Among these, only 25 temples have survived the course of time, spread over six square kilometres.

The History of Khajuraho Group of Temples

Built in the mediaeval century by the Chandela Dynasty, the UNESCO site of 'Khajuraho Group of Monuments' is famous for its Nagara-Style architecture and graceful sculptures of nayikas (Hindu Mythological female protagonists) and deities. The splendour of the intricate statues is one of the reasons that makes it a popular site to visit among tourists. Built between 950-1050 AD by the Chandela Dynasty, these temples represent various forms of meditation, spiritual teachings and relationships through stimulating art. The temples are famous for their craftsmanship that consist of splendid demonstrations of fine sculptures and exceptional architectural skill, making them one of the most stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.

The Western group of temples

The Western group is very close to the archaeological museum and it includes the temples of Lakshmana, Matangeshwara, Varaha, Kandariya Mahadev, Chitragupta, Parvati, Vishwanatha and Nandi. This group of temples has approximately 870 marvellous sculptures engraved on the interior and exterior walls. Just after entering the Western group, the plaque on the right gives a brief introduction to the history of the Khajuraho. The main attraction of this place is a Shivling and the beautiful floral carving in the Sanctum of the temple. The three outer sections of the walls depict the sculptures of gods, goddesses and Hindu mythological creatures.

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple

Jagdambi Temple

Jagdambi is another name for Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva. On a platform inside the sanctum of the temple, a sculpture of Lord Vishnu is beautifully carved. There are also a few sculptures of sura-sundaris (celestial beauty) which are particularly appealing.

Chitragupta Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun. There is also a sculpture of eleven-headed and eight-armed Lord Vishnu in the south of the temple. The sculptures of the divine couple deities Brahma-Brahmani, Shiva- Parvati, Bhairava-Bhairavi, and Lakshmi-Narayana have special artistic features.

This museum has some amazing sculptures and artefacts which are well displayed with their names and prospective age. An 11th - 12th-century statue of Sambhava Nath is placed in the Jain gallery which is situated on the left of the museum. A sculpture of Varaha with six heads and a dancing Ganesh are the exquisite statues to see in the museum. The Southern Group of Temples

The flying celestials on the uppermost Shikhara tower are the most impressive features of this temple. An amazing artistic skill can be observed in the carved jewellery of female figures of the temple. It is considered that the temple was built between 1100-1150

Chaturbhuja Temple

This temple is the only temple in Khajuraho that does not have a single erotic sculpture. At the entrance of the temple, the sculpture of Ganga and Jamuna is beautifully carved. Khajuraho City - Temple of Khajuraho

The 9th to 12th century temples of khajuraho is the evidences of the architectural geniuses during the times of Chandela dynasty. Situated in Madhya Pradesh, India, Khajuraho oozes with passion, eroticism, dance and music and other finesses of creative arts depicted in sculpture and images of the temples. The 85 temples were built in North Indian ‘Nagara’ style of architecture, though only 20 of them have survived the rough weather conditions over long years of time. The two richer distinctive groups of temples are the Western and Eastern group of temples. Temple town of Khajuraho is much different from any other temple city of India. It is not about religion and worshipping and deities.

The temples of Khajuraho are instead famous for the eroticism etched on its walls in the form of sculptures. An amalgamation of science and art of architecture, these 10th-11th century temples have a very interesting legend behind them that connects them to the origin of Chandela dynasty. It is said that in a fit of passion and lust, the Moon God seduced and ravaged a beautiful Brahmin girls known as Hemvati, resulting in the birth of Chandravarman (the founder of the Chandela dynasty). Later, Chandravarman had a dream where his mother requested him to make a temple, which would reveal all aspects of the treasure of passion and erotic fantasy to the world.

  • Description

The temples at Khajuraho were built during the Chandella dynasty, which reached its apogee between 950 and 1050. Only about 20 temples remain; they fall into three distinct groups and belong to two different religions – Hinduism and Jainism. They strike a perfect balance between architecture and sculpture. The Temple of Kandariya is decorated with a profusion of sculptures that are among the greatest masterpieces of Indian art.

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

The group of temples of Khajuraho testifies to the culmination of northern Indian temple art and architecture of the Chandella dynasty who ruled the region in the 10th and 11th centuries CE. Distributed over an area of 6 square km in a picturesque landscape, the 23 temples (including one partly excavated structure) that form the western, eastern, and southern clusters of the Khajuraho Group of Monuments are rare surviving examples that display the originality and high quality of Nagara-style temple architecture.

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments demonstrates in layout and physical form, the pinnacle of temple architectural development in northern India. Built in sandstone, each temple is elevated from its environs by a highly ornate terraced platform, or jagati, on which stands the body, or jangha, whose sanctum is topped by a tower, or shikhara, of a type unique to Nagara, where the verticality of the principal spire atop the sanctum is accentuated by a series of miniature spires flanking it, each symbolizing Mount Kailasa, the abode of the Gods.

The plan of the temples shows the spatial hierarchy of axially aligned interconnected spaces. The temples are entered through an ornate entrance porch (ardhamandapa), which leads to the main hall (mandapa), through which one accesses the vestibule (antarala) before reaching the sanctum (garbhagriha). The main halls of the temples were often accompanied by lateral transepts with projecting windows as well as a circumambulatory path around the sanctum. Larger temples had an additional pair of transepts and were accompanied by subsidiary shrines on the four corners of its jagati.

The temples of Khajuraho are known for the harmonious integration of sculptures with their architecture. All surfaces are profusely carved with anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic motifs depicting sacred and secular themes. Sculptures depicting acts of worship, clan and minor deities, and couples in union, all reflect the sacred belief system. Other themes mirror social life through depictions of domestic scenes, teachers and disciples, dancers and musicians, and amorous couples. The composition and finesse achieved by the master craftsmen give the stone surfaces of the Khajuraho temples a rare vibrancy and sensitivity to the warmth of human emotions.

Criterion (i): The complex of Khajuraho represents a unique artistic creation, as much for its highly original architecture as for the high-quality sculpted décor made up of a mythological repertory of numerous scenes of amusements that includes scenes susceptible to various interpretations, sacred or profane.

Criterion (iii): The temples of Khajuraho bear an exceptional testimony to the Chandella culture, which flourished in central India before the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate at the beginning of the 13th century CE.

Khajuraho Group of Monuments includes all the elements necessary to express its Outstanding Universal Value, including 23 temples that together demonstrate the originality and high quality attained in northern Indian Nagara-style temple architecture. The property is of adequate size to ensure the complete representation of the features and processes that convey the property’s significance, and does not suffer from adverse effects of development and/or neglect.

To safeguard the temples within their landscape setting, the western, eastern, and southern clusters are each fenced, thus delineating the protected limits. This curbs the spill-over of settlements that once comprised a part of the Chandella Empire. Identified potential threats to the integrity of the property include the nearby Khajuraho Airport, in the form of possible vibrations, increased volume of dust particles, etc.

Authenticity

The property is fully authentic in terms of its location and setting, forms and designs, and materials and substance. Its historic location has not changed. The forms, designs, and materials authentically illustrate the elements of the mature form of northern Indian temple architecture, including a combination of saptaratha plan topped by a form of shikhara unique to the Nagara style. Set in a picturesque landscape, these temples show the celebration of Chandella culture and power.

Protection and management requirements

Khajuraho Group of Monuments is owned by the Government of India and managed by the Archaeological Survey of India through the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act (1958) and its Rules (1959), amendment (1992), and Amendment and Validation Act (2010). The AMASR Acts also delineate prohibited and regulated areas extending 100 m and 200 m respectively from the designated monument. The land abutting the monuments is managed jointly by the Revenue official (i.e., District Collector, State government of Madhya Pradesh) and the Archaeological Survey of India, with the latter responsible for final approvals. In addition to the aforementioned protective designations, the rural landscape is managed by the Nagar panchayat (town-level governance) through the Madhya Pradesh Bhumi Vikas Rules (1984), which can regulate and protect heritage sites. Clause 17 of Section 49 of the Madhya Pradesh Panchayati Rajya Adhiniyam Act (1993) includes a provision for the preservation and maintenance of monuments. The Archaeological Survey of India reviews and strategizes the allocation of resources in consonance with the identified needs. Issues such as interventions, training, research, and outreach are determined annually on the basis of site inspections and assessments. These actions form an integral part of the operational management mechanism, augmented with experts as needed.

Sustaining the Outstanding Universal Value of the property over time will require continuing to protect and control the area immediately surrounding the property and monitoring the situation at the nearby airport to identify and eliminate any negative impacts on the value, integrity or authenticity of the property.

Complete guide to visiting Khajuraho: karma sutra temples + tigers

Thinking about adding Khajuraho to your India itinerary? This small town in central India has a lot to offer between the Khajuraho group of temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Panna National Park, full of tigers and other wildlife, as well as other smaller attractions.

This guide has everything you need to know to plan a visit to Khajuraho including how to get there, places to stay and the best Khajuraho activities to do while you’re there.

I visited Abhaneri as part of a 2 week India trip that also included  Varanasi , Abhaneri ,  Orchha  and the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur and Agra).

If you’re wondering where Khajuraho is, the town is in the state of Madhya Pradesh about 300km south of Lucknow (8 hours’ drive) and 450km southeast of Agra (9-10 hours’ drive).

Visiting Khajuraho temples

The temple complex is the main thing to do in Khajuraho and deservedly so as some of these temples are over a thousand years old and still covered in incredibly ornate carvings.

Those carvings are what’s made these temples extra famous because some of them depict scenes from the karma sutra including tantric sex. Don’t go showing up to Khajuraho expecting to see lots of sex scenes though, the explicit carvings are only a very small proportion of the temple decorations. There are far more carvings of more normal things like animals and plants and the karma sutra ones can be hard to spot.

The temples were built between the 11 th  and 13 th  centuries but when the town was abandoned, they were taken over by jungle and not rediscovered until fairly recently. While there were originally about 85 temples, only around 20 have survived.

There are two parts to the temple complex, the Western and Eastern groups of temples. The western group is larger and more numerous so if you only have time for one, those are the ones to see.

You’ll want at least 2 hours minimum to explore the temple complex. We kept our visit short because the weather was super hot and humid and there is minimal shade but if you bought big hats or sun umbrellas this wouldn’t be an issue.

Khajuraho Temple Entry Fees

You do need to pay a small entry fee for admission into the Khajuraho temple complex. It’s best to buy your tickets from the office onsite. While some websites do offer online bookings, these aren’t reliable. The cost for foreigners is 250 rs per person.

More Things To Do In Khajuraho

Spot wildlife at panna national park.

The next biggest Khajuraho attraction is the panna national park or panna tiger reserve. The park is over 500km2 and is home to not just tigers but leopards, wolves, hyenas and vultures. There are also lots of interesting plants, birds and reptiles if that’s your thing.

Tiger sightings are far from guaranteed, unfortunately it’s more common not to see one, but if you can visit on more than one day and arrive in the early morning or evening then you’ll have the best chance.

Even if you don’t spot any tigers or notable wildlife, there are two beautiful waterfalls in the ark which are worth a visit.

It’s compulsory to have a guide in the park, not a surprise given the dangerous animals wandering around, and it’s located 40km from Khajuraho town so I would definitely recommend booking a day tour (see best options below) to kill two birds with one stone.

The entry fee system is complex because there are er person and per vehicle charges but expect to pay between 800 and 3000 rs depending on the size of your group.

Read more about wildlife spotting in this India safari guide .

How Do You Get To Khajuraho?

While Khajuraho is fairly remote, it’s not at all inaccessible. In fact, you’ll find several options for getting to Khajuraho whether you want to do it under your own steam or have transport arranged for you.

Getting to Khajuraho by Train

Indian Railways are ubiquitous and it’s always the cheapest way to get around the country. You can take trains from Khajuraho Junction all over the country, including to Delhi via Agra.

Khajuraho Junction is not within walking distance from either the temples or any of the accommodations so you will need to hire a taxi or rickshaw to cover the last mile. This is typically fairly cheap if you barter.

Getting to Khajuraho By Plane

Flying into Khajuraho Airport is the quickest most direct way to get to Khajuraho, although far from the cheapest. If you’re short on time you can catch a domestic flight into Khajuraho from major cities and be in and out within the day.

Note: Khajuraho Airport is not currently operational, check for updates here

Getting to Khajuraho on a Day Tour

One of the easiest ways to get to Khajuraho and have all your sightseeing admin organised for you is to book a day tour. There is a decent range of Khajuraho tours available on Viator and all of them include hotel/train station pick-up and drop-off so you don’t have to stress about transport at all.

Best Khajuraho Tours

The best Khajuraho temples tour is UNESCO’s Western Temples at Khajuraho – A Walking Tour . It’s one of the few temple tours that actually includes entrance fees and focuses in depth on the history of the monuments.

The best tiger spotting tour from Khajuraho is the Panna Tiger Reserve Tour from Khajuraho which includes admission fees to Panna National Park and options for morning or afternoon departures.

The best combo tour is the Khajuraho Day Tour: Jungle Safari at Panna National Park and Western and Eastern Temple . This is great value for money including national park and temple admission. It’s an early start but you get to make the most of it with sunrise in the jungle.

Where to stay near Khajuraho

There is a surprisingly good range of accommodation near Khajuraho and the Khajuraho temples. In addition to the smaller homestays and family-run hotels common in India, there is a selection of international chain hotels providing a reliable experience (guaranteed hot showers shouldn’t be taken for granted in India!).

Here are my recommendations for places to stay in Khajuraho for every price range:

Best Luxury accommodation in Khajuraho – Radisson Jass Hotel Khajuraho

If you want the full western hotel experience while visiting Khajuraho then the Radisson Hotel is the best option for you. It’s a beautiful property, deserving of its 5 stars.

Best Mid-range accommodation in Khajuraho – Ramada Khajuraho

The Ramada might be the cheaper of the international hotels in Khajuraho but it doesn’t lack at all in amenities. The hotel has a pool, gym and even a small running track. Breakfast is included with most rooms.

Best Budget accommodation in Khajuraho – Hotel Khajuraho Inn

The Inn is on the nicer end of Indian hotels but still at budget prices, you can easily score a room for only $30 a night. Rooms are spacious and a cheap breakfast is available which is helpful given the lack of supermarkets and high prices in local restaurants.

Frequently asked questions about visiting Khajuraho

When is the best time to visit khajuraho.

While the Khajuraho temples are spectacular at any time of year, to really enjoy your time here you’re going to want to try to hit the sweet spot between Indian summer and monsoon season.

The best time of year to visit Khajuraho is between October and December as temperatures are cool enough to be outside without drowning in sweat. Even then, it’s extremely hot in this part of central India so you’ll want to pack hats, sunscreen and maybe a sun umbrella.

How long do you need to see Khajuraho?

If you are only coming to see the temples, then you can easily spend just a day in Khajuraho or do an overnight trip to avoid long travel times.

However, if you’re interested in visiting the nearby national parks for some wildlife spotting then I would recommend spending 2-3 days in Khajuraho so you get more than one opportunity to spot an elusive tiger.

In Short: Exploring Khajuraho

Khajuraho is the kind of place you don’t hear a lot about outside of India but that definitely doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit. Khajuraho is easy to get to by train or on a day tour and between the karma sutra temples and the tigers, it’s a must-do on any central India holiday.

Happy travelling!

About Khajuraho

Khajuraho is a very small town located in the Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh. But centuries ago, it was the capital of the major Rajput kingdom of the region – Chandela Dynasty . And they ruled in the 10th – 12th century. So, that is when they constructed the world famous temples of Khajuraho , which are a UNESCO world heritage now and popular all over the world as the “Erotic Temple Complex”.

Coming soon : Main Temples to visit in Khajuraho

Where to stay on your trip to Khajuraho

The Khajuraho main road that one takes on a trip to Khajuraho from NH39 to enter the city has a lot of hotels and resorts on either side. Actually, you can browse and book one here . After all, the advantage of residing on this road is that the temples are very close by. Actually we stayed at The Clarks Khajuraho . The hotel was neat and clean, with big premises, in campus parking and good food. And it was only 5 minutes drive to the western temples complex of Khajuraho from this hotel. Also, it was just 6-7km from the NH. So, overall, we could save time both ways on our trip to Khajuraho, traveling to and from Khajuraho as well as visiting the temples. Even the area right near the Western Temple Complex has a lot of stay options.

Can I do a day trip to Khajuraho

Khajuraho is well connected from most of the major cities of MP and also cities in UP. Definitely it is possible to do a day trip to Khajuraho, visiting the temple complexes and returning by the evening. But, from our own experience, I will highly recommend staying overnight. Because it gives one chance to visit the temples towards the evening and early morning when it is not very hot. And also not very crowded. We visited the main complex – the western Group of Temples the next day morning, after staying overnight. And it was really very pleasant to visit the complex early in the morning. Since, the cool, pleasant weather supported a lot. And we energetically visited all the temples, comfortably covering the grounds between them.

khajuraho city tourism

Also, driving and then a lot of walking between the temples will be tiring in my opinion. However, if you are really constrained by time, yes, it is possible to do a day trip to the temples of Khajuraho. But mostly it will be a very long and tiring day.

How to reach Khajuraho

Khajuraho is well connected with the rest of India through both roadway and railways. In fact, on our trip to Khajuraho, we came to Khajuraho from Bandhavgarh after doing a tiger safari in Bandhavgarh . However, one can easily reach here from Agra, Delhi, Gwalior, Bhopal or other parts of India via road. And the NH39 , which will connect Khajuraho to most of these other towns and cities, is being converted in a very nice 6 lane national highway at the time of this writing. And looking at the pace of work that we observed on the roads, in a few months, it will be fully ready. So, this will drastically reduce the travel time between Khajuraho and other towns. Although Khajuraho also has an airport, but there are hardly any commercial planes. So, road and rail are the primary means to reach Khajuraho. However, one can always fly into Gwalior, which has a very commercialised airport with many flights operating from all over India. From Gwalior, it will be a 5 hours road trip to Khajuraho.

General tips on doing a trip to Khajuraho

  • The Western Group of Temples, which is the main temple complex in Khajuraho opens up for public as early as 6:00am and is open till 6:00pm (or sunset, whichever happens earlier).
  • Prefer visiting the Western Group of Temples during your trip to Khajuraho in the early morning hours as the crowd is least and the climate is pleasant even in summers
  • There is a ticket of INR 40/- per head for Indian citizen to enter the western Temple complex
  • There are government designated guides available at the entry of Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho in case you want to hire one. Audio guides are also available.
  • For visiting the Southern and Eastern Group of Temples in Khajuraho, you can either hire a guide or rent a tuk-tuk (autorickshaw) which will take you to the different temples through the lanes of the village.
  • Wear comfortable cotton cloths and comfortable shoes or slippers to walk. When visiting the temple complexes, you will need to often leave your shoes at the stairs. So slip-ons really help.
  • October – February will be the best time to visit the Temple Complexes of Khajuraho as the weather is otherwise too hot.
  • You can carry water bottle inside the main temple complex but carrying food is not allowed. If you have something with you, you can leave it at the entry gate and collect later.
  • Some temples like the Chausath Yogini Temple are located far from the others, so, do designate ample time to visit these. It is one of the oldest temples of Khajuraho. Check our upcoming writeup to know more about the temples of Khajuraho that you shouldn’t miss visiting –

An idle itinerary for a trip to Khajuraho Temple Complexes

Day1 : arrival in khajuraho, visiting eastern & southern temple complexes.

On your trip to Khajuraho, target to arrive in Khajuraho by max noon. Check-in into your hotel. Have lunch. We arrived in Khajuraho by 2:00pm. And after a swift check-in, we had our lunch. After getting refreshed, by 4:00pm, we were ready to go out and explore the temples of Khajuraho.

Honestly, we didn’t know so much about the Group of Temples and in what order to visit them. As we were driving towards the western complex, a guide stopped us. And suggested us to visit the Eastern and Southern Group of Temples today instead. We did the same. And by the time we were done visiting the major temples of the Eastern Temple Complex and Southern Group of Temples in Khajuraho , it was almost 6:00pm. The guide also gave us information on when the Western Temple complex opens the next day in the morning. And then we departed and came back to our rooms. We had an early dinner.

Vamana Temple

Today, some of the major temples that we visited included – Parsvanatha Temple, Brahma Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple, Vamana Temple and Duladeo Temple .

Breakfast was included in our hotel room plan, which means we had already pre paid for it. So, we had two choices for the next day. (1) to wake up early in the morning and visit the temple complexes as early as 6:00am in the morning, come back by 8:30am and then have breakfast and checkout for the next destination – Orchha. Or, (2) to wake up little late, have breakfast early at 7:00am and then start for the temple complex by 8:30am, come back to hotel and check out by 11:30am.

The second option was delaying our checkout and thus our road to the next destination. So, we decided to opt for the first one. You can do the same.

Day2 : Visiting Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho and departure

Morning, 5:30am, we woke up, got fresh and started for the Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho by 6:00am. We parked our vehicle in the parking area right in front of main entrance. Although, you have to access it by turning left twice from the road in front of the temple complex.

We bought our tickets and entered the Western Group of Temple Complex . There was hardly anyone at this time inside the temple. We saw a beautiful sunrise and witnessed the first rays of the sun entering the temples in the complex and fall on the idols. This is the reason, we will highly recommend visiting these temples early in the morning.

khajuraho city tourism

We visited all the temples in the complex including the Lakshmana Temple, Vishvanath Temple, Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Parvati Temple, Jagdambi Temple and Chitragupta Temple .

You can comfortably finish visiting the Western Group of Temples Complex at Khajuraho in 2.5 – 3 hrs. We finished visiting all the temples by 8:15am. And we were back to our hotel by 8:30am. Then, we headed straight for breakfast. After finishing breakfast, we comfortably checked out by 10:00 am and started for the next destination – Orchha.

PS: We followed the above itinerary on our road trip to Madhya Pradesh from Bangalore . Wherein, we reached Khajuraho after doing a tiger safari in Bandhavgarh National Park . And later proceeded to the ancient historical city Orchha.

ATLANTA (AP) — A water main break has interrupted water service and led to low water pressure in the city’s downtown and other parts of Georgia’s capital.

Crews on Friday were “working aggressively” to make emergency repairs to the 32-inch water main, the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said in a statement.

“Water service has been temporarily interrupted, affecting residents, businesses, and hydrants in the area,” the agency said.

The Department of Watershed Management issued a boil water advisory for a large swath of metro Atlanta and asked the public to restrict water usage to allow the pressure in the system to rebuild, WXIA-TV reported. During a boil water advisory, water should be boiled for one minute past a rolling boil. The advisory is in effect until the Georgia Environmental Protection Division clears the Department of Watershed Management to lift it following sampling and testing.

Some Atlanta and Fulton County offices closed because of the issue, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Tourist attractions were also affected, including the Georgia Aquarium, which ended operations early, the newspaper reported.

Zoo Atlanta closed early, at 1 p.m. Friday, because of the water pressure issues, the zoo announced. The zoo, southeast of the downtown area, “has contingency plans in place to ensure that the animals have access to water,” it said in a statement.

Thanks in part to its national parks, universities and major metros, the United States boasts the strongest travel and tourism economy in the world right now, according to a newly released report from the World Economic Forum.

Overall, however, European countries dominate the top 10 with six of them making the cut—including France, which will be an especially popular destination this summer as Paris hosts the 2024 Summer Olympics .

The World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) takes into account a number of factors across several categories for its rankings.

The report’s metrics focus on countries’ tourism sectors—including factors like airports, on-the-ground transportation and ports, natural and cultural resources, safety and security, price competitiveness and destinations’ openness to tourism.

“The index measures the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable and resilient development of the [travel and tourism] sector, which in turn contributes to the development of a country,” the report says.

A category that helped the United States achieve the top rank include “non-leisure resources,” which the U.S. ranked first for and is defined as having a presence of leading universities, global cities and major corporations.

With 429 national parks sites and more than 12,000 miles of coastline, the United States also came in third for natural resources, trailing behind Australia and Brazil. The country ranks No. 6 for tourist services and infrastructure.

Areas where the States fall short include price competitiveness (No. 115) and safety and security (No. 77). Malaysia ranked first for price competitiveness and Singapore took the top spot for safety and security.

How Is The Post-Pandemic Tourism Rebound?

While the report points out that the tourism industry continues to be on the up and up coming out of the pandemic, many countries—including the United States—are experiencing growing pains.

Of the 119 TTDI-ranked economies, 71 increased their scores between the 2019 and 2024 editions, however the average index score is just 0.7% above pre-pandemic levels.

Countries in the Middle East had the strongest rebounds, with international tourist arrivals 20% above the 2019 level. The Americas, Europe and Africa had rates around 90%.

Sustainability of travel demand is also a consideration, a timely issue as a growing number of European cities are imposing or raising tourism taxes to help curb overtourism —or at least help offset its impacts.

Some challenges highlighted in the report include tourism labor shortages, flight routes not keeping up with demand and inflation.

Venice bans loudspeakers and limits tour groups in latest mass tourism crackdown

Seeing an estimated 25 million visitors every year, Venice has brought in a series of measures tackling overcrowding and mass tourism. From today, loudspeakers have been banned and tour groups have been limited in the Italian city.

Venice has introduced new rules tackling mass tourism, with loudspeakers now banned and tour groups limited to just 25 people.

The Italian canal city, which welcomes an estimated 25 million people a year, announced the measures in December in a bid to tackle mass tourism.

Coming into effect from Saturday, the new rules say tour groups are limited to 25 people in Venice as well as the islands of Burano, Murano, and Torcello

Loudspeakers have also been banned as they "generate confusion and disturbances".

Elisabetta Pesce, the official with responsibility for the city's security, said last year the latest rules are "aimed at improving the management of groups organised in the historic centre".

It marks the latest crackdown on mass tourism for Venice. In April, the city rolled out a €5 (£4) fee for day trips throughout the summer in a bid to thin the crowds.

Simone Venturini, Venice's top tourism official, said at the time: "We need to find a new balance between the tourists and residents.

"We need to safeguard the spaces of the residents, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day-trippers on some particular days."

However, some residents protested the measure, saying more attention needs to be paid to boosting the local population and services they need.

Venice passed a milestone last year when the number of tourist beds exceeded the number of official residents for the first time, who now number fewer than 50,000 in the historic centre.

In August, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommended Venice be added to its list of World Heritage sites in Danger over growing concerns of overcrowding and unsustainability.

HONOLULU – Representatives of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association, City and County of Honolulu, and an array of public safety professionals and visitor industry partners made a special announcement during a press conference at the Hawai‘i Convention Center today commemorating Honolulu for being recognized by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection as the “Safest City to Travel to in the World” in 2024. In attendance were: ● Mufi Hannemann, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority Board Chair and Hawaiʻi Lodging & Tourism Association President and CEO ● Mayor Rick Blangiardi, City and County of Honolulu ● Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan, Honolulu Police Department ● Prosecutor Steve Alm, City and County of Honolulu ● Senator Sharon Moriwaki, Hawai‘i State Senate ● Rick Egged, Waikīkī Improvement Association President ● Paul Kosasa, Waikīkī Business Improvement District Board Chair ● Jessica Lani Rich, Visitor Aloha Society of Hawai‘i President & CEO ● Jay Talwar, Hawai‘i Visitors and Convention Bureau Senior Vice President of Marketing, Chief Marketing Officer Honolulu secured the top spot in ranked cities to visit for safety in 2024, after being ranked 12th by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection in 2023. Honolulu also came in first for its health measures, women/LGBTQ+/BIPOC safety, and safety from violent crime; second pertaining to terrorism; and third for transportation (roads). The group emphasized the collaborative efforts to ensure Honolulu, the island of O‘ahu and the rest of the Hawaiian Islands remain a safe and secure place for residents and travelers. Hannemann hailed the success of recent programs, public safety workforce, and Hawai‘i’s diverse visitor industry professionals for their “continued commitment to safety and wellbeing of our people.” Hannemann continued, “There is nothing more important than ensuring our residents have safe communities for them to live, work and play, which in turn reinforces travelers’ connections with Hawai‘i as a safe and secure destination they will return to.” According to the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism’s First Quarter 2024 Visitor Satisfaction and Activity Survey results being issued this week, more than 90 percent of visitors from all markets surveyed rated the Hawaiian Islands as “excellent” or “above average” when it comes to being a safe and secure destination. Hannemann added, “It’s a competitive world and we will not rest on our laurels. We must ensure that people who come here continue to have a safe place to visit.” “Our number one priority is public safety for all of us who live here, which thus extends to those who visit,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “It also shows that the aloha spirit permeates through our people, and travelers come away realizing all this and more. It reaffirms Hawai‘i as a global brand. And when you hear the word Honolulu — no matter where you are — travelers’ attitudes shift as there’s a deep respect for the people of this island.” “As an organization, we are working with our community partners, elected officials and businesses  here to keep the City and County of Honolulu safe for everyone, from partnering on programs such as Waikĩkī Safe and Sound or Weed and Seed in neighborhoods including Chinatown,” said Chief Logan. “We can’t do it alone as we work every single day for Honolulu to be the safest place in the world.” “This recognition is a testament to everyone here about making Honolulu as safe as possible, as well as every other community on O‘ahu,” said Prosecutor Alm. “From the community organizations and neighborhood boards to each individual, it’s about collaboration and working together.” Kosasa shared, “We are thrilled to celebrate Honolulu’s recognition as the ‘Safest City to Visit in the World’ by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s State of Travel Insurance Safest Destinations. This accolade highlights the incredible collaboration among all our partners.” Kosasa added, “For the past 24 years, WBID has been steadfast in our mission to maintain Waikīkī as a world class ‘Clean and Safe’ destination. We invest over $4 million annually in safety initiatives, including our Aloha Ambassador program, homelessness and street medicine outreach, and our strong partnerships with law enforcement agencies. This year, we are witnessing remarkable results in crime reduction and a significant improvement in ‘the eye test,’ making Waikīkī safer and more welcoming than ever before. These efforts reflect the success of public-private partnerships and our ongoing commitment to ensuring a secure and vibrant environment for both our residents and visitors.” Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s State of Travel Insurance Safest Destinations report is the longest-running and most-trusted research project tracking U.S. travelers’ attitudes toward travel safety and travel insurance.
