Carnival Cruise Drink Policies

Carnival Cruise Drink Policies

Carnival Cruise Line has specific drink policies in place to ensure that all guests have a safe and enjoyable experience on board. These policies are also designed to comply with the laws and regulations of the various ports of call where the cruise ships dock. Understanding these rules can help you avoid any surprises and potential consequences.

What You Can Bring Onboard

One of the most common questions for cruise-goers is about bringing their own beverages on board. Carnival Cruise permits passengers to bring a restricted quantity of non-alcoholic drinks and wine or champagne aboard. Specifically, guests can carry up to 12 sealed cans or cartons (each 12 ounces) of non-alcoholic drinks like sodas, juices, and milk. Additionally, each adult (21 or older) is allowed one wine or champagne bottle, no larger than 750 ml.

It’s essential to note that these drinks must be carried in your carry-on luggage during embarkation. If any drinks are found in your checked luggage, they can possibly be confiscated.

Consequences of Breaking the Rules

If you are found in violation of Carnival’s drink policies, there can be consequences. For example, if you bring alcohol onboard beyond the allowed one bottle of wine or champagne, it will be confiscated and stored until the end of the cruise. In cases of excessive violations or if underage drinking is involved, you may face more severe consequences, such as being removed from the ship , facing fines , or even being banned from future cruises .

Tips for Complying with Drink Policies

Complying with Carnival’s drink policies is quite straightforward. Here are some tips to avoid any issues:

💡 Read and understand the policies : Make sure you are familiar with the drink policies before you board the ship.

💡 Limit your carry-ons : Stick to the allowed quantities and types of drinks in your carry-on luggage.

💡 Avoid sneaking alcohol : Attempts to sneak alcohol on board in water bottles or other containers are often detected by security.

💡 Respect the legal drinking age : The minimum drinking age is 21 on a Cruise ship. Make sure to carry a valid ID if you plan to consume alcohol.

💡 Drink responsibly : While enjoying your time at sea, remember to drink responsibly and consider your fellow passengers.

Complying with Carnival's drink policies

Following these tips will help you stay within the rules and enjoy your cruise to the fullest. After all, cruising Carnival is all about having a good time without any worries.

Are Drinks Included in the Cruise Fare?

When you book a cruise with Carnival Cruise Line , you’ll find that some beverages are included in your cruise fare, while others are not. Understanding what’s included can help you manage your budget more effectively during your voyage.

Included in your cruise fare are basic beverages like tap water, tea, coffee, and some juices that are available in the main dining room and buffet area. These drinks are free and unlimited. On the other hand, alcoholic beverages , soda, bottled water, specialty coffees, and other premium drinks are not included in the cruise fare. You will need to pay extra for these, either à la carte or through one of Carnival’s drink packages.

Can You Share a Drink Package?

Sharing drink packages on Carnival ships is not allowed . When you purchase a package, it is tied specifically to your boarding card, and you can’t transfer or share it with other guests. Each guest must purchase their own drink package.

Attempting to share your drink package with others could result in penalties or even revocation of your drink package without a refund. It’s important to follow the rules and only use your drink package for your own consumption.

First and foremost, it is important to note that Carnival Cruise has specific regulations regarding the quantities and types of beverages that are allowed to be brought on board. These packages allow passengers to enjoy unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages throughout their cruise for a fixed daily rate. By purchasing one of these packages, travelers can indulge in a variety of libations without worrying about exceeding their carry-on limits.

26 Cocktails and Tips for Your Next Cruise

By Beers & Beans

If there’s one down side to traveling as a couple, it’s that we don’t have to go out of our way to meet people if we don’t want to. On trips, it’s all too easy to become insulated in our own traveling bubble, sharing the experience with one another while the world swirls around us. To ensure that this didn’t happen on our Carnival Caribbean cruise , we decided to create a fun assignment for ourselves, in which we would buy cocktails for 26 different people—each drink, though, would have to start with a different letter of the alphabet. Plus, we thought we could grab a tip or “best cruise moment” from each person to create a unique cruising guide.

The laughs started flowing right from the start and kept going until the very last cocktail, even as we struggled to fill in the final few letters—Q…X…Y…Z—on our final sea day. During the seven day cruise, we got to spend time at every bar on the ship for our A to Z drink assignment.  And while we enjoyed each, our personal favorites were the poolside bars on the Lido deck. RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar both had a tiki bar feel, and the bartenders really knew their stuff when it came to mixing up island-style cocktails. So, without further ado, here’s our cruise guide—Beers and Beans style!

These packages can offer convenience and may be a better option for enjoying a wide variety of drinks throughout your cruise.

Your options typically included classics like daiquiris, pina coladas, and, if the menu dared to be bold, perhaps a mojito. Today, the drink landscape has undergone a significant transformation. Cruise ship bars now boast a diverse array of choices, featuring craft beers, premium spirits, and meticulously concocted cocktails. It’s an entirely new experience.

Carnival Cruise Line, in particular, has taken this evolution to heart, revolutionizing its drink offerings with a tailored menu for almost every bar on their ships. This accomplishment is noteworthy, especially when considering that a single ship can host between 10 and 15 bars.

Carnival will be increasing drink menu prices in the first part of 2024. The new menus are already in place on the Carnival Jubilee and we expect other ships to follow in January and February.

See a new menu on your ship? Email it to us so we can share with everyone, [email protected]

Below you’ll find the bar menus found on the Carnival Cruise Line’s ships. Carnival has a pretty robust beverage program and usually has different drinks available at nearly every bar on a ship, so you’ll see a ton of drink options below. For drinks offered at multiple venues, the prices are consistent (i.e., a Coors Light and the Atrium Bar will cost the same as a Coors Light at the Pool Bar). When looking at the prices, remember to consider gratuities. Carnival automatically adds an 18% gratuity added to all beverage purchases.

Bonsai Sushi Cocktail Menu

Bonsai Sushi is the place to go if you’re looking for fresh sushi on a Carnival cruise. While you’re there, have one of these specialty cocktails. Unfortunately, cocktails are unavailable on Ecstasy, Elation, Freedom, and Miracle as they have a Bonsai Sushi Express, not a dedicated restaurant.

Menu is from the Carnival Radiance January 2024.

This bar may be confusing because Carnival uses odd naming for their venues. While many ships have “Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ,” few have the actual Smokehouse and Brewhouse, which has cocktails. The Smokehouse/Brewhouse is a sit-down restaurant with a large bar serving some great cocktails. They even have a brewery right inside this bar where they make their own beer! You can find it on the  Carnival Celebration ,  Carnival Horizon , Carnival Jubilee ,  Carnival Mardi Gras , and  Carnival Panorama .

If you’re a beer fan, I highly recommend the Brewery Tour for $30 a person. You can read more about the Carnival Pig & Anchor Brewery Tour here .

A liquor and beverage consumption policy was created in order for Carnival to be able to control the liquor consumption of minors and the quantities consumed that lead to the disruptive behavior of others on board.

Bringing Alcohol On Board - Embarkation Day

What items am I not allowed to bring?

Prohibited Items:

  • Alcohol (hard liquor) and beer
  • Wine or champagne beyond the allowable limit of one 750 ml bottle per adult (18 years of age or older)
  • Non-alcoholic beverages in containers other than a can or carton; excessive quantities per person (over 12 cans/cartons per person); exessive size per can/carton (over 375 ml each)

Carnival's Liquor and Beverage policy states that the guests are prohibited from bringing water, sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages on board that are packed in bottles. What is Carnival's liquor and beverage policy?

Guests are prohibited from bringing water, sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages that are packaged in glass or plastic bottles.

On embarkation day, a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, energy drinks, juice, and milk), packaged in cans or cartons, may be brought on board and must be in the guest's carry-on luggage. A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 375-ml each or less, per person.

Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board with the following exception - at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, guests (18 years of age and older) may bring one 750-ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne, per person, in their carry-on luggage. Outside this exception, all liquor, beer, other forms of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage and such items will be confiscated and discarded and no compensation will be provided . Guests sailing with us on back-to-back cruises are entitled to bring the same quantity as stated in this policy, per cruise. The additional quantities will be stored for safekeeping at the start of the first cruise and will be given to the guest as each following cruise begins.

Corkage Fee:

Should guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in the main dining room, specialty restaurant or bar, a $15.00 AUD corkage fee, per 750-ml bottle, will be charged. A corkage fee is a charge that is assessed, at time of service, for every bottle that is served and not bought on the premises.

Large cooler restrictions : Carnival Cruise Line does not allow guests to bring large coolers on board its ships. However small, personal-sized coolers, no larger than 30x30x30cm for the purpose of housing small quantities of non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications are permitted as carry-on luggage. Screening and movement of large coolers through embarkation is an impediment to the boarding and security screening process. Therefore, large coolers are not permitted as carry-on or checked luggage.

Ports-of-Call : Alcoholic beverages of any kind purchased in any Port-of-Call will be retained at the gangway, stored on board and held by Carnival until the end of the voyage.

Drinking Alcohol On Board : The minimum age for the purchase and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages in the bars, lounges and gift shops is 18 years of age. In the event that Bar/Restaurant/Gift Shop staff are in question that a guest is less than 18 years old, they shall request picture identification, prior to serving the drink or selling the bottle of liquor. Carnival reserves the right to refuse the sale of alcoholic beverages to anyone.

Carnival brings back adult activity Royal Caribbean also offers

E ven a family-friendly cruise line has adults-only events: Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival offer age-18-plus comedy shows and other events where younger passengers are not allowed.

Cruise ships, at least those from Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) and Carnival, are generally all ages. You can bring your kids into most bars with no restrictions. They can't drink alcohol on sailings out of the U.S. since the drinking age on board is 21, but in most cases they can be in bars and even sit at the bar.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line fixes a passenger payment problem

Both cruise lines do offer after-hours dance clubs with age restrictions, and kids under age 18 have a 1 a.m. curfew if they are not with an adult. Still, most activities on Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) ships are all-ages, and even the adult activities, aside from the comedy shows, aren't all that adult.

There is, however, one notable exception, "The Quest," a risque adult scavenger hunt both cruise lines offered before the Covid pandemic. "The Quest" was slow to return, first due to social distancing and, for a while, because ships were not sailing full.

Royal Caribbean has been offering "The Quest" on most sailings while Carnival passengers have questioned why they weren't seeing the popular late-night event on their sailings. Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald explained why the cruise line has brought back "The Quest" but you may not find it on your cruise.

Carnival Cruise Line offers 'The Quest'

Heald held his weekly "Coffee with John" livestream on May 9 and he addressed "The Quest."

"Another thing that was a big talking point yesterday was a game show called 'The Quest.' For those of you who don't know what this is, this is a late-night show usually 11 p.m. at night or afterward and it's sort of an adult scavenger hunt. Now, there is a saying that what happens at 'The Quest' stays at 'The Quest' and there were lots of people asking me 'Why have we canceled it?'" he posted.

"So, again, I want to address this. 'The Quest' is still an option and is still being performed on, the event is still being hosted on some of the ships, most of them in fact," he added.

Most, however, is not the same as all and the brand ambassador explained the scenario where interactive show would not be offered.

"We do give the cruise directors the opportunity not to host it. And the reason not to host it as 'A, they don't feel comfortable doing so' and speaking to some of them, they have decided not to host it based on the number of large, well I shouldn't say large, based on the negative comments from people who were in attendance and complained about the event," he said.

Heald did offer a warning about the show.

"Now, it is very adult-orientated. I'm not going to say any more than that. You will most likely see it on your ship, but if you do not it is not because we've canceled it, but it is because the cruise director has decided that he or she does not feel comfortable in performing and hosting that," he added.

"Instead they will have other late-night activities options and they include late-night comedy which we move to the big theater or the 'Family Feud Live: After Hours Edition' which is also a little spicy," Heald said.

Carnival wants you to keep your clothes on

While "The Quest" has returned, Carnival will not be bringing back another adult option it once offered.

"I received a follow-up from “M” who asked “ why the Serenity Deck cannot be made a clothing-optional area?” he said. "So let me say straight away that like smoking, we cannot and will not be allowing this. However, maybe some context may help them with that answer."

Topless decks, he shared, did once exist.

"Where once we had topless decks in the 90s on ships like the Holiday, Celebration, and Jubilee, today nudity is now a massive no-no, unless it’s a specific full ship charter," he posted.

That's not just a Carnival change, it's also a cultural one that extends beyond the U.S.

Want the latest cruise news and deals? Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter.

"And it’s not just the ships that are this way. If you go to the beaches of Saint Tropez, Sardinia, and Cleveland, Ohio this summer, you’ll see very few topless female sun worshippers. Yes, there are still beaches where you can lie on the sand in the nude, but these are mainly for people who are comfortable in their own skin," he added.

Customers might book a variety of vacation experiences at resorts and on cruise liners expecting to be able to rely on amenities provided, from snacks and toiletries to other daily necessities they might need while far from home.

However, those provided necessities may not be entirely trustworthy due to the actions of previous guests, says one lawyer who specializes in cases related to stays on cruise ships.

In a video posted to TikTok by lawyer Spencer Aronfeld (@cruiseshiplawyer on TikTok), the legal expert addresses a video circulating online of a woman who is showing a “hack” to avoid being charged for water bottles while staying in a cabin on what he alleges is a Carnival cruise ship.

In this “hack,” which the legal expert condemns as “horrendous, dangerous” and “despicable,” the woman shows herself refilling emptied water bottles with tap water and sealing them with some kind of glue.

In response, the legal expert advises viewers to avoid the water bottles provided on a cruise ship and calls for her to be banned from the cruise line.

“Let’s file this one under ‘ban her for life,'” he says in the video. “…And now leaves them for the next passenger who’s going to open those bottles, drink out of probably a used bottle and put their mouth where Krazy glue was. This is not only horrendous and dangerous, it’s despicable.”

While it is possible that the video is a poorly thought-out prank, the poster encourages Carnival to find the woman and ban her from its line of cruise ships for the behavior in the video.

“She should be banned for life,” he says. “Assuming this actually happened and this isn’t some kind of prank that she’s putting out there, she’s going viral on the internet.”

He says Carnival can “easily identify this person with their facial recognition software” and says he hopes she gets caught.

The Daily Dot has reached out to Aronfeld and Carnival via email regarding the video.

While it is certainly not recommended to ingest Krazy glue and other similar Super Glue-like adhesives, the glue becomes inert and polymerizes, or firms up, when exposed to moisture. The most immediate risk from the use of this glue, per super glue manufacturer Aron Alpha , is from the fumes emitted before the glue has cured. As for the other concern expressed by Aronfeld, the tap water on cruise ships is potable and generally considered safe to drink unless authorities on the ship indicate otherwise.

That said—no one wants to drink after a stranger.

@cruiseshiplawyer Talk about a questionable TikTok trend… ban her for life, please 🛳️🚫 This woman's 'talent' of reusing water and sealing it with crazy glue is not only gross, but potentially dangerous 😷 Let's keep our sea cruises clean and safe! #banherforlife #waterthief #cruiseshipproblems #carnivalcruisescandal #tapwaterwoes #reusingbottles #questionablehealthrisk #gluesealed #hygienehazard #cruiselawyer ♬ original sound – Spencer Aronfeld

The video left many viewers disgusted, with some saying they were put off water bottles provided for them on cruise ships for good.

“Never even considered this could happen so now I will never drink them again,” one commenter wrote.

“Yeah this is gross,” another echoed. “Never drinking the complimentary waters again.”

“Wow,” one user said. “Taking note to get my water from bar only….”

Others were frustrated with the Carnival passenger shown in the video, who ostensibly was trying to avoid paying for the water bottles.

“The waters are not free,” one commenter wrote. “That’s why she did the video just show how to drink them and then cheat so you don’t get charged. Terrible.”

“Some people are just looking for trouble,” another commented. “Why will she do that?”

“Who would do this when you’re on a cruise?” a commenter wrote. “Don’t believe it.”

Here are the documents and costs to keep in mind when planning a cruise

carnival cruise drinks to bring

As I made plans this summer to take a cruise, I worked my way through my pre-travel checklist. I booked my flights, researched ground transportation options and selected a hotel for the night before boarding.

But I had yet to tick one important box: renewing my expired passport .

I had not traveled internationally since the pandemic began and needed a deadline to motivate me, so shortly before my  sailing from the Netherlands to New York , I filled out the application, paid the fees, and did a quick photo shoot at my local Walgreens.

Passports are just one of the documents travelers may need when taking a cruise, which can add to the overall cost of a trip. Here's what travelers should have on hand and what costs they might encounter before and during their trip:

U.S. citizens booked on closed-loop cruises – those that start and end at the same U.S. port – can enter the country with a government-issued photo ID and birth certificate instead, but the State Department encourages having a passport "in case of an emergency, such as an unexpected medical air evacuation or the ship docking at an alternate port," according to its website . Cruise lines may also require it.

Denise Jewell, owner of Opulence Travel Agency, also recommends having a passport, even on closed-loop cruises, in case you don't make it back to the ship in time during a stop.

"It'll be much easier to deal with the locals if you have a passport as opposed to a birth certificate," Jewell said.

If travelers need to apply for or renew a passport, "the sooner you get started the better," said Danny Genung, CEO of travel agency Harr Travel. He suggested beginning that process as soon as you book your trip, even if it's a year in advance.

"This is one of the big pain points and stress points of travel if you wait too long," Genung said.

Even travelers who have procrastinated, though, may not be out of luck. I mailed my passport renewal application on Sept. 7 and paid about $208 in fees overall, including expedited service. I received my new passport on Oct. 3, about two weeks before my trip.

What costs will travelers encounter while taking a cruise?

Many costs associated with a cruise are included in the fare travelers pay when they book. "I think one of the things I would point out is, spending money on a cruise ship is a choice," said Genung, noting that he has been on many cruises and spent nothing additional except on gratuities. However, with mainstream cruise lines, there are generally some key expenses to keep in mind (on luxury lines, many of these costs are likely to be included in the fare).

►  Taxes, fees and port expenses : In addition to the fare, travelers must pay taxes, fees and port expenses, said Brigitte Feinberg, a travel adviser and independent affiliate of Avenue Two Travel. Those can vary based on the specifics of your trip.

► Gratuities: On mainstream lines such as Royal Caribbean International, Feinberg said, gratuities are automatically added to travelers' bills on a per person, per day basis.

Those prices can vary. Royal Caribbean  charges $16 per guest each day staying in non-suite staterooms, and $18.50 for those in suites, while Carnival Cruise Line applies a $14.50 daily charge per passenger for non-suite rooms, and $16.50 for guests in suites, according to their websites.

Guests can prepay those gratuities, so they "don't have to worry about that bill at the end of the cruise," Feinberg said, or pay them as part of the final bill. Passengers can also adjust the gratuities up or down, though Feinberg does not recommend the latter.

She added that some guests also bring cash to tip crew members directly who "went above and beyond" during the trip.

► Some food and drinks:  While much of the food is included on mainstream lines, some restaurants and items may cost extra.

On my October Holland America Line cruise, I visited specialty restaurants with prices ranging from $19 to $49 per person, plus an 18% gratuity.

Lines such as Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line also include basic drinks like iced tea and regular coffee while charging for others. Genung said, "in a lot of cases there's good value" in pre-purchasing specialty dining or beverage packages.

► Shore excursions:  On mainstream cruise lines, Feinberg said, excursions are not included either. "Yes, the room's only $300 for a week, but by the time you're all said and done you're going to be spending a lot more than that," she said.

She said excursions can run from $50 to hundreds of dollars per person.

Most cruise lines have promotional sales on excursions and other packages before the cruise, Genung said, which can offer "significant savings," particularly for families traveling together.

"I have two little kiddos myself, and it's a lot more expensive to travel than when it was just my wife and I," he said. "So, you know, when you multiply an unexpected cost times four, or five or six, it gets pretty exponential."

► Wi-Fi:  Many cruise lines charge extra for Wi-Fi, but the price may depend on your needs.

Norwegian Cruise Line, for instance, sells both basic and premium options for one, two, and four devices, starting at $25.50 per day if guests purchase online and about $30 per day if they purchase on board, according to its website . The line also sells a 250-minute option.

Genung noted that it is almost always cheaper to purchase the internet prior to boarding than it is after getting on the ship.

► Laundry:  Depending on the length of the sailing, travelers may run out of clean clothes as I did on my October transatlantic cruise.

Like many mainstream lines,Holland America offered laundry services with several options, to choose from. I picked the Laundry By the Bag package, which cost $30 for as many clothes as I could fit in a bag the line placed in my stateroom closet.

There was also an Unlimited Pressing package for $75 and an Unlimited Laundry option for $135, including pressing, both for the duration of the sailing, according to an info sheet in my stateroom.

Feinberg noted that some cruise lines also have laundry rooms where guests can wash and dry their own clothes, such as Carnival, which charges $3.50 for each washer load, and $3.50 per dryer load, according to its website .
