Explore New Zealand on a Flying Kiwi tour

I feel really bad as I went on this trip a few years ago however, since the pandemic, I've seen images of NZ and it reminded me of my amazing experience. I really can't praise Flying Kiwi highly enough. Everyone from the staff who helped me with my online booking to everyone throughout the 3 week trip. You really feel like a family, everyone is so nice and welcoming. I have too many highlights to mention. NZ is one of the most breathtaking places I've ever visited. When we are past the Covid-19 pandemic please book a place and go. You won't regret it.

Matthew Gray, Summer Blast South Island Tour, 2018

Travel Tips

Suitcase and globe icon

New Zealand is known for having all four seasons in a day, so we recommend packing layers of all-weather clothing. Please keep in mind luggage is restricted to 20kgs per person. For any excess luggage you will need to arrange storage at your own cost.

Knife and fork food icon

Breakfast will be provided each day of the tour and you are free to bring any snacks on-board the vehicle as you wish. You will also have at least one included dinner during your tour.

Hand holding passport icon

Visa & Insurance

You may be required to apply for a visa to enter New Zealand, so follow the link below to see if you'll need one. Insurance is not included in the price of your tour. We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance before you travel with us.

Pen and paper icon

New Zealand Traveller Declaration

All travellers to New Zealand are required to fill out a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD). This service is free and helps to collect travel, customs, immigration, and biosecurity information.

atm machine icon

Please make sure to budget extra for activities as they will be your biggest expense whilst travelling NZ. We recommend around $10-$20 for lunch and $20-$40 for dinners. Visa and Mastercard are accepted around NZ and we’ll be able to stop at ATMs.

Sun and UV icon

Be Sun Smart

The sun is strong here in New Zealand, so if you are planning to be out in the sun for more than 15 minutes, slip on a hat and some sunscreen. Sandflies can be a nuisance in a few locations, so we also recommend carrying some insect repellent with you.

Where To Stay

Tour Activities

As you travel around New Zealand there will be heaps to see and do. You will also have the choice of a variety of optional activities. Don’t feel limited to these options, just chat with your Guide and they will be happy to make recommendations and get you booked into any activity you are interested in! All activities are optional. What's wonderful about this is that it puts you in the driver's seat to craft your own adventure. You get to choose which activities you'd like to include in your tour, or perhaps opt for some free time to explore the area at your own pace, like embarking on a scenic hike.

As part of making the tour zero-stress, your guide will handle the bookings of all of your activities for you whilst on the road, so all you have to do is decide what to tick off your bucket list first.

We hold allocations on the most popular activities to ensure that you don’t miss out on anything whilst on tour or to pre-book your activities.

Amazing Way to Travel

Had the best month travelling New Zealand on the Kiwi bus. The drivers were really helpful and gave great advice when it came to activities and what there is to see at each location. The activities on offer were all really great and even better that we received a discount for being on the Kiwi bus. Its a really sociable way of travelling which really adds to the whole experience and I have made some amazing memories with great people. — Alicia (UK)

Good Fun, Different Experience!

I was really happy that I hadn't had to look up activities up by myself and Kiwi Experience always gave us good discounts. — Jelena (Germany)

Absolutely Amazing

I bought my kiwi tour tentatively as I was nervous about travelling on my own, it turns out it was the best thing I could do. The drivers are informative and fun, you meet people from all over the world and you see one of the most beautiful countries imaginable. — Joey (UK)

Fantastic Experience and Life-Long Friends

This was one the best experiences of my life. You'll meet so many people and make some friends for life... No one has a bad attitude and most are solo travellers. — Ronnie (USA)

Most Amazing Trip of My Life

The whole time in bus were just as fun as when we were visiting those attractions, we were so lucky to have Ben as our driver, we sing, laugh and joke all the time. Overall, I can’t explain it in details but you have to go on a trip with Kiwi Experience to truly understand how extraordinary it is. — Greyson (Singapore)

Thoroughly recommend

We booked a half day tour and enjoyed a lovely Sunday morning with Mitch. He was friendly and knowledgeable, with nice mix of LOTR, Weta and local information. We would definitely use this company again if we find ourselves in Wellington.

Excellent LOTR Tour

Lester, was extremely knowledgeable about the filming locations and was able to offer in depth detail about iconic scenes that I had never heard before. If you are LOTR fan this is a must do in Wellington!

Do this Tour with Tour Guide Lester

Absolut amazing! This Tour is so much fun, you can learn many things about lord of the rings and also others. Our Tour Guide Lester was the best!

Nice city tour

The guide provided lots of interesting information. A good way to see the main attractions of the city, especially when visiting for the first time.

Highly Recommended

What an excellent tour. Our driver/guide was full of interesting information about Wellington and NZ in general. The tour took in all the key locations many of which we would not have seen by ourselves - the views from the top of the hill were fabulous.

Lord of the Rings Scenic Explorer - Day 5

Leaving Ohakune you will first reach the military town of Waiouru, home to the National Army Museum an incredible collection of New Zealand’s military history and a memorial to its servicemen. Heading south you pass through the rural towns of Taihape, Mangaweka and Bulls before arriving on the Kapiti Coast. The coastal seaside towns of Paraparaumu, Paekakariki and Plimmerton are worth a short detour before arriving into the capital city of Wellington. Plan to take most of the day for this drive.

Taking a night tour of Zealandia wildlife eco-sanctuary is an unforgettable experience and one that comes highly recommended. A conservation success and safe haven for some of New Zealand's rarest native animals, Zealandia is home to many remarkable species of birds, reptiles and insects living wild within a beautiful 225 hectare (one square mile) valley, just 10 minutes from the central city. Your tour begins with an interactive exhibition before you walk through the gates of Zealandia predator-exclusion fence into the sanctuary. Your guide will then lead you on a torch-light walk through the native New Zealand bush. Possible sights include Kiwi foraging on the forest floor, tuatara hunting for food, glowworms shining, tiny Maud Island frogs in their enclosure, pateke (brown teal) ducks feeding at night and kaka (parrots) coming in to roost. Zealandia is one of the best places to see kiwi in the wild. Over 100 of these nocturnal birds live freely in their natural environment inside the safety of the sanctuary valley, so your chances of seeing one are high!

Lord of the Rings Scenic Explorer - Day 6

With some of the best Lord of the Rings tours Wellington has to offer, you will not be disappointed on this tour. You'll visit local filming locations, view a short documentary showing the filmmaking exploits of Peter Jackson and his remarkable team and be guided through the sights and sounds of the Weta Workshop in Miramar. This is followed by a fascinating 'Window into the workshop' exhibition, showing film props and weaponry, with the artists themselves describing how the artefacts were created.

Wellington, home to New Zealand’s centre of government has a largely cosmopolitan feel. Often referred to as ‘mini-Melbourne’, this (self described) windy city is a melting pot of art, culture, food and fashion. Quirky laneway bars, underground art shows, and hipster eateries make up its inner city vibe, while a host of sandy beaches outside the urban bustle bring a cheerful holiday feel. Take a turn on the boardwalk en-route to Te Papa , New Zealand's national museum or catch a historic cable car from Lambton Quay and soak up the city sights. Wander the boutiques on Cuba St and check out the aptly named ‘Beehive’ off Parliament House. Play hobbit for day and book a tour through Weta Workshop, the Oscar Award winning design studio for Lord Of The Rings. If eating is your thing, drive an hour out of town to Martinborough and experience some of the region's best food and wine. For those interested in New Zealand's native species, a trip to Zealandia is a must, the world's first fully fenced eco-sanctuary. Then kick off your evening in style - search ‘Metro Eats’ to choose from a plethora of the city’s best restaurants to dine.

Lord of the Rings Scenic Explorer - Day 7

The 92 km journey between Wellington and Picton takes around 3 hours and has been described as 'one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world'. Leaving Wellington Harbour you pass many interesting points such as Pencarrow Head on top of which is New Zealand's oldest lighthouse (1859). Red Rocks is home to a seal colony and Oterangi Bay is the site which recorded the country's highest ever wind speed of 268 kph (167 mph). From the Cook Strait spectacular views of the Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island can be enjoyed and dolphins and many sea birds are often seen. Around one hour of the cruise takes you through the Marlborough Sounds and this region of bush covered mountains, small islands, crystal clear waters and secluded bays offer remarkable photographic opportunities. The final leg of your cruise travels through Queen Charlotte Sound before coming to an end in the picturesque town of Picton.

Immerse yourself in Sir Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' when you take this Hobbit Barrel Run River Kayaking trip. Journeying down the Beautiful Pelorus River you'll see actual filming locations including the rocks where Bilbo Baggins stood, the place where the dwarfs exited the barrels and the exact location where Kili was shot. Not just for Lord of the Rings fans, this spectacular kayaking trip will enthral anyone wanting to experience the beauty of New Zealand's rivers.

Your accommodation: Harbour View Motel Picton

The road hugs the shore for around 50 kilometres and offers many chances to view native wildlife such as seabirds and New Zealand fur seals. To the east is the turquoise waters of the South Pacific Ocean and to the west the towering Kaikoura Ranges. Kaikoura Township is a bustling place with many cafes, restaurants and shops, but the main reason for visiting here is the wildlife. Whale Watch Kaikoura is New Zealand's only marine-based whale watching company offering visitors an exciting up-close encounter with the Giant Sperm Whale at all times of the year. Depending on the season you may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales. England fly-half George Ford

George Ford has been ruled out of England's tour to Japan and New Zealand because of an Achilles injury, rugby chiefs announced on Sunday.

Ford, 31, started at fly-half throughout this year's Six Nations but, having completed the club season with Sale, it has been decided he needs time to recover from the pre-existing condition.

"Naturally we're disappointed that George won't be with us in Japan and New Zealand, but, following specialist medical advice, and in consultation with George himself, we have decided this is the best course of action," said England head coach Steve Borthwick.

"George is a big part of the England team and is an excellent professional who I know will rehab diligently to ensure he gets himself right as soon as he can."

England face Japan in Tokyo on June 22 before heading to New Zealand to play two Tests against the All Blacks.
