Travel time from Chicago to India

How long does it really take to fly from Chicago to India? Here's a sample itinerary for a commercial flight plan. If you want to know the total travel time to reach India, you need to include time at the airports. Eventually, you'll be able to customize this itinerary to select other nearby airports and choose your preferred airline.

Tuesday, 5:18 pm :  start in Chicago drive for about 47 minutes most airlines recommend you get to the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight, so arrive by 7:00 pm at the latest

6:35 pm :  get your boarding pass and go through TSA security allow enough time for long security lines during busy travel seasons or holidays, and prepare for the wait time

7:35 pm :  arrive at the gate once you're ready to board, you can get something to eat in the airport or just relax near the gate

8:05 pm :  prepare for boarding check your boarding pass for your group number or listen to the gate agent as they announce boarding, some airlines require you to be in the boarding area 10-15 minutes before departure or risk losing your seat

8:20 pm :  board National Aviation Company of India Limited d/b/a Air India flight you can scroll down to view other airlines that fly this route

8:30 pm :  this is your scheduled departure time but remember flights can be delayed, so take that into account it takes the plane an average of 15 minutes to taxi to the runway

8:45 pm :  wheels up! take-off from ORD fly for about 16.5 hours in the air

Wednesday, 1:22 pm (local time) :   Indira Gandhi International (DEL) India is 10:30 hours ahead of Chicago so the time in Chicago is actually 1:22 pm you actually arrive the day after you left taxi on the runway for an average of 15 minutes to the gate

1:37 pm (local time) :  arrive at the gate at DEL deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 29.5 hours to your destination

Thursday, 7:04 pm (local time) :  arrive in India

Total travel time: 50 hours

How far is India from Chicago? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 8,062 miles or 12974 km

Flight time: 16 hours, 37 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 49 hours, 47 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 3.1x faster , and saves you about 34 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a fairly long flight, so unless you have a Gulfstream G650 or your own Boeing or Airbus, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

We picked National Aviation Company of India Limited d/b/a Air India for your main flight, but there are other airlines that you should check if you're looking for the cheapest flight, or you need a different schedule. Check the websites of these airlines:

  • National Aviation Company of India Limited d/b/a Air India (AI)

Flight got canceled without any prior information and it caused lot of trouble

Worst ever. No assistance and communication from Emirates crew. No visibility of when the flight is flying. Couldn’t understand if we can go to lounge to take rest. Emirates system at a certain point said flight is not operating and suggested to take the next flight and in few minutes it suddenly opened the gate for boarding. unsupportive and rude crew. Worst experience ever. Flight was delayed by 5 hours so need the compensation for that.

Staff were friendly, and provided great service. The food was plentiful and delicious. Food could have been hotter.

I was traveling business purposes and I only had one carry on and a personal computer back pack . My carry on was 8.5 kg little more than allowable. At jfk airport check in they did not let me carry it . I was little disappointed.

More leg room and comfortable seats at least for long flights

The entertainment selections are amazing. But the live TV is sometimes spotty. If you’re going to have it, then have it. If you can’t make it consistent, then, perhaps it’s better not to have it. The crew are always cordial when approached, but they seem to do the minimum and sit around, talking to each other in the back of the plane during the flight. I realize that delays are not always predictable, but I missed my flight in Dubai because we left 90 minutes late from Washington. I will say that Emirates took very good care of me in Dubai. But I would rather not be delayed.

Probably the best flight I’ve ever been on. Emirates first class is leagues beyond British airways and Lufthansa’s.

Great flight. Comfortable seats, courteous service, and excellent selection for entertainment.

Emirates flights always nice. Service rendered by the staff is superb.I am always comfortable in Emirates flights.

Serving food took so long . Almost time close to lend. Plus during landing air pressure in cabin cuss ear blocked took long time to unblock.

Operated by American Airlines. Very chaotic and the crew was bit rough responding any enquiries. Restricted leg space.. Qatar would have been better

No towels or tissue and chocolate and mint provided before arrival

Qatar airways from Doha to guangzhau was excellent big bird Boeing 777 more room and smoothly flight, I Love it

It was good no problems made it on time for the next flight overseas!

They made us deliberate waste time by holding our passports and boarding passes making us miss the flight

The made us waiting and held our passports and boarding pass making us miss our flights

Not impressed. Only allowed one carry on on such a long flight.

The flight was good but my neighbor had the vent open full power for the whole flight and because the air was blowing from the side instead of from the top and I got very cold and ended up with a sore throat.

Bad experience with the delay n long wait time for connecting flight after missing the connection flight from Doha.

Wore experience due to delay and took me 3 days to reach my destination.

One thing is very important is you people not giving seat arrangement together to couple, senior citizen. You have to take care of senior citizen. Do not look about money. Money is not important everywhere. Make relationship strong is very very important. I like Etiyad air line out of all air line. Food was hot and delicious. Air hostess gave very good service, nice attitude, very good behaviour. I gave 10 out of 10 marks. Thanks Jivraj

Entertainment did not work from flight from Abu Dhabi to Kolkata. Emirates has a much better flight in that sector.

Ripped off and broken seats in Business class. Seats stink and need to request the staff for additional bedsheets. Crew if very friendly though

Food was very good. Again tray could use a non-skid mat. I had a regular seat - comfortable - able to sleep undisturbed. Boarding was uneventful.

Boarding was quick and efficient. Ground staff were pleasant and courteous. Food was tasty, portions were good for me. Food containers kept slipping on the tray. Tray would look better with an anti-skid tray mat. I had the bulkhead seat which was very uncomfortable for couple of reasons. Aircraft is designed with no throughput to move across aisle to aisle. Passengers kept jumping over my legs to get from one side to the other to use the toilet. Secondly I had a mother and 9 month baby next to me. Mom had to hold baby for 12 hours in her lap as he did not fit into the bassinet. Half the baby was on my lap during the flight. Aircraft temperature was very cold - light attendant said it was the central cooling and nothing could be done about it. Movie selection was very poor old and outdated.

Crew member took too long time to take back leftover food plates from passenger seats. Food was nice.Easy excellent checking.Guy at checking counter was really kind and helpful.Made our checking very quickly. Leftover food should be taken back ASAP. Because in economy class passanger have narrow space . In the long journey like this, passanger have difficulties to sit with the plates.overall experience was good.

Crew did not cooperate… I just asked water twice for one crew member and she didn’t get anything.. and when I asked other crew member he gave me water and he was not respectful.. I kept Hindu non veg meal chicken .. when I get my turn chicken was not provided and then they gave me veg paneer and green peas curry which I don’t like..

Sits are very uncomfortable Don’t feel like to travel in Etihad. It was 1st time we traveled in Etihad now we decided we don’t want to travel in Etihad.

Sits are very uncomfortable and food quality should be improved. Alcohol you have to ask and wait for more then 1/2 hrs. Don’t feel like to travel in Etihad. It was 1st time we traveled in Etihad now we decided we don’t want to travel in Etihad.

Food and beverage service have rooms for improvement .there were no entertainment facilities available

Disappointed everytime. The app doesn't load the boarding passes. They have lots of agent that seem to be busy doing nothing with a long line waiting to get paper boarding passes. Food choices are poor. Entertainment is less than entertaining.

Horrible experience. Nothing to give to kids to keep them entertained.

Trouble keeps changing the time and I was booked different flight without knowing it was bad experience

This flight is always a cramped bus. The gate area was inadequate and announcements were hard to hear. The flight was delayed 45 minutes to an hour by a broken aircraft door, making our total delay from Vilnius 5 hours.

didn’t even get to go one of my returning flights cancelled and I wasn’t even in their system, vacation ruined thanks for nothing

1. Food provided was not per the selection. 2. Very old and outdated media infotainment and not much language oriented films 3. Better provide with a proper headset rather cheap in ear headphones.

Good crew and good flight but could have run on time They were waiting to collect people from connections

Very poor. Lost my luggage. Luggage never came in New Delhi from Munich and I created a lost luggage report with Lufthansa. Still waiting for luggage. Overall poor experience.

Good boarding experience, staff was very friendly. No entertainment was provided and vegan/veg food items did not taste good.

Flight delay wasn’t managed well. I was booked for the next flight for 2 days later!

Communication was terrible. Flight was delayed for 4-5 hours in DC (on the front end, and also after we boarded, we had to get off - some issue with fueling the old plane correctly). There was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Once we reach Delhi airspace, apparently there was weather that caused us not to land - we were actually near the ground, saw the run way, and lifted back up to the sky after being sooo close. Then we circled for about 30 minutes, and they decided to go to Jaipur to land until the weather cleared and to refuel. Again, once we landed in Jaipur (wrong city), there was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Then we heard that the crew was reaching their 24 hours. We sat on the place, on the tarmac for another 3 HOURS, with no food and not enough water for everyone on the flight. Then, they kicked us off the plane with no plan, in the wrong city. We went thru customs, got our bags (thank goodness), and had to ask a bunch of staff what was happening and what to do. Eventually, their soltuion was to bus people back to Delhi (like 6 hours we were told) but not everyone would fit on the bus, and unknown timing on when it would leave. At this point it was 9PM (we were scheduled to arrive in Delhi at 11AM...). My husband and I decided to risk it and take a cab that we had to pay ourselves (about $200 US dollars) to get to Delhi (about 5 hour drive). We both had terrible trips back to the US as well - almost missed connecting flight, forced to pay for carry-on luggage (a small back pack!) and duty-free goods by the Air India staff last minute. Just terrible experience all around. Never again with AI! The ONLY good thing was the air hostesses were kind and patient - example: they made sure people with food allergies got their correct.

It would have been perfect if there was onboard entertainment.

Food was unfit even for prisoners. larger front seats are terribly uncomfortable, which is ironic. Thorough need to upgrade aircraft on such a long route.

Food could be better they need a better caterer in DC flight from India always has better food

Everything! To start with, seats, food tray table, entertainment console all are broken! Imposing duty free baggage fees for $250 as a surprise penalty cannot be appreciated! Airlines should be responsible for transferring the checked baggages to the connecting flight. Having customer go through the transfer is painful considering the travel tiredness! No soft drinks served on flight is another crumble!

Old creaky plane, poor entertainment, USB port did not work. Food was ok.

Old fittings. Went business class. Staff not very considerate regards comfort.

Very old plane. Broken tray tables n seats. Entertainment system super slow to operate and very little content.

Service was good, crew response was prompt. The baked fish and Malay fish as well as the sauces with them were bland.

Screen are not working. Windows not clean. Staff is very good. Food is okay. Experience is good. I hope the up coming is more then betters for others airlines thank you.

Letters to the editor | letters: don’t plop a bears stadium on the lakefront.

Soldier Field against the Chicago skyline, Nov. 29, 2023. (E. Jason Wambsgans/Chicago Tribune)

What am I missing here?

If the Bears stadium were to be plopped down on our lakefront, it would be very unfortunate. Politics as usual in Chicago and Illinois.

— Lloyd Novak, Barrington

How would taxpayers benefit?

Taxpayer involvement in the proposed Chicago Bears stadium begs the question: How does the taxpayer benefit from the deal?

It’s clear that the Bears would come out the financial winner in this deal and taxpayers would be left with the cost of the financing of the Soldier Field work. If the public is paying in part for this deal, then it needs to be much more clear as to what our benefits will be.

Sure, it’s fine to have a great Chicago team — especially for team ownership — playing in a state-of-the-art stadium. But I think this proposal needs to lay out more clearly what public ownership gets the public aside from the bill for paying off the current stadium costs.

Grand promises have come and gone in the past. Perhaps taxpayers ought to get a piece of the revenue from this investment we’re paying for.

— David Kravitz, Chicago

Build 2 stadiums together

One of the most interesting ongoing stories around the area is the possible building of two new sports stadiums. I am 100% opposed to a lakefront stadium for anybody, including the Chicago Bears. That is a location for bike paths, rose gardens and oak trees. The buildings already there are a scar on Lake Michigan, a scar on Chicago’s front door. If I had a magic wand and billions of dollars, I would uproot McCormick Place, the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium and relocate them somewhere else. In 100 years, do you think our great-grandchildren will want old dilapidated structures on Chicago’s lakefront?

A nice wish, but I’m getting off point. Chicago’s mayor, the Illinois governor, Bears owner the McCaskey family and Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf are missing something. There is a chance to do something really unprecedented. Put a pair of stadiums next to each other — not one stadium to serve two sports, which has not worked in the past, but two stadiums complementing the other. It would be a magnificent achievement.

A football stadium where the south-facing goalpost area can open up a baseball stadium and where the north-facing left field can open up, marrying the two into a much larger facility. A facility to use for political events, music events and events not yet imagined. That would be something to even amaze Taylor Swift the next time she comes to town to boost Chicago’s economy.

Let me put something else into the mix. A permanent Chicago casino has not yet broken ground. Not that I approve of casinos, but Bally’s has not yet started building. Put together restaurants, bars, hotels, a casino, and two stadiums to make the economies of scale for the parking, street reconfigurations, highway access, and public transportation beneficial for all.

Get a very very good architect/engineer. Offer that firm a chance to use 60-plus acres of land along the South Branch of the Chicago River to build something amazing, something more amazing than anything else in North America.

Do the people in their offices in Guaranteed Rate Field, Halas Hall, City Hall and Springfield want to do a second-class job? An expensive second-class job? Or something great?

— William Scherer, Wood Dale

An artist's rendering shows a plan for an enclosed stadium with open space access to the lakefront was released by the Chicago Bears on April 24, 2024. (Manica)

Reasonable property taxes

The time has come for the Chicago Bears to finally bite the bullet and agree to pay a reasonable amount of property taxes to support the schools around its new stadium as the cost of moving to new and more lucrative surroundings in the suburbs.

For months, the Bears have been touting going somewhere else — Naperville and other suburbs — in an effort to make their financial arrangements more lucrative. Now they have convinced gullible Mayor Brandon Johnson that the city of Chicago would be well off to use lakefront land to build a new stadium and tear down the old one. They know well that the Friends of the Park will sue, that the City Council and the state legislature will rebel, and that the financial returns are just not there for the Bears. They know all this but continue to play the game.

The Bears should be careful. The targets may well get tired of the game and just refuse to play (and pay) any more. Then the Bears would be even worse off than they are now.

— Frank L. Schneider, Chicago

Not the gift it appears to be

Regarding the proposal for a “publicly owned” Chicago Bears stadium: It’s like the rich uncle buying his nephew a brand-new expensive car by taking care of the down payment, but leaving him stuck with the balance, interest payments and maintenance cost. This without first asking his nephew if he even wants a new car, since he is still paying off the one he has now.

— Daniel Morgenthaler, Chicago

Reconfigure Soldier Field

If the Chicago Bears are genuine in wanting to stay in town for a 77,000-seat domed stadium, they can, with a reconfigured Soldier Field. By retrofitting 7,000 mezzanine seats at each end zone, installing a lightweight geodesic-type roof structure, and adding a new heating and ventilating system, the existing 20-year-old building would meet all their stated requirements. The cost would be far less than $4.6 billion, and all the parking and site amenities would remain intact.

Discarding these existing usable facilities at the taxpayer’s expense is unwarranted and wasteful. The solution is in the hands of the creative genius that is Chicago.

— Thomas Hickey, Bridgman, Michigan

No tax money for stadium

I never watch sports on TV or listen to games on the radio. The first thing I do when I open my delivered newspaper (shout-out to my wonderful delivery person Celia Sotos-Reyes) is put the sports section in the recyclables.

I sure don’t want to spend a dime of my taxpayer money on a new stadium for the Bears or the Sox.

— Leslie Ladd, Chicago

Critical details for deal

The question of whether you are for or against using taxpayer funds for a new Bears stadium seems to be a premature question. As I see it, what can Mayor Brandon Johnson endorse as being great for the city? We don’t know what the terms of a lease or how revenues from stadium use for non-Bears games would be split. Isn’t this the most important item to know?

I read that the full cost of the requested $900 million in bonds is really $5 billion over 40 years. Haven’t we been misled too many times by our elected officials to even consider approval or disapproval without every single item of the deal being set in stone? The dollars are too great to leave unknowns for future determination.

The revenue the stadium generates through rent from the Bears and who gets ancillary revenue are about the most critical pieces of information to know if this stadium is beneficial to the taxpayers. So far, Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch and Illinois Senate President Don Harmon are asking the right questions. Hopefully, they don’t get swept up in a frenzy and commit any taxpayer funds unless and until every last detail is agreed upon and sees the light of day.

Remember: Kansas City voters rejected taxpayer funds to help a Super Bowl-winning team. I think our citizens would vote the same way.

— David Goss, Chicago

Let them pay for their own

As of 2023, the Chicago White Sox franchise was worth $2.05 billion. As of 2023, the Chicago Bears franchise was worth $6.3 billion.

I think they can both afford to build their own stadiums without the taxpayers’ money.

Prove me wrong. I’ll wait.

— Jonathen Limp, Streamwood

Use revenue to pay bonds

Regarding the plan for a new domed Bears stadium, I have a proposal to fund the stadium project.

Lawmakers should consider taking all revenue generated by the stadium events to pay off any bonds created to build the stadium and any other infrastructure improvements. This would not allow anyone to make any money until the bonds were paid back.

TV and concession revenue could still be collected by the Bears and city to help pay for event costs.

Seems like a reasonable option.

— John MacNamara, Orland Park

A venue for the unwanted

Regarding the letter about the “Museum for the Unwanted” (April 27): Great idea! That letter to the editor should be taken seriously by the leaders of our city. As so many artworks have become offensive to those whose sensibilities clash with the artistic creations of others, the need to find a proper venue for the now-unwanted art pieces should be addressed.

Instead of a lakefront stadium for the Bears, a Museum for the Unwanted would not only make it easier to decide what to do with these now-infamous pieces, but it also would surely become a touristic attraction that might bring significant revenues to Chicago.

I’m sure conservatives would gladly foot the bill for such an endeavor.

— Berta Graciano, Chicago

Use money to protect birds

Instead of thinking to spend billons of dollars on a new stadium for the Bears, why not subsidize the retrofitting of windows with bird protection while we still have some birds left?

A form of protection that isn’t mandatory is no protection at all. Either it should be made law or it should be paid for or subsidized by the city of Chicago.

— Michele Fiala, Chicago

NFL should issue a loan

I just wanted to say that I think it’s time for the NFL to step up and loan the Bears money for a new stadium.  The NFL certainly has the money and a vested interest in promoting the Bears and making their stadium more inviting to fans. Then sports teams can assume more responsibility to the cities they play in.

It seems like a win-win situation. The NFL can decide what interest it will charge and what to do if the Bears miss a payment.

— Lin Zielinski, Downers Grove

I have low expectations

Watching all the hype about the Bears draft, I can go only to the past few years of disappointment. We’ve seen this before. Put all kinds of pressure on a kid coming from college with no experience in the pros. The coaching staff doesn’t know what to do with talent. Then the team trades him away to watch him bloom under a good coach.

Don’t get your hopes up!

— James Cronin, Lombard

What is Cinco de Mayo? Holiday's meaning and origins tied to famous 1862 battle

So much more than just a day of drinking and partying, Cinco de Mayo is a day rich in history and culture for Mexico.

Celebrated annually on May 5, Cinco de Mayo recognizes Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire led by Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The holiday has since become perhaps more popular in the U.S. than in Mexico and is often celebrated by people of Mexican American heritage.

The holiday's name, Cinco de Mayo, translates to the fifth of May. This year, it is on Sunday, May 5.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Cities around the U.S. celebrate every year with parades, festivals, music and more, from Los Angeles to Chicago and everywhere in between. Restaurants and brands have gotten in on the action as well, offering food and drink deals throughout the weekend.

Here's what to know about the origins of Cinco de Mayo, and why it's celebrated in the U.S. today.

What does Cinco de Mayo celebrate? Origins tied to 1862 battle

Mexican Independence Day, or Día de la Independencia, came on Sept. 16, 1810, when the country broke free of Spanish rule.

Cinco de Mayo came more than 50 years later when French Emperor Napoleon III wanted to claim Mexico for himself.

The French sent troops to force Mexico's President Benito Juárez and the government out of Veracruz. On May 5, 1862, in a small town in east-central Mexico called  Puebla, 2,000 Mexican soldiers faced 6,000 French troops  at daybreak. Incredibly, Mexico claimed victory by the evening, and Juárez declared May 5 a national holiday.

The battle also played a role in the American Civil War. With the French defeated and leaving North America, the Confederacy wasn't able to use them as an ally to win the war.

So, why are so many Americans still confused?

"Everyone thinks that it's just party time, it's Corona time," Mario García, a Chicanx historian from the University of California at Santa Barbara, previously told USA TODAY.

"It's OK for people to go out and have a good time on a holiday like Cinco de Mayo − at least they have some sense that it's some kind of a Mexican holiday," García said. "But we should go beyond that. We should have Cinco de Mayo events that go beyond partying and drinking, where we call attention to what the history is."

Part of the confusion among many Americans about what Cinco de Mayo celebrates is likely because it's much catchier-sounding and easier for English speakers to say than the day of Mexico's independence (Diez y seis de Septiembre), García said last year.

The holiday serves as a reminder of the importance of Chicanx history and its people's contributions to the U.S.

"When you study the history of Chicanos and Latinos, of course, they've been history makers," García said previously. "They've been involved in all aspects of American history, not to mention the wars ... In World War II alone, almost half a million Latinos – mostly Mexican Americans – fought in the war. And they won a disproportionate number of congressional Medals of Honor."

Why is Cinco de Mayo more popular in the U.S. than Mexico?

While there are Cinco De Mayo celebrations throughout Mexico, notably in the city of Puebla, the event doesn't compare to the celebrations of Día de la Independencia, García said.

Meanwhile in the U.S., Cinco de Mayo has become an annual celebration of Mexican American culture.

The celebration of Cinco de Mayo began as a form of resistance to the effects of the Mexican-American War in the late 19th century. The holiday gained popularity during the  Chicano Movement  of the 1960s and 1970s.

"It becomes a Chicano holiday, in many ways, linked to the Chicano movement, because we discover Mexicans resisting a foreign invader," García said. "They link the struggle of the Chicano movement to Cinco de Mayo."

By the 1980s, companies began commercializing the holiday, especially beer companies and restaurants offering Cinco de Mayo specials and cocktails. García jokingly refers to the day as "Corona Day."

This Cinco de Mayo, García hopes everyone enjoys their Coronas, but perhaps with a little history lesson to wash it down.

Air Jordan 1 Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

  • Air Jordan 1 2022 Chicago (aka "Lost & Found") drops on November 19, 2022

You already know what the Air Jordan 1 is all about. It’s a staple of sneaker culture.

The Air Jordan 1, however, wasn’t destined to be an all-time classic.

When it first debuted in 1985, there weren’t grand expectations. Instead, there were critics loudly chirping about Nike’s decision to give Michael Jordan a large sneaker deal before he played a single game and the rookie’s choice to sign with a company that, up to that point, was best known for running shoes.

Jordan quickly flipped the narrative on the court by winning Rookie of the Year, averaging 28.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG, and 5.9 APG in 1985 while donning Air Jordan 1s. MJ’s meteoric rise propelled the Air Jordan 1, resulting in nationwide demand and making the sneakers a must-have for hoop heads.

Introducing the Air Jordan 1 'Chicago'

The AJ1 "Chicago" was inspired by the high top Air Jordan 1 original colorway, first released in 1985. The shoe harkens back to a time when shoe boxes were often lost in inventory stockrooms, only to be found again years later.

Air Jordan 1 2022 "Lost and Found" Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

Before the advent of sophisticated inventory systems, products were typically tracked with pen and paper. Human error was inevitable and frequently resulted in shoe boxes with mismatched lids.

The AJ1 Chicago is a throwback to this era, drawing inspiration from what an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 would look like if found decades later in a dusty stock room.

According to the Jordan design team, the goal of this shoe was to create a “time travel moment,” especially for a new generation of consumers. The process of buying a shoe today is very different from what it was like in the 80s. This sneaker attempts to capture that lost and found feeling, giving consumers a taste of what a box-fresh, vintage AJ1 would have looked like back in the day.

Lost & Found: A Unique Design

Air Jordan 1 2022 "Lost and Found" Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

The Jordan Brand team responsible for developing the AJ1 Chicago obsessed every detail of the shoe’s design to bring this nostalgic story to life. Jordan designers studied multiple pairs of original AJ1s in varying states of distress to capture the nuances of the shoe’s look, described as having “light to no wear but with materials that sat for years in a box and didn’t withstand the test of time.”

The Inspiration

Ultimately, the team focused on several key design elements of the Chicago to drive forward the AJ1’s history. The image below shows the updated 2022 Chicago (top) next to an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 (bottom) to highlight the sneaker's inspiration.

A Closer Look

The 2022 Chicago colorway comes with a range of key design features influenced by the OG AJ1.

Bigger Swoosh

Air Jordan 1 2022 "Lost and Found" Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

Ankle Collars

One of the most common signs of age on an original pair of AJ1s was a cracked and faded ankle collar. The black leather material wrapped around the ankle collars had a tendency to dry out and crack over a period of time, and often would begin to flake off with wear and handling.

The ankle collars on the new Chicago mimic this weathered appearance and give a nod to collectors who understand the amount of care necessary when handling a pair of 1985 originals.

Air Jordan 1 2022 "Lost and Found" Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

Similar to the ankle collars, the rubber cupsole of an original AJ1 would age over time, turning into a light yellow hue. The Chicago pays homage to this look.

According to the Jordan Brand Design team, when shoes are left in a box for years and not properly maintained, they’re going to crack, yellow and pigment. The goal with the AJ1 Chicago was to hint at this subtle aging look, while adding tactility to the shoe’s sole.

Air Jordan 1 2022 "Lost and Found" Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

Aged Leather

Leather is a natural material that requires ongoing maintenance. With years of neglect in a stockroom leather starts to dry out and leave visible signs of aging. The Chicago offers hints of dryness in the leather, most noticeably in the toe area and side panels. But the effect is merely aesthetic.

Jordan Brand designers took note of the condition in the leather from several older pairs of AJ1s. Observing how some of the oils in the leather came to the surface and created different visible effects, they recreated a rich look using premium materials that will last longer for today’s consumers.

Air Jordan 1 2022 "Lost and Found" Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

OG Box & Lid

In a nod to the “lost and found” nature of the colorway, the updated Chicago comes with a mismatched box lid that speaks to the shoes being misplaced in back rooms and basements.

Designers added extra details both inside and outside the box that serve as a shout out to shoe promotions created once upon a time. According to the Jordan design team, every detail should be recognizable to those who grew up back in those days, while giving new sneakerheads a chance to experience what it was like.

One such example is the inclusion with every pair of a vintage receipt meant to replicate actual receipts that found their way into the hands of collectors from deadstock shoeboxes. The receipt calls up images of how sneakers used to be acquired in analog fashion before the internet age.

Air Jordan 1 2022 "Lost and Found" Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

Retelling the Story

As a result of the many unique design choices, not every pair of updated AJ1s will look exactly the same. The subtle differences in each sneaker reinforce the throwback theme of this colorway.

Air Jordan 1 2022 "Lost and Found" Chicago: The Inspiration Behind the Design

Jordan designers took an approach that gave the 2022 Air Jordan 1 Chicago “an edge, a narrative and a connection.” They wanted a look and feel that came with a history tied back to something many consumers may not even be aware of. Ultimately, whether old school or new generation, Jordan Brand wants every consumer to see beauty in the story behind the shoe.

The sneaker dropped on November 19, 2022. The Chicago will be available in full family sizing.

The AJ1 Chicago retails for $180 (USD) for adults. Prices will vary by country.

The shoe will be available in full family sizing at the following price points:

  • Adult: $180
  • GS (Grade School): $140
  • PS (Preschool): $85
  • TD (Toddler): $70
  • Crib (Infant): $50

You can find the shoe on SNKRS.com and the SNKRS app , as well as in Jordan Brand stores and retailers globally.

Stay up to date by clicking "Notify Me" on SNKRS .

Like all Jordans, the Air Jordan 1 Chicago (aka “Lost and Found”) was originally designed as a basketball shoe. It’s inspired by the 1985 Air Jordan 1, so it features old school technology and cushioning.
