The Ultimate Guide to Hamilton Island

  • Getting There
  • When to Visit

Mention the Whitsundays and Hamilton Island is the first place that comes to mind – and rightly so. It’s the most recognisable and accessible island in the archipelago of 74 sand and coral cays that scream “Queensland” and “Australia” to travellers the world over.

Hamilton is one of four resort islands in the Whitsundays section of the Great Barrier Reef, and everyone, from Australia’s favourite celebrities to sun-loving families and loved-up couples, holiday here. Some go for the fairy-floss sunsets over the Coral Sea, others for the aquamarine water promising fantastic underwater adventures, and more still for the resort culture and day-spa pampering.

Picture a verdant green island with white beaches, hidden coves, a harbour speckled with the white yachts of the uber-rich, and, of course, plenty of towering palms. Add restaurants, pools, a quaint chapel, surrounding reef and an Aussie icon – the sulphur-crested cockatoo – and Hamilton is what island dreams are made of. So, what are you waiting for?

How to get to Hamilton Island

It’s easy and affordable to get to the island, with travellers able to fly direct to Hamilton Island Airport or to Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine Airport) on the mainland. If you opt for the latter, you can then sail or take a ferry to the island from Airlie Beach, the main town in the Whitsundays. Alternatively, you can drive to Airlie or hop aboard one of numerous coach services that ply Australia’s East Coast, or even take a chopper to make an extra special entrance (brides, take note). Once on Hamilton Island, you’ll want to hire a golf buggy for when you’re too chilled out to walk.

Hamilton Island Accommodation

A magnet for the rich and famous, Hamilton Island is renowned for its luxury accommodation. The jewel in the island’s crown is qualia , which has won multiple awards for its sophisticated style and exquisite dining venues, while the adults-only Beach Club also has a strong following. Despite the island’s celebrity appeal, it’s very much a family-friendly destination, and there are a handful of other properties that cater to the youngest of guests.

Hotels and resorts

But let’s talk luxury first. There’s no doubt qualia steals the limelight when it comes to Hamilton Island accommodation , and with its beautiful pavilions and private pools, it’s easy to see why. If you’re after the ultimate Whitsundays escape – perhaps a honeymoon – you’ll want to bed down here.

High up on the northern tip of the island, you’re away from the marina and beach hubbub, with the 60 pavilions privy to views of the turquoise sea or verdant bushland. There are two restaurants to dine in, Pebble Beach and the Long Pavilion, the latter of which has a communal pool and is an inviting place to while away an afternoon reading a book.

If you’re craving a holiday without the rug rats, or you don’t want to be surrounded by everyone else’s, Beach Club Hamilton Island is a great option. This adults-only oasis is smack-bang on Catseye Beach and is perfect for romantic escapes, with a private restaurant and lounge.

A mid-range option is Reef View Hotel , which has long been a favourite of families, largely due to its affordability, views, pool and relaxed restaurant.

If you want to feel like you live on the island then the best place to stay is in one of the numerous rental apartments. Hamilton Island Yacht Club Villas are modern, multi-tiered holiday homes on the hillside above the marina. The villas are self-contained and have four bedrooms, four bathrooms and access to a pool complex. There are several other apartments available for hire across the island, and they range in size, sleeping anywhere from four to 14 people.

Nestled within tropical gardens, away from the hubbub of the marina, are Palm Bungalows . A short walk from Catseye Beach, the bungalows are for holidaymakers who enjoy a mix of dining out and self-catering. Each bungalow has recently undergone a facelift and is modern, private and quiet.

Best Things to do on Hamilton Island

On the water sailing, snorkeling, fishing and kayaking.

The Whitsundays are a sailor’s playground, with expert yachtsmen mixing with holiday novices on the water. One of the major ports of call on itineraries is Hamilton Island, with its top-notch marina and prestigious sailing club. Visit Hamilton while chartering a sailing boat or catamaran from Airlie Beach or enjoy a responsibility-free day cruise from the island itself.

If you like to mingle with the ‘it’ crowd, time your visit with Hamilton Island Race Week, a celebrity-infused seven days of on- and off-shore events every August. Island guests can also hire mini catamarans or join a group or private lesson from Catseye Beach.

If you’re into fishing, there are a handful of ways to scratch your angling itch. You can go it alone by hiring a dinghy from Hamilton Island Tour Desk, and you can grab bait and tackle from the marina. Alternatively, you can join a half- or full-day tour with a company such as Renegade Fishing Charters. The professional guides will take you to the Whitsundays’ best reefs and waterways, and give you plenty of tips to improve your fishing game.

One of Australia’s most scenic golf courses is a short hop across the water on Dent Island. Whether you’re an experienced golfer or simply enjoy a swing on holiday, you’re bound to be impressed by this par 71, 18-hole championship course. If you’re not, well the views will win you over anyway.

After a game, drop into Hamilton Island Golf Club for a long lunch. Hamilton Island also caters for golfers with a family-friendly driving range where you’re encouraged to hit balls into a lake, and there’s a pitch and putt course too. To get the kids interested in the sport, head along to the mini golf course, which glows in the dark every night.

Spa and Relax

One of Hamilton’s biggest drawcards is its idyllic lifestyle, yet this Whitsundays gem promises a relaxing holiday that goes beyond beach cabanas and poolside cocktails. The island’s day spas have serious credentials and you’ll want to book at least one treatment during your stay.

Spa qualia is a tropical sanctuary you’ll find hard to leave, especially after indulging in one of the signature experiences (think mud wraps and mineral facials) or well-being therapies.

For non-qualia guests, there is Spa wumurdaylin, where you can enjoy body scrubs, massages and the like.

If you’re visiting for a wedding or want to get dolled up for a romantic night out, there is also Island Hair and Beauty for all your pampering needs.

No trip to Hamilton Island is complete without dipping your head below the water’s surface to discover myriad reef fish and coral. You don’t need to pack your snorkel, mask or flippers, either. Join a snorkelling tour to Hamilton’s neighbouring islands and beaches, including famous Whitehaven Beach, a seven-kilometre stretch of white silica on Whitsunday Island. This slice of paradise is the quintessential Aussie destination that wows everyone who visits, and you can get there aboard half- or full-day charters, or via yacht or seaplane. Hamilton Island is also the perfect launching point for scuba diving tours, sunset cruises, fishing charters, and scenic flights over the reef. Best time to visit Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island weather is idyllic most of the year, however winter (June-August) is an especially great time to visit as you won’t need to worry about doonas and woollen socks. Daytime temperatures average 24 degrees Celsius, while at night you won’t need much more than a cardigan. If you love sailing, you’ll want to arrive around August, when skies are clear and there’s a decent breeze.

For those seeking peace and quiet, consider visiting during the off-season, from January to March, although pack an umbrella in preparation for tropical showers.

Hamilton Island Tours and Packages

If you want to leave planning your Hamilton Island getaway in the hands of experts, there are several packages to choose from. Walking trails are traversed at the walker's own risk. Please consider weather conditions, your physical fitness and your state of health. Hamilton Island accepts no liability for any injuries sustained.

Hike overview

Escape Beach can be accessed directly from Saddle Junction, the trail takes you through the bushland of Hamilton Island, where you can sometimes see wallabies and other wildlife in their native island home.

About the region

Hamilton Island is one of the few Whitsunday Islands that isn't part of the National Park, but it's every bit as beautiful. You can forget that you are on a populated resort island so easily on one of the many walks, and the views are to die for!

Though it's been inhabited for close to 8,000 years, Hamilton Island remains very much a pristine, natural environment. From its original settlement by the Ngaro people, to its visit by Captain Cook in 1770, and evolution as a tourist destination in the 1970s and 1980s, Hamilton Island has had a long and interesting history. The island was purchased by renowned Australian winemaker, Bob Oatley, in 2003, and since, has become one of the world's leading holiday destinations.

While there is an abundance of restaurants, bars and resorts on Hamilton Island, only a third of the island is developed - meaning the rest remains in its pristine, natural state. There are more than a dozen walking trails through which guests can explore the island.

Gympie-Gympie Stinging Tree

Gympie-Gympie has broad oval or heart-shaped leaves with saw-tooth edges and white or purple-red fruit. They are covered in stinging hairs which appear furry. Brushing against the tree will cause the hairs to embed into the skin and cause an extremely painful stinging sensation. If stung, do not rub the area, and seek urgent medical attention. Please stay on marked trails to avoid contact with the plant.

Irukandji Jellyfish

Irukandji – a small and transparent jellyfish - can be present in the waters of the Whitsunday Islands, predominantly during the summer months. They are more commonly found in deep water, however there have been an increased number of occurrences in shallow waters recently. Symptoms of an Irukandji sting include severe pain, muscle constriction and breathing difficulties which require immediate medical attention. For this reason, we recommend that you avoid swimming in secluded beaches. If you choose to swim in the ocean – instead of one of the many pools – we recommend you wear a stinger suit and swim in the presence of others so assistance can be given if needed. We would strongly advise that small children and guests who are pregnant, have a heart or pre-existing medical condition, only swim in our pools.

Hamilton Island is part of the Whitsundays marine ecology and sharks frequent the waters in the region. Whilst the risk of attack is very low, it does exist. We recommend that you don’t swim at dawn, dusk or at night or in unclear water. Always swim with others. Leave the water quickly and calmly if you see a shark or if fish begin to gather in large schools, jump out of the water or behave erratically.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT HAMILTON ISLAND?

Hamilton Island sees glorious sunshine almost all year round.

If you want the best of the best conditions weatherwise, I recommend visiting between May and October (Autumn, Winter, and Spring) which is less busy and ideal for beach bumming, bush walks, and water sports.

Summer in Hamilton Island is between December and February which sees hotter temperatures, some rainfall, and more tourists.

All that aside, it’s still a great time to visit Hamilton Island during this time.

15 BEST THINGS TO DO ON HAMILTON ISLAND

Now that you’ve got some useful info and the logistics of how to get to Hamilton Island, let’s get to the fun stuff!

So, without further ado, here is your complete guide to 15 AWESOME Things To Do In Hamilton Island .

KAYAK, SUP, & SAIL AT CATSEYE BEACH

To kick off your adventures on Hamilton Island, I highly recommend jumping into some water sports activities at Catseye Beach.

Located in front of the Main Pool at Hamilton Island Resort, and open to the public, this is where you can find the Beach Sports Hut to organize your activities.

You can hire snorkeling gear, kayaks, SUPs, and small sailing boats from the Beach Sports Hut, and if you happen to be staying in one of the Hamilton Island Resorts, all the equipment is included free of charge with your stay.

Make sure to plan your visit to Catseye Beach for about 3 hours on either side of high tide as this is when you’ll be able to book your water sports activities.

You could easily spend an entire day exploring the waters of Catseye Beach and you’ll be fascinated by the marine life that you’ll encounter including colorful corals, fishes, and sea turtles!

Alternatively, you can just stay here and work on your tan, one of the best free things to do on Hamilton Island!

HAMILTON ISLAND SUNSET CRUISE

Next on this list of awesome things to do on Hamilton Island is a Sunset Cruise which is rated as one of the top Hamilton Island attractions by visitors!

The best sunset sailing cruise on Hamilton Island is by far with Ricochet Yachting, departing from Hamilton Island Yacht Club.

Upon arrival on the Ricochet Yacht, you’ll receive a glass of champagne and once the catamaran sets sail, the crew offers free-flow beer, wine, and nibbles for all guests.

The view of Hamilton Island and the surrounding islands while on the water at sunset is simply stunning!

This 1.5-hour sunset sail is a must on your list of what to do in Hamilton Island and is definitely worth the experience!

HIKE TO PASSAGE PEAK

Passage Peak is one of my favorite hikes on the island, and easily an excellent answer to what to do on Hamilton Island.

The trail starts at the Resort Trail Entrance or Hideaway Bay Entrance close to the Reef View Hotel.

The hike takes approximately 2 hours return which includes stopping to take pictures along the trail. Be sure to wear a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Whitsundays from the highest point on Hamilton Island.

You can also spot Hill Inlet and a snippet of the world-famous Whitehaven Beach from the summit of Passage Peak.

Be sure to include Passage Peak on your list of what to do in Hamilton Island.

VISIT WHITEHAVEN BEACH ON A FULL-DAY TRIP

Whitehaven Beach is just a thirty-minute trip by speed boat, and Hamilton Island offers several Whitehaven Beach day trips and Whitehaven Beach tours.

You can also explore the beach in a helicopter or seaplane, or better yet, sail to Whitehaven Beach on one of the island’s yachts.

Whitehaven Beach is in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and has been voted the world’s top eco-friendly beach.

Whitsunday Island’s famous beach stretches for seven kilometers and is washed by swirls of turquoise, blue, and green water.

The sand is 98% pure white silica, which gives it a brilliant, near-luminescent color.

A trip to Whitehaven Beach is not to be missed on your list of things to do in the Whitsundays!

TAKE A 2-DAY GREAT BARRIER REEF CRUISE

Want to sleep under the stars and be surrounded by the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef? Then read on, this is one of the best things to do in Hamilton Island.

Board a high-speed catamaran and transfer to an innovative pontoon with interactive underwater viewing chambers, semi-submersibles, and spacious sun decks.

For 2 days, you’ll get to relax on the boat, purchase drinks, take endless, stunning photos, spend some time on Hardy Reef, and make epic memories!

Also, the guide will provide you with equipment and instruction for a day of snorkeling and semi-submersible tours with informative commentary on the underwater world.

But the exploration doesn’t end there!

Once the day ends, you’ll get to spend the night on the bed equipped with a mattress, bedding, and a one-of-a-kind view of the stars above and the reef.

Wake up to breakfast and slowly come back to Hamilton Island to explore the other activities. That being said, this is one of the best experiences you can book, and I recommend booking early!

I can’t think of more unique Hamilton Island things to do!

STAY AT REEF VIEW HOTEL

I personally stayed at the Reef View Hotel and can’t recommend this place enough!

Every room at Reef View Hotel offers a stunning view either over the sparkling Coral Sea, or the island’s lush tropical gardens.

The Reef View Hotel is located directly opposite Catseye Beach and the Main Pool. It’s also close to many of the island’s restaurants, activities, and entertainment.

The highlight of the rooms is definitely the private balconies. You’ll certainly be greeted by cockatoos sitting on your balcony railing and if you decide to feed them, be prepared to have dozens of them hanging around all day.

Another stunning feature of the Reef View Hotel is the top-to-bottom glass elevator that offers a spectacular view over Catseye Beach each time you take a ride.

A buffet breakfast is also served each morning by the Reef View Hotel pool from 7 am – 10 am.

SWIM AT THE RESORT POOL

There are three main swimming pools along Catseye Beach, which any guest on the island can enjoy.

The three pools are called Dolphin Pool, Main Pool, and Bougainvillea Pool.

The Main Pool is the largest pool and it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.

There’s a bar in the middle of the swimming pool where you can order your favorite drink without ever having to leave the cool waters.

The Bougainvillea Pool is best suited for families traveling with young kids as it has a shallow section and offers a lot of shady spots beneath the palm trees.

MUST READ: BEST TRAVEL ACCESSORIES FOR ANY TRIP

The Dolphin Pool is located close to Sails Restaurant and offers the best views overlooking one of the beautiful beaches around – Catseye Beach.

The pools are open from sunrise to sunset with toilets, showers, and change room facilities available.

Please note that the pools are not supervised by lifeguards so be sure to keep a close eye on your kids and belongings.

GO JET-SKIING AROUND HAMILTON ISLAND

I personally did a jet ski tour with Hamilton Island’s Jet Ski Tours and it was the highlight of my stay – so much fun!

You’ll have the opportunity to ride your own jet ski but you’ll be accompanied by an experienced instructor who will lead the way through the Whitsunday waterways.

When going on a Hamilton Island Jet Skiing Tour, you’ll be able to explore some of the secret locations around the island as the jet skiing guide knows the best spots.

If you’re lucky enough, you might even spot some turtles and whales on the tour.

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that’s looking for an adrenaline-fuelled activity and doesn’t just want to lay by the pool all day long.

It’s a different and unique way to explore and is rated as one of the top things to do in Hamilton Island.

Prices start at $245 and an additional $40 for a passenger.

Get ready to fly high with the best tour in Hamilton Island! This exciting adventure takes you on a 60-minute scenic flight above the stunning Whitsunday Islands.

Starting from Airlie Beach, you’ll be aboard a modern aircraft and enjoy breathtaking views all along.

Apart from stunning photos, the pilot will provide in-flight commentary, highlighting all 74 picturesque islands off the North Coast of Queensland.

But that’s not all! You’ll also see the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, from a unique and exhilarating perspective.

This tour is the best way to see the stunning beauty of Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays!

CRUISE AROUND THE ISLAND IN A BUGGY

Hamilton Island’s iconic electric golf buggies offer a fun way to get around and explore the island.

The buggies are easy to drive and no training is required, although you will have to provide a valid driver’s license for the reservation.

You can reserve your buggy prior to arriving on Hamilton Island or you can book a buggy once you get here.

The pricing starts at around $119 per 24 hours and the buggy seats up to 4 people.

You’ll be able to cruise around the whole island a lot quicker than if you were to explore on foot or have to wait for the bus, plus it’s a must-do experience on Hamilton Island.

VISIT THE HAMILTON ISLAND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Still thinking of the Hamilton Island what to do activities for your trip?!

Visiting Hamilton Island Wildlife Sanctuary gives you the opportunity to get up close and personal with some iconic Australian wildlife.

Located near Catseye Beach, the park is home to all kinds of Australian animals such as snakes, lizards, koalas, cassowaries, dingoes, kangaroos, and crocodiles.

There are guided tours available with the park keepers who will let you touch, feed, and talk to some of the animals, and you’ll even get the chance to take a keepsake photo.

If you don’t opt for the guided tour, you can simply enjoy the park at your own pace.

Hamilton Island Wildlife Sanctuary is open daily from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.

  • Child – $22.00

TAKE A HELICOPTER FLIGHT OVER THE WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS

Another of the best things to do in Hamilton Island is to take a helicopter ride over the Whitsunday Islands.

While I previously suggested a scenic flight, a helicopter ride is slightly different, and is a great alternative is the other flight isn’t available!

Get high in the sky on an unforgettable 30-minute scenic flight from Airlie Beach. Kick-start your adventure with an in-flight commentary from your pilot as you gaze over Hill Inlet, Shute Harbour, Molle Islands, Long Island, Dent Island, Hamilton Island, and Daydream Island.

As if that’s not enough to satisfy your wanderlust, top this with a 1.5-hour tour of the crystal-clear waters of the Coral Sea, lazing on the snow-white sands of Whitehaven Beach.

This tour is perfect for those who want to experience the Whitsunday Islands in style, filled with adventure, and unbeatable scenery!

TAKE A HELICOPTER FLIGHT OVER THE WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS

ENJOY A SUNSET COCKTAIL AT ONE TREE HILL

You can’t leave Hammo without having witnessed a sunset from One Tree Hill sunset bar, boasting some of Hamilton Island’s best views.

One Tree Hill is open from lunchtime onwards and offers great cocktails and nibbles.

You don’t have to be seated at the bar for sunset, you can also stroll down to the hill in front of the bar and chose a spot on the grass beneath the swaying coconut palms to enjoy the view.

Once you’re done with your cocktail, the waiters will come and collect your empty glass even when you’re chilling on the hill.

It’s also possible to bring your own wine bottle and nibbles if you prefer not to purchase anything from the bar.

Make your way to One Tree Hill on foot, by buggy, or onboard the Green Bus, and I recommend coming early to make the most of your time at this Hamilton Island must do.

hamilton island, things to do in hamilton island, hamilton island things to do, hamilton island activities, what to do on hamilton island

GO GOLFING AT HAMILTON ISLAND GOLF CLUB

One of the must-do activities when visiting Hamilton Island is to take a swing at the Hamilton Island Golf Club .

Perfectly situated at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, this golf club is home not just a challenging 18-hole course, but also some of the most breathtaking views in Australia.

But it’s not just the golf that makes this place special. The Hamilton Island Golf Club is the only Australian 18-hole golf course on its very own island, Dent Island.

While playing, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the Whitsunday Islands and the Coral Sea, making your golfing experience one for the books.

After a day on the green, make sure to visit the Clubhouse. Here, you can relax and enjoy a meal or drink while soaking up the stunning 360-degree views.

Can you think of better best things to do Hamilton Island for a day out as a golf lover?

CHECK OUT HAMILTON ISLAND ART GALLERY

Another of the unmissable Hamilton Island activities is a visit to the Hamilton Island Art Gallery.

Nestled near the Marina, this gallery presents a fantastic variety of artwork from recognised Australian painters, showcasing a wide range of styles.

The gallery itself may be small, but it’s bursting with creativity and inspiration. It features beautiful paintings inspired by the sea, sailing, and other elements of island life, as well as unique handiworks crafted from shells.

How hard do you rate the hike to passage peak. Would an older person be able to walk it.

Hi Heather, I would rate it easy to moderate. I recommend early morning or late afternoon as it won’t be as hot. Hope this helps and enjoy the view from Passage Peak!

City of Hamilton Walking Tour

As Bermuda's capital, the City of Hamilton is a walkable, lively centre of commerce and culture that entices with its colourful, welcoming character.

  • Beyond the Beach,
  • People & Culture

As you walk, take in the history, harbour views, pastel-coloured architecture, inviting green spaces and, of course, local people going about their business (perhaps in their iconic Bermuda shorts).

One way to gain an appreciation of the local flavour is to fall in step with Hamilton's Town Crier, Ed Christopher. Dressed in traditional garb, he leads daily city walking tours beginning at 10:30 am, Monday through Friday from April to October. The tours begin on the steps of City Hall on Church Street. Listen for the Town Crier's ringing bell and shouted welcome as he draws a crowd.

Self-Guided Cultural Walking Tour

If you prefer to chart your own course, grab a city map and discover the heart of Hamilton on your own. In a couple of hours, you can see many of Hamilton's notable cultural attractions. Here is one of many walking routes to try:

ART, HISTORY & GARDENS

Start by visiting the City Hall & Arts Centre on Church Street. This bright white building is home to the  Bermuda National Gallery , which features both local and international art, including 17th and 18th century European paintings by artists such as Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Upstairs is the  Bermuda Society of Arts  gallery, with rotating exhibits of work by local visual artists.

Back outside on Church Street, make your way down Queen Street heading south toward the harbour. On your right, check out the Historical Society Museum and National Library. History buffs will enjoy the extensive collection of documents and rare island artifacts. The building is set within Par-La-Ville Gardens, designed by Bermuda's first Postmaster General, William Bennett Perot. Nearby you'll find Perot's original post office. Still active, it looks much as it did when he was appointed in 1821.

Three women shopping in Bermuda

FRONT STREET

When you reach the bottom of Queen Street, turn left and join the lively throngs on  Front Street , with its pastel, Colonial-style buildings, restaurants, shops and galleries. Be sure to explore the lanes and alleyways off Front Street for more local flavour. On Wednesday evenings in the summer, the street is alive with the irresistible rhythms of Bermuda's beloved Gombey dancers during Harbour Nights.

On the corner of Front Street & Parliament Street, you will find the Cabinet Building, with its distinctive Cenotaph war monument out front. One block north of Cabinet House is the Sessions House, dating from 1819. Bermuda's parliament is the oldest in the British Commonwealth; when in session, there is a public gallery.

Buildings on Front Street in Bermuda

HISTORIC CHURCHES & TEA TIME

Turn left at the intersection of Parliament and Church Streets and walk by some of Bermuda's oldest historic churches, including the  Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity . This magnificent Anglican cathedral was built of native stone and imported Caen stone, and was designed by William Hay of Edinburgh in Restoration-Gothic style. On weekdays, you can climb the 143-foot tower for a stunning view of the city.

As you head back toward City Hall, consider a relaxing stroll through the shady paths of Victoria Park. Or, head straight to the Washington Mall for tea, pastry and shopping.
