There is a bus stop right by the cruise ship terminal in Santa Cruz Tenerife and 11 stops in all. The full route takes approximately 90 minutes and the buses run every 30 minutes. Guests can listen to the commentary in 7 languages including a special commentary for kids in Spanish. See the link below to download the route map so you can plan your day. You may book up to 3 months prior to your excursion date. The incredible city of Santa Cruz has many hop-off points for you to go and explore the culture of Tenerife. Three of our most recommended is Plaza de España, The Auditorium, and the African Market. Plaza de España is located at Bus Stop number 1. Be sure to have a look around, with the beautiful water fountain surrounded by trees and flowers, along with sensational pieces of architecture. Pop down to the museum underneath, to find out all about the history of this area - where Lord Nelson had his arm shot off in battle! The Auditorium is the 8th Bus Stop. Situated by the picturesque pools of Santa Cruz, take a stroll around this incredible building - and don't forget to pack a camera! The African Market (El Mercado Africano) is the 11th Bus Stop, and is visited by people from all over the island every Sunday when you can really soak up the atmosphere and look around the vast variety of stalls to pick up a souvenir or two! Some attractions are free but others have an entrance fee that is not included.

Included are 2 Guided Walks. From Plaza de España there is the 'Historic route' guided walk, which will really make you feel part of Santa Cruz's history as you retrace the footsteps of Lord Nelson, and learn all about the battles fought for the island. The other guided walk is at Garcia Sanabria Park - Bus Stop number 4 - one of the most sensational parks in Tenerife.

You will also get entrance to the stunning Botanical garden on the coast of Santa Cruz. Enjoy a stroll around the vibrant and colorful plants and trees - and embrace this natural beauty! The Museum of Nature and Man, which is located in the center of Santa Cruz not far from the African Market, is also included in your bus pass. Hop off at Bus Stop 11 and take a look! From Bus Stop 10, you will have so much more of Tenerife right at your fingertips. The Bus Station has links to all over the island, and with your City Sightseeing pass you can get on two of them for free - visit the wonderful Teresitas Beach and feel the perfect warm sand underneath you as you look out to the ocean or up at the mountains. There is also a bus to La Laguna from the bus station which you can also have a free ride on - visit this historical city which used to be the capital of Tenerife.

Detailed description

Sightseeing tour by bus and train in santa cruz, tenerife.

Discover the capital of Tenerife by hop-on-hop-off bus or train from Santa Cruz. The route leads to the most important sights of the city. During the trip in the double-decker bus you follow the pictures of the city and the audio guide, which informs in 14 languages about history, culture and present. The Santa Cruz city tour begins at Plaza de España. You can get on and off at 15 stops and then walk to the points of interest. A tour lasts about 40 minutes. The 24-ticket for the Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus also includes the possibility to take the tourist train, which stops at 8 stops between the Botanical Gardens of Santa Cruz and the port.

The ticket price for the tourist bus includes a visit to the Military History Museum (stop 4). From there you can quickly get to the port or to the cruise ship mooring. There is also a stop at Garcia Sanabria Park (stop 5). Parque García Sanabria is a 6.7 ha park in the northern part of the city centre. The tour continues via Plaza Pedro Schwartz to the auditorium. The concert hall, which opened in 2003 and was designed by the internationally renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, is located approx. 1.5 km south of the city centre in the Los Llanos district directly by the sea.

The tour takes you to the "Mercado Nuestra Señora de Africa" (stop 13), which was built after the Second World War so that the inhabitants could feed themselves better. On the upper level, the building is divided into three "courtyards" (Spanish: "patio"): Today, the Patio Central also has a children's playground and various special events take place here. The "Patio del Poniente" also has market stalls in its centre in contrast to the "Patio del Naciente" where there is a fountain and a café in the centre of the square. The basement also houses the fish market, which has a direct entrance to the Avenida San Sebastian (Rambla Azul).

16 Best Things To Do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife - 2024 Guide

places to visit santa cruz de tenerife

Although Tenerife is a very popular destination for people from all over Europe, its capital - Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is often overlooked by tourists, except for the time when the carnival is happening.

What to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife - top sights and best places to visit

1. join the carnival in santa cruz, 2. shopping in santa cruz de tenerife, 3. mercado municipal nuestra senora de africa / market of our lady of africa, 4. calle del castillo - the main pedestrian street in santa cruz, 5. plaza de españa, 6. castillo de san cristobal, 7. parque garcia sanabria, 8. plaza el príncipe de asturias, 9. plaza los patos, 10. auditorio de tenerife adan martin, 11. parque maritimo cesar manrique, 12. palmetum - botanical garden in santa cruz de tenerife, 13. museums in santa cruz de tenerife , 14. playa de las teresitas, 15. plaza weyler, 16. valleseco beach, one of the most recent attractions in santa cruz de tenerife.

If you're visiting Tenerife and you want to feel the local pulse and get to know another side of the island beyond the resorts in the south, you should definitely visit Santa Cruz. After visiting the capital you can easily head over to the most beautiful beach in the north of Tenerife called Playa de las Teresitas .

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is still pretty much a city for the island's residents and the tourists rarely make it up here. This means that the city is laid back, chilled and you can find lots of bars and restaurants that are filled only with residents, which means that here you'll taste some authentic food and tapas.

carnaval santa cruz de tenerife parade

The carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, often referred to as the main Tenerife carnival is the second largest carnival in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro. Each year the carnival has another theme and people get dressed up and party on the streets of Santa Cruz.

If you have accommodation in the south it's recommended that you travel to the capital by bus, as the city will be extremely busy and you will find nowhere to park your car. During the carnival days, there will be special buses from all over Tenerife, so it's safer to choose this option if you want to participate in the Tenerife Carnival.

santa cruz de tenerife

In Santa Cruz, you will find all the shops and big brands usually available in Spain, from Primark, which is situated in the Meridiano Shopping Center, to Carrefour, Alcampo (Auchan), El Corte Ingles and also the only IKEA store in Tenerife.

You can read more in our dedicated article about shopping in Tenerife .

At this market you will find lots of options of local food: fruits and vegetables and other foodie souvenirs.

Even the building itself is a nice place to visit in Santa Cruz, with its colonial style and interior yard. The market is open every day from 9 am to 2:30 PM, except for Mondays when it's closed.

Santa cruz de tenerife capital

Calle del Castillo is the main pedestrian street and one of the central places to go in Santa Cruz if you're looking to do some shopping. There are lots of shops and also beautiful buildings where you can find a place to sit down and take a break.

We always like to discover a new city by walking aimlessly around its streets. This way we also found a small local restaurant, that was filled only with locals. They were only serving Menu del dia - a special lunch menu, where you can choose from a few options. For around 8 Euros we had a filling lunch, which also included a big bottle of water and a coffee at the end.

Teide tenerife 600 250

After our lunch in Santa Cruz, we continued our walk towards Plaza de Espana. As far as we learned, this place will be transformed in the nearby future to improve the city's waterfront.

If you cross the square you will find some stairs that will take you to the remains of Castillo de San Cristobal, which you can visit for free. It's a nice way to learn more about the history of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the island itself.

parque garcia santabria santa cruz tenerife

A beautiful park near the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Our walks also took us to park Garcia Sanabria, which is a rather small park and it's not usually visited by tourists. However, we enjoyed our walk here and we admired the beautiful flowers that were in bloom in January , although we were in the north of the island.

plaza del principe santa cruz tenerife 800 400

A lovely shaded square in the center of Santa Cruz, with a beautiful pavilion in the middle of the square.

It's a good place to stop for a short break during your walks through the streets of Tenerife's capital city.

plaza los patos santa cruz tenerife places to visit

This square has recently been renovated and it looks absolutely charming, with a romantic Spanish feel, due to the ceramic benches and fountain, which is located in the middle of the square (the square is actually a roundabout, situated very close to Parque Garcia Santabria).

If you want to visit the building of the Auditorio, which is designed by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava, you can arrive here by car, as the place has its own parking of around 100 places (you will pay around 0,7 euros/hour).

Parque cesar manrique tenerife

This is a beautiful complex designed by the famous Cesar Manrique, with lots of pools and beautiful views towards Auditorio de Tenerife.

The entrance to the park is very cheap, around 2,5 euros for adults so it's nice to go in just to see the installations and have a cup of coffee while admiring the place.

The Palmetum project is truly unique and you should come to see it if you're visiting Santa Cruz.

The place where Palmetum is located today used to be the city's rubbish dump and it took a lot of years of hard work to transform it into the beautiful garden that it is today. You'll see palm trees from around the world and also other types of plants (depends on the time of the year when you visit).

A walk through the Palmetum will also offer beautiful views towards the ocean or toward the Auditorio and Parque Maritimo Cesar Manrique, as all these 3 points of interest are located in the same area.

We recommend:

  • The Museum of Nature and Man
  • Military Museum Santa Cruz (Museo Historico Militar de Canarias)

Santa Cruz de Tenerife also has museums that you can visit and the most important one, which should not be missed, is The Museum of Nature and Man (Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre). There are also other museums in Santa Cruz and there's also a Castle Route organized, where you can visit several of the museums in the capital of Tenerife.

The Military Museum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is FREE to visit.

Here you can see exhibits of arms & uniforms and you can learn more info about the conquest of Tenerife. So if you're here on a rainy day and you're looking for some indoor activities, this is one of the best things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and it won't cost you anything either.

playa las teresitas tenerife

This beach is the most famous and popular beach in the north of Tenerife.

Although it's not technically located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it is the most popular beach among residents in the capital.

During the summer weekends, it does get pretty crowded, as many locals from Santa Cruz come here to sunbathe. If you have a car, go up to the Mirador to see the view over the beach Las Teresitas , as it's one of the iconic images of Tenerife that you usually see on postcards.

Plaza Weyler is a central square in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which bears the surname of Lieutenant General Valeriano Weyler.

Currently, the square is no longer just a space for recreation because it is located in one of the areas of the city with the greatest pedestrian traffic, so it is used as a transit route. However, its garden beds are very well cared for and preserved, which makes it one of the most beautiful public squares in Santa Cruz, where you can also stop to grab a cup of coffee enjoying an authentic Canarian experience.

valleseco beach santa cruz de tenerife

Playa Valleseco is the most recent addition in terms of swimming areas in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a much-needed space in a big city that has no sandy beach, as opposed to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria that has the amazing Las Canteras beach, probably the best urban beach in Spain.

The Valleseco Charcos Zone materializes the design of the project known as “Sol y Sombra” by Casariego Guerra Arquitectos., which won first prize in the ideas competition held in 2005.

It has a length of 340 meters and a total area of 13,300 square meters in which protection docks have been built, complemented by floating platforms, as well as accessible docks and ramps.

The project also includes green areas and grass areas, as well as fountains, showers and adapted toilets.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands

A day in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The starting point to tour the rest of the island

Santa Cruz de Tenerife , capital of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, is perfect to enjoy at any time of the year thanks to its pleasant climate. If you have organised a multi-day trip to tour the island, you must stop in this coastal city for at least 24 hours with its gardens, squares and terraces that are perfect for a drink. It is also known world-wide for its Carnival . You could even use Santa Cruz as your base and explore the rest of Tenerife by car. Here are some ideas for you.

Why not spend the first part of the day on the beach.

In the Canary Islands the weather is always pleasant, with the temperatures during the coldest months ranging between 16ºC and 24ºC. As soon as you wake up you could go for a swim, sunbathe or go for a stroll along its best-known beach, Las Teresitas . It is alive with palm trees and, although it belongs to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it is located in the town of San Andrés. Its calm waters and great facilities are ideal if you are travelling with children. A little further from the city lie the beaches of Taganana and Benijo. The council has installed a series of webcams so that you can check them out in real time.

Left: Las Teresitas beach / Right: César Manrique Maritime Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands)

Other places to take a dip The César Manrique Maritime Park , a complex of several swimming pools with artificial waterfalls and beautiful views. If instead of relaxing you are looking for a bit of “action”, try diving, snorkelling, surfing, sailing or paddle-surfing. You will find a whole range of activities at the Marine Sports Centre .

Time to leave San Andrés and return to Santa Cruz. We recommend a spot of shopping and some food in the iconic Nuestra Señora de África market.

Before you leave the coast make sure you take some snaps for your memories, either on the Las Teresitas beach or in the marina, of the dozens of anchored yachts. Afterwards, you could take a leisurely stroll through the city's shopping streets and pick up a few souvenirs. You've probably worked up an appetite by now, and you've got several options. Treat yourself and book a table at one of the restaurants recommended by the Michelin Guide. A treat for any palate.

Another safe bet is the iconic Nuestra Señora de África market , where you will find different varieties of cheeses, wines, freshly made food and endless flavours, to eat in or take away. It only opens in the morning and is perfect if you're looking for an authentic taste of Santa Cruz.

Many of the city's tourist hot spots can be discovered on foot.

You could start by visiting some of the most famous squares, for example Plaza de la Candelaria, Plaza Weyler, Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias and Plaza de España . Hidden underneath the latter, in an underground gallery, are the remains of San Cristóbal castle, which was the first important fortification on the island in the 16th century. However, the best preserved castle in the city is San Juan Bautista. One of the best things about walking around Santa Cruz de Tenerife is that it has a large permanent outdoor exhibition. As you stroll along its avenues and parks, for example, García Sanabria , you will come across works by renowned artists such as Henry Moore, Martín Chirino, Joan Miró and Óscar Domínguez.

Left: San Juan Bautista castle / Centre: Plaza de España / Right: La Concepcion church in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands)

Before you leave Santa Cruz, make sure to visit the La Concepción church or the San Francisco church . And if you feel like visiting a museum, the Nature and Archeology (MUNA) houses the famous Guanche mummies. The most popular museum in the city is the modern Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) which has showcased works by artists such as Warhol, Ansel Adams, Patti Smith, Carlos Schwartz, Dorothea Lange and Henry Moore. If you're travelling with the little ones, you'll love the Palmetum Botanical Garden and its impressive collection of palm trees (the best in Europe).

Santa Cruz is teeming with bars, restaurants, taverns and charming terraces where you can go for tapas, try tasting menus or sip a glass of wine.

Relax while nibbling on some “papas arrugadas” (wrinkled potatoes) with spicy mojo sauce, grilled cheese, “almogrote” (a kind of cheese paté), “ropa vieja” (a typical dish made with shredded beef and chicken)... In this page you can choose from the different beach clubs, roof tops, gastrobars and restaurants the city has to offer.

View of Santa Cruz de Tenerife at night (Canary Islands)

The best way to end your visit is a show, either before or after dinner. The impressive and iconic white building of the Tenerife Auditorium , designed by Santiago Calatrava, offers an impressive repertoire of music, dance and opera shows. Check the schedule, because you won't want to miss out on one of these performances.

Tips and recommendations

Worth knowing

To fly to the island, there are two international airports: Tenerife South and Tenerife North (the latter just 10 minutes by car from the city). There is a tourist bus and train that connects the main points of interest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, such as the Plaza de España or the Auditorium. This map shows the different stops and timetables. Some of the most recommended trips from the city are: - The Anaga Rural Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve. You can explore different paths and bathe in the coves of fine black sand, for example Benijo. - Teide National Park, where you can find a volcano (its summit is highest point in Spain), which you can visit by cable car. - The nearby world heritage city: San Cristóbal de La Laguna. - Boat trip to the neighbouring island of La Gomera. - Whale watching by sailing boat.

When to go on the route

Any time of the year is a good time to visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the island in general, but the Carnival at the end of February should be on your bucket list. It is considered one of the best in the world. In this case you must book accommodation in advance though. At Casa del Carnaval you will find a permanent exhibition with traditional carnival costumes, posters and a sensory space with coloured lights and sounds that are typical of this celebration.

Tenerife

Soft sandy beach set against backdrops of towering volcanoes await on holidays to Tenerife.

Holidays in tenerife.

The most popular Canary Island, Tenerife attracts over six million sun-seekers to its shores every year. So, it’s no surprise that the island has beach holidays down to an art. Ideal for beach lovers and adventure-seekers, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in Tenerife.

When is the best time to visit?

Boasting warm temperatures, no matter the season, it’s always a good time to visit this beautiful island. If you’re searching for a cheap trip, try travelling outside the peak holiday season when the island is less crowded. Typically, March to May (excluding Easter) as well as October and November are the best times to visit Tenerife without breaking the bank.

Where is the best place to stay in Tenerife?

Tenerife is an island of two halves. One half is buzzing beaches and lively resorts. The other is lush landscapes, national parks, and traditional towns.

The action-packed south is where much-loved resorts come alive. Expect chic shopping and a touch of glamour from Costa Adeje, cabaret crowd-pleasers and neon nights in Playa De Las Americas , and a charming marina packed with shorefront restaurants in Los Cristianos.

A step back to a more traditional beach break, the northern resorts of Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz offer a more peaceful getaway. Escape to tucked-away resorts and quaint traditional villages. Enjoy tranquil beachside dining and sun-kissed days of wine-tasting and exploring old towns. If remote, laid-back luxury is your vibe - the north is perfect for you.

Food & Drink in the Canary Islands

Tenerife combines Spanish flavours with more Venezuelan influences. Restaurants in the north of Tenerife serve up daily menus of traditional Canarian tapas, fresh seafood, and other regional specialities. Down south the main resorts offer a good mixture of local, international, and British cuisine.

If you’re interested in trying some local food, start easy with papas arrugadas aka wrinkled potatoes. Smothered in salt and served warm with a bowl of mojo sauce on the side, they change the potato game.

Europa Press

Tiempo de lectura: 2' 25 may 2024 - 14:19 Actualizado 14:20
