2024 Mediterranean Study Cruise

Following Jesus’ instructions to be His witnesses “to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8), the Apostles carried the message of the gospel into the regions of Asia Minor and Greece. Christians today belong to the legacy of God’s work in these lands, as those first disciples passed down the faith to future generations.

Set sail to the “cradle of Christianity” on our 2024 Mediterranean Study Cruise. Over eleven days, you and your fellow travelers will embark on a journey to key locations from the New Testament and early church history. You can explore the expansive Roman ruins of Ephesus, climb Mars Hill where Paul preached, and visit Istanbul, the transcontinental city that became the center of Christianity in the fourth century. All along the way, you’ll receive biblical teaching to bring home the significance of each site. Join Stephen Nichols and Derek Thomas on this unforgettable study cruise.

Corinth, greece.

OPTIONAL PRE-CRUISE TOUR:  CORINTH (pricing in April 2024):

Corinth is well known from the two letters that the Apostle Paul wrote to Christians in this city. The book of Acts also records Paul’s visit and ministry in this city during his second missionary journey. As you come to the site of ancient Corinth, you’ll get to explore the ruins of one of the largest and most important cities in the ancient Greco-Roman world. Extended excavations have brought to light the Roman forum, temples, fountains, porticoes, baths, and monuments.

OPTIONAL PRE-CRUISE TOUR: ATHENS  (pricing in April 2024):

Long considered the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, Athens and Corinth both were important destinations for the Apostle Paul. Experience this cultural hub where the gospel powerfully broke into the pagan world. You will take a scenic drive through Athens on a journey to the legendary Acropolis. Walking a winding pathway to the top of Mars Hill, you’ll come to the place where Paul preached to the Athenians in Acts 17. You will also explore the ancient agora, a gathering place where figures like Plato, Socrates, and Demosthenes debated.

Santorini, greece.

On the island of Santorini, you’ll find a classic Greek seascape—whitewashed houses accented by sea-blue roofs. This is a treasure trove for both professional and amateur archeology buffs, with sites including tombs that date back to the ninth century as well as the sanctuary of Apollo. In one sense, Santorini could be considered an explosive place: its terraced homes and windmills lie on a caldera, an enormous basin formed by an erupting volcano.

Istanbul, turkey.

Spend an enriching time in the exotic city of Istanbul. Formerly known as Constantinople after the Roman emperor Constantine, this city became the center of Christianity in 330 AD. Ancient church leaders convened here in 381 for the second ecumenical council, where the Nicene Creed was revised and expanded into the form we know today. Later, this city also housed the largest church of the ancient world, Hagia Sophia, or the church of Holy Wisdom, dedicated by Emperor Justinian in 536 AD.

Ephesus, turkey.

Once the capital of the Roman province of Asia Minor, this coastal town is now an archeologist’s dream. Although excavations have been underway for 150 years, only about 20 percent of the city has been uncovered so far. This former banking and trading center is rich with historic sites, such as the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You will also see the great theater described in Acts 19, where a riot erupted against the Christians for their rejection of idolatry.

rhodes, greece.

Rhodes is considered by some to be the friendliest city in the Mediterranean. This sunny retreat is also home to many historic sites, such as the ruins of the Temple of Venus and the medieval Street of Knights. The varied landscape with beaches, woodlands, and ancient ruins also make this one of the most alluring locations in the Greek archipelago. Enter the gateways of Rhodes and step back to a time when the Knights Hospitaller built a medieval Christian stronghold here. You can spend the day amid the chronicles of Greek history, immersing yourself in the archaeological site of Lindos and climbing to the ruins of its ancient Acropolis for sweeping views of the village and the blue seas beyond.

About Ligonier Tours

christian cruises summer 2024

One of the best ways you can learn about a person or even an event is being there—to be on site. We can certainly learn from reading and studying. We can even create the scene in our mind’s eye. But nothing brings a person or an event to life like being there. Ligonier Tours takes you to the places where significant events occurred, events that have shaped history. You can literally walk in the footsteps of our heroes of the past, of Luther, of Calvin, of Jonathan Edwards. You will meet these figures in ways you have never met them before.

Ligonier’s Teaching Fellows and other ministry leaders serve as your guides as you explore these important sites. On these tours, you’ll have time with these trusted teachers over a meal or at the sites along the journey. You will also have rich times of fellowship with your fellow travelers, meeting kindred spirits and making friendships.

Ligonier Tours brings the past to life, they serve to encourage us as disciples in our own day, and they offer us reminders that we are not alone, but that we are on our pilgrim journey together.

What is a Christian Fellowship Package?

Have you been on a vacation that was not a blessing because you did not travel with other Christians? This list of Christian Packages is simply a means for you to enjoy the friendship, Bible study, and encouragement that you gain when traveling with people of like mind and faith. Many group leaders offer study tours and private group packages as well.

Reserve your tour at least 6 months in advance for an Early Booking Discount

Groups and parties of 6 or more click here for special rates, scheduled tours, christian tours: frequently asked questions.

Are there opportunities for spiritual enrichment and worship during the tours?

Yes, there will be opportunities for spiritual enrichment and worship during our Christian tours. You’ll get to visit and learn about sites that played a key role in the stories of the Bible and Christian history. These experiences also give you a chance to learn more about the world and the different cultures that have shaped it.

What type of accommodations can I expect during the tours?

Most of the tours we offer are all-inclusive, which means airfare, lodging, and most meals are included in the price of your tour. This includes everything from Ireland tours to cruises and tours of Alaska. You can find individual itineraries and tour details for each of our tour packages on our website, and you can contact us if you have any questions.

What safety measures are in place for travelers?

We can’t guarantee your safety, but we do take traveler safety seriously. Safety is a top priority with all of our Christian travel groups. We work with destination management companies who prioritize/commit to safety, and we’ve built strong relationships that allow us to provide an incredible experience whether you book one of our Europe or U.S. tours .

Are meals provided during the tours? Are dietary restrictions accommodated?

We provide meals and other accommodations during most of our tours, but you should check the details on our website before booking your tour. Hotels may also provide various options that can accommodate different types of diets, allergies, and other restrictions.

Can I customize my tour itinerary to include specific religious sites or activities?

We offer several Christian tours, so you can choose the tour that piques your interest. Some of our tours — including Italy and Greece tours and cruises —include optional activities and visits to religious sites. You can decide which sites you want to visit and spend your time relaxing on the shore or cruise ship when you’re not busy sightseeing. We do offer pre-nights or post-nights before and after our tours for those that want to take some time to rest, relax or get caught up on jet lag.

What is the group size for these tours?

Group sizes are typically between 25 and 35 people, although group sizes can vary. Some tour groups may be as large as 40–45 people, but it depends on the tour and the group leader. We try to maintain reasonably sized tour groups for our Christian vacations.

How far in advance should I book my Christian tour?

The sooner you book, the better. Our tour groups can fill up fast, but we do our best to give everyone a chance to visit other countries and learn about early Christian history throughout the world. Many of our tours offer an early reservation discount if you sign up for a tour 6+ months in advance. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to have a valid passport — and visa if required — before departing.

Do I need travel insurance for these Christian tours? Is it included in the package?

We strongly recommend purchasing a travel insurance plan — whether you’re booking one of our Christian Alaska cruises or a trip to Europe. Travel insurance charges can be added to your final bill, but they’re not included in your tour package. We can provide a total approximate cost for travel insurance when you book your tour.

Are there any extra fees or expenses not included in the tour package?

We do our best to offer tour pricing that includes as much as possible. You’ll need to pay a $300 (USD) deposit per person to book one of our Christian tours, $100 of which is non-refundable at time of deposit. However, most of our Christian travel packages include lodging, food, and all the other accommodations you’ll need during your trip. From Costa Rica tours to Alaska cruises, we offer a luxurious and enriching experience.

What is the cancellation policy for these tours?

You must notify Pilgrim Tours of your cancellation 91+ days before your departure date for a refund of your deposit minus service fees. Canceling on shorter notice will result in a smaller refund, and you won’t receive any refund if you notify us of your cancellation 7 days or fewer before your departure.

Can I extend my stay at any of the destinations beyond the tour dates?

Our Christian tours follow a specific itinerary, so you’ll need to stick with the tour group throughout the tour. During some of our tours, we’ll even travel to different countries and meet new tour guides throughout the trip. Travelers do have the option to book extra hotel nights either before the tour or after the tour.

Do you provide transportation between destinations?

We provide transportation for all of our Christian tours, from US to Germany tours . While transportation costs are included in the price of your tour, tips to guides and drivers aren’t covered.

What should I pack for the tour? Are there any specific clothing or items recommended?

You should pack appropriate clothing for the destination you’re visiting. Consider the culture you’re immersing yourself in and dress modestly according to cultural norms. You should also pack a phone charger, personal care products, medicine, and anything else you typically bring on a vacation.

2023-09 The Walrus Cruise logo (with shadow).png

Your adventure starts here

2022SU Camellia crew smiling COMPRESSED.jpg

Get away from it all for a week, develop your sailing skills in stunning surroundings, relish the challenge of living on board a yacht... and find out what being a Christian is all about.

The Walrus Cruise is a charity staffed entirely by volunteers, led by the Commodore. We offer adventurous training sailing holidays for teenagers & further development for students.

Indeed, we have a centenary of experience of sailing on the Norfolk Broads, having been making the very most of these idyllic inland waterways since way back in 1924.

2022SU Isaac and Thomas COMPRESSED.jpg

Who?

Our  cruises are available for 13 - 18 year olds from across the UK (possibly 12+ but please ask before booking). We also encourage those who are over  18 and who have been on the cruise before to continue with us as Leaders.

The Walrus Cruise is a RYA Training Centre and each one-week cruise consists of a fleet of yachts, usually supported by a motor cruiser or two. It's a perfect opportunity to develop leadership skills, learn more about the Christian faith and make lifelong friends. Having chosen our destination to make the most of wind and tide, each yacht then has the freedom to decide whether to race against other boats, or to relax and enjoy a leisurely sail whilst feasting on the sights along the riverbanks (and more than a few biscuits!)

Starting from Martham Boats , the fleet cruises (sails) around the idyllic Norfolk Broads in the area bounded by Barton to the North, Horsey on the East coast, Acle to the South and Wroxham in the West. The Broads consist of shallow lakes (broads) and 125 miles of lock-free waterways and is Britain's largest nationally protected wetland. A truly unique area, rich in rare habitats, a wealth of unusual architecture and stunning scenery. A great place to “get away from it all!”

When? We run two cruises for teenagers every year, one in the Easter period and the other in the Summer. Check out our Upcoming Events for details.

Centenary celebration

  • Do I need to know how to sail? Not at all! Our highly experienced Leadership Team welcome beginners and will show you the ropes throughout the week. Just in case you manage to fall in though, we do require that crew members are able to swim 50 metres. The Walrus Cruise is a RYA Recognised Training Centre and there is the option for you to undertake Level 1 for beginners if you wish. Then, in your next cruises, you might choose to work your way through Levels 2, 3 and up to Seamanship in the keelboats we sail.
  • What do I need to bring? Mostly a determination to have great fun! The Walrus Cruise and the boatyards provide all necessary safety equipment such as life jackets and a list of things to bring will be included in the joining instructions. You don't need any special kit but good gloves for handling ropes and decent waterproofs are really helpful!
  • Where will I be sleeping? You will be sleeping in a berth (bed) on board one of our boats. Each yacht sleeps 3 - 4 crew members (occasionally 5) and at least one Team Leader. For more information on the types of boats we use, see the boatyard’s website.
  • What will I eat? Whatever you can cook! You and your fellow crew members will take it in turns to provide for each other using the facilities on board your yacht… but don’t worry, all the ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions are provided. We often hold at least one BBQ on shore, especially in the summer. You will be asked if you have any allergies or specific food requirements in the joining information. Biscuits, oh yes, don't forget the biscuits to keep you going as you are sail along (and, if you are really, really, really good, you might even be offered a slice of the Commodore's flapjack!)
  • Do I have to be a Christian to go? No. All are welcome whether you have a strong faith, some faith or none at all.... just as long as you are happy to take full part in all the activities including Bible studies/discussions. The aim of these discussions is to give you a chance to talk about things that concern you and to help you grow.
  • Are my valuables kept safe? Unfortunately, this is not possible in the confines of a boat on the water and the Walrus Cruise cannot take responsibility for personal possessions. Therefore, we would strongly recommend that expensive phones or other valuables are left at home. We do provide a sealed plastic box for phones but cannot utterly guarantee their safety and its use must be at your own risk.
  • I want to go but can’t afford the cost. Are discounts available? We offer a £100 reduction off your first cruise and a further £50 off for each friend you recommend who joins us for their first cruise. Due the generosity of our charity's supporters, the Walrus Cruise is able to provide bursaries for those who may not be able to afford the cost. Please feel free to contact us if this is something you'd like to discuss.
  • Is pocket money required? Everything is included in the cost of each cruise except travel to/from the boatyard, merch and RYA training booklets. We encounter a few gift shops along the way and ice creams are popular in sunshine… so we would suggest bringing between £15 - £30.
  • What qualifications do the Leaders have? The Walrus Cruise is inspected annually by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) because it is a Recognised Training Centre, and each yacht is skippered by a Leader with a RYA sailing certificate. The Commodore has a RYA Instructor’s certificate, is a qualified First Aider and has over 40 years of sailing experience (including having raced across the Atlantic). We are also a founder member of the Standing Conference of Christian Sailing Cruises which shares experience and best practice. The usual Leader to Crew ratio on each cruise is an amazing 1:2 (maximum 1:5 on a yacht) and all Leaders have had an enhanced DBS check. So rest assured that you will be in safe hands.
  • What does the Walrus Cruise being a RYA Training Centre mean? The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the preeminent worldwide organisation for sailing enthusiasts and more information can be found via their website: www.rya.org The Walrus Cruise is a RYA Recognised Training Centre on the Norfolk Broads and is inspected every year by them to ensure the quality of our instruction. Therefore, on our week long Cruises we can offer you the additional opportunity to gain these RYA Keelboat Certificates: Level 1 (Start Sailing) Level 2 (Basic Skills) Level 3 (Better Sailing) Seamanship Our usual Leader to Crew ratio is an amazing 1:2 (maximum 1:5) and all the professional training is included in the cost of the Cruise. If you wish have a go at achieving a certificate, you just need to purchase a RYA logbook from us (£6 in 2022), or to bring your own if you have already started the scheme.
  • Is the Walrus Cruise insured? The Walrus Cruise has full Public Liability insurance which is renewed each year. However, this does NOT cover your personal possessions which may, instead, be covered by your home insurance policy. Please check and consider whether you would like to take out holiday insurance from your broker.
  • What's your policy on .... ? All of our current policies and Statement of Faith can be found here. If you're interested or concerned about something then please do let us know.
  • What are the Terms and Conditions? You can find all of our Terms and Conditions here
  • I like what you do... how can I support you in that? The Walrus Cruise would greatly value your support in whatever way you are able. As a Christian charity, we need as many people praying for us as possible and there are lots of other ways to support us as well, whether recruiting young people on one of the Cruises, spreading the word in your church, or donating funds etc. Please click here to download a PDF explaining how you can help.

We love to hear from those who have been involved with the Walrus Cruise and we will be celebrating our Centenary in 2024 !

Do get in touch to share your memories and find out how things have progressed since your last experience!

WEATHER ALERT

A river flood warning in effect for Columbia County

Jacksonville travel agent gives advice on booking cruises during hurricane season.

Ashley Harding , Reporter/Weekend Anchor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With hurricane season going on, you may be wondering, is it really a good idea to book a cruise in that time frame? Is it going to be canceled?

RELATED: Hyperactive hurricane season expected by top forecast group

Recommended Videos

Luckily, as we know, hurricanes are easy to track, so your chances of your cruise being impacted by a storm during hurricane season are slim. Changes to your itinerary may be possible, so you need to be flexible and have a plan in place.

Family vacations -- and even cruises may be on your agenda – as school is about to let out. But with hurricane season set to last through the summer, safety is always key.

Scott Lara, a travel agent, talked about safety on cruise ships during hurricane season.

“A lot of people are concerned about traveling during hurricane season because of winds and rough weather, but the good news is the cruise lines spend billions of dollars to make sure the ship, the crew, and the passengers stay safe,” Lara said.

Lara said state-of-the-art technology is in place to stay ahead of the storm and cruises are able to avoid problem weather.

“Corporate like in Miami will let cruise lines know, ‘hey there’s something in the area, turn left, turn right’ to keep passengers safe,” Lara said.

He also said one thing you should not overlook is travel insurance. When selecting a policy, make sure there’s coverage for weather-related disruptions. But also, don’t forget to read the fine print.

“There’s lots of things that can be involved. Like, what if you lose your bags, what if you miss a flight...but more importantly, what if you fall and hurt your arm or your leg? You want to be reimbursed for any kind of injuries you may have. So travel insurance is important, I advise everyone I know to purchase it,” Lara said.

Even though a ship may be outsailing a storm, that doesn’t mean you won’t run into some rougher than usual conditions. Lara says it’s a good idea to pack your sea-sickness meds before you board.

“Those products on the ship are going to be very expensive,” Lara said. “So, if it’s Dramamine or the patch behind the ear, maybe some Pepto Bismol just in case you get a little nauseous. But the technology on these ships, especially the large ones, like Icon of the Seas, Scarlet Lady, Oasis of the Seas, they have stabilizers to prevent the ship from going back and forth and up and down.”

As for having the best cruise time, Lara recommended-- contrary to popular belief-- try not to book your cruise at the last minute. Chances are, if you do that, all the best cabins will be booked up. And as always, just be aware of what’s happening with hurricane season and have a plan.

Maine Maritime Academy

A college of engineering, management, science, and transportation, 2024 summer training cruise, cruise 2024 has started, bravo company report: isaac renshaw-sirimoglu, 4/c met.

Today, May 5th at 0845, Bravo Company began the boarding process for Cruise 2024. LCDR Gualtieri and LT Willette ensured every cadet was present in the proper cruise khaki uniform along with their paperwork, passports, TWIC cards on hand. 2/C and 1/C MIDN were also checked for their Merchant Mariner Credentials. Following this CMDR Christian and Chief Warrant Officer Kowalski conducted bag searches for unapproved items. All Bravo Company Midshipmen had regulation haircuts and were allowed to board. After MIDN finished loading their own bags, additional emergency gear was issued to all faculty and cadets. Emergency gear consisted of life jackets and immersion suits. Cadets were then given time to square away their berthing spaces or staterooms. At 1200 lunch was served to all staff and faculty before afternoon Muster at 1300 on the 03 Reception Deck. At 1345 cadets were given liberty until 2000 to go support the Mariner’s Men’s Lacrosse Team in their game against the SUNY Poly. Tomorrow the Ship’s crew will conduct emergency drills to practice accountability and proper procedures.

Charlie Company Report: Mia Plaskiewicz, 4/C MTO

Charlie Company arrived at 0930 to board the ship. After getting our TWICs and passports checked, Charlie Company utilized a lot of teamwork to get all our luggage on the ship. The male midshipmen went to the berthings to unpack, as the females went to their assigned staterooms. From there, lots of unpacking occurred and racks were made. PFDs and immersion suits were issued to everyone which they will bring to fire and emergency drills and abandon ship drills. At 1300 accountability and passing of word occurred on the 03 deck (one of the higher up decks). We were introduced to a lot of the staff who will be on cruise and then we were granted liberty. Many used liberty to go get snacks for the long trip and prepare for the following days.

Delta Company Report: Harington Sauer, 4/C

Today Delta Company was the last of the four companies to board the Training Ship State of Maine . I arrived to find a long line of other 4/C students with their parents already forming a long line spaced between their, oftentimes, too much baggage. Spirits were high for the most part as we conversed waiting to check in, get our room assignments, and have our luggage brief. One interesting piece of luggage I saw being brought onboard was a student with what looked to be a full or queen-size memory foam mattress topper strapped to his sea bag. I assume that student is in for a shock when he realizes the mattresses are actually smaller than a twin.

At 1300 we were instructed to meet on the 03 deck to be briefed by Captain MacArthur and Commandant Winter. They went over basic expectations for the cruise as far as safety and respecting each other, and then had the staff who were onboard come and briefly introduce themselves to us so we could put faces to names. We received liberty to go ashore from the ship nearly an hour later, and the Commandant suggested we go support the MMA Lacrosse team that was playing. A good amount of students turned out to that, but an equal amount turned out to T&C Grocery across the street to buy all sorts of junk food and energy drinks to stock their rooms with. Most of the rest of the evening is being spent by the students unpacking and getting settled into their state rooms or berthings as tomorrow we officially kick off day 1 of the training cruise at 0710.

Join this unforgettable Christian cruise to Canada & New England with Alistair Begg

A note from alistair begg.

Dear Friends,

If you have yet to plan your 2024 vacation, I hope you’ll join me on a scenic tour along the colorful New England and eastern Canadian coastlines from September 21 – 28, 2024.

We’ll study our sermon topic, Aliens and Strangers: Studies in 1 Peter , aboard the Zuiderdam while enjoying the beautiful fall foliage. On our seven-day voyage departing out of Boston, you can visit a historic lighthouse in Halifax, Nova Scotia, take in the spectacular ocean views from Rockland, Maine and dine on fresh seafood on Prince Edward Island.

This trip promises to be a terrific time of worship and fellowship as we immerse ourselves in God’s remarkable creation. Our route through the rich blue waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence will take us through one of the deepest estuaries in the world and home to a variety of sea life.

Onboard, we’ll benefit from the hospitality of our friendly Holland America crew and enjoy the ship's comforts. Most memorable, however, will be our time making new friends, enjoying Christian fellowship and growing in our relationship with the Lord Jesus.

I hope you’ll come along!

We know how nice it is to have the convenience of home when traveling on a cruise. Bringing your electronics and hair appliances can enhance your overall travel experience. Every cruise ship has plugs that accept U.S. and Continental European devices, and you do not need to bring plug adaptors. Here are some things to know about your electronics before you pack them:

Phones, MP3 Players, Laptops, Cameras & Video Cameras

Most small digital devices have chargers that will fit in the plugs on a cruise ship. One thing to be mindful of is the limited plugs in each cabin; you may want to bring a multi-plug extension cord.

Blow Dryers, Curling Irons & Straighteners

Each stateroom has a hair dryer for your personal convenience. If you prefer your hair appliances, you may want to consider purchasing or borrowing compact and travel-friendly appliances.

For more information, please call one of our Reservation Coordinators at 800 247 1899 , Monday through Friday between 8:30am-5:00pm, Pacific Time.

The scenic beauty of northern Atlantic coast can be enjoyed from onboard the ship and to make the most of your cruise vacation, you can also get out into the local ports. Shore excursions offer something for everyone. Choose from city tours, culinary explorations, shopping outings, cultural activities and more.

Because shore excursions have limited capacity and fill up quickly, we recommend you book early for the best selection on your cruise. Once you’ve booked your Inspiration cruise, check out the customized cruise line excursion list based on your itinerary. Using your cruise booking number, you can easily book shore excursions online as early as 60 days before your trip and up to 3 days before departure, depending on the cruise line.

Visit the cruise line’s website to find information on specific excursions:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean International

You may also register for your Shore Excursions once onboard the ship. All shore excursion requests are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Waitlisted requests for sold-out shore excursions will be processed before requests made onboard.

For more information please call one of our Reservation Coordinators at 800 247 1899 , Monday through Friday between 8:30am-5:00pm, Pacific Time.

Here are a few ways to make the most of your Canada/New England cruise:

We want to help make your trip as smooth and as enjoyable as possible. We can book motorcoach transfers for you from the airport to your cruise departure port and on your return trip.

Hotel Stays

Remember that you always have the option of arriving earlier or staying later. For example, hotel reservations may be available if you want to arrive a few days early before boarding your cruise or stay a few days after the cruise returns.

As you plan for your upcoming Christian cruise with Inspiration, you may wonder about using money and credit cards during your travels. We’ve made the following recommendations to help you save money, avoid unnecessary fees and focus on an exceptional travel experience.

  • Consider leaving all unnecessary credit cards at home.
  • Once you determine which cards you’ll bring, remember to notify each credit card company of your intended travel dates and locations to ensure fraud alerts and holds are not placed on your accounts.
  • For each card, you’ll want to store the bank’s contact information in a separate, secure location in the unlikely event your wallet or purse is lost or stolen.

Almost all businesses in Victoria or Vancouver, Canada accept U.S. credit or debit cards. If you plan to use your credit cards, you’ll want to check with each credit card company to determine the international exchange fee for each card. Because the difference of a few percentage points could cost you more (depending on your purchases), we recommend using cards with lower international exchange fees. Using your credit card for large purchases gives you more protection for the items you buy on your trip. You can review your credit card statement to verify all of your purchases.

The Canadian Dollar (C$) is the official currency when your cruise stops in Canada, however U.S. dollars are widely accepted. When paying in U.S. dollars expect change in Canadian Dollars so bring small bills. If traveling with currency other than the U.S. dollar you may exchange money onboard the ship, although we always recommend checking the exchange rate before traveling to a foreign country.

Today’s technology allows you to stay connected while traveling—ensuring you get that memorable photo or message from your loved ones. On most ships, you should be able to use your cell phone or smartphone to do everything you’re used to doing at home. In addition, mobile phones provide convenient access for emergencies and confirming travel plans. Some basic guidelines and tips will help you save money, keep your phone working effectively and stay in touch.

Before you leave

Spending some time contacting your cell phone carrier before your trip will help ensure you can call friends and family back home and eliminate any surprises on your phone bill when you return. Let your phone carrier know your travel plans, including how you plan to use your phone on your cruise. You’ll want to make sure you understand all of the potential charges. Contact your carrier for specific information.

Check with your carrier for international dialing access

You will want to make sure international and cruise package dialing is active on your mobile phone plan so that you can use it in the Canadian ports and remember that international and maritime roaming rates will apply to calls placed onboard the ship (charges will appear on your phone bill). Because roaming rates can be high on cruises, checking with your carrier for specific cost details before you leave is a good idea.

Aboard your flight and cruise

Your cell phone’s battery life is the key to keeping you connected. Below are some tips for staying powered up on your trip:

  • Remember to set your phone to Airplane Mode when you board your flight. You can also do this aboard the cruise when sailing to avoid roaming charges unless you have the cruise ship package with your carrier. This suspends all calling and texting functions but still allows you to play games, use your camera and listen to music, etc.
  • On the cruise, you’ll want to charge your phone every night to ensure enough battery life for the next day.
  • Try to turn off your phone when you’re not using it. Leaving your phone on all day drains the battery, so it’s a good idea to turn it off while you’re on a shore excursion, eating or reading.

Smartphone tips

As one of the most popular communication devices today, smartphones have revolutionized how we connect and the world. We know leaving your smartphone behind for an hour, much less multiple days is difficult. The following tips will help you save your phone’s battery life and get the most out of your smartphone while on the cruise:

  • Before your cruise, you’ll want to disable any applications that give you regular updates, such as sports reports and weather updates.
  • Disable the Data Enabled or Data Roaming option on your phone and keep it off until you reach your destination. Turn off the function for “Automatic” checking of emails and change the email settings to “Manual” to reduce data roaming charges. During your trip, you can check for email messages when connected to a free, wireless Internet connection, such as in a hotel lobby or Internet cafe while in port.

In-room phones and phone cards

If you choose to not bring your mobile phone, you can stay in touch with others while on your cruise using the in-room phones. Please make sure you understand all of the charges associated with this before you place your call, as the rates can be expensive.

Your cruise vacation allows you to travel without the hassle of checking in and out of hotels, packing and unpacking, and spending valuable time trying to find quality restaurants–all with excellent service dedicated to enhancing your exceptional travel experience.

Each cruise line makes rewarding the excellent service you’ll receive onboard easy. A gratuity of $16-$19 per day (depending on the cruise line and cabin category), per guest for dining and stateroom services will be automatically added daily to your shipboard account. The cruise line also will automatically add an 18% service charge to beverages purchased through your onboard account. Before the end of the cruise, the Cruise Director will address more specific questions regarding tipping procedures.

If you take a taxi to the pier, it’s common to simply round up to the next dollar when paying your tab. The cab drivers appreciate this, and it is considered part of their income.

When you arrive at the ship on embarkation day, we suggest tipping the porters at the pier $1.25 per bag when they take your luggage to place it on the ship.

A 15-20% tip for restaurant service workers is appreciated when visiting restaurants off the ship and during shore excursions.

From the stunning fall landscapes and quaint towns of Maine to the lighthouses and scenery of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the laid-back charm of this region has enchanted travelers for centuries. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to indulge in your love of lobster as you visit quaint fishing villages. You’ll also find amazing shopping, culture and hospitality in more urban destinations. We recommend seeing Acadia National Park while in Bar Harbor, Maine, and touring the cobblestone streets and historic buildings of Old Quebec.
