Great service on Board The Avalon Vista with a very caring and friendly crew. We felt very welcomed at all times and were not pressured into taking any of the excursions although we nevertheless did take the opportunity if found interesting. We will definitely go on another cruise with Avalon as we were very satisfied with the value for money experience

Martina was an excellent tour guide and Florin was a great driver! I always knew what we were doing, time and place to meet. Felt safe in the bus, he was an excellent and safe driver! The tour was fun and we saw some beautiful and wonderful places. The only place I wasn't too fond of was the place in Germany we stayed at. Other than that all the accommodations ere great!

Our tour guide Steve was great! Incredibly informative and seasoned. Majority of the tour & the tour options were excellent! Wish we had slightly better rooms(quality of room & distance to main sights) even though this was a budget trip. Transportation on coach bus was comfortable enough. Wish we could have taken the train for parts of it to save time on the road & leave more time to venture.

What people love about black forest tours.

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.
The trip was packed with activities and experiences. The tour director was excellent. Christina was very helpful and friendly. We purchased all the optional experiences and thought all were worthwhile except the last one. We will book a similar trip in the future

The Black Forest

Private day trips to germany’s famous black forest.

With over 6,000 square kilometers of rolling hills, magnificent mountains, and pristine old forests, the Black Forest (Schwarzwald in German) is truly a national treasure. Outdoors enthusiasts traveling to Heidelberg are not to miss out on a visit to this incredible region filled with some of Europe’s best hiking and mountain views.

excursions black forest germany

Germany’s most famous forest is located just 1 hr South of Heidelberg. To get into the Forest we will drive along the famous Black Forest High Road, voted one of the 10 most scenic roads in the whole of Europe. Our first stop will be the Mummelsee, the prettiest lake in the Black Forest. Enjoy the scenery with  a gentle walk around the lake. Then do a 1-2 hr hike up to the  Hornisgrinde,  the highest point in the Northern Black Forest. It is also a legendary viewing point offering panoramic views of the whole area. You can look down on the whole Rhine valley and see Alsace, France in the distance.

excursions black forest germany

To take a break from hiking, we’ll visit a lovely restaurant at the lake’s edge to have lunch and some legendary black forest cake. There is also an excellent gift shop where you can  –  buy some local specialties and enjoy the impressive range of locally made cuckoo clocks. Alternatively we can have lunch in Baiersbronn, the culinary capital of the Black Forest. Here we can eat in the quaint and cosy Bistro of a Michelin Star restaurant. After lunch we can drive on to the town of Freudenstadt,  which has the largest Market Square in the whole of Germany. Or visit some authentic & charming Black Forest villages in the midst of the famous Baden wine region. Drop in on the Hex vom Dasenstein  winery and enjoy their extensive collection of wines.

Another option is to make a short tour of the famous spa town of Baden Baden.

Longer tour to Triberg – site of Germany’s biggest waterfall.

Having had a nice walk through the forest next to the waterfall, we can enjoy the biggest cuckoo clock in the world. Afterwards we can explore the bustling little village of Triberg- home of the Cuckoo clock, and take a look at the amazing range of clocks. Then it will be time for lunch in an authentic local restaurant serving all the specialities of the area, including the excellent smoked ham. On our way home to Heidelberg we can visit the old walled town of Gengenbach. Here we can stroll around the old town, admiring the many old buildings while enjoying the views into the forest in the distance.

Duration: 8 hours Price: €1200 Options: Overnight stays can be arranged

Other Tours

Optional extensions include:

  • Visit to the Black Forest Museum , showing how people have lived here for the last 400 years
  • Visit to the town of Triberg , with Germany’s largest waterfall and cuckoo clock.
  • Visit to Baumwipfelpfad , where you can walk on a 40M raised platform through the forest.

Black Forest Accommodations

There are a lot of hotels and vacation rentals in the Black Forest region. You can stay in a city like Freiburg or Baden-Baden or you in small towns and villages like Triberg, Staufen, Haslach, Gengnenbach, etc. You can also rent apartments and vacation homes in the rural areas of the Black Forest.

If you’re looking for an apartment in the Black Forest,  do a search on Booking.com . We’ve found several great apartments there (less than what we saw on Airbnb for the same apartment) and it’s SO nice to have all hotel and apartment reservations in one place.

Black Forest Tours and Vacation Packages

excursions black forest germany

The Black Forest is a large forested mountain range in southwest Germany . Its name is derived from the darkly covered evergreen hills. It is 160 kilometres/100 miles long from north to south and 50 kilometres/30 miles wide from west to east. As well as the beauty a visit here can bring to German vacations, it also offers active travel opportunities for hikers and bikers.

Black Forest Vacation Highlights

Baden-baden.

The pace is slow and the atmosphere genteel when one visits Baden-Baden, the spa town made famous over time, reaching its most prevalent era in the 19 th Century. It is blessed with a mild climate and numerous hot springs, some of which are harnessed in a number of luxury spas. An example of this is Friedrichsbad in its 170-year-old Roman-style setting. There are also more affordable spas offering therapeutic treatments. Baden-Baden is a good place to use as a centre for exploring the Black Forest on travel to Germany.

Another attractive city, on travel to Germany, is Freiburg, considered to be the gateway to the Black Forest. It has a backdrop of rolling hills and a mountain which lies within city limits. The Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse divides the old town into an eastern half, with the Minster, and a western half with the Town Hall and University. There are numerous small streams which flow through the streets of the old town. Some of the highlights include the 13th-century Swabian Gate with its wall paintings and dioramas, and the Rathausplatz with its statue of a Franciscan friar said to have invented gunpowder in 1359. Also, the Gothic St. Martin's Church, with a beautifully restored interior and cloister and the lovely House of the Whale were built-in 1516 as a residence for Emperor Maximilian.

Black Forest Lakes

Not far from Freiburg is the attractive Lake Titisee formed 10,000 years ago and perfect for swimming, sailing, windsurfing or just strolling along the waterfront. Another picturesque lake is Schluchsee, the largest lake in the Black Forest. Again, water sports of all types and sailing are popular here on German vacations.

Extend your Stay

Consider an additional stopover to your  German vacations  at one of Goway's other European destinations. You can choose from a  Paris vacation , a  London vacation  or an  Amsterdam vacation . This can be done stopping over en route to or from Germany.

Black Forest Experience Road Trip

Visit the fairytale city of Heidelberg and get familiar with the great Black Forest Germany with all the sights and unique things. Finally head along a scenic route to Lake Constance, see Neuschwanstein, the Zugspitze, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, ending up in Munich. This route is a sample and we can customize anything, adding or skipping days, for your convenience. If you have some more days available you can add the Romantic Road and fly back from Frankfurt for example.

By the way, what's scenic route meaning? Roads in Germany are usually very good and on the Autobahn (motorway) you often can drive as fast as you can. When you are in a hurry then you can us the Autobahn free of charge and drive from Frankfurt to Munich in approximately 3,5 hours time. BUT when you enjoy a vacation in Germany then you definitively take your time and explore the cities, the beautiful country sites and scenic routes! This means you take a longer or slower route between two destinations but with much more cultural or natural beauty. What means beautiful in German ? "wunderschön or wunderbar", and that's what this trip will be!

Heidelberg is a charming and picturesque town. It is also ancient. "Heidelberg Man", evidence of the earliest human life in Europe, is, in fact, a 500.000-year-old jawbone found near here. Most recently, Heidelberg was completely rebuilt in the 17th-century baroque style after Louis XIV all but destroyed the province. Visitors first approaching Heidelberg will immediately notice the ruined Heidelberg castle (Schloss), which was built in the typical local red Neckar sandstone over several centuries. In the cellars is the Heidelberger Fass (barrel), which was built in 1751 and holds over 220.000 liters (49.000 gallons).

Heidelberg Old Town City Gate & Castle

The Black Forest is a low mountain range. Up to 1,500 meters, you will find plenty of nature, legendary forests, streams, and lakes, as well as a healthy climate and important towns. Pure relaxation and a wide range of cultural highlights compose a unique mixture for vacationers. Everywhere in the Black Forest, you will have the opportunity to improve your health and your fitness. Also, there are numerous possibilities for outdoor leisure activities all year round.

Festivities and events, as well as numerous museums, give visitors an insight into the region´s history and culture. The "Bollenhut", the red and black hat of the traditional Black Forest costume, as

well as the cuckoo clock have become worldwide famous symbols of this resort area. The cuisine and the caves of the Black Forest offer a wide range of culinary delights, such as crystal clear mineral waters, fruit schnaps, fine wines and the famous Black Forest cherry cake .

Riding the Black forest High Road , a scenic road from Baden-Baden to Titisee via the famous Mummelsee, you should visit the Black Forest Open Air Museum in Gutach. Based around an original farmstead, the 16th-century Vogtsbauernhof is an outstanding example of the region's distinctive vernacular architecture. All the other buildings, which include four more farmsteads, a chapel, a distillery, a bakehouse, smithies, granaries, and mills, have been removed from other locations. Old crafts are demonstrated, and there are displays of local folklore.

Coo Coo Clock House at Ravenna George Höllental (

If you are interested in a Black Forest cuckoo clock then make a stop shortly after Gutach at the house of Black Forest clocks in Hornberg. Or check out the House of 1000 Clocks in Triberg, which offers a huge variety of coo coo clocks . Triberg, the oldest holiday resort of the Black Forest enshrines in it surroundings all the remains of these parts and whoever takes one of the proverbial 1.000 paths around Triberg is enveloped in the charm of its infinite variety. The Triberg waterfalls form the highest waterfall in Germany. The Black Forest Museum offers fascinating displays on the rural culture of the region as it used to be and, to a certain extent, still is. There are collections of traditional dress for both everyday and festive use, cuckoo clocks, music boxes, wood carvings, and furniture, plus an explanatory model of

the Black Forest Railway (Schwarzwaldbahn), a major feat of 19th-century engineering.

Titisee-Neustadt and the nearby lake of Schluchsee lie at the heart of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) region. The "Kneippkur" (Kneipp health cure) is a tradition here and it is for this reason that the Kurmittelhaus (House of Health Cure Medicine) supports all applications of the Kneipp doctrine in addition to other physical therapies. The outdoor and indoor pools ensure swimming pleasure all year round. Lake Titisee is the largest natural lake and one of the most well-known places for tourists in the Black Forest.

An architecturally distinguished town, Schaffhausen is particularly famous for its carved oriel windows and colorful frescoes on house exteriors.

Rhine Falls Schaffhausen

Probably the most picturesque town in Switzerland, the center of Stein am Rhein looks much the same now as it did centuries ago. Wherever you look around the main square, you will find glorious frescoes and superb oriel windows to admire, the only drawback is that many other people will be doing exactly the same. Two excellent museums allow you to see behind the brilliant façades: the Museum Lindwurm, an enchanting house with displays spanning six centuries of local life; and the beautifully preserved St George's Monastery housing

Lake Constance Germany

The two finest examples are the 17th-century Zum Goldenen Ochsen and the 15th/16th-century Zum Ritter. Other highlights include elaborate fountains, a fine 12th-century Romanesque cathedral, and the excellent All Saints Museum. Overlooking the town is the small, but extremely solid, 16th-century Munot Castle. The main attraction, however, lies just outside town, at Neuhausen. Here you can get a splendid view of the Rhine Falls , the largest and most thunderous cascade in Europe.

Stein am Rhein Switzerland

local history and culture collection.

With a built-up area extending into adjoining Switzerland, Konstanz bestrides the River Rhine as it flows from the upper part of Lake Constance into the lower lake. The mostly pedestrianized and well-conserved old town, where Jan Hus was tried and subsequently burnt at the stake, lies on the south bank, with the cathedral the Münster as its focal point. Among the other charming old buildings are the renaissance Rathaus and the Golden Lion House with its cheerfully painted façade. The lakeside, with promenades, harbor, shady gardens, and two surviving watch-towers, is particularly attractive.

Alpine Road Germany

The Deutsche Alpenstrasse ( Alpine Road Germany ) runs for some 500km/310miles from Lake Constance in the west through the Allgäu and Bavarian Alps to the Königssee in the Berchtesgadener Land. This scenic route will show you the gorgeous Castle Neuschwanstein nearby Füssen which must be seen to be believed as well as Oberammergau, which is famous the world over for its Passion Plays, up to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This city is Germany's busiest resort and it offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountain ranges, especially the massive Zugspitze , Germany's highest mountain - 2.963m (9.718 feet).

Visit Breisach – Self Guided Tour

River cruises provide excellent maps for a self guided tour when you visit Breisach. First, walk from the dock up the short but steep lanes to the fortified Old Town. Your first stop is the cathedral of St Stephan’s Minster inside the walls of the Old Town. St Stephan’s Minster was built in the 1200s. From St Stephan’s Minster there are pleasant views over the new town below and the rolling hills of the Kaiser-stuhl. On the square beside the cathedral is the Rathaus Breisach (City Hall) .

In the middle of the small Old Town is the Radbrunnen Tower (Radbrunnenturm) with its strange exterior workings for this early 1100s water well pump. At the far end of the Old Town is the festival area and the Tulla Tower, which forms part of the theater stage. Descending from this end of the Old Town to the Rhine leads to the Rhine Tower (Rheintor) and a pleasant walk back to the river cruise dock.

The town had early Celtic and Roman occupations and was part of the Holy Roman Empire. Breisach has seen a boom in tourism since becoming a standard port of call for river cruises between Basel and Amsterdam. Most of the Rhine River Cruise shore excursions head from Breisach by bus to the Black Forest near Freiburg, Germany. Day trips also visit the picturesque town of Colmar in France. Old Town Breisach is located on an ancient fortified hill top with pleasant views over the rolling hills called the Kaiser-stuhl (Emperor’s seat). The area around the town is excellent for growing grapes and making wine.

This Was My Favorite Town To Stay In When Visiting Germany's Black Forest

Baden-Baden won my heart with its attractions when I was visiting the Black Forest in Germany!

  • The Black Forest is more than just a place from fairy tales, it is a real-life wonderland of history and natural beauty.
  • Baden-Baden offers a blend of relaxation and exploration, from ancient ruins to rejuvenating spa experiences.
  • Whether you visit in summer or winter, Baden-Baden is a charming town with rich history, cultural events, and serene landscapes.

The dense evergreen canopy that towers above the forest floor is what gives the Black Forest its name. Known for its unique tourist attractions , intricate cuckoo clocks, remarkable half-timbered homes, abandoned castles, and charming villages, the Black Forest is a mystical region rich in cultural customs. Not only is the Black Forest a well-known and largest forested German range that served as the setting for many of the Grimm brothers' fairy tales , but it also offers numerous interesting tiny villages to visit.

The mountains and forests in the area are teeming with adventure that made me feel as though I was living out a fairy tale, complete with a happy ending. All the nearby little towns are hospitable and laid-back, but they also have distinct personalities that make them stand out from others. My favorite town to stay in when visiting Germany’s Black Forest was Baden-Baden. I spent two unforgettable days there, enjoying every corner of this small, welcoming German town.

10 Incredibly Preserved Historic Places in Germany That You Won't Believe Exist

My two-day itinerary for staying in baden-baden germany, history, nature, wellness, and much more await you in baden-baden.

For one or two days, Baden-Baden is a fantastic destination to visit. If you just have one day in Baden-Baden, you will have the opportunity to take in the highlights of this lovely town.

Day 1: Dig Into The History and Beauty Of This German Town

I started my first day in Baden-Baden, one of the best German towns venturing into the past. I lost myself in the ancient splendor of Hohenbaden Castle , marveling at its centuries-old ruins and scaling its tower walls for captivating views overlooking the town.

On foot, I navigated the journey to the castle with excitement, extending my exploration into the surrounding Battert Nature Reserve , where scenic lookout points await discovery.

Later, I went on a tranquil stroll along Lichtentaler Allee , which offers respite from the hustle and bustle, as I meandered through verdant parkland, enveloped by the scent of seasonal blooms.

In the afternoon, I found myself captivated by the labyrinthine streets, adorned with cobblestones and historic fountains of Baden-Baden's enchanting Old Town . Delighting in the exclusive offerings of wine shops and artisan boutiques, I indulged in the local delicacy of Black Forest gâteau, savoring each decadent bite amidst my favorite Black Forest town's charming ambiance.

Adjacent to the Old Town, the attractive Baden-Baden Casino enticed me to explore its storied halls and perhaps try my luck at the tables.

Baden-Baden Casino has a dress code and strict entry regulations!

Day 2: Time To Take Care Of Myself

Baden-Baden is the most well-known spa town in the Black Forest. For over 145 years, the renowned Friedrichsbad Spa has been the focal point of the Black Forest's spa tradition. Housed within a Renaissance-style edifice, the spa offers 17 distinct sections where you can experience complete relaxation.

Alternatively, Caracalla Spa is ideal if you prefer a more contemporary experience, with its spacious outdoor areas and lovely gardens. I chose to spend a few hours in Caracalla. It was my first time bathing in a thermal spa, and I can assure you, it won’t be the last!

The tranquil atmosphere and rejuvenating thermal waters offered an unparalleled sense of relaxation.

Visit the genuine Roman Baths to learn about the history of Baden-Baden's spa culture. These ancient baths are located beneath the Friedrichsbad spa's parking lot! With a history spanning more than two millennia, these Roman baths are among Germany's oldest bathing remains.

Before leaving my favorite German Black Forest town, I decided to take in some of the most breathtaking views of Baden-Baden and the surroundings of Merkur Mountain. At 668 meters above sea level , the mountain is accessible via funicular or hiking ascent.

Though the Merkur Mountain funicular is the steepest funicular train in Europe , I reached the top in a couple of minutes. There, a restaurant and a picnic and barbecue area may be found, in addition to many hiking routes and a kid-friendly playground. Paragliding is another way to see Merkur Mountain and the beauty of this area!

Why Germany Has The Best Spas (& Which Ones You Should Visit)

Is baden-baden worth visiting, not only is summer wonderful in this german town, but winter is also a wonderland.

Baden-Baden is well worth visiting. Once hailed as the summer town of Europe, it retains its splendor throughout the year, drawing visitors with its timeless beauty and abundance of attractions. The town's picturesque landscape, adorned with Belle Époque houses and serene rivers, creates an idyllic setting for relaxation and exploration. Its reputation as a hub for health and wellness resorts further enhances its appeal, offering rejuvenation amidst natural splendor.

Even during winter, Baden-Baden maintains its charm, presenting a quieter ambiance and more affordable prices, making it an inviting destination for travelers seeking a break from bustling city life. The Black Forest town's thermal baths and spa facilities provide warmth and comfort, offering a refuge from the chilly weather. I, personally, recommend visiting this wonderful Black Forest town in December. You will enjoy exploring the Christmas markets, and the restaurant decorations will be like nowhere else, giving you holiday and fairytale vibes!

Beyond its tranquil ambiance and therapeutic offerings, Baden-Baden has a rich cultural heritage, with historic landmarks and cultural events adding depth to its whimsical ambiance. Visitors can explore the town's vibrant arts scene, explore its museums and galleries, or simply wander through its charming streets lined with boutiques and cafés.

Whether basking in the summer sun or embracing the tranquility of winter, Baden-Baden promises an unforgettable experience, inviting visitors to unwind, rejuvenate, and discover the timeless beauty of this enchanting town situated in the heart of the mystical Black Forest.

What Is Baden-Baden, Germany Known For?

Thermal bath, opera house, and christmas market.

Baden-Baden is renowned for its array of attractions, including its iconic thermal baths, Germany's largest opera house and concert hall , and enchanting parks and gardens.

Among its seasonal delights, the Baden-Baden Christmas market shines as a highlight. Germany has many most beautiful markets , and Baden-Baden's is a strong contender. It transforms the town into a winter wonderland, offering visitors a magical experience like no other.

From festive stalls brimming with holiday delights to the twinkling lights adorning the charming streets, the Christmas market exudes an enchanting ambiance that captivates the senses and warms the heart. Whether indulging in traditional treats or admiring artisanal crafts, the market promises a joyous celebration of the holiday season amid the historic splendor of Baden-Baden.

Anti-tesla protesters attempt to storm german factory, clash with cops, anti-tesla german protesters try storming factory ... thwarted by cops in riot gear.

Hundreds of protesters attempted to storm Tesla's factory near Berlin Friday ... and CEO Elon Musk has already called out the demonstrators -- who got into an ugly clash with cops.

German police confirmed they stopped hundreds of activists from accessing Tesla's production site in Grunheide ... after social media footage went viral showing protesters dressed in black charging the factory.

Check it out ... the protesters hold hands as they make their way through the woods and an open field, facing off against police decked out in riot gear. The cops even utilize pepper spray to deter protesters from pursuing the factory.

Ole Becker -- a rep for Disrupt Tesla, the group that organized the protest -- gave insight into the protesters' mission ... advocating for public transportation over individual vehicles. He adds ... "Companies like Tesla are happy to destroy habitats for their own profit."

Elon, for his part, shut down claims the demonstrators successfully accessed the factory. He shared on X ... "This is fake news. Protesters did not manage to break through the fence line. There are still 2 intact fence lines all around. Note, this is 'National Protest Week' in Germany, so there are a lot of protests for many different reasons."

He added ... "Why do the police let the left-wing protestors off so easily?"

This isn't the first time Elon has faced off against activists ... others have been protesting in the forest since February over the factory's water consumption and decision to cut trees in order to expand operations.

Black Forest Tours News

Rhine River Cruise – Private Shore Excursion

Many of the Rhine River Cruises offer shore excursions to the Black Forest or Alsace region from the ports in Basel, Breisach or Strasbourg. But instead of joining the regular (cattle-car) bus tours run by the cruise ship company taking you to the ‘Cuckoo Clock Village’ which is set-up just for the cruise ship company, many people prefer a (private) guided tour. The advantages: you get to do and see things large bus groups can’t. You can void the most touristy places – if you want to. With us you can get off-the-beaten path and go where the locals go. And you can ask me as many questions as you like.

Meeting Point

We meet you at the cruise ship port in Breisach – this is where our tours start/end. One thing to keep in mind – Breisach is a bit of a drive from the Black Forest, so depending on how we lay out the tour we will have anywhere from 45-90 minute driving time to get to the Black Forest

Half Day or All Day Tour

Depending on your ship’s departure time in the evening a Half Day Tour might be all you can do. But no matter how many hours you have to spend in our area, we try to create the perfect day for you.

How many people?

  • The minimum number of people in your private group is 4.
  • The maximum number you can bring is 15.

What’s included? And what is not?

  • Private Black Forest tour with a guide, driver & vehicle
  • We meet you at your cruise ship in Breisach
  • Our Guides: Professional, English-speaking, Certified by the Black Forest Park Association, Members of the German National Tourist Guide Association (BVGD)
  • Our Vehciles: Safe and Clean Vehicles, all vehicles pass strict mechanical inspection by the German TÜV (Technical Security Association), special passenger transport insurance, air-conditioning, non-smoking, mobile phone charger on board, umbrellas on board, bottled water on board, child safety seats, parking fees included, tolls and other road fees included, distance & fuel costs included
  • Not included: lunch costs & entrance fees

Questions? Interested in touring on a private tour of the Black Forest? Contact us!
