Guide to Fremantle

Aboriginal name:  Walyalup (pronounced Wal-ya-lup)

  • Getting to Fremantle
  • When to visit

Wedged between Perth’s bustling shipping port and a working fishing harbour, there’s nowhere quite like historic and hipster Fremantle.

The port city of Fremantle, or ‘Freo’ to the locals, was historically Perth’s sister city. These days, the two are connected by suburbia and a 25-minute train journey. Wander through the UNESCO-listed streets to discover convict history, funky street art and al fresco cafés. This is where high-end travellers rub shoulders with backpackers, because Freo is eclectic, creative and has a coastal vibe all its own.

The city of Fremantle/Walyalup lies in Whadjuk Nyoongar boodjar country. For over 45,000 years, the Whadjuk Noongar people have seen Fremantle as a place for ceremonies, trading and cultural traditions. One of the best places to experience First Nations culture in Walyalup is the Walyalup Aboriginal Culture Centre .

  • Traditional name: Walyalup (pronounced Wal-ya-lup)
  • Indigenous Peoples: Whadjuk Noongar people
  • Traditional lands: Whadjuk Nyoongar boodjar country
  • Traditional languages: There are two traditional languages in Walyalup: Beeliar and Whadjuk Noongar
  • How to say g’day Noongar: kaya

It’s about a 30-minute drive from either central Perth or Perth Airport to Fremantle.

  • Perth Airport (PER) is 27km (17mi) from Fremantle, and services domestic and international arrivals
  • Hire cars, taxis and ride share services are readily available at the airport
  • A public train to Fremantle is available from Perth city at Perth Station

Fremantle is a pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood, which makes walking one of the best ways to explore. There’s also a free bus that operates in a loop around Fremantle.

Fremantle has consistent weather year-round, with hot summers and mild winters. Spring is generally considered a great time to visit, as temperatures are warm and wildflowers are blooming.

  • High season: Dryer seasons (September to January)
  • Low season: Wetter seasons (March to May)
  • Don’t miss: Whale watching in spring (September to November)

Is Fremantle Worth Visiting? 10 Reasons Why You should visit!

Last Updated on 10 March 2024 by Ariana Svenson

If you’re considering visiting Fremantle, you may wonder, ‘ Is Fremantle worth visiting ‘?  Fremantle has a way of drawing you in and making you want to stay longer and longer.

This stunning port city has a long maritime history, a beautiful harbour and fabulous beaches.  There are also fantastic breweries, unique places to eat, interesting shops and brilliant street art.

If I were to give you one reason, it would simply be “the vibe”.   When you are in Freo it feels like you are on holidays; there is the smell of the ocean on the breeze, and the calls of seagulls in the air.  Down town there is an arty and historic vibe,  and the smells of coffee, gelato waft in the air.  It just feels hip and happening!

Let’s explore the reasons that make Fremantle a must-visit destination! And if you are searching for fun things to do in Fremantle with kids , take a look at our guide here .

Beeliar Regional Park is a huge park just a 12-minute drive from central Fremantle.  Wander through bushland, spot wetlands and pristine lakes and discover the native plants and animals, including kangaroos, birds, and reptiles.  It’s the perfect escape from city life.

For a coastal experience, go to one of Fremantle’s stunning beaches.  A beach with lots of natural beauty is South Beach.  The coastal vegetation and dunes here are vital to the local ecosystem.  Stroll along the shoreline, swim in the clear waters, or have a beachside picnic.

One of the standout reasons to visit Fremantle is the rich history of the city and the part Fremantle played in Western Australia’s history.  This is showcased across many museums and historical attractions, such as the WA Maritime Museum and WA Shipwrecks Museum.  You can read our full review of the WA shipwrecks museum here.

The Western Australian Maritime Museum is a highlight, housing vessels and maritime artifacts.  Fremantle Prison is also a must-visit and offers an insight into Australia’s convict past.  Explore the prison on a tour and learn more about Fremantle’s history.

The Fremantle Round House, Western Australia’s oldest public building, is also a must-visit.  It offers a view of early colonial history.

Our son is a military history fanatic and this past holidays we’ve just spent several fascinating hours at the Army Museum in Burt Street, followed by a stroll around the leafy central park.

'His death is tragic': Former Dockers, Giants AFL player Cameron McCarthy found dead aged 29

Simon Brunsdon

UPDATED: The AFL world is in shock and mourning after news broke of the death of 29-year-old former Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney player Cameron McCarthy.

Western Australia police on Friday confirmed the death, with the Dockers and Giants releasing statements soon afterwards.

"About 6:15pm yesterday, Thursday 9 May 2024, emergency services were called to an address in Lake Coogee," police said.

McCarthy was drafted with pick 14 in 2013 and played 21 games for the Giants in Sydney, but requested a trade home to Perth due to homesickness.

He was granted the trade and joined Fremantle at the end of 2016.

McCarthy was the club's leading goal kicker in 2017 and played 49 games for the Dockers in total before being cut at the end of 2020.

Midway through the 2020 season McCarthy collapsed at training, and was later diagnosed with epilepsy.

"On behalf of everyone at the Fremantle Football Club, we extend our deepest sympathies to Cam's family at this unimaginably difficult time," Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick said.

"Cam came to the club from Greater Western Sydney in 2016 and played 49 games for Fremantle after initially being drafted from South Fremantle.

"His death is tragic, and to all of his family, friends and teammates, we extend our deepest condolences.

"Cam was a kind and easy-going person at the club, and he was someone who had a habit of making people smile and laugh. His talent was undeniable and he loved his footy.

"Our thoughts are with Cam's family and his loved ones during this time."

How the pandemic ended McCarthy's career

The Dockers will reportedly wear black armbands during Friday night's game against the Swans at Optus Stadium.

South Fremantle, McCarthy's junior club, added: "Cam is remembered as not just a prodigious football talent but as a popular, compassionate and caring person who had time for everyone at our club," South Fremantle said in a statement.

"He will be dearly missed."

The Giants, meanwhile, said McCarthy had made a huge impact after being drafted, describing his "great energy" around the club.

"We are saddened to learn of Cam's passing. The news has had a profound impact on many current and former GIANTS players and staff," said club CEO David Matthews.

"Cam had great energy and was a much-loved member of our club for the seasons he was here. He was very popular and a bright footballing talent.

"On behalf of the GIANTS, we extend our deepest sympathies to the entire McCarthy family and his many friends."

The AFL Players Association also released a statement, saying it was "a terribly sad time" for the code.

"All at the AFLPA extend our deepest sympathies to Cam's family, friends and all of the people who worked and played alongside him at the GWS Giants and Fremantle," AFL CEO Paul Marsh said.

AFL boss Andrew Dillon added: "On behalf of everyone at the AFL, our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the entire McCarthy family and Cam's loved ones and friends, along with his former teammates from both Fremantle and GWS."
