Eris is one of largest the dwarf planets in our solar system. It's about the same size as Pluto, but is three times farther from the Sun.

Quick Facts

A day on Eris is 25.9 hours

Artists concept of Eris and Dysnomia far from the Sun

A year on Eris is equal to 557 Earth years.

The radius of Eris is about 722 miles, or 1,163 kilometers.

Eris has one moon called Dysnomia.

eris travel & events

The discovery of Eris help trigger a debate in the scientific community that led to the International Astronomical Union's decision in 2006 to clarify the definition of a planet. Pluto, Eris, and other similar objects are now classified as dwarf planets.

Eris was discovered on Jan. 5, 2005, from data obtained on Oct. 21, 2003, during a Palomar Observatory survey of the outer solar system by Mike Brown, a professor of planetary astronomy at the California Institute of Technology; Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory; and David Rabinowitz of Yale University.

These time-lapse images of a newfound dwarf planet in our solar system, formerly known as 2003 UB313 or Xena, and now called Eris, were taken using the Samuel Oschin Telescope at the Palomar Observatory.

Eris: Significant Dates

  • Jan 8, 2005: Scientists announce they have discovered a Pluto-sized world billions of miles beyond the orbit of Neptune. They nickname the tiny world Xena after a fictional television character. The discovery reignites a debate about the definition of a planet.
  • Sep 2005: Scientists announce Xena has a tiny moon, which they nickname Gabriella after Xena's sidekick on a television show about a warrior princess.
  • Aug 26, 2006: After months of debate about how to classify Eris, the International Astronomical Union votes to change the definition of a planet. The new ruling reclassifies Pluto as a dwarf planet and reduces the number of planets in the solar system to eight. Both Eris and the asteroid Ceres are also classified as dwarf planets.
  • Sep 14, 2006: The International Astronomical Union (IAU) announces that the dwarf planet known as Xena will be called Eris, after the Greek goddess of discord. Eris's moon is named Dysnomia, the demon goddess of lawlessness and the daughter of Eris. This is fitting since the discovery of Eris led to the demotion of Pluto from planet to dwarf planet amidst continuing debate in the science community and the public.

Originally designated 2003 UB 313 – and nicknamed for the television warrior Xena by its discovery team – Eris is named for the ancient Greek goddess of discord and strife. The name fits since Eris remains at the center of a scientific debate about the definition of a planet.

Potential for Life

The surface of Eris is extremely cold, so it seems unlikely that life could exist there.

Size and Distance

With an equatorial diameter of about 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers), Eris is about 1/5 the width of Earth. Eris, like Pluto, is a little smaller than Earth's Moon. If the Earth were the size of a nickel, Eris would be about as big as a popcorn kernel.

From an average distance of 6.3 billion miles (10 billion kilometers), Eris is about 68 astronomical units away from the Sun. One astronomical unit (abbreviated as AU), is the distance from the Sun to Earth. From this distance, it takes sunlight more than nine hours to travel from the Sun to the surface of Eris.

Orbit and Rotation

Eris takes 557 Earth years to make one trip around the Sun. The plane of Eris' orbit is well out of the plane of the solar system's planets and extends far beyond the Kuiper Belt, a zone of icy debris beyond the orbit of Neptune.

As Eris orbits the Sun, it completes one rotation every 25.9 hours, making its day length similar to ours.

Eris has a very small moon called Dysnomia. Dysnomia has a nearly circular orbit lasting about 16 days. This moon is named after Eris' daughter, the demon goddess of lawlessness.

Dysnomia and other small moons around planets and dwarf planets allow astronomers to calculate the mass of the parent body. Dysnomia plays a role in determining how comparable Pluto and Eris are to each other.

Eris has no known rings.

Dwarf planet Eris is a member of a group of objects that orbit in a disc-like zone beyond the orbit of Neptune called the Kuiper Belt. This distant realm is populated with thousands of miniature icy worlds, which formed early in the history of our solar system about 4.5 billion years ago. These icy, rocky bodies are called Kuiper Belt objects, transneptunian objects, or plutoids.

We know very little about Eris' internal structure.

Eris most likely has a rocky surface similar to Pluto. Scientists think surface temperatures vary from about -359 degrees Fahrenheit (-217 degrees Celsius) to -405 degrees Fahrenheit (-243 degrees Celsius).

The dwarf planet is often so far from the Sun that its atmosphere collapses and freezes, falling to the surface as snow. As it gets closest to the Sun in its faraway orbit, the atmosphere thaws.

Magnetosphere

Nothing is known about Eris' magnetosphere.

What is a Planet?

Pluto fans thought they knew. Then Eris entered the chat.

International travel to return to Rockford airport

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Those looking to go on an international vacation will soon be able to fly out of Rockford once again.

From passenger numbers to cargo success and possible redevelopment, the Chicago Rockford...

On Wednesday, the Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) announced the return of nonstop flights to destinations in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. Passenger flights to international destinations from Rockford were stalled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

“Ever since the pandemic drastically changed passenger travel, we’ve been working with ALG Vacations to bring their Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flights back to our airport so we can further serve people in our region,” said RFD Executive Director Zack Oakley. “The Rockford market is enthusiastic about travel – that’s something we’re listening to, advocating for, and working tirelessly on so RFD can provide more great travel opportunities to our community. We hope to continue offering more destinations in the years to come,” he added.

The Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flights on GlobalX Airlines will begin on Jan. 24, 2025. The flights will be offered by Apple Vacations and its sister companies, Funjet Vacations and Travel Impressions. Oakley explains that so long as customers keep booking these destinations, they’ll work with Apple Vacations to keep them.

“Flights that go out of Rockford, for the most part, are usually on the fuller side, usually 90 to 92 percent full. We’ve got great community support on these flights, so we just have to continue that,” Oakley says. “The fastest way to add more flights is to show support for the flights we already have.”

“Rockford has been a successful market for vacation companies like our Apple Vacations, Funjet Vacations, and Travel Impressions brands for many years, and we’re excited to bring this service back to RFD for 2025,” said Ray Snisky, group president at ALG Vacations.

John Sturm, the president of Lindstrom Travel , believes this is an opportunity for RFD passenger flights to reclaim levels they haven’t seen since the pandemic. He says the destinations chosen give travelers a variety of destinations to choose from giving them the chance for much more than a just a beach vacation.

“You only have like a two-month time to go there so we’ll be hearing shortly from people” Sturm says. “I think once they start promoting it people are really going to start going.”

The airport released the following flight schedules:

Costa Rica:

  • Fridays, starting January 24, 2025

Cancun, Riviera Maya, Mexico:

  • Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting January 25, 2025

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic:

  • Thursdays and Sundays, starting January 26, 2025

For more information about passenger service at the Rockford airport, visit its website .

Why Tho? I don't want to travel to events with my relative but they won't take 'no' for an answer

  • Published: Jun. 04, 2024, 2:00 p.m.

woman in glasses

Lizzy Acker, Why Tho? advice columnist. Destiny Johnson/The Oregonian

  • Lizzy Acker | The Oregonian/OregonLive

Dear Lizzy,

I appreciated your answering Left Out’s question . I have the opposite problem. Every year, extended relatives plan a trip to get together near where we live (a couple hours away) – they’ve been doing this for about 20 years. It’s sacred for them and I’m happy for them. A few years ago, we had to make an incredibly difficult decision to stop attending these events. Of course, they have a difficult time accepting our choice and they feel hurt that we are not going. It’s painful for us too and we are stuck because they want answers we cannot give. We love them from afar and keep in contact through text occasionally but that’s it. It hurts to know they are struggling to accept our decision but we’re doing what’s best for our family and have no other option. In the past, trying to communicate that has been difficult and painful and misunderstandings have happened. Their next event is coming up and I know they are hoping we will attend. Any advice on what we could say without going into why we’re not going? I’d be grateful for any fresh ideas. This is new territory for all involved.

Staying Away

Dear Staying Away,

This is a tricky question, made a little trickier by the fact that I am not quite sure why you decided not to see your family anymore (the fact that I can’t ask follow-up questions is the one downside to my otherwise perfect anonymous question form ).

I really wish I knew why you made this decision, and I am a bit flummoxed by this: “They want answers we cannot give.”

Do you know why you made the choice not to go? Why can’t you tell them honestly? Why the pronouncement that you can’t ever see them again?

The question you need to ask yourself is: Do you want to have any relationship with these people at all?

I don’t think texting them a few times a year is working, for them or you. Why you are doing that? If you want to have a relationship with them, you might need to put in a little more effort, either by coming up with a compromise that involves actually seeing them or telling them why you can’t come, this time, instead of making it a forever thing.

If you’re open to compromise, you could ask if they will meet you for one meal at a neutral third location halfway between where you live and where they are staying.

Or, if you don’t want to see them at all, next time they invite you, you can respond with: “Thanks so much for the invite! So sorry we won’t be able to make it this time!”

And that’s it! You absolutely shouldn’t get into a fight over text. If they ask why, you can say, “We have something else going on that weekend.”

No need to make a grand pronouncement about how you are planning to never ever see them ever again, just say you’re busy.

If you don’t want to maintain the relationship, stop engaging with them. Slow fade. They might not like it, but you are not required to keep in touch with every aunt, uncle or cousin you have.

Here’s the thing: You do not have to maintain this relationship. I mean, there is no law mandating you maintain any relationship at all but especially not one with a semi-distant relative you don’t want to hang out with. I have cousins and aunts and uncles I love that I don’t even text once a year! I’m busy!

Along with that, you also don’t need to tell them you can never see them again, unless you are trying to make a statement about some behavior you want to change, in which case you’re going to need to tell them what that behavior is and not just hope they learn their lesson.

If I were you, I would just make excuses, not spend much time texting them, and send a holiday card once a year.

Have a burning question? Send me an email at [email protected] or tweet @lizzzyacker ! Or, if you want to ask me a question with total anonymity, use this Google form .

World War II veterans travel to France to commemorate 80th anniversary of D-Day

Updated on: June 1, 2024 / 9:10 PM EDT / CBS/AP

More than 60 veterans of World War II took off Friday from Dallas to France, where they will take part in ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The group ranges from 96 to 107 years old, according to American Airlines, which is flying them first to Paris. The flight is one of several that are taking veterans to France for the commemoration.

The group will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery, visit the Eiffel Tower and join in a daily ceremony known as le Ravivage de la Flamme, which honors fallen French service members at the Arc de triomphe.

D-Day 80th Anniversary

They then head to the Normandy region for events that include wreath-laying ceremonies on Omaha and Utah Beaches, two of the landing sites for the Allied forces.

Almost 160,000 Allied troops, 73,000 from the United States, landed at Normandy on June 6, 1944, in a massive amphibious operation designed to break through heavily fortified German defenses and begin the liberation of Western Europe.

A total of 4,415 Allied troops were killed on D-Day itself, according to the Necrology Project , including about 2,500 Americans. More than 5,000 were wounded.

The group traveling from Dallas includes six Medal of Honor recipients from wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam who wish to honor the World War II veterans.

There are also two Rosie the Riveters, representing women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war.

Hundreds of thousands of military women from Allied nations also worked in crucial noncombat roles such as codebreakers, ship plotters, radar operators and cartographers.

There are various ceremonies to commemorate the day in France and to thank veterans, some of whom will make the long trans-Atlantic journey despite advanced age, fatigue and physical difficulties.

"We will never forget. And we have to tell them," Philippe Étienne, chairman of commemoration organizer Liberation Mission, told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, with only approximately 100,000 American World War II veterans still alive, the National World War II Museum in New Orleans is working to preserve their memories.

To reach new generations, the museum sends course programs to schools across the country, and has immersive exhibits like one about the Pacific War.

"I think that story is vital for them in the future," Michael Arvites, a teacher at Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, told CBS News. "In a world that is ever changing, that has threats that are new, and some threats that are old."

Steve Ellis served on an invasion landing craft in the Pacific during World War II, and recently shared his stories with seniors from Holy Cross High.

"That first time in combat, do you remember being nervous, or do you feel like your training had prepared you for that moment, or what were your feelings going into that?" one student asked.

"For me, and I think most of my contemporaries, when we're in combat, no — not nervous at all, just doing our jobs," Ellis responded.

— Barry Petersen contributed to this report.
