Return of the king: Elvis hologram show to premiere in London

Elvis Evolution promises ‘immersive’ experience with concerts also planned for Las Vegas, Tokyo and Berlin

  • AI Elvis not the first hologram star to shake his moves on stage

While some believe that the king of rock’n’roll may celebrate his 89th birthday next week propping up the bar of the Heartbreak Hotel, the rest of us will have to make do with an Elvis Presley hologram show in 2024.

Elvis Evolution, an “immersive concert experience” using AI and holographic projection, will premiere in London in November, with shows also planned in Las Vegas, Tokyo and Berlin.

The technology will create a lifesize digital Elvis from thousands of his personal photos and home-video footage. The hologram will perform in a celebration of the star’s life and musical legacy after a deal between Authentic Brands Group, the owners of the Elvis Presley estate, and Layered Reality, a British immersive entertainment company.

Andrew McGuinness, chief executive of Layered Reality, said: “Elvis Evolution is a next-generation tribute to the musical legend that is Elvis Presley.

“Elvis maintains superstar status globally and people around the world no longer want to sit there and passively receive entertainment – they want to be a part of it

“It’ll be a memory-making experience that will be a bucket-list item for Elvis fans and admirers around the world; people can step into the world of Elvis, walk in his shoes and celebrate his extraordinary musical legacy.”

The show will also offer an after-party Elvis-themed bar and restaurant on site at the central London location, with live music, DJs and performances.

The initiative follows the remarkable success of Abba Voyage , a show in which lifesize avatars of the four members of the Swedish pop group perform as their human counterparts appeared in 1979, in a purpose-built arena in east London.

In its first year, Abba Voyage sold more than 1.3m tickets with reports of a forthcoming world tour. The 90-minute show and arena cost £140m and seven years to develop.

The US rock band Kiss have also unveiled avatars of themselves , depicted as superheroes.

Although Elvis never faded from the cultural consciousness, two big-screen treatments in recent years have brought him fresh attention. Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla was released in the UK this week – providing a sympathetic treatment of his ex-wife, who lived her life in his shadow after meeting him at 14 when he was 24.

And in 2022, Baz Luhrmann produced a bombastic biopic of the king’s life in music and at home – earning rave reviews for lead actor Austin Butler .

By the time Presley died suddenly in 1977 at the age 42, he was a musical and cultural giant. He revolutionised popular music, scandalised older generations and was worshipped by the young, causing hysteria and near-riots with his gyrating pelvis. He also starred in a number of movies.

Despite years of prescription drug abuse and a famously unhealthy diet, his death from heart failure came as a shock. Conspiracy theorists claimed he had faked his own death and there have been countless reports of sightings of the legendary star all over the world.

According to one theory, Presley faked his death in order to escape the mafia. Gail Brewer-Giorgio, the author of the 1988 bestselling book Is Elvis Alive?, asserted that the FBI had enlisted Presley as an undercover agent in 1976 to help it infiltrate a criminal organisation called the Fraternity.

Brewer-Giorgio said: “Elvis faked his death because he was going to be killed and there was no doubt about it.”

Some people claimed Presley appeared as an extra in the 1990 blockbuster Home Alone.

A Gallup poll conducted in 1997 found that 4% of Americans thought Presley was alive, and 93% of those surveyed were certain he was dead.

Elvis Costello was born Declan Patrick MacManus on the 25 August 1954, he is an English singer/songwriter from Paddington, London, UK.

Born in Paddington, London, UK, Costello is the son of parents Lilian Alda and Ross MacManus, the latter of whom was a trumpet player and band leader.

Costello’s first musical endeavour was with the band Rusty, which he started when he moved to Liverpool, UK, with his mother in 1971. After returning to London, another band Flip City came into fruition and saw the singer/songwriter adopt a pub-rock style of music and performance. He was later signed to the independent label Stiff Records which suggested a name change, to which he combined Elvis Presley’s first name with the name his father performed with on stage, Costello. The label released the debut album “My Aim Is True” in 1976 to good reviews as well as the reggae-driven “Watching The Detectives”.

Later being associated with the punk and new wave scenes due to Costello’s unabashed passion and vigour. He soon made a name for himself with his eclectic, widely influenced instrumentation and style, drawing influences from folk and rock to ska and reggae, along with seemingly infinitely-literate lyrics. The 1978 album entitled “This Year’s Model” was the first recorded with his backing band The Attractions and featured more of a hard-rock sound than his earlier material.

Costello’s ambitious 1979 album “Armed Forces” took the band to No. 2 in the UK chart, as did Costello’s most successful single “Oliver’s Army”. This same year Costello found time to produce the debut album for the band The Special, sparking a ska revival.

The early 1980s were a very good time to be an Elvis Costello fan, in which time he released no fewer than nine albums including “Trust”, “Imperial Bedroom” and “Punch the Clock” and consistently toured with The Attractions, before tensions were raised between Costello and bassist Bruce Thomas, which caused a split by 1986.

The majority of Costello’s work since the split has been as a solo artist, defined by his smart and diverse wordplay, genre-blurring music style and inherent passion. Costello has been awarded numerous awards throughout his career including a grammy, two Brit Award nominations for Best British Male, has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Rolling Stone ranked the band 80th on their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list.

Live reviews

I've been a fan of Elvis Costello's since the Seventies and must have seen him live more than fifty times, in all his different incarnations. It's a widely held view that he's at his best when playing on his own, an

opinion I share.

His Cardiff gig on the tour he'd decided to name, with his trademark wry humour,Detour, was a good example of how one man armed only with a piano, some stringed instruments and a career's worth of great songs can provide great entertainment. The set spanned his whole career, from the likes of 'Red Shoes' to a song from The New Basement Tapes album ('Down On The Bottom').

Along the way there were the hits e.g. 'Oliver's Army' and 'Watching The Detectives' and enough rarely heard songs, like 'Ghost Train', 'Watch Your Step','Love Field' and 'Kinder Murder' to keep Elvis snobs like me happy.

Add a few judiciously-selected covers ('She' and 'Side By Side', among others) and the return of the frontwomen of support band Larkin Poe to much appreciative applause to help rock up the last third of the show, and you had a fine performance.

Pride of place must go, however, to 'Shipbuilding',performed alone at the piano with an intensity that rolled back the years to the time it was written. As always with Elvis, the political side of his character was not left unexplored, both in such songs and his chat between them. Also worth mentioning was the tailoring of the stage set to acknowledge that Elvis was in Wales, the sort of attention to detail which is always appreciated.

Veteran rock icon Elvis Costello has now reached his 60s yet shows no sign of slowing down his relentless touring schedule. Delighting fans globally, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee is considered to be one of the most well known singer/songwriters who has collaborated with a huge amount of stars.

His discography stands at 30 albums so condensing this into a 20 song setlist is a difficult task however the way in which Costello is able to charm a crowd means they remain enthusiastic to whatever he chooses to play. There are of course big cheers for his hit single 'Veronica' which clearly a lot of the audience were hoping he would play. The songwriter delights his fans with tales of years past, the beginnings of his career and his travels around the globe. He also speaks fondly of his supportive musicians and introduces them each to the crowd who cheers them on.

Big finisher 'Watching the Detectives' leaves the crowd cheering and stamping their feet for the reappearance of Elvis. He leads the musicians back onstage and performs a final time before exiting proving he truly is an icon of rock.

Elvis was absolutely spectacular, combining a mix of jovial storytelling and timeless classics marked on a night that all of the New Orleanians in attendance will not soon forget. His video clip of "Papa Costello" aka Ross McManus rocking If I Had A Hammer on BBC television "back in the day" was just plain COOL! To top it all off, he had local R&B legend Alan Tourssaint join him onstage to thoroughly captivate an already grateful audience. My personal favorite was the two singer/songwriters performing Deep Dark Truthful Mirror. The intimate Civic Theatre was the perfect venue for one of the best shows I've seen, since moving to the Big Easy five years ago.

Elvis Costello came to Jazz festival 2014 in Montreal. I am a big fan of his work. I reserved 2 tickets as soon as I could in the new Maison symphonique.

I was amazed with his solo show. Him, by himself playing all his guitars (about 15 different ones) and his voice, deep, true and very melancholic.

Felt swept up my feet when he sang Alison, shipbuilding (with keyboard), everyday I write the book, Peace-love and understanding, etc. I would have sat there for another 3 hours.

Can't wait for him to come back solo or with his band. Amazing man, creator and music industry underdog leader. Bravo Elvis.

Elvis Costello was once again played Glasgow and as usual I attended .

Although I had never seen him in The Armadillo it was a great night.

It was a tour through his greatest hits and a joy with 2 old Attractions band members playing along side him with 2 female backing singers and bass all covered brilliantly.

I did although find Elvis voice somewhat strained at times on certain songs (Which I have never seen happen before).

Finished of with Pump it Up ! And that they did pumped it up until the roof nearly came of the building.

Thanks Elvis.

Jesus Christ on a broomstick this show was painful. Elvis sounds like something wounded. Long, incoherent, rambling stories may have been a saving grace from his singing. No crowd atmosphere - people seemed to be chatting. I left after 45 minutes. And no - it could not have gotten better. The main sounds like he is in the painful pushing throes of constipation.

Kingsbury Hall was the perfect venue to see Elvis...Larkin Poe was the opening act and they were very talented...Elvis was amazing...only had to wait 39 years to see him and the wait was worth it...basically a "Storytellers" type show...great visuals and he was in fine form...I would highly recommend as my wife and I came out totally satisfied with the show...

Such an intimate evening! Can you imagine how it feels to have Mr Costello behind your seat singing Allison to you? Now i can! Genius! Nice set up, i only missed Oliver's Army, but such a good set list. You don't miss anyone, he's good enough by himself playing acoustic. GREAT EXPERIENCE

I have been listening to him since i was 14.my favorite line is "who put these fingerprints on my imaginstion.i have a lot of favorite singer song writers, but find him the most versatile.if i could pick one person to sit with in a pub, and talk it would be him.di

Musically good. Visually good.

Too loud for the Ryman.

Elvis Costello was obviously focussed on his new album as he didn't play many hits.

Certainly not my favourites: Oliver's Army, Good Year for the Roses, Veronica or I can't stand up for falling down.

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Refusing to be Fat Elvis

Jon Bon Jovi was interviewed for Thank You, Goodnight .

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora in Thank You, Goodnight

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
