Q&A: Neal Schon On The ‘Freedom’ Of Journey, His Friendship With Carlos Santana And Much More

Journey will release Freedom , their first album in 11 years, this Friday (July 8). With the 11-year gap between records, the band's longest break between albums, and the presence of drummer/producer Narada Michael Walden, Freedom , according to guitarist Neal Schon, is a true representation of who Journey is in 2022.

Neal Schon on Journey’s New LP ‘Freedom,’ Ambitious 50th Anniversary Plans

It’s been 11 years since Journey released their last studio record, and for a while it was looking like they’d never get around to making one. “Nobody was really interested in making new music,” Journey founder and guitarist and Neal Schon tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from his California home. “It’s very difficult to get new material played and to get people familiar with it before you go out and play live. Everybody in the band was like, ‘I don’t want to do it.'”

Overthinking It

Album Covers That Blow My Mind: Journey’s Escape

Album Covers That Blow My Mind: Journey’s Escape

A deconstruction of the cover art for the journey album escape ..

[This is the first in what will hopefully be a series of deconstructions of album covers that blow our minds .]

Journey’s seventh studio album, “Escape,” was released in 1981 and spawned no less than four hit singles: “Who’s Cryin’ Now,” “Still They Ride,” “Open Arms,” and everyone’s favorite karaoke/wedding/cryptic Soprano ‘s soundtrack choice, “ Don’t Stop Believin’ .” As if that somehow weren’t enough, these songs all come wrapped in fantastically mind-blowing cover art:

journey-escape

What’s so mind blowing about this?

The Birth of “Leet Speak”?

Did you notice the strange spelling of “Escape” (or rather, “E5SC4P3”) on the cover of this album? Looks pretty “1337,” doesn’t it?

e5c4p3

Im in ur st3r30 rockin ur d00dz

Overthinking It readers are probably familiar with (and at least partially annoyed by) the prevalence of “1337” or “leet” speak across the internet. For the uninitiated, leet speak is the substitution of letters with numbers or other symbols to create a symbolic language decipherable only be a select–or shall I say elite–or shall I say “leet”–few.

Though leet speak became widespread with the proliferation of online gaming, in particular, Doom, the practice originated back the early 1980’s, when its use was limited to an actually somewhat “elite” corps of hackers and other sophisticated computer users to mask illicit activity (software piracy and porn distribution) from BBS administrators.

Hmm. Early 1980’s. You mean, like 1981 early?

Obviously, it’s a stretch to think that either the band Journey or the artist responsible for this album cover invented leet speak, or was even aware of its existence at the time. Yet, despite my best attempts at googling, I couldn’t find a more specific date for the birth of leet speak other than “the early 80’s,” which leaves open the oh-so-slight possibility that Steve Perry was teh 0r1g1n4l h4x0rs.

d0nt st0p bl3v1ng w00t!

d0nt st0p bl3v1ng w00t!

Even if the leet phenomenon and the Journey album art are causally unrelated, the two combined do result in some pretty rich irony. Leet speak was originally used by an elite few to mask the true nature of contraband material from both the unknowing masses and from the authorities. Journey, on the other hand, was the polar opposite from “contra”-bands (pun intended) like AC/DC or Judas Priest and strove to maximize its appeal among the unknowing masses.

So why use the cryptic spelling of E5C4P3 on its album cover? Perhaps to convey a sense of mystical other-worldliness to go along with…

The Star Ship Scarab Beetle

Power ballads. The final frontier.

Power ballads. The final frontier.

By now, you’re probably used to seeing the scarab beetle in association with Journey–it’s featured prominently on their mega-selling Greatest Hits compilation, of which I am a proud owner–but at the time of Escape , it was only the second instance out of their seven studio albums to use the scarab beetle on its cover. The previous album to do so, Departure , was released a year prior to Escape, and also featured other-worldly imagery, but Escape kicks things up several notches with its depiction of a warp-speed beetle busting out of some sort of spherical object.

Dude, it's a dung beetle.

Dude, it’s a dung beetle.

(Updated April 23, 2017: Twitter user @raycoopteacher pointed out that Journey released a live album  Captured that featured the dung beetle prior to  Escape. )

Google mysteriously comes up short in providing an explanation as to why the band chose to incorporate the scarab beetle on its album covers. Fortunately for us, that allows us to create our own interpretation.

First, a quick primer on Egyptian mythology: the scarab beetle was notable for a couple of things: first, it’s a dung beetle. Yup, the band Journey chose the same beetle that begins its life eating from the ball of shit that it was born into, then later rolls its own ball of shit into which it will plant its own eggs. Nothing says “80’s power pop/rock” like shit-eating beetles, right?

So that makes Steve Perry the shitty Paul McCartney?

So that makes Steve Perry the shitty Paul McCartney?

Instead, let’s examine the other thing that the dung, er, scarab beetle is notable for. It’s a symbol of the Egyptian god, Khepri, who in turn is a symbol of rebirth, the sun, and creation. The solar association helps make some sense of the Departure album art–the beetle in that image is one of several heavenly bodies depicted–but that still leaves a lot to be explained for the star ship beetle on the cover of Escape.

The best explanation I can provide centers around the rebirth and escape elements. Rebirth, in the case of Journey, refers to the band itself: they started out as a jazz fusion/progressive rock group, but with the addition of singer Steve Perry in 1977, were reborn as a straight pop group. As for escaping, well, that one’s easy: “They took  the midnight train, goin’ anywhere…” Granted, a dung beetle traveling at light speed is several steps removed from the midnight trains referred to in “Don’t Stop Believing,” but you get the idea.

Bonus Video Game Postscript:

Or maybe I’ve got it wrong. Perhaps the scarab beetle is meant to be a vehicle for the band to escape from groupies and unscrupulous promoters:

Yup, that’s the Journey video game based on the album Escape. Hmm, it looks rather difficult. Perhaps only the most “elite”—or dare I say, “1337”—players could truly master this one.

And now it all comes together.

Nothing about the countdown progression of “5-4-3” in the l33t speak letters?

No one has noticed the word “HOLY” in the breaking glass at the top?

The scarab beetle looks like a computer mouse to me. A rocking computer mouse.

I thought the same, I think the artist of the cover is a prophet , it took a message of God and put it on a draw, in 1981 mouses were not that broadly used , and if you google it, they were kind of square , this ship looks like a 2000’s mouse. and another coincidence is that the artist last name is Mouse. could you decipher the message

Mlawski amazing you mention the beetle looks like a computer mouse, as the artist who came up with the cover is named Stanley Mouse…. no kidding. Hmm..

@Sharper: good catch. I wonder where the 2 and 1 are.

Something else that I didn’t get around to overthinking: the way “Journey” is tilted 90 degrees on its side. I desperately want there to be some sort of hidden message. The N and E become a Z and W sideways. Could that be a clue?

In terms of the name Journey on its side, perhaps the artist wants us to view the cover at the angle so the word journey is standing upright and legible. I’m still looking… help me out here

@mlawski: ME FRIGGIN’ TOO!! So could that be intentional, as well? It would fit with the leetspeak, wouldn’t it? Did computer mice look like that yet?

Um, how could you forget the glaringly obvious Freudian subtext- here not a phallus, but the oddity of sperm actually escaping from the egg? Although to be fair (and the space theme helps this) it could equally be a fully formed fetus and the womb.

Ouch, that childbirth looks quite painful. Look at all the rips, and the deep red… Poor space woman metaphor.

Maybe it’s because my time zones are all messed up, and maybe I’m severely jet lagged, and maybe, just maybe it’s the result of a deranged thought process, or just too simple a mind, but am I the only one seeing the phallic representation here?

Journey’s live album “Captured” thus the next being Esc4p3(between Departure and Esc4p3) also featured the Beetle on the cover as well as the infinity symbol, which started with the album “Infinity”. Esc4p3 was the first album with Jonathan Cain, who replaced original keyboardist Gregg Rolie, so it kind of was an escape from their past sound. The original covers also had raised letters and art.

Recently I saw videos from the flat earth society (not that I believe it is) and it looks like the beatle is breaking free of the alleged dome that keeps humanity trapped inside. It could symbolize ascension and our souls being able to join with cosmic consciousness, freed from the confines of what some feel is a prison planet.

Mark Lee, I guess you are over thinking it. The band has always been fixated on the future and celestial travel, which they featured on the album covers. The members are seen floating like zero gravity, being transported on Look into the Future, Evolution, Departure, Captured, Escape and Frontiers. All had space travel as a theme one way or another…it’s the band’s JOURNEY together. I remember the tilted letters when the album Escape was released and it made you thing it was some alien writing. The Scarab was also a symbol of transformation which the band adopted in late 70’s. You have to realize we landed on the moon in 69 and the band was formed a couple of years later.

Journeys Music (with Steve Perry,of course,)transports the fans minds, hearts, and souls, to a whole other dimension. Journey has always poured its heart and soul in to it’s music. That is why Journey and it’s music has always resonated with me, and all it’s other devoted fans. I do not care if the music of Journey is esoteric in any way, shape,or fashion, they will always be The best to me,and all there worldly fans. Steve Perry is and always, shall be known, as the heart and soul of Journey. #1 fan, and admirer, for life.

I’ve taken the beetle to be a Jungian reference.

Diving in to The Red Book, it seems to be about synchronicity, awakening, and awareness of the human journey.

Like many bands of the mid 70’s- early 80’s, Journey presented their message/beliefs in their album covers. The limited access to see these bands in media platforms (tv award shows, later MTV), other than in concert, made album covers a big part of a fan’s ‘experience’. Journey was a leader in giving fans some amazing album covers.

Nobody has yet mentioned that their covers represented their belief in Astral Projection, an out of body experience, and reincarnation. Thus the connection with the Egyptian Scarab (Beetle), space travel, pyramids. This belief was shared with other bands in that era – Earth, Wind, and Fire is a good example.

As far as the Leet message, computer coding was in its infancy back in 81. If you were in a high school math class you may have been introduced to something called FORTRAN. This is what you’re seeing on E5C4P3.

https://www.deviantart.com/leathurkatt-tftiggy/art/Journey-Album-Covers-404525347

Departure Captured Escape

I think it’s as simple as that. The sphere the beetle is escaping from is the same one it’s captured in on the cover of the previous album.

You can almost make out Holy Horus in the cracking orb.

Almost zero people knew about 1337 at this point. However, it’s likely that the among the few people who did know, there were Sound Engineers if they were making/experimenting with computer sound creation/manipulation, which at that point was extremely low level programming. They’d certainly be what we’d consider 1337. Also, amongst the 1337 community there has always been a very close affinity and connection with such low level sound and music programming. Also, this is the type of music that alot of the 1337 computer creators and manipulators listened to. Also the fact that the cover points to Egyptian Gods and far-reaching ideas WAY outside the mainstream makes it far more likely to have had more meaning to the 1337folk. It’s entirely possible that this album cover created the movement, and 1337 users adopted it in tribute, at least for much of it. There would be a single handful of people who would have used it at that time, and in 81 you could pretty much say whatever you wanted in IRC, the entire internet was Dark web at that point. The fact that Journey is flipped 90 with a font design purposefully intended to be confusing for the layman and appear foreign is the very essence of 1337, and points to the E5C4P3 being their own original concept as well. Very likely they started the movement, not the band directly, but Sound Engineers and Designers of the day on the project.

Also, the Breaking out theme probably really resonated with the smarter, more technically elite people of the day, as it represents really the movement of the entire internet at that point, and the liberating ideas of the global perspective seeking to break limits and barriers and dogmatic views and beliefs oppressing and limiting the masses of the day. In truth, the cover represents currently much of what many people on the internet still feel today. It seems just as relevant to all of the people who are currently breaking free of the mainstream ideologies, looking beyond common beliefs and mass media consumption, breaking through the barriers that have been put in place to keep us confined, to an interspatial, limitless journey far beyond what “they’d” like us to believe. It really represents much of the Dark Web today.

It’s Osiris,or Baal or (INSERT OTHER CULTURES SUN GOD HERE), aka SATAN. They are obviously Satan worshipers.

The spaceship beetle bursting from the sphere, to me, is an obvious follow up to the album art for Captured. The cover art is spherical and the band members are shown looking trapped in a sphere on the back. Clearly they “escaped” from being “captured” on their next album by bursting through in a space beetle. I was a little surprised this wasn’t in the blog post, or am I the only one with this opinion?

All this talk about beetles and Egyptian mythology and no mention whatsoever about crediting the artist(s) who created it. One should think think that would be – oh I don’t know – maybe the very first thing that you would bring up.

does the word between journey and escape spell or mean anything? it almost looks like a word upside down and backward .

Watch: CHRIS DAUGHTRY And LZZY HALE Drop Video For Cover Of JOURNEY's 'Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)'

Multi-platinum rock act DAUGHTRY has released the official music video for its cover song, "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" , a tribute to legendary rock band JOURNEY featuring vocals from Lzzy Hale , lead singer of HALESTORM .

The hit cover, which was originally made available in January, exactly 40 years to the day that the original song was released, is currently sitting at No. 6 on Mediabase 's Active Rock chart. The track debuted at No. 1 on iTunes ' All Genres chart. True to its roots with an updated grit, the single has racked up millions of streams on YouTube and Spotify , earning praise from heavy-hitters like Variety , Billboard , Consequence and American Songwriter , among others.

"This was an unexpected video in a lot of ways," Chris Daughtry admits. "I don't think either of us, Lzzy or myself, were actually 'dressed' for a video shoot. We were basically just trying to get some b-roll to capture the studio experience of recording this track. But when we got the footage back, it was like, 'Well… This looks way cooler than I expected, so… I guess we have a music video now?' Haha. It was the most low-key, low-pressure video I've ever done."

“There's a magic that happens when you decide to do a project with people you've adored for years," Hale adds. "We cultivated that chemistry into such a beautiful launch point, and 'Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)' is the result of that friendship. Thank you to everyone for giving this song wings, and thank you to the incredible Daughtry for inviting me to fly alongside!"

The visual comes hot on the heels of DAUGHTRY 's sold-out show at London's Royal Albert Hall last week, where the band surprised fans with a performance of the duet, bringing Hale onstage as a musical guest.

When DAUGHTRY 's cover of "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" was first released, Lzzy said in a statement: " Chris Daughtry and I have been threatening to unleash a duet for years. What better way to do that than by paying tribute to one of our mutual influences…. JOURNEY !" said Lzzy . "This song is not only part of the 'Stranger Things' soundtrack, but has been my go-to for karaoke for as long as I can remember! I'm so honored to have been a part of this and I hope it makes you smile as big as I did while recording it!"

Chris added: "I've always loved the song and I was wanting to do a classic cover and my wife and I were watching the 'Stranger Things' season finale and there's this incredibly intense scene and 'Separate Ways' was a big part of this scene. It was so moving just the way it was used, it felt so cool and epic and I was immediately like 'THIS is the one! We have to cover this song.' Then I was, like, 'How can we make this extra special? What if it was a duet? What if we got Lzzy on it!!??" Needless to say I was pumped she said yes and I absolutely love how it turned out."

DAUGHTRY , one of the most visible and best-selling rock bands of the 21st Century, has sold out concerts across the globe. Their debut album, the self-titled "Daughtry" , was the top-selling album of 2007, and was the fastest-selling rock debut album in SoundScan history. It was also nominated for four Grammy Awards and won four American Music Awards and seven Billboard Music Awards , including "Album Of The Year". The subsequent albums, "Leave This Town" (2009), "Break The Spell" (2011) and "Baptized" (2013) have all gone platinum, with "Cage To Rattle" (2018) certified gold. In 2020, DAUGHTRY released its first single from the album "World On Fire" , which marked a return to the band's rock roots and the top of the charts.

Traditionally, these journals are used for an entire year, containing 365 unique questions – one for each day. The idea is to keep the journal for five years, answering the same question on the same date each year. This way, you end up with a fascinating record of how your thoughts and experiences evolve over time.

What I love about this format is the ease and simplicity. Answering just one question a day is a breeze, making it effortless to maintain a consistent journaling habit – often the biggest challenge for many travelers who want to keep a travel journal.

I adapted this concept for travel. Instead of spanning years, it covers your trip’s duration, with the same set of questions repeated each week. This approach is perfect for travelers who start journaling with enthusiasm but find the task daunting as their journey progresses. With just a short question to answer daily, it’s easy, fun, and incredibly rewarding.

So now that you understand the concept, let’s find out how to make your own travel journal.

I will share two options below; A DIY version and a free printable one . Neither one is better, just pick whichever one suits you best!

two examples of how to make your own jorunal

Option1: DIY travel journal

The first option I’ll share is a true DIY travel journal. You start with an empty paper or notebook and craft your own.

If you are looking for the free printable, scroll down to the free printable travel journal template section.

Materials needed

  • Paper (A4 that you fold in two to make a booklet or any type of notebook)
  • Crafting materials (if you want to make it look nice, but this is not necessary)

How to make your own travel journal

Step 1: find a notebook.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter if you just fold A4 paper in half and use a stapling machine to bind it. If you buy a simple notebook, or if you go all the way and buy a beautifully designed travel notebook.

I’m a big bullet journal fan, so I just make a collection and dedicate a few pages of my daily bullet journal to this Question-a-day journal. That way it’s integrated with all my other work and travel notes.

But feel free to do whatever fits you. All that matters is that you actually start and that you enjoy working on it. If you need a beautiful design to feel inspired, then by all means go for it. But the design should not be a reason to not get started.

The size of the notebook doesn’t matter either. I usually prefer an A5 format, because it’s small and easily fits in my backpack. But really, anything works. Lined, dotted, squared, or blank paper, all is fine.

A red ring binder notebook

Step 2: Make the pages

At the top of each page write one of the questions below, followed by a prompt for the right date. So weeks 1, 2, 3, etc (depending on how long you’ll be traveling)

  • What did you eat today?
  • Who or what made you smile today?
  • What did you do today?
  • Did you learn something new today? What was it?
  • What is the most beautiful thing you saw today?
  • Did you come across any challenges today? What was it? How did you overcome it?
  • What was your favorite moment of the past week?

A notebook with a page and a question and five weeks to answer it

Of course, there are many different variations of questions you could ask. I found these seven the most interesting ones. But check the section about other prompts below for more question ideas.

I usually don’t add the answer sections for each week yet (I only showed it in the example above to give you an idea), because I don’t know how much space I’ll be needing for my answers. But you could add those if you want to make sure everything fits on one page.

An example of a question a day journal

Step 3: Decorate your travel journal

Now, I’ll admit. I am not the most creative person out here.

I can’t draw and I have the handwriting of an 8-year-old. So when I get crafty with my journal without any template, stickers, stamps, or premade anything, it will look like a mess. And that’s why I go for simplicity,

But if you are nothing like me, this is where you can get crazy. Get out your markers, crayons, glitter, and whatnot to make this travel journal feel like you. You could even add more blank pages so you have more options for photos, doodles, and other fun keepsakes from your trip.

Step 4: Start answering the questions every day

Now that your journal is finished, all you need to do is answer one simple question a day. No endless essays, writer’s block, or not feeling inspired. You’ll know exactly what to write and it will only take a few seconds.

What I like even more, is that even if I forgot to journal one day. I can easily trace back and still answer that one question from yesterday.

Option 2: Free printable travel journal template

Alright, if you’re looking for a printable travel journal, then I’ve got you covered too. Find out how to make your own travel journal from my free printable PDF below!

How to use the free printable travel journal pdf

Step 1: choose and download your cover.

For you to use this journal every day and make the most out of it, you need to be super enthusiastic about it. And one way to get you excited is to help you find a design that matches your personality. And that’s why I came up with five different covers so that you can pick one that matches your spirit best.

Choose your favorite down below, or head over to Canva and make your design, as long as you print it on the right side of the paper in landscape shape, it will work too.

A blue cover of a free printable travel journal

Step 2: Print the cover

Print it on an A4 paper and fold it in two. I deliberately put it on landscape and on the right side of the paper, so you can fold it in two and use it as the cover.

Step 3: Print the questions

Now that we have your cover, it’s time for the questions, which you can download here .

They are in A4 PDF format, but you can easily print them as a booklet by using the right printer settings, I explained below.

The complete set of free printabel question pages

Print instructions

  • Click print once you’ve downloaded and opened the PDF on your computer
  • Go to printer settings and select booklet
  • Print double-sided

With these settings, your printer will automatically put them in the right order, so that when you fold it in two, you will have a book from question 1-7, and extra notes in the back.

printer settings with arrows to print a booklet

The settings might look slightly different on your computer, but it works the same for every printer.

Feel free to add more blank paper so you’ll have more notes. Or simply print more of the last “notes” page.

DIY travel journal tips

There are a few things that can help you to make the most out of this travel journal.

  • Make this journal your own: the more it feels like your own project, the more enthusiastic you will be to write every day
  • Set a specific time or moment when you will answer the question
  • Start each answer with your current location followed by “:” and the answer. As travelers we visit so many different places that sometimes just seeing the name of a city you were at helps you set the mood and remember the content when you’re reading your travel journal years from now

A DIY travel journal with questions

DIY travel journal variations

As you probably already noticed, there are about 1000 different ways in which you can style your travel journal.

I just shared five printable travel journal templates with you, as well as my super simple but effective handwritten method. But remember. This journal is about you. It should be a design that invites you to write every day and create a beautiful travel memoir for your future self.

So go wild and use which ever design you want.

Besides differences in designs, you can also add different questions that are important to you, or that you want to remember from your trip. I’ll share a few of my other questions below.

I use these when I make my monthly travel journal for longer trips (more about this monthly journal below).

  • Who did you meet today?
  • Did you travel with someone today? Who is it?
  • What was the weather like today?
  • When was the last time you did something kind for someone else?
  • What surprised you today?
  • When was the last time someone did something kind for you?
  • Did you fall for any tourist traps this week?
  • What was your favorite accommodation up until now?
  • Did you do something that scared you this week?

The printable travel journal prompts I shared with you today are for a five-week trip, but of course, you can also use them for a two-week vacation or any other duration.

If you’re traveling longer than 8 weeks, I would advise you to make a journal with a question for each day of the month. That way you’ll have more variation in the types of questions asked and the things you will remember from your trip.

Just check out my list of questions above for more inspiration. And if you want more help, or if you’re not feeling creative, Shoot me a message and I will send the full list of monthly questions as well as a free monthly printable that I use as well!

Midjourney Prompts for Book Covers (+ Prompt Examples)

It's not easy to create art for book covers, but Midjourney can help with that or at least point you in the right direction.

It's not easy to create art for book covers. You have to grab the attention of potential readers with a single image. That's why it's necessary to hire a good designer for book covers.

If you're a designer who has worked on book covers before, you already know that you might need to go through countless iterations of your design until you have a satisfied client. This requires a lot of time.

Using Midjourney to generate design drafts can help you be more productive, keep your clients happy, and save you a considerable amount of time. Today, I'm going to show you some prompt examples for book covers.

midjourney prompts for book covers

How to Write Midjourney Prompts for Book Covers

It's quite simple to write Midjourney prompts for book covers. The technique I find works best is to simply explain what the book is about in a concise way. You should also mention the genre whenever it can have an impact on the generated design.

As far as the aspect ratio goes, I like to leave it on default when I'm creating book cover designs.

Make sure you use keywords in your prompts whenever it makes sense to do so. The keywords you use will greatly influence the overall design of the book cover.

Before we get down to the prompt examples, I have to say that at the time of writing this article there isn't a feature that enables you to edit text in Midjourney. They are planning to release it in the future, but for now you'll only see random symbols generated instead of actual text.

It may seem weird to some people to look at book covers with random symbols, but remember that when you use Midjourney to create these images they should serve only as inspiration for the actual book cover you'll design .

10 Midjourney Prompts for Book Covers

I'll show you how to effortlessly write Midjourney prompts for book covers. You will pick up on what I'm doing through the 10 prompts that I'll share below. Let's start.

/imagine book cover design for a fantasy book set in a magical land where the battle for peace an order in the world has been going on for centuries, monsters, magic, undead, heroes, warriors --v 5

midjourney prompt for book covers

Now, this is what a good book cover looks like. I'm really impressed with the design here. The prompt is also quite concise and includes important keywords that shape the design of the book cover.

/imagine book cover design for a digital marketing book, online marketing, social media marketing, SEO marketing, affiliate marketing --v 5

midjourney prompt book cover design

I decided to use a very simple prompt here that consists of only several keywords. Digital marketing books are widely popular and often vary in the design of their book covers, so it was definitely interesting to see what Midjourney would generate as a cover.

I would say that the AI model did a pretty good job. The hands definitely look a bit weird, but this is only a draft design. You'd need a marketing expert/author to pose like this for the actual book cover.

/imagine book cover design for a crime mystery novel, man who is wrongly convicted of murder quietly learns about the criminal underworld while in prison and gets out seemingly a good man but what people don't know is that he is about to commit some terrible crimes

midjourney prompt for crime mystery book cover

This is a completely different type of prompt compared to the previous one. Instead of using keywords, I only described what this fictitious book is about. The plot is something that just came to me when I started writing the prompt.

/imagine book cover design for an astrophysics and astronomy book, the cover design should feature illustrations of some phenomena in the universe, wondrous, awe --v 5

midjourney prompt for astronomy book cover

One of my favorite books of all time is A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. I wanted to create a book cover in Midjourney that could be applied to that very same book.

/imagine book cover design for an adventure book about a young explorer who has gone to the North Pole to retrieve a long lost treasure that has been buried for thousands of years --v 5

adventure book cover prompt in midjourney

I would really like to read a book like this. Imagine if there was treasure buried beneath the ice by a forgotten civilization at the North Pole that's been there for thousands of years. That would be absolutely mindblowing.

/imagine book cover design for a science fiction novel about two planets on a collision course, the planets will ultimately destroy each other so people on both worlds must find a way to enjoy their lives before it's all over --v 5

sci-fi novel book cover in midjourney

Should I start writing books? I came up with these plots at a moment's notice. I don't even know how my brain does it. This would also be a fun movie to watch. It can be either a serious, introspective book or a comedy where people let loose and party until their last days.

/imagine book cover design for a science fiction book about a dystopian future where artificial intelligence has taken over the world and humans must band together to survive --v 5

ai book cover midjourney

No, I don't think that artificial intelligence will take over the world. This is only a work of fiction and I thought the prompt would help create a dramatic book cover, which it definitely did. If I saw this cover at a bookstore, I'd buy it immediately.

/imagine book cover design for a travel book that talks about some of the most beautiful natural landscapes around the world, inspirational, motivational, travel --v 5

midjourney prompt travel book cover

The two stones on the table are such a random addition to the image, but the overall book cover design is extraordinary. I love books that contain beautiful photography.

By the way, you can create photorealistic images of nature in Midjourney. If you want to learn how I suggest you read my article about Midjourney prompts for nature . It's an easy-to-follow guide that will help you learn how to write the perfect prompts for generating photorealistic images.

/imagine book cover design for a romance novel about two college students who fall in love together and go on various wholesome adventures --v 5

romance novel book cover in midjourney

I wanted to create something wholesome, so I figured it makes sense to generate a book cover design for a romance novel. The prompt here is so simple that I didn't even go into any details aside from mentioning that the two people are college students.

/imagine book cover design for a time travel fiction book about a man who thinks he created a machine that enables him to travel to alternate universes only to find out that he actually made a time travel machine --v 5

time travel fiction book cover midjourney

I'm not sure whether someone wrote a book with a similar plot already or not, but if one exists I have to find it. This would be an amazing read, and the experience would be even better with a book cover design like the one above. This is arguably the best book cover design Midjourney generated while I was writing this article .

Final Thoughts

What's incredible is that Midjourney will in most cases create a great design for your book regardless of what it's about. I'm continuously impressed by this text-to-image AI model.

I've seen many people experiment with designing book and album covers in Midjourney, and I have no doubt that this practice will become even more popular when the team behind the AI model releases a tool for editing text.
