Champaner & Pavagadh Archaeological Park Panchmahal

  • About Place

About the Place:  A UNESCO Heritage site, Champaner and Pavagadh are often clubbed together as one of the most engaging historical attractions of Gujarat. Pavagadh stands on top of the hill that looks over the sprawl of monuments at the base in Champaner. The duo makes a rich heritage site dotted with forts, mosques, monuments, tombs, arches, temples, step-wells and fortresses from 8th to 14th century. Today, throngs of pilgrims ascend Pavagadh to worship at the important Kalikamata Temple, dedicated to the goddess Kali, who sits atop the summit. Champaner is the only unchanged Islamic-Mughal city over the centuries, offering an authentic flavour of architecture of the era. Juxtaposed to this is the Kalika Mata Temple on the Pavagadh Hill, where thousands congregate during Navratris.

At the heart of Champaner, is the Citadel, whose most impressive features are its 16th-century monumental mosques (no longer used for worship), with their beautiful blending of Islamic and Hindu architecture. The huge Jami Masjid, just outside the Citadel’s east gate, boasts of a wonderful carved entrance porch that leads into a lovely courtyard surrounded by a pillared corridor. The prayer hall has two tall central minarets, further superb stone carving, multiple domes, finely latticed windows and seven  mihrabs  (prayer niches) along the back wall.

Other beautiful mosques include the Saher ki Masjid, behind the ticket office inside the Citadel, which was probably the private royal mosque, and the Kevda Masjid, 300m north of the Citadel and about 600m west of the Jami Masjid. Here you can climb narrow stairs to the roof, and higher up the minarets, to spot other mosques even further out into the countryside – Nagina Masjid, 500m north, with no minarets but exquisite geometric carving, particularly on the tomb next to it, and Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid, 800m east, on a high platform and with a fluted central dome. The twin minarets resembling factory chimneys, about 1 km west, adorn the Brick Minar ki Masjid, a rare brick tomb.

Brief History:  Pavagadh became the capital of the Chauhan Rajputs around 1300, but in 1484 was taken by the Gujarat Sultan Mahmud Begada, after a 20-month siege; the Rajputs committed  jauhar  (ritual mass suicide) in the face of defeat. Following his capture of Pavagadh, Sultan Mahmud Begada turned Champaner, at the base of the hill, into a splendid new capital. But its glory was brief: when it was captured by Mughal emperor Humayun in 1535, the Gujarati capital reverted to Ahmedabad, and Champaner fell into ruin.

ultimate guide to visiting champaner payagadh

How to Visit Champaner Pavagadh, Gujarat

Champaner Pavagadh made it onto our list of places to visit in Gujarat because it was added to the UNESCO list of Indian sites in 2004.  It’s listed as an outstanding blend of Hindu-Muslim architecture.  The sites date back to a regional Capital City built in the 16th century that now represents cultures that have disappeared. UNESCO also referenced that the Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park remains a place of worship and continuous pilgrimage for Hindu believers. Here’s how to visit Champaner Pavagadh.

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN COMPENSATED AND AFFILIATE LINKS MORE INFORMATION IN  OUR DISCLAIMER

This site is a gloriously quiet, empty site, with amazingly little graffiti and has spectacular detail on stone carving.  Go before it gets too busy! On our trip, we saw six other people visiting. This might be a UNESCO World Heritage site in India, but its location and challenges getting there mean that you’ll likely have the place to yourself! Here’s how to visit Champaner Pavagadh.

Taking a Tour of Champaner Pavagadh

Although we were based in Vadodara for our visit, it’s also possible to visit Champaner Pavagadh as a day trip from Ahmedabad , or you can now take a guided tour from Ahmedobad – using a Ministry of Tourism approved guide. Here is the best option.

EASIEST WAY TO VISIT

Champaner Pavagadh

Take a Tour to Champaner Pavagadh

It’s an easy day trip from Ahmedabad to visit Champaner Pavagadh, and you’ll get to see all the temples and buildings in air conditioned comfort. Head out for a fabulous time – but book early.

Entry Fees to Champaner Pavagadh

Entry fees are 10 INR for Indians and 250 for Foreigners (Children up to 15 are free). Still photography is free. Ticket offices open at 8 am.  If you do get there earlier, the fences are low enough to climb over – and of course pay for the ticket later.

Getting to Champaner Pavagadh

Getting to Champaner Pavagadh seemed like an easy option. We’d be based in the city of Vadodara .  We planned to take a local bus to the UNESCO ruined site and have a wander around. Of course, nothing is EVER that simple in India

All the Gujarat tourism websites tell you that it’s possible to get a bus, but that it’s better to take a private car. Only one other reference that we found indicated taking a bus.  They cunningly failed to mention details and that’s becoming my pet hate. I wasn’t too surprised when we arrived at the bus station (opposite the train station) this morning and couldn’t find any details in English.  Or anyone who spoke more English than “No, no bus, take a taxi”. If you know which bus and how to get there, please do post details!

Arranging a Car to Champaner Pavagadh

Our hotel ( the Hampton Inn )  could arrange a car for us. We’re using Hilton Honors points to have two nights of luxury here before they expire. However, the smallest and cheapest car wasn’t available.  The cost would now be 1700 INR for 8 hours and 80 kilometers.  Plus 10 rupees per kilometer after that.

“So how much is that?” I asked, – oh wait, they said.  It would be 1900 INR because we’d need the package that was 120 kilometers.  Champaner Pavagadh was 100 kilometers. Oh and also plus tax.

We walked back to the railway station, frustrated with being unable to get a straight answer.  From there we picked up a cab, driven by Ragi, from the taxi rank.  It cost us 1500 INR all-inclusive, apart from the 110 INR toll for the road.

How to Go From Vadodara to Champaner Pavagadh

It takes an hour or so in the car to cover the 50 or so kilometers to Champaner Pavagadh.  In terms of layout, it’s a little like Annaradhapura in Sri Lanka. Which of course isn’t useful if you’ve never been there. Let me explain more.

The Layout of Champaner Pavagadh

The Champaner Pavagadh site is actually (in its base form), in two parts. There’s the bit that’s on the hill at 830m above sea level.  That’s Pavagadh, where pilgrims head up to the Kalika Mata Temple.  Then there’s Champaner, the ruins of an old walled town, citadel, and its surrounding mosques and buildings.

Map of Champaner Pavagadh

Pavagadh has several plateaus on the way to the top – and there’s a road so far up, followed by a cable way, and then a final 1 kilometer walk to the top, where you’ll find the Kalika Mata Temple. We didn’t visit this part, we concentrated on Champaner.

The IAS Heritage Guide to Champaner-Pavagadh

The Indian Archaeological Society publishes a heritage guide, which you can purchase from the ticket offices (at the Shahar-Ki Masjid or the Jami Masjid) for 100 INR.

IAS Guide to Champaner Pavagadh

These guides are not on display and you will have to ask for them, but they’re worth it. They might have guides for other locations on display, so if you’re reading this ahead of time, pick one up ahead of time, it will help you plan your time here.

The sites are spread over a pretty big area. You can see some idea of the distance from this view of the Jami Masjid from the roof of the Kevda Masjid.

View of the Jami Masjid from the roof of the Kevda Masjid

Getting Around Champaner Pavagadh

If you’ve taken the local bus, then you’ll more than likely end up hiring a local auto-rickshaw to get around, or it will be a long slog even just to see the main sites. You could of course hop on one of the shared autos, if you’re OK with sitting on the roof, or hanging off the back and getting up close and personal with everyone else.

Ragi drove us around to the specific sites – although we walked between the Kevda Masjid and the Nagina Masjid – it’s about 800 meters each way – as there were huge thorns both on the ground and in the bushes along the side of the “track” – because it’s not enough of anything to be a road!

The Best Map of Champaner Pavagadh.

In the heritage guide is a useful map – the only one we found in days of searching, so here it is again.

You’ll notice a distinct lack of roads on this map because most of those squiggles are actually the old city walls. The road from Vadodara is the one that heads to Halol, so you enter first of all past the Ek-Minar-Ki-Masjid on your left and the Panch-Mahuda-Ki Masjid on your right. But you likely won’t spot them.

Signage here is lacking and the sites themselves are well hidden and well off the road (and that’s a good thing!). Having Ragi drive us made all of that easy. Even if the weather hadn’t been so hot, this would have been a long hike around.

More on How Champaner is Laid Out

The sites that are on the north side of the road are the ones in Champaner and MOST of the sites on the south side of the road are on the Pavagadh Hill.

The Best Order to see Champaner Pavagadh Sites

Having been around the sites, I’d recommend seeing them in the following order.

  • Shahar-Ki Masjid
  • Three Cells
  • Kabutar Khana Pavilion
  • Khajuri Masjid
  • Kevda Masjid
  • Nagina Masjid
  • Jami Masjid
  • Sakar Khans’s Tomb
  • Ek-Minar-Ki Masjid

(the final two because they’re on the way back to Vadodara, there are great views to Pavagadh and a glorious sense of peace at Ek-Minar).

Shahar-Ki Masjid – Champaner Pavagadh

We started at the Shahar-Ki Masjid, just inside the gates to the Citadel and behind a gate with a small ticket office attached. This is a quiet sleepy place, there won’t be guides hanging around to see if they can take your money, so don’t forget to buy the Archeological Society guide – or read up on the sites before you get there.

Shahar-Ki Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh

This is a glorious site – if the sky is clear, then you’ll see Pavagadh in the background, it was the private mosque for the royal family. There are five mihrabs (prayer recesses) in the back wall and the entrance arch is flanked by two gloriously carved minarets.

Shahar-Ki Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh (2)

Mandiv – Customs House

As you leave the mosque, turn left out of the gate and take a short walk – at the end of this lane – on your right, is the old Mandiv or Customs House. There’s not much left.

The Mandir Customs House Champaner Pavagadh

Leaving the Mandiv behind, and heading back towards the mosque, on the right-hand side, behind a small kissing gate are the Three Cells or Chor Kothardi – built to house prisoners sometime between 1459 and 1511. There’s again not much to see and it’s pretty stinky inside.

Khabutar Khana Pavilion and Khajuri Masjid – Champaner Pavagadh

The pavilion stands on the edge of a small lake, opposite the ruins of the Khajuri Masjid.  There are holes in the upper section for pigeons and some pleasant views over the water and surrounding countryside. The ruins of the Masjid are literally just a few arches. If you’re walking.. don’t bother coming out here.

Kevda Masjid – Champaner Pavagadh

Driving back past the Jami Masjid (trust me, leave it till later) and veering off to the right, the lane that leads to the Kevda Masjid was hidden between two shacks and a tractor. Ragi had to ask a local if it was the right track, but it was worth it when we got the kilometer or so down the narrow, bumpy thorn infested track.

There’s a basic cenotaph in front of this mosque.

Kevda Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh

The mosque is rectangular with a two-storied prayer hall.

Kevda Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh Carved Miniarets

Two minarets on either side of the entranceway are spectacularly carved.  The central dome is collapsed but don’t let that stop you.

Kevda Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh Collapsed Central Dome

There’s a small stone spiral staircase in each of the minarets  Only one was open to the bottom when we visited.  You’ll need a torch or a cell phone flashlight to see your way up and down.  There were no spider webs or bats or anything nasty to worry about.

On the first floor, you can walk out onto the roof, walk around the collapsed dome area, but you can also go higher.

Right to the top of the minarets. And it’s worth it.

The view from the top is lovely. Not only do you see the minarets of the Jami Masjid, but you’ll get a sense of the scale of the ruins.

View from the top of Kevda Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh

Nagina Masjid – Champaner Pavagadh

Leaving Kevda, we walked 800 meters or so to Nagina Masjid (follow the track around behind Kevda walking fully behind it, and just walk until you find Nagina). There was some shade, but not a great deal.

The cenotaph in front of this mosque is spectacular.

Nagina Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh Entrace

The carving on both the columns and the edging around the collapsed dome is exquisite.

Nagina Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh Arch

Nagina looks a little unfinished, because the minarets are stopped at the second level, but again, the carving is incredible.

Nagina Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh Unfinished Second Level

Inside there are three mihrabs and 80 columns supporting the roof. There is again a spiral staircase that you can take up to the first floor and also to the top of the minarets too.

While it is possible to climb out onto the roof, the only word I understood from the locals was “heart attack”, so we didn’t and just waved at them instead.

It’s a hike back to Kevda where the car is and then the main attraction.

Jami Masjid – Champaner Pavagadh

The Islamic style of architecture flourished here in Gujarat for about 250 years from the 14th century, the Jami Masjid here at Champaner is the best example of the final period of time. The design of mosques took some time to materialize, but generally follows the same themes:

There is generally an open quadrangle.  This is enclosed on three sides by covered cloisters that are connected to the prayer hall.

Jami Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh

The prayer hall has arched mihrabs or prayer recesses in the back wall, which indicate the direction of Mecca.

Minarets were often added later. In Gujarat a special feature was added, the clerestory, in the center of the prayer hall, to bring in air and light.

The Jami Masjid is the most imposing and spectacular building in Champaner, that’s why you should leave it until (almost) last.

Jami Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh (2)

I got stuck in the entrance way, because the carving was wonderful.  Nigel dragged me through with a “don’t just stop here.” You know when you walked through the great gate at the Taj Mahal? He said.  It’s almost the same when you walk through the entrance way here. ” And yes. It was. It’s spectacular.

Jami Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh Entrance

The Muluk Khana at Jami Masijd

There is a separate screened off entrance – the Muluk Khana that was reserved for Royal Ladies.

There are glorious mihrabs.

The Muluk Khana at Jami Masijd

Carvings on the ceiling.

Ceiling at The Muluk Khana at Jami Masijd Champaner Pavagadh

There are 172 pillars to hold up the domes and ceiling.

172 pillars at The Muluk Khana at Jami Masijd Champaner Pavagadh

It is spectacular.

Jami Masjid Champaner Pavagadh

Leaving Jami Masjid and taking the road back towards Vadodara we head for our penultimate stop, Sakar Khans Tomb.

Sakar Khans’ Tomb – Champaner Pavagadh

This is the largest tomb structure in the old city – there’s not much to see. It’s square, covered with a large dome. There are open arches on each side and floral motifs decorate each side. There are views of Pavadgah behind the tomb.

Sakar Khans' Tomb - Champaner Pavagadh

Ek-Minar-Ki Masjid – Champaner Pavagadh

Our final stop in Champaner is here. It’s off the road to the right, down a small lane. There is a sign at the roadway, but it’s pretty overgrown. When we get there, two guys are sat in the shade another pulls up on a motorbike with his lunch. If we thought the rest of Champaner was sleepy, then this takes the biscuit.

There’s a cursory glance at our tickets and more of a surprised look that we’re actually here. Because there’s not much here.

Just the one minaret, with spectacular carving.

Ek-Minar-Ki Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh

There are five stories on the minaret, the lower is square, the first has eight sides, the second and third have sixteen and the top is circular.

Exquisite Carving at Ek-Minar-Ki Masjid - Champaner Pavagadh

A tank. And – says the guide, “evidence of a well”.

Well - Champaner Pavagadh

Yup. That looks like evidence to me.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Champaner Pavagadh

What it does leave us with, as we take our leave of Champaner. Is an incredible sense of peace. Of what I think a UNESCO site should be. Maintained and not destroyed or Disneyfied by the desire to churn through as many tourists as possible – like the Shilin Stone Forest in China for instance.

We’ve spent perhaps 3 hours pottering slowly around Champaner, plus an hour each way in the car, it’s been a relaxed and lovely view into the history of this glorious place, there’s definitely something to be said for the UNESCO sites that are off the beaten track!

This is some of my favourite architecture on your trip, so far. Amazing!

It is truly stunning and the more so because it was empty. Wait until you see Sanchi… And Khajuraho oh and the Golden Temple!

champaner tour

Thanks for this fantastic blog post. Really helped me plan my day yesterday, and it was great.

Two bits of info back:

1. The public bus leaves from the ST Bus Stand slightly north of the railway station, across the road in a big shopping centre. Hourly from near stands 16/17/18, first bus at 6am. It turns up and they shout Pavagadh! Pavagadh! Pavagadh! And you have to rush, buy tickets once on board. Ask at counters to confirm time and ask people near stands to find someone else going. Cost 50 rupee. On return, I used a shared taxi (Baroda! Baroda! Baroda!) cost 100.

2. Best map I found was Google Maps. You can download areas for offline use now. The major temples in this post are all on there. GPS is invaluable for quickly navigating around. It’s about 1km between each temple – I walked round the main 5 or so really easily with no car or rick.

I did Champaner at 7.30am (super peaceful up the minarets, great country views) then did Pavagadh after. Was fine.

Thanks Francis! I’ll put that into the blog and credit you. I guess we didn’t get up early enough and were at the wrong bus station! Glad you enjoyed it and the peace of the place!

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, located in the Panchmahal District of Gujarat State in north-western India, features a concentration of archaeological, historical, and living cultural heritage properties cradled in an impressive landscape. Focused on Pavagadh Hill, a volcanic formation that rises 800 m above the surrounding plains, the property includes the remains of settlements dating from the prehistoric to medieval periods, the latter represented by a hill-fortress of an early (14th-century) Hindu capital and the remains of an Islamic state capital founded in the 15th century. The large property, comprised of 12 separate areas, contains the remains of fortifications, palaces, religious buildings, residential precincts, and water-retaining installations, as well as the living village of Champaner.

This area was conquered in the 13th century by the Khichi Chauhan Rajputs, who built their first settlement on top of Pavagadh Hill and fortification walls along the plateau below the hill. The earliest built remains from this period include temples, and amongst the important vestiges are water-retention systems. The Turkish rulers of Gujarat conquered the hill-fortress in 1484. With Sultan Mehmud Begda’s decision to make this his capital, the most important historic phase of this site began. The settlement of Champaner at the foot of the hill was rebuilt and remained the capital of Gujarat until 1536, when it was abandoned.

Except for the structural remains of the main buildings and forts, most parts of the capital city remain buried and unexcavated, though the planning and integration of the essential features of a city – royal estates, utilities, religious edifices, and spaces – can be seen and interpreted. Champaner-Pavagadh’s 14th-century temples and water-retaining installations, together with the later capital city’s religious, military, and agricultural structures, represent both Hindu and Muslim architecture. Champaner’s importance as a capital and residence of a sultan are best illustrated in the Great Mosque (Jama Masjid), which became a model for later mosque architecture in India. At Champaner, the land, the people, and the built heritage are each components of a complex, and dynamic process. The Brahmanical temple of Kalika Mata (the guardian goddess of the hill) atop Pavagadh Hill is an important living shrine, attracting a large number of pilgrims from Gujarat and other parts of the country throughout the year.

Criterion (iii): The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park with its ancient architecture, temples and special water-retaining installations together with its religious, military and agricultural structures, dating back to the regional Capital City built by Mehmud Begda in the 16th century, represents cultures which have disappeared.

Criterion (iv): The structures represent a perfect blend of Hindu-Moslem architecture, mainly in the Great Mosque (Jama Masjid), which became a model for later mosque architecture in India. This special style comes from the significant period of regional sultanates.

Criterion (v): The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is an outstanding example of a very short living capital, making the best use of its setting, topography and natural features. It is quite vulnerable due to abandonment, forest takeover and modern life.

Criterion (vi): The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is a place of worship and continuous pilgrimage for Hindu believers.

Within the boundaries of Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park are located all the known elements necessary to express the Outstanding Universal Value of the property, including the ensemble of prehistoric and early- and late-medieval period royal, sophisticated, and ordinary settlements and building complexes. The archaeological deposits are largely unexcavated. The 1328.89-ha property is of adequate size to ensure the complete representation of the features and processes that convey its significance. The property deals with small numbers of visitors at its centrally protected monuments, but with a large number of visitors at its Brahmanical religious shrine, the Kalika Mata temple, atop the hill. The landscape and buildings are well kept and complete despite considerable structural conservation work required. The preserved architecture blends flawlessly with the surrounding cityscape, underlying and overlooking the picturesque rim of nearby hillocks. There are no perceptible threats to the cultural relics, nor does the property suffer from adverse effects owing to development and/or neglect. There are buffer zones that total 2911.74 ha.

Authenticity

The property is fully authentic in terms of its location and setting, forms and designs, and materials and substances. Structural and chemical conservation of the protected monuments and sites has been undertaken, while other monuments and archaeological remains have been left largely as they were found in order to keep the possibility open for others to understand the original attributes and value of a given heritage ensemble, and especially for future generations to develop other interpretations along current scientific lines. In a limited number of cases where the stability of a monument was under threat, minimal restoration has been undertaken, clearly demarcating and documenting the scale of restoration. No change in design, workmanship or setting was made. The attributes that sustain the Outstanding Universal Value of the property – which is the only remaining complete and unchanged Islamic pre-Mughal city – are thus truthfully and credibly expressed, and fully convey the value of the property.

Protection and management requirements

Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, whose multiple owners include the Archaeological Survey of India, the Gujarat State Forest Department, State Department of Archaeology, and State Revenue Department, Jai Kalika Temple Trust, Jain Temple Trusts, Fakir Sect Trust, and the private sector, is protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act (1958) and Rules (1959), amendments (1992), and Amendment and Validation Act (2010), Gujarat Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (1965), and Champaner-Pavagadh World Heritage Area Management Authority Act (2006), as well as various Forest Acts and the Gujarat Panchayats Act (1961). Thirty-nine monuments and sites are individually protected.

A hierarchical framework of archaeologists and conservators at the federal as well as State levels is available to inform the conservation, preservation, and management of the property. The Archaeological Survey of India works with the Champaner-Pavagadh World Heritage Area Management Authority to manage the property. The latter has been formulated under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary to the Government of Gujarat, and to which all stakeholders are members, including the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India. An Integrated Management Plan, as recommended by the World Heritage Committee to underpin conservation decisions and interventions, has been developed and adopted. Sustaining the Outstanding Universal Value of the property over time will require continuing to monitor the state of conservation of the property and to assess the implementation of the legal and institutional tools and the Management Plan.

Are Champaner and Pavagadh the same?

While the name is always almost taken together, the two places – Champaner and Pavagadh are not the same. They are located within a distance of 1.5 km from each other. While Pavagadh is a hill that is best known for the Kalika Mata temple, Champaner refers to the adjoining area around the hill. The Champaner fortress was built across the Pavagadh hill and that along with the Kalika Mata temple and other Jain temples of this area is part of what is now called the Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park.

History of Champaner-Pavagadh

Archaeological evidence traces the history of Champaner and Pavagadh back to the Stone age. Mythologically it connects the hill of Pavagadh to the story of Goddess Sati who self-immolated herself when her husband Lord Shiva was insulted by her father. What followed was immense destruction by the grief-stricken Lord Shiva. To help him regain his composure and bring back some balance to the Universe, Lord Vishnu cut the dead body of Sati into 51 pieces that fell onto earth. Each of these places transformed into Shaktipeethas (one of which is the Manikarnika Ghat of Varanasi and the other is the Nagadeepa Hindu temple of Jaffna ). It is believed that her right toe fell on Pavagadh hill and since then, the place has become an important Hindu Shaktipeetha.

The Kalika Mata Temple - one of the key places to visit in Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park

Later, around the early 800s AD, this hill around with its surrounding areas came under the kingdom of Vanraj Chauhan of Anhivad Patan . It was he who is said to have named this area Champaner after his friend – a Bhil King named Champa who oversaw this area. The kingdom passed on from him to the Solankis (famous for the Patan Stepwell and Modhera Sun Temple). And eventually, from them, the Kirti Chauhans of Mewar (the clan of famous Prithviraj Chauhan ) took over.

Champaner resisted the attacks of Ahmed Shah in 1419. It remained with the Kirti Chauhans until 1484 when Mahmud Begada ( known for the completion of the construction of Adalaj ni Vav ) attacked it and succeeded in making it a part of his empire. It was he who developed it further and moved his capital from Ahmedabad to Champaner. The citadel was further fortified and prospered in the trade of silk and sandalwood. In fact, Mahmud Begada renamed it as Muhammadabad Champaner .

For 23 years, Champaner remained as the stronghold of the Gujarat Sultans. It finally fell to Humayun in 1536, who managed to invade it upon the death of Ahmed Shah. However, he did not stay there and Champaner Gujarat was abandoned. Later, the British rediscovered it in 1803. At that time, the population of this town was just 500. The British used it mainly as a hub for silk and sandalwood trade.

Champaner Gujarat is the only pre-Mughal Islamic heritage city in India

Eventually, Champaner Pavagadh was recognized for its heritage value, and under ASI as well as the Baroda heritage trust, it was nominated for a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was in 2004 that the Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological park entered this prestigious list of UNESCO World heritage sites . To quote the reason – “joint significance as a living Hindu pilgrimage center, its cluster of Jain temples, its remarkable preserved medieval urban fabric, its exquisite sandstone-carved mosques and tombs and its intangible heritage values” . And with that, you now can expect a diverse set of places to visit in Champaner Gujarat.

Best places to visit in Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park

It must be obvious to you now that this park is literally a heritage city and naturally, has tons of things to see and do. If I had to compare the scale it would be similar to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi . Given my experience, I highly suggest that you keep aside at least 2 – 3 full days to see it in its entirety. Also, note that, unlike Hampi which is better developed, some of these Champaner attractions are quite far from each other and will require a car/ bike.

The places to see in this archaeological park are clustered in two places – along Pavagadh hill and in the main Champaner fort. You can check them out on the map of Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park that I have put together. Bookmark the page right now so that you have it handy when you set out for your visit.

Mosques of Champaner Gujarat

When you walk through the fort of Champaner Pavagadh, there is no missing the elaborately constructed mosques. They are a perfect example of the unique Hindu-Islamic style of architecture that was used by the Gujarat Sultans . There are over eight different mosques in the Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park – of which I was able to do only three. I will not only tell you about these three but also, share the other major ones in this Champaner Pavagadh guide.

Jama Masjid – one of the key attractions of Champaner Pavagadh fort

Jami Masjid - one of the key places to visit in Champaner Gujarat

Considered the most beautiful mosque in Gujarat, the Jama Masjid or the Jami Masjid took around 25 years to be constructed . The mosque is bound to awe you with its scintillating Indo-Islamic architecture. While on one hand you have the classic Islamic arches and on the other, you will find the jharokha style of windows and balconies that are typical of Gujarati and Rajasthani havelis.

Jharoka style of windows in Jami Masjid of Champaner

Built-in 1523, Jami Masjid of Champaner was one of the main mosques used by the residents of the fortress. It is quite big with around 172 pillars and seven mihrabs (prayer niches). There is a separate area enclosed by jhali (perforated screens) for the women to pray. The mosque also, has a tomb that belongs to the priest of Jama Masjid. Close to that is a small tank for ablutions.

One of the mihrabs of the Champaner Jama Masjid

The Mihrabs themselves, are a fusion of architectural styles with the basic prayer niche in its classic arch shape and the insides of it carved with designs typical of Hindu or Jain temples. You will find floral etchings intertwined around the classic pots and creepers. Look up at the roof when you are inside the Jama Masjid and you will spot the quintessential designs of a Jain temple like the one in Ranakpur .

The very Jain-Hindu design of the ceiling in Jama Masjid of Champaner Gujarat

The most impressive and my favorite part of the Champaner Jama Masjid was its e ntrance porch which is enclosed by jhalis and is open on the top. The entire space exudes a majestic aura. The open roof might not have been by design. Possibly a dome covered it but the absence of it in the current state adds to its charm.

If you have been to any of the Ahmedabad mosques like Jama Masjid on the Ahmedabad heritage walk or the Sayyed Siddique mosque, you will be able to spot the similarities in the intricate designs of the Champaner Mosque and its equally mesmerizing minarets.

Sheher ki Masjid (Sahar ki Masjid)

Sahar ki masjid - one of the Champaner attractions

Close to the Jami Masjid is a mosque meant for the use of the royal family. This is what has been named Shahar ki Masjid – though literally, the name means the mosque of the city . This has 2 minarets and five mihrabs within it. The entire structure has been built on a raised platform.

Kevada Masjid & cenotaph

Personally, I found this mosque better than Sahar ki Masjid. It is a little off the usual path in the Champaner Pavagadh park and you will have to pass a narrow road, almost hidden by the overgrown hedges.

Kevada masjid and cenotaph, Champaner, Gujarat

Kevada mosque was built during the reign of Mahmud Begada and has multiple domes . The central one has fallen but the rest are still intact. What makes it unusual are the aesthetic balconies that have pillars. The carvings on the three mihrabs follow the Indo-Islamic theme and have very distinct Hindu designs within them.

The mosque is a two-storeyed one, built on a rectangular raised platform. In front of it, is a lovely cenotaph with fluted pillars. The complex also, housed a tank for ablutions.

Nagina Masjid

The one mosque that I had marked on my itinerary of the Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park was the Nagina Mosque. This mosque is located even further than Kevada mosque and since it was almost time to leave, we had to skip it.

With 3 minars, the Nagina mosque is renowned for its artistic walls and windows. The masjid has 80 pillars and 10 cupolas . The distinguishing feature of this place in Champaner is the intricately carved cenotaph in its complex. I believe, it is a sight to behold.

The unique Hindu-Islamic architecture that can be seen on the various mosques of Champaner

Ek Minar Mosque

The name itself belies what you can expect at this mosque of Champaner Pavagadh. The mosque was built by Bahadur Shah – the last reigning Sultan of Champaner. Most of the structure has gone but what remains is a single minaret.

Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid

With three entrances and minarets, the Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid is another one of those places to visit in Champaner Gujarat. It is believed that its dome was glazed and used to shine bright in the sun.

Other mosques of Champaner, Gujarat

Another one of the gorgeous ceilings of Jami Masjid in Champaner

If you have the time, you can look up these other mosques. Many of them are not well maintained but each of them has their own characteristic.

  • Kamani Masjid – Most of the roof has collapsed but its pillared structure makes it a unique place to visit.
  • Khajuri Masjid – opposite the Kabutar Khana
  • Bawaman Mosque

Temples of Champaner archaeological park

There are at least two major Hindu temples and seven Jain temples located in this archaeological park. Most of these are located on Pavagadh hill. Visiting them will take you at least half a day. You will need to drive from the foothill towards the parking area of Kalika Mata temple. The rest of your journey will be on foot.

There are no entrance fees or tickets to be bought to visit these temples of Pavagadh-Champaner.

Kalika Mata Temple, Pavagadh

The new building of Kalika Mata Temple has been built in a typical Gujarati architecture

Also called the Mahakali Mandir , this living temple is right at the peak of the Pavagadh hill. One has to either climb 1800 steps to traverse a distance of 5 kms or take the modern ropeway (Udan Khatola) to a point from which they need to just climb 300 steps.

This temple is the one that is believed to be the divine Shaktipeeth where Goddess Sati’s right toe had fallen. The deity is said to have been worshipped by the Bhil people and legend has it that Goddess Mahakali had disguised herself to visit the place when the Kirti Chauhans were in power. As she was dancing, the then-in-charge of Champaner – Patal Jaisinh got mesmerized by her beauty and attempted to hold her hand. After warning him thrice, the Goddess cursed him that his kingdom would soon fall. And indeed, he lost his kingdom to Mahmud Begada.

Udan Khatola - the ropeway that takes you half way to Kalika Mata temple on Pavagadh hill

The original shrine has a central idol of Kalika Mata along with Goddess Kali on her right and Bahucharmata (Goddess of fertility) to her left. This shrine has still been left intact while the outer temple has been rebuilt recently. In fact, it was PM Modi who inaugurated this new construction.

Inside Kalika Mata Temple shrine on Pavagadh hill

Built-in a typical Gujarati – Hindu architecture, you can admire the new temple for its lovely ceilings and carved walls. The journey to the temple with its ropeway and local markets lining the path itself is quite an experience. You will literally feel the intense devotion and faith that people have toward this temple.

An idol of the Goddess that is made from stone - one of the things you can see when you climb past the ropeway to the Kalika Mata temple

On the way, don’t miss the Dudhia Talav – a lake that is possibly named for its clear water that was said to have been milky white ( Dudh means milk ) in its hey-days.

Lakulisa Temple

Dudhia Talav - Lakulisa temple is located somewhere along its banks

The Lakulisa temple is one of those monuments of Champaner park that is in ruins. It is not well maintained and can be found along Dudhiya Talav. Sadly, it was something I missed on my tour of Champaner, Gujarat. I believe, even in its dilapidated state, you can see gorgeous carvings of various Gods on its exterior façade. There is also, a carving of Lakulisa – an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva in the temple.

Jain temples of Champaner

Adinath Jain Temple in Champaner archaeological park

There are seven Jain temples in Champaner Gujarat – of which two are very active and highly revered. These two are located closer to the foothills of Pavagadh hill, near Champaner. While I could not visit those, I did spot the Adinath Jain temple while climbing up to the Mahakali Mata Mandir. The temple is a small one with just a single shrine.

Suparshanath Jain Temple - one of the places to see on Pavagadh hill

The other temple called the Suparshanath Digambar Jain Mandir , which is still functional. You can see it near the Dudhia Talav when you climb toward the Kalika Mata Temple. The temple exudes a calm vibe and has a lovely marble shrine.

Gates of Champaner Pavagadh fort

If you are visiting a citadel enclosed within a fort, then you can expect to pass mighty gates with security. It was no surprise when I entered Champaner from Ahmedabad via the Vadodara highway that I had to pass through one of them. Called the City gate , this is one of the many gateways of Champaner fort.

The City Gate that you will pass when you enter the Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park

The arched gate has two guard rooms on either side. You can see the remnants of what might have been the outer fort walls adjoining the gate – one end leading up Pavagadh hill. The other gates of Champaner Pavagadh fort are located along the hill. These include the following –

  • Atak Gate – right at the foothill
  • Budhiya gate with three arched gates
  • Buland Darwaza
  • Makai gate – with an iron bridge

There are many other gates that you will spot on the hill and even inside the main fort area of Champaner. If possible, step out and check them out. Many of them even have bastions built alongside them.

Saat Kaman – the viewpoint of Champaner fort

Saat Kaman -the view point on Champaner Pavagadh fort

Saat means Seven and Kaman refers to arches . This Champaner attraction is an arched passageway that might have been part of a larger fort structure. The gorgeous yellow sandstone area was used as a strategic lookout point by the army. Only 6 of the seven arches survive today. However, you can still walk through those arches and gaze down at the valley below.

Keep an eye out for the catapult stand near the Saat Kaman. The size of it will make you realize how big the attacking rocks or cannonballs might have been.

Water harvesting and storage structures

Most towns are created around a river or a larger source of water. Take Hampi itself which was established around the mighty Tungabhadra river. However, in Champaner there was no big river. Instead, there are several natural ponds or Talavs around the place. It is this along with the ingenious construction of stepwell and tanks that helped this fortress town thrive for 23 years.

Helical stepwell

The Helical Stepwell in Champaner archaeological park

While most of the tanks and stepwells are in ruins, the one that you can still see is the Helical stepwell near the City gate . Devoid of the ornate sculptures that are found in the other Gujarat stepwell like Adalaj Vav (incidentally completed by Mahmud Begada himself), this one will appeal to you for its spiral staircase that takes you right to the water hole. When viewed from the top, it gives you an appearance of a whirlpool.

Adalaj ni Vav near Ahmedabad

One of the most beautiful stepwell that was finished by Mahmud Begada was the Adalaj stepwell in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The place has its own haunting tale.

Vada Talao – the Sunset point

Vada Talao - one of the best places to experience a sunset in Champaner

Many of the natural ponds still exist. In fact, I have already mentioned the Dudhia Talao that is near the Kalika Mata Mandir. While you can always stop at the others are you pass them, the one pond that you could mark for the end of your day in Champaner Pavagadh archaeological park is the Vada Talao. This is on the highway itself and faces Pavagadh hill. It has a structure built in the center of the pond and is a perfect place to enjoy a sunset in Champaner Gujarat .

The Royal palaces of Champaner park

Most of the palace areas have long fallen into ruins. Recent excavations have revealed a structure called as the Amiri Manzil but the same is out of bounds. These are near the Nagina mosque and hence, I could not get a glimpse of the same.

The closest you can get to the royal mansions is a small structure called the Kabutar Khana.

Kabutar Khana

The Kabutar Khana - a home for the pigeons

Kabutar Khana or the pigeon house is right on the main road by the Vada Talav. There are actually two buildings that are separated by the road. The pavilion that is away from the lake used to be like a Summer palace . The open pavilion was cooled by the breeze from the pond and it is believed that the Sultan used to relax here in the company of the pigeons that he raised in the other structure, currently across the road.

Other Champaner attractions

The armoury that can be seen when climbing Pavagadh hill

A lot of discoveries are still being made and many have not yet been documented. As you explore the archaeological park of Champaner Pavagadh, you are bound to spot a few dominant structures. These include –

  • Royal Mint and Armoury – You can see these when you are on the ropeway or near the Saat Kaman
  • Sakar Khan’s Dargah
  • Bhadra gates
  • Navalakha Kothar (on Pavagadh hill)

With that, I conclude this section on the best places to visit in Champaner- Pavagadh archaeological park in Gujarat. The remaining part of this guide will tell equip you with tips on how to plan a visit to Champaner Gujarat.

9 thoughts on “A guide to Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park – A UNESCO World heritage site in Gujarat”

We would definitely want to visit the Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park and see the only pre-Mughal Islamic city that still survives. Stunning to think it dates back to the Stone Age. What an interesting history over the years. Good to know we might need 2-3 days to visit and to learn that some of the sites are quite far apart. This would require some planning for sure. So much variety in the things to see. Good to make a plan of the things you don’t want to miss. Another amazing UNESCO site to explore in India.

Sadly, I have not seen a lot of Gujarat. I would love to see Champaner. The sculpted ceilings are amazing. The intricately carved motifs make it so attractive. And keeping your advice in mind, I would keep more than a day and also probably find a native to accompany me. That Helica stepwell does look a little scary from the top. I have seen so many red structures in the north, that the yellow ones seem like a real novelty.

Oh no! I feel bad you had to miss a mosque you wanted to see. That’s how traveling goes sometimes, though. Also, the history of the area is really interesting. It seems like a lot of folks wanted control of the area. I was just in India and am fascinated by the number of UNESCO sites. They’re all so lovely and stately!

So many gorgeous UNESCO sites to see! I can see why Champaner Archaelogical Park would be at the top of the list. The incredible architecture and intricate details of the mosques are just stunning. Who would have thought that buildings of that era could be so well-crafted?

I am impressed by the UNESCO sites in Gujarat! I have not done much of traveling in Gujarat except to Dwarka many years ago. I would love to visit Champaner Archaelogical Park someday. The motifs and the ceiling architecture look amazing. Kalika Mata Temple architecture looks totally unique. I would love to visit Helical stepwell – certainly not for those with fear of heights! 🙂

What a wonder to see the Champaner pavadagh archaeological park. It feels like being back in time wandering through a time machine to see these beautiful structures built from the past. I am awed by the Jama and Kevada Masjid. I would love to visit the Saat Kaman and walk through its six remaining archways and the Helical Stepwell is just ripe for a photo opportunity. Love the history lesson behind the places as well!

The Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park Gujarat looks so big, you would definitely need at least a day to see it all. It’s good to know that the name refers to two different areas, and not just one. It’s amazing how well preserved the sites and the buildings are. You can really imagine how life here in the past used to be, just by walking around the sites. The architecture of the Jama Masjid is so beautful, with all those intricate elements sculpted in the stones. It’s good that there is an easier way now to reach Kalika Mata Temple, with the cable car. I can’t imagine climbing so many steps, especially during the hot months.

I love visiting UNESCO sites and learning about their history. The archeological site of Champaner-Pavagadh looke amazingly well-preserved and interesting. I love sited where you can see different religious influences like Hinduism, Islam and Jain. And the helical steps are such a bummer picture motif!

I’m impressed seeing the combined Hindu and Islamic architecture at the mosques in Champaner. I wonder if people are still praying there. The temples look gorgeous, but the Helical Stepwell intrigued me more. I can’t imagine how they found the pond, dug the dirt around it, and built a beautiful stepwell to the water. If I’m not mistaken, there’s a stepwell similar to this, too. Unfortunately, I don’t recall the name of the temple.

Champaner - Pavagadh Archaeological Park - History, Timings & Entry Fee

champaner tour

India | Gujarat | Vadodara

#14 of 22 places to visit in vadodara, distance (from vadodara): 49 kms, visited from: vadodara, trip duration (including travel): 4 hours/half day, place location: at champaner, transportation options: bus / cab, website: na, phone no: na, place address: na, travel tips: none.

At a distance of 49 km from Vadodara, Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the ancient city of Champaner. It is one of the popular places of heritage in Gujarat , and among the prime places to visit as part of Vadodara tour packages . Covering over an area of 1,329 hectares, Champaner - Pavagadh Archeological Park is located around the historical city of Champaner, founded by the Rajput King Vanraj Chavda in the 8th century. Due to its strategic point on the trade routes, it lured many invaders including Khalji Dynasty, Chauhan Gurjars, Solanki kings, Khichi Chauhans. Later Mahmud Begada captured the city in 1484 and rebuilt Champaner into a splendid new capital. The region faced major devastation in 1535 CE when looted by Mughal Emperor, Humayun who made Ahmedabad the capital city again to control Gujarat. This marked the start of the decline of Champaner, which slowly fell into ruins. Later, ASI had rediscovered the city with 39 standing monuments that are a beautiful confluence of Hindu, Jain, and Islamic architectural styles. Among the prominent heritage sites near Ahmedabad , it was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2004. The heritage site is studded with prehistoric (chalcolithic) sites, a hill fortress of the early Hindu capital, and remains of the 16th-century capital of the state of Gujarat. The site also includes other vestiges, fortifications, palaces, Jain and Hindu temples, mosques, residential precincts, agricultural structures, and water installations such as step wells and tanks dating from the 8th to the 14th centuries. The transition between Hindu and Muslim culture and architecture in the late 15th to early 16th century is documented in the park, particularly the early Islamic and pre-Mughal city that has remained without any change. Every corner of Champaner-Pavagadh Archeological Park is worth exploring as it is one of the must-visit Vadodara tourist attractions . There are generally eleven types of monuments at Champaner-Pavagadh and these buildings are situated on the plains of Champaner and on the hills of Pavagadh. Jami Masjid, Sahar ki Masjid, Kalika Mata Temple, Tomb of Sikander Shah, Ek Minar ki Masjid, Kevada Masjid, Helical stepped well, Mandvi or Custom House, Nagina Masjid, Pavagadh Hill, and Citadel Walls are the prominent structures inside the park. Currently, all these historical monuments are under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India. The Kalika Mata Temple, located on top of the 800 m high Pavagadh Hill, is an important Hindu shrine in the region, attracting large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year. Timings: 8 AM - 5 PM Entry Fee: Rs. 30 for Indians & Rs. 500 for Foreigners

  • minutilara 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not well maintained, was disappointed with the attitude of the security too. The palace is huge but a very small portion is open for visitors and the palace is not well maintained since we saw grass growing on top of the palace. It has beautiful gold course which is well maintained but visitors are not allowed to sit anywhere within the premises, just take a tour and leave. Read more Written 30 October 2023
  • VibVai 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Quite a disappointment !!! Our storyteller was a young college kid and has done this only for 2 mths so did not have enough experience. Was nor even aware that museum and picture gallery were closed when he asked us to visit and go inside/closer to take pics. Also he did the tour in just 1 hour so clearly did not have enough material to cover for 2 hrs so highly overcharged for this tour. We booked it considering it was through Viator so would be value for money and reliable. However it seems the local tour operator used Yo Tours is just short changing and providing a sub optimal product for this price and is least bothered as even when I shared feedback did not get any call back for support.Request a refund or due compensation for this poor experience. • FamilieF123 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do not book Yo Tours Goa under any circumstances - they don't turn up or react! Don't book Yo Tours Goa !!!!!!! THEY DON'T TURN UP (WARNING - potential fraud) !! I should have known when someone else complained about the shorter tour provided by Yo Tours Goa that this was not a good sign. The tour did not even take place! I booked on Friday 19:30 for a Saturday 9am tour and received a booking confirmation and money was booked from my credit card. At 7:30am I sent an SMS to the company to confirm that I was at the Hotel, as I had not heard the promised response. I At 9am I waited in the hotel lobby, but no one turned up. At 9:45am I rang the number but got the Combox, despite the company claiming they are open from 7am on Saturdays. At 10am I received a message via TripAdvisor saying that due to my late booking they couldn't organise the Tour but would I come to the tour at the same time the next day. I agreed and repeated the same on Sunday ... no one turned up at 9am, I repeatedly called as did the wonderful staff at Hyatt hotel and we only got Combox (despite claiming to be open from 7am Sundays too!). The staff at the Hyatt were concerned that this is a FRAUD company and so I wrote a direct message via Trip advisor saying that I was considering this fraud and had alerted my credit card company to the same. Only then did I get a message saying that due to rain (??what rain) they could not run the tour. I am so annoyed at the waster time (Saturday) and the extra effort on Sunday to then do the tour on my own with a driver. But Vadodara is a wonderful place and the Gujarati people so friendly, welcoming and nice that I had a splendid time despite the Yo Tours Goa failing, and visited all the places on the tour myself. I advise getting a good driver from the Hyatt hotel. Read more Written 30 June 2023

An insight into Champaner-Pavagarh Archaeological Park

Situated in Gujarat, the Champaner-Pavagarh Archaeological Park includes an ancient citadel, a palace, plenty of military structures and buildings, and water installations. These sites together formed the capital region of the empire of Mahmud Begda. The restoration of the capital region was started in 1484 AD, on the foothills of Pavagarh. The restoration took 23 years to complete. Later, Mahmud Begda moved his capital from Ahmadabad to Pavagarh. He was the grandson of the founder of Ahmadabad city- the Great Ahmed Shah.

In Champaner-Pavagarh Archaeological Park, there are lots of Jain and Hindu temples, mosques and other historical edifices. The 'antarala' and 'gudhamandapa' of the temple dating back to the 10th century are the oldest leftovers of this archeological park.

Many other Jain and Hindu temples of 13th – 15th century are found in Champaner-Pavagarh Archaeological Park. These temples are constructed in Nagara style of architecture.

Some of the ancient monuments of this archeological park comprise a chain of fortifications, which are spread from the grasslands to the hilltop of Pavagarh. These citadels have lovely bastions with verandahs in the middle. The Jama Masjid located inside the park area is a fine example of of Hindu-Muslim architecture. In Champaner-Pavagarh Archaeological Park, there are four other Mosques, which are still in decent state.
