Local tour manager for country stars dies
Keith Anderson was the man behind the scenes who made sure Brooks & Dunn and Rascal Flatts shows went off smoothly.
Anderson, a tour manager for those famous country bands, died Sunday of natural causes. The Center Township native was 48.
Remembered for his ever-present smile and colorful backstage stories, Anderson began his career in the mid-1980s as a carpenter on a John Cougar Mellencamp tour. Anderson later worked on the road crews for superstar acts Aerosmith, Van Halen, Tina Turner and Bon Jovi.
He tried settling down, working as a stagehand at Star Lake Amphitheatre in Burgettstown, but, missing the road, he jumped at the chance in 1993 to become a crew member for a fledgling country act, Brooks & Dunn. He stayed for the length of that duo’s record-setting career, elevated to the position of stage manager, a job he described as being like the quarterback of a traveling show.
“The sense of accomplishment you get is amazing,” Anderson said backstage at Brooks & Dunn’s 2006 Star Lake show. “Me and a small group of guys are the first ones off the bus at 7:30 in the morning and the last ones to get on the bus at 1 in the morning.”
The website roadie.net, a social networking site for concert tour professionals, has posted a tribute to Anderson in which colleagues remembered their fallen brother.
“He was a hard worker and a great friend,” posted Paul Serio, who worked with Anderson the last few years on Trans-Siberian Orchestra tours.
“Gregarious is a great word to describe Keith,” said Center friend Keith Lorich. “And fun-loving. There’s nobody who didn’t like Keith.”
Anderson served on stage crews at Center Area High School, from which he graduated in 1981. He completed training at the Community College of Beaver County to become an air traffic controller but on a whim moved to California, building hot tubs before a friend got him a job on the Mellencamp tour.
Lorich, owner of the former Maxim D’s bar in Center, said Anderson always visited him when back in town, sharing tales from the road.
Stories like the time Tina Turner baby-sat his kids, or when Whoopi Goldberg hit on him backstage.

5 things to know about Keith Anderson, the country singer and songwriter headlining Friday night's Downtown @ Sundown
Keith Anderson – the country music singer and songwriter behind "I'll Bring The Music," "I Still Miss You," and "Sunday Morning in America" – headlines Downtown @ Sundown on Friday night at Downtown Commons.
Anderson will perform at 8 p.m. Tennessee Pluckers, a local country and southern rock band (Kyle Clements, Logan Moore and Wes Page), opens the show at 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
Here are five things to know about Anderson.
Jock of the Year
For years, Anderson appeared on a different path than music. Growing up in Miami, Oklahoma, he starred in numerous sports. He earned all-state football honors and placed second in a Mr. Oklahoma bodybuilding competition.
In college, Anderson joined the Oklahoma State baseball team. A shoulder injury ended his pursuit of the big leagues.
Moving music off the backburner
After graduating with honors from OSU, Anderson worked for an engineering firm in Dallas, Texas. He lasted a year and a half before his growing passion for music led him to resigning and focusing on music. His brother, Brian, was his first guitar teacher. To support his passion project, Anderson took gigs as a landscaper and personal trainer.
Writing his way to success
Anderson's first hit as a songwriter occurred in 2001: Garth Brooks and George Jones recorded "Beer Run (B Double E R-U-N)", a song Anderson co-wrote. The next year, Anderson performed a multiple events, including opening for Montgomery Gentry. This effort led to a recording deal with Arista Nashville.
In front the mic
His debut CD, "Three Chord Country and American Rock & Roll," was certified gold and garnered two Top 10 hits ("Pickin' Wildflowers" and "Every Time I Hear Your Name"). Two other songs ("XXL" and "Podunk") enjoyed Top 30 success. In 2005, Billboard and Radio & Records named Anderson country music’s No. 1 New Male Artist and the top new solo country artist of the year.
Anderson’s sophomore CD garnered the biggest hit of his career with, "I Still Miss You," which peaked at No. 2 on the charts and Top 25 hit, "Sunday Morning In America."
In 2014, Anderson released a full-length album ("I'll Bring the Music") on his website. The following year, he released a six-song EP with the same title on iTunes and Amazon.
Doing it his way
Anderson has appeared on NBC’s Today, Inside Edition, Access Hollywood, the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, Grand Ole Opry Live, CMT 100 Greatest Duets and CMT’s Unsung Stories. He has performed on the Great American Country-televised concert special, Montgomery Gentry: Free to Rock, and starred in his own GAC concert event, Three Chord Country.
Anderson also appeared as a possible love interest for Paula Abdul on A Dr. Phil Primetime Special: Love Smart, which aired Valentine’s Day 2006 on CBS.
