The Best Guide To Glacier Tours From Reykjavik

When you wander the streets and alleys in Reykjavik, you will find some beautiful scenes and unique traces every step of the way . And this is just a wonderful start for your journey in Iceland. After some awesome time in Reykjavik, it’s time for you to find more inspiration for your next adventure .
What Should You Do When You Are In Iceland?
There is so much to see and so much to do in Iceland. The vast subarctic wilderness is amazing, but it can be overwhelming for the first-time-to-Iceland travelers. The practical thing to do is to think about what Iceland is famous for when you plan your trip.
Experience The Glaciers
Iceland is famous for glaciers. In Iceland, about 11% of the land area is covered by glaciers. There are 269 named glaciers that almost include all types: ice caps (a mass of ice that covers less than 50,000 sq-km of land area), outlet glaciers (also named glacier tongue), mountain glaciers (alpine glaciers), cirque glaciers, and ice streams. Nothing showcases glacier better than Iceland . As one of the main attractions, glaciers are essential to Iceland tourism.
Most of the glacier tours are operated in South Iceland. Popular spots for glacier hiking, ice climbing, and ice caving tours are on Myrdalsjokull glacier , Solheimajokull glacier tongue , and Vatnajokull National Park .
Glaciers In Iceland
Vatnajokull Glacier
The Vatnajokull glacier is the most voluminous ice-cap in Iceland and in Europe. The name in Icelandic literally means “water glacier” in English. Sitting in the southeast of Iceland, its ice cap covers an area of 8,300 sq-km and owns more than 30 miraculous glacier tongues. The glacier tongues (also called outlet glaciers) are the glaciers that flow out of their ice caps. They remain constrained in the valley due to the complex shapes of the mountain landscapes. The major glacier tongues from Vatnajokull include Dyngjujokull and Bruarjokull in the north; Breidamerkurjokull and Skeidararjokull in the south; Sidujokull and Tungnaarjokull in the west; and then, Flaajokull and Skalafellsjokull in the east.
Vatnajokull Outlet Glaciers
On the south point of Vatnajokull, the highest peak Hvannadalshnukur is rising 2110 meters (6,920 feet) above sea level. The highest point is located on the northwestern rim of the Oraefajokull summit crater. Oraefajokull is the largest active volcano in Iceland . Its eruption in 1362 was so catastrophic that it wiped out all the previously established farmland and left the area uninhabitable for decades. This was one of the numerous powerful volcanic activities that formed and shaped the Icelandic magnificent, extraterrestrial landscapes over the course of time.
The volcanic activities in Vatnajokull are under constant surveillance since they were pretty erratic in the past centuries. Many seismologists believe that several predicted eruptions are now overdue. This could mean there will be some potentially powerful volcanic activities in the next 50 years if the academics are correct about their predictions.
The Best Activities In Vatnajokull Area
The area of Vatnajokull is now being protected as Vatnajokull National Park . It’s one of the largest national parks in Europe after years of development. Many adventurous activities are operated in this area. The most popular glacier experiences on the outlet glaciers of Vatnajokull are glacier hiking and ice caving .
Video From Glacier Hiking on Falljokull | Experience Glacier Hiking from Solheimajokull
Each summer, the fascinating ice caves start to form inside the glaciers. They will be fully formed in winter. That’s when you can follow a professional guide to enter an crystal ice cave in the Vatnajokull area . You will see the enchanting colors and the striking textures . Meanwhile, on the surface of the glacier tongues, the rugged icescapes also intrigue many outdoor lovers and adventure-seekers to come here for glacier hiking and the epic landscapes.
Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon And The Diamond Beach
In the same area, the brilliant Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon is a fantastic spot for boat tours and kayaking in the summertime. There are usually three types of boat tours: amphibian boat tour, Zodiac boat tour, and kayaking. All of them allow you the wonderful opportunities to be close to the floating ancient icebergs in the lake. You may also see some wildlife such as seabirds and seals relaxing on their favorite spots. The amphibian boat tour takes about 40 minutes, and you get to hold a piece of thousand-year-old ice and taste it. The Zodiac boat tour takes about one hour from meeting the guides for safety instruction and equipment. Cruising in the peaceful lake to see and hear the vivid wildlife while you are in the middle of the floating icebergs - it’ll be unforgettable!
A Seal is Relaxing In Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon While Visitors On Zodiac Boat Tour Approaching
The incredible Diamond Beach is close by. It’s a heavenly place for photographers and nature lovers. In the summertime, rich wildlife nest in this area making the place a lively natural wonder . When you are on a boat tour cruising in the middle of the icebergs, it’s possible to see some seals relaxing on the ice or on the shore if you are lucky!
Crystal Ice Pieces Look Like Diamonds at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon
Because Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon is located on the east point of the South Coast, many tours that go there from Reykjavik will pass the southern rim where numerous mind-blowing attractions are located. It’s impossible not to make multiple stops before you reach Jokulsarlon. If you plan to have a South Iceland - Reykjavik round trip in one day , you can go with Vatnajokull Voyager . It covers all the highlights in the south and offers free pickups from Reykjavik .
With the nation’s highest peak, the largest active volcano, the crown jewel Jokulsarlon, and the highlights along the South Coast, a journey to Vatnajokull is, without a doubt, a must-have experience. It’s approximately 319 kilometers from Reykjavik to Vatnajokull, and that’s a four-hour drive via Ring Road.
Myrdalsjokull Glacier And Solheimajokull Glacier Tongue
As the fourth largest ice cap in Iceland, Myrdalsjokull glacier is located in the south, and it approximately covers an area of 600 sq-km ( 232 sq-mi). The glacier is visible from Ring Road when you travel to South Coast from Reykjavik. The highest peak is 1,493 meters (4,898 ft) above sea level. The notoriously powerful volcano Katla lies beneath the glacier.
In 2010, the global media extensively reported the enormous eruption from Eyjafjallajokull for its disruptive power. Iceland immediately gained international fame in the spotlight. But, Eyjafjallajokull is not the only powerful volcano in Iceland. Katla , nicknamed the “ monster volcano ,” is even more powerful. It’s one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland and it erupted once every 95 years. In 1823, its eruption lasted for 28 days, which is considered a short Katla eruption. The longest eruption so far happened in 1755 in which Katla flared up for 120 days. The last major eruption happened in October 1918. The forceful eruption lasted for 24 days and generated a huge amount of mud flood deposits that extended the southern coast by 5 kilometers.
Myrdalsjokull area is susceptible to glacier floods. In 2011, the glacier flood created by the “monster volcano” Katla destroyed the bridge over Mulakvisi river. In Icelandic, glacier flood or glacier outburst flood is called “jokulhlaup.” This Icelandic word has been adopted by glaciological terminology in many languages because it’s a typical natural phenomenon in Iceland.
The Best Activities In Myrdalsjokull And Solheimajokull
Although some of the eruptions had catastrophic consequences, the violence underneath doesn’t tell the whole story about the glaciers. Myrdalsjokull is peaceful most of the time. The popular walking route, Fimmvorduhals Pass , lies between Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull, two of the most influential glaciers. While there is no imminent eruption, the glacier tours will continue to operate on Myrdalsjokull. For wonder-seekers, the most amazing thing about Myrdalsjokull glacier is you can visit the natural ice cave by Katla volcano all year round . When you stand in front of the glacier ice cave opening, you will be mesmerized by its colors, layers, and the glistening ice texture. There are tours to the stunning site offering free pickups from Reykjavik and Vik .
Volcanic Ash and Glacier Ice Layers
Solheimajokull glacier is one of the glacier tongues on Myrdalsjokull. The rugged glacier is filled with impressive ice crevasses. It’s easily accessible for visitors via Ring Road. Glacier hiking on Solheimajokull is wildly popular. It’s relatively easy to do, and there will be abundant time for you to appreciate the mind-blowing icescapes and the stunning glacier views. It’s an ideal option if you plan to join a glacier hike tour from Reykjavik .
Keep in mind that on the glacier the weather is windier than on the ground. In order to have a nice experience during glacier hiking, you need to dress properly for the occasion . And it’s not recommended that you hike on the glacier without a professional guide. Therefore it’s best to go with a group on a guided tour.
Ice climbing on Solheimajokull is also popular . This fun adventure is not as difficult as it sounds. It’s usually a combination of glacier hiking and ice climbing activities for a small group of participants. During the thrilling actions, you can interact with the blue glacier ice closely. The professional guide usually has the capacity of attending to everyone’s need for help on the tour.
The Golden Circle
The Golden Circle refers to the three fabulous attractions within 100 kilometers from Reykjavik: Thingvellir National Park, Geysir, and Gullfoss waterfall. The three equally stunning sights are on top of every visitor’s list of must-sees in Iceland.
Thingvellir National Park is where nature and culture harmonically unite into one . It stands on the point where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates diverge. The rift valley is called the Mid Atlantic Ridge. It passes through Iceland from North to South, and Iceland is the only country in the world where you can see the rift valley. More excitingly, Thingvellir hosts the most visible part and you can literally walk between the two continents, or even go for a snorkeling or diving in the nearby Silfra Fissure . This geologically dramatic wonder is too good to miss.
Winter's Thingvellir National Park Where You Can Stand Between Two Continents
Thingvellir was also the establishing place for the world’s oldest parliament. In the wintertime, when snow covers the entire land, Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland, will turn into a mirror doubling the area and making the surroundings an unbelievably beautiful wonderland.
Strokkur Geysir gushing up, the Golden Circle, Iceland
60 kilometers to the east, you will find geysers in one of the most spectacular geothermal areas in Iceland. Situated in the Haukadalur Valley , the geothermal area is home to a range of sceneries including hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles, and geysers. Among these geothermal wonders, the unpredictable Great Geysir and the active Strokkur are the two famous attractions.
You will stand in the middle of the colorful land, where the hills are painted by the minerals that once were underneath the ground. Due to the geothermal activities in the area, the mineral elements later were brought to the surface giving the land a unique signature.
Beautiful, Crystal Clear Hot Spring of Geyser, the Golden Circle of Iceland
The Great Geysir is a legend of its kind. It’s named after the Old Norse verb “to gush” - geysa - and the word was eventually evolved to become the term “geyser” referring to this type of geothermal phenomenon.
The Great Geysir is not as active as before due to the change of the tectonic activities in this area. But when it does erupt, the gush can reach up to 70 meters (229 feet) in height. The record-high eruption happened in 1840. It said that at that time, the hot spring hurled up about 170 meters (557 feet) in the air; and in 2000, it managed to reach a height of 122 meters (400 feet).
The Strokkur geyser is very active. It erupts every four to ten minutes, and the water can reach up to 20 meters (65 feet) in height. It said that Strokkur has gone up to 40 meters (131 feet) in history.
The geologists believe Strokkur and Great Geysir were formed around the same time. In the recorded Icelandic geology, Strokkur wasn’t even mentioned because the Great Geysir always outperformed its same-aged neighbour. Until 1789, an earthquake unblocked the conduit, Strokkur finally became active and started to gain attention.
Because the Great Geysir is unpredictable most of the time, many visitors spend more time to see Strokkur. It’s only a short wait to see the expected water eruption in the middle of the vast geothermal land. It’s sensational when you see the peaceful turquoise water , first slowly then suddenly , hurls up in the air .
Gullfoss Waterfall, the Golden Circle of Iceland
The third stop, also the most powerful attraction in the Golden Circle, is Gullfoss Waterfall. Gullfoss In Icelandic literally means “golden waterfall” in English.
The voluminous flow comes from Hvita , a river originated from the Langjokull glacier . The iconic waterfall has a drop in two stages. The cascade first runs 11 meters (36 feet) down to a platform where the power of the flow gets stronger before it plummets 21 meters (69 feet) down to the rugged canyon. The canyon is about 70 meters (230 feet) in depth. The immerse rumbling sounds created by the giant flow is like a natural symphony that leaves the visitors standing in awe.
From the tranquil Thingvellir National Park to the steaming geothermal area, then finally to Gullfoss, the Golden Circle has the best to offer and is only within the 100-kilometer radius of Reykjavik. It’s possible to see all the attractions on a one day Golden Circle - Reykjavik round trip. You can also join the popular three-day trip that takes you to the Golden Circle and the mesmerizing South Coast.
The South Coast
We have mentioned that the glaciers in Iceland are mostly located in the south. When you head south, it’s best to plan the itinerary on a multi-day schedule. You can mix the fascinating sightseeing activities with some exciting glacier adventures .
The South Coast has too much to see , and many stunning waterfalls and black sand beaches are located along the South Coast. The southern rim stretches from Reykjavik to Vik, but a greater area can cover the mighty Vatnajokull National Park where Jokulsarlon is located. When you reach Selfoss, where the southern lowland begins, it’s about 322 kilometers via Ring Road to Jokulsarlon.
The main attractions include the fabulous Seljalandsfoss waterfall , the amazing Skogafoss waterfall , and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach .
Winter's Vista, Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in South Iceland
Seljalandsfoss waterfall is located 121 kilometers (75 mile) east to Reykjavik. Originated underneath Eyjafjallajokull glacier, Seljalandsa river is running to the west on a flat highland until it reaches the 60-meter (197 feet) high cliff. The cascade drops dramatically in the pond at the bottom. There is a cave on the cliff where visitors can go inside. It provides a refreshing perspective to see and interact with the waterfall . You will be able to place your senses in the misty place, whereas, in summer, the delightful Icelandic faunae welcome the season with a mix of pleasant smells; in winter, the surroundings transform into a land of silence with dreamy colors.
Rainbow and Skogafoss Waterfall in South Iceland
Skogafoss waterfall is usually the next stop. As one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, the beautiful Skogafoss has an astonishing width of 25 meters (82 feet) and a drop of 60 meters in height. Standing at the foot of the hill, the grand cascade dwarfs the surrounding area by the wide and dynamic stream. In a sunny day, the amount of the spray produced by the falling water often creates a single or even a double rainbow. The multicolored arc makes Skogafoss a romantic place attracting many people to come with their loved ones.
In addition to these two famous waterfalls, there are many other stunning waterfalls in Iceland's South Coast that visitors adore. If you are planning to hunt waterfalls, make sure to add some glacier activities to enrich your journey.
Along the beautiful South Coast , there are many stunning places with excellent sightseeing value and great geological significance . Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is the perfect example.
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach In South Iceland
As one of the most famous black sand beaches in the world, Reynisfjara stands out for many unique geological features . Wandering on its black sands, the first thing you will notice is the impressive basalt columns forming a geometrical pattern on the side of the hill. You will find a huge cave in Mt. Reynisfjall . The cave’s ceiling was formed by the intersections of the basalt columns. Their polished surfaces glitter in a shimmering silver color when you look at it from a certain angle. In the ocean, the sea stacks stand solitarily like some giant sculptures carved by nature. The ancient volcanic activities unwittingly created so many extraordinary scenes where many visitors find themselves mesmerized. The nearby town Vik i Myrdal is also a must-visit attraction in the south.
Vík í Mýrdal, a scenic town in South Iceland
There are many South Coast tours from Reykjavik that offer free pickup and drop-off services. One of the best features a guided multi-day tour has is that the participants can learn a great deal about the Icelandic nature and culture from a professional, knowledgeable tour guide .
The Snaefellsnes Peninsula
When you are on the west rim of the Capital Region, by looking toward northwest you can see a beautifully shaped, ice-capped mountain on a day of good visibility. That’s Snaefellsjokull glacier, one of the most beloved glaciers by the Icelandic people. It’s located in the picturesque Snaefellsnes Peninsula , where the highlights include a wide range of landscapes from the light sand beach near Búðir , the vibrant harbor town Stykkisholmur , the gorgeous composition of Kirkjufell and Kirkjufoss , to the supreme Snaefellsjokull glacier .
It’s an approximately 203-kilometer (126 mile) drive from Reykjavik to the west tip of the Peninsula, and it’s about 207 kilometers (129 mile) to circle the Peninsula when the starting and end point is Gerduberg Cliffs . The 500-meter wide Gerduberg Cliff is a massive wall of basalt columnar jointing reaching up to 14 meters above the ground, and the maximum width of the column forms is 1.5 meters.
Gerduberg Cliffs in West Iceland, a Highlight Attraction on Snaefellsnes Peninsula Itinerary
This spectacular attraction is also one of the recommended highlights when you plan to travel to the south and west part. If you only have a few days in Iceland, think about the following plans: it takes about four days to cover the highlights in South Coast including Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and the Snaefellsnes Peninsula ; you can add one more day when you want to see the magnificent Golden Circle .
From Reykjavik To The Amazing South Coast And More
As the capital city of the Nordic island, Reykjavik is close to a wide range of sceneries. Situated in the southwest corner of Iceland, its location never limits your exploration. It’s actually where your adventure starts. Even if you only have two days, you can still experience the photogenic South Coast from Reykjavik. The trip will take you all the way to Jokulsarlon. You will stay one night in the countryside. In the wintertime, you will have a better chance to see the Northern Lights since it’s far away from the city lights.
Northern Lights in Iceland
Staying in Reykjavik is a wonderful plan. Many hotels and hostels are located near downtown Reykjavik. You can enjoy the convenience of a cozy, functional capital, while you have the option of joining a tour to the incredible Icelandic wilderness that offers free pickups in Reykjavik . You can check out the list of highlight attractions below on the west and south part of Iceland.

Tour Description
At 8 am, your guide will pick you up from your chosen bus stop or hotel for your adventure day in Iceland. On the way to your first destination, you will pass by some beautiful mountains and a highly geothermal area. After leaving the Capital Region, you will make your way to the first stop of the tour – the mighty Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
Seljalandsfoss waterfall is a powerful waterfall in the South of Iceland, with a dramatic 60-meter drop. This beautiful waterfall is one of the best-known and frequently visited places not only because it’s so close to Reykjavik, but also because of its unique structure – as the cliffs behind the waterfall have a wide cavern, allowing everyone to fully encircle the waterfall from behind.
Make sure to bring rainwear, as you have a high chance of getting wet from the drizzle.
Skógafoss Waterfall
Your next stop will be the majestic waterfall Skógafoss, which is 30 minutes away from Seljalandsfoss. Skógafoss – which means “forest waterfall’ in Icelandic’, is one of Iceland’s largest and most beautiful waterfalls, with another dramatic 60-meter drop (197 feet), and one of few waterfalls that can be viewed from the top.
Skógafoss is frequently referred to as a “unique waterfall” because the waterfall comes directly from two glaciers nearby – Eyjafjallajökull & Mýrdalsjökull. Eventually, all this water ends in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The most special thing about this waterfall is the fact that you can climb to the top of the mountain from where the waterfall is coming down. On the side of the mountain, you will be greeted with 500 stairs, which will let you easily reach the top. From there, you will be able to see how the waterfall forms and will be greeted with a beautiful walking path into a magical canyon along the Skógá River on the top of the mountain.
The land near the waterfall is very flat, allowing everyone to get close to this beauty easily. The stairs are a bit more challenging.
After all the mystical waterfalls, you will go for some lunch.
Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull Glacier
After lunch, we will continue driving East for the most exciting activity of the day – a Glacier Hike on one of the last remaining glaciers in the world. We will explore Sólheimajökull – a mesmerizing, long, and wide outlet of the Mýrdalsjökul glacier, which is the 4th largest glacier in Iceland.
We will first arrive at the Sóleimajökull Glacier parking lot, where you will be greeted by your professional glacier guide. Your guide will hand you all the necessary equipment: crampons, harnesses, ice axes, and more. For the hike, we recommend wearing layers of clothing and a waterproof shell rather than wearing bulky clothes. Immediately after that, you will start your hike toward one of the most beautiful glaciers in Iceland.
Be ready to be welcomed by gigantic crevasses constantly detaching themselves from the glacier; therefore, seeing large pieces of ice falling into the lagoon is not uncommon. On most days, you will be able to see huge icebergs floating in the lagoon, a few hundred meters away from the glacier.
Your adventure will be pretty easy. However, it is important to be in good shape. The hike will include some higher elevations at the beginning of the tour. After reaching the top of the glacier, your hike will remain relatively easy.
Be ready for a spectacular experience with this rare natural phenomenon.
Reynisfjara: the Black Sand Beach
After an unforgettable hike on the glacier, you will make one more stop at the famous Reynisfjara – also known as the Black Sand Beach. Black sand beaches form after numerous volcanic eruptions in the area, slowly eroding the lava over millions of years.
At this breathtaking place, you will also be welcomed by massive basalt columns. Basalt columns have a special shape because of the way the lava cools. It is very rare to find such long & solid basalt columns anywhere else in the world. The photogenic Dýrhólaey cliffs are also very well seen in this area. The south is also a paradise for bird lovers, like puffins, razorbills, and dozens of other species nest on top of these cliffs in the summertime.
Back to Reykjavík
We will then start heading back to Reykjavik and are expected to arrive around 8 pm, though this may be subject to change depending on weather and road conditions.

You will get the opportunity of a lifetime to enjoy one of the world’s most incredible wildernesses; Iceland’s second-largest glacier – even from the inside! The drive to Langjökull glacier is very scenic, and on the way, we make a stop by the Hraunfossar waterfalls. “Hraun” in Icelandic means lava, and the lava at Hraunfossar waterfalls came from one of Langjökull glacier’s volcanic eruptions ages ago. At Langjökull glacier’s edge, specially modified glacier vehicles will take care of the ride up to the glacier and the ice caves – and what a ride it is! #2. Snowmobiling On A Glacier Full-Day Tour From Reykjavik (8-12 Hours)
If you are looking for a fun and unique Iceland glacier tour, why not ride a snowmobile on top of a glacier? This is fun for the whole family, but kids particularly love this snowmobile tour from Reykjavik.
Pretty much every snowmobile tour in Iceland begins and ends in Reykjavik which makes it easy to book and enjoy. That being said, there are a few snowmobile tours like this one that just includes the snowmobiling where you will have to drive and meet your group.
If you want to choose to snowmobile as your Iceland glacier tour, make sure that you pack very warm clothing as you will be exposed to the elements! Although they do give you warmer clothes when you take a snowmobiling tour in Iceland, you will want to dress in your own warm layers as well.
Most Iceland glacier tours that provide snowmobiling also include an entire day of fun! That is why these tours are usually 8-12 hours in length. While snowmobiling on a glacier is a huge part of this tour, it isn’t the only part.
You can be prepared to see waterfalls, lava fields, and geysers on top of snowmobiling, depending on which Iceland glacier tour package you choose!
Book here: Golden Circle, Super Truck and Snowmobiling Small Group Tour (10 Hours)
Reserve Tickets Now: Golden Circle and Snowmobiling from Reykjavik (9 Hours)
Pick This If You Want A Shorter Tour: Snowmobiling on Eyjafjallajökull (2 Hours)
#3. Subterranean Church And Tunnels Iceland Glacier Tour (3-10 Hours)
This is one of the more unique Iceland glacier tours on this list. Unlike the first option where you will see some crystal blue ice caves on the surface of the glacier, this exciting Iceland glacier tour takes you inside the actual glacier itself! You will head to west Iceland to Langjokull Glacier and part of many tours will include seeing hot springs and beautiful Icelandic wilderness.
Once you have arrived, you will descend down 1600 feet into the glacier to visit the worlds largest man-made ice tunnel.
Once you are literally inside the glacier and deep under the surface of the ice, you will get to explore the blue and white tunnels and you will be completely surrounded by thick ice. If you aren’t good in tight spaces, this may not be the right Iceland glacier tour choice for you!
The coolest part of this Iceland glacier tour is that there is an actual church hidden away below the ice and you get to see it on this tour. It is one of the best places to see on your Iceland Itinerary!
The chapel can be rented out for actual weddings and there are even little benches for guests to sit on with little blankets for them to use during your big day. Even if you aren’t getting married, seeing this church buried deep below the ice is a highlight of this Iceland glacier tour.

#4. Glacier Ice Climbing Tour (4-5 Hours)
This Iceland glacier tour is Victoria’s favorite and you will not be let down by choosing to go ice climbing during your trip. Of course, deciding if this glacier tour is the right one for you is completely up to you and you alone.
Glacier climbing tours in Iceland are meant for newbies [unless you book otherwise] so you don’t have to be an ice climbing pro to book them. That being said, you should be in good physical fitness, have decent upper body strength, and a good sense of adventure.
Many glacier climbing tours are family-friendly but be sure to ask if there is a minimum age requirement for your kid. There are multiple glaciers in Iceland, but the most popular tours run in Skaftafell National Park which is home to Europe’s largest glacier. If you aren’t heading up to east Iceland near the Skaftafell area, don’t worry, there are other Ice climbing tour options for you!
Book Here: Skaftafell Ice Climbing (4 Hours)

If You Like To Be Alone: Private Ice Climbing at Sólheimajökull
#5. Glacier Hiking And Walking Tour (5-10 Hours)
If you want a more active Iceland glacier tour but don’t really want to put on a harness and climb up the side of the ice like the option listed above, why not consider a glacier hike ?
Glacier hikes in Iceland are perfect for those looking to get up close with a glacier without doing anything too crazy. If you don’t like the word hiking [like us heehee], then there are even options for glacier walking tours!
Glacier walking tours take you on top of one of Iceland’s impressive glaciers but you go at a slower and more enjoyable speed. The glacier walks may also be coupled with other beautiful destinations in Iceland so you are getting more bang for your buck.
Glacier hiking in Iceland is a bit more involved than a simple walking tour and may last longer and be slightly more difficult. Either way, both walking and hiking are usually great options for families and larger groups looking for the perfect Iceland glacier tour.

#6 South Coast & Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon 2 Day Tour (2 Days)
If you’re looking for an Iceland glacier tour that is packed with sights and adventure, you must check out the South Coast tour . Not only is this tour filled to the brim with iconic views such as a glacier’s edge, and some waterfalls, but this tour is 2 days in length, making it one of the best overnight Iceland glacier tours around!
On the first day, you’ll get to encounter lush farmlands, volcanos, waterfalls, and more before moving to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. You’ll stay overnight at the Geroi Country Hotel, where you can rest, relax and even marvel at the majestic mountain region close by.
Your second day starts with breakfast and then you will take a locally guided tour to an area near Prong, which is close to the edge of the glacier. This specific tour offers you the opportunity to see a beautiful but lesser travel to place– meaning there are great landscapes, views, and less people and tourist vibes!
On the way back to Reykjavik you will then stop by the Selkalandsfoss waterfall, which is one of the most iconic falls on the South Coast. You can walk up this falls footpath, and then settle back into the bus as the tour returns to Reykjavik around 10 pm.
This long tour is totally worth it, and the glacier lagoon is beautiful– sea water flows into the lagoon as huge blocks of ice break off the glacier. It is a must see!

#7 Ice Cave Tour and Glacier Hike (4 Hours)
The Skatefell Ice Cave Tour and Glacier Hike is a life-changing experience. This Iceland glacier tour allows for you to step inside a natural blue ice cave and walk on Vatnajokull, which is Europe’s largest glacier in Skaftafell National Park.
Explore the breathtaking ice formations and glacier mills, knowing that this naturally-formed blue cave is of the Earth, and talk with your informed guide to learn how this cave and glaciers were specifically formed.
This same guide will take you to the base of Falljokull, an outlier glacier of the Vatnajokull ice cap, where they will then lead you up to the cave. Just a warning: this glacier is the highest peak of Iceland’s tallest moutian range, so be prepared for some heights!
And know that on a clear day, you should be able to see Hvannadalshnukur in the distance– so keep an eye out! This small group experience is life changing, as it is a tour that offers information, a good hike, and spectacular views you won’t soon forget.

#8 Skalafellsjokull Glacier Super Jeep Tour (4 Hours)

This jeep tour takes you beyond the limits of what a typical tourist can see, surpassing road F985, and allows you to witness some of the most breathtaking views of one of the biggest glaciers in Europe.
While driven up the Glacier Valley Sultarungnaigil, this tour is one of the Iceland glacier tours that allows for you to sit back and relax, enjoying the views of a glacier from the top while staying safe in a luxury super jeep.
Since this tour is “off the beaten track,” it is a unique experience that allows for you to stay away from crowds AND you get the best Icelandic nature experience. Ascending through the valley, these natural views are iconic and breathtaking. You must not miss it!

#9 Tour of the Golden Circle, Glacier Lagoon, & Ice Cave (3 days)
Because there are so many glaciers and wonders to witness in Iceland, you may want to consider spending a lot of time (and maybe some money?) on your Iceland glacier tours!
During your first day of this 3-day tour, you will explore the Golden Circle with Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss . From stopping at the UNESCO and Thinvellir National Park, this first day is filled with must-see destinations that are rich with history and geology.
During your second day you get to explore the South Coast with stops at Reynisfjara, Glacier Lagoon and an Ice Cave visit. Between the icebergs and Diamond beach, you’ll want to bring a camera for pictures! And during the winter months, you can also see the Northern Lights here too!
On your last day of the trip, day three is all focused on the glaciers. This glacier hiking adventure allows for you to explore one of Vatnajokull’s outlet glaciers with the help of a certified guide.
The unique ice formations and crevices and falls are always changing, so each group will experience something new! After your hike, you will be dropped off in Reykjavik, but not before you can conclude your trip with a scenic journey back to the capital. These stops are magical, frozen, and stunning, so you really should consider spending the time to explore them!

#10 Ice Caving and Glacier Hiking at Vatnajokull (4 Hours)
Vatnajokull is Europe’s largest glacier, and many of Iceland’s glacier tours offer a fantastic look at this frozen icon, but the ice caving and glacier hiking tours to Vatnajokull is probably one of the best opportunities to visit this phenomenon. In this tour, you have the opportunity to gear up and follow a guide to set foot on the ice of Vatnajokull and trek through the magnificent scenery.
In this opportunity, guests also have a fantastic chance to go inside an ice cave. Ice caves are only accessible during winter when the temperature drops below zero and the water from rivers underneath freeze, leaving space for you to explore.
Each year new caves are formed, so if you take this tour more than once, you will never see the same thing twice! Hiking back over the glacier through this landscape of rugged ice is fantastic. And although we mentioned another ice cave tour at the beginning of this article, no tours are ever the same!
So make sure to consider your options depending on expedition length, guide information, location and more! You don’t want to miss the unique experiences they all can offer.

What To Pack For Your Iceland Glacier Tour
When you are taking a glacier tour in Iceland, you are going to want to wear the proper clothing and be prepared. The weather in Iceland is no joke and changes quickly so dressing in warm waterproof clothing is key.
Some tours may provide you with cleats for walking on the ice or a suit for snowmobiling, but that is it. It is up to you to dress correctly for the environment. Proper shoes, hats, gloves, jackets, and pants should be worn at the very minimum.
Recommended clothes to wear on your Iceland glacier tour:
Cold-Certified Waterproof Boots. Boots and shoes that are cold-certified are a must when taking tours in Iceland. If your feet are wet and cold the rest of your body won’t have any fun! We recommend these Columbia Heavenly Omni-Heat Mid Calf Boot but proper shoes are so important to use that we wrote this entire post about the best boots to wear in Iceland during both the winter and summer!
Fleece Lined Leggings . Fleece lined leggings are our secret weapon to staying warm in Iceland. When you go on an Iceland glacier tour, you are going to literally be either on top of or inside a giant chunk of ice. Dressing in layers and wearing a fleece-lined base is important if you want to stay warm.
Omi-Heat Winter Jacket. We recommend a great winter jacket no matter what time you visit Iceland. If you are going on a glacier tour, a good winter jacket is even more important. We recommend a jacket with omni-heat technology. This technology reflects your body heat and keeps you even warmer. We like this Columbia Omni-Heat Morning Light II Jacket. Since we know jackets are important, we have this entire post about choosing the right jacket for Iceland!
Waterproof Gloves. Waterproof gloves are so important as you will most likely be touching the sides of the wet ice. Some Iceland glacier tour operators provide you with gloves, but we have found them to all be pretty terrible in quality. If you want to safeguard your hands, it is best to buy some online like these waterproof suede gloves so that you ensure that you have a good quality pair before you arrive.
Balaclava. If you have never heard of a Balaclava, you are in for a real treat! A balaclava is the perfect thing to keep you warm when on an Icelandic glacier. A balaclava is better than a scarf because it still keeps your neck warm without flying away in the wind. This is important because Iceland is so windy and you need to close the gap between your neck and your jacket when on a glacier tour in Iceland.
Granola Bars. Most of these tours in Iceland do not include snacks so that is up to you to bring. If you are going on one of the longer tours of Iceland that are 10-13 hours long, you are going to want to be prepared with food! We love these Quaker Granola Bars and always bring food to Iceland since it is such an expensive country. You can easily buy bars in advance so you can save time and money once you are in Iceland.
Portable Power Bank. When taking glacier tours of Iceland, you will be gone from your hotel for a very long time. You are going to want to have your phone charged so you can document your wonderful experience in Iceland which is why we always recommend taking a portable power bank like this one! These portable chargers are good for multiple charges and will keep your phone ready for photos and calls if necessary.
Whether you choose to climb on ice, ride on top of, or go inside, there is an Iceland glacier tour for everyone.
The crystal Ice cave tour is on many people’s bucket lists and we can tell you that you will not be disappointed? Have littles or don’t want anything too crazy? A glacier walk is perfect for you!
These best glacier tours in Iceland will have you packing your bags and planning your trip! Just don’t forget to wear the right clothing and you will be good to go!

Looking for unique Iceland bucket list experiences? Iceland has become a bucket-list destination for many travelers, and it’s easy to see why. With its otherworldly landscapes, vibrant culture, and geothermal wonders, it’s a place unlike anywhere else.
But with rising tourist numbers, many visitors find themselves sticking to the popular Golden Circle route. If you’re looking for a more unique and off-the-beaten-path Icelandic adventure, consider venturing west to the spectacular Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
In this guide, I will share with you the lesser-explored side of Iceland, sharing hidden gems, insider tips, and the authentic experiences you’ll find as you journey away from the crowds. We’ll base our exploration out of the charming Hotel Húsafell, a haven of sustainability nestled near the iconic Snæfellsjökull glacier.
Reykjavík - Iceland’s Cultural Gateway
Before heading into the wilds of Western Iceland, let’s start in Reykjavík, the vibrant capital city. It’s a compact city, easily explored on foot, and it’s steeped in fascinating history and culture.
- UNESCO City of Literature: Iceland boasts a rich storytelling tradition dating back to Viking sagas, and Reykjavík was the first non-English speaking city to receive this prestigious designation.
- Trolls and Hidden People: While exploring, you’ll quickly notice that belief in trolls and “hidden people” isn’t just for children here. It’s a deeply ingrained part of Icelandic folklore that even influences construction projects!
Sun Voyager: This striking steel sculpture on the waterfront resembles a Viking ship and is a popular spot for photos.
Hallgrimskirkja Church: Ascend to the tower of this iconic church for panoramic city views and a glimpse of the distant Snæfellsjökull glacier.
Leifur Eiríksson Statue: Pay homage to the legendary Viking explorer who discovered North America centuries before Columbus.
Icelandic sheep have kept the inhabitants of this chilly island warm for centuries. Their unique wool, called Lopi, is used to create the iconic Lopapeysa sweaters.
- The Handknitting Association of Iceland: Visit one of their Reykjavik shops to purchase authentic, handmade sweaters directly from the knitters themselves. You can even discover who made your sweater through its unique code! Learn more about this association on their website: Handknitting Association of Iceland
You can’t visit Reykjavík without trying a hotdog from Bæjarins Beztu. This tiny stand has been a beloved institution since 1937, serving up hotdogs made with a unique blend of lamb, pork, and beef.
Order yours “with everything” to get the classic Icelandic toppings. Even celebrities like Bill Clinton and Kim Kardashian have been known to stop by!
For a taste of the unexpected, delve into our under-the-radar guided activities in Reykjavik, Iceland .
Exploring West Iceland
Now, let’s leave the urban charms of Reykjavík behind and head west towards the wild beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Our base for this adventure will be the environmentally conscious Hotel Húsafell.
Its prime location within the Snæfellsnes National Park makes it the perfect spot for exploration and offers a good chance of catching those elusive, Northern Lights .
- Commitment to Sustainability: Hotel Húsafell deeply understands the delicate balance of Iceland’s ecosystem. They use renewable energy and support local conservation efforts, showing you can experience luxury and still be a responsible traveler.
- Ideal for Aurora Borealis Viewing: The hotel’s remote location minimizes light pollution, creating ideal conditions for witnessing the dazzling Northern Lights. They even offer a free wake-up call service specifically for this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon!
Our first stop in West Iceland showcases the stunning natural beauty of the region: Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. These are a bit different than the towering falls you’ll find on the Golden Circle.
- Unique Cascading Waterfalls: Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls spilling over a wide stretch of lava rock, creating an ethereal scene. Barnafoss, known as the “children’s waterfall,” has a tragic legend attached to it.
- Bring Your Crampons: The paths here can get icy, especially in winter. Be sure to pack crampons (shoe spikes) for better grip and safety. Speaking of ice, this area’s water has a distinct blue hue thanks to “glacial”flour”-finely ground rock particles that reflect the sunlight.
For a truly unforgettable experience, venture deep into the Vidgelmir Lava Cave. This natural wonder was formed around 900 AD by an eruption from Langjökull glacier, located about 22 miles away.
- What to Expect: Don a helmet and headlamp and descend into this subterranean world. Your guide will explain the captivating geology and point out unique formations. There’s even a section where you’ll experience what true total darkness is like!
- Safety First: While bats are a common cave dweller in many places, don’t worry – you won’t find any in Iceland! Also, be aware that there’s only one way in and out, so if you’re prone to claustrophobia, it might be best to admire the cave’s beauty from the outside.
Discover more places to see in west Iceland in this article, best things to do in West Iceland away from the crowd.
If there’s a must-do activity in Iceland, it’s exploring a glacier – and not just any glacier. Langjökull is the second-largest glacier in Iceland, and it’s the only one with an accessible ice cave.
- Otherworldly Experience: Picture yourself riding a massive vehicle specifically designed to conquer snowy terrain. You’ll journey up the glacier, enjoying breathtaking mountain views bathed in the soft, diffused light of an Icelandic winter.
- Inside the Glacier: Descend into the heart of the glacier through a man-made tunnel. Marvel at the vibrant blues and learn about the science of glaciers and the effects of climate change, which are sadly very evident on Langjökull. You might even stumble upon an ethereal ice chapel!
- A Moment for Reflection: This tour offers a unique perspective on the fragile beauty of our planet. Take the time to appreciate the raw power of nature and the need to protect these precious environments.
Iceland is famous for its geothermal activity, and the area near Hotel Húsafell is no exception. After a day of adventure, there’s nothing quite like soaking in a steaming hot spring surrounded by stunning landscapes.
- Canyon Baths: A Hidden Gem: Hotel Húsafell offers access to an exclusive experience, the Canyon Baths. It takes a bit of a hike to reach them, but it’s worth it for the serenity and stunning mountain backdrop.
- Intimate and Eco-Conscious: These geothermal pools are fueled by a 2.5 million-year-old volcano! The focus here is on enjoying the peacefulness of nature with minimal environmental impact.
Snorkeling at Thingvellir National Park
For a truly unforgettable experience, consider braving the chilly waters and snorkeling in Silfra at Thingvellir National Park. Yes, snorkeling in Iceland! While a popular spot on the Golden Circle, the unique experience makes it worth venturing out for.
- UNESCO World Heritage Site: Thingvellir holds deep historical significance. It was the site of Iceland’s first parliament, Althingi, established in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest parliamentary sites in the world.
- Where Continents Collide: The real draw of Silfra, however, lies beneath the surface. This underwater rift is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet and are slowly pulling apart.
- Crystal Clear Glacial Water: The water in Silfra comes from the Langjökull glacier, filtered through lava rocks for decades, resulting in unparalleled visibility. You’ll feel like you’re flying as you glide through this pristine underwater world.
Discover the seven must-experience destinations in South Iceland for an in-depth guide to the region’s highlights and hidden gems.
- Specialized Gear: Reputable tour companies will provide you with insulated wetsuits and gear for your comfort and safety. The water is cold, but your body will surprisingly adjust quickly.
- Embrace the Challenge: If the idea of cold water makes you nervous, remember that the experience itself is far more enjoyable than the initial anticipation!
- A Place of History and Geology: After you get out of the water, take a walk to the site of the ancient Parliament for a powerful sense of Icelandic history and the ever-changing forces shaping this extraordinary land.
Back at Hotel Húsafell, a culinary adventure awaits. Head Chef Ingolfur Piffl puts a modern twist on traditional Icelandic fare, emphasizing fresh, local ingredients and an impressive knowledge of foraging.
- Sustainable and Seasonal: The hotel strives to minimize its carbon footprint by sourcing from Icelandic farmers and even growing their own edible flowers and mushrooms.
- A Chef’s Passion: Chef Ingolfur’s background (he has degrees from Harvard, no less!) shines through in his creative dishes and commitment to culinary innovation rooted in Icelandic traditions.

Iceland transforms with the seasons, each offering its own distinct magic.
Summer brings the midnight sun, inviting endless exploration under the glow of nearly 24-hour daylight, while winter cloaks the land in a mystical atmosphere and offers a chance to witness the spectacular Northern Lights .
Choosing the right time for your Iceland trip is key to the ultimate experience, as it greatly affects which activities are at their best and whether you want to mingle with crowds or enjoy some solitude.
Find out more in our article “ Best Time for Iceland: Top Places by Season ,” where we’ll help you tailor your itinerary based on your dream activities, weather preferences, budget considerations, and the type of ambiance you seek.
- Plan for the Crowds: Iceland is a popular destination, so if you want to avoid peak crowds, try visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall). For up-to-date visitor data, check out the Visit Iceland website .
- Aurora Forecasts: The Northern Lights are most visible during the winter (late August to April), but clear skies are essential. Get real-time forecasts from the Icelandic Meteorological Office or websites like Spaceweather .
- Stay at Hotel Húsafell: If you’re looking for a base to explore West Iceland’s hidden gems, Hotel Húsafell offers luxury, sustainability, and access to unique experiences.
- Travel with the Experts: For insider knowledge and a more personalized experience, consider a private tour company like Oak Travel , a family-owned business specializing in authentic Icelandic adventures.
- Iceland Can Be Expensive: As an island nation, Iceland imports many goods, so prices can be higher than expected. Factor this into your budget and consider the value of the unique experiences and memories you’ll make.
- Pack Layers: Iceland’s weather can change quickly. Be prepared for sunshine, wind, and rain – sometimes all in one day! Bring layers you can easily add or remove.
- Don’t Forget Your Crampons: These shoe spikes are invaluable for safely navigating icy trails and are worth the small investment.
Iceland’s raw beauty and ever-changing landscapes leave a lasting impression. The resilience of Icelanders, who thrive amidst the elements, counterbalances the sometimes extreme weather.
As a visitor, do your part to protect their fragile environment by supporting sustainable tourism practices. Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, unique experiences, and warm hospitality make it a truly special destination. Venturing off the beaten path will reveal a side of Iceland that most visitors never see.
