Japan travel requirements 2024: What travelers need to know

We aim to keep this post updated about Japan travel in 2024 with official Japan travel restrictions, requirements, and health and safety guidance. Our goal is to help you make informed decisions so you can travel confidently, safely, and responsibly in this new post-pandemic world of ours.

Since travel restrictions can vary by citizenship, we will be focusing our post on rules that affect U.S. citizens.

April 2024: “Tourism is really popular in Japan these days, and crowds can be difficult to avoid. T here are no more travel restrictions for Japan, so it’s a much simpler arrival process than last year. However, we still highly recommend filling out the Immigration and Customs form online for quicker arrival (see instructions below).  We showed our passports and QR code at immigration and customs, did fingerprints, and had no questions asked. Wifi in both Tokyo airports can be frustratingly slow, so it’s important to screenshot/download the QR code before departure so you can access it offline. Just as it was pre-Covid, there is a percentage of Japanese people who wear masks out and about in public.” – Michelle & Jedd, Intentional Travelers

At the end of the post, we share more on-the-ground perspectives from local residents and travelers to Japan so you can get a sense of what it’s really like.

Is Japan open for travel? Can I travel to Japan right now?

As of October 2022 , Japan is open for tourism for independent travelers. Visa-free travel for selected countries, including the US, has been resumed.

Tourists with U.S. passports can stay in Japan visa-free for up to three months. Find details and rules for entering Japan from other countries here .

Japan travel restrictions have been eased but travelers are asked to follow guidelines with regard to masks, social distancing, dining etiquette, and more.

As of April 2023 , a proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test are no longer required for all travelers arriving in Japan.

To facilitate the arrival process, it’s highly recommended to submit your information online through Visit Japan Web before travel.

Steps for Traveling to Japan: What to Know (2024)

For a smoother arrival, travelers to Japan can pre-register for airport Immigration and Customs   to receive the QR codes used for “Fast Track” at major airports across Japan.

We completed the Japan entry process in late March 2023 and again in early April 2024. It was admittedly a bit confusing, so I thought I’d share our experience and tips, as the process is still the same (apart from step 2).

step 3 Japan entry requirements

1. Register at Visit Japan Web

While the Fast Track/Quarantine procedures are no longer mandatory to complete in advance, I was glad I followed advice to pre-register through the Visit Japan Web site.

The latest they say you can register is at least 6 hours ahead of your flight to Japan .

Japan entry procedure Screenshot

2. Submit your Covid documents in advance – NO LONGER REQUIRED

3. Register for immigration QR code

Returning to the main registration dashboard on the website, select the next module “Disembarkation Card for Foreginer,” which says it’s required for landing in Japan.

Some details pre-populated from from my profile. I selected Tourism for purpose of visit. Then there are three ways to report length of stay: year, month, day; as well as a few questions about any criminal background in Japan.

Once completed, a button “Display QR code” appears below the appropriate section.

Take a screenshot of the Immigration QR code and save it to your phone . It will have a yellow line above it.

If you don’t have the QR code , there are immigration cards available to fill out at standing desks located before entering the lines. Some people got all the way up to the immigration agent and were asked to step aside to fill out a card, which are also available next to each immigration stall.

The immigration line at Narita moved steadily but took about 25 minutes since several flights had arrived at once.

When I showed the QR code, the immigration officer simply took a headshot picture and fingerprint scans, then stuck a “landing permission” stamp in my passport for 90 days. No questions asked.

4. Register for Customs QR code

Returning again to the main dashboard, finally select “Preparation for customs declaration.” This registration allows travelers to go through an electronic declaration gate, which wasn’t super clear once we were at the airport.

I entered my flight origination (Hanoi) and number of family members with me (1). Then there’s the usual customs questions – type of goods, prohibited items, monetary funds, alcohol, cigarettes, souvenirs over 200,000y.

Again, take a screenshot of the Customs QR code and save it to your phone . It will have a blue line above it.

At Narita, the customs line for QR codes are labeled “electronic declaration” in blue. There are also kiosks that allow QR code, card, and duty free, as well as those that are for physical customs card only. The lines weren’t too long so it didn’t matter much which line we chose.

The customs officer had us scan our QR code and we could see our entered data displayed on an over-sized tablet-like device at the desk. No questions asked, we proceeded to exit the airport.

5. Sign up for travel insurance

It’s recommended to obtain insurance to cover medical costs related to COVID-19 in Japan. For travel insurance that covers Covid, we use Nomad Insurance by Safety Wing.

How has the Coronavirus impacted Japan?

Japan managed impressively well compared to most countries in the early days of the pandemic. Although Japan has been previously in a State of Emergency, the lockdowns were less disruptive on Japanese daily life.

However, Japan’s inbound tourism business lay dormant for years. Japan finally began easing restrictions in 2022 and reopened to travelers in June with strict entry requirements.

Japan finally eased entry requirements for travelers in October 2022 making it easier for travelers to visit the country. Visa-free travel has also been resumed for select countries.

Vaccination in Japan started later than some other countries. Around 80% of the population has been vaccinated and 64% had received a booster shot.

Tourism is now back with record numbers of visitors, however, staffing shortages have not fully recovered.

For the current situation in Japan, including: total COVID-19 positive cases; total cases in Japan; and COVID-19 testing in Japan, please see the Japan Ministry of Health site .

What do Japan locals and recent travelers say about visiting Japan now?

What is it like to visit Japan right now? It’s our goal to provide regular updates here from real people on the ground, to help potential visitors know what to expect. The following are subjective opinions only. Official travel guidance can be found above.

January 2024 – Brandon of Zimminaroundtheworld , expat living in Japan: “Japan is seeing an increase in tourism now that the country is open to visitors. Many visitors are traveling to Tokyo and Kyoto but some towns and cities like Nikko, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, and Naha are also seeing rises in tourism.

Currently there are no travel restrictions within Japan unless it is due to environmental catastrophes like the earthquake that occurred in Ishikawa Prefecture recently. Access to healthcare in Japan is easily available and affordable. Although foreigners can sometimes pay up to 200% more for healthcare it is still cheap.

Many attractions and famous sites around Japan especially in Kyoto and Tokyo are crowded with lines that are longer then expected. In general, restaurants in Japan are smaller and can only able to accommodate up to ten people or fewer and the space can feel cramped. Like anywhere else, keep an open mind and be flexible and there will be no problems while traveling around Japan.”

September 2023 – Jackie Szeto of Life of Doing , American traveler: “My husband and I traveled to Tokyo and Nikko, Japan for vacation in September 2023. Expect large crowds at major attractions, restaurants, and trains in major cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto. Visiting other destinations such as Nikko is a nice change of pace with fewer crowds, especially on the weekdays.

It’s recommended to complete the Immigration and Customs declaration on the Visit Japan Web to expedite arrival, but it’s not required. When landing at international airports, the QR codes for Immigration and Customs are still accepted. Otherwise, all COVID protocols have been dropped in the cities. Antibacterial hand sanitizer is still provided at entrances of hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers. Some people still wear masks in crowded areas and on trains, but most go mask-free.”

crowds in Japan 2023

May 2023 – Sophie Pham of Delightful Travel Notes , traveler: “My husband and I were traveling in Japan for 11 days from May 11-21, 2023 for our vacation. I found that Japan had already welcomed visitors with open arms, free of earlier restrictions. The return of both domestic travelers and international tourists created a lively atmosphere, and crowds could be seen in a lot of places.

In May, it took us 45 minutes to clear immigration at Kansai International Airport after landing at around 7:45am.

All attractions and food venues were fully open, with no social distancing measures or mandatory mask rules, although some restaurant servers, locals, and taxi drivers still chose to wear masks. Some famous restaurants had long lines again, and popular attractions like Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, and Senso-ji-ji could get crowded during the day. If there’s a particular popular restaurant you want to try, it may be best to make your dinner reservation in advance, especially for weekend. Overall, everything is lively again and we had a great time.”

March 2023 – Michelle, Intentional Travelers, American visitor: “We enjoyed a two day layover in Japan. The online procedures and QR codes were a bit confusing but I highly recommended doing them in advance of travel to make your arrival smoother.”

February 2023 – Joel, US traveler: “For the most part the Japanese are wearing masks. I’d say mask wearing is at about 99%. Despite the crowds in the city and packed trains and subways, it honestly feels way safer than generally any place in America where mask wearing is far from the majority. ANA enforces a mask wearing requirement whereas United is pretty much a free for all.

One key thing that is good to know is at the ticketing counter they need to know your return flight info when initially checking in. We had all the other Japan travel docs as far as the gov mandated requirements but this one kinda caught us off guard. The immigration line may seem staggering but it moves. ”

2023 japan travel with masks

January 2023 – Lizzie of Wanderlust & Life , UK traveler: “I flew to Tokyo in January 2023 for 3 days as part of a stopover between Australia and the UK. For us it felt like the country is so happy to welcome tourists again. We were slightly worried about visiting or entry restrictions changing last minute but the airline kept us up to date and apart from filling out a lot of forms on arrival it felt quite normal being there.

As Japan only opened recently there weren’t as many tourists as we were expecting which was a plus really. We were made to feel so welcome in the country.

Masks are mandatory indoors and everyone seemed to be following this. The vast majority of people were also wearing masks outdoors too. Sanitiser is readily available in restaurants and tourist attractions. We didn’t encounter any contact tracing or even requests to show covid passes. The only frustration we had was that we flew JAL and we had to wear masks our whole flight which was about 14 hours in one go and this was enforced by cabin crew.”

November 2022 – Darryl H., New Zealand traveler:  “My visit to Japan involved a return to the sort of measures that, in my home country of New Zealand, had been abandoned some time ago. The first action on arriving at Tokyo’s Narita Airport, with my mask firmly in place, was to allow officials to check and confirm I had complied with mandatory online registration of evidence of my vaccination status. Once this had been done, the arrivals process was pretty much standard.

During my 10-day stay, I experienced no restrictions on my movements or activities. The differences were in the roles of masks, sanitiser and – in some instances – distancing. The wearing of masks indoors and on public transport is close to one hundred percent, whether or not they are demanded. Outdoors, in most situations, they appear to be worn by at least 98 percent of people, although in some areas later in the evening there is an obvious relaxation in standards – especially among younger people. While most tourists appear happy to comply with the standards followed by locals, the proportion of non-mask use by non-Japanese is clearly larger than by Japanese. At no stage did I see any visitor reproached for this.

There is sanitiser on hand (pun intended) everywhere. It is probably accessed by about a third of people. There are many locals who are fastidious about sanitising.

While I observed no enforced distancing on public transport or in the street, it is definitely in place in cafes and other eateries. Most places I visited had plastic partitioning between patrons, and crosses to discourage the use of every second seat. Groups or couples are, of course, welcome to sit together.

The buffet breakfast in my hotel illustrates all three of the above differences. When I arrived at breakfast each morning, masked of course, the attendant ensured that I first sanitised my hands and then put on plastic gloves. Only then could I approach the serving implements and food. I would then sit on one of two seats (the second having a cross on it), both of which were partitioned off from the next pair of seats. Seats with another seat opposite were separated by another plastic partition. If I wanted to return to the buffet for more food, I first had to remask and re-glove. Once I forgot the gloves, and was politely turned back before I could touch the serving implements.

It is not uncommon for Japanese hospitality venues to give high priority to cleanliness, but there seems to be super-high priority now. Where in New Zealand I might expect a quick wipe over of a table between customers, in Tokyo it now appears to be a thorough and sometimes deep clean.

The precautions in no way reduced my pleasure in revisiting Tokyo. And they increased at least my perception of being protected.”

September 2022 – Jackson, American visitor: “Traveling to Japan reminded me of the COVID situation in Hawaii a year ago. People go about their day with a medical mask. Every store front has hand sanitizers and thermo cameras. COIVD testing and vaccination clinics are common place. Despite these COVID precautions, Japanese residents and businesses continue to welcome visitors with refreshing grace and hospitality. Japan’s  omotenashi , beautiful scenery, and extraordinary delicacies are worth exploring and appreciating, but can tempt visitors into overlooking the uncertainty that underlines Japan. I hope visitors will take the time to learn about the challenges of the Japanese people and reciprocate Japan’s hospitality with a gracious thank you.”

Aug 21 2022 – Y., American Japanese dual citizen: “ I returned from visiting family in Japan two days ago. Travel is still tough. The plane was empty – only 20 passengers on a big airplane. My pre-travel Covid test was 10 minutes earlier than the required 72 hours so I was turned away at the airport. I scrambled to find a last minute PCR test with rapid results and rush back to the airport.”

August 2022 – Christine, American visitor: “Japan isn’t currently open to tourists. I was there for a school conference, and had to get a conference visa. One has to get a visa for Japan in advance and you can only get one with an EFRS form filled out from someone in Japan.

I had to have a negative PCR test from within 72 hours of departure time. There’s eased quarantine procedures, which depend on the countries you’ve been to in the previous 2 weeks. And you have to have the MySOS app on your phone because they might check up on you. It also expedites your entry because you can upload all the necessary forms/COVID test/questionnaire ahead of time.

Everyone wears a mask everywhere, and they’re available for cheap at convenience stores. Because I was on a university’s campus most of the time, I had to report my temperature and if I was having any symptoms to the University every day.”

japan travel march 2024

July 2022 – Brandon of https://zimminaroundtheworld.com , Expat in Japan: “Currently Japan is only doing guided tours for international tourism. Travel entry for normal tourism is not an option at the moment. I recently took a trip around central Japan and visited a variety of cities and saw hardly any tourists. It’s nice to get great photos of popular attractions without crowds of people in the photos. But at the same time, it is taking a toll on the economy. I’ve seen shops and restaurants struggle to survive here and locals begging for tourism to come back.

Masks have been worn in Japan even before Covid. To this day, the majority of the population wears masks and obeys the rules, this includes both foreigners and locals. I wear a mask when leaving my apartment and only take it off when social distancing can be achieved or while eating at a restaurant. The positive aspect about Covid is that there are no long lines to enter attractions or eating establishments. I feel public transportation is safe here as the Japanese are very good and sanitizing everything.”

Hi Great article ! I noticed you have been vaccinated once with JJ (same here) . You mentioned the requirements for boosters but it sounds like you haven’t had a booster? I tried to sort through the link page but couldn’t find any further info. So my question is I’m planning to travel after May 8th with 1 JJ vaccination, I’m Canadian, but will be coming from Indonesia. Thanks for any insight you might have

Hi and thanks for visiting our blog. While we had the single JJ vaccination, we also had boosters. I mentioned it because the Japan entry form allows you to essentially count JJ as two shots out of the three that are required. In other words, at least one booster is currently required for entry to Japan. That said, vaccine documentation will no longer be required after May 8 so you shouldn’t have to worry about it.

I am travelling to the US from Australia via Japan in September. I fly with JAL, from Melbourne (MEL) arriving at Haneda International Airport (HND), but need to fly out of Narita International Airport (NRT) to New York (JFK).

I would like to know if I will be allowed to travel, via Japan, in September.

Australia is in Blue Category and I have had 3rd dose of Covid vaccination.

I look forward to your reply soon.

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to say what will be possible in September, as we do expect the rules to change over time. Currently, foreign travelers are limited to package tours and may not use public transit. To find out if any exceptions can be made for transit between airports, you can try the Japan visitor hotline .

Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu
  • 'please' - Onegaishimasu

What religions do they practice in Japan?

That being said, March is still considered the prelude to the peak season, allowing for a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds.

Experience visiting the world's largest wooden building and Japan's biggest bronze statue of Buddha when you travel to Japan.

However, great endeavors were taken to rebuild Hiroshima and the speculations were proved wrong. During your Japan tour, you can visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), a must-see exhibition and eye opening experience. You can visit these landmarks of world history at Peace Memorial Park, located in the center of the city. Shikoku is home to the Shikoku pilgrimage route, which includes 88 temples and other sacred sites. Shikoku offers many historic locations, breathtaking spots in nature, and traditional festivals. Here on your tour to Japan, you can enjoy scenic views from the Great Seto Bridge and the Shimanami Kaido, passing six small islands to get to Shikoku. Shimanami Kaido is renowned for its beautiful drive along its picturesque toll road. Take a pleasant stroll through Shikoku Mura Village and experience an awe-inspiring masterpiece of Japanese landscape at Ritsurin Park, featuring ponds, pavilions, and a Mt. Shuin backdrop. Shikoku may be the smallest main island of Japan, but offers many spectacular attractions to experience.

Explore Kyushu during your tour to Japan, where you'll wander through an abandoned island known as Gunkanjima, and visit the site of legend where the Shinto Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave.

Kyushu is the third largest main island of Japan and offers significant landmarks, natural beauty, and vibrant cities. Our Japan tour packages will take you to the best things to see and do in Kyushu. Take a trip to Gunkanjima, translating to "battleship island", a small and abandoned coal mine with the highest recorded population density in the world. You will also visit Glover Garden, an open-air exhibit featuring mansions of former Western residents in Nagasaki. Tour to Takachiho, a town pervaded with Japanese mythology. There you can visit the supposed site of legend of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, where she hid in a cave distraught from her brother's cruel pranks, causing other gods and goddesses to attempt to lure her out. Tour was great! I had fun. CEO Sho and Tetsu were amazing in guiding us all over the locations and teaching the culture and history of shrines and streets. Catching trains & subways like ninjas, experiencing the bathing ways of japanese or using onsen is one of my favorite. Plus I’m with amazing young groups. I wish I had more time to discover more of places. I’l definitely come back!

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun

Ricardo was our trip leader and was incredible! He is so chill. Even with such a fast paced tour he was always calm and collected and always giving out recommendations and advice for things to do. The trip is fast paced and involves a lot of walking and public transport. I personally loved this as it meant I was always busy and travelling like a local. There is a good amount of free time and to be able to do Nara on the free day is great as it meant we could take our time there. The hostels were pretty good (one was a bit too cramped for the amount of people but that’s hostel travelling for you). The rest were good and to be honest it’s only a place to sleep as you’ll be so busy. I would highly recommend this trip. I had never heard of the company before but so glad I took the risk. Again I would like to thank Ricardo for being so amazing as a tour leader!

Guide was excellent however took us only to the free places and the tour guidance lasted till 1300 usually and thus you are on your own to scramble to make plans for the rest of the day and figure out how to get there etc. Seems like I paid a lot of money for the minimal touring I received from Intrepid.

Essential Japan Tour

Essential Japan

I was a solo traveller and was exclusively focused on the must-see sights of Southern Japan. Europamundo offered the exact states and locations for me. They also offered the flexibility to join or leave the tour depending on individual travel plans. The tour was operationally excellent. The guide was the best tour guide I have ever had. The hotels were centrally located or had transfer services. Wonderful trip.

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Contrasts of Japan Tour

Contrasts of Japan

A good selection of cities and attractions to visit. Generally well organised. Perhaps a few too many temples and shrines and the walk to the bridge near the palace in Tokyo was a complete waste of time. Rather unsettling to be reallocated to a different leader and group towards the end of the tour. Paco was pretty good but did not stick to his own plan to wait for the group to assemble before giving out instructions or crossing streets. His information was not always accurate - saying Sakura was not actually Cherry blossom but other stone fruit trees and primarily almond! - and advising the group not to go to breakfast at the Osaka hotel because it would be too time consuming, when it was nothing if the kind. Unfortunately most of the group took his word and had to buy breakfast elsewhere. The second leader, Ray/Moon, gave a very unbalanced account of Japan’s involvement in WW2, during our visit to Hiroshima, which was both insensitive and inaccurate. Leaders can make or break a tour since we spend so much time travelling with them. They need to allow more quiet time for private conversations, reading or sleeping.

Japan Express: Osaka to Tokyo Tour

Japan Express: Osaka to Tokyo

We had a wonderful trip and LOVED the other travelers in our group! (We are just amazed and relieved that we managed to avoid the big typhoon that came through just two days after we left...). Our leader Fuji was great. We had difficulty understanding his accent--especially at first--but we grew to really appreciate his quirky sense of humor and amazing navigation skills! Aside from the language difficulty, our only critique of him was that he readily admitted he did not know very much about some of the temples and shrines that we visited, so we did not gain as deep of an understanding as we might have with a different guide. There were times when the itinerary felt a bit rushed, but we are so glad to have had so many amazing adventures along the way, and in hindsight I wouldn't have skipped anything. We were also in Hiroshima on the anniversary of the bombing, which made the visit a bit more crowded, but also more meaningful. I will highly recommend this trip to all of my friends!

What people love about Japan Tours in March

Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.
Excellent tour. Knowledgeable and passionate guide. Tour had great value for the money. Great itinerary. I would have probably skipped Hakone and added Hiroshima if it makes sense logistically. Otherwise perfect itinerary.

24 Places to Go in Japan in 2024

December 26, 2023 by Robert Schrader Leave a Comment

Walking through Shinsekai in Osaka a few weeks ago, I passed by one of the district’s famous billiken images. I tripped over it, actually—I wouldn’t have noticed it otherwise.

It was smaller than all the others, and much more awkwardly placed—I wouldn’t have tripped over it otherwise. It was standing just outside a dimly-lit sushi counter, one with a much healthier queue than you would expect for somewhere with such yellow windows, let alone so far off the main drag.

Just before I started walking again, I saw a message inscribed around the base of the statue: “The god of things as they ought to be.” I’ll use this later , I laughed as I scrawled it down in my notebook.

Certainly, and at least in terms of traveling to Japan, 2023 was as close to the way “things out to be” as thing have been in many years. 2023 was the first full year without covid-related entry restrictions since 2019. Exploring the country felt more or less as it had during the pre-pandemic years, especially as the summer cooled into autumn and now early winter.

The world, for its part, has gotten the message, with inbound tourism figures having completely rebounded. As a result, many of the places I’m about to recommend you visit in 2024 are off-the-beaten-path, whether that means they take place in less popular seasons, or in parts of the country where foreign travelers tend not to venture.

Of course, no matter where you go in Japan next year, it’ll be an experience unlike any other. Dare I say, 2024 will be the best year—ever—to visit Japan?

Where to Go in Japan in 2024

1. sapporo snow festival.

japan travel march 2024

Allow me to be clear: The annual Snow Festival itself isn’t the only reason to visit Sapporo during winter. Whether because of warming oden shops or treasure-filled subterranean shopping malls, the city becomes its truest self when the weather is coldest, to say nothing of the fact that it’s a gateway to the rest of Hokkaido .

When to Visit: The Sapporo Snow Festival takes place February 4-11 every year. You still have time to book a 2024 trip!

READ MORE: Sapporo’s Snowiest Spectacle

2. Satsuma Peninsula

japan travel march 2024

The bad news? I didn’t see a single tree bearing Lilliputian satsuma mandarins during my entire time on the Satsuma Peninsula , in Kagoshima prefecture on Kyushu island. The good news? From thermal sand baths, to charming Samurai villages, to sprawling tea fields, I didn’t miss the pop of citrus taste for even a moment.

When to Visit: The weather is glorious during the “shoulder” travel period between late October and early November.

3. Motonosumi Inari Shrine

japan travel march 2024

Love the idea of visiting Kyoto ‘s Fushimi Inari Shrine , but hate the idea of pushing your way through crowds to get the perfect selfie? Headed instead to Motonosumi Inari Taisha in Yamaguchi prefecture, where an added bonus is that the haunting gates are right on the sea.

When to Visit: Motonosumi Inari is beautiful all year round, though the sea breeze can be bitterly cold during the winter between about December and March.

4. Matsusaka

japan travel march 2024

Kobe is the most famous place in Japan for wa-gyu beef, but it’s not the only one. Instead, board a train southward from Nagoya and get off at Matsusaka Station . In addition to a spate of underrated beef restaurants, you can get lost in the haunting quiet Matsusaka Merchant District , or take in a panorama from the Matsusaka Castle Ruins .

When to Visit: Matsusaka makes for a great cherry blossom destination, with full bloom usually around April 1. It’s relatively unknown, even among Japanese, so it almost never gets crowded.

READ MORE: Musings on Matsusaka

5. Horyu-ji

japan travel march 2024

Horyu-ji is one of the most historically significant structures in Nara prefecture, which is saying something, given that the city is famous primarily for historically significant structures. Even if you don’t know the backstory of this 7th-century temple, the sheer scale of it will amaze you.

When to Visit: Since you’re likely to visit Nara city anywhere, simply plan on stopping at Horyu-ji Station (located along the JR Yamatoji Line , which connects Nara and Osaka ) along your way. It’s beautiful 365 days per year.

READ MORE: Nara Starts Here

6. Ouchi-juku

japan travel march 2024

Over a decade on from the Great East Japan Earthquake, Fukushima is a word that still evokes negative feelings in most foreigners—don’t be one of them. Ouchi-juku village makes a great intro to the prefecture. A single stroll amid its picturesque farm houses will ensure your first trip to Fukushima-ken is not your last.

When to Visit: The inland portions of Fukushima prefecture (which also include the city of Aizu-wakamatsu ) are at their most gorgeous in early November, when the region’s autumn colors reach their peak.

7. Kenroku-en Garden

japan travel march 2024

Kenroku-en , the jewel of Kanazawa city in Japan’s Hokuriku region, is my personal favorite of Japan’s “three great gardens.” While you’ll of course want to explore the rest of what Kanazawa has to offer when you’re here, trust me when I saw that the garden alone is worth the visit, if you happen to be on the fence.

When to Visit: A landscape garden designed to spotlight Japan’s seasons, Kenroku-en is a place you’ll ideally visit at least once during all four of them.

READ MORE: How Many Days Do You Need in Kanazawa?

8. Akan-Mashu National Park

japan travel march 2024

The only thing more miraculous than the fact that the red-crested crane ( tancho ) has been brought back from near extinction? The fact that dozens of the birds come to the same park every morning, making them a reliable tourist attractions. Birds notwithstanding, the trio of lakes— Akan , Mashu , Kussharo —that dots this vast wilderness in rural Hokkaido makes the journey more than worth it.

When to Visit: While winter is the best and most picturesque time of year to photograph the tancho , I’m also partial to the beautiful autumn season in eastern-central Hokkaido.

READ MORE: Hokkaido’s Wild East

9. Okinawa (Main island)

japan travel march 2024

Most travelers are under the impression that Okinawa is a single island, rather than an archipelago, so congratulations if you weren’t among them. Indeed, while I love explore the former Ryukyu Kingdom  as a region, the main island (and Naha City ) is my favorite place to start. Get lost in Shikina-en garden, eat taco rice along Kokusai-dori , watch the sun rise over Naminoue Shrine , or take day trips to Ie and Tokashiki islands.

When to Visit: I love visiting Okinawa in summer time, although the later in summer you go (so, after September) the higher propensity there is for typhoons.

READ MORE: Is Okinawa Worth Visiting?

10. Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet

japan travel march 2024

Cherry blossoms are Japan’s most famous spring flowers, but they’re not the only ones—far from it. While you can only see four (at max) of these at the Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet near Toyama , the beauty of the Japanese Alps rising behind the scene will make you feel like you’ve hit nature’s jackspot.

When to Visit: The cherry blossoms here usually reach full bloom sometime during the first week of April.

READ MORE: The Truth About Toyama

11. Himeji Castle

japan travel march 2024

Arguably most beautiful (and certainly, the most-visited) of Japan’s 12 original castles, Himeji Castle is also by far the most mainstream entry on this list of places to visit in Japan in 2024. However, because of both its beauty and scale, as well as how easy it is to visit on a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka , I think it’s worth contending with any crowd to see.

When to Visit: While Himeji Castle is traditionally a place people go during sakura season, I’ve recently found it to be beautiful and charming during the autumn (around December 1).

READ MORE: Is Himeji Castle Worth Visiting?

12. Nagasaki

japan travel march 2024

Nagasaki isn’t having a moment, but it should be. In addition to the fact that a Shinkansen route there just opened up, Nagasaki is objectively one of Japan’s most beautiful cities. Ascend Mt. Inasa to see its skyline glittering around Nagasaki Bay , or instead explore its world heritage at ground level, be that Dutch-colonial Dejima district, one of Japan’s most impressive Chinatowns or a one-legged shrine that half-survived a nuclear blast.

When to Visit: Nagasaki is blessed with great weather all year round, so timing is not really important.

READ MORE: Nagasaki Starts Here

13. Nachi Taisha Shrine

japan travel march 2024

If you have time, I’d like to recommend you spend 3-5 days hiking the Kumano Kodo , which for my money is Japan’s most fulfilling pilgrimage route. If you don’t, then at a bare minimum make your way to Nachi-Katsuura Station , where a short bus ride will take you to Nachi Taisha shrine. Sometimes also known as Japan’s “waterfall pagoda,” this place is one of my favorite scenic views in the entire country.

When to Visit: Although the cherry blossoms here are beautiful, I love the pureness of seeing the shrine surrounded by the bright green of summer.

READ MORE: How to See Japan’s Waterfall Pagoda

14. Aomori Nebuta Matsuri

japan travel march 2024

In recent years, I’ve made a point of attending as many of Japan’s famous summer festivals as I can. While I haven’t yet been to all of them, I can say that my favorite was the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri , which takes place in Aomori , the northernmost city of Japan’s main Honshu island and one of the anchors of the increasingly popular Tohoku region.

When to Visit: The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri takes place between August 2-7 every year. If you can’t come during this time, the Nebuta Museum WA RASSE is open the entire rest of the year.

READ MORE: Tohoku’s Marvelous Matsuri

15. Senjojiki Cirque Hiking Route

japan travel march 2024

My Swiss best friend sometimes chides me for the fact that Japan has its own “Alps,” given how much less spectacular they are (in her opinion) compared to Switzerland’s. One place that always shuts her up when I send pictures of it? The Senjojiki Cirque hiking route, in Nagano prefecture near the city of Matsumoto .

When to Visit: While the main viewpoint here is a canvas for all of Japan’s seasons, a hike here is especially refreshing in July and August, when low-lying areas of Japan are scorching-hot.

READ MORE: The Ultimate Japan Hiking Guide

16. Obuchi Sasaba Tea Plantation

japan travel march 2024

The only thing better than a verdant tea field, in my opinion, is one of with Mt. Fuji rising above it. Thankfully, if you visit Obuchi Sasaba tea plantation in Shizuoka prefecture just south of the mountain, you can see both at the same time. Pair this with a visit to the flower fields just south of Higashitagano-ura Station , where you can see Shinkansen trains racing past the mountain.

When to Visit: I like visiting in April or May, when the tea plants are brighter than they are in winter, but when Fujisan still has an impressive snow cap.

READ MORE: Shizuoka Starts Here

17. Urui River

japan travel march 2024

Want to see sakura (rather than tea fields) framing Mt. Fuji, but don’t want to deal with the complication of getting to Fuji Five Lakes , the later blooming time or the insane crowds? Instead make your way to the Urui River , a tributary near Shin-Fuji Station (which is served by Shinkansen ), where a gentle waterway flanked by cherry blossom trees flows southward from the famous mountain.

When to Visit: Full bloom here takes place within a week of when it occurs in Tokyo, so usually just before or just after April 1.

READ MORE: Where to See Mt. Fuji

18. Setouchi Region

japan travel march 2024

Although it’s increasingly referred to as a single region, Setouchi (which, as its name suggests, surrounds Japan’s Seto Inland Sea ) is many destinations in one. From cities like Hiroshima , Okayama , Matsuyama and Takayama , to experiences like the Shimanami Kaido cycling route, to standalone destinations like the “floating” Itsukushima Shrine and ancient Dogo Onsen , Setouchi will take you many trips to explore.

When to Visit: Plan your trip to Setouchi based on the destinations you will visit. Cities tend to be at their most beautiful in late March or early December (amid sakura and autumn colors); natural activities tend to be better in “shoulder” months like May and November. You can enjoy delicious okonomiyaki and udon noodles all year round!

READ MORE: The Best Setouchi Base

19. Gujo-hachiman

japan travel march 2024

In Gujo-hachiman , nothing is what it seems. A great illustration of this is the town’s hilltop castle, which far from being an authentic medieval outpost is actually Japan’s oldest such reconstruction. Another way to experience this? After strolling along Igawa Lane (a drainage ditch so clean that koi swim in it), make your way to Iwasaki Sample Village , which makes fake, plastic food for restaurants all over Japan.

When to Visit: With four very well-defined seasons on account of its high elevation, Gujo (to which locals often shorten its name) is gorgeous 365 days per year.

READ MORE: The Secret of Gujo-hachiman

20. Hakodate

japan travel march 2024

I’ve been singing the praises of Hokkaido ‘s southernmost city for years—2024 bears nothing new, in that regard. Located just across the Tsugaru Strait from Japan’s main island of Honshu , and on an isthmus between two bays, Hakodate blends culture, cuisine and heritage sprawled over of Japan’s most unforgettable cityscapes.

When to Visit: Come in late April to see the hundreds of cherry trees planted within star-shaped Goryokaku Fort color the whole thing pink. For my money, it’s Hokkaido’s best hanami spot, especially when seen from above atop Goryokaku Tower .

READ MORE: Hakodate Starts Here

21. Kyotango (Kyoto by the Sea)

japan travel march 2024

Who says a visit to Kyoto has to be marred by crowds and cliché Instagram photos? Instead, board an early morning train and make your way toward the Sea of Japan , where another world awaits. Ascend the Amanohashidate viewpoint, sit down in town for fresh-caught crab sashimi or experience the charm of Ine Fishing Village .

When to Visit: Like Kyoto itself, Kyotango has favorable weather year-round, but it’s especially beautiful amid winter snow, spring cherry blossoms or autumn’s colors—when the city itself is often swamped with tourists.

READ MORE: Kyoto’s Stunning Seaside

22. Mt. Aso

japan travel march 2024

While Mt. Aso ‘s silhouette—it’s a bowl-shaped caldera—isn’t nearly as iconic as Mt. Fuji’ s, it’s also way larger (meaning there are more things to do there—hiking is only the beginning) and much less crowded than its more famous cousin. Pair a day or two here with nights in the cities of Kumamoto and Beppu , which sit just to the west and east of Aso-san , respectively.

When to Visit: I love the Aso area in May, when the green of spring is bright and new, and when there’s a high chance of being able to see a “sea of clouds” from Daikanbo Observatory .

READ MORE: Is Mt. Aso Worth Visiting?

23. Sado Island

japan travel march 2024

Niigata is one of Japan’s most underrated prefectures, full-stop, whether you tour sake breweries in Shibata , or visit an imperial city surrounded by sand dunes in Niigata City . In my opinion, however, it’s just offshore on Sado Island that that Niigata-ken casts its most dramatic spell on visitors, whether you watch an outdoor Noh performance or simply step into a sea-swept landscape.

When to Visit: I love visiting in June, when a carpet of golden daylilies covers the western coast of the island.

READ MORE: Sado Starts Here

24. Zao Onsen Snow Monsters

japan travel march 2024

Let’s end this list where we start it: Amid a magical, wintry landscape. To be sure, the hunched-over evergreen trees that take on a monstrous experience once covered in feet of snow are not the only reason to visit Yamagata prefecture’s most charming mountain onsen town during winter. However, they do add a sense of place that’s hard to get most other places in Japan.

When to Visit: It usually takes until late January or early February for the “monsters” to accumulate enough snow to take on their abominable form.

Once you have booked your cruise, you can easily book your shore excursions; we recommend you book early for the best selection.

Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Tokyo: Weather, Experiences, and Travel Tips

Tokyo is the capital city and it perfectly combines modernity and history. You shouldn't miss it when you travel to Japan. Tokyo has a climate with four distinct seasons. Spring is mild to warm, summer is hot and humid, autumn is warm and wet, and winter is cool and drier, sometimes with snow.

The best times to visit Tokyo are in spring (March to May) to enjoy the best scenery of cherry blossoms and in autumn (September to November) to appreciate the charming colorful foliage.

August is the hottest month in Tokyo with an average daily high of about 31°C (88°F). The coldest month is January, with an average daily high of 10°C (50°F).

The "plum rainy season" extends from June to mid-July and brings persistent light rain. Typhoons hit in September and October, when there is the most rainfall but in concentrated storms between drier periods.

Spring in Tokyo (March to May): Comfortable Weather and Japan's Best Scenery — Cherry Blossom

March to May, especially March and April, is the most popular travel season in Tokyo — and even in the whole of Japan — as you would experience comfortable weather with cherry blossoms blooming nearly everywhere. Temperatures range from 10–19°C (50–67°F) on average in April and there's an average rainfall of about 130 mm (5 in).

Visiting Japan during the Easter vacation could be a good option for your family. It takes about 7–10 days to enjoy the main highlights in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka as well as to take in some unique experiences. These could include enjoying a boat ride to immerse yourself in the beauty of the pink cherry blossoms along the riverside while avoiding the crowds in the park, and taking a family photo while wearing kimonos under the cherry trees.

Wearing a sweater and a light coat is adequate to cope with the weather, but also pack shirts to wear in the daytime when it gets warmer.

Insider tips: Prices during the cherry blossom season are about two or three times higher than usual. Many traditional ryokans and excellent guides are also fully booked in advance, so we highly recommend that you book hotels and flights at least 3-6 months in advance.

Summer in Tokyo (June to August): Hot, Humid, and Big Fireworks Celebrations

Summer (June to August) is the hottest and most humid time in Tokyo. Temperatures range from 26–30°C (79–86°F) on the average summer day, and the average rainfall is about 160 mm (6 in) per month.

When traveling in Tokyo in summer, the heat is not a big problem to worry about. You could enjoy plenty of indoor activities inside air-conditioned buildings and travel to the attractions in a private air-conditioned car, which is also helpful to minimize the inconvenience of any rainfall.

It does not rain every day (12 days a month on average) and you can travel around easily. Although it is the rainy season, many family groups still visit Japan to celebrate their kids' graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, or just for an annual vacation.

Big fireworks celebrations are popular and lively activities in Tokyo during the summer. Imagine wearing a yukata (summer kimono) and enjoying the colorful fireworks in the cool summer breeze. It is not only a visual feast but also provides you with an opportunity to soak up the traditional cultural atmosphere.

July to early September is the only time you would be allowed climb Mount Fuji. You could enjoy cooler temperatures, fresh air, and sea of clouds there.

It's suitable to wear summer clothes, such as shirts, shorts, sunglasses, and hats. You are recommended to take an umbrella in case of sudden rain.

Insider tips: June is an ideal time for a summer vacation in Japan as a family with teenagers. You could enjoy slightly cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and cheaper costs.

Autumn in Tokyo (September to November): Cool Temperatures and Colorful Fall Foliage to Appreciate

The cool weather and colorful fall foliage make autumn (September to November) another popular time to visit Tokyo and other areas of Japan. Temperatures during this period have a pleasantly mild average range of 15–22°C (59–72°F).

September and October (the typhoon season) are characterized by a high average rainfall of about 230 mm (9 in) per month, while November tends to be much drier with a moderate average rainfall of 96 mm (4 in).

You could appreciate the fall foliage almost everywhere in November , take a leisurely stroll or enjoy a cup of steaming tea in a tranquil Japanese courtyard teahouse to admire the colorful foliage and enrich your experience in Japan.

The weather changes frequently in Tokyo in fall, but making sure that you have a shirt, a mid-layer, and a rain coat should be enough to cope with it. If you travel during the typhoon season, don't forget to take an umbrella.

Winter in Tokyo (December to February): Cold but Good for an Onsen Experience

Winter (December to February) is the coldest time in Tokyo but it's not too cold for traveling , with an average high temperature of about 11°C (52°F). It's the driest time of the year, with an average rain/snowfall of about 56 mm (2 in).

Hakone , located about 2 hours away via Japan Railways (JR) from Tokyo, is the best place to relax in a traditional Japanese-style ryokan with an onsen (hot spring bath) , where you could enjoy the stunning snowy trees and mountains surrounding you.

To enjoy some winter fun, you could take a JR train to Nagano, which would take about 1½ hours. There, you could witness the unique sight of snow monkeys soaking in warm hot springs to keep themselves warm.

Celebrating Christmas and New Year in Tokyo would allow you to see the dazzling Christmas lights, pray for good luck in the coming year at a shrine, and watch the big fireworks to welcome the New Year. It one of the busiest times to travel, so we recommend that you book flights and hotels at least 3-6 months in advance.

You'd better wear thick clothes to keep warm in Tokyo in winter. We recommend that you take a down jacket, gloves, and waterproof boots.

Golden Week crowds greeted with high temperatures as holiday period kicks off

The departure lobby for domestic flights is crowded with travelers at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on Saturday, the first day of this year's Golden Week holidays.

Temperatures soared Sunday across a broad swath of the country, as Japan marked the second day of the Golden Week holiday period, with millions of travelers venturing to both international and domestic destinations.

Meanwhile, Osaka and central Tokyo reached 28 C, well above averages for this time of year, while Nagoya hit 28.3 C. The mercury in the cities of Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, and Fukushima also hit 30 C.

As Japan began its Golden Week holidays, which last until May 6, crowds of travelers headed to airports and train stations for trips to visit their hometowns or resorts, with families carrying hefty suitcases forming lengthy lines at airline counters.

Around 835,200 people were projected to travel through Narita International Airport in Chiba Prefecture for international flights and 263,300 people for domestic flights during the busy holiday period.

An estimated 23.3 million people in Japan, about 90% of pre-pandemic levels, were expected to travel during the 11-day period, according to a report from travel agency JTB.

The Golden Week holidays this year are the first since the government downgraded the classification of COVID-19 to match that of the seasonal flu last May, lifting all remaining travel guidelines due to the virus.

Destinations consistently favored by Japanese tourists such as Hawaii and Guam were popular, while nearby South Korea and Taiwan were choices for those mindful of the weak yen, as reported by NHK.

A total of 2.96 million seats were booked for bullet trains and other reserved trains from Friday up until the end of the holiday period, a 16% increase from last year, according to the nation’s six Japan Railway operators.

But rain could put a damper on plans in some areas on Monday, when a low-pressure system is expected to approach western Japan, with rain likely drenching the Kyushu region from the morning and spreading to the Chugoku and Shikoku areas around noon. Some areas are expected to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms.

In the Kinki region, rain is expected starting in the evening, but the Tokai, Kanto and Hokuriku regions may see some sun with a chance of rain at night. In Okinawa, rain and thunderstorms are likely until around noon, mainly in the southern islands.

Tokyo, Nagoya and Naha, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, were forecast to see temperatures of 27 C, 25 C and 29 C, respectively.

On Tuesday, rain is anticipated from the Kyushu to Kanto areas, mainly in the morning. In the Tohoku region and Hokkaido, showers are likely to continue into the afternoon, possibly turning into heavy rainfall.

Wednesday will see scattered rain in Okinawa, Kyushu, extending to Kanto, but the skies are forecast to clear on Thursday from Kyushu to Hokkaido, potentially creating ideal conditions for Golden Week outings next weekend.
