Most people have had blood drawn at some point in their lives. Healthcare providers order blood work for all kinds of reasons, from routine checks to specific tests to screen or diagnose a condition. Getting blood drawn is a regular part of care for people with chronic health issues that require ongoing monitoring, such as diabetes.

Traditionally, most blood work is completed at a lab or doctor’s office through a venous blood draw — in other words, through a vein. A nurse or phlebotomist inserts a needle into a vein to extract the number of vials of blood required for the requested tests. It’s an old process, and it works — but it takes time, and it can be uncomfortable or even painful.

But there is an easier, more efficient way. At-home blood testing — similar to the daily fingerprick blood testing people with diabetes do to measure their blood sugar — involves a small blood draw from your fingertip or heel. 

It’s done with a small, handheld lancet and is inexpensive, fast, and as accurate as traditional lab testing. Instead of being at the mercy of appointment times and waiting rooms, you're on your schedule.

How does at home blood testing work?

At-home blood testing is simple. The tiny capillaries — branches of blood vessels — in extremities like your fingertips and heels deliver vital nutrients and oxygen throughout your body, making them perfect for taking samples.

Here’s how the at-home blood testing process typically works at imaware:

1. Order, receive and activate your at-home blood test kit.

Once you've ordered your imaware kit online , it will be delivered in five to seven business days. 

Once you receive your kit, you need to activate it by creating an imaware account; later, you’ll use this account to view your test progress and access your results in our secure patient portal.

2. Prepare for your test.

Each at-home blood test kit works differently, and each sample collection may require different steps. It’s essential to read the instructions, so you’re prepared for your at-home blood test. 

Some tests require fasting, some require taking a sample in the morning, and some need to be sent back on the same day. Get to know the requirements, so you’re ready. 

3. Collect your blood sample.

To collect your sample, you’ll prick your finger with a lancet. It's almost painless, and you'll only need a few drops of blood to get accurate lab test results from home. Scared of needles? The good news is that our lancet stays hidden until after its work is done.

Here are some tips and tricks for collecting the best sample possible:

• Drink up: Make sure you're well hydrated before collecting your sample. Your blood is thinner when you're fully hydrated, so getting the drops of blood you need is easier. Increase your water intake the day before the test, and drink one or two glasses of water about an hour before you complete the test.
• Heat your hands: Warm your fingers by running your hands under warm water to encourage blood flow.
• Move your body: Vigorous movement in the five minutes before your test will also help, so get up and go for a power walk, do some jumping jacks or throw on your favorite YouTube dance video. 
• Put your ring finger on it: The finger next to your pinky is generally less calloused than the others, making it a good choice.
• Aim to the side of the middle: The side of your fingertip has fewer nerve endings than the exact middle, so it’s less painful, while the center of your finger will produce the most blood. So aim for somewhere around the center to the side for the best of both worlds.
• Be gentle: Avoid squeezing your finger to get a drop of blood, which can break the blood cells and compromise the sample. If you’re not generating enough blood, try massaging from the palm up to the first knuckle of the pricked finger.

4. Drop your sample off at the courier.

Our kits come with prepaid shipping and instructions for which courier company to use. Drop off your completed home test at the nearest location on the same day you take your test. You can track your sample’s progress by logging into our online portal.

5. Receive your doctor-reviewed results in our secure dashboard.

Around five to seven business days after you drop your sample at the courier’s, your physician-reviewed results will be ready to read on our online portal.

You’ll be notified when they’re ready, and your report will come in plain English — no medical jargon, we promise.

What can a home blood test tell you?

At-home blood testing can answer most of the questions that traditional lab tests can. 

With just a few drops of blood, at-home blood tests can check your:

Benefits of at-home lab testing

There are many benefits to testing at home instead of the lab, pharmacy or doctor’s office.

Capillary draws require less blood. Instead of taking a vial (or vials!), imaware kits only need three to five drops and are less likely to cause pain or bruising when compared with a venous draw.

Can’t stand the sight of needles? Ours is small, and it stays hidden in the lancet until after its work is done.

No need to find a lab, book an appointment, factor in travel time, contend with waiting rooms or even put on pants! 

We send your at-home blood testing kit direct to your home, and we make it easy to drop off your completed kit to our shipping partner (you’ll probably want to wear pants for that part).

When your doctor orders a test, you’re often stuck waiting for them to read the results before you can see them. But when you order from imaware, you can review your report within a week of sending back your test.

Our labs are certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). 

Drawbacks of at-home testing

At-home lab testing is fast, efficient, and inexpensive, but it has its downsides like anything else. 

If you’re dehydrated or have very calloused fingers, drawing your own sample may be more challenging than a venous blood draw. 

And because small-volume blood testing is still relatively new, there aren’t as many types of tests available right now (although the number is growing every day). 

Plus, imaware’s tests aren’t currently recommended for children.

What happens after your at-home test

Lab tests are essential to the diagnostic process, but they don’t generally diagnose conditions independently. For example, a positive celiac disease screening test needs to be followed by a gastroenterologist visit and biopsy to confirm the condition.

What to expect

After your purchase, you will receive an email and text message (message and data rates may apply) from Quest Mobile™ with your unique link to schedule your appointment. A Quest Mobile™ phlebotomist will arrive at your scheduled appointment time. The phlebotomist will carry an identification badge.

In-home sample collection takes between 10 and 20 minutes. Please have your valid photo identification ready.

Only single-use, sterile, disposable needles are used to collect the specimen and gloves are always worn. If you’re getting a few blood tests, more than one test tube might be attached to the needle before it’s withdrawn. If your test requires a urine sample, Quest Mobile™ will provide you materials to collect the sample during your appointment.

After your sample collection is complete, specimens are delivered directly to the nearest Quest Diagnostics location for processing.

Quest Mobile™ phlebotomists are aware of the tests performed, however, they are not qualified to discuss testing reasons nor do they get results.

If you take blood-thinning medication, be sure to tell your Quest Mobile™ phlebotomist.

After the collection

The Quest Mobile™ phlebotomist will deliver the sample directly to the closest Quest Diagnostics location for processing.

You will receive an email notification when your lab test results are ready.

Quest Mobile™'s phlebotomists undergo regular proficiency testing and follow rigorous safety protocols. Quest Mobile™ employees are up-to-date on their credentials and have passed a multi-step safety screening & background check. Quest Mobile™ phlebotomists have backgrounds such as RNs, LPNs, Medical Assistants, Medical Technicians and Lab Technicians.

Rescheduling

You may reschedule your sample collection up to 24 hours in advance of your scheduled appointment. Appointment changes made less than 24-hours of the scheduled in-home sample collection may result in cancellation, and you will be charged the full collection fee.

Cancellation

You may cancel your in-home sample collection up to 24 hours in advance of your scheduled appointment. There is a non-refundable cancellation fee of $10, which includes Quest Mobile™ administrative fees. In some states, applicable taxes are non-refundable as well.

Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance of your scheduled in-home sample collection appointment are non-refundable and you will be charged the full collection fee of $55.

If you do not complete your in-home sample collection within 60 days of your purchase, your purchase will expire and you will be charged the full collection fee of $55.

Awanui Labs provides a home visit specimen collection service where requested and authorised by the referrer for eligible patients.

Home visit guidelines

We are implementing a revised procedure for cases where patients are not available during their scheduled Home Visits. If a phlebotomist arrives at a patient’s residence and finds them absent, they will leave a calling card advising the patient to contact us to reschedule their visit.

When the patient reaches out to us, we will promptly rebook the Home Visit and remind them of the eligibility requirements. However, if the patient is unavailable for three consecutive visits, we will discontinue the Home Visit service. In such cases, the patient will be informed to contact their referrer and the following message will be sent to the practitioner:

“Your patient was not home for their scheduled Home Visit, so we were unable to complete this request.  Please arrange for a follow up consultation to determine if the requested tests are still required and to confirm the patient’s details, including their eligibility for Home Visits.”

What to expect

We are committed to improving the convenience of the diagnostic experience for our patients. Our mobile sample collections are designed to provide flexibility and comfort, and we want to make sure you have all the information to make your in-home visit as efficient and pleasant as possible.

What to expect during an in-home sample collection

Preparing yourself for a mobile sample collection, getting your results, providing feedback on your experience.

A mobile sample collection typically takes between 10 and 20 minutes.

Please have your photo identification and your insurance card ready. Providing your insurance information lets us bill your insurance company for your lab testing. Billing for lab testing is separate from the mobile sample collection fee required when scheduling your in-home appointment.

Your sample will be collected by a medically trained Quest Mobile professional. When collecting your sample, they will use only single-use, sterile, disposable needles and will always wear gloves. 

If you’re getting a few blood tests, they may attach more than 1 test tube to the needle before withdrawing it.   Back to top

Remember to fast, if required. Don't eat or drink anything but water for 9-12 hours before your appointment. It's okay to drink water and take your medications. If your test does not require you to fast, this means you are free to eat before your screening. Please contact your doctor to determine the requirements for your specific testing.

You should take any regularly scheduled medications as usual. If you take blood-thinning medication, be sure to tell your phlebotomist.

Your phlebotomist is focused on providing you with attentive, compassionate care and will strive to make sure you understand and are comfortable with each step in the process.

Most test results are available within 2-5 days of collection. Yet some complex testing may take 14 days or more. Quest sends completed test results directly to the ordering doctor for review. Results will also be available in your MyQuest account as tests are completed.

Quest Mobile professionals are aware of the tests performed; however, they are not qualified to discuss testing reasons nor do they get results.

You can access your lab results through MyQuest, Quest’s free and secure online health tool that delivers easy-to-understand lab results directly to you. If you don’t already have a MyQuest account, you can sign up now for free at  MyQuestResults.com

While MyQuest will guide you through your lab results, it’s important to discuss them with your doctor. Together, you can decide what’s best for your health.

Important billing information When scheduling a Quest Mobile™ appointment, you are scheduling a mobile sample collection with Quest Mobile for your convenience through a partner brand that does not participate with health insurance. Quest Mobile is a separate services division from Quest Diagnostics Incorporated. Patients are required to enter a credit card for the $55 in-home collection fee at the time of scheduling. Please note that in-home sample collection by Quest Mobile is not covered by health insurance and will not be submitted to your health plan. Quest Mobile does not participate with or bill Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial Insurance billing. While the in-home sample collection will not be billed to your health plan, the laboratory tests performed by Quest Diagnostics will be billed as a healthcare claim to your health plan under the terms of the existing contractual agreements and in accordance with the Quest Diagnostics usual procedures.

Employer Health and Wellness

To schedule an appointment for your employer health and wellness screening (biometric screening), we need to redirect you to the Health & Wellness website.

• Your doctor must have ordered your COVID-19 antibody testing or you must have purchased a test through QuestDirect. COVID-19 is highly contagious. If you are currently experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, you must first contact your doctor for next steps..
• We can only accept patients in our Patient Service Centers who have been confirmed to be COVID-19 symptoms-free for at least 10 days.

Schedule a Home Visit

Bio-Care offers healthcare providers several options when it comes to scheduling home visit laboratory services for their patients.

Standing orders can be placed for up to 6 months, or you may choose to send one-time orders on an as-needed basis.

Requests for labwork can be faxed and scheduled online until 4 pm the day before the home visit is required.  Bio-Care mobile phlebotomy  services are available Monday through Friday.

To avoid delays in scheduling home visits, please make sure all information is filled out including valid DX codes. 

What Patients Should Expect

Letting your patient know a blood test has been scheduled at home with Bio-Care is always a good idea to avoid any confusion.

Bio-Care phlebotomists will contact the patient the evening before the scheduled blood draw with an approximate time window of arrival.

It is always helpful to include as much contact information as possible when scheduling a home visit such as alternate contact and apartment numbers.

Fasting Bloodwork

Patients will be notified of any blood tests that have been ordered fasting.

Bio-Care will only instruct a patient to fast if it has been requested by the ordering physician.

All fasting patients will be scheduled before 10 am.

Arriving On Time

To keep our phlebotomists on time and ensure all specimens make it back to the lab in a timely manner, some visits may be rescheduled for the next business day if a patient is unavailable during the scheduled time window.
