CHINCOTEAGUE PONY SWIM ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

The Chincoteague Pony Swim at the end of July is a unique experience. Reserve your seats on the boat or kayak tour now. You can view it on Wednesday or Friday. The ponies  swim over from Assateague on Wednesday, then after the auction they swim back on Friday. You can see the pony swim good on the boat or kayak tour. Assateague Explorer has escorted visitors like you to see the pony swim since 2001. Keep in mind that anytime from April thru October you can go on the daily boat or kayak tour and it is a brilliant way to see the legendary wild ponies in their natural environment. The wild ponies of Assateague are remarkable and you will appreciate seeing them in this special part of the world. Visiting this area on the daily tour will give you an appreciation of the ponies and the natural diversity of their environment. If you want to see the actual Pony Swim, reserve it now. This is on some people’s bucket list. Seats are limited. Be sure to do the daily boat or kayak tour while you visit, so you can see the beautiful area, dolphins and wildlife while you make the most of your vacation here at Chincoteague and Assateague.

The annual Chincoteague Pony Swim event is held once a year. Watch your calendar, the event is held on the last consecutive Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in July. This historic event started back in 1925 as a fundraiser for the volunteer fire department. Back in the early 1900’s Chincoteague was isolated from the mainland with no bridges, the island residents were in need of fire trucks so they decided to swim the ponies over from nearby Assateague and have an auction. Each year, the ponies on Assateague have about 75 new foals born on the island. The population of ponies can reach up to 300 horses on the island at times. The pony penning event keeps the pony population under control with an auction the following day after the swim. The pony auction is held at the Chincoteague Fireman’s Carnival following the day of the swim. You can watch the Pony Swim on Wednesday and or watch the return Pony Swim on Friday as the ponies swim back to Assateague.

The boat or kayak tour makes the most sense if you want to see the pony swim. You could try to watch it on land with an estimated 40,000 people, but you might be far away or standing in the marsh with a mass of spectaculars possibly in front of you. Being out on the water offers you the best opportunity and a pleasant experience. This is the only way Captain Mark of Assateague Explorer has ever seen it. He grew up on the island so he knows. People return from previous attempts at trying it on land and say that’s why this year they are going on the boat or kayak tour. Sometimes while waiting for the ponies to swim you can witness dolphins or bald eagles. The view of the lighthouse is great too, so you get to experience nature and scenery while at the pony swim. The time the horses swim is determined by the tides, they swim at either high or low tide. That is called slack tide and when the current stops running. The Pony Swim is always during the morning. The official time is announced the day before at the firemen’s carnival, but we know in advance. Reserve now and you will be notified of the time via email or phone. You are going to have a great vacation here.

Who was Bill Melvin, "Barnacle Bill"

January 19, 1940- January 21, 2024 (Age 83)

Barnacle Bill was born and raised on Chincoteague Island.  He & his family were famous around town for owning and operating "Barnacle Bill's Bait & Tackle Shop" on Main Street.

Bill was known by all the locals as one of the  best story-tellers there is around- he was comical and always kept a smile on your face.  He was extremely knowledgeable in local history, ponies, wildlife, and anything to do with the water.

chincoteague pony swim boat tour

Taking a boat tour with Barnacle Bill was a special experience because unlike the rest, he captivated your attention and imagination.  The stories he told included some things from his past experiences.  His experience as a Saltwater Cowboy, as a waterman, and of growing up on this beautiful island of Chincoteague that he called home.

Bill also lived in the time of the infamous Flood of '62 and during the time of the true story, "Misty of Chincoteague".

WHAT GUESTS SAY...

" Of all the boat tours to pick from, we're so glad we went with Barnacle Bill!  While the other tour boats quickly passed us by, Bill was busy tracking down dolphins he had spotted... if you want a tour of the area by a born and raised Chincoteague  resident who really knows his stuff, then you will be very pleased with Barnacle Bill!"

Auction of Foals - 8am at Carnival grounds.

Trolley Service - 8am - 1pm  FREE

The annual pony auction raises funds for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and for the veterinary care of the ponies. The auction also serves to help control the pony population on Assateague Island. Foals will be auctioned at 8am on the Carnival grounds, and winners will receive certificates of purchase from the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

Select ponies, designated as "buy backs," will also be auctioned, but returned to the herd to help maintain the population. Each winner of a "buy back" pony gets to name their adopted pony. The "buy back" auctions are typically the most popular at this event, so if you're interested in naming a Chincoteague pony be ready to bid!

A few tips to remember:

1. Be there early if you wish to bid on a pony. The crowds are huge and you will want a space as close to the front as possible.

2. Wear a sun hat and sunscreen. Bring plenty to drink. A pencil and paper are always useful. A camera is nice. A folding chair is a great idea as bleachers will not be available due to insurance restrictions.

3. You do not have to register for the in-person auction. If you raise your hand during the auctioneer's chant, you ARE MAKING A BID. New in 2022, online bidding is also available during the live auction and registration is required. More information is available on our Auction page.

For an idea of how much ponies go for in auction, visit our Pony Auction page .

PLEASE NOTE: Pets are not permitted in Memorial Park or the Carnival Grounds.

Pony Swim Back - Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company lead South Herd ponies from Carnival Grounds at TBD and reverse the Pony Parade Route with an anticipated swim time of TBD. The ponies will not rest at the marsh but will swim immediately. North herd ponies are trailered back to their grazing area Thursday after the auction. (typically 2 hours later than Pony Swim time)

Trolley Service - 8am - 1pm FREE

Trolley Service  - 5pm - 11pm in front of Carnival Grounds ($0.50 per ride)

On Friday morning, the adult ponies make their swim back to Assateague Island where they will live until it's time for the Pony Swim next year!

Trolley Service  - 5pm - 11pm in front of Carnival Grounds

Our amazing Pony Penning week concludes with the Carnival, from 7pm - 11pm.

Wildlife Tour of Assateague and Chincoteague Islands

This scenic tour aboard a six-passenger pontoon boat begins by navigating around the southern end of Chincoteague Island and heading to the backside of Assateague Island. We seek out and observe the wild ponies in their native habitat. Enjoy listening to local history and information on Assateague and Chincoteague Island as you take in the sights!

Wild Ponies have inhabited Assateague Island for hundreds of years. We know the best spots on the Assateague coastline for pony viewing, and we take you there for a unique experience. Wildlife sightings along the way may include bald eagles, shorebirds, and dolphins.

In recent years, wildlife management officials have built miles of fencing along the roadways on Assateague to keep the ponies off the roadway and protect them from getting hit by vehicles. Numerous pony bands (families) roam extensive areas of Assateague Island that cannot be seen from the roads on Assateague.

As we make every effort to get up close with the wild ponies, you also encounter many different shore birds, bald eagles, and ospreys. Learn some local legends and lore about the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague. See aquaculture farms and learn how they benefit our ecosystem. There is so much nature and beauty to be seen, and we share it all with you on this tour.
