Getting To Know Hellesylt – Cruise Port Guide

Port snapshot.

Hellesylt is often overshadowed by its popular neighbour Geiranger with both located in the Geirangerfjord, albeit at the end of different branches of the fjord. It is though becoming increasingly popular with cruise ships to allow guests to explore the dramatic scenery that surrounds this small village and to overnight before reaching Geiranger the following day. Hellesylt may be small in size, but it has huge touristic appeal, so if the opportunity is afforded to you though, take some time to venture out of Hellesylt to experience the jaw dropping landscape. Welcome to our Hellesylt cruise port guide.

Port Location and Facilities

The cruise pier of Hellesylt is at the heart of the village, only 200m from the centre, providing immediate access for tourists from cruise ships. Whilst there are no facilities at the pier itself, Hellesylt has a few conveniences such as two supermarkets, a large souvenir shop, a takeaway restaurant, a café and bar and a petrol station.

What not to miss

  • Hellesyltfossen

This roaring cascade is formed by the River Dalaelva which cuts the village in two. It drops over 20 metres down a rocky escarpment and has two bridges that cross it allowing different vantage points for stunning photographs of the waterfall, and from the High Bridge a great view of the village and the port.

The Peer Gynt Gallery

This exhibition space displays 11 wooden reliefs depicting the drama Peer Gynt by Norway’s most famous play write, Henrik Ibsen. Recent years have seen exhibitions focusing on World Heritage and how the UNESCO status afforded to the Geirangerfjord has influenced the development of tourism in the region, showcasing its natural wonder.

  • Sunnylven Church

The current church is from 1859 but it is located where a church has stood dating back to the 12th Century.

  • Norang Valley (Norangsdalen)

This valley is one of the narrowest in Norway and the mountains either side of you tower up so high it’s as if they envelope you and block out the sky. Within the valley are the lakes Jelskred and Lygnstøylvatnet, the latter which was formed by a rockslide in 1908 and below the surface you can still see the remains of farmhouses and the old road through the valley that were destroyed. The Norang Valley is also famous for bearing the moniker, The Queen’s Route, after the King and Queen of Norway passed through the area on their Silver Jublie cruise in 1993.

Travel Tips

Tourist information.

NoFlyCruises recommends https://visitstranda.com/en the tourism website for the Stranda municipality.

The currency in Norway is the Norwegian Krone. Norway has a reputation as one of the most expensive countries in Europe and the average price of a standard cup of coffee is around £3/$4. Budget accordingly if you plan to dine out each day, as meals are roughly around 110kr per person (£11/$13 per person).

Hellesylt has a cold and temperate climate, with the average high in July of only 11 degrees Celsius.

Getting Around

It is easy to navigate your way around the village on foot, just be aware that to reach the High Bridge over the waterfall you will either have to navigate the inclines of the roads and paths, or if you are able to take the steps that lead up alongside the waterfall. Be careful as they can become slippery when wet.

Safety Whilst Ashore

Hellesylt is a very quiet and friendly village with no issues surrounding safety whilst visiting.

Where to Eat

NoFlyCruises recommends the following eateries:

Øcal Restaurant , Fv60 1150, 6218 Hellesylt, Norway

Being such a small town, you don’t really have much choice in where to eat, however if you’re after a huge pizza and a view of the stunning waterfall, then this is the place to go.

A brand new cruise pier has been built, allowing for easy access into Hellesylt. The largest of cruise ships are able to dock now.

When more than one cruise ship is in port, you might be tendered in.

Hellesylt is not a large village, but it is a starting point for overland tours. In most cases, you don’t take the tender into this port unless you have a tour departing from this point. When you are docked you will be allowed to disembark.

Geiranger and Hellesylt are tandem ports: At either one of the ports you will stop only for a few hours to tender passengers who book the overland tour to the other port, where your ship will stay longer. More often you will be able to disembark for a few hours at both ports.

Sightseeing:

Hellesylt is a small village in the municipality of Stranda in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The village lies at the head of the Sunnylvsfjord, which is a branch of the Storfjord, and which the more famous Geirangerfjord in turn branches off nearby. The village has a population of around 260. In the summertime, thousands of tourists travel through or stay in Hellesylt each day.

The focal point of the town is the large water fall in the center.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Everyone who has done a cruise organized overland tour to Geiranger seems to love it - but agrees it's exhausting. The time in port is not extensive (about 2 hours) and it's a tendering port so it takes a bit longer.

You also can get off the ship by yourself and take the local ferry that goes up the fjord to Geiranger. There is Norwegian music playing and offers yummy baked goods and coffee from the little snack bar on board.

The cruise line might tell you that the tenders will be only for cruise organized excursions but that's not really true.

Of course the cruise liner itself will also sail to Geiranger, so the above ferry is only of interest if you want to be among the locals and feel the typical Norwegian atmosphere.

As the weather in Norway can be very unpredictable, make sure to check the cancellation policies in case of inclement weather. It is no fun driving around in the clouds.

At the tourist office located at the Peer Gynt cafe, located next to the Coop supermarket, which is easily visible from every where, fast WiFi is available when ordering a drink. Ask for the log-in key at the counter. As you are there you might as well visit the Oddvin Parr woodcarving exhibit, depicting the Peer Gynt story in floor to ceiling wood carvings.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Most stores are open when a cruise ship is in town.

Port Hellesylt cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Hellesylt, Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Hellesylt is a port town in More og Romsdal, Norway. The town is located at the head of Sunnylvsfjorden (a branch of Storfjorden). The more popular Geirangerfjorden branches off near by. The small village has population under 500. The distance between Hellesylt and the other tender port Geiranger (Geirangerfjord) is approx 22 km (14 mi).

In the summer, thousands of tourists stay in or travel through Hellesylt each day. Most of them take the ferry to nearby Geiranger. During high season, the ferry runs every 1, 5 hours. The village is surrounded by valleys and mountains.

Hellesylt is under constant threat from the Akerneset mountain, which is about to erode into Sunnylvsfjord. A collapse could cause a tsunami destroying the town.

Hellesylt cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Hellesylt dock at the port's new cruise pier (1 berth capacity). Here can be berthed even the world's largest vessels. In rare cases, when the port is visited by more ships at a time, the other vessels are anchored and their passengers are transported via the ship's tender boats.

Often, both Norwegian cruise ports Hellesylt and Geiranger are itinerary-connected. The ship stops for a few hours at one of them to offload (tender) cruise passengers with booked tours there. At the other port, the ship docks to stay longer. Usually, passenger disembarkation is allowed at both ports.
