Don pedro island: 3 generations, 2 days, 1 slice of paradise in southwest florida, dalia colón enjoyed an overnight getaway to don pedro island, florida on the coast of the gulf of mexico. accompanying dalia were her 2-year-old daughter and dalia’s parents who were visiting from ohio. here’s their review..

LOVEFL-STORIES-DON PEDRO-ISLAND

DALIA: Journalist

I admit when I first heard about “Don Pedro,” I thought it sounded more like a rum than an island. But what awaited us was equally intoxicating.

Don Pedro Island, FL is blissfully off the beaten path . The 7-mile-long hideaway is home to beach houses, tennis courts, a fire station and little else. And that’s just the way folks here like it. Golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation and the island’s only restaurants are housed inside its only hotel, Palm Island Resort .

You won’t find any amusement parks -- just the natural attractions of Don Pedro Island State Park, which offers boating, fishing, hiking, and other unplugged activities.

The beachfront house we rented from Islander Properties looked like something out of Coastal Living magazine, with its wicker furniture, tropical decor and all the finishing touches that make for an effortless getaway, right down to linens and cooking utensils.

Before our trip I called the property manager to ask about things to do on the island. His response? “Come here and breathe.” Now I get it.

FRED: Dalia’s father

Picturesque, serene, quiet, warm and sunny are the thoughts that pop into my head after visiting Don Pedro Island.

It was far above my expectations. It’s the affordable, pampered lifestyle for the un-rich and un-famous. Great housing with all the amenities. Just bring food, period.

This is the other side of Disney and Busch Gardens that’s a must-experience. Escape the hustle and bustle and find what you’ve been missing.

LINDA: Dalia’s mother

From the moment I arrived on Don Pedro Island, I wished you were here. I know how much you love vacations off the beaten path.

Our house was 200 feet from a beach strewn with shells I’d never seen. On the afternoon we arrived it was dotted here and there with people under umbrellas or playing in the surf. Families of plovers played their own games at water’s edge until we inadvertently startled them into flight.

Later, after dinner, we watched the sun set over the gulf and read until lulled to sleep by slashing waves.

Next time you’ll have to come.

NORAH: Dalia’s 2-year-old daughter (as imagined by Dalia)

People are always buying me fancy toys, but I much prefer a bucket and a beach full of sand. On Don Pedro Island, I loved building sandcastles with Papi and running through the surf with Grandma. Even Mommy, who’s usually busy with chores at home, had plenty of time to blow bubbles with me and color on the screened-in porch.

The island felt like no place I’d been before but it also had the comforts of home. After our day of fun in the sun I got to watch Sesame Street ; our beach house had three TVs, plus shelves of books and games for the whole family. For dinner, Mommy packed all my favorite foods and served them on the dishes that came in the kitchen. At bedtime, I took a bath in the tub before falling asleep in a pirate-themed bedroom.

Since Grandma and Papi live up North I don’t get to see them as much as I’d like. But during our getaway to Don Pedro Island we made memories to last a long, long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included on the tour, what do i need to bring/wear.

  • Clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet (swimwear is acceptable)
  • Cash for gratuites (Always appreciated, never required)
  • There is room for a small cooler on the kayaks, however keep in mind that smaller is better.  No alcohol is allowed on our tours.

Do you need any experience to take a tour?

No.  Our Don Pedro and Dog Island tours are perfect for beginners, and our guide will give a paddle lesson before departing on the tour.  Our guides also carry all necessary rescue and tow equipment to ensure the safety of all of our clients, no matter their experience level.

How big are the tours?

We try to limit the tours to a maximum of 12 clients, but usually the tours are much smaller.  We keep our tour sizes small, for both the quality of our clients experience and most importantly your safety.

What is your cancellation/weather policy?

Cancellation required to be 48 hours in advance for 50% Refund, or Rain check for full tour on a later date. Within 24 hours. It’s a Rain check for anytime in the future with Kind Vibes. If KindVibes Outfitters determines weather is an issue we will either reschedule or give a full refund. Large groups booked in advance will require a 10 day notice and refund will have a 20% cancellation fee.

Is there an age requirement for the tours?

The minimum age to go on our tours is 5 years old. The Don Pedro or Dog Island tours are great for kids of all types, but with that said we do not recommend the Living History Half Day or the CHAP Backcountry trip for young children, due to the duration and route of those trips.  We do provide appropriately sized children’s PFDs (life vests) on all of our tours and rentals.

Do I need to wear my PFD?

The safety of our clients is our number one priority, so it is required that everyone on our tours wear their life vests at all times while on the water.

What kind of wildlife will we see?

We cannot guarantee any particular wildlife sightings, however just some of the wildlife regularly seen in the area include West Indian Manatees, Bottlenose Dolphins, Osprey, Bald Eagles, many different types of herons and egrets, shellfish, crustaceans, and much much more!

Are there alligators on the tour?

Alligators can be present in any body of water here in SW Florida. However, our Don Pedro and Dog Island tours travel through saltwater areas that gators tend to avoid. With that said, alligators are not the vicious beasts many think they are; like the vast majority of wildlife, they are terrified of you and just want to be left alone.

Will I get wet?

The short answer is yes, but not soaked. You can expect to be in knee-deep water while getting into and out of your kayak, and of course there are opportunities to get wet if you so choose!

What kind of kayaks will we be paddling?

We take pride in providing you with the best equipment in the industry, we have both single and tandem kayaks that are very stable, fast, and track well and have plenty of storage space as well as top of the line stadium-style seats.

About  Don Pedro Island

Screen Shot 2023-05-03 at 2.49.28 PM.png

Don Pedro Island, which is also known as Palm Island, is part of a small chain of barrier islands just off the coast of Placida, Florida. Placida is a small town a stone's throw from Englewood, Florida. We are about an hour fifteen minutes north of the Southwest Florida (Fort Myers) International Airport and about an hour thirty minutes south from Tampa International Airport. Other barrier islands found nearby include Boca Grande, Little Gasparilla and Manasota Key. Our islands are accessible by boat or the local car ferry service operated by Palm Island Transit . The ferry crossing, which takes about three minutes, will transport you, and your car to our island. It operates seven days a week. Below, we've included more information about the islands and the island lifestyle. We've also included some local area links so you can get a feel for our sleepy little beach town and things to do around the area.

Don pedro & palm island.

No crowds here, just miles of unspoiled, 100% natural Florida (the way it used to be!). World renowned shelling, fantastic sunsets and bird watching galore. You'll enjoy numerous dolphin sightings right along the beach, native gopher tortoise, and a lively lagoon where fish jump all day long. Don Pedro Island State Park is a short walk down the beach and includes a pavilion and nature trails.

You’ll want to capture the Island’s charm by traveling via golf cart, we rarely use cars here. Golf cart rental is available on the island, so please inquire about the golf cart if you'd like to include one with your rental.

Bring your boat or rent one for the ultimate in Florida lifestyle. All of our properties include a dock that will accommodate a single boat up to 22 feet. Coquina Cove includes a private dock and the townhomes offer community docks which are rarely used.

Like to fish? Fish right off the dock or try your luck surf fishing or book a charter with one of the local guides for a thrilling day of sport fishing or backwater challenges. Trout, Redfish, Snook, Tarpon and Grouper are just a few of the many species that call our waters home.

Don Pedro Island (Palm Island) is a barrier island and a stones throw from the mainland. You’ll arrive via a short car ferry ride that takes about three minutes. Our island has a terrific resort on the north end of the island that offers a casual restaurant, ice cream & coffee shop, very small convenience store, gift shop and a pirate show for the kids. The island is almost all single family homes so you’ll quickly find it has a pristine "non-commercial” family feel. There are no large high-rise resorts, beach bars or traffic and noise. If you’re looking for that place in the sun that you can actually hear the wind whistle through the palms - you’ve found your place.

Off island you’ll be close to restaurants, shops, golf courses and world famous Boca Grande as well as other attractions. As we like to say ... civilization is close, but not too close. Boca Grande offers exclusive shopping, dining and sightseeing. By boat you can reach Cayo Costa Island State Park and Cabbage Key where Jimmy Buffet was inspired to write "Cheeseburger In Paradise." Do it all, or do nothing at all, that’s the “island” lifestyle. It’s laid back, always casual (leave your tie at home) and Florida at its best. Come to our island and see why so many have fallen in love with this little "slice" of paradise!

A Florida native's view of the barrier islands

Dale Novak

I grew up in Florida and as a child and teenager we would always head over to the Gulf Coast beaches for our recreation and vacations. It was a lot of fun and holds a bunch of fond memories for me. Back then, the Gulf Coast was less discovered and certainly less developed. Today, it's hard to find a beach with so few people and so underdeveloped. Quite refreshing to say the least.

We chose Don Pedro Island (Palm Island) for the natural beauty and "Old Florida" feel. This chain of islands just may be the last true Florida beach you can walk down (7 miles long) and hardly see another person. We also liked that there are no beach bars and no high-rise buildings. It is the best of Old Florida, natural, unspoiled and a genuine paradise.

We decided to purchase our homes here for the unspoiled beauty of the island and the area in general. Englewood is a low-key Old Florida "beach town" that reminds you of how Florida looked many years ago, without the huge high-rise condominiums and massive hotels clogging the beach. There are plenty of local "home-grown" shops and restaurants and the fishing is some of the best in the world. The beaches are fantastic and the boating and shelling is world-class. If you are looking for a great family area that is close to everything, but far away from the congestion, traffic and noise, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place.

The only way to get on and off the island is by a three minute car ferry ride, or your own private boat. Having no bridge to the island allows for a semi-private atmosphere and keeps beach going traffic to an absolute minimum. The island is all residential other than the resort area at the north end of Palm Island which offers a quality restaurant, snack and ice cream shoppe and small convenience store. Most all of the island traffic is by golf cart.

Staying on the island is not for everyone. If you like lots of places to shop, tourist attractions, beach bars and chain restaurants, this isn't the place for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for uncrowded and unspoiled beaches, great kayaking, fishing and swinging in a hammock under some breezy palms, this may be just the place. It's for a couple or family that wants some serious down-time ... a place to unplug and recharge your batteries and enjoy some great family time.

INSIDER'S TIP: Visit the super cool "secret" mangrove tunnel and the hidden lagoon.

NOTE: Please stay close to the mangroves and land while traveling in the Intercoastal Waterway due to swift moving boats and wake patterns. The hidden lagoon is within the boundries of Don Pedro Island State Park.

Fact primitive camping along the lakeshore, known as dispersed area camping, is a unique and popular activity that allows don pedro lake campers to travel by boat and set up camp along the water’s edge in primitive locations. such use requires a dispersed area camping/lake navigation map and permit (obtain at the entrance station - first come first serve). campers are reminded that open fires are not allowed and to be prepared for primitive conditions. “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints”… operation and maintenance of the don pedro recreation area is mostly supported by facility use fees with some contributions from the sponsoring agencies. "don pedro" was actually a mid-1800’s land owner of french descent, named pierre sainsevain. he was known as don pedro by the mexicans in the area. the land he owned along the tuolumne river included don pedro bar which is now inundated by don pedro lake. numerous species of fish exist in don pedro lake, including salmon kokanee, king and silver salmon can be caught at the lake with the kings reaching weights in excess of 10 lbs the biggest largemouth bass caught at don pedro lake to date has been recorded at 18.9 lbs. water from don pedro lake is primarily used for irrigating the farm land that falls within the turlock irrigation district and modesto irrigation district boundaries. it is also used for power generation, and adds to the drinking water supply for city of modesto. don pedro dam also provides flood control for california’s central valley. no need to stockpile your quarters when camping at don pedro lake’s developed campgrounds. hot showers are available at no charge the crest of don pedro dam is 855’ above sea level. the water in don pedro lake is at its maximum elevation when it is 830’ above sea level. the old don pedro dam still exists at don pedro lake. some 220’ under the water of a full lake, the old don pedro dam is 1.5 miles upstream from the current dam’s location. completed in 1923, it was, at the time, the world’s largest concrete gravity dam. the lake created by the old dam, with its storage capacity of 289.000 acre feet, was only 14% of the capacity of the current lake. don pedro dam rises 580 feet above the tuolumne river. well over 60 bass and fishing tournaments are held annually at don pedro lake. the fish caught during these tournaments are released back into the lake to be caught another day hook-up campsites at the three developed camping areas offer electrical connections of 30 amps (120v power) and 20 amps (120v power). the warm weather of summer beckons water activity, bringing about over 80% of the recreation use between the months of may and september. even though the weather in spring and fall can be less predictable, some of the area’s most beautiful weather with comfortable temperatures occurs at that time. outlaws of the mid 1800’s frequented the area around don pedro lake. marshes flat road, located along the east side of the lake, was a route frequently traveled by the likes of outlaw joaquin murrieta, where he was also known to hideout after his misdeeds. water is not directly diverted from don pedro lake to the city and county of san francisco. the city and county of san francisco’s partnership in the construction of the current don pedro dam benefits them through the relief from upstream flood control responsibilities and greater flexibility in its upstream water operations..

This California Lake Is The Perfect Family-Friendly Spot For An Outdoor Weekend In The Sun

Lake Don Pedro, California

When you think of fun in the sun in California, you may picture attractive young people carting their boards to the shore to  surf on Malibu's beaches . Perhaps your vision has fans doing their best to spot Hollywood celebrities at outdoor cafes in Los Angeles while they make movie deals on the phone. However, there is so much more to California than what you see in the movies and on TV. That goes double when we're talking about the wonderful parks up and down the Golden State.

Just a bit under 50 miles east of Modesto in Northern California sits Lake Don Pedro, aka Don Pedro Reservoir, and it has all sorts of water sports, camping, and fishing for outdoorsy types. This lake has 13,000 surface acres of water to play in and 160 miles of shoreline. There is hiking, biking, and some incredibly scenic views to be had, but there are a few helpful things to know before you go to this lesser-known recreation area of California.

On the shore and in the water at Lake Don Pedro

Lake Don Pedro looks like a spot out of a dream, with its green hills and sparkling blue water. If fishing is your sport, grab your California fishing license ( or get one here ) and set out for a day of fun and maybe a night of yummy, freshly caught dinner. The lake is open for fishing all year long. The only places that close are the tributary creeks from November through April. The lake is stocked with several different kinds of fish, including black and largemouth bass, rainbow trout, brook and brown trout, Chinook and Kokanee salmon, sunfish, bluegill, carp, and crappie.

The record for a largemouth bass caught at Lake Don Pedro is 18.9 lbs! You are also permitted to hunt here (with a license) in non-developed and dispersed areas. No firearms or shooting/target practice is permitted in campgrounds or recreation areas. Boating is another popular activity at the lake, and you can rent boats through H20 Craft . There are three launch ramps, as well as floating restrooms.

There are great spots for hiking and biking at Lake Don Pedro as well. Three multi-use trails include the Manzanita Lookout Trail, which is a short walk through the Manzanita trees. If you'd like something a bit longer, you can take the Moccasin Point Lake View Trail, a one-mile roundtrip with lots of shade and views of Moccasin Bay. The Blue Oaks Shoreline Trail is a longer, seven-mile roundtrip hike or cycling route.

Camping at Lake Don Pedro

Camping is a delight at Lake Don Pedro, with a huge number of sites of all kinds. At the Fleming Meadows Recreation Area, there are 90 full RV hookup sites, as well as 176 tent and walk-in sites. It's even got a sandy beach to sun on, a green space, picnic tables, and shelters for groups. There are horseshoe pits, a boat launch, a fish-cleaning station, a snack shack, a ball field, hot showers, a volleyball court, a sewage dump, a camp store, restrooms, and a full-service marina.

If you camp at Moccasin Point in the canyon on the Tuolumne River, there are 18 full hookup sites for RVs and 78 tent and walk-in sites. It's got restrooms with hot showers, a picnic area, a fish-cleaning station, a boat launch, and a full-service marina. The Blue Oaks campsite has 34 partial RV hookup sites and 161 tent sites, a boat launch, a fish-cleaning station, a sewage dump station, and a bathhouse. You can make reservations  at the campsites up to a year in advance.

Lake Don Pedro is also one of the few lakes in California that allows you to camp along the shore in spots that aren't designated for official camping. However, if you do this, please be conscious of the mark you're leaving on the environment and pack in and out. If you're planning a camping trip, remember to do these things before leaving your campsite .

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

don pedro travel

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

don pedro travel

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

don pedro travel

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

don pedro travel

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

don pedro travel

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

don pedro travel

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

don pedro travel

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Así operaba empresa turística acusada de estafas en El Salvador

La agencia vendía los paquetes entre los $800 y los $4,000 y cuando los afectados pretendían hacerlos efectivos les negaban el servicio, según la FGR.

Por David Cañenguez | May 17, 2024- 10:36

don pedro travel

Once ‘utterly miserable’ Margate is now a magnet for Hollywood actors

All summer we will be taking the pulse of our most famous traditional seaside towns, examining the efforts being made to regenerate them, and opining on whether they are still worth visiting. This week, Rachel Mills explores Margate.

Margate feels like nowhere else in Britain right now. Pop into any pub, coffee shop or art gallery and you’ll likely spot an uber cool A-lister, from actors such as Pedro Pascal, Emma Corrin , Rami Malek and Olivia Colman to homegrown art icon Tracey Emin . As I write this, the Pet Shop Boys are on Margate Main Sands filming a new music video. After decades of decline, this seaside town is well and truly on the up.

Sea-bathing for medicinal purposes (rebranded “wild swimming” by today’s Walpole Bay devotees) first put Margate on the tourist map in the early 18th century. This was a genteel crowd, here for bracing cold-water dips – modesty protected by a bathing machine – and quaffing seawater (definitely not advised today). Steamboats from London started to arrive in the early 19th century, and then came the railway in 1863. Margate as a seaside resort was born.

Dreamland pleasure garden and amusement park opened in the 1920s and tourism continued to boom until the 1950s and 1960s (the decade responsible for the opinion-dividing Brutalist block of flats by the train station).

But cheap package holidays abroad and a lack of investment at home kickstarted the town’s demise. Great storms damaged the lido, jetty and bathing pavilions, hotels were sold off and shops boarded up. I grew up in the area in the 1980s and 1990s and Margate – particularly its old town – was utterly miserable. Though I suppose you could at least buy a cup of tea without being fleeced. And there was a pretty good seafront nightclub called Escape (which I promptly did, for 20 years).

What’s it really like?

It’s buoyant. It’s community spirited. It’s got brilliant festivals, quirky museums and sights (hello Crab Museum and Shell Grotto) and an exorbitant amount of live music venues – Dreamland is hosting everyone from Sam Ryder to Idles and Status Quo this summer, and then there’s the brilliant independent venues like wonderfully grungy Where Else?, the Tom Thumb Theatre and the Lido Cliff Bar.

The historic Lido complex probably best represents the spirit of Margate . Despite a spruce up it still looks dilapidated from the outside – covered in graffiti and crumbling into the sea – but inside, the Cliff Bar attracts some of the best musicians around (if The Libertines play Margate in 2024, it’s likely to be here).

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to galleries (the Turner Contemporary spearheaded the regeneration, or some would say gentrification, of Margate), restaurants (book ahead), cocktail bars (bring your credit card) and stupendous sunsets (the best in all of Europe, according to Turner).

There are new and revamped hotels popping up all the time with two high-end heritage beachfront properties opening recently: Fort Road Hotel (fortroadhotel.com) and No.42 by GuestHouse (guesthousehotels.co.uk).

Best of all? It’s got people who care. Rise Up, Clean Up will be on the beach every Sunday sweeping up after the hordes of people who won’t deal with their own litter. There’s community gardens, food banks and a community shop, a soup kitchen at 101 Social, free creative events at spaces like ARK and Marine Studios. In short, this town has a soul.

What’s not to like?

Nothing can prepare you for the smell of rotting seaweed by the harbour arm at low tide. Such a pretty place smelling so bad is a travesty, only compounded by the colourful inflatables that meet their lonely end in the same corner. Litter is a really big problem in Margate too. That, and dog mess (especially in Cliftonville – the edgier end of town).

More investment is needed. The beautiful and historic Grade II-listed Winter Gardens performance space, which closed in 2022, still stands empty – though a recent £4m cash injection should see it reopen, eventually.

There’s a whole row of derelict shops close to the entrance of Dreamland called Arlington Arcade. And Margate High Street is in a sorry state, with the closure of WHSmith last month making the Post Office homeless; I don’t often venture there (unless I’m hankering after a Greggs) and the only tourists I spot look lost and frightened.

Watching the sunset from Margate Steps is a must-do. Built as a sea defence (the old town was flooded a number of times) this public space is a town hub and social leveller where people gather over fish and chips every time it isn’t Baltic. The sunsets are something else and lining the road along the steps are brilliant pubs that also make excellent viewing spots (Xylo, Little Swift, The Two Halves).

The absolute best place to eat in Margate is family-run Italian Bottega Caruso in the old town. The service is delightful, the drinks excellent and the rustic Italian cooking laugh-out-loud tasty. And if you want to take some Italian produce home with you, they’ve just opened a little shop next door, La Cantina. It’s not cheap but it is exceptional.

But don’t do this…

I think I’m the only person in Margate who doesn’t like the opening night of an art exhibition. A polite knot of people clutching drinks and spilling out from a gallery putting on a private view is almost a nightly occurrence somewhere in Margate. It’s all excruciating small talk and people surreptitiously glancing over your shoulder for someone famous.

From a local

“I love the autumn sunsets on the beach or a good winter storm rolling down the North Sea, when it’s one of the most beautiful places in England. But Margate’s also been – for 300 years – the archetypal tacky seaside resort. That contradiction brings tensions, between people who live here and daytrippers (on a busy summer day, I don’t even bother leaving the house!), and between long-term locals and recent arrivals. But under all that, there’s a year-round welcome, great shops and caf é s, and enough quirky, odd and unusual things to keep anyone busy for a long weekend.” – Dan, Margate resident since 2013

From a tourist

“I’ve spent many a joyful weekend in Margate, it’s one of my favourite places to visit. I like a dip in the sea followed by Peter’s Fish Factory for chips. The Turner Contemporary is brilliant but it’s also lovely to walk round to Cliftonville – if you’re here for a longer visit I recommend the seafront walk from Margate to Broadstairs, which could only be improved with access to some public toilets. On my way to the train station home I always pop into Big Shot for an affogato.” – Maria, London

High-speed trains from London St Pancras take around 1 hour and 30 minutes, though the non-high-speed option (not via Ashford) is only around 8 minutes slower and is cheaper. You can also travel from London Victoria to Margate in around 1 hour 42 minutes. Buy tickets in advance if possible. Car parking options are limited and free parking near the Main Sands is non-existent.
