 2023 and 2024. For example, the new Carnival Jubilee that is set to begin sailing later in 2023 will have 15 passenger decks and capacity for up to 6,631 guests, compared to 18 guest decks and 7,600 passengers on Icon of the Seas.

Comparing cabins across cruise lines as a whole isn't an easy feat, mostly because companies tend to offer larger suites and cabins with a better layout on their newer ships . You'll therefore likely have a nicer cabin on one of Carnival's newest vessels compared to an older ship from Royal Caribbean, and of course the opposite is also true. Cabin sizes and layouts also vary widely across the vessels of both brands, and that's true even for basic interior, ocean view and balcony cabins.

That said, Royal Caribbean still comes out ahead in this category, since the line boasts more square footage in some of the most basic cabins as well as more over-the-top luxury accommodations, especially for families.

As an example, most inside cabins on Allure of the Seas feature 172 square feet of space, whereas Carnival Celebration's inside cabins are slightly smaller at 158 square feet. Meanwhile, the largest suites on Celebration are the Carnival Excel Presidential Suite, with 1,120 square feet of space including the balcony, and the Carnival Excel Aft Suite, which has 861 square feet of interior and balcony space. Compare those options to the Sky Loft Suites on Allure of the Seas, which feature 1,132 square feet across the room and balcony, and the spacious two-bedroom AquaTheater Suites with 1,595 square feet including the balcony.

Food options vary widely across vessels within any cruise brand, and this is especially true with Royal Caribbean and Carnival. For example, older ships from both cruise lines offer fewer specialty dining options overall along with the main dining rooms and buffet options cruisers come to expect, whereas newer ships from both lines feature a lot more unique and innovative options.

When you view the cruise dining options from both lines, you'll quickly find that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean pull out all the stops when it comes to food. For example, Carnival ships include a range of eateries from large and expansive buffets to main dining rooms to unique offerings like Big Chicken, Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina. Meanwhile, specialty dining on Carnival vessels features options like teppanyaki, Emeril's Bistros at Sea and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.

Royal Caribbean ships feature convenient buffets and main dining room experiences, as well as included options like pizza kitchens, noodle bars and casual fast food. Specialty dining on Royal Caribbean ranges from the brand's Chef's Table experience to Johnny Rockets' burgers and shakes to innovative fine dining at Wonderland.

Drink packages

A group of friends enjoying drinks at Lime and Coconut on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas.

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer drink packages that cruisers can purchase as part of their vacation to get a more all-inclusive feel . Then again, the value of these packages depends on how much you drink over the course of your trip. Also note that the cost of drink packages across all cruise lines can vary depending on the ship, itinerary, travel dates, length of trip and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out slightly ahead in this category because the line offers three tiers of drink packages for guests with different needs. Choose from the Classic Soda Package; the Refreshment Package, which includes soda along with coffees, juices and even milkshakes at Johnny Rockets; and the Deluxe Beverage Package, which adds in beer, cocktails and wine by the glass. Meanwhile, Carnival offers just two different drink packages: the Bottomless Bubbles package, which covers soft drinks and juice, and the Cheers! drink package, which adds in spirits and cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, specialty coffee, energy drinks and more.

Onboard activities

A waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Analyzing onboard activities across cruise lines isn't always easy – you really have to break down this category by ship for a true comparison. When you do that with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, you'll find that both lines offer fun activities for all ages, from onboard water parks to hosted games, casinos and more.

That said, Royal Caribbean does take things up a notch in this category, especially on the line's newer ships. Some Royal Caribbean vessels offer escape rooms, surf simulators, zip lines, game shows and over-the-top water parks with incredible slides for thrill-seekers. For example, Freedom of the Seas boasts huge onboard waterslides, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, mini-golf and more. Don't forget about Icon of the Seas with its massive water park and pool offerings in the works. Meanwhile, standout activities on Carnival ships include Family Feud Live, onboard water parks and the thrilling SkyRide.

Live entertainment

"Ice Spectacular" show on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas.

The quality of cruise ship entertainment varies widely based on the quality of the talent booked for individual ships. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer their share of live music and entertainment, including performances by bands and singers, karaoke, and piano bars. Meanwhile, both lines also boast their own theaters on every vessel, which often feature Broadway-style shows, singing and dancing, comedy acts, and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out ahead in this category since its vessels feature award-winning musicals like "Hairspray," "Mamma Mia!" and "Cats." The open-air AquaTheater on Oasis Class ships also wows guests with incredible diving feats, stunts and aerial acrobatics. Some Royal Caribbean ships even have onboard ice skating performances and ice games.

Kids programming

Winner: Carnival

Both cruise lines have kids clubs that cater to younger guests of all ages, with each one offering supervised care so parents can drop the kids off for some alone time or a quiet dinner on the ship. However, Carnival stands out slightly in this category due to the six different clubs offered across the fleet for children and teens between 6 months and 17 years old. Carnival also offers supervised Night Owls services for kids 11 and younger, which lets parents get out and have some late-night fun for an extra charge.

Royal Caribbean offers four kids clubs for children ages six months to 12, along with a separate club for tweens and teens . Supervised child care is available for free during the day, and you can opt for paid care after hours as well.

Adults-only offerings

A group of adults drinking and laughing at the Serenity Retreat on Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras.

Both cruise lines offer their share of adults-only spaces and things to do, from onboard casinos to luxurious spas to bars that offer cocktails and live entertainment at all hours of the day and night. Carnival and Royal Caribbean also offer adults-only areas on some of their ships.

On Carnival, for example, cruisers will find the Serenity Adults-Only Retreat for sailors 21 and older with extra space and comfortable chairs for relaxation, along with its own bar nearby. On many Royal Caribbean vessels, on the other hand, the onboard Solarium for ages 16-plus has its own pool and extra space to find peace and quiet.

Carnival's Serenity relaxation area is included for guests. While Royal Caribbean's Solarium is typically also included, on certain sailings there is restricted access by fare class.

Shore excursions

Shore excursions offered by cruise lines are largely operated by third-party companies and are often the same across brands. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean boast a broad selection of excursions in destinations around the world, from snorkeling and scuba tours in the Caribbean to city tours, horseback riding, cooking classes and more.

Both cruise lines offer private and custom tours you can book through your ship as well.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival each have their own private island in the Bahamas , which is included in most itineraries to this part of the world. Royal Caribbean's private island, called Perfect Day at CocoCay, is the more impressive option due to everything it includes: a heart-thumping water park, its own wave pool, a zip line, a hot air balloon experience and overwater bungalows you can book for the day, among other offerings. Meanwhile, Carnival's Half Moon Cay has a unique beached pirate ship to explore – but fewer amenities overall.

Note that both private islands have plenty of beach space for guests to spread out and relax, as well as restaurants and bars. You can also book excursions on both private islands, which include activities like snorkeling and water sports.

Comparing costs across cruise lines can be tricky since fares and available sales vary throughout the year, as well as based on the vessel booked, the cruise itinerary, the number and age of travelers, and more. To get an idea of who wins on price, we looked for two similar cruises on comparable ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, then priced out an option for a family of four with two children ages 8 and 10. For the purpose of this comparison, we used seven-night eastern Caribbean cruises on Carnival Celebration and Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, both of which began sailing in 2022.

The Carnival Celebration itinerary from Miami stops in Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands . By comparison, the Wonder of the Seas sailing leaves from Port Canaveral, Florida, with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten ; San Juan; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

The chart below shows the total cost (including taxes and fees) for a family of four in January 2024 in both an ocean view and a typical balcony cabin across both cruise lines. Note that, for the purpose of this comparison, we selected the least expensive room option in each category.

I don't gamble, but I used a casino status match to get a cheap cruise

Katie Genter

As I sat on my balcony looking at the Rock of Gibraltar in the distance, I couldn't believe I'd paid just $72 per night for me and my husband to take a 14-night transatlantic cruise.

Like many other passengers I talked to during the crossing, I'd booked my cheap cruise through a Carnival Players Club offer. My specific offer gave me a "free" balcony room, $50 of casino credit and complimentary drinks while playing in the casino.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

But unlike many passengers who booked Carnival Players Club offers, I hadn't gambled my way to a cruise. Instead, I'd used a chain of status matches to get casino status and sign up for a Carnival Fun Match. Then, I obsessively checked the Fun Match cruise offers until I found one I couldn't resist.

Read on to learn how I did it and how you can, too.

carnival cruise drink rules

How I got casino status without gambling

To get a Carnival Fun Match, I needed to submit proof of status in another casino's players club or loyalty program.

I have Caesars Rewards Diamond status, but I don't believe I've ever gambled at a Caesars casino — although I have earned reward credits on hotel stays, shopping and dining in Las Vegas. The truth is my activity with Caesars is far too limited to have earned Diamond status with the program. Instead, I have Caesars Diamond status via a match from Wyndham Rewards Diamond status .

You can earn Wyndham Diamond status through the end of the next calendar year if you stay with Wyndham for at least 40 qualifying nights in a calendar year. However, the Wyndham Rewards Earner® Business Card offers automatic Wyndham Diamond status for as long as you have the card.

I initially held Wyndham Diamond status through a series of status matches that are no longer available, but after using my Wyndham status for the Carnival Fun Match, my status expired. Now, I hold Diamond status as a Wyndham Business cardholder.

The information for the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Caesars now requires you to "have earned Tier Status with your current loyalty program in order for your status to be matched." But Diamond status from holding the Wyndham Business card counts as an earned status to match to Caesars Rewards.

To summarize, I got Wyndham Diamond status via a no-longer-available status match — but you can still get it by holding the Wyndham Business card. Then, I matched this status to Caesars Rewards online. In previous years, it has taken a few weeks for my match to go through, but this year, it took about a month.

Leveraging status matches

With Caesars Diamond status in hand, it was time to request a Carnival Fun Match in the hopes of scoring a free or cheap cruise.

You can register for the Carnival Players Club Fun Match program if you are 21 or older and a legal resident of one of the 50 U.S. states or Washington, D.C. Once you do so, you won't get elite status, but you might get discounted cruise offers. Even if you already are a member of Carnival Cruise Line's VIFP Club loyalty program , you can still register for a Fun Match.

To register, you'll need to input your VIFP Club number and email; if you don't have a VIFP account, you can create one. Either way, check the box for "I would like to receive emails for special offers and/or information from Carnival" to get offers in your inbox.

carnival cruise drink rules

I submitted proof of my Caesars Rewards Diamond status by taking photos of both sides of my physical Caesars Diamond card I'd picked up in Las Vegas. If I had more casino statuses, I could have uploaded more than just one and might have gotten better offers. You'll likely get better offers if you go that route and submit proof of status with other casino loyalty programs.

Carnival Fun Match offers

Once you register for a Carnival Players Club Fun Match, you might see offers via email within a week. However, some travelers have reported registering for Fun Match and only receiving discounted cruise offers. You might go through all the effort of status matching and still not get any offers for a "free" cruise.

When I wrote this story, the Carnival Fun Match website said travelers who register will get "drinks included + upgrades + $50 to spend in the casino." You should get at least whichever offer is currently on the Fun Match registration page.

Otherwise, there are no rules or official guidance regarding the types of Fun Match offers you might receive or how long you might receive offers. Each offer you let expire could be the last offer you see. Once you book a Fun Match offer, the flow of offers into your email inbox will likely end ... at least, until you've gone on your cruise and Carnival has assessed your level of play in its onboard casino.

I started getting Fun Match emails in my inbox within a week of registering in January 2022. Until I booked a Fun Match offer in March 2023, I got one to four emails with Fun Match offers per week.

Some Fun Match offers were for cruises starting at $55 per person, per day (plus taxes, fees and gratuities), based on double occupancy. With these offers, I could have gotten complimentary drinks in the casino and bonus cash from Carnival based on how many points I accrued in the casino during my cruise. For reference, you'll earn 1 point for every $2.50 you wager through slot machines.

carnival cruise drink rules

Other offers included a "free" cruise with complimentary drinks in the casino and a $50 FunPlay credit. Some offers even included balcony rooms, although these were more limited than ocean-view rooms, which in turn were more limited than windowless inside rooms.

A "free" cruise, mind you, isn't really free. You'll still need to pay a deposit (which you'll get back in onboard credits), plus taxes, fees and gratuities.

carnival cruise drink rules

After a while, I forgot about the Fun Match offers, as they got hidden in the Promotions tab of my inbox. But once I rediscovered them in late 2022, I checked my cruise offers daily.

You might find hundreds of offers when you click through to see the eligible cruises for a specific offer. Most are usually for cruises to the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Mexico in inside cabins. You can filter by cruise destination, departure port, length of cruise and sail date.

carnival cruise drink rules

You can select an ocean-view room, balcony or suite if they're available for the sailing, but you will often need to pay more to upgrade to these room types.

carnival cruise drink rules

Carnival is not in the business of giving away free cruises if it believes it could sell them for more. The best Fun Match deals will likely be on shoulder-season sailings, last-minute cruises and other itineraries that are unlikely to sell out. Don't expect to find a "free" offer on a popular Christmas cruise or a summer cruise on the line's newest ship.

With this understanding, my husband and I decided that if we were going to accept a Fun Match offer, we wanted a "free" balcony cabin on a transatlantic , transpacific or Panama Canal full transit cruise . We had high hopes and were willing to risk not booking an offer for the chance to book one of these extended cruises with a balcony.

After a few months of daily checks, we saw a Fun Match "free" cruise offer for an April 2024 transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to Port Canaveral (near Orlando) in a balcony cabin. This offer perfectly fit our criteria — a balcony cabin on a transatlantic cruise — so we booked it with a $200 deposit before it disappeared. After all, months of searching had taught me that offers can go away quickly.

carnival cruise drink rules

As you can see, our "free" cruise wasn't free. But even after the $391 in taxes and fees and $406 in prepaid gratuities, we got a great deal on our transatlantic voyage. It cost just $36 per person, per night — and that included meals in the ship's multiple complimentary restaurants, onboard entertainment and transportation across the Atlantic.

Plus, about six months before our cruise, a Chase Offer appeared for Carnival that let us get some cash back while paying for the remainder of our cruise cost.

Related: I earned a 'free' cruise in a ship casino — here's what it cost, plus tips for getting comped

carnival cruise drink rules

Was it worth it?

The Carnival Fun Match was worth it for me. I enjoyed our extended cruise on Carnival Glory and would certainly book another casino offer. It takes patience and stubbornness to wait for the perfect offer that might never come, but I was happy we waited to use my Fun Match offer for a balcony cabin on a 14-night transatlantic cruise.

Once on board, I felt no pressure to gamble despite cruising on a casino offer. You could theoretically never visit the cruise ship casino while sailing on a Fun Match cruise. But since my husband and I had complimentary drinks when playing in the casino as part of our Fun Match offer, we did spend some time at Carnival Glory's Camel Club Casino. I stuck to 1-cent slots, ended up about even and enjoyed a few hard seltzers most evenings.

My limited casino play was enough. I've now started getting new "free" inside cabin cruise offers from Carnival Players Club and am considering booking another cruise if I find the right offer. Panama Canal, here we come!

Brussels has accused Microsoft of anti-competitive behaviour by bundling its Teams app with its Office suite, in the first such antitrust charges brought against the tech giant in more than a decade.

The EU on Tuesday handed the world’s most valuable public company a charge sheet outlining concerns that it gave its video conferencing app Teams an “undue advantage”, harming rivals such as Slack and Zoom.

The charges are the biggest that Brussels has filed against Microsoft, apart from merger control, since the group’s showdown with the US and EU over Windows, which began more than 20 years ago. That landmark case also centred on Microsoft’s bundling, or “tying”, of its various software products.

FedEx shares surge on rosy outlook and $2.5bn share buyback plan

FedEx shares surged in extended trading as it issued a rosy outlook and announced plans for $2.5bn in share buybacks for the current fiscal year.

The delivery company, considered a bellwether of global economic growth, said it expects low-to-mid single-digit revenue growth in the current fiscal year and earnings per diluted share to be between $18.25 to $20.25 a share. Analysts had forecast revenue growth of about 3 per cent and earnings of $20.15 a share.

FedEx, which has made efforts in recent quarters to cut costs in what chief executive Raj Subramaniam has described as a “challenging revenue environment”, reported net income of $1.47bn in its fourth quarter on revenue of $22.1bn. Although the latter was in line with analysts’ forecasts, net income was almost 17 per cent higher than what Wall Street expected.

The group also announced $2.5bn of stock repurchases for fiscal 2025.

US stocks snap three-day losing streak thanks to Big Tech rebound

US stocks snapped a three-day losing streak on Tuesday thanks to a rebound in Big Tech stocks.

The S&P 500 rose 0.4 per cent, led higher by a near-7 per cent increase for chip designer Nvidia. The tech-dominated Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.3 per cent.

Nvidia had shed more than $500bn in market value since briefly becoming the world’s most valuable public company last week, but bounced back on Tuesday with its strongest one-day gain in about a month.

Tuesday’s moves were the latest illustration of how a small number of megacap companies have been driving the recent market rally, with the index climbing despite declines for more than three-quarters of individual companies.

Shares of pool makers plunge on industry leader’s profit warning

Shares of swimming pool groups were among the worst performers on Wall Street after one of the sector’s top players slashed its full-year outlook on subdued consumer spending on big-ticket items.

Louisiana-based Pool late on Monday said that owing to “persistently weak demand” for new pool construction — and with “peak selling season” almost complete — it believes pool construction activity could be down 15 per cent to 20 per cent for the year.

The company said its year-to-date sales are down about 6.5 per cent from a year ago, with its discretionary business lines hit hardest. Pool cut its annual earnings guidance range to $11.04 to $11.44 per diluted share from $13.19 to $14.19 previously.

Pool shares closed 8 per cent lower on Tuesday, making them the worst performer in the S&P 500, and giving the company a valuation of about $12bn. Smaller pool maker Latham Group sank 12.7 per cent, while pool supplies groups Hayward Holdings and Leslie’s dropped 9.1 per cent and 4.8 per cent, respectively.

Kenya’s president condemns anti-tax protests as an attack on democracy

Kenya’s President William Ruto on Tuesday said his country “experienced an unprecedented attack on its democracy, rule of law, and the integrity of its constitutional institutions” after nationwide anti-tax protests left at least five people dead and more than 30 injured.

The country’s army was deployed on Tuesday evening to support police after parts of the parliament building in Nairobi were set on fire.

Ruto said an “otherwise legitimate expression of the fundamental rights and freedoms of assembly” was “infiltrated and hijacked by a group of organised criminals”.

“Today’s events mark a critical turning point on how we respond to grave threats to our national security,” Ruto said, adding he will ensure that a “situation of this nature” does not happen again.

US goal for domestic solar supply chain boosted by Oklahoma plant deal

Norwegian solar manufacturer NorSun announced a $620mn investment to build a factory in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a signal of confidence to US ambitions to develop a local supply chain and cut reliance on Chinese production.

The 5GW factory, when operational, will be among the first to produce ingots and wafers for solar panels in the US, which has no operating capacity for these components.

The announcement on Tuesday from NorSun comes as US solar manufacturers struggle to compete with low market prices amid an overproduction of panels from China. Earlier this year, Bill Gates-backed CubicPV scrapped plans to build a 10GW wafer factory in the US, citing a “dramatic collapse” in prices.

US stocks advance as Nvidia leads bounce in Big Tech peers

US stocks climbed, lifted by a rebound in shares of Nvidia and its tech sector rivals.

The S&P 500 was up 0.3 per cent in mid-afternoon trading on Tuesday, while the tech-dominated Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.2 per cent. The so-called “Magnificent Seven” megacap tech companies — Nvidia, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Apple and Tesla — all climbed, and accounted for seven of the eight biggest index point drivers of the S&P 500’s advance.

Nvidia led the charge with a 5.8 per cent increase, bouncing after three consecutive days of declines.

Government bond prices were mostly steady despite the combination of a large Treasury auction, new economic data and updates from a senior Federal Reserve official on the inflation outlook.

The yield on the two-year note, which is particularly sensitive to interest rate expectations, inched up 0.01 percentage points to 4.74 per cent, while the benchmark 10-year yield added around the same amount, to 4.24 per cent. Higher yields reflect lower prices.

Shares of cruise operators leap after Carnival issues upbeat outlook

Shares in cruise line operators were among the best performers on Wall Street after one of the industry’s top players boosted its full-year outlook on continued strength in demand.

Carnival forecast adjusted net income of $1.55bn in fiscal 2024, a $275mn increase from three months ago, and above the $1.37bn analysts pencilled in.

Chief executive Josh Weinstein said the company is experiencing “strong bookings momentum driven by record booking volumes for 2025 sailings”, and was also able to achieve “considerably higher prices” on bookings taken in its most recent quarter compared to the prior year.

Shares in Carnival were up 9.3 per cent in lunchtime trading on Tuesday, on course for their biggest daily jump in a year.

Carnival was the best performer in the S&P 500, followed by rival Norwegian Cruise Line with a 6 per cent gain. Royal Caribbean Cruises, up 3.6 per cent, was the fourth-best performer in the index.

The Philippine ambassador to Washington has warned that a conflict with China over a contested reef in the South China Sea could engulf countries across the Indo-Pacific, raising the spectre of a possible nuclear war.

Jose Manuel Romualdez said the dispute with China over the Second Thomas Shoal had created an incendiary situation. In recent months, the Chinese coast guard has violently blocked Philippine boats from carrying out supply missions to marines stationed on the Sierra Madre , a marooned ship on the reef.

“It’s the most dangerous time . . . weapons of mass destruction are very real,” Romualdez told the Financial Times in an interview. “You have several countries, major powers that have large arsenals of nuclear power.”

“If anything happens, the entire Asian region will be completely included,” he added.

Top Fed official expects inflation to continue to slow this year

A top Federal Reserve official has said she expects inflation to continue to edge lower this year before slowing more sharply in 2025, as US consumers reduce spending and housing costs ease.

Lisa Cook, a Fed governor and a voter on the Federal Open Market Committee, said her forecasts for inflation meant that “at some point” it would be necessary to cut rates.

Her expectation is for three- and six-month inflation rates “to continue to move lower on a bumpy path” for the rest of 2024 as consumers grow more resistant to higher prices.

Next year, Cook forecasts inflation will slow “more sharply” as rents on new leases have less of an impact on price pressures. She also expects goods prices to continue to fall and services inflation to ebb.

Blackstone makes ‘final’ offer for Hipgnosis in move to avoid hedge fund battle

Blackstone has made a “best and final” offer for Hipgnosis Songs Fund as it seeks to forestall any attempt to agitate for a higher price by hedge funds that have built a large stake in the UK-listed music rights owner.

A group of US and UK hedge funds have acquired a potential blocking stake in Hipgnosis Songs Fund ahead of a crucial shareholder vote on the $1.6bn takeover of the UK-listed music rights owner by Blackstone.

However, the US private equity fund has instead made a best and final offer. While not raising the price, it will mean that Blackstone will not be able to increase its offer or make a new offer for six months. In effect, this will send a message to the hedge funds that any attempt to block the takeover could simply collapse the deal.

US consumer confidence dips as traders seek signs of economic softness

US consumer confidence eased in June, according to the Conference Board, suggesting a somewhat mixed view on the American economy.

The business and research organisation’s consumer confidence index dipped to 100.4 from a downwardly revised 101.3 in May . That was marginally stronger than the reading of 100 economists had forecast.

“Consumers expressed mixed feelings this month: their view of the present situation improved slightly overall, driven by an uptick in sentiment about the current labour market, but their assessment of current business conditions cooled,” said Dana Peterson, chief economist of the Conference Board.

The report comes almost a fortnight after the University of Michigan’s preliminary reading of its consumer sentiment index unexpectedly hit a seven-month low in June , and as investors peruse economic data for signs of softening that could encourage the Federal Reserve to push ahead with interest rate cuts this year.

Markets update: Nvidia shares rebound after sell-off

Shares in Nvidia rose in early trade on Tuesday, rebounding from a sharp sell-off in the previous session.

The chipmaker, which lost 6.7 per cent on Monday, gained 2.4 per cent shortly after the opening bell in New York. Several killed in Kenya as anti-tax protests intensify

Several people were reportedly killed and scores injured by gunfire during nationwide anti-tax protests in Kenya on Tuesday, as protesters stormed parliamentary grounds.

Local broadcaster KTN reported that at least eight people had been killed, citing paramedic services. The Kenya Human Rights Commission said the police had fired live rounds at demonstrators, while eyewitnesses said parts of Kenya’s parliament had been set on fire.

Earlier on Tuesday, lawmakers passed a controversial finance bill that will aid the government’s plans to raise more than $2bn in new taxes, and which now awaits the assent of President William Ruto.

“Ruto is using the finance bill to impose heavy taxation on Kenyans,” said 25-year-old Davis Tafari, one of the youngsters leading the protests, calling the tax bill “punitive and draconian”.

Canadian inflation rises unexpectedly, three weeks after pioneering rate cut

Inflation in Canada has risen unexpectedly, just three weeks after its central bank became the first in the G7 group of advanced economies to cut interest rates in the current cycle.

Statistics Canada said the country’s consumer price index rose 2.9 per cent in May, up from 2.7 per cent in April. Economists polled by Reuters had expected inflation to slow to 2.6 per cent.

The Bank of Canada cut its policy interest rate to 4.75 per cent on June 5, having held it at 5 per cent since June 2023. Announcing the move, governor Tiff Macklem said the bank’s governing council had decided that “monetary policy no longer needs to be as restrictive”.

European defence stocks sink after Airbus cuts profit forecasts

An index tracking European defence stocks fell more than 5 per cent and was on course for its worst session in more than two years on Tuesday, as shares in Airbus tumbled after the plane maker cut its profit forecasts.

The Stoxx Europe Aerospace & Defence index lost 5.5 per cent in early afternoon trade in what was set to be its biggest daily decline since falling 8.9 per cent in November 2021. The index remains up 19.2 per cent since the start of the year.

Airbus led the sell-off, losing 12.4 per cent after warning of supply chain disruptions and lowering its annual profit forecasts.

Ireland puts forward finance minister for senior EU post

Ireland on Tuesday nominated Michael McGrath for an EU commissioner post, hoping that by submitting its bid early, the outgoing finance minister will clinch a senior economic portfolio.

The cabinet formally approved the choice of McGrath, who has been preparing the Irish government coalition’s final budget before elections that are widely expected this autumn. Ireland’s outgoing commissioner is Mairead McGuinness, the EU’s financial services chief.

McGrath, 47, has been finance minister since December 2022 and is well known in EU circles from meetings of Eurogroup. An unflappable, detail-orientated accountant who served as minister for public expenditure from 2020-22, he has a reputation for fiscal prudence and tough negotiating. He was replaced as finance minister by Jack Chambers, deputy leader of the Fianna Fáil party.

A top Federal Reserve official has backed more interest rate rises if inflation sticks at its current level, saying immigration and aggressive fiscal stimulus are likely to keep US prices rising more quickly than in other rich economies.

Michelle Bowman, one of the Fed’s governors and a voter on its rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee, said she remained “willing to raise” borrowing costs again “should progress on inflation stall or even reverse”.

Bowman’s remarks came in a speech on Tuesday in London, and point to the debate within the Fed about whether the bank can begin cutting interest rates this year, or at all before November’s presidential election.

Moscow blocks online access to 81 European news outlets in retaliatory move

Russia has blocked online access to several dozen major European news outlets, in what the Russian foreign ministry said was a response to EU measures introduced last month against three Russian state media outlets.

The foreign ministry published a list of 81 European news outlets whose websites would no longer be freely accessible from inside Russia, including Politico, Germany’s Der Spiegel, Spain’s El País, The Irish Times, Italy’s La Repubblica, and France’s Le Monde.

The EU Council last month  suspended  the broadcasting activities of four Russian state media outlets, saying they “spread and support the Russian propaganda and war of aggression against Ukraine”. The Russian foreign ministry on Tuesday cited three: the Ria state news agency, and the Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspapers.

International Criminal Court issues arrest warrants for Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov

carnival cruise drink rules

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants on war crimes charges against Russian security council secretary Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, the top commander of Russia’s invasion force in Ukraine.

The court said on Tuesday there were reasonable grounds to believe Shoigu, Russia’s former defence minister, and Gerasimov “bear individual criminal responsibility” for a campaign of missile strikes against Ukrainian electric power plants and substations from October 2022 to March 2023.

The arrest warrants are the third set handed out by the ICC since president Vladimir Putin – who is himself under an ICC indictment on charges relating to the alleged abduction of Ukrainian children – ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Former Fujitsu engineer insists Post Office Horizon software was robust

A former Fujitsu engineer has maintained that the system at the centre of the Post Office Horizon scandal was robust, despite the High Court finding it was responsible for faulty data used in prosecutions.  Gareth Jenkins told a public inquiry into the affair that while he accepted there were “discrete bugs” in the system that could result in account discrepancies, they were well controlled and managed. “They could cause discrepancies in branch accounts but not at the sort of levels that have been talked about,” he said. “In general the systems I believe were operating as they should.” More than 900 sub-postmasters were convicted in cases involving faulty data from Horizon following its introduction in 1999.

S&P 500 resilient in the face of Nvidia decline

Historically low levels of correlation between stocks listed on the S&P 500 have so far prevented index heavyweight Nvidia’s recent declines from provoking a broader market sell-off, according to Bank of America analysts.

The chipmaker — “arguably the overwhelming driver of growth in a historically narrow market,” said BofA in a note to clients on Tuesday — has lost about 16 per cent since last Thursday. The S&P 500 has proved resilient, however, thanks in part to stock-to-stock correlation having dropped to its lowest level in almost 20 years.

“Despite some steep declines in the megacaps, the S&P 500’s worst day last week remained limited to a [0.25 per cent] sell-off, with its streak of consecutive days without a 2 per cent decline now reaching 380,” BofA said.

Tories withdraw support from candidates accused of election betting

Rishi Sunak has dramatically withdrawn Conservative support for two Tory candidates linked to allegations of betting on the election date.

After standing by Craig Williams and Laura Saunders for several days, Sunak pulled the plug on the candidates on Tuesday morning, amid growing pressure from Labour and some senior Tories to do so.

The Conservative party issued a statement that said: “As a result of ongoing internal enquiries, we have concluded that we can no longer support Craig Williams or Laura Saunders as parliamentary candidates at the forthcoming general election.

“We have checked with the Gambling Commission that this decision does not compromise the investigation that they are conducting, which is rightly independent and ongoing.”

Stellantis could cease UK production, citing government’s EV quotas

carnival cruise drink rules

Stellantis could stop building cars in the UK unless the British government does more to stimulate demand or change current electrification policy, its UK boss has warned.

“Stellantis UK does not stop. Stellantis production in the UK could stop,” the group’s UK managing director Maria Grazia Davino said at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ annual summit in London on Tuesday.

Davino said the UK’s quota regime, which requires manufacturers to meet electric vehicle sales targets, which rise annually, had put “return under stress”.

“It is the lack of demand versus the regulation and its punishment if you don’t make it,” she said.

A decision on the future of the company’s UK production would likely come in less than a year, Davino added.

Israel’s supreme court has unanimously ruled that there is no basis for exempting ultraorthodox religious students from the country’s compulsory military service, and that those who meet the criteria must be called up.

In a closely watched ruling on one of the most divisive issues in Israeli politics, the court also ruled that religious schools whose students do not do military service would no longer be entitled to receive state subsidies.

The exemption is widely seen as an issue with the potential to split Benjamin Netanyahu’s five party coalition, which contains two ultraorthodox parties determined to preserve the arrangement, and others, including defence minister Yoav Gallant, who are intent on abolishing it.

Airbus shares fall 10% after profit warning

Shares in Airbus tumbled 10 per cent on Tuesday after the plane maker cut its annual profit forecast because of persistent supply chain disruptions and challenges in its space business.

After the French stock market closed on Monday, Airbus said it would deliver “around 770” aircraft this year, down from a previous target of “around 800”. The group blamed a “degraded operating environment”.

The company also pushed back its target to produce 75 of its best-selling A320 family of jets from 2026 to 2027.

As a result, the aerospace and defence group now expects adjusted earnings before interest and tax of €5.5bn this year, down from a previous forecast of as much as €7bn.

Nasdaq notches biggest drop in 2 months as tech tumble offsets broader gains

Line chart of Share price, $ showing Nvidia shares tumble after record-breaking rally

The Nasdaq Composite notched its biggest one-day drop in almost two months, as Nvidia led a sell-off among several Big Tech names and countered gains for the broader US stock market.

The tech-heavy index closed 1.1 per cent lower on Monday, its biggest one-day drop since April 30. Shares in Nvidia dropped 6.7 per cent, continuing a recent slide, for their biggest daily fall since mid-April.

Owing to its heavy weighting, Nvidia’s share price moves have a large influence over the direction of stock market indices.

The S&P 500 closed 0.3 per cent lower on Monday, even as about 70 per cent of the benchmark index’s constituents ended the session higher.
