Pedro, Devo, Karros - and Eddie Reed - among top all-time Great Falls pro ballplayers

great falls voyagers stats

No one has seen more professional baseball games in Great Falls than Jim Eakland, who has been a regular at Legion Park (now Centene Stadium) since 1973.

He’s seen a lot of teams and a lot of ballplayers. One stands out.

Not because of the way he could crush a baseball.

But because of his kindness.

“Eric Karros is the one I liked the most,” said Eakland, for decades the curator of the Great Falls Voyagers Hall of Fame Room. “He's just a very nice guy.”

Karros, who smashed 284 homers among his 1,724 major-league hits, was no doubt a great ballplayer. As a first-year pro with the Great Falls Dodgers in 1988, he batted .366 with 25 extra-base hits – including 12 homers and 55 RBIs in 66 games.

Karros is one of the finest professional players in Great Falls baseball history, which dates back more than 125 years. The city has fielded a pro team continuously since 1969. Thus, the Voyagers are celebrating the 50th year of affiliated pro ball in 2019.

In honor of that milestone and to spotlight the current Pioneer League season, which begins Friday night when the defending league champion Voyagers play host to the Missoula Osprey at Centene Stadium, we’re identifying the top 10 pro ballplayers in city history.

It’s a list that takes into account both what the men accomplished in Great Falls and beyond. More than 200 ballplayers who once toiled for Great Falls have reached the major leagues, and several are now in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Karros could really hit.

And the former UCLA star hit it off with Jim Eakland’s son, Keith, a familiar figure at the ballpark who despite several physical and mental challenges has for years been a beacon of happiness who will always root, root, root for the home team.

The only Pioneer League home games Jim has missed since 1973 were when Keith was hospitalized in Seattle following surgery. Keith still has many of the signed baseball cards Karros and other memorabilia sent by Karros when he was moving up the minor-league ladder and eventually starring in the big leagues.

THE 1988 GREAT FALLS Dodgers were one of the best teams in city history, a league championship outfit with six future major-leaguers that finished with a 52-17 record.

But the next year’s team was even better.

“We were loaded,” Erik Madsen said.

Madsen, a 1985 graduate of C.M. Russell High, starred while playing American Legion ball for the Great Falls Chargers and then pitched at Notre Dame. But if Madsen, who signed as free agent with the Dodgers, was a longshot to make it in pro ball, many of his teammates were hot prospects.

“Our team was stacked with four first-round draft picks,” Madsen said. “It was a fun year, that’s for sure."

The 1989 Great Falls club set a league record for winning percentage with a 53-14 record.

“It was a big surprise to us if we ever lost,” said Madsen, who along with Mike Tucker (1978 Great Falls Giants) and Ron Morales (2007-08 Great Falls Voyagers) are the only Electric City Legion standouts who also played professionally in their hometown.

Three members of the 1989 Great Falls squad reached the majors, including a speed merchant who made our Top 10 list.

“Tom Goodwin was clearly the best player,” said Madsen, now an executive at Davidson Companies in Great Falls.

“The year before we were in professional ball he was playing for Fresno State,” Madsen said. “We played a regional game and I was in the bullpen in right field and Tom was up to bat. He hit a line drive over the first baseman’s head and I can remember as the outfielder got the ball I was yelling “home, home, home” as he was about past the second baseman. Just because he was so fast.

“And he was just a great guy when I played with him in Great Falls.”

Goodwin stole a league-record 60 bases in 1989. He was caught just eight times.

Goodwin, these days a first-base coach for the Boston Red Sox, collected more than 1,000 hits and stole 369 bases during a 14-year big-league career. He had 39 career triples and 24 homers.

For Great Falls, Goodwin batted .308 with 17 extra-basehits and 55 runs scored in 63 games.

FOR SHEER STAR POWER , not even the record-setting 1989 team could compare with the 1990 Great Falls club.

In fact, two members of our Top 10 list played here that season – including the best Great Falls pitcher of all-time.

“The great Pedro,” said Jim Eakland.

Pedro Martinez was an 18-year-old in the summer of 1990, when he fashioned an 8-3 record and struck out 82 in 77 innings pitched.

“He was tall and slim,” Jim said. “Very slim. If he turned sideways there would be no shadow.”

Pedro, now an analyst for MLB Network, cast a very long shadow in pro baseball. His Hall-of-Fame career totals: 219-100 record, 2.93 ERA, 3,154 strikeouts in 2,827 innings.

An eight-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner, Pedro was among the best of the best in the Pioneer League. And so was his teammate, outfielder Raul Mondesi.

“Just a manchild,” said Madsen, who rubbed elbows with both in spring training. “I knew both Raul and Pedro a little bit. Good guys, too.”

Mondesi was 19 for the 1990 Great Falls team when he batted .303 with 22 extra-base hits – including eight home runs – and 30 stolen bases in 44 games.

Mondesi went on to a big-league career that included 1,589 hits, including 271 homers, 229 steals and a .273 average. One of his sons, Adalberto Mondesi, is currently a talented young shortstop with the Kansas City Royals.

“It was pretty easy to tell the guys that were going to make it big,” Madsen said. “You could tell. Pedro and Mondesi had it.”

THERE IS ONLY ONE player on our Top 10 list who didn’t play in the major leagues. But Eddie Reed certainly could have if the circumstances had been different.

A humble superstar from Alabama, Reed died 10 years ago. He was a hard-hitting outfielder with Great Falls minor-league teams from 1958-62. Blessed with excellent speed and a strong throwing arm, Reed played just after baseball's segregation era for such famous teams as the Birmingham Black Barons and Memphis Red Sox.

Famous figures who also played for the Black Barons included Satchel Paige, Willie Mays and a musically gifted outfielder named Charley Pride, who eventually made his way to Montana.

So did Eddie Reed.

He played in the Cleveland Indians organization. Then he was signed by Brooklyn, whose owner was Walter O'Malley and whose former general manager, Branch Rickey, had helped break baseball's color barrier with the signing of Jackie Robinson in 1946.

Reed was a 6-2, 175-pounder who quickly became a crowd favorite at Legion Park. And no wonder. He batted better than .300 every season he played for the Electrics. In 1959 he was named team MVP and made the Pioneer League All-Star Team. And in 1961 he set a club record with 20 home runs.

Like Reed, Bill Lachemann came to Great Falls to play ball. Lachemann, a longtime professional coach and scout has maintained a home here ever since. He still works for the L.A. Angels.

Reed and Lachemann were teammates on Great Falls teams in 1959 and 1960.

"I was a catcher, a decent player," said Lachemann in an interview after Reed died. "But I wasn't like Eddie. I was nowhere near him.

"I've been in baseball for a long time, and I'd say of all the ballplayers I saw, including the major leagues, Eddie was in the top 10. He used to hit 'em over the light posts here at our ballpark. Tremendous power, an above-average arm, good speed — and he just loved baseball."

HERE IS THE REST of our Top 10 list of greatest of Great Falls baseball players:

BOBBY COX . The future Hall-of-Fame manager of the Atlanta Braves was a hard-hitting third baseball for the 1963 Great Falls Electrics. In 109 games, the 22-year-old Cox hit .337 with 31 doubles, 19 homers and 85 RBIs. He went on to a big-league managerial record of 2,499-1,999. He led the Braves to 14 straight division championships and a World Series title.

JOSE OFFERMAN . As a 19-year-old Great Falls infielder in 1988, Offerman batted .331 with a record 57 stolen bases (Goodwin broke the record the next summer). Offerman went on to a 15-year career in the majors and amassed 1,551 hits and 172 steals.

JACK CLARK . He was 17 in the summer of 1973 when playing for the Great Falls Giants. Jim Eakland’s Hall of Fame Room includes a copy of Clark’s first two-week paycheck, which totaled $146.24. The young slugger batted .321 with 20 doubles, 9 homers and 54 RBIs as a 17-year-old. He went on to an 18-year career in the big leagues and belted 340 home runs. In his last season of pro ball, 1992, Clark received a reported $2.9 million salary while playing for the Red Sox.

JOHN ROSEBORO . A 20-year-old catcher for the 1953 Great Falls Electrics, few could have predicted such amazing success for this player. Roseboro batted .310 with 12 doubles, 7 triples and 8 homers for Great Falls. Four years later he broke into the big leagues with Brooklyn, beginning a 14-year career in the majors during which he collected 1,206 hits – including 190 doubles and 104 homers – and caught such illustrious pitchers as Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale while playing in four World Series.

MIKE DEVEREAUX . This young outfielder from Casper, Wyo., wasn’t really a hometown hero, but the Great Falls fans in the summer of 1985 treated him that way. Because Devereaux was a superstar. The former Arizona State outfielder batted .356 with 17 doubles, 10 triples, 4 homers, 40 stolen bases and 67 RBIs in 70 games for the 1985 Great Falls club. Devereaux went on to collect 949 hits, including 170 doubles, 33 triples and 105 homers, in a fine 12-year career in the big leagues.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Chris Carter (15 homers for 2006 Great Falls White Sox); CJ Retherford (30 doubles, 13 homers for 2007 Great Falls White Sox); Mike Aldrete (.417 average for 1983 Great Falls Giants); Rob Deer (32 extra-basehits 1979 Great Falls Giants; 230 homers in big leagues); James Loney (.317 average for 2002 Great Falls Dodgers; 1,425 hits in big leagues); Jamie McAndrew (11-0, 1.65 ERA for 1989 Great Falls Dodgers); Jorge Piedra (.383 average for 1998 Great Falls Dodgers); Joe Tinker (MLB Hall of Fame shortstop with 1,690 hits; played for 1900 Great Falls Indians, but no stats available); Joe McGinnity (MLB Hall of Fame with 246-142 pitching record; at age 46, pitched for 1917 Great Falls Electrics).

MOSCOW TOPOGRAPHY

Moscow Rings Map

Moscow has developed in circles around the original historical center. Today, Muscovites divide their city into four road rings. The first one, Bulvarnoye Koltso (Boulevard Ring), contains the very center of the city, the Kremlin, as well as the Red Square and some other tourist attractions. The second ring road draws a circle with a diameter of around five kilometers around the Kremlin and covers what is considered the city center. The area is referred to as  Sadovoye koltso , the Garden Ring. The Third Transport Ring ( TTK ) is a high-speed freeway. The fourth ring is enclosed by the Moscow Automobile Ring Road ( MKAD ). The MKAD is the official city boundary, although there are huge areas outside the ring that are also officially part of the city area.
