Saguenay Quebec Port Guide

You’ll find a hidden getaway about 120 miles south of Quebec City in Saguenay, where rows of multi-colored homes look beyond to rolling hillsides and curl around the beautiful St. Lawrence River. While on a cruise to Saguenay, Quebec, Canada, book a tour of the town’s biggest attraction—An incredible fjord stretching 60 miles long with dramatic cliffs jutting a thousand feet into the air. The Saguenay Fjord National Park is a can’t-miss day trip (or longer) for ziplining, camping, hiking, or other outdoor pursuits.

The landscape will definitely awe you, but so will the city’s charm, where sites like the Pulperie de Chicoutimi or the Cathedral of Saint François-Xavier give a sense of the community and its history. Saguenay is your introduction to a quieter, off-the-beaten path Quebec. Whale watch along the St. Lawrence River or enjoy poutine from a patio in Chicoutimi. As a stop on a Canada and New England Cruise , Saguenay could be called a respite, an oasis of culture and nature, before hitting the remote, isolated wilderness of Northern Quebec.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Saguenay, you can discover the beauty of Quebec on one of our luxury Quebec City cruises . Browse our luxury cruises to Quebec City below.

Originally, Saguenay was a colonial French trading town divided into three main boroughs: La Baie, Chicoutimi, and Jonquière. Today’s Saguenay encompasses all those cities into one municipality. Blast From the Past

If this isn't enough, Saguenay has two other historical attractions. The Petite Maison Blanche (small white house) Museum is a Saguenay landmark that survived one of Canada's worst natural disasters — a flood in 1947. Today it's a museum with exhibitions on three floors, as well as a souvenir shop. Then there's Val-Jalbert Historical Village, which resembles a 1920s pulp mill town. It's complete with historic buildings, like a convent school and general store, as well as costumed townsfolk.

More about Saguenay, Canada Points of Interest

The picturesque town of Saguenay is actually the union of a number of cities and townships and serves as the gateway to the majestic Saguenay Fjord, an area rich in history and culture.

Carved by ancient glaciers, the fjord ranks as the most southerly fjord in the northern hemisphere. Four species of whales and 54 species of fish call this 65-mile-long, two-mile-wide fjord their home.

The art of traditional glass blowing will be demonstrated by an artist glassmaker in his workshop

Area artisans create mohair garments in the traditional manner using wool from their own angora goats. Watch how mohair is processed from raw wool to hand-made fabric using 19th-century production methods and time-honored skills.

Once a fur trading post, Chicoutimi would later gain fame as a prosperous pulp and paper manufacturing town. Evidence of its treasured past can be seen at the old Pulp Mill, a National Historic Site.

Known as "the City Built in 135 Days," Arvida was one of Canada's first pre-planned model towns. Built in 1927, the town's unique downtown area is now listed as a National Historic Site.

Not only is La Baie renowned as the entryway to the magnificent Saguenay Fjord National Park but among the area's rolling, green hillsides sits Les Bergeries du Ford farm, noted for its award-winning cheese.

When the Chicoutimi River overflowed its banks and flooded the region in 1996, this humble home survived the devastation and raised the hopes of many. Preserved as a historical park, an adjacent museum commemorates the flood.

Cruising the majestic saguenay fjord in quebec, canada’s autumn colors.

Saguenay Fjords Canada Waterfall

An absolutely enchanting way to see the Autumn foliage colors is on a Saguenay Fjord cruise in Quebec. The breathtaking granite walls, enswathed by the trees, engulfs you in misty coves of pristine and colorful wilderness.  Lush greens let go into waterfalls and golden hues as you cruise into the mystery.

IMG_6509

Located in Quebec, Canada the Saguenay Fjord is one of the most southerly fjords in the northern hemisphere.  Also, this 65-mile (105 km) long fjord is one of the longest in the world. This fjord was carved by glaciers in the Ice Age.  Majestically, its granite cliffs soar to an average height of 490 feet (150 metres), reaching a maximum height of 1.150 feet (350 metres). In contrast, the water plunges to depths of 900 feet below the waterline.  Also, the Saguenay Fjord is a tributary of the Saint Lawrence River, with its head at the City of Saguenay.

This vast 78,900-acre park is also a wonderland for hiking and biking.  Most noteworthy, National Geographic named the trail system at Saguenay Fjord National Park one of the world’s ‘Top Walks and Hikes.”  There is also Chalets nearby for delicious French- Canadian cuisine and accommodations.  In addition, there is a 270-mile cycling route that skirts the Saguenay River. Another way to enjoy the fjords is by kayaking intimately through its water reflections.

IMG_6443

There are 3 main regions to Saguenay Fjord National Park:

Baie Eternite (Eternity bay) -First, this southwest region has the Saguenay Fjord Interpretation Center in the village, Riviere-Eternite.

Baie Sainte Marguerite (St. Margaret Bay) -Secondly, this north region is where the Beluga whales congregate in the bay.  Also, in Sacre-Coeur is the Beluga Interpretation Centre.

Baie du Moulin-a-Baude (Moulin Bay in Baude ) – Thirdly, the eastern region of the park has the Maison des Dunes Interpretation Centre, featuring the sand dunes, ecosystem and wildlife of the park.

IMG_6478

The park’s waters are also home to 4 species of whales, such as, the beluga, blue, fin and minke.  Unfortunately, because of pollution in the Saguenay river, the beluga whale population has significantly declined in this area.  Also, in the waters are Atlantic salmon, Arctic cod, brook trout and seals.

My Amazing Saguenay Fjord Cruise Experience

As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea on cruise lines, I spent an autumn season between New England’s Boston and Quebec City.  We cruised the St. Lawrence River and its tributary to Saguenay as one of our port-of-calls.  Besides cruising through the fjords on the cruise ship, I also took a more intimate excursion on a chartered cruise throughout the fjords.  Most importantly, it was an amphibious tour, in that we not only cruised the waters but also stopped for lunch and hiked trails to iconic viewing points from Saguenay National Park.

It was a misty late September day on my Saguenay Fjord Cruise.  So, this brought on some visibility challenges with bouts of rain showers.  However, the times in between were stunning and mysterious with the whispers of foggy shapes fading through the yellow, orange and red trees along the shorelines.

We cruised close to the iconic Cape Trinity.

Our guides were informative about the geological development of these granite towers.  On the first of the 3 terraces of Cape Trinity is the famous sculpture, “Notre-Dame du Saguenay” or State of our Lady of Saguenay.  This 7.5-meter symbolic statue stands at a height of 180 meters, overlooking the fjord on the south shore of the Saguenay River. This amphibious tour was a nice balance of water and land.  Lastly, we stopped at charming villages, such as, Ste Rose du Nord and L’Anse St-Jean.  Most importantly, it was the best way to connect with the colorful landscapes and get the best panoramic views of the fjord waters and canyon walls.

Overall, Saguenay Fjord Cruise

Overall, there are many moods to this experience depending on the weather and wildlife. I wasn’t fortunate enough to see any whales or seals. Also, it rained for us a lot of the time. However, this wafted gossamers of foggy mystery for our unknown journey. One can only imagine what a bright, clear sunny day would be like amidst the fiery red and golden colors reflecting on calm waters. Either way, cruising Saguenay Fjord is one of the best ways to experience the fall colors in their autumn glory, rain or shine.

Summers here are long and comfortably warm. Winters are a different story. They are very cold and snowy. Over the year, temperatures range from -3°F to 75°F and are rarely below -22°F or above 85°F.

During September and October, the most popular cruising months, it is recommended to bring layers as temperatures can be pleasant (15 degrees Celsius) and comfortable during the day, but cool in the morning and evening (7 degrees Celsius). A waterproof layer is important as there is usually a chance of rain every day.

If you are going to explore the fjord, take a jacket. No matter what the season is, there are stong winds on the fjord.

The currency in Canada is the Canadian dollar. Credit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere. Shops may give you back change in Canadian currency. There is an ATM across the street from the cruise terminal in front of the Au Pavillon Noir restaurant.

For up-to-date currency exchange rates, go to www.xe.com.

Wireless Internet:

Free WiFi and computers are available for use at the Bagotville Wharf cruise pavilion. You will also find WiFi in almost all restaurants and businesses in Saguenay.

French is the primary language in all of Quebec, but English is often spoken in tourist and service areas. Signage will be in French.

Where You Dock in Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Ships will dock or anchor at the Bagotville Wharf in La Baie on the shores of Ha! Ha! Bay. While this may seem an unusual name, it can be traced back to a French term. The “haha” means an unexpected obstacle or a dead end. Early explorers in Canada found plenty of both.

Saguenay sees more than 60,000 cruise passengers per year. The pier has even been visited by the RMS Queen Mary II.

Ships are often met by a show troupe that puts on a performance in pioneer dress and are accompanied by local music.

Tours depart from inside the cruise pavilion, where is free WiFi and computers for passenger use as well as a cafe, local artisan shops and Visitor Information Centre.

Taxis and car rentals are available from the pier.

Check out the live webcam at the cruise ship pier.

Getting Around Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

It is about a five minute walk from the pier to La Baie’s village center. There are shops and places to eat here. This is not a large area, so you should be able to cover the few streets without needing a map. If you’re looking for more of a city-feel with more shops and restaurants, you’ll need other transportation to drive into Chicoutimi.

The buses are the hop-on, hop-off type. There are two Saguenay tours that the bus offers. One will take you to the Fjord museum, a shopping center, and a glass maker and sculpture studio.

The second tour goes to the downtown and cultural area of Chicoutimi. There will be a stop at a cathedral, a regional museum and public market. The buses will run about every 20 minutes when ships are in dock and cost approximately $30pp with tickets available onsite.

The cruise pavilion is the place to book a taxi. There you can also choose a taxi that will tour you around the region or just take you where you want to go.

Rental Cars

Again, the cruise pavilion is the place to rent a car. You will need to be at least 21 years old and present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo driver’s license. You will also need a major credit card. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road.

Shopping In Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

There is no shortage of shopping in Saguenay. The city has five downtown centers, Arvida, Chicoutimi, Jonquiere, Kenogami and La Baie (where the ship docks). Each city center has shopping and boutiques and restaurants. From La Baie to the furthest center of Jonquiere, it is approximately a 30 minute drive.  Chicoutimi is more of a “city” and has the largest number of offerings in one area.

If you’re looking for some souvenirs, much of what the province of Quebec is known for is food related, so keep a look out for local maple syrup, cheese from a fromagerie, sweets and baked goods from a boulangerie, especially a creamy, delicious type of fudge called sucre a la creme, wine and other local alcohol.

Les Galeries de la Baie – 2 kms from pier

This small shopping complex closest to the port, has men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, a bank, liquor store, dollar store, jewelry store, home store and groceries.  There are also often pop-up stores featuring items from local artisans.

Place du Royaume – 17 kms from pier in Chicoutimi

The largest shopping mall in the area, Place du Royaume has brand name and local stores including Walmart, Sephora, Tommy Hilfiger, Old Navy and a food court with McDonalds, KFC and Starbucks.

Route des Artisans

The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Crafts Corporation has created a “craftsmans route” comprised of more than 70 artisans who specialize in different materials such as wood, glass, textiles, metal, ceramic, leather and more.

While many artisans are in the Chicoutimi area, the featured artists that are closest to the port are:

Conception Cuir , a leather artist who makes bags and wood and leather furniture. They are located a 4 minute walk south of the pier on Rue Victoria in La Baie.

L’atelier-boutique a Moi de Moi, does beautiful silkscreen printing on shirts, cushions, bags and much more, all inspired by the nature and animals of the region.

Click this link to a see list of artisans , or here to a list of maps where all the shops are located.

Bon Delices et Peches – 18 km from pier, in Chicoutimi

This delicious shop has been making their own chocolate onsite for 20 years and also offers gelato.  It will be hard to not try one of everything!

Dining In Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Quebec’s cuisine has its roots in 16th century French dishes. Today’s cuisine has been influenced by Quebec’s history of fur trading, the seasonality of ingredients, and what early settlers traded. Poutine is distinctly Canadian and is a mix of fries, gravy and cheese curds. Pea soup, tourtiere (a meat pie), and feves au lard (beans, bacon and molasses) are also dishes that are traditional to the area. Quebec is the largest producer of maple syrup in the world. They have also created over 700 different kinds of cheese. The region also has the mother lode of blueberries, and you will even find them in breakfast sausage. You will find no shortage of restaurants and unique and delicious food in Saguenay.

Know that when ordering in restaurants, if you ask for an entree it is an appetizer in French. A main course is called a plat. Also, “dinner” is often eaten at mid-day, while supper is an evening meal.

Restaurants Close to the Port

Bistro cafe summum la baie – located just outside port, european, north american, vegetarian, french, bbq.

This busy bistro offers delicious breakfast lunches and suppers with local offerings of seafood, cheeses and beer. Staff are friendly and there is lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Enjoy a coffee and desert or a full meal. They also have a location in Chicoutimi.

La Grange aux Hiboux – 6 minute walk south from port

Canadian, french.

With views of the fjord, this small bistro uses local ingredients to inspire their soups, salads, and main dishes. Open in the evenings only.

O’Gelato et Cacao – 3 min walk from port

Cafe, ice cream.

Stop by this shop to grab a treat to enjoy on your walk around town. Reviewers say the gelato rivals those you’d find in Italy. For a cooler day, the hot chocolate is made with melted chocolate, or have a tea or coffee. Pastries and local products are also available.

Top Restaurants in the Saguenay Area

Restaurant le bergerac – 3919 rue saint-jean, jonquiere – 25 kms from pier, european, caribbean, french cuisine.

In business since 1995, this small restaurant has an extensive wine list and a “creative fine dining” menu. Located in an old home in downtown Jonquiere, they grow their own herbs for their dishes. They serve Jamaican jerk-style mahi-mahi, filet mignon with wild mushrooms and Yukon Gold potatoes.

Boefish – 1303 boul. Talbot, Saguenay – 17 kms from pier

Steakhouse, mediterranean, barbecue.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Boefish (@boefish_restaurants)

This upscale restaurant specializes in steaks and fresh Mediterranean fish. The octopus salad and lobster pasta are favorites. They also have surf and turf platters to share. Try the IPA beer or an offering on the extensive wine list to pair with dinner. This restaurant is open for dinner only.

Temaki Sushi Bar – 317 Racine Street E, Chicoutimi, 19 kms from pier

Sushi, japanese.

There is an emphasis on sushi, but you can also get miso soup, cucumber salad, edamame and desserts as well as Waygu steaks and sausages. They have tempura veggie egg rolls and a spicy Japanese crab. The smoked salmon roll is also recommended. Everything is fresh and made-to-order and the restaurant is open at 2pm Wednesday to Saturday if you fancy a late lunch.

Things To Do in Saguenay (Quebec) – Canada

Saguenay fjord.

At 146 miles long, Saguenay fjord is one of the ten longest fjords in the world, with a long glacial valley and rocky cliffs. It is the only inhabited fjord in North America. The area surrounding the fjord is rugged and mountainous, with cliffs up to 1,150 feet high.  Cruises will offer tours like Zodiac rides in the fjord or get the view from above in a seaplane.

Musee du Fjord – 3346 boul. de la Grande-Baie Sud, La Baie, 4.6 kms south of pier

Here you can learn all about the Saguenay Fjord in a fun and interactive environment. You will be able to both see and touch some of the fjord’s living organisms. There are multimedia exhibits and 3-D films. There are 650 types of sea life in the aquarium. Wander by yourself, or join a guided walk at low tide to dig for minerals and plants. Tickets are available to purchase online.

Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay – 45 kms (40 min drive) from pier

This magnificent park is a wonder to explore. If you don’t have the time on your cruise stop, you should try to get back when you do have time to explore. The park offers the opportunity to be in the middle of nature at its best. You can backpack, hike, kayak, fish, sail and bike. This area has extraordinary chances for wildlife watching or an expedition into the backcountry. Take a look at this tour which leaves from the cruise terminal.

The Saguenay River passing through the Fjords of Saguenay, Canada

Scenic cruising Saguenay Fjord

Located north of Québec City and emptying into the St. Lawrence River, Saguenay is the most southerly fjord in the Northern Hemisphere. The fjord and its surrounding dense woodlands supported native peoples for centuries, but it only took about 50 years for European settlers to deforest most of it in the late 19th century. In 1970, the Québec government began purchasing tracts of land along the fjord with the intention of protecting the region as the Saguenay Fjord National Park (Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay), finally established in 1983. The park is divided into three principal areas—the Baie-de-Tadoussac near the mouth of the fjord, the Baie-Sainte-Marguerite and, farthest inland, the Baie-Éternité.

Its spectacular setting, with the wide Saguenay River overlooked by steep wooded cliffs, makes the fjord a popular year-round destination for kayaking, hiking and cross-country skiing. The fjord is also the foundation of a fascinating ecosystem that supports several varieties of migrating cetaceans, making it a prime spot for whale-watching. On its conifer-covered shorelines, the park protects populations of beavers, black bears, lynx and moose.
