Comfortable walking shoes and wet landing shoes such as reef walkers, Tevas or old sneakers are recommended. The below packing checklist will make packing for your expedition very simple.

What to Bring On Your Kimberley Cruise

kimberley cruise packing list

30 Oct What to Bring On Your Kimberley Cruise

While you’re on a cruise, you’re limited in your ability to pop on down to a shop if you’ve run out of something. Getting away from it all is why cruises are so popular, of course, but it does mean that you need to make sure your suitcase has everything in it you’ll need through the journey.

What to wear

The first thing most people pack is clothes, and you’ll want to be prepared for every occasion.

We recommend that you bring four or five changes of comfortable, casual clothes. You won’t need much more than that, as there are usually laundry facilities on board that you can take advantage of. With no dress code to worry about, there’s no need to pack anything formal, though you might want a nice pair of shoes for the evenings, and something comfortable to walk in.

You also won’t need to pack anything warm. The Kimberly is semi-tropical environment, with ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ seasons, though the temperature remains warm throughout. On the rare instance where some cooler weather does come through, there’ll be jumpers and jackets for sale on board, so you don’t need to fill your suitcase with heavy clothing items.

If you’re keen on going swimming (and there are some wonderful swimming locations that you’ll visit on your trip), then bring a couple of pairs of swimwear too. Finally, make sure you bring a good hat and sunglasses – you’ll be spending a lot of time in the sun!

Prepare to go off-board

As part of your trip, there will be plenty of opportunities to step off-board for scenic excursions, so come prepared for this.

Firstly, you’ll need a small backpack to carry with you. In that make sure you have a full water bottle or two (which can be purchased on board if you forget to bring your own), as well as sunscreen and insect repellent, and a small towel.

Other than that, just make sure you’ve got all the equipment you need to really enjoy these excursions! You’ll surely want to bring your camera along; don’t forget the batteries and spare memory sticks/cards. Many of our trips also have abundant wildlife and Aboriginal rock art in difficult-to-view places. Consider bringing a good pair of binoculars to really take in the stunning natural environment of the area.

What entertainment should you bring with you?

There will be plenty to get up to while you’re on your cruise, but you’ll also have plenty of downtime to simply relax. Make sure you bring along a book because nothing beats kicking back with a good book on a cruise.

Be aware that there won’t be reception for your phone for the most part either. Think of this as a chance to escape our internet-dominated lives – though you are usually able to purchase WiFi access at an additional rate if you need to.

Your cruise will also be the perfect opportunity to get to know new people. A deck of cards or a board game is a nice way to have fun in the evening after a hard day of… relaxing.

Don’t forget your medication and specialised toiletries!

Bring along anything you think you might need in the way of vitamins, medicine, motion sickness preventatives, moisturiser, chapstick and personal hygiene items.

We’ll help you plan the perfect Kimberley cruise at the best price guaranteed Help Me Find My Cruise

The Ultra-Luxury Kimberley Cruise Guide

The Kimberleys, Australia

Planning a trip to the Kimberley? Here is our guide to the top luxury cruise lines in the Kimberley, a bucket list destination.

Where is the Kimberley?

The Kimberley is located in the far north-western region of Western Australia. It is one of the largest wilderness landscapes in the world. Thousands of visitors are drawn to this fascinating region for its incredible natural wonders. Hot, arid landscapes bask in glorious sunsets where thundering waterfalls contrast the brilliant red cliffs and soaring plains.

Horizontal Falls, Kimberley, Australia

Natural phenomena like Horizontal Falls and rivers brimming with crocodiles, pristine beaches and spectacular reefs lie within this remote and indigenous landscape.

Due to its remote location and extreme climate, one of the best ways to appreciate the Kimberley is by cruising.

When to travel to the Kimberley?

The best time to visit the Kimberley is mid-May to August, where the daytime temperature sits at around 28-30°C and evenings are a balmy 19°C. This is just outside the wet season. However, some cruise operators run waterfall cruises from mid-March to mid-April where visitors can appreciate nature in all its glory with thundering waterfalls and spectacular light storms in a more humid climate.

Choosing the right ship for your Kimberley Cruise

Expedition /smaller cruise vessels can get into areas where larger vessels cannot access allowing for a more intimate and close-up experience. These vessels come with multiple smaller zodiac / adventure boats to propel you right into the heart of these untouched gems of the area. Some of these vessels have helicopters on board too, providing an even more exhilarating adventure and birds eye view.

It’s important to consider the type of Kimberley adventure you are looking for. Some of the larger vessels offer pools and day spas with multiple restaurant choices whereas the smaller vessels like True North, whilst still very luxurious, have limited onboard facilities and focus mainly on experiences in the region off the main cruise vessel.

Iconic highlights of the Kimberley region

  • King George Falls – one of the most photographed icons of the region. These 260-foot all twin cascades are phenomenal against the burnt red cliffs. Vessels like True North can get right up close to the foot of the falls.
  • Horizontal Falls and Talbot Bay – The Horizontal Falls are fast moving tidal currents that flow through two narrow gorges in Talbot Bay, located in the Buccaneer Archipelago. Most of the cruises will take guests on fast jet boat rides through the currents.
  • Mitchell Falls – a breathtaking waterfall at its height at the end of the wet season. Fly over the falls via helicopter or take the hike in – that is well-worth the journey.
  • Baccaneer Archipelago – the Kimberley is home to one of the highest concentrations of islands in the world. Some harbour ancient rock art dating back to Aboriginal times like Bigge Island.
  • The red rocks of Cape Leveque contrast the turquoise sea, the northernmost point of Dampier Peninsula.
  • Montgomery Reef – Australia’s largest inshore reef that rises from the ocean with an incredible sound as the tides wash over it.
  • Kuri Bay – Nestled within the untamed Kimberley wilderness in Western Australia, Kuri Bay is a remote coastal haven which boasts pristine beaches, secluded coves, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life.
  • Vansittart Bay – Vansittart Bay beckons adventurers seeking rugged beauty. Marvel at cascading waterfalls and discover the haunting wreckage of WWII aircraft.
  • Some activities available such as barramundi fishing trips, crocodile spotting cruises, whales off the coast of Broome, and camel rides on Cable Beach in Broome

How to get to the kimberley.

Most of the cruises we featured start and finish in Broome or Wyndham (via Kununurra), however Darwin is also another port for some itineraries.

What to pack when visiting the Kimberley

A diverse landscape that is dry and arid with lush rainforest and stunning waterfalls requires careful packing to ensure you have the right clothing and gear for different activities and weather conditions. Light-weight cotton clothing ideally with long sleeves for sun protection. Pack layers to accommodate the dry heat and slightly cooler evenings.

Good walking shoes as well as wet shoes for shore excursions and reef landings are a must. A hat, sunglasses, swimmers and sunscreen are also essentials for the suitcase. A spray jacket, water bottle and lip balm with SPF is also a good idea. Depending on where you are planning to visit, gaiters will protect your ankles and legs if you are planning to do the Kunmunya Hike. Many cruise vessels have a smart casual dress code for evening dinners on board, so pop in a few outfits for dinner.

What to Wear in the Kimberley

Home > Destinations > Kimberley Cruises > What to Wear in the Kimberley

The Kimberley Coast offers warm climates, and lots of sun. It is important to bring comfortable, light weight clothing for the warm days, as well as some warm gear for the evenings when weather can turn cool.

Tops:  Loose-fitting, light-coloured, long-sleeved, cotton or sport-style synthetic shirts protect your skin from the sun whilst helping to keep you cool during landings. Short-sleeved shirts are also ideal on board.

Bottoms: Loose-fitting, light-coloured trousers that cover the ankles are ideal for walking through the bush. Shorts are ideal for beach landings.

Jumper: Some warmer clothes are ideal for cool evenings.

Spray Jacket: For excursions in the Explorer. Sea or weather conditions (choppy water or cool mornings/evenings) make it necessary to wear a waterproof spray jacket.

Walking shoes: A sturdy pair of reef shoes are essential for shore visits. Make sure they are well worn before you travel to avoid blisters and sore feet.

Wet landing shoes: A pair of reef shoes, velcro sandals or old walking shoes that you are prepared to throw away are all ideal. Thongs are not ideal.

Sunhat & Sunglasses: A wide-brimmed hat or cap is essential for sun protection. It is a good idea to pack a spare incase one gets lost or blows away. Sunglasses are essential to protect your eyes from the UV rays.

Sunscreen and chap stick: We recommend waterproof, 30+ sunscreen.

Gaiters: If you are planning to do the Kunmunya Hike in the Kimberley, gaiters are ideal to protect your legs from the scrub.

Swimsuit: We offer a number of swimming opportunities in refreshing waterholes, and there is also a spa onboard.

Water bottle: Aurora Expeditions will provide you with a water bottle on board. Remember to fill it up and take it with you on each landing.

Kimberley Cruises FAQ

Kimberley cruises f.a.q..

Looking for answers about a Kimberley cruise? Here’s the answers to the most frequently asked questions we receive.

It’s always a great day when you’re lucky enough to be cruising Australia’s Kimberley Coast! The first thing to note is that cruises don’t operate during the wet season between October and early March.

Travelling in March / April / May is the optimum time to experience the Kimberley’s big waterfalls (particularly King George & Mitchell) at their absolute best whilst June and July promise perfect daily temperatures and low humidity.  If you’re travelling from late July through September you will also encounter the world’s largest annual humpback whale migration along with the wildflower season. Read more about the Kimberley’s different seasons.

With over a dozen ships cruising the Kimberley coast, choosing the right ship for your needs can be confusing. Mid-size expedition ships (if we can call them that – they accommodate between just 72 and 120 travellers) offer spacious accommodations, larger expedition teams and all the latest onboard amenities (bells and whistles), but generally don’t have as much flexibility as smaller vessels (12 – 36 travellers) which also tend to offer a more active experience and also the option for fishing.

The best way to find out which ship is right for you is to speak to one of Kimberley Cruise Specialists experts – they will take the time to listen to your expectations for the trip, discuss your fitness levels and help you make a decision.

You don’t need to be super-fit to enjoy a Kimberley cruise, in fact as long as you’re able to walk moderate distances over uneven terrain you’ll be able to complete most of the excursions on offer. Some ships tend to offer a more active experience, which might also include scrambling over boulders to a secret swimming spot for example.

Importantly though, all ships require guests to be able to move around the ship unassisted (including up and down stairs to reach evacuation points) and to be able to care for themselves during the voyage. Guests relying on walking frames and wheelchairs might not be suited to all ships – it’s best to speak to one of our experts about your level of mobility if you have concerns.

The thought of a cooling dip after a long day of Kimberley exploration sounds wonderful, until you think about some of the creatures that are lurking just beneath the surface! Due to the number of saltwater crocodiles that call the Kimberley Coast home it’s generally not considered a good idea to swim in the bays and rivers. Luckily though, there are some freshwater pools and billabongs along the coast and the crew will try to allow time for a cooling dip on a few occasions during each expedition.

Importantly, always take the advice of your crew when considering a swim – they know where it is safe and where it isn’t.

If you’re keen to land a ‘barra’ you should keep in mind that not all Kimberley cruise ships offer a fishing programme. Typically the smaller vessels (up to 36 passengers) are licensed for fishing and offer it as a regular activity during their voyages. On these ships the chef will also gladly prepare and cook up your catch of the day.

On the slightly larger ships (more than 36 passengers) fishing isn’t really a key activity due to the amount of time it would take for everyone to have a turn. Some of these vessels might offer one or two opportunities to fish using a hand reel, but this will generally be on a ‘catch and release’ basis.

If you’re a single traveller looking for a Kimberley cruise there are some great options that take the sting out of the dreaded single supplement.

Firstly, several ships offer a ‘single match up’ service whereby they will try and find another single cruiser of the same gender to share your cabin. That’s a great way to avoid paying any single supplement, if you’re willing to share with a relative stranger. Looking on the brightside, by the end of your trip you may have made a new friend for life.

If the idea of sharing isn’t your cup of tea, all Kimberley ships allow sole use of cabins, typically though the sole use surcharge is between 50% and 100% of the cruise fare. There are a couple of exceptions though, in particular Eco Abrolhos and Reef Prince have a number of cabins available with surcharges of 20% or less, which is great value.

We strongly recommend that all guests obtain a suitable travel insurance policy to protect against any loss (whether it be due to cancellation or curtailment). Importantly, we suggest you ensure that your preferred policy includes a provision for remote area evacuation. Remote area evacuation is important as the ambulance service will generally not be able to reach you in remote locations along the Kimberley coast, meaning that private helicopters may be engaged to evacuate you in the event of a medical emergency. Costs associated with an evacuation of this nature can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Not all domestic policies include this provision, so it is important to double check.

We are a registered agent for nib Insurance, and their Australian Waters policy does include remote area evacuation. We also pass on a discount on nib premiums when purchased in conjunction with your Kimberley cruises.

During your Kimberley cruise you will be heading into remote areas where there is not any mobile telephone reception at all. This means that while you are cruising your friends and colleagues at home will not be able to contact you through your normal number.

Of course all Kimberley cruise ships have a satellite telephone meaning that you can always be contacted in an emergency, and several ships now also offer the ability to purchase access to WiFi internet. Please note however that the nature of satellite technology means the onboard WiFi is not really suited for video calls (Skype and the like) or downloading large files, however it is perfectly fine for checking and sending emails.

About to head off on your Kimberley cruise and worried that you’ve forgotten to pack something important? Check out our suggested packing list:

  • Long, lightweight pants for hikes and walks
  • Rain jacket, lightweight

  • Swim shirt / rashie for sun protection

  • A jumper (pullover), sweatshirt, jacket, or light wrap that you can layer
  • Sunhat with brim
  • Bathing suit and / or board shorts (for swimming opportunities)
  • Personal hygiene products and any prescription medications
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent – most ships provide this on board, but if you have brand preferences or sensitivities you may wish to bring your own
  • Good walking / hiking shoes, rubber-soled
  • Sunglasses for protection from sea glare. A backup pair is also a good idea
  • A backup pair of prescription glasses if appropriate – imagine if your only pair of glasses broke early in the trip!
  • Rubber sandals or Tevas / wet sandals called ‘river walkers’ or ‘aqua soles’ – thick-soled mesh socks for wet landings on the beach
  • Sandals or thongs for on board use – note that some ships such as the True North have a ‘barefoot’ policy on board so these may not be required
  • Binoculars (essential for bird watching)
  • Small torch
  • Backpack (preferably waterproof) suitable for carrying your photographic equipment
  • Refillable water bottle or canteen
  • Plenty of spare memory cards for your camera – you will be taking plenty of photos!

Also keep in mind that lightweight fabrics dry quickly. So if a quick hand wash is required in your cabin your laundry will dry quicker.

Additional information.

  • First Day – Flights to arrive the day prior to departure.
  • Last Day – Flights are recommended to depart late in the day or the next day.

Welcome to Broome, a former pearling port and an ideal stepping stone to your Kimberley Coast adventure. After your arrival on the stunning Indian Ocean coast, we will transfer you to your luxury explorer ship. Get to know your Expedition Team and Cruise Director at a welcome briefing before dinner.

Stay: 10 Nights, Le Laperouse or Le Jacques Cartier

The Lacepede Islands are Western Australia’s most important breeding habitat for Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and have been named by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area. Join your expedition team for a guided Zodiac tour to view the prolific wildlife. Later, your ship charts a course into the stunning Buccaneer Archipelago. Made up of more than 800 islands, and filled with stunning scenery and an incredible array of wildlife.

Explore Talbot Bay and Cyclone Creek. Accompanied by your Expedition Team Leader, you’ll weave nimbly past the dramatic folds of rock formations, keeping a look out for local wildlife.

Talbot Bay, known for its massive 12-metre tides that create the unique Horizontal Falls. Subject to tidal conditions, board a Zodiac with your Expedition Team to view this natural phenomenon.

At Freshwater Cove take a guided hike to visit an ancient Wandjina rock art site. The unique figures depicted are ritually repainted each year, but scientific estimates date the originals as far back as 5,000 years. Later, depart with your expedition team to discover Montgomery Reef by Zodiac. The reef ‘rises’ out of the ocean as tidal waters cascade into surrounding channels.

You are transported to Prince Frederick Harbour today, which is home to towering red cliffs and tangled mangroves. With its extreme tides and pristine ecosystems, the harbour is rich in wildlife including mudskippers and saltwater crocodiles. Keen birdwatchers should keep a careful eye out for kingfishers, egrets, herons and white-bellied sea eagles. Stepping out from the sleek comfort of your luxury expedition ship to your trusty Zodiac, it’s hard to believe you’re at Australia’s final frontier, this time to explore the Hunter River and Naturalist Island. As your day of discovery draws to a close, you might choose to set out on a thrilling helicopter flight to see the Mitchell Falls in all its splendour from above (flight at own expense).

You continue to cruise north along the Kimberley Coast towards your final destination, Darwin, bound for another encounter with ancient art. Approximately six kilometres from the mainland, Bigge Island is ripe for discovery today. It’s well known for its Indigenous rock art, created by the Wunambal people, and you’ll explore a network of caves throughout the island. Here, discover paintings that display fascinating examples of first-contact art and Wandjina figures.

Explore this maze of islands, inlets and peninsulas, believed to have been named by explorer Lieutenant Phillip Parker King after novelist Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels. Most significant here are extraordinary examples of Wandjina and Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) rock art, estimated to have been created between 5,000 and 13,000 years ago. They can be seen in caves close to the water’s edge, mainly painted on rock overhangs.

This morning join your Expedition Team on an intriguing discovery. Walk across salt flats to view the wreckage of a US Air Force DC3 which crash-landed near Vansittart Bay during World War II. Later, visit Jar Island and discover the island’s outstanding rock art gallery. During your exploration here, you’ll see more examples of Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) paintings, dating back more than 20,000 years.

Wake this morning as your ship cruises into Koolama Bay. Hear how this harbour was renamed following the Japanese bombing of the MV Koolama in 1942. Next, it’s onto the King George River. Join your Expedition Team and jump aboard a Zodiac to meander through the river’s gorge system, passing mangrove-fringed coves and sheer red cliffs. Anticipation builds as your Zodiac approaches King George Falls, which plunge 80 metres over a soaring sandstone cliff. Edge closer to this epic cascade and learn how it turns to a raging torrent during the monsoonal wet season.

Relax and ease into a full day at sea, enjoying the endless horizon. Perhaps take a swim in the onboard pool, pamper yourself in the wellness area, or head below deck to your luxury ship’s underwater observation area for a stunning window into marine life below the ocean’s surface.

Arriving into Darwin this morning means it’s time to say goodbye to your ship and to be transferred to the airport.

  • Itinerary and inclusions are subject to change
  • Cruising itineraries are subject to change due to tidal conditions and may be modified on board your ship
  • High Zodiac Activity – This expedition cruise uses Zodiacs for most excursions
  • Travel insurance is mandatory on all cruises
  • Prices includes airport transfers, port charges and park fees
  • Prices are for cruise only – flights not included

Disruption to Itinerary Arrangements Itineraries are intended as a guide only and are subject to alteration without notice. Alterations may be necessary for various reasons including, without limitation, road or weather conditions, strikes or other reasons beyond reasonable control. If conditions render any routes unsafe for navigation, the operator reserves the right to provide alternative services including but not limited to accommodation. Under normal conditions, itineraries will operate as far as possible as detailed in this publication. However, sometimes for reasons beyond our control, it may be necessary to make alterations to your itinerary. For example, it may be necessary to operate part of the itinerary by coach and alternative sightseeing may be included. Operators will not be liable for any direct or indirect costs that you incur as a result of any event or other factor beyond our control which necessitates a change in your itinerary. Operators cannot guarantee exact arrival and departure times for carriers and operators used will not be liable for failure to make connections with any other services or attractions beyond its control.

Noise and Vibration Reasonable steps are taken to minimise noise and vibration on cruise vessels. You acknowledge and accept that some noise and vibration may be experienced on vessels and that operator is not liable to you for any such noise and vibration.

Passengers Needing Special Assistance We welcomes passengers with disabilities or special needs however, please note the following: 1. Any disability or medical condition requiring special attention must be reported to the operator at the time of booking including all important information relating to your health, mobility and fitness which may affect your partial or total participation in the cruise or tour. This information is also crucial to allow the operator to ensure the tour you have chosen is suitable and meets your needs. Any changes to health, mobility and fitness must also be reported to the operator as soon as possible and prior to departure. Where possible the operator will make reasonable adjustments to the tour to accommodate your special needs however, it cannot do so if the adjustment required would be unreasonable in all of the circumstances, including if such adjustments would affect your safety and/or the safety and/or enjoyment of other passengers. 2. If you require special assistance or care (such as pushing a wheelchair, assistance with dressing or assistance with walking or hearing emergency alarms unaided), you must travel with a companion capable of providing the required assistance or care. Please be aware that the operator does not provide personal assistance. The operator is unable to assist any passenger with walking, dining, boarding or disembarking any transportation vehicles (including river and ocean cruise ships and trains). To safely participate in embarkation and disembarkation you must be able to do so without the need for special assistance. You must also be able to do so without unreasonably impacting other passengers’ safety and/or enjoyment. 3. While the operator will make reasonable efforts to accommodate the special needs of disabled passengers, it is not responsible for any denial of services by any third party entities it has travel arrangements with, such as carriers, hotels, trains, restaurants or other independent suppliers, or for any additional associated expenses charges by those parties. 4. Please note coaches and minibuses are not equipped with wheelchair ramps. Most river and ocean ships have elevators, however not all the operator ships have elevators. Many ships require the use of stairs to go between decks. Further, side by side docking may require passengers to climb and descent stairs to cross over vessels to disembark and embark at times. The operator ships often sail through remote areas that do not have convenient docking facilities. In such circumstances it will be necessary for passengers to negotiate temporary gangplanks and uneven surfaces. If the crew decide that it is not safe for a passenger to negotiate such operations they may require passengers to stay on board. Cabin doors and restrooms may not be wide enough to allow access by standard wheelchairs. Wheelchairs and walkers cannot be carried on coaches, due to space limitations. For safety reasons, passengers in wheelchairs cannot be carried on ramps in ports where the river or ocean cruise ship is at anchor. The operator is unable to provide individual assistance to any passenger for walking, dining, disembarking or embarking cruise ships and/or coaches or other transportation vehicles or other personal needs.

Her Packing List

Packing Lists

Ultimate female packing list for an outback camping tour in the kimberley.

' src=

The following is a guest post on how to pack for outback camping in the Kimberley by Jo Castro . See all packing list posts here.

The Kimberley region is situated in the northwest of Australia’s largest and remotest state, Western Australia. It’s an enormous area and to give you an idea of size, it’s about 1.7 times bigger than the UK .

You can expect wide open expanses, along with massive gorges, soaring cliffs, palm trees and spectacular waterfalls, not to mention the 1 million acre cattle stations and never ending dry, burnt sienna vistas that are often covered with spiky, spinifex grass.

And yes, some of the earth and the gravel roads really are red; a deep, rusty red that gets in your clothes and stains your t-shirts!

Many of the gorges and scenic hotspots are accessed from the legendary Gibb River Road , which was originally built for road trains transporting cattle from isolated stations to the ports of Derby and Wyndham. It has quite a history if you have a chance to read about the pioneering farming families of The Kimberley.

These days though it’s become a magnet for adventure travelers, especially in the dry winter season from about May to September, when the river crossings are passable, the creek levels have dropped, and the waterfalls are flowing after the rains.

Overland Guided Tour or 4 WD Alone?

You can go it alone, but you need to be extremely prepared and you’ll need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to cope with the 600kms or so of dusty roads which often have deep furrowed corrugations and only the occasional service station. Or you can book a tour with an Outback tour company which requires less planning and will often cost about the same, depending on which company you choose.

I travelled with Adventure Wild on a 12 day camping adventure along the Gibb River Road and the Great Northern Highway in a return loop from Broome to Kununurra and enjoyed not only the social aspect of travelling with others, but also the fact that we had an experienced driver and a knowledgeable guide on board to show us the sights.

packing list for outback camping

Bag: We were told to keep our packing to under 15kg in a squidgy stuff bag 65cm long x 35cm wide x 30cm high rather than a hard sided suitcase because all luggage is thrown on top of the bus under a tarpaulin and space is limited. There were washing facilities at some of the camp sites and in Kununurra, so clothes didn’t have to stay clean for the whole 12 days.

Day Pack: Also take a small day pack with you, so that you can keep your day time essentials handy under your seat, and also take it with you on hikes into the gorges.

Walking Footwear: You’ll need comfortable walking boots or sturdy walking shoes, and a pair of all terrain sandals, as you’ll be doing quite a bit of walking. Some of the terrain is rocky and the rocks in the gorges can be slippery. All terrain sandals can also be used for walking over uneven rocky surfaces and on hikes where you will get your feet wet. I took my old tried and tested hiking boots and a pair of lightweight all terrain sandals.

Camp Footwear: Thongs (flip flops for North Americans) or Crocs or Sandals because you won’t want to walk around barefoot due to the possibility of snakes and spiders.

Socks: Two thick pairs for boots or two thin pairs if you are taking walking shoes.

Hat: One that gives good cover – preferably that has flaps to cover your ears and neck. The ozone level in Australia really is thin.

Long Trousers: One or two pairs of lightweight ‘longs’ suitable for hiking if it’s cold and suitable for wearing around the camp fire at night. If they are soft (trackies) you may even end up sleeping in them too.

Shorts: Two or three pairs, preferably non crease and easy dry.

T-Shirts: Three for daytime and a long sleeved, loose fitting shirt as a sun cover up that you can also use in the evenings (Remember there are mossies in the Kimberley)

A warm jacket or polo fleece: Because it does get cold at night.

Beanie and possibly gloves: Yes, as hot as it gets in the day (very hot) the temperature can really drop at night to very cold.

Underwear : Comfortable underwear to last about 6 days (you can wash along the way) and perhaps thermals for night time.

Nightie or Pyjamas, and bed socks.

Bathers or board-shorts: Boardies can also be used for walking, and are a good option if you wear them with say a bikini top to swim across a river or swim in a gorge, and then go for a hike, as they drip dry quickly.

A sarong : It’s a great cover-up when you need to go to the ablution block, and great for walking around camp in the heat of the day. It can be used as a towel, a sheet, a light cover, a pillow, a picnic blanket or a shawl at nighttime.

Toiletries, Health & Safety

Toiletries: Eco-toiletries sensitive to the environment are the best, and don’t forget tampons and sanitary pads as required. Razor. Hair brush (there will not be any hair driers). Scrunchies if you have long hair. Lip stick, blusher and mascara (if you must). (Read through the low-key traveler’s beauty kit for advice)

Sunscreen : You will be able to purchase more along the way, but definitely take enough to last you for about 5 days.

Insect repellent: It’s essential. (One reader recommended definitely a DEET spray as vector-borne insect diseases are in the area.)

Anti-histamine tablets or creams: Recommended.

Basic first aid items : Bandaids, headache  tablets, prescription medicine, spectacles, anti bacterial cream for small scratches or blisters.

Moisturiser for girls: Remember it’s a dry heat in The Kimberley.

Tissues and Wet Wipes : Toilet paper is generally available.

Easi-dry camping towel : Pack a small easi-dry camping towel and keep it in your daypack (great for quick dry offs after river swims, and great to quickly dry any drops of water off your camera or phone).

A towel for showering.

Camera and charger: There will be amazing waterfalls, gorges and golden red sunsets – so make sure your camera has enough memory too.

Head Lamp Torch and batteries: It’s pitch black in the Kimberley region at night.

Mobile Phone and charger: Reception is rarely available but on the occasions it is, the tour guide will tell you, or take you to the best spot for cell phone coverage.

iPad if you have one: You’ll want to record your trip right?

Adventure Wild had a coach fitted with a 12v/240v inverter system to keep cameras and laptops/iPads charged throughout the trip – so don’t forget your chargers .

Fly Net: One that drops over your hat. Sometimes the flys in the Outback can be pesky – think humungous cattle stations.

Water bottle or camelback: To carry when walking

Swags or tents with swags will be provided, so you won’t need sheets or bedding. Adventure Wild supply you with a Sleeping Bag, Pillow & Pillowcase.

Take a good attitude too: On an overland trip like this you’ll need to always be prepared for the unexpected, so you need to be able to go with the flow and be open to adventure.

Great blog. Very handy. I fly to Broome tomorrow. I am going on a 9 day overland from Broome to Darwin. Lots of hiking. SLeeping in swags. I feel the cold (although i am scottish i get colder than most folk!) and was wondering how cold it will get at night. I am just about to go buy my own sleeping back. I have one already but only has a comfort rating of +7 and even then I have been cold in it before. I have good runners but I suppose I should buy hikers. So excited Thanks for your help

Hi Kimberly I don’t think you should be cold at all. We travelled through the Kimberley and I found the nights to be slightly cool, but definitely not cold. I always warm up quite quickly in a swag, so I wouldn’t buy an extra sleeping bag if I were you. Also, I just wear sneakers/tennis shoes when I go on bushwalks (including the Kimberley and Karijini). Personally I find hiking boots to be a bit of overkill if you are going to be walking along marked trails. Have a great trip!

The ultimate packing list for a family cruise so you won't leave anything behind

T his image is forever planted in my brain: my husband walking through the airport wearing a giant car seat backpack on his back and another backpack on his front while rolling two carry-on suitcases, each with smaller bags on top. I was pushing a stroller (with a toddler in it) in one hand and another carry-on suitcase in the other while wearing a diaper bag. We were headed on a family Disney cruise, and in a courageous attempt not to overpack or lose luggage, we carried everything onto the plane.

Packing for a family cruise can be intimidating. You're going on a boat – with your kids – with limited access to items if you run out. While most modern cruise ships come stocked with some version of what you might need, be it diapers or a morning sickness remedy, choices are limited. Having the right supplies on hand can give you peace of mind and allow you to actually relax on the cruise. (Well, that and the kids' club!) Cruises are an incredible way to see different sites, partake in family-friendly activities, and take advantage of an all-inclusive vacation .

Based on my experience as a travel writer and mom of two, I've thought of everything you may need to pack so that you don't have to. Read on for the ultimate packing guide for bringing young kids on a family cruise.

What to pack for a family cruise

Packing for a cruise is different from preparing for a typical family trip . You're staying in a smaller space (usually under 200 square feet), and you can't just Amazon Prime something to your hotel in a pinch.

Sleep and travel gear

If your child isn't old enough to walk everywhere, are you doing a travel stroller , a baby carrier , or both? If you pick a stroller, make sure it folds up to save space in your room. Perhaps your school-age child needs a scooter to ride through the airport. Think this all through. And remember: Cruises have a lot of floors, so don't bring anything you can get in and out of elevators or up and down stairs.

Most ships have play yards , cribs, and beds with bumpers available to rent . Look into your options so you'll have a safe sleep space for your little one. (Most cruises have travel restrictions for babies , so if yours is still in a bassinet, they likely won't be old enough to go.)

As with other trips, bring a lovey, sound machine , or any other portable item that may help your child to sleep in a new space.

Essential documents

Make an itinerary listing out flight details, car transfers or rentals, important addresses (such as where to board), and your packing list. You should also bring printed cruise tickets, travel insurance information, health insurance cards, other medical forms, and emergency contact information for all family members. Keep all printed documents together in a folder stored in your carry-on bag.

Some cruises (such as Disney) have apps where you can store a lot of this information digitally. That said, if you lose your phone or don't have cell service, having printed backups can be a lifesaver.

If you're cruising internationally , make sure everyone has passports. (Yes, babies need passports !)

Clothing and accessories

One of the best parts of going on a cruise is the dining options. Does your ship offer casual and formal spaces? Research this in advance to ensure you have the proper attire for all scenarios.

If you’re planning to participate in a fancy dinner or activity, your entire family may need to step it up in evening wear. We had a blast dressing our toddler up in princess dresses for dinner. Pro tip: Cruises can get chilly at night thanks to the ocean breeze and air conditioning, so bring layers, be it a light sweater or denim jacket.

The ships are also often quite big, so pack comfortable dress shoes for your entire family. The last thing you want is to carry your tired child home from dinner in heels that dig into your feet or have your 3-year-old complain that they can't walk in a pair of sandals they haven't broken in yet.

During the day, dress skews more casual. You'll likely need pool and beachwear, so pack swimwear , sun hats, rash guards, sunglasses , and life jackets for beginner swimmers. In addition to sandals, water shoes may come in handy for rocky beaches or other outdoor excursions (such as exploring a local waterfall). Everyone needs sneakers.

My advice is to also bring some cozy loungewear. There's nothing like sitting watching the sunset in a soft sweatshirt and drawstring pants. Make sure your little one has these types of layers, too.

You should also pack the usual: pajamas, socks, underwear or diapers, tees and tanks, shorts, pants, etc. With kids, always bring enough for each day and then at least two extra of everything. For babies, you want two outfits per day, minimum. Laundry may be available, but doing it will take you away from other activities and can be expensive.

Toiletries and personal care

Sort of like heading to a remote island, a cruise has limited options when it comes to standard drugstore items. Sure, you can buy diapers and wipes, but don't expect to find the hypoallergenic kind. Prices may also be jacked up. Be methodical with what you pack.

If you have a kid in diapers , pack enough for every day plus at least two extra days in case of travel delays. I usually bring two to three packs of wipes – one for the room, one for the diaper bag – as well as a portable changing pad and diaper disposal bags. Some cruises offer diaper pails for the cabin (Disney did), but if not, you'll want a closed-up bag for soiled diapers. Remember to bring diaper rash cream as hot environments can be a breeding ground for flare-ups.

I'd personally save space by using the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body lotion offered on the cruise (if available). If someone in your family has sensitive skin, then bring a travel-size versions of these items, because you don't want to deal with rashes on vacation.

Save space by choosing items everyone can share such as mineral, fragrance-free sunscreen and a simple moisturizer . Aloe vera, deodorant, insect repellent , and powder for chafing are necessary for warm-weather trips. Bring travel-size products for anything else you need or decant favorite formulas in small bottles.

First aid supplies

There is typically an infirmary on a ship with healthcare professionals and medicine available, but you'll be happy to have some basics on hand.

Create a family first aid kit with items such as bandages, antibiotic ointment, infant and kid pain reliever , kids' Benadryl, a thermometer, bug spray, anti-itch cream, and any prescription medicine. It's always a good idea to include hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes to use around the ship.

If your child struggles with motion sickness , bring your own kids' Dramamine and sea bands for small wrists. We also got our child a prescription for kids' Zofran from her doctor, so talk with yours if you anticipate sea sickness to be an issue. We also always bring vomit bags in the diaper bag. (Insider advice: Request a cabin in the center of the ship closer to the water for a less rocky experience.)

Electronics, gadgets, and entertainment

Don't expect to get high-speed wifi in the middle of the ocean. Preload tablets and laptops with shows and movies. Add in kid-sized headphones and a tablet case they can easily grip. This is your friendly reminder to bring chargers for everything. A waterproof phone case may also be a savior during pool days.

There's tons of stimulation everywhere on a cruise – from toddler-friendly splash pads to live dinner shows. Still, pack some books, coloring supplies, and other low-key activities to do in the room during downtime, like when you're getting ready for dinner.

Cruise-specific items

There are ways families make cruises extra special for their group. Some decorate the door to their room with their kids' artwork. Parents also use lanyards to keep cruise cards handy around wrists or necks.

Since cell phone service can be spotty, some families choose to bring walkie-talkies to stay in touch when they're roaming around the ship separately.

Again, research your specific cruise for what you might need, especially based on the activities offered on and off-board. Will you be snorkeling? Will you want binoculars to see the stars? Keep in mind cruises provide a lot of gear – for instance, Disney offers free beach strollers at its private island, Castaway Cay – but if there's anything else you think would make your voyage more enjoyable, bring it.

Tips for packing for a family cruise

In addition to what to pack, how you pack can make the trip more organized. Some ideas to get you started:

Pack in carry-on luggage

Your cabin will have limited storage. Packing in carry-on bags means the actual suitcases won't take up precious space. Also, if the airline were to lose your luggage, it could really throw a wrench in your plans. Make difficult decisions, re-wear some items, and just pack what you need.

Pack bags in bags, and then stuff them with socks and underwear. Roll clothes to save space. You don't need as many shoes as you think – bring comfortable beach sandals, a dressy pair for dinners, and sneakers. You've got this.

Use packing cubes to stay organized

Make unpacking a breeze by keeping similar items together. Divide packing cubes by day clothes, pajamas, dressier looks, etc. Another excellent item to bring: wet bags for the trip home.

Utilize the car seat bag

If you're bringing a car seat with you (which I highly recommend for all car and plane transfers), store it in a big car seat backpack. Then, add any odd-shaped items in it, such as a pack of diapers or sand toys. This is my family's top hack for living a carry-on-only life: We use every inch of extra space.

Pack a beach bag for excursions

Don't forget to bring a lightweight tote for off-boat fun. I love the Standard Baggu tote , which rolls up to the size of a sock in your luggage but holds quite a lot. It's also super lightweight.

Bring snacks

Yes, cruises are loaded with tons of complimentary eats, but most of it is prepared food. If you want snacks for the room or on the go – such as puffs, cereal bars, and the like – BYO.

On the same note, don't forget a favorite sippy cup (to ward off dehydration), a beloved spoon or fork, and kid-friendly containers for bringing snacks around the ship and offsite.
