Day 3, Wednesday: Lismore & Ring Music Session

Leave your hotel and travel the short distance to the heritage town of Lismore . In a Gaeltacht the spoken language is Irish and the Gaeltacht is also a great place to discover real traditional Irish Music. Visit Mooney’s Pub for a Traditional Music Session. Leave Inchigeelagh and head to Gougane Barra an area of outstanding natural beauty; here you will spend time with another local guide. Gougane Barra has been the subject of many songs and stories a local and well-known poet Máire Bhuí Uí Laoghaire for example immortalised the area in verse through her poem ‘Cath Céim an Fhia (The Battle of Keimaneigh)’. According to local lore, if you can successfully climb through the window at the back of the building your soul will then be cleansed, however as you will discover, this is a little hard to do! Then to the west of the town the scenery is particularly rugged with views out to the formerly inhabited Blasket Islands. Irish Music Tours: Meet Sean Kearns and Bronagh Given

When was the tour company established and how did the idea of creating an Irish music tour company come about?

irelandonabudget.com

The business came about literally by accident. Over the summer months, we used to play sessions each night and we noticed a lot of travelers wanted to find good music but it wasn’t part of their itinerary.

They were left to find it for themselves and sometimes they went days before they found a good session. We then decided to run a tour guided by musicians so that music was readily available each day. Since then, it has grown from strength to strength.

Where are you based?

We’re based in the village of Ardara, County Donegal in the northwest of Ireland. It’s a little heritage village on the Atlantic coast famous for its handwoven tweed and of course, traditional Irish music.

Bringing traditional Irish music and culture together is a great combination for a tour. Tell me how it all comes together.

All of our tours have music and culture at their core. So when we are designing an itinerary, we use our knowledge and contacts within the music scene to plan our route.

people playing Irish music Irish Music Tours

It helps when your guide is a musician too. We can then plot a route to take in the beautiful scenery and historical landmarks by day in the knowledge that we will have top-class music at night.

How many musicians and tour guides are typically on your tours?

This depends on the size of the group.

irelandonabudget.com

With a small group, there will only be one guide (who is also a musician) and we will go to the authentic Irish music sessions each night and the guide will join in. The larger the group, the more musicians travel on the tour.

We encourage musicians who book a tour with us to bring their instruments and, where possible, join in. A lot of people have benefited from free tuition from our guides while on our tours and now understand the music better and also the etiquette involved in the session scene.

Can local Irish musicians join the fun while you’re on tour and visiting the local pubs?

Absolutely. It works both ways because we know a lot of musicians throughout the country.  We can join in with them and they can join in with us. We have had some amazing nights where there have been more musicians than guests!

What is your most popular Irish music tour?

irelandonabudget.com

I think the Wild Atlantic Way tour has proven to be our most popular tour. It’s 10 nights beginning in Donegal and traveling down the west coast of Ireland before returning to Dublin. Along the way, we have some amazing surprises in store, fantastic music, and beautiful people.

What kinds of people typically book your tours and where do they come from?

Our guests cover the complete spectrum. Singles, couples, old, young, as well as musicians and non-musicians from the four corners of the globe.

We get great satisfaction seeing our guests form friendships with each other. We have a high number of returning guests, which is the ultimate form of avouchment.

What do people like most about your tours?

I think it’s the personal touch we provide. We begin each tour with a bunch of strangers and leave lifelong friends. Our Irish music family just keeps growing.

What makes your particular tour packages different from all the other package tours in Ireland?

We like to do things differently from normal tours. As well as visiting the popular tourist sites, we also visit instrument makers and see firsthand the processes involved.

irelandonabudget.com

Music is guaranteed each night and sometimes during the day if the opportunity arises. Our guests get to know the musicians personally. It’s like traveling on a band’s tour bus!

If someone was to ask you what county in Ireland is the best place to visit to get a feel for Irish traditional music, which would one you choose based on your experience traveling throughout Ireland?

I can’t choose one. It’s impossible. I’ll be biased and say Donegal but equally, Galway and Kerry are fantastic places for music. There is great music on the island of Ireland but you have to come with us to find it!

Are you planning to add different tours to your list of offerings in the future?

We’re currently working on a number of new tour options as we go forward. We learn new things on every tour and we use this to improve or add to the experience of the next tour.

The most exciting news is that we now offer tours that include both Ireland and Scotland , where the music is every bit as good as Ireland and the two styles are very similar. We still prefer Irish whiskey though!!

Where can people find more information on Irish Music Tours?

All information about all of our tours can be found on our website .

Tired of Shaving!

Among the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains is a beautiful region of river valleys, glacial lakes, and hills both rugged and rolling. It has been settled for its scenic wonder, its farmland, timber, and coal. The Irish people built canals, railroads, farms and towns here, and we live here still, playing our music and carrying on in general. I have fancifully named this countryside West o´Clare from the Irish county of origin, and from that I derive the name of my band as well.

12 Best Irish Bands Ever (2024 Edition)

If your in search of the best Irish bands, you’ll find plenty  that’ll make your ears happy below!

Now, a disclaimer – the subject of the top Irish bands stirs up some heated debate online (we got a nice bitta stick when we published our guide to the best Irish songs …).

And, to be fair, considering Ireland gave birth to everyone from U2 to the Cranberries, it’s understandable.

In this guide, you’ll find what  we  think are the best bands from Ireland, with a mix of rock, pop, traditional tunes and more!

Table of Contents

The best Irish bands of all time

great bands from Ireland

There have been many popular Irish bands over the years. Some, like U2, made it worldwide while other Irish rock bands never managed to make it past the UK.

Below, you’ll discover everyone from Snow Patrol and the Dubliners to some of the more modern Irish bands. Enjoy!

1. The Dubliners

The Dubliners

In our opinion, the Dubliners are one of the best Irish bands around. Founded in 1962 , The Dubliners were a successful Irish folk band for over 50 years, although there was a steady change in the line-up over the decades.

Original lead singers Luke Kelly and Ronnie Drew ensured the band became a big hit with people from Dublin and beyond.

They became one of the most popular Irish bands thanks to their catchy, traditional ballads and their powerful instrumentals .

They officially disbanded in 2012 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

However, some of the band are still on the road, now playing as “The Dublin Legends” . You’ll find  many  songs from the Dubliners in our guide to the best Irish drinking songs .

2. The Pogues

Fronted by Shane MacGowan, The Pogues took their name from the Irish phrase póg mo thóin, meaning “kiss my arse” .

One of the top Irish groups prominent in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, their apex was the classic recording of ‘Fairytale of New York’ .

Often featuring politically motivated lyrics , they played traditional Irish instruments with Shane MacGowan often seen on the banjo.

MacGowan left the Pogues in the early 90s due to problems with drink. They reformed and broke up many times over the years until one final reunion in 2001 .

U2 one of the most successful bands from Ireland

As one of the most famous Irish bands to ever form, U2 are synonymous with the expressive vocals of lead singer/guitarist Bono along with “The Edge” , Adam Clayton on bass guitar and Larry Mullen Jr. on drums.

The band formed while the musicians were still attending Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin.

Four years later they had a contract with Island Records and celebrated the first of 19 number one hits in the Irish charts with ‘War’ in 1983 .

Their lyrics often reflected the political and social conscience of the band. To-date, they’ve sold over 175 million albums , making them the most successful modern Irish bands.

4. The Chieftains

If you like the haunting sounds of Irish Uilleann Pipes (like bagpipes) The Chieftains instrumental music is sure to appeal.

The Chieftains formed in Dublin in 1962 and helped popularise Irish music internationally, quickly becoming one of the best Irish bands on the trad scene.

In fact, in 1989 the Irish government awarded them the honory title “Ireland’s Musical Ambassadors” .

They rose to fame playing the soundtrack to the film ‘Barry Lyndon’ and have since successfully collaborated with Van Morrision, Madonna, Sinead O’Connor and Luciano Pavarotti.

You may have seen the above collaboration with Sinead O’Connor feature in our guide to the best Irish rebel songs .

5. The Cranberries

Cranberries

Straight out of Limerick, The Cranberries are one of the more famous Irish rock bands. They describe their music as ‘alternative rock’ but with a nod to Irish folk-rock , post-punk and pop thrown in here-and-there.

Founded in 1989, their debut album Everybody Else is Doing it so Why Can’t We? put them on the road to international fame in the 1990s .

After a break, they returned in 2009 to record their Roses album with their final album ‘In the End’ released 10 years later in April 2019.

They disbanded after lead singer Dolores O’Riordan tragically passed away . She was the first Irish artist to reach one billion views on YouTube.

6. Snow Patrol

Few modern Irish groups have seen success like Snow Patrol . I’ve seen these live 5 or 6 times and they really are something else!

Snow Patrol are one of the best Irish bands to emerge from the 2000s. If you’re not familiar with them, they’re a Scottish/Northern Irish Indie rock band that have racked up millions of album sales across the globe.

Their 2003 album ‘Run’ reached 5 platinum records and from then on national fame was assured .

Still playing, the band has racked up six Brit Awards, a Grammy and seven Meteor Island awards – not bad for a group of lads who met and played their first gigs at Dundee University !

7. The Corrs

The Corrs

The next of our Irish groups, The Corrs , mixes pop rock with traditional Irish themes .

Siblings Andrea, Sharon, Caroline and Jim are from Dundalk and to date have sold 40 million albums and countless singles.

They were awarded MBEs in 2005 for their outstanding charitable works alongside Bono and The Prince’s Trust as well as independently.

You’ll widely see the Coors top American guides to the best Irish bands from the 90s , as their music is still extremely popular in that neck of the woods.

8. Westlife

Westlife are another of the more popular bands from Ireland

Westlife are one of the most notable Irish boy bands selling over 55 million albums globally .

The band formed in Sligo in 1998, disbanded in 2012 and reformed in 2018. Originally signed by Simon Cowell, the current foursome consists of Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, and Nicky Byrne.

They hold numerous awards and continue to be the biggest arena act of all time , their concerts selling out in minutes.

You’ll find many of Westlife’s top hits in our guide to the best Irish loves songs of all time (includes a Spotify playlist).

9. Celtic Women

Another of the more modern Irish bands is the hugely successful Celtic Women . They’re an all-female group with a line up that has changed numerous times over the years.

The group have racked up Billboard’s ‘World Album Artist of the Year’ award 6 times and they’ve sold out countless tours of the US.

With 10 million albums sold and a whopping 3 million tickets sold worldwide, Celtic Women have enjoyed over 12 years of success globally.

10. Thin Lizzy

Thin Lizzy

Considered one of the best Irish bands of all time, Thin Lizzy was a Dublin-based Irish rock band founded in 1969 , so you’re showing your age if you saw them play live.

Unusually for the time, the band members were from both sides of the Irish border, and from both Catholic and Protestant backgrounds .

Some of their best known tunes include ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ (1977) and ‘The Rocker’ (1973).

Vocalist Phil Lynott was the frontman and he sadly passed away at 36 in 1986. Despite trying out several new line-ups, the band never recovered .

11. Clannad

You may not be familiar with Clannad , but the chances are you’ll have heard of Enya !

Formed in 1970 as a family group (three siblings and their twin uncles) they won the Letterkenny Folk Festival in 1973 with their song ‘Liza’.

They were joined for a time between 1980 and 1982 by sister/niece Enya Brennan on keyboard/vocals before she founded her own successful career.

They have enjoyed international recognition (more than in their native Ireland) and have picked up countless awards including a Grammy, BAFTA and Billboard Music Award .

12. The Horslips

Last but by no means least in our guide to the best Irish bands is The Horslips – a Celtic Irish rock band that formed in 1970 and disbanded 10 years later.

They were never hugely successful when compared to the famous Irish bands above, but their music was considered influential in the Celtic rock genre .

Notably designing their own artwork (the group met when working together at a Dublin advertising agency), they established their own record label .

At their final gig, they played the Rolling Stones hit “The Last Time” in the Ulster Hall and disbanded to pursue other careers.

What top Irish bands have we missed?

best Irish Bands

I’ve no doubt that we’ve unintentionally left out some brilliant Irish music bands from the guide above.

In recent months, we’ve had  many  emails mentioning the likes of The High Kings, The Thrills, Dropkick Murphys and the Wolfe Tones.

If you have any Irish groups that you’d like to recommend, let me know in the comments below and I’ll check it out!

Bruce Springsteen’s Irish tour: can I still buy tickets, what songs will The Boss play, and more

Everything you need to know about springsteen’s four concerts in belfast, kilkenny, cork and dublin.

Ronan McGreevy's face

Why is Bruce Springsteen playing Ireland again. Wasn’t he only here last year?

Go tell that to his fans. Yes, Bruce Springsteen played three concerts at the RDS last May, but it hasn’t stopped his legion of fans who will attend his concerts in Belfast (May 9th), Kilkenny (May 12th), Cork (May 16th) and Dublin (May 19th).

In the past calendar year, Springsteen will have sold 350,000 tickets in Ireland, a million in total since his first concert in Ireland back in 1985.

Can I still buy tickets for his shows?

Yes there are tickets left for all his shows in Ireland according to the Ticketmaster website, though they do not come cheap. Tickets standing for Belfast are €120, for Kilkenny they start at €136.25 each with the same price for Cork’s Páirc Ui Chaoimh, while the cheapest seats left for his Croke Part concert are €161.25. The promoters advise to only buy tickets from authorised sellers.

Who are his fans?

Springsteen has one of the largest superfan bases in music. He has played to date 28 concerts in Ireland and there are quite a few fans who have been to all of them.

His fan base would predominantly be fifty and sixtysomethings who remember him from his Born in the USA days and before that.

“So you’re scared, and you’re thinking. That maybe we ain’t that young anymore,” Springsteen once sang when he was only 27.

According to concert promoter Peter Aiken, Springsteen also has a young Irish fanbase with many fans inheriting their love of the Boss from their parents.

[  Passion, booze, madness and comradeship: Bruce Springsteen’s special relationship with Ireland  ]

He is 74. Why is he still doing it?

Springsteen must have been sleeping in an oxygen tent for the last four decades. At an age when most people would be retired for 10 years, he is still playing exhausting concerts and travelling on lengthy tours.

He looks great and still bounces around the stage like a man half his age. Despite all appearances to the contrary though, he is still human. In September last year he cancelled the rest of his US tour, citing peptic ulcer disease which left him painfully debilitated.

He has since bounced back beginning in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 19th, the first of 48 concerts – yes, that figure is correct – this year.

It can’t be for the money. He recently sold his music rights to his entire output to Sony Music Entertainment for an estimated $500 million (€464 million).

It is self-evident that anybody who has seen him will know he loves touring and performing. He would not be doing it otherwise.

Will this be the last time fans will see him live?

Fans might will expect that this will be the last time to see him live, but they would have said that last year and the time before that going back to anytime in the last 20 years.

Many thought that Covid-19 would be his cue to retire. Before last year’s concerts in the RDS, he hadn’t been in Ireland for six years.

There is no indication that Springsteen intends to retire, though nobody would blame him if he did.

[  A million reasons why Bruce Springsteen keeps coming back to Ireland  ]

When do the gigs start and what songs will he play?

All four venues will open from about 5pm (subject to change). Springsteen will start all his concerts at 7pm and he is usually punctual.

He will play three hours at least with no support act. His setlists are inherently unpredictable as he can pick a song from placards held up by fans and play it. It certainly keeps the E Street Band on their toes.

Springsteen rather immodestly calls his E Street Band as the “heart-stopping, pants-dropping, love-making, earth-quaking, Viagra-taking” group.

Hyperbole aside, nobody who has seen Springsteen live, and there can’t be many music fans in Ireland who haven’t, would deny that he doesn’t give value for money.

Here is what the Boss played on Sunday, May 5th, at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium:

All under-16s must be accompanied by a person 18-plus. All under-14s must have seated tickets as they will not be permitted on the pitch/standing area.

Children under six will not be admitted. All persons entering the stadium must have a valid ticket.

Can I queue early at the venue?

Early queuing is not permitted at any venue. Venues are located in residential areas and ticket holders are requested to please respect the privacy of the residents and businesses in the local community.

What can I bring or not bring to the concert?

Prohibited items include flag poles, selfie sticks and sticks for banners. Concertgoers are advised not bring a bag unless it is totally necessary. People without bags will be fast-tracked.

Can I leave and re-enter the venue throughout the day?

No. Once you leave the venue on the show day, re-entry will not be possible.

Will roads be closed in the areas around the venues?

Yes. As the venue is situated in residential and business areas, certain roads will be closed or restricted to resident access only in and around the venue before and after each concert. See garda.ie for venue-specific traffic restrictions.

Will there be a designated area for wheelchair users at the concerts?

Yes. Please note space within this area is limited. Please check availability through ticketmaster.ie .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Billie Eilish fans lash out at ‘ridiculous’ ticket prices for 2025 tour

Fans were dismayed with many branding the sum ‘ridiculous’ in the midst of a cost of living crisis, article bookmarked.

Billie Eilish fans have called out the US pop star after it emerged that standing tickets to her forthcoming arena shows were being sold for £145 each.

Pre-sale tickets to the singer’s Hit Me Hard and Soft tour became available between 30 April to 1 May, including early access for American Express card members, while general sale takes place on Friday 3 May.

The 22-year-old will be performing a string of dates in the UK and Ireland next year, including five nights at the O2 Arena in London, two nights in Glasgow, four in Manchester and two in Dublin.

In press material announcing the tour, it was revealed that Eilish’s team had chosen to use Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange, meaning fans have the option to resell tickets to other fans in the US or Canada if they are no longer able to attend themselves.

“The tour wants to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value,” the statement said.

As tickets went on sale, however, many fans were dismayed to learn how much they were priced at, with many branding the sum “ridiculous” in the midst of a cost of living crisis.

“I honestly wanted more Billie tickets but £145 for standing is so ridiculous I can’t even process it,” one fan wrote on X/Twitter.

“£145 for Billie Eilish tickets does she not know there’s a cost of living [crisis] happening in the UK,” fan Zoe said.

Another remarked: “Me coming onto Ticketmaster seeing Billie Eilish prices then coming straight back out again. £145 for standing is this delusion?” In the replies, the fan compared the price to the first time she saw Eilish live, when she paid £20 for a ticket.

Not everyone had sympathy for fans though, as some said it was their choice to pay that much for a ticket.

X/Twitter user Billy asked: “At what point do people realise they’re being conned and priced out. If you’re buying tickets at that price then honestly you’re part of the problem now.”

Matt, the writer behind the Scientists of Sound music blog, agreed: “People paying nearly £145 for Billie Eilish tickets are part of the problem. When these venues sell out at these prices artists and promoters couldn’t care less as they’re getting away with it. Fans are being completely priced out of these events and it’s only getting worse.”

One fan, who preferred to remain anonymous, told The Independent that buying tickets to concerts often felt like an “online war”, with fans feeling pressured into paying extortionate sums or else risk missing out.

“Artists and ticketing companies know that their fans will pay any amount of money to see their favourite artists,” he said, “and it’s only getting worse because fandoms are so strong. At what point does it go too far? This feels pretty close.”

At what point does it go too far? This feels pretty close

Confirming he had paid £146 for a standing ticket at the newly built Co-op Live arena in Manchester, the fan admitted he felt exploited.

“I go to quite a few gigs a year, [and] whenever it comes to the bigger shows you’re looking at a minimum of £70 or £80,” he said. “I paid £110 for standing to see Taylor Swift at Wembley, which actually feels like a bit of a bargain now.”

The fan said that artist exploitation went beyond concert tickets: “I’ve got into collecting vinyl recently and didn’t realise how many variants there are per album with exclusive songs or photos or whatever it might be. These artists know that their fans want every version because they love them so much. It just feels unfair.”

Jason Burt bought tickets for his 14-year-old daughter and said they were around the same price they paid for Eilish’s last tour, “but slightly less than I did for [Bruce] Springsteen this time last year”.

“The price is, in my opinion, excessive, despite the fact she will be thrilled by the concert,” he said. “[My daughter] is aware of the cost and appreciates how lucky she is to be able to go.”

Mr Burt said there was “definitely an element of exploitation” involved with artists of Eilish’s size, but questioned how much involvement the artists themselves had in deciding ticket prices.

He also pointed out the other ways in which artists are able to generate revenue from their fans: “If you have 30+ formats of an album, for example, there is an implicit understanding that some fans will buy all of them, which in turns pushes its chart position exponentially,” he said.

“Similarly, merch at gigs. Some will want all of it. As a parent, I wouldn’t buy it all and i’m lucky my daughter has no interest in that level of ‘completism’, but I’m sure it puts pressure on parents at a time we can least afford it.”

A representative for Eilish declined to comment when contacted by The Independent.

Eilish recently hit out at major artists making “40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing ust to get you to keep buying more”, branding the practice “wasteful”.

She was later forced to clarify that she was not calling out fellow pop star Taylor Swift, who had recently announced a number of different versions of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department.

“I wasn’t singling anyone out, these are industry-wide systemic issues. and when it comes to variants, so many artists release them, including ME! Which I clearly state in the article,” Eilish wrote on Instagram.

“The climate crisis is now and it’s about all of us being part of the problem and trying to do better sheesh.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
