'The Grand Tour' host James May has an eye-opening take on EV ownership realities

B ritish automotive authority and TV host James May is known for his colorful personality, eager fascination and an eclectic point of view on a wide range of cars from old-timey classics, to the latest and greatest in supercars and consumer-focused compacts.

May's own personal collection is just as eclectic. Alongside gas-guzzling big boy toys like Ferraris, Porsches and vintage motorcycles, previous highlights of his garage included EVs and alternative fuel cars like the Tesla Model S and the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai.

In a recent episode of The Intercooler podcast , the former 'Top Gear' host revealed that he took delivery of a new Tesla Model 3, but aired out his grievances with EV ownership.

Though there are things that he loves about electric cars, such as the ability to run silently - charging is the culprit that he feels is holding the technology back.

May said that the infrastructure to handle mass EV adoption would need to be much more expansive, with the United Kingdom alone requiring "millions" of chargers if the current technology does not evolve. He presented his point of view on the issue, suggesting that electric car technology should be given a work-around.

"What people call 'range anxiety,' I actually think is recharging anxiety," James May said on the podcast. "If an electric car had a small battery [...] it's only got a range of say 150 miles, but it recharges in one minute - I'd be delighted with that."

'The Grand Tour' host also pointed out that the current technology of EVs is built around the realities of the charging infrastructure, which prioritizes the need to qualm customer's built-in range anxiety.

"The reason why we have cars like my outgoing Tesla Model S, bloody huge thing that weighs slightly more than a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow [...] is because of that massive battery," May said. "It has to have the massive battery because it's an acknowledgment that charging is an issue. And even with massive batteries, the range of electric cars is not that impressive - compared with my [Volkswagen] Polo, which will do easily 450 miles on a tank."

  • The EV industry is facing an unusual new problem

Although James May has been a advocate for alternative fuels like hydrogen and electric cars both on TV and online, he feels that he is a "bad evangelist" for the electric car, citing his unique, "privileged" situation that isn't exactly representative of the average motorist.

"I like being part of the experiment, I feel an obligation as a car enthusiast to do my bit," May said. "People like me are bad evangelists for the electric car because I have two homes. That's my most regular journey between both and I can charge at both indoors, [...] they're only 100 miles apart and I've got numerous other cars to use if I need to go somewhere else."

"That doesn't mean [electric cars] are ready for widespread adoption yet."

May also touched on a variety of other topics with hosts and Dan Prosser and Andrew Frankel on the The Intercooler podcast, including the possibility of EVs hitting the collector car market, as well as his prolific TV career on Top Gear and Amazon Prime's The Grand Tour.

Good episode. The lawyers in the Tesla Model X trial were funny. They have once again proved that they are ambitious but void. It is true that James flowing at the end of the episode recalls the end of Top Gear Special Vietnam.

Solid episode, I got Vietnam flashbacks at the end xD. However, Paris Hilton’s presence was just annoying to me, she looked so out of place.

What if Tesla offered a second bodystyle variant for the Model 3 looking like a performance-focused estate?

Tesla is known for keeping its model lineup simple and tidy focusing on economies of scale. Still, fans of the EV brand can’t help but imagine a broader range with additional bodystyles, such as the Tesla Model 3 GT depicted here. The fictional concept is the work of independent designer Sugarchow, proposing a roomier alternative to the popular electric sedan.

The designer’s goal was to create a “grand hatchback” (or something between the former BMW 3-Series GT and its Touring counterpart, if you will), that could combine the cargo space of an estate with the attractive lines of a coupe. He based his project on the recently facelifted Tesla Model 3 , retaining the front portion of the bodywork intact, while sharing the same wheelbase.

The highlight of the Tesla Model 3 GT (Grand Tour) is the redesigned roofline and tail, transforming it from a three-box sedan to a two-box sporty estate. The greenhouse and the way it merges with the inclined rear glass is reminiscent of the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake , bringing an exotic flair to the EV. A large portion of the black-painted roof is covered in glass, shedding more light inside the cabin. The prominent rear spoiler formed by a continuation of the pillars might look cool but it probably does a great job in obstructing rear visibility.

Setting aside any styling objections, the end result looks like a legit competitor to the Zeekr 01 which is currently available in China. Such an offering could slot between the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y in terms of practicality, targeting those who prefer low-slung vehicles with a larger and more practical boot.

The Tesla Model 3 GT Render Is A Sporty Wagon For The EV Era

Besides the “Red Flame Spec” with black wheels, Sugarchow shared two more derivatives of the Model 3 GT on his Instagram profile . The orange-painted model looks like a standard spec, while the grey version with the copper-finished wheels and the bumper extensions is his vision of a performance-focused trim. The Tesla Model 3 Super GT, as its creator calls it, was envisioned with the electric powertrain of the upcoming Tesla Roadster , potentially blessing it with hypercar-beating performance figures.

Of course, all these renderings are products of the designer’s imagination, with close to zero chances of becoming reality. However, while Tesla is not expected to expand the Model 3 lineup anytime soon, digital models like these could inspire independent builders for unique coachbuilt projects.

The Tesla Model 3 Gets Digital Conversion Into A Sporty Hatchback, Hopefully Inspiring Next EV

This wagon/hatch style Model 3 Grand Touring EV concept is what happens with digital artists let their creative juices flow unrestrained.

Tesla revealed an updated and streamlined 2024 Model 3 electric car in September 2023. With a refreshed look, new tech, and better batteries to offer, the new Model 3 was introduced in Denmark . But at its core, it remains a compact four-door fastback family sedan. Sugarchow, a digital graphic artist on Instagram, had a go at imagining some other body style possibilities for the new Model 3, and it looks amazing.

On their Instagram page, SugarDesign_1 you can find three versions of a Tesla Model 3 hatchback design. The first is a hatch, the second is a sporty grand hatchback, while the third packs a mean punch.

A Model 3 Hatchback For Everyone

The front of the Model 3 remains largely unchanged in the renders . Sugarchow has significantly restyled the rear of the electric car. The roofline of the digital rendering of the Model 3 hatch extends further back, rather than sloping down aggressively from the B-pillar. The roof does indeed slope down, eventually meeting a more upright rear windscreen. However, to keep the proportions intact, Sugarchow has added a floating rear spoiler that seems to offer two functions. The spoiler extends the roofline further back, integrating into the floating wing. Secondly, the wing would also help with airflow by reducing drag, and improving the EV’s energy efficiency.

This Is The Body Style Car Designers Never Look Forward To Making

Sugarchow calls it the Tesla Model 3 GT. He described the vehicle as “an intermediate option between Wagon and Hatchback for the home users.” The subtle changes are quite tasteful. Some users even commented “A Tesla will never look that good”, and “So much better than the Sedan”. One even compared it to an Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato and we can see the resemblance. The orange paint is what helps the Model 3 GT concept stand out, a color we wish was on Tesla’s palette.

The Model 3 Grand Hatchback Wagon

The Tesla Model 3 Grand Tour Red Flame Spec is what Sugarchow has named his second creation. Painted in a deep, striking shade of red, the Model 3 Grand Tour Red Flame is supposed to be a grand hatchback. Sugarchow wanted to keep the storage space of a wagon with the Model 3 Grand Tour, but also integrate the appealing sloping coupe roof.

2024 Tesla Model 3: Everything Confirmed So Far

Full disclosure, we can't notice any major change between the Red Flame Spec and the orange Model 3 GT. The only things that set them apart are the black wheels.

The Model 3 Super GT Packs Tesla Roadster Performance

The third design by Sugarchow is probably the most interesting. The digital auto design imagined a Model 3 hatch but the powertrain of the promised Tesla Roadster. The designer captions the post saying “Imagine the Model 3 built on Tesla Roadster. How fast it could be?”

The Model 3 Super GT, while it looks the same as the other two designs, has some subtle differences. The Model 3 finished in satin gray features a black splitter to improve front downforce. The floating spoiler has a larger wing on top that would add more downforce , but would surely compromise the vehicle’s range.

Two stabilizer fins on the roof will help clean the airflow as well. The forged wheels finished in gold sit in flared arches at the rear that neatly blend into the rear bumper. For even more aero performance, Sugarchow has added an aggressive diffuser.

That aero package would be necessary to keep the Model 3 on the ground. If it uses the projected performance of the Tesla Roadster , it would be quite the family wagon. The second-gen Roadster promised a 200 kWh battery, a range of 620 miles, and three electric motors that help it sprint from 0-60 in 1.9 seconds. The SpaceX package would do the same in 1.1 seconds.

Tesla has been busy developing the updated Model 3 and trying to get the Cybertruck into production. The Roadster was introduced as a concept in 2014 and promised it would go on sale soon. However, nearly 10 years since it was showcased to the public, the Roadster has not seen the light of day as Elon Musk continues to delay the timeline for the next-gen Roadster.

Tesla model 3 performance price hiked $1k again, under a month after release.

Avatar for Jameson Dow

The refreshed Model 3 Performance was released on April 23 , but less than a month after release it’s having its price hiked again, for a second time.

The Model 3 Performance just got a big refresh , after the Model 3’s overall “Highland” refresh .

The refresh includes more horsepower (up to 510hp now, and 0-60 of 2.9 seconds), some exterior changes, and lots of other underlying changes to make the car better at performance applications.

And it also included a very attractive price – one which was actually cheaper than the lower-spec Long Range Model 3 after taking tax credits into account, since the Performance qualifies for the US EV tax credit and the Long Range model does not.

As a result it immediately garnered rave reviews both from online observers who note its impressive specs and value proposition compared to competing vehicles, and from the few  car reviewers who Tesla deigned to allow to review the vehicle  ahead of its release .

But perhaps those reviews were too good, and Tesla decided they could command a higher price for these vehicles. As a result, just 3 days after release, Tesla hiked the price of the Model 3 Performance by $1,000 . At the same time, it reduced the price of some paint and interior options as well.

Now, we’re having a little déjà vu as almost the exact same thing has happened again.

Today, Tesla hiked the price of the Model 3 Performance by another $1,000, up to $54,490, just $10 less than the $55k limit to access the EV tax credit.

Top comment by Fluffy Cat

Supply and demand. I see this as more support for the idea that there will be further Model Y drops/incentives next month as the quarter ends. And even more as the year goes on, inventory piles up, and we get closer to Model Y Juniper. Still makes it a hard sell with how wacky this company is operated right now.

Again, just as last time and perhaps to compensate, Tesla lowered the price of some other options. Now, the “Black and White Interior” is included in the base price of the vehicle, instead of being a $1,000 option as it was yesterday. So if you were going to get the black & white interior, the car will cost the same as it did yesterday, but the standard black interior now costs $1,000 more.

The Model 3 Performance is still slightly cheaper than the Long Range model, assuming you qualify for the $7,500 US EV tax credit. If you do, the base price of the Performance model is $47,490, whereas the base price of the Long Range model is $47,740 – $250 more. The Performance model comes with more performance, but the Long Range model does have a longer range, at 341 miles rather than the 296 miles of the Performance model with its stickier tires, bigger motors and so on.

However, since the tax credit is attainable even on non-qualifying cars  via a lease , the lease rates for the RWD ($299/mo) and Long Range AWD ($439/mo) are still significantly cheaper than the Performance AWD model ($616/mo) – and that last number, for the Performance model, is $50 more per month than it was yesterday.

Finally, Tesla also changed some pricing for other Model 3 options, increasing the cost of the “Black and White” interior to $2k, from the $1,500 price it was previously, for both the RWD and Long Range models.

A Tesla Model 3 is prowling the streets of Moscow [Video]

You probably wouldn’t think of Russia as much of an electric vehicle hotspot, and you’d be correct. According to Autostat (via The Barrel ), only 82 EVs were sold in the vast country in 2017 (meanwhile, in neighboring China, 603,300 plug-in passenger cars were sold).

Above: Model 3 at the Moscow Tesla Club (Instagram:  moscowteslaclub.ru )

However, Tesla has a small but devoted fan base here. Igor Antarov, of the Moscow Tesla Club , somehow managed to bring a Model 3 to Russia - even though the new EV isn’t yet officially on sale outside the US. In a recent video, he takes us for a ride around Moscow, and asks people on the street how much they know about EVs.

The first stop is a snowy Supercharger - the first and only one in the country (apparently, it’s so new it isn’t even on Tesla’s official map). After a top-up, we’re off to the Arbat, a famous pedestrian street where one can encounter visitors from all over Mother Russia - including folks from small villages who Igor assumes have never seen an EV. How much do these Average Ivans know about Tesla and electric vehicles? You’ll have to watch the video to find out, but you may be pleasantly surprised.

Above: Inside the first-ever Tesla Model 3 in Russian along with reactions from locals (Youtube: Igor Antarov )

The Moscow Tesla Club also recently staged a drag race between a Model 3 and a Chevy Bolt (badged as the Opel Ampera-E in European markets) on the streets of Moscow (as reported by Teslarati ). Yes, on the streets of Moscow - in traffic, in broad daylight. What fun!

Of course, Model 3 and the Bolt have been compared and contrasted by a number of media outlets. When it comes to range, features and general price class, the two are perhaps somewhat roughly comparable, in a way (maybe). However, I think it safe to tell you, with no spoiler alert required, that in this particular match-up, the Tesla left the Chevy in the dusty snow.

Above: Tesla Model 3 goes up against  the Opel Ampera-E (the European version of the  Chevy Bolt) on the streets of Moscow (Youtube: KindelTech )

The Moscow Tesla Club’s Model 3 has a rated 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds. In this race, it reached 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds, while the Chevy Bolt made it in 7.3 seconds. However, the DragTimes YouTube channel (via Teslarati ) has clocked a Model 3 at 4.6 seconds. And remember, Elon Musk has promised that “much faster versions” will eventually be available.

Tesla Model 3 fire in Moscow: What we know so far

' src=

This past Saturday, news broke about a Tesla crashing into a parked tow truck and bursting into flames on a motorway in Moscow, Russia. Particularly notable about the incident was that after the initial crash, explosions racked the already burning electric car.

A number of developments have emerged about the story so far, which clarified initial misconceptions about the incident, from the make of the vehicle to the injuries incurred by its occupants.  With this in mind, Teslarati has compiled this quick guide about what is currently known about this crash and its ensuing fiery aftermath.

The crash

A video of the accident taken from what appears to be a security camera showed the electric sedan passing a first stopped vehicle that had broken down and catching the corner of a tow truck that was sticking out into the adjacent lane. In a statement to CrimeRussia , Aleksey Tretyakov, the vehicle’s owner, noted that he had been traveling at 100 km/h, the speed limit in the area. The impact from the collision was enough to push the tow truck forward into the central dividing wall.

A video of the exact moment the Tesla crashed into the tow truck could be viewed below.

The make of the car

Initial reports that emerged following the accident tagged the Tesla as a Model S. With more videos of the crash’s aftermath emerging online, it now appears that the electric car involved in the accident was a Model 3, at least based on the shape of the vehicle’s taillights and headlights.

The fire

Videos of the Tesla on fire and the explosions that followed emerged on the heels of the accident. These clips, which were separate from the footage of the electric car crashing into the parked tow truck, showed a vehicle that was already ablaze. Two explosions could be seen in the videos, which resulted in parts of the electric car flying to the air.

Quite interestingly, the explosion within the vehicle seemed to have happened after the tow truck that the Tesla crashed into had been moved (the heavy vehicle does not seem to be in the vicinity when the explosions happened). As observed by Tesla Motors Club member KarenRei , the nature of the explosion in the Model 3 looked notably similar to an explosion that happens when an airbag explodes. A video of such an incident could be viewed here.

The injuries

Initial reports of the injuries that resulted from the accident pointed to the driver of the Tesla and his two children being severely injured. Russian media outlet IXBT.com , for one, noted that Tretyakov was in “intensive care” due to the crash. Later reports would prove this to be false. Speaking with CrimeRussia , the Tesla owner noted that both of his legs were broken due to the accident, but his two children were “practically not injured.”

Update : While CrimeRussia noted in its coverage of the incident that the Model 3 driver had two broken legs as a result of the crash, it appears that the news agency misquoted the Tesla owner’s statements. Vladimir Grinshpun , a native Russian speaker, noted in a message to Teslarati that the Tesla owner clearly stated during a video interview with the news agency that he had one broken leg and a broken nose due to the accident. A video of this interview could be accessed here .

A video depicting what appeared to be Tretyakov hobbling away from his vehicle as his two children walked ahead of him has also been aired on Russian media outlet Russia 24 .

On Autopilot

Being a Tesla crash, it was not surprising to note that several reports promptly related the crash to the potential use of Autopilot. Discussing the incident, longtime TMC member mongo noted that since Teslas in Russia are imported through a third party, there was likely no Navigate on Autopilot support in the area. Thus, functions of Autopilot would likely be limited to basic features such as lane-keeping.

This was mentioned by Tretyakov himself, who noted that he was using a “driver-assist” feature and a “trimmed” version of Autopilot when the accident happened. The Tesla owner added that he was holding the wheel in the moments leading up to the crash, though he also admitted that he did not notice the parked tow truck on the road. Based on the video of the Tesla’s crash, it appears that either the vehicle or Tretyakov engaged the brakes just before the car hit the parked truck.

Tesla’s statement

Tesla is yet to issue a formal statement about the incident, though the electric car maker has recently published its most recent vehicle accident and fire data. Tesla notes that from 2012 – 2018, “there has been approximately one Tesla vehicle fire for every 170 million miles traveled. By comparison, data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and U.S. Department of Transportation shows that in the United States there is a vehicle fire for every 19 million miles traveled.” It should be noted that Tesla’s data set includes instances of vehicle fires caused by structure fires, arson, and other things unrelated to the vehicle, which account for about 15% of Tesla vehicle fires over this time period.
