The Savannah Bananas Announce 2024 Banana Ball World Tour Schedule; Tampa Bay to Launch Tour Festivities

The Savannah Bananas are bringing “The Greatest Show in Sports” (ESPN) to one million fans and six Major League Baseball stadiums across 29 cities and 20 states in 2024.

The tour begins with a return to George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa Bay on February 8 and a return visit to the Peoria Sports Complex the following weekend. The Bananas will celebrate the eighth anniversary of the Bananas team name by opening up Savannah games on February 23, and 24, and the official anniversary date of February 25. The Bananas will also return to Jacksonville, Fresno, Sacramento, Oklahoma City, Durham, Nashville, Indianapolis, and Des Moines in 2024.

Taken with the number one overall draft pick at the 2024 Banana Ball World Tour Draft, Tampa Bay, which hosted a pair of memorable Savannah Bananas contests during the 2023 Tour, will launch the 2024 version on February 8-10 at George Steinbrenner Field. in 2023, the Bananas upended the Party Animals 5-4 during their first night in Tampa Bay, before taking down the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) 8-0 the following night.

"Team Tampa Bay is beyond excited for this opportunity to help launch the 2024 Banana Ball World Tour in our own backyard," said Rob Higgins, Executive Director at the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. “As we saw with the two sold-out crowds at Steinbrenner Field in 2023, the community is yearning for more Banana Ball and we’re pumped to have that special opportunity again in just a few short months. We're thankful for Jesse Cole entrusting us to kick off their tour as only Tampa Bay can. We look forward to seeing all of Bananaland back in Tampa Bay."

The Bananas will play in their first Major League Baseball stadium on March 9 at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The Bananas will play at six MLB ballparks in total, with other stops being at Fenway Park in Boston, Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., Progressive Field in Cleveland, Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, and loanDepot Park in Miami.

“We continue to think big with Banana Ball and are thrilled to announce our most ambitious schedule yet,” said Bananas owner Jesse Cole.

“From playing in front of 500,000 fans in 2023 to now entertaining more than one million in 2024, we’re fired up to take this to the MLB level and visit some of the most beautiful and iconic ballparks, as well as watch the Party Animals become the headliner in four different cities. The 2024 Banana Ball World Tour will take our young sport to a higher level than ever before,” he continued.

The Party Animals will be taking over Historic Grayson Stadium again in 2024 hosting six games across two weekends. For the first time, they will be the headliners of a party-packed show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Greensboro, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina.

This year’s tour wraps up at loanDepot Park in Miami on October 12, before 2,500 fans pack their bags and set sail on the first ever Bananas cruise - Bananaland at Sea – from October 14 through October 18. Fans will on board with their favorite Banana Ball characters, players, dancers, performers, and mascots.

“We’ve been building Banana Ball since 2018 and set some lofty goals and as incredible as it feels to have accomplished so many of them so quickly, we’re still just in our first inning,” said Bananas’ head coach Tyler Gillum. “2024 will be the next step on the ladder of creating the Greatest Show in Sports. We can’t wait to put on a better show than ever for the fans!”

New for the 2024 tour, will be the eleventh rule of Banana Ball, the Golden Batter Rule. With this rule, one time a game a team may send any batter in the lineup to hit it any spot.

“The goal of this rule is to have your best hitter be able to hit when the game is on the line," said Jesse Cole. “We believe this will make each game as competitive as it gets until the final out of the game.”

The Bananas will face off against their rival, the Party Animals, and the newest Banana Ball team, The Firefighters. All three team rosters will be filled with the most entertaining and talented players in the world, including former MLB stars and celebrity guests. In 2023, former Major League stars Jake Peavy, Hunter Pence, Johnny Damon, Josh Reddick, and Barry Zito all joined the team during the tour.

“I think this year showed people that we aren’t just here to entertain but that we can actually play at a very high level too,” Bananas’ infielder Jackson Olson said. “2023 was life-changing for all of us but 2024 is about to be the biggest challenge yet and we’re all ready for it.”

When the Savannah Bananas are not on the road, they play their home games in front of a sold-out, 4,000-person crowd at Grayson Stadium in Savannah, Georgia. Bananas games at Grayson Stadium have been sold out for eight straight years.

About the Savannah Bananas

The Savannah Bananas are a baseball team based in Savannah, Georgia and play their home games at Historic Grayson Stadium, but they take the show on the road on their Banana Ball World Tour. The team has been featured on ESPN, Wall Street Journal, CNN, and Sports Illustrated and are made popular by their in-game entertainment and social media presence.

The team has been known as TikTok’s favorite team with over 7.5 million followers, millions more than every MLB team. The Bananas have been featured across the globe for everything from playing a game in kilts, using a Dancing First Base Coach, the first ever baseball player to wear stilts, players backflipping while catching fly balls, and a whole lot more.

The Bananas play their own version of baseball called Banana Ball, a fast-paced, action-packed style of baseball with rules that include no bunting, a two-hour time limit, fans catching foul balls for outs, batters stealing first base, and a one-on-one tiebreaker showdown at the end of the game if it’s tied

The 2022 World Tour was turned into a 5-part documentary, Bananaland, that can be seen on ESPN+. The show will return for season two, Bananaland: The Road to Cooperstown, and premiere exclusively on the Savannah Bananas YouTube channel.

The Savannah Bananas, known for their choreography and eccentric celebrations , are bringing their 2024 tour to Nashville.

They will return to the Nashville Sounds' home, First Horizon Park, where they played earlier this summer.

The team announced their world tour in a post to X Thursday. Along with playing at six Major League Baseball ballparks, the team will also be taking their wild antics to the sea.

The bananas aren't just playing baseball, they're playing banana ball, a twist to America's national pastime.

Interested in seeing the Bananas? Here's what you need to know.

What's special about Savannah Bananas and Banana ball?

The barnstorming baseball team has become popular for its antics and TikTok videos. In addition to players and umpires breaking into choreographed dance routines during games, other antics have included a pitcher pitching a ball that is on fire, a batter doing the splits while batting, a batter hitting while wearing stilts, a strikeout that took just over 20 seconds to complete and an outfielder catching a fly ball mid-backflip.

Banana ball includes nine rule changes. Unlike regular baseball, banana ball is scored by accumulating points for innings won, instead of runs scored. Additionally, if the hitter steps out of the box, it's a strike and if a hitter bunts, they are ejected from the game.

How to get tickets to see the Savannah Bananas in 2024

This isn't your average baseball game, and the ticketing process is no different.

Tickets for the 2024 Banana Ball World Tour go on sale two months before the event. First, you will need to join the 'ticket lottery list ' before it closes on Dec. 1, 2023. However, joining the list doesn't guarantee the opportunity to purchase tickets. A random drawing will take place about 2 months before the event. If you're selected, you'll have an opportunity to purchase tickets.

How to enter the Savannah Bananas ticket lottery list?

You will first need to submit your basic information, such as name, email address and city of interest. Once you have verified your information, you’ll receive confirmation that you’re eligible for the ticket lottery. Two months ahead of your desired event, you’ll receive updates as to how the random drawing will occur.

How much are tickets to see the Savannah Bananas?

Open seating tickets are $35 and VIB (very important banana) tickets are $100. VIB tickets grant early entry into the ballpark as well as meet and greet with the Bananas.

A unique game of baseball is coming to Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana next year.

The Savannah Bananas announced their Banana Ball world tour, heading to cities across the country, including in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

You may have seen the team on the internet because their "Banana ball" style of play has gone viral.

Some of the strange rules are:

Every inning is worth a point, so you win the inning. It's one point until the last inning, where every run counts.

Also, no bunting and if a fan catches a foul ball, it counts as an out!

Originally a member of the Coastal Plain League, a summer collegiate league featuring some of the best collegiate players in the country, the Bananas left league play in 2022 to focus on Banana Ball full time.

It isn't just rule changes that differentiate Banana Ball from a more traditional baseball game. Players performing choreographed dances, bats being set on fire and the Banana Nanas senior citizen dance team are all parts of the Bananas enhanced experience.

The team will play in Columbus at Huntington Park May 24-26. Next, they'll head to Indianapolis to play at Victory Field June 27-29. Then, they'll head to Louisville to play at Louisville Slugger Field Aug. 1-3 before heading to Cleveland to play at Progressive Field on Aug. 10.

How the Savannah Bananas baseball team is creating 'the greatest show in sports'

"GMA3" catches up with the viral baseball sensation on their nationwide tour.

When fans come home from seeing the Savannah Bananas play, founder Jesse Cole hopes they take away one thing: "That was the most fun I've ever had at a baseball game."

People around the world have gone bananas for the exhibition baseball team playing and entertaining with their own set of rules since 2016. That includes allowing players, coaches and umpires to break out into elaborate dance routines and other circus-like antics in the middle of the game.

"GMA3" reporter Will Ganss caught up with the team in Staten Island, New York, earlier this month along their sold-out tour.

"As a fan who played ball my whole life, I was bored by moments in the game," Cole, clad in his signature banana-colored suit and bowler hat, told ABC News. "I said, 'How do we make it nonstop entertainment, nonstop fun that fans literally can't look away?' You have to watch what's happening. And so it's just nonstop entertainment, and that's what makes it a lot of fun."

When they're not on the road, the Savannah Bananas play to sold-out crowds at home in Georgia at Grayson Stadium – the former home of Mets-affiliated minor league team, the Savannah Sand Gnats. They've also become a social media sensation, racking up more than 10 million followers and 200 million likes across all of their platforms.

But it wasn't always certain the Bananas would hit a grand slam with their fans.

When Cole and his wife, Emily, first came to Savannah, they didn't exactly receive a warm welcome, according to a YouTube video put out by the franchise looking back on their story in 2019. Some in the community were skeptical about the newcomers. Cole and his small team recall cold calling people to drum up excitement and ticket sales, but things were slow at first.

The couple says they had to sell their home and drain their savings to keep their dream afloat. It was a huge gamble, but it ultimately paid off.

After they launched a contest for the public to come up with a name for the team, everything changed, Cole says. Choosing the name Bananas received a lot of media attention, and not all of it was positive.

"We were crucified. However, we got attention. People were talking about us. And so the first few weeks afterwards, the publicity nationally was huge. Locally, they were ripping us apart, but everyone was talking about us," Cole says in the video.

PHOTO: The Savannah Bananas pose during a game in Staten Island on their country-wide tour.

The Savannah Bananas soon became a viral sensation online. Since that first sold-out home game, they've more than lived up to their name. They've got their own pep band, all-seniors dance team "The Banana Nanas," and even their own form of play called "Banana Ball" that's designed to keep the game moving, according to their website .

Banana Ball rules include a two-hour limit, no bunting (that will get you ejected from the game) and no mound visits, their website says. Games are won by points, instead of runs. The team that scores the most runs in an inning gets one point, except in the final inning when every run counts as one point. According to rule 8, if a fan catches a foul ball, it's an out.

On the road, excited fans pour into the stands, eager to see their online obsession take the field in person.

Silly, zany, at times maybe even outlandish – you can say many things about the Bananas – but boring isn't one of them.

"We're trying to create the greatest show in sports," Cole said.

ABC News Live

24/7 coverage of breaking news and live events

Savannah is central to the Bananas' future. What to expect from the baseball phenoms.

Owner jesse cole dropping hints about the direction of the popular team.

gone bananas tour

This commentary is written by opinion columnist Adam Van Brimmer.

For Savannah’s top banana, Jesse Cole , his greatest professional fear “is becoming predictable, irrelevant.”

Cole makes that comment in reference to the fan experience at Savannah Bananas’ games. But it is Cole’s unpredictable nature - he wants to literally change baseball as we know it rather than just rake in dollars with what is now a tried-and-true formula - that scares the peels off the bunches of Savannahians who have gone bananas for the Bananas.

Ever since Cole folded the Coastal Plain League team and announced the shift to a “ World Tour ” model, local fans have expressed angst about the Bananas’ future plans. The team is playing many more games outside Savannah in 2023 than in their home ballpark, Grayson Stadium - and with very public ambitions to play in Major League ballparks in 2024.

Even as the touring Bananas play more home games this year than the college team did during its seasons, worries persist. The Bananas are a phenomenon, likened to the Harlem Globetrotters or Cirque du Soleil . And like those highly successful businesses, the Bananas’ earning potential is not just local but global.

Cole has been hesitant to detail his long-range vision and how Savannah fits into those plans. He freely offers hints, though, and all indications are that Savannah is central to the team’s future.

At the risk of engaging in reckless speculation, here’s what I anticipate is Cole’s endgame.

Bananas are back: Everything you need to know about the Savannah Bananas' 2023 season

More on Bananas: ‘Get through the messy to get to the great.’ Savannah Bananas go all in on ‘banana ball’

He will expand Grayson Stadium

Cole is the first baseball man in decades to embrace the iconic ballpark. The last two owners of the Sand Gnats tried to get the city to build a new stadium . The refusal led to the team taking its balls and bats and going to Columbia, South Carolina .

For the Bananas, Grayson is part of the schtick, and there’s plenty of room to add seats. As detailed in a recent news story , legislation currently working its way through the Georgia General Assembly would give the city and the Bananas the ability to negotiate a 20-year lease - and give Cole the incentive to finance a stadium expansion on his own.

Grayson Stadium to expand? Proposed state law change could give Savannah Bananas options

By the time Grayson celebrates its centennial in 2026, it will seat 7,000-plus spectators. And that will lead to …

The formation of a banana ball league

The barnstorming Bananas have a designated foil - the Party Animals , a sister traveling team that is to the Bananas what the Washington Generals are to the Globetrotters.

The Bananas don’t play the Party Animals every night, though. Of the 80-plus games on the 2023 World Tour, 22 are against “challengers” - alumni or all-star squads and minor league teams.

“The other teams we’ve played, they say banana ball was the most fun they’ve ever had playing baseball,” Cole said. “The big test for us this year is in bringing in more challenger-type teams.”

Savannah Bananas origin story: What to know about the wackiest team in baseball

According to Cole, he frequently receives inquires from entrepreneurs in other cities, including several in the Southeast, about forming their own banana ball team. Asked directly if he envisions a banana ball league, Cole said “it’s an interesting concept and exciting for us to look at.”

A banana ball league is low risk for the Bananas. They already play 30-plus home games as part of the World Tour, and being the anchor of a regional league that plays in the summer months would still allow them to go on tour in the spring and fall.

As the banana ball league grows, the Bananas would adjust their schedule. In the meantime …

The Bananas go global

The Bananas will play in Major League Baseball stadiums starting in 2024. The ticket demand this year - they’ve gone to a lottery system - proves they can fill up the lower deck of even 35,000-plus seat ballparks.

Savannah Bananas in Yankee Stadium? Owner wants to see games in MLB stadiums, billion fans

Cole has said publicly he wants to play at Fenway Park in Boston, seating capacity 37,755. Atlanta’s Truist Park is another no-brainer, and the Bananas have already been a big draw in South Florida and Kansas City. The barnstorming team will introduce banana ball to the West Coast later this year.

From those markets, the Bananas can look overseas. The Japanese and Koreans are seam-heads. A Latin American tour makes sense.

Will banana ball lose its allure over time? Perhaps. For the foreseeable future, though, the Bananas are an emerging brand without a rival in the sports entertainment industry. Their success will benefit what Cole considers his No. 1 fans: Savannahians.

Savannah Bananas baseball team going on 2023 'coast to coast' tour, stopping in 21 states

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah's exhibition baseball team Banana Ball started as an idea , perhaps a crazy idea, to make baseball games more fun and more action-packed in a two-hour time limit.

The Savannah Bananas ' unconventional version of the game later became a "One City World Tour" in Mobile, Alabama, in 2021 and then a regional tour of seven cities in 2022 in the Southeast and Kansas City while keeping home base at Savannah's Grayson Stadium.

The Bananas went viral, packing stadiums and attracting millions of followers on social media both within and beyond America's borders with their wacky antics before, during and after games.

They even were the stars of their own documentary series "Bananaland" in August and September on the ESPN+ streaming service, with live games also shown on ESPN2.

They decided to go bigger, much bigger next year.

Is Barry Bonds still baseballs HR king?: Aaron Judge's 62nd homer transcends his own era

On Tuesday night, the organization revealed its 2023 Banana Ball World Tour schedule with 70 games in 33 cities in 21 states across the country – including 30 games in Savannah –  between Feb. 17 and Sept. 16 .

"We're coast to coast," said team owner Jesse Cole on Tuesday, acknowledging the national tour isn't worldwide quite yet. "We called it a world tour since Day 1 because we're naming it for where we're going, not for what we're doing right now."

The organization had on Aug. 24 announced that it was all in on the Savannah Bananas Premier Team, a professional traveling squad to play exhibitions of Banana Ball — most often against designated foil the Party Animals but also other challengers from independent pro minor leagues and international teams, Cole said.

The original Bananas, a collegiate summer league amateur team, existed from 2016-22 and won the Coastal Plain League championship in 2016, '21 and '22.

The Premier Team, a roster of former college and pro standouts with a sprinkling of former Major League Baseball players, will play a super-sized schedule in 2023.

Among the highlights:

Games in Triple-A cities including Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Des Moines, Sacramento, Syracuse, Nashville, Oklahoma City and Las Vegas.

The schedule concludes Sept. 16 at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York, on a collaborative effort with the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Yes, the Bananas and Party Animals will make it to Cooperstown.

Games in MLB spring training homes in West Palm Beach, Florida (Washington Nationals and Houston Astros); Tampa, Florida (New York Yankees); Scottsdale, Arizona (San Francisco Giants); and Peoria, Arizona (Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres).

Fan ball catch of a lifetime: Fan who caught Aaron Judge’s record-breaking 62nd home run unsure what he’ll do with it

The Bananas won't be playing games in major league ballparks, at least not in 2023. Cole said that several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, have expressed interest, and he visited Fenway Park last week.

"I think we both came to the agreement for 2023 there's too much to overcome. It's a big venture (at Fenway Park)," he said.

Cole said there's a very strong possibility the Bananas will play in big league parks in 2024. He wants to put on the best show possible, and the biggest stages will take more preparation.

"We know to put on the event we want to do, it takes a year-plus to plan at a major league park," Cole said. "When you're talking 35,000 to 40,000 people, plus everything we do pregame with the march around the stadium, there are so many logistics.

"The planning process is almost starting now to see if we can make it happen for 2024," he added.

The selection process for the 2023 slate left out at least 50 cities that had shown interest through their teams, city governments and tourism officials, he said. They also were contacted by potential suitors in Canada and Mexico.

Criteria included stadium size of at least 4,000 (like Grayson) and the capacity to handle a potential full house in customer-service aspects such as concessions, restrooms and parking. That's where Triple-A stadiums and their host cities have advantages.

The organization also is interested in expanding across America, and some areas just couldn't be worked out for 2023 but will be considered in the future. They did lock in the West Coast with four cities in California.

"I think the No. 1 thing we look for is a real interest and desire to have us," Cole said. with that, that gets you in the door."

The party travels by bus, plane

The Bananas' traveling party, whether by bus or plane, will include more than 100 players, coaches, staff, the pep band and a cast of characters including a princess, a breakdancing first base coach, a dancing umpire, the Banana Nanas senior dance team and the Man Nanas Dad Bod Cheerleading Squad.

"We are so focused on creating fans and playing the long game," Cole said. "We know our costs are going to be extravagent. Our costs are going to be through the roof. But if we create fans and sell out ballparks, and get 10,000, 15,000, we believe creating a long-term fan is valuable in what we're trying to do."

Cole concentrates more on the fan experience and leaves the bookkeeping to his administrative staff, beginning with team president Jared Orton.

"When you play the long game," Cole said, "if you don't make a lot of money but create a lot of fans and create an experience, everything takes care of itself. I've preached that since Day 1."

Cole said while there is a nucleus of players committed to the Premier Team and Party Animals, an invitation-only tryout is planned for November. Cole said hundreds of players, including former major leaguers, have contacted the organization.

Former MLB All-Star pitcher Bill Lee was a Bananas regular at age 75 in 2022 and plans to be back next year . Much-more recent big leaguers making guest appearances were Jonny Gomes, Jake Peavy, Jonathan Papelbon and former South Effingham High School star Josh Reddick, a longtime supporter of the Bananas. Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench also participated as a first-base coach in West Palm Beach last spring.

Cole said to expect more appearances by former big leaguers with the team, which is co-managed by 11-year MLB player Eric Byrnes.

There will be only one practitioner of Banana Ball, unlike, for example, the multiple international touring squads of the Harlem Globetrotters.

The Bananas look to keep expanding for years beyond 2023, returning to some cities and visiting new ones with no end date in sight.

"We're creating fans, we're having fun. So the more people we can bring to it, the better," Cole said. "There are millions of fans out there."

The team's first 2023 game is Feb 17, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Savannah's Gone Bananas: World Tour and Wilson Sporting Goods Deal

Savannah's Gone Bananas: World Tour and Wilson Sporting Goods Deal

gone bananas tour

If you aren't familiar with the Savannah baseball team that dresses in bright yellow and puts as much of an emphasis on fun as it does the actual game, you are missing out. The Savannah Bananas is not your typical baseball team. After they're recent catapult into internet fame (thanks, Tik-Tok!) and their fan-first mentality, it's no surprise the team is doing bigger things.

The players break dance, celebrate in the crowd, wear kilts, have a player on stilts and even pay homage to the loved "Banana Baby". They play Banana Ball, which is an approach to baseball unlike anything you've seen before. They're now on world tour across the country, with most of the games sold out or on a waiting list.

For their tour, they'll be sporting a bunch of new equipment thanks to a partnership with Wilson Sporting Goods. The partnership encompasses several of the Wilson family of brands – Wilson®, Louisville Slugger®, EvoShield® – making the company the team's exclusive equipment provider for gloves, bats, protective gear, uniforms, warm-up apparel, helmets, bags, and batting gloves. And of course, the designs feature the Bananas' fun and wild style, including customized "crazy gloves", never-before-seen bat decals and colorways, and leopard print catcher's gear.

gone bananas tour

In addition, EvoShield is the provider of Bananas fan apparel, which is available both at the team store and online.

"Partnering with Wilson Sporting Goods for all of our gear is a perfect match for us," said Savannah Bananas president Jared Orton. "Banana Ball needs the highest quality equipment on the planet. Wilson, Louisville Slugger and EvoShield are the best in the business. They're the top banana. We think the players and fans are going to love all the great gear and apparel that's available. There's nothing like it anywhere else."

"What's not to love about the Savannah Bananas?" asked Michael Markovich, Wilson's Global Director of Commercial Sales. "Harry Caray used to say 'You can't beat fun at the old ball park.' Every night, the Bananas are reinventing and elevating 'Fun At The Old Ball Park' to a new level.  We are honored they chose us to outfit every Banana in the Bunch."

About the Savannah Bananas

The Savannah Bananas are a baseball team based in Savannah, Georgia and play their home games at Historic Grayson Stadium, but they take the show on the road on their Banana Ball World Tour where they play their rivals the Party Animals and other professional teams in Challenger Series. The team has been featured on ESPN, Wall Street Journal, CNN, and Sports Illustrated and are made popular by their on-field hijinks and videos. The Bananas play their own version of baseball called Banana Ball which features new rules to make the game more fast-paced and entertaining.

My husband and I will be in moscow and wanted to take a side trip..understand Vladimir & Suzdal is quite nice. Do you prefer that to Sergiev Posad? Do you know any agencies that provide group tours or private tours to Vladimir & Suzdal? I understand that Patriarshy Dom is not operating its group tour during this time. Please advise. Any information you have to share would be helpful.

' class=

Vladimir & Suzdal are close to each other. you can use vladimir as base and also visit suzdal.

I will give you some links ( sorry i am out on tour and can't do more research).

http://gotorussia.vand.ru/ ( this is a tour operator offering 1 day tour from moscow to Vladimir , Suzdal or both) there are also combo tours with sergiev Possad with any of the above towns.

In order to organize tours from Vladimir, there are 3 major sites where you will get infor about the tours operating from Vladimir, how to reach there etc.

1. http://www.tour.vladimir.ru

2. http://www.vladimir-city.ru ( official site)

3. http://www.museum.vladimir.ru ( my recommended site)

<< go to english version / select option "services" / tours & excursions

My sugestion would be to go to Vladimir by train from moscow in the evening, take rest and then join a full day tour of vladimir - suzdal and return at night or next day morning. The train takes 2-3 hrs. Details available at http://www.poezda.net ( in english) .You can even book online

Trains are clean and safe. Hotel Vladimir at Vladimir is ok. near the train station. you can find the contacts in google. ( book the tickets in advance.)

You can visit sergiev possad ( quite near to moscow) using the moscow based tour agency mentioned above. They offer day trips to Sergivev possad.

If you want to search the net further, go to http://www.yandex.ru ( russian website) and type in "vladimir tour" or "suzdal tour" in ENGLISH. This will give you many sites with english option

have a nice trip

' class=

will you consider a DIY trip?

from moscow to vladimir take a long-distance train or a suburban (electrichek) train from kursky station. there are several in the daytime/early evening. certain long-distance trains are faster and can arrive in 2 hours. suburbans take 3 hrs. probably less complicated to buy suburban ticket than one of a long-distance train (where you need passport, specify what type of seat, which train number...) and also cheaper

once in vladimir you can walk around for 1-2 hours or even have your dinner there. then take a bus (avtobus) at the bus station just up a slope from the train station. the bus runs every 30-60mins till late. i took the one around 8-9pm. and the evening buses go directly into city centre of suzdal. the trip is about 40-60mins

the tricky part is if you reserve your accomodation in suzdal with a guesthouse/B&B, it may not be easy to locate. the one i had booked did not have a sign hanging at the door. i walked around for about an hour and at last had to find a local to talk to my host over phone and then she kindly led me to the right wooden house

Moscow Lubyanka Inside Main Building

Lubyanka: Inside the Story of Moscow’s Infamous Building and District

Published: June 15, 2021

There is always history surrounding us. In a city like Moscow, this can seem overwhelmingly apparent. Moscow has many imposing buildings from many eras – some are immediately recognizable and others only invite wonder as to what stories lay behind their beauty or grime.

Lubyanka is the name commonly used to refer to the building that has historically housed the security services of the USSR and modern Russia, from the Cheka to the KGB to the FSB. The name has also, for a much longer history, been applied to the adjacent square and surounding neighborhood.

The Lubyanka Building

by Alyssa Rider

The building now known as Lubyanka was originally several buildings.

The two largest were originally designed by Alexander Ivanov and were separated by a street. The largest of these two was built in 1898 and the smaller in 1902 by the All-Russia Insurance Company. Insurance and banking were rapidly growing and profitable industries at that time. Insurance companies would often invest their substantial cash holdings in real estate. Thus, most of the buildings were built as residential and the space was rented for profit.

Perhaps ironically, the original, much more ornate façade of the main building included two female figures representing Justice and Solace.

Moscow Lubyanka Inside

The buildings were seized following the 1917 revolution and became the headquarters for the secret police – the Cheka at the time, though it has served in the same role for the various iterations of the Soviet, and now Russian, state security services – from the OGPU and NKVD, the KGB, and now the FSB.

Lubyanka prison was established in 1920 inside a two story structure adjacent to the main buildings. It had originally been a hotel built, again, by the All-Russia Insurance Company. It was soon expanded to six floors. Jokes referred to it as the “tallest building in Moscow,” as one could purportedly see Siberia (and the Gulag system) from its basement, as that was the fate that awaited most that saw the inside of the prison’s walls.

In 1940, Aleksey Shchusev was commissioned to enlarge the complex to accommodate the increasing amount of staff required to handle the Great Purge. The staff had grown from 2,500 in 1928 to nearly 34,000 in 1940.

An extra floor was added, and the main building expanded horizontally, consuming and incorporating nearby buildings. This expansion was interrupted by the Nazi invasion, leaving the facade lopsided until it was completed under the orders of Yuri Andropov in the 1980s.

The building now contains FSB headquarters, a group of holding cells, the headquarters of the Border Guard Service, and two museums: one devoted to the KGB/FSB and one dedicated to the old prison (neither is actually open to the public).

The Museums Inside the Lubyanka Building

The museums offer regularly updated exhibits, both historical and modern. The Museum of the KGB, now known as the Historical Demonstration Hall of the FSB of Russia, is located inside the Lubyanka complex, and contains four rooms and over two thousand exhibits.

Exhibits cover the history of Russian and Soviet counterintelligence, and there are documents from the times of both Peter and Catherine the Great, as well as the Napoleonic War and WWI. There are separate stands with information on events relating to mass repressions, as well as a room dedicated to WWII. The museum also includes a significant amount of technical equipment that has been used for reconnaissance and counterintelligence purposes, as well as more recent documents relating to FSB operations.

Moscow Lubyanka Inside Museums

The prison museum has never been open to the public and is maintained only for FSB personnel and high-ranking government officials. The “Demonstration Hall” was opened to the public in 1989. Accessing it was still difficult, as it is located inside the FSB complex and tours were offered almost exclusively through private tour companies and only after screening potential visitors. In recent years, the tours became rarer and today this museum, too, is officially closed to outside visitors.

Lubyanka: Fountain, Statue, or Abstract Nothing?

The names were not the only thing that changed. In 1835, a fountain was installed on the square. This fountain was called Nikolsky Fountain (its name borrowed from the same gates mentioned above), and was designed by the Italian sculptor Giovanni Vitali and supplied potable water to the neighborhood.

Nikolsky Fountain is one of the oldest in Moscow, and it still stands, but no longer on Lubyanka. It was moved in the 1930s to a new location in the courtyard of Alexandrinsky Palace in Neskuchny Garden, part of the Gorky Park complex in central Moscow.

Moscow Lubyanka Inside Dzerzhinsky Removal

In 1958, a 15-ton iron statue of Dzerzhinsky, known as “Iron Felix” was installed in its former place on Lubyanka. This statue, in turn, was toppled in a public demonstration after the fall of the Soviet Union. It was transferred by the Russian Academy of Arts to the Muzeon, also known as Fallen Monument Park, to be joined by many other Soviet statues removed or toppled at that time.

In 2017, a general renovation of Lubyanka and the surrounding traffic patterns was announced by the city. It was debated if the fountain or even Iron Felix should be brought back. In the end, however, the space was enlarged and landscaped with flat, circular geometric shapes. The space, used and undecorated, remains largely unused.

In 2021, another effort to bring back the statue was proposed by the modern Communist Party in Moscow. The mayor initially agreed to allow the issue to be voted on in a referendum, but soon reversed his decision and killed the initiative.

The Solovetsky Stone

The Solovetsky Stone is a monument located across the street from Lubyanka Square in a separated area known as Musuem Park. It was created in commemoration of the political prisoners who were repressed under the GULAG system.

The Solovetsky Stone is a large granite block brought from the Solovetsky Islands, where the Solovetsky Special Purpose Camp operated in the 1920s and 1930s as part of the GULAG system. It was officially opened on October 30, 1990.

Founding such a memorial had become a matter of public discussion a few years earlier, in the late 1980s. The Memorial Society, now a globally-respected NGO, began a petition with the goal of creating a monument of political repression in 1987, and in 1988, a Public Council for the creation of such a monument was formed. A contest was also held in 1988, wherein people could submit their monument ideas and suggest locations, but a winner for this contest was never chosen.

St. Petersburg Solovetsky Stone

The specific stone idea came from a memorial created in the village of Solovetsky in 1989 by former Solovetsky prisoners, many of whom stayed there after their release, and members of the Memorial Society. Members of the Society from Arkhangelsk, St. Petersburg, and Moscow liked the idea so much that they acquired boulders to place in their own cities.

The opening of the Moscow memorial on served as a triumph not only in its own right, but also marked the first official recognition of the Day of Victims of Political Repression since that day began to be recognized by dissidents in 1974. Every year on this day, people now gather near the Solovetsky Stone to mourn. Since 2007, a practice called the ‘Return of Names’ has taken place on the 29th from 10 AM to 10 PM – people from across the city gather in a long line to take turns reading the names of Muscovites who were executed. Similar actions take place in many other cities and even other countries, on this day or the next.

The Solovetsky Stone has also become an unofficial site for civil protest, serving not only as a memorial but as a symbol for modern-day political dissonance.
