Let our Ladakh holiday packages transport you to this mesmerizing destination, where nature's grandeur unfolds in every corner.Pangong Lake, also known as Pangong Tso, lies calmly at a breathtaking elevation of 14,270 feet. Interestingly, the lake is 12 km long and marks itself between the laps of India and China. Rather, 60% of the portion is stretching in the neighboring nation and this excites every traveler to be here. The surreal clean blue waters are actually brackish or salty in nature and this feature doesn’t let any aquatic life survive in the same. Moreover, the temperature range between -30 to -10 degrees make even this salty lake freeze with thick ice sheets, which is quite opposite in case of salt ridden water bodies. This picturesque landscape location enhances its beauty with the arrival of migrating birds every year and attracts many travelers in search of adventure, photographs, bird-watching and chilling experience. Pangong has another unique and catchy feature; when it acts like a chameleon and changes its color from blue to green to even grey at times. The brackish water of Pangong attracts the migratory birds every year during winters in Ladakh.

Nubra Valley

One of the most beautiful parts of the moonscapes of Ladakh, Nubra Valley is a deep-cut gorge created by the combined effects of Shyok and Nubra (Siachen) rivers. A high altitude cold desert, Nubra Valley is actually an extension of the Tibetan Plateau (Qing-Zang Plateau) that starts in China and extends up to Ladakh. This valley in the plateau separates the Ladakh Range from the Karakoram Range. But more than anything, Nubra Valley is the most beautiful region in all of Ladakh. Home to wonders like the Diskit Monastery,Hunder Sand Dunes, Samstanling Gompa, Yarab Tso Lake, and the villages of Turtuk and Panamik.Located about 160 km from Leh, the capital of Ladakh, Nubra Valley is a great attraction to all those who come here. The gateway to the upper reaches of the country, especially Siachen, Nubra Valley has an oasis of a town in the heart, Diskit, making a great place to stop you and reflect at the beauty around. And while you are at it, take a short detour to the famous white sand dunes of Hunder. The shapes and forms that these dunes take during different times of the year mesmerize every visitor who comes here. To make it further interesting, there are the double-humped Bactrian Camels, offering rides through the dunes. And when it turns dusky, head to the Diskit Monastery and visit the towering statue of Maitreya Buddha which looks over the entire valley and blesses it for another day to come.Planning a Trip to Ladakh, Experience of Chadar Trek - The Frozen River Trek

Leh Ladakh FAQs – Preparing for Ladakh Trip

Dheeraj Sharma

Let us look at some of the most common questions asked on my blog about preparing for a Ladakh trip. I am starting this five-article series of Leh Ladakh FAQs to answer all your questions about planning a successful trip to Ladakh.

It will be easy for me to redirect you to the right question and its answer in these articles instead of repeating the same answers again and again in the comments section of various blog articles on this website.

Leh Ladakh FAQs - Preparing for Ladakh Trip

I will also keep updating this Leh Ladakh FAQ series with new questions in case I have missed answering any and also keep my answers fresh with updated information about preparing for a trip to Ladakh.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

This section should answer all your questions about preparing yourself for a trip to Leh Ladakh. Once, you go through these questions you will understand how to prepare for a Leh Ladakh trip.

Q1. What are the tips to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness?

Ladakh is a high altitude place in trans Himalayas, and when you make a trip to Ladakh, Acute Mountain Sickness ( AMS ) is always on the cards. The majority of people suffer from AMS symptoms knowingly or unknowingly, some mild and few sever. It is biology; one cannot defeat or trick it if you are not following the basics of acclimatization, that is to give time and allow your body to adapt to change in altitude.

Generally, people can go up to 8000 feet without much problems with mountain sickness. As you start to increase altitude, the barometric pressure starts to decrease, which reduces the Oxygen intake per breath. Hence, people start to suffer from AMS as the body does not adapt to the change in high altitude.

Some of the tips that you can follow to minimize the chances of getting hit with AMS are outlined below:

  • Increase the altitude gradually
  • Keep your body properly hydrated
  • AVOID overhydration
  • Avoid sleeping at high altitudes
  • Avoid overexertion
  • Avoid tobacco and smoking and alcohol and other depressant drugs
  • Keep your body warm
  • Eat lots of Carbohydrates
  • Avoid sleep during the day
  • Sleep in an upright position, if possible
  • Carry preventive medicines for AMS
  • Carry Small Oxygen Kit

The best cure is to acclimatize properly or descend. In case you feel the person is suffering badly, then ask him to walk in a straight line by placing toe to toe. If the person is not able to walk in a straight line, i.e., he is suffering from ataxia. IMMEDIATELY DESCEND!!

Q2. Can a person with asthma visit Ladakh?

People with Asthma issues are in general, OK to travel to Ladakh or other high altitude places because of purity in the air and less pollution. Asthma is mainly related to pollution and dust mites, which are a common allergen. These are not present at high altitude places.

So, it is believed that people with Asthma issues do just fine in Ladakh. You can read about it in the reference article Pre-existing Medical Conditions at High Altitude .

Having said that, I am not a doctor, so please do consult your doctor and do not take my advice as medical advice. It is a question that you MUST consult your doctor before traveling to high altitude region of Leh Ladakh.

Q3. Can a person with hypertension or high blood pressure visit Ladakh?

This one is tricky because a lot of variables go into controlling the blood pressure. In general, people with controlled blood pressure at low altitudes with medication or without it do fine at high altitude. Still, I highly recommend consultation from a doctor, and you should not ignore it.

Usually, there will be an increase in your blood pressure as you reach high altitudes because of the lack of oxygen that infuses stress and adrenaline in the body. The high blood pressure subsides over some time as you stay at high altitude, usually 1-2 weeks, when your body is acclimatized to rarified oxygen. However, by no means, you should alter any dosage of medication that you are already taking within consulting your doctor.

Hence, if you have hypertension or high blood pressure, then you MUST consult your doctor before making a call to travel to Leh Ladakh. You can read about it in the reference article Pre-existing Medical Conditions at High Altitude .

Again, having said all that, I am not a doctor, so please do consult your doctor and do not take my advice as medical advice. It is a question that you MUST consult your doctor before traveling to high altitude region of Leh Ladakh.

Q4. Can I take my 2-3-year-old kid to Leh Ladakh trip?

It depends on person to person to take the children of less than five years of age group because AMS does not matter concerning age or gender or any fitness level. It can happen to anyone of any age or sex or fitness, I shall say.

Personally speaking, I will not take a child of less than five-year-old to high altitude places like Leh Ladakh, and I will wait for them to get older. You MUST remember that no matter how much they sell, Leh Ladakh is not a family or leisure destination . It is an adventure travel destination and will always remain that way. Adventure comes with risk always, and I will prefer not to take any risk with such a young child or toddler.

The issue with small kids of any age group is that they tend to exert the body considering it the same kind of place they belong to, and this elevates the chances of getting struck with AMS.

Secondly, the children in such an age group of fewer than five years are not too expressive about their uneasy feelings. So it is the parents who need to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache, or nausea and is behaving properly.

With less than five-year-old child, I think he/she will also be NOT able to convey the uneasiness they are feeling. You have to be very vigilant, and if you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling, then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight.

If symptom increase then starts descending immediately. The same principle is applicable to any adult as well. And yes, do keep the body adequately hydrated always for everyone!!

PLEASE read the comprehensive topic that covers all the tips on Traveling to Leh Ladakh with Kids or Babies and it will give you a complete understanding of the details of it.

Q5. Can I take my 5-10-year-old kid to Leh Ladakh trip?

Secondly, the children in such an age group of more than five years become expressive about their uneasy feelings and do tell if they are having any issues. It is still the parent’s job to watch out and take care that the child is not suffering from uneasy feelings, headache, or nausea and is behaving properly.

If you notice any such feeling or he/she tells you about such a feeling, then please do not ascend anywhere, either descend to lower altitude or stay at the same place to watch things overnight.

Q6. Can I take my pet or dog on a trip to Leh Ladakh?

As the travel industry is booming in India, more and more hotels are becoming pet-friendly and welcome pets. Hotels in Ladakh even provide food for pets . You can otherwise choose the carry your frozen food. As you will do to yourself, do keep your pets adequately hydrated.

Do consult your veterinary doctor for any medicine for motion sickness or high altitude that he would like to prescribe. Finally, make sure you always carry your pet’s vaccination records with you on all your trips.

Q7. Can I take my old age parents on a trip to Leh Ladakh?

As we have discussed in the previous questions, acute mountain sickness does not matter concerning age, gender, or physical fitness. It can happen to anyone and of any age. So, yes, as much as you can go yourself to Ladakh, you can surely take your parents provided they are in healthy condition and can endure the fatigue of this long journey.

You should plan a relaxing and comfortable itinerary for your Ladakh trip when taking your elder parents. Travel from Srinagar – Leh Highway with night halts at Kargil and Alchi. Finally, after doing sightseeing in Ladakh, come back from Manali – Leh Highway.

Plan to hire a comfortable vehicle as a lot of distance needs to be covered; they must be comfortable on the journey. Make sure to keep everyone in the group always adequately hydrated.

If they are on medication or have any existing illness, make sure you consult your doctor only after the doctor’s approval travel to the high altitude places carrying proper medication.

Q8. Should I carry oxygen cans or cylinders on my Ladakh trip?

If possible for you, you may carry oxygen cylinders to Leh Ladakh trip which are medium to large size, that is big enough to last for several hours and that’s the whole point for carrying them.

Small oxygen cans do not provide much support as they do not last for a long time. They can mentally psych you up only. Hence, you need to carry medium to large-sized oxygen cylinders, which help to restore your dropped oxygen levels to safety. This trick buys you time only and is not a cure for AMS.

The charges of renting these oxygen cylinders may look a bit high if you are a budget traveler. However, it is somewhat like buying insurance for yourself, and the best return with any insurance is that you do not get to use it.

Some reasons why you should be carrying an oxygen cylinder on a Ladakh trip are:

  • Traveling with Kids or Elders to Leh – Ladakh
  • Traveling with People having Medical Conditions to Leh – Ladakh
  • Traveling with a Large Group to Leh – Ladakh
  • Having Rushed Travel Plan for Leh – Ladakh Trip
  • Flying Directly to Leh
  • Starting Leh Ladakh the trip from Manali – Leh Highway

For your Leh Ladakh trip, you should be able to rent the oxygen cylinders in Leh or from Delhi .

Wondering on how to prepare for Ladakh trip?

Q10. What clothes should I carry on a Leh Ladakh trip?

Carrying clothes on a Ladakh trip mainly depends upon the season in which you will be traveling. The winters may have altogether different requirements than summers while the shoulder season months of April to May and September to October may prove to be tricky ones.

The peak season months of late June, July, and August are considered to be pleasant where light woolens mostly do the job for you. In the winter months, when both Manali Leh Highway and Srinagar Leh Highway are closed due to heavy snow, then the conditions are extremely cold.

Hence, in such winter months, very heavy woolens are required to survive on a Leh Ladakh trip. The tricky windows of visiting Ladakh are from April to June and September to October.

The basic thing for making your Ladakh trip a successful one is that at any cost, you MUST KEEP yourself warm enough always with proper woolen clothing and always wear shoes all the time with woolens socks.

The second thing on clothing is that you must carry clothes that can be worn in layers as it helps you adjust to the fluctuating temperatures in the sun and shades, up there in Ladakh.

Yes, in the season start and season end months, when the sun is shining, then everything appears good, and suddenly you enter a shaded portion with the wind blowing, which is cold enough to have a jacket. So, take due care around it and avoid letting the cold flow inside the body in such cases as well.

Keeping these factors in mind, I will recommend carrying the following clothes for Ladakh trip:

  • 2-3 pairs of Inner thermal suits
  • 3-4 sets of heavy woolens
  • 1 heavy woolen jacket is always handy throughout the year
  • 3-4 pairs of woolen socks
  • 1 good insulated boots or trekking shoes in winters. Summers, any sports shoes should be fine.
  • Kids especially should wear caps or hats all the time when out there in the sun.

Especially, in the month of September and October, the UV rays are harshest and you must protect your skin using Hats / Caps and good high SPF sunscreen lotions.

  • Carry at least 1 Balaclava or monkey cap
  • Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the reflections from snow
  • An extra pair of shoes/gumboots in case people are on bikes and are expecting a lot of water crossings,
  • Hand gloves must-have in the months of October to June.
  • In the end, it is always nice to take some candies, chocolates, books, pens, pencils, crayons, etc. anything that you can distribute among the local children. Nothing but the smile on their face would be too much worth it.

Q11. Are there any ATMs in Ladakh?

There are 4-5 ATMs available in Leh town but you will not find any ATMs anywhere else in Ladakh. Sometimes, especially in offseason or winters , the ATMs may face difficulties and maybe nonoperational due to weather conditions and power issues.

Hence, make sure you carry sufficient cash with yourself to pay your bills and do not rely heavily on these ATMs.

Q12. How much cash should I carry on a Leh Ladakh trip?

There are few ATMs in Leh town, but you should not rely heavily on them and carry enough cash with you on your Ladakh trip. The total amount that you should carry depends upon if you have done your hotel bookings or the taxi bookings or you are planning to book everything after arrival in Leh.

When you travel in a group of 4-5 people, in general, you will end up spending somewhere between Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 for a complete Leh Ladakh trip. Of course, as discussed in this book, there are ways to make a budget Ladakh trip , but here I am giving a ballpark figure on how much cash you need to carry.

You can do the calculations based on the numbers that say a complete circuit of Ladakh trip from Srinagar to Ladakh to Manali covering all major tourist destinations will cost you a taxi of about Rs 60,000. Then you can consider Rs 900 – 1200 per person per day for food, stay, and miscellaneous expenses. Please note I am talking about a moderate budget trip here that has a decent level of comfort, neither too luxurious nor too basic.

Q13. Can I take my laptop to Ladakh?

Yes, you can surely carry your Laptop on the Ladakh trip. However, there are some considerations that you should take into account when taking electronic devices like Laptops to high altitude places in the Himalayas.

The new generation laptops have solid-state drives (SSD) in them, and hence, they will just do fine on a Ladakh trip. However, the laptops with old-style hard drives (HDD) may suffer a crash or data loss on an altitude of 10,000 feet and above.

To understand better, these old hard drives have a head that flies between the rotating disks/platters. When the air pressure is too low, then there is not enough lift for the flying head, so the head gets too close to the disk, and there is a risk of head crashes and data loss. The laptops with Solid State Drives (SSD) does not have this problem.

So, if you are carrying a laptop to Ladakh, try to follow the following tips for carrying a laptop to Leh Ladakh trip :

  • Carry Waterproof Bags / Pouches
  • Do Not Switch ON at Altitude above 10-11K
  • Keep them out in an environment before switching ON
  • Always Shutdown or Switch off Laptops
  • Protect them from Cold Conditions
  • Take care of your own belongings

Packing list for Leh-Ladakh Trip

Perfect Packing list for your Leh Ladakh Trip

A bike trip to Ladakh means tackling the treacherous terrains of the mighty Himalayas, riding through harsh weather and facilities which are way more scarce than any other hill station you have ever visited. This will be one of the most challenging trips of your life and you must be prepared for it.

Your packing checklist must be extensive as well as lean so that you not only carry all your essentials but also avoid straining yourself with deadweight on the trip. This is why having a precise idea of your packing list plays a crucial role while you are on such unpredictable roads.

With sparsely available amenities and facilities like ATM, Fuel Stations, Accommodation, eateries, mechanic, and phone connectivity, you got to have a solid backup plan. Riding on a bike to these rugged terrains requires packing-which is specific and should be according to the mode of transport.

However, even if you are not planning a Ladakh bike tour but want to know what are some of the essentials you got to carry on this trip, then this article is for you too. We have listed down a comprehensive guide on how your luggage should look like before you embark on this journey regardless of your mode of transport.

Packing list For Leh Ladakh Bike Tour

1. clothes to carry.

This has been a frequently asked question by most travelers because they don’t have a precise idea of the climate on this trip. Weather in Ladakh is very unpredictable with fluctuating temperatures throughout the day. So, having clothes which can sustain any weather is necessary in order to avoid getting sick while on the road.

Wearing clothes in layers will not only help you fight the cold but also keep your body warm at all times. For this, carry light woolen clothes that are not so tight and can be easily removed when the temperature rises. So, having layers of cloth will help you balance your body temperature when the weather fluctuates.

Also, carry normal clothing like cotton T-shirts and trousers or jeans. Pack a set of thermals, a water-wind-proof jacket, and some light woolens. Here is a detailed list of clothing we recommend:

  • Cotton T-Shirts
  • Jeans and Trousers
  • Woolen Socks and Gloves
  • Wind-Waterproof Jacket
  • 1 light jacket
  • 2 Pairs of thermal inners
  • Hats or Beanies
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Heavy woolen clothing (if traveling in winter)

2.  Basic Travel Kit

While traveling, you may not find things that are easily available at your home which can save you in a crisis. So, packing a complete travel kit can be a lifesaver on the road. You have to be prepared for every crisis you may face on the journey. Here is a list of some of the Basic Travel Kit you must carry on a Ladakh Bike Trip :

  • Route details printout
  • Woolen and Leather Gloves
  • Multiplug extension cords
  • Mufflers or balaclava
  • BackPack Or Carry bag
  • Nylon rope and bungee cords for bikers
  • Flashlight or Torch lights
  • Water bottle
  • Candles, Lighter, and Match Boxes
  • Swiss Knife
  • Safety Pins
  • Wrist Watch
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Books to read

These items will come in handy on your trip and save you from any problem on the journey. If you want to know more, then contact us at BackPackClan . You can join us on our bike trip to Ladakh this season. We will answer all your queries in detail and prepare you for the journey beforehand.

3. Toiletries

Ladakh is still on the verge of development and because of this, finding your daily essentials would be a tough job. Carrying all your toiletries and cosmetics for your daily use will come as a sigh of relief for you on the journey. So, purchase all your toiletries before leaving for the trip. Here is a list of toiletry you must carry on a Ladakh adventure tour

  • Moisturizers
  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Tissue rolls
  • Tooth Brush
  • Tooth Paste
  • Comb & Mirror
  • Toilet Soap
  • Shaving Kit

4. Food Supplies

Chocolates and Dry fruits like almonds, cashew, walnuts, raisins, etc are our most recommended eatables on this trip. These foods will give you instant energy and are also easy to carry. Also, some tea bags and coffee pouches will keep you active and energized on the road while riding.

If you cannot resist your hunger then cup noodles or Maggi can come to your rescue. However, you will easily find eateries along the road but they are scarce in number. So, it would be better if you can at least carry some food supply as you might get stranded in roadblocks. Fresh fruit juices or fresh fruits like apple, guava, grapes, and other locally available fruits can also be carried.

Water is your savior because at such a high altitude, keeping yourself hydrated is a big issue. As you don’t want to get sick for no reason right? So, make sure you carry extra water bottles at all times.

Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs will be a big bummer at such a high altitude. So, don’t even try this stunt on your trip.  Some of our riders ignored it on our last bike trip to Ladakh and they had to suffer from acute mountain sickness. We don’t want you to go through that.

5. Medical Kit:

Ladakh’s high altitude and extreme weather can get you sick if your body is not prepared for it. Without proper precautions, acute mountain sickness is a common condition that can lead to severe headaches, vomiting, nausea, and weakness. Also, accidents can happen at any time so having a backup plan can save your life.

Carrying a first-aid kit which will help in healing any injuries or sickness on the way. Also, consult your doctor and tell him to prescribe you medicines for mountain sickness as well. You can also carry glucose as it will keep you hydrated and will give you instant energy on your ride.

Making proper medical arrangements would be of your top crisis because medical facilities won’t be available everywhere for you and it can take a long time to reach you. So, be prepared.

6. Documents

Ladakh is a pretty restricted zone because of its conservation policies to protect its land and culture. So, carrying some important legal documents would be mandatory for you. You might get fined heavily if you do not abide by their rules. Carry at least one legal government-issued identity proof with you like Aadhar Card, Pan Card, Voter card, passport and don’t forget your driving license.

Here are some other documents which if you carry will save a lot of your time:

  • Inner line permit (multiple copies)
  • Print out of your itinerary
  • Phone numbers and address are written in a paper of your family and friends
  • Passport size photographs
  • Medical Insurance if you have any

7. Another Backup plan

Here are some of the things for which you must have a backup plan. Do not forget to carry them.

  • Fuel Fuel stations are scarcely available on the way to Ladakh and even within Ladakh. So, carrying some extra fuel would be a great backup plan for your Ladakh bike trip. As soon as you see a fuel station, get your machine refilled because you never know when you will get to see another. If you are a bike rider then do not ignore it.
  • Cash Facilities like ATM also won’t be available for you everywhere on this journey. Carrying extra cash would be the best idea because you have to halt for the night in hotels and also pay for the food. In Ladakh, unfortunately, you won’t find even a single ATM, only Leh has all of them. So, don’t depend on credit cards and carry some extra cash
  • Mobile connectivity In Ladakh, only the Postpaid connections of BSNL will work. So, if you are coming from a different state, get yourself a BSNL postpaid connection to avoid any inconvenience. Leh does support other networks but getting a BSNL postpaid would be best if you don’t want to lose contact on the way.

8. Photography Gear

If you are a photographer then check this list out so that you make sure you have carried everything you need to meet your requirement.

  • Extra Batteries or Powerbank
  • Extra Memory cards
  • Lamps for night photography

Note: If you want to take your laptop there are some precautions you must take because in extreme cold and high altitude your laptop can get damaged. So, carry a waterproof bag and also do not switch at elevations more than 11000 ft above sea level. As laptops also have to acclimatize themselves to the climate.

Conclusion:

Cross-checking this list before embarking on your journey can save you from a major crisis on your Ladakh bike trip this season. This way you won’t forget anything and also won’t get frustrated while on the journey. However, for some riders, this list may not be perfect but we have laid down the most important and the ones which are mandatory.

If you feel we have left out on any of them, then please let us know. We will keep adding them to the list. Anyways riders, we hope that you have got a much broader idea of your luggage from this article and we hope to see you this season conquering these roads.

If you are alone and want to join a group, then please visit us at BackPackClan . We will provide you with an affordable package on your bike trip and also provide great assistance on the road. We will take care of you in summary. So, don’t worry much because we got your back on this.

Things to carry for Leh-Ladakh trip

Things to carry for Leh-Ladakh trip

Leh-Ladakh is one of the most popular destinations in India, and people crave to visit this astounding beauty. However, before you plan your trip, it is essential to collect and pack the essentials. These essentials will help you have a comfortable journey that is going to be a memorable one. To guide you to the essential products, we have brought down the complete list down below.

Extra set of clothes

Leh-Ladakh is a high altitude region, so it is essential to carry extra warm clothing during the night. Temperatures vary in this part of the country, and you can also purchase cotton shawls that are available in plenty in the fresh market. In short, make sure to keep change for every weather, thus making your stay comfortable at Leh-Ladakh.

Kopin (Snow boots)

Snow boots are a must if you plan to visit places above 3500mts above sea level. It is most important to carry, especially if you wish to walk on snow or do any excursion with packed lunch up in the mountains or trekking at higher altitudes like Pangong Tso Lake near Leh and Nubra valley.

Gloves and Woolen stuff

Mittens are better than gloves during any Leh Ladakh trip. It isn't easy to drive in winter without gloves, but if you don't want to buy it while travelling, it is good to get your hands on used stuff.

Torch at night

It is advisable not to go out after 6 PM, so carry headlamps or flashlights. We'd recommend having a flashlight with you after 6 PM for safety reasons, even if you plan to stay back in the campground.

Warm undergarments and Woolen socks/footwear

It gets freezing during nights in Ladakh, so bring along enough woollen clothes, including footwear/socks. If you wish, you can even order or purchase new ones in Leh. Make a note that carrying extra pair of undergarments, socks or footwear is recommended. After all, you would not want to fall into a situation where you fall short of shoes, footwear or undergarments due to any mishap.

Cash and emergency medicine

Cash helps pay for parking, toll taxes etc. and even if you plan to stay in a hotel, do carry enough money as many places still don't have card facilities. Carry few medicines with anti-bacterial/painkillers just in case you need them during the trip.

Shoe cleaner

It is essential to carry the helios shoe cleaning kit, and it will help you keep your shoes clean during your entire trip. Helios is the right choice, as it is hassle-free and does not require you to take much effort while cleaning the boots.

Camera stuff - Memory cards, charger

Remember to carry extra memory cards or go on an unlimited data pack on your mobile network while travelling in Leh Ladakh. A carrying power bank can be handy too. There are not many charging points, so bring along either your power bank or an inverter/UPS that plugs into the car cigarette lighter port or 12V socket of cars. You can also get inverters with multiple USB charging ports in Leh.

Carrying sunglasses is compulsory during any Ladakh trip. Even if it's cold outside, sun rays can still affect the eyes badly. Pick up sunglasses from a good brand that can work on protecting your eyes well in this beautiful place.

Camera gear - Tripod and Chargers

Carrying a tripod may not be compulsory but sometimes, if you plan to stay near frozen lakes /mountains during the night, having a set of LED lights is helpful as they will give some warm light at such places. Similarly, bring along extra batteries and chargers as the power supply is limited during the winter months.

So, the above listed are some of the essential items that are a must to carry while going on a Ladakh trip. If you are planning a trip today, get on to packing your items to ensure you don't miss anything.

leh ladakh trip things to carry

Ultimate checklist for your Leh- Ladakh trip!!

Photo of Amita Borde

Last year I was on an adventurous road trip towards heaven on earth called LEH-LADAKH!! I just can’t express how soulful and picturesque the sceneries and landscapes were. Even the roads were jaw droppingly stunning, as if we are travelling all the way to heaven. If you are planning for a road trip to leh-Ladakh, month of July and august can be treated as unarguably best months to get that incredible life time experience. Since we were a whole bunch of 20-25 people on the trip, all had something or other to share about what to pack and what not to, before the trip. So there wasn’t any chance to miss anything. Still I was short of some important things during the trip and over packed which was hardly needed.

We traveled from Mumbai to Chandigarh by train, then Chandigarh to Manali by Volvo and then from Manali our bike – adventure road trip kicked off.

I am going to share the list of things to carry precisely on your road trip to Leh-Ladakh…so dat you won't miss anything & enjoy to the fullest!!!

Since I was travelling for 10-15 days, accordingly i have listed below things which i carried in numbers.

Clothes, jackets/warmer and shoes

7-8 T-shirts : I packed more no. Of tees so I don’t feel short of it as we were on the go and just to be on safer side. Consider nylon tees for outing so that if it rains then will get dried easily and cotton ones as sleep wear.

2 pair of woollen socks : will suggest to carry 2 pairs of woollen socks and 2 pairs of full length athlete socks. These are more than enough. I carried 3 pairs, which was not really needed.

Use and throw Underwear : These are good alternative for your regular ones as you don’t need to laundry or store the used ones in your bags. Still if you are not comfortable with these then carry according to your comfort coz you don’t wanna ruin your trip.

3 jeans/pants : Carry at least 3 jeans/pants. I would prefer to carry jeans as they are warmer and classy at the same time.

[caption id="attachment_233" align="alignnone" width="780"] Khardungla pass[/caption]

Jackets and warmers

2 pair of Thermal inner wear : Most needed to keep you warm during whole journey. Just line it up under your clothes and get going.

Waterproof hand gloves : Try to carry waterproof hand gloves coz they are extremely necessary, for the reason that if it’s raining, it won’t get wet and would leave your hands dry and warm.

2 Balaclavas : Another very important thing to carry i.e. 2 balaclavas. I carried only one and ended up puking on it and didn’t had an extra one. Don’t expect that someone will lend you theirs. Carry your own and be safe.

Gumboots : Let me tell you guys that I did not carried those and I regret that. Please carry gumboots or buy from the local shop in Leh where you are staying before heading towards your journey. You will come across many rivers flowing on the roads of leh in mountains, so to cross them these are must.

Fleece jacket/ t-shirt : 1 fleece t-shirt is enough to keep you warm in whole trip. Put if over your t-shirt, so if you feel warm you can remove it. I sometimes only needed thermal warmer.

Leather jacket : Buy a good quality of leather jacket coz the bad quality will give you only stylish look and will freeze you like hell. If a day you are not visiting any points and just exploring local area of Leh, then a leather jacket itself will keep you warm.

Windcheater/raincoat : I would suggest to carry a pair with you i.e. top and bottom. I carried only a full size raincoat, it made me uncomfortable to sit on the bike and my legs were overall drenched in rains.    Hiking shoes : If you are planning for a trek den only carry hiking shoes otherwise normal sneakers are good to go.

Camping backpack : Carry medium sized camping bag, if you don’t have it buy yourself one it can be used for other trips as well. Most easy to carry and fits a huge amount of stuffs in it. It is a better option rather than carrying those heavy suitcases.

Zip lock pouch and dry sack : Plastic zip lock pouch for mobile, earphones, charger, travel charger, go-pro, camera, etc. Carry these things in a dry sack and keep it safe from rains. Keep extra dry sack with some important clothes in it like sleep wear coz you never know when it’s going to rain and you won’t be left with any dry clothes to wear.

Small backpack : Which you will be carrying with you with necessary items on the go i.e. rain-gear, mobile and accessories, camera, wallet, snacks, lip balm, sunscreen. I didn’t carried this with me and I regretted not doing it.

Medicines, Toiletries and other Travel gear

Medicines : you will be miles away from doctor hence make sure to keep handful of medicines with you. Now I carried a box full of medicines, which I always carry to any trip. I had discussed some important ones below;

Diamox tablet : since Leh is at high altitude the oxygen level is low over there. you won't need this in the local area of Leh, but when you travel to highest altitudes like Khardungla Pass, then take the night before you planning to explore it. Diamox tablet is for thinning the blood and to restore oxygen and prevent and reduce the  symptoms  of  altitude sickness.  It’s a 250 mg tablet. Having the basics with you will allow you to deal with medical issues immediately and to keep going.

If you are already on medication consult your doctor before your trip. I was on medication that time still I had these tabs, it didn’t affected my health.

Oxygen cylinder : if you had planned trip with a tour company they have this cylinder handy with them so not to worry, if you are on your own den carry one small 1 litre cylinder you may require at khardungla pass.

I recommend packing :  Band aids, Aspirin, Camphor, re-hydration packets – ORS, Glucon D, Electral powder, Crocin, Relispray, Iodex balm, Vicks vaporub, Strepsils.

[caption id="attachment_230" align="alignnone" width="864"] Me at Tso Pangong lake[/caption]

Hand Sanitizer : One of the best ways to avoid becoming ill, wash your hands thoroughly and often. You won’t get proper basins and hand washes to wash your hands at the dhabas over there.

Sunscreen : Get yourself at least 70 SPF sunscreen of your choice. I use lotus suncreen. Carry a large bottle coz you are going to get tanned coz of severe sun exposure. Keep in the bag you are going to carry with you.

Quick dry towel : This is a good alternative for normal towel, dries easily and u can dump it in your bag even if you are in a hurry.

Sunglasses & hat/cap : carry a good quality sunglasses which will protect your eyes from severe UV rays and cap to cover your head.

Lip balm and moisturizing cream : Due to the cold weather your skin will start breaking out, so carry a bottle of moisturizing cream and lip balm with high amount of SPF.

Handkerchief : don’t underestimate the power of a hand kerchief. Due to the low level of oxygen, if you smell camphor it really helps your respiratory system. Put 2-3 tabs off camphor in thin cotton handkerchief and keep it handy. You will require this.

Toilet paper :  One roll, use sparingly. Better to be self-sufficient here. I often also keep a pack of tissues in my pocket as well for such emergencies. Since it is a village area you won’t get well equipped wash rooms. We had no option but to use extremely dirty toilets.

Sim card MTNL/BSNL: now in Leh no other sim cards work. Keep a postpaid MTNL/BSNL sim card with you. Its very necessary.

When we left Manali for leh, for 2-3 days there was no range to any of the sim-cards not even the MTNL ones, even in the village were we halted called Sarchu there was not even a telephone in the hotel premises. So I would suggest you to inform your loved ones before leaving for Leh.

Travel charger : keep a travel charger with you for your mobile or camera coz you won’t resist clicking pictures the whole trip and battery should not be the issue.

Snacks :  Even if your meals are provided to you on the trip, please carry snacks with you which are non-perishable and would last longer. On our bike trip we traveled for 5-10 hrs. journey with very less pit stops. Stuff some power packed granola bars, nuts, Snickers bars, a jar of peanut butter, biscuits and crackers into your small backpack that is handy.

Bluetooth speaker : Trust me travelling on the roads of leh that to on a bullet is mesmerizing. To make your journey more beautiful a Bluetooth speaker playing your favorite journey songs on it, is awesome experience.

Playing cards : a must for a train journey.

Maximum products linked above is from Decathlon, which i personally used, they have huge range of sports, travel, trek, Gym collection.

Follow this ultimate packing list and you are good to go for your road trip to Leh-Ladakh...have a happiest journey!

List of Things to Carry While Travelling to Ladakh – For Bikers

If you are traveling by bike then apart from the above list, you also need to add the following items in your list of things to carry while travelling to Ladakh:

  • Raincoat. It is a must to be a requirement for any bike rider, as there high chances of raining when you travel between Chandigarh and Rohtang La pass on Leh to Manali highway. If you riding from Srinagar, then the area between Srinagar and Zoji La is the area where most of the travelers find raining. You can also use a raincoat as a Jacket. It keeps your clothes clean your clothes clean along the dirt tracks on passes and along the Moore Plains.
  • Waterproof gloves
  • Waterproof Boots.

The ride to Ladakh is known for adventures not only because of high passes but also because you need to cross many water streams during the entire journey. Out of these water streams, water stream at Baralacha La is most brutal.

The best way to cross a water stream is not to ride in the middle of the path. Always ride in first gear, and control the acceleration using the clutch. The simple and easy way is to wait and watch others and do the same.

  • Spare parts
  • Puncture Kit
  • Clutch wire
  • Chain locks
  • Petrol: There are no petrol pumps between Tandi and Karu (around 380 Km stretch) on the Manali to Leh highway. Make sure you have enough petrol with you to cover this stretch.

Puncture shops are also not available and even if you find one, there is no guarantee that they will have the tube, which is why a tire tube is a must-pack item even if you don’t have a puncture kit.

Make sure to add a first aid kit, torch light, ready to eatables, and power bank in your list of things to carry while travelling to Ladakh.

leh ladakh trip things to carry

Preparing Your Vehicle

Before setting off on a memorable trip to Leh Ladakh , it’s vital to guarantee that your vehicle is in top-notch condition to handle the rugged terrain. The following vehicle maintenance checks are pivotal.

Service and Oil Change

A thorough servicing of your automobile is essential to address any underpinning issues. Get the car service done by a professional serviceman familiar with the challenges of driving in Ladakh. Furthermore, changing the machine oil and filter will ensure optimal performance during the long hours of going on gruelling roads.

Tires and Wheel Alignment

Review your car’s tires for wear and tear and replace them if necessary. Driving on uneven and rocky terrain can beget fresh stress on the tires, so it’s pivotal to have robust and dependable tires. Additionally, proper wheel alignment is essential to tackle the rough roads of Ladakh, as it ensures stable running and reduces unwarranted strain on the suspension system.

Suspension and Clutch Plate

Ladakh’s terrain can be harsh on a vehicle’s suspension system. Hence, it’s pivotal to have the suspension checked and any flawed elements replaced before embarking on the trip. Also, consider changing the clutch plate set to avoid potential issues during the trip, especially when driving through steep inclines and rough terrain.

Brakes and Wipers

Ensuring your motorcar’s braking system is in excellent working condition is of utmost significance when navigating through steep inclines and descents in Ladakh. Check the brake pads and rotors for wear and tear and replace them if demanded. Moreover, install new wipers to tackle changeable rainfall conditions, as Ladakh’s rainfall can change quickly, and visibility is pivotal for safe driving.

Coolant and Electrics

Top up your car’s coolant to help prevent overheating at high altitudes. Ladakh’s mountainous terrain and low atmospheric pressure can strain the engine, making proper cooling essential. Confirm all electrical components, including the battery, lights, and other electrical systems, to avoid implicit breakdowns during the trip.

Necessary Spares to Carry for Ladakh

In Ladakh’s remote areas, getting immediate assistance can be gruelling. Thus, it’s pivotal to carry a set of necessary spare parts, including

Reserve Tire

Carry a full-size spare tire in good condition and essential tools to change it if demanded. Driving on rocky roads increases the threat of punctures, and having a dependable spare tire can save you from being stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Pack a comprehensive toolkit containing spanners, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and other essential tools for minor repairs. This toolkit will be your lifeline in case of any mechanical issues during the trip.

First Aid Kit

Stock a well-equipped first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic solutions, pain relievers, and other medical essentials. Due to Ladakh’s remote position, medical installations may not always be readily available, making a well-prepared first aid kit pivotal for any extremities.

Vehicle Fluids

To deal with extremities, carry extra amounts of machine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. The high mound and gruelling terrain can stress your car, and having spare fluids can help address unanticipated issues.

Extra Fuses and Bulbs

Pack extra fuses and bulbs for your car’s electrical system to address unforeseen failures. These small yet essential particulars can save you from potentially dangerous situations, especially during night driving.

Other Essential Items to Carry for Ladakh

Apart from vehicle-related essentials, certain particulars can significantly enhance your comfort and safety during the trip.

Oxygen Cylinder

Due to Ladakh’s high mound, carrying a portable oxygen cylinder can be a lifesaver in case of altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is a genuine concern when travelling to Ladakh, and having a readily available oxygen supply can give the required relief in such situations.

A portable air compressor can help you adjust tire pressure as you move through different terrains. In Ladakh, where the landscape varies drastically, having the flexibility to adjust tire pressure according to the road conditions can significantly refine your vehicle’s performance.

While some places in Ladakh have eateries, others may not. Budgeting for meals is essential, especially in remote areas where options might be limited.

Acclimatization

Adaptation is pivotal when travelling to high altitudes. Spend the first few days in Leh resting and avoiding emphatic activities to help your body acclimate to the thin air.

  • Inner Line Permits

Certain areas in Ladakh, such as Nubra Valley , Pangong Lake , and Tso Moriri , require inner-line permits. Attain these permits from the original authorities before heading to these regions.

Respect Local Culture

Ladakh is home to a unique culture and heritage. Admire the original customs, traditions, and religious spots, and seek authorization before taking photos, especially in monasteries.

Waste Management

leh ladakh trip things to carry

“What’s new in Duster? A lot of people did it. Complete the trip with the 13-year-old Wagon R and you would have done something different. That’s the real challenge,” said my cousin Sunit.

Although my Wagon R has never let me down so far, she still needed to get the medical certificate to prove she is fit and well to make a trip to the high pass land. She was then taken to the hospital for a full body exam.

Before proceeding, I would like to clarify that my car is registered in Delhi, but I am from Dharamshala and that is where the journey began.

Preparation for car trip in Leh Ladakh

Below is a long list of checks performed. I am sharing the full list so it may also be useful for readers in the future. The list below is according to the requirements for a 13 year old car. May not apply to all vehicles depending on condition; but you should check all of the items below to make sure your trip remains hassle free and faces no problems on the way.

If you have exceeded 6,000 kilometers or nearly a year since your last service, it would be best to do a full service of your vehicle. If not, have at least one complete health check. Make sure all nuts and bolts are tight; also check fan belts, weather, etc. On my Wagon R, I fixed it and inspected it carefully. Make sure nothing is lost and there are no rattle noises anywhere.

Check engine oil, brake and gear. If the last change was more than 5000 kilometers away, you will need another change. If it is less than 5000, have them all reload. To be on a safer side, my recommendation would be that you change it completely to get the best engine performance from your car.

Filter Change

Check your vehicle’s oil filter, air and fuel for replacement. I changed them all. Ladakh has a very dusty environment and an old air filter can get clogged. I planned to clean the air filter again after we got to Leh. My car’s fuel filter has also been changed.

Tire and wheel alignment

I had changed the tires about 5,000 kilometers before this trip, so I didn’t need another change. But you should look closely at the tread left on your tires, including the spare one. If the tires are nearing the end of their lives or have cuts and cracks, it would be better to purchase a new set. In addition to the tread, also check the wheel alignment and, if necessary, correct it.

Suspensions

I changed all the shock absorbers of my Wagon R because it was an old car. You may not need to change, but you should check the shock absorbers and tighten the springs.

Clutch plate assembly changed

I changed the clutch plates as well. This is extremely important and you should check this regardless of the age of your car. You’ll be crossing several passes and steep climbs along the way, and it’s best to make sure your car’s clutch plates are long enough to see you comfortably while traveling.

leh ladakh trip things to carry

Brakes changed

I had to totally change the brakes to be on a safer side. You should also check the brake pads and shoes for remaining life on them. When driving in Ladakh, you will be constantly using the brakes; therefore, if necessary, replace them completely. Also check the brake fluid level before starting. A good practice before starting the trip would be to bleed the brakes to ensure they are working as well as possible.

Wiper Assembly New

I also changed the wiper and kept a new one as a spare to be on a safer side. As I realized later on this trip, this proved to be a great decision. The wiper motor has also been checked.

Altered soda

I changed the coolant and did an inspection of the entire cooling system. All hoses, hose clips have been checked and properly tightened. You should also check it and replace it if there is any wear. In addition, I washed and cleaned the radiator tubes and fins with a high pressure water jet.

All wires and connections have been checked to ensure that the electrical system is working well, with no frayed wires anywhere. The lamps have been changed. The alternator and starter have been carefully inspected and the connectors have been cleaned.

I didn’t need to change the battery, but you should check yours. It should be in good condition and if you are older than two years, check that the terminals are free of corrosion. Fill the battery water.

Necessary Spares to Carry for Ladakh

leh ladakh trip things to carry

Below is a list of some spares that we carried to complete our car preparation for Leh Trip.

  • Towing Rod – 2
  • Head light bulbs extra were kept
  • Engine Oil – 2 Ltrs extra kept
  • Gear Oil – 1 Ltrs extra kept
  • Brake Oil – – 1 bottle extra kept
  • Fuses – Kept 10 extra fuses
  • Set of wrenches
  • Wheel spanner
  • Small Hammer
  • Plier + Screwdriver with some nut bolts
  • Petrol Jerry Can 10 liters + Bottles 3-5 (2 Liters Each)
  • Tyre puncture kit

Other Items to Carry for Ladakh

leh ladakh trip things to carry

Below is the list of some other items that we took care of as a part of the preparations

  • Water bottles 2-3
  • Power Banks – 2 Nos
  • Leather gloves
  • Deo – VERY IMP
  • 2-3 blankets
  • 3 Sleeping bags
  • 1 Foldable Tent for emergency
  • Medicine and first aid kit including Diamox

Once the complete list was checked, the wait for the D – Day started (16th Sep 2018). Although I got a lot of help from online Blogs but still had butterflies in my stomach. This article by Vargis Khan How to Prepare your Car for Ladakh Trip talks in details about getting your vehicle ready. But due to my excitement, a lot of questions were still in my mind.

leh ladakh trip things to carry

Hope we Have not left out anything.

  • My Wagon R will be jam-packed with the list above. Will she be able to take it?
  • Hope She performs well.
  • Hope there will be no underbelly hits.
  • As per recommendations did not book any accommodations in advance. Hope that will not be a problem.
  • Hope will not face any tire problems.
  • All I could do at that time was to HOPE. Yes it is a big word that makes ordinary people do extraordinary feats.

11 Days Itinerary for Ladakh

With this hope, we were off to sleep as we had fixed 6 AM as the departure time. I leave you with the below-finalized itinerary for our trip.

  • 16 Sep – Dharamshala – Srinagar – Day 1
  • 17 Sep – Srinagar – Kargil/Lamayuru – Day 2
  • 18 Sep – Kargil/Lamayuru – Leh – Day 3
  • 19 Sep – Leh Local with Permits – Day 4
  • 20 Sep – Leh – Hunder Via Khardung La – Day 5
  • 21 Sep – Hunder – Pangong (Via Agham – Shyok) – Merak – Day 6
  • 22 Sep – Merak – Tso Moriri/ Hanle via Chushul, Rezang La – Day 7
  • 23 Sep – Tso Moriri/ Hanle – Pang – Day 8
  • 24 Sep – Pang – Jispa – Day 9
  • 25 Sep – Jispa – Manali – Day 10
  • 26 Sep – Manali – Dharamshala – Day 11

Hmm, well that sounds pretty simple. Not exactly. As it turned out, this was just the initial plan, a rough draft of what our journey would be like. But trips like this sometimes have a way of their own, and that’s exactly what happened to us. We were expecting a quiet trip with no surprises, but did it happen? I covered this in the next part of this travel journal, Dharamshala to Srinagar – the journey begins.

leh ladakh trip things to carry

Car Ladakh – Cost of Preparation

In total, all repairs and replacements on the Wagon R were slightly above Rs. 15,000. This includes regular service + shock absorbers + brake disc + wiper assembly + clutch assembly. The suspension was considered good. Rest, I took oil and other things with me for an emergency, but all parts were returned later. We returned without a problem. Not even a puncture in the tire.

Below are some other tips on how to prepare your car for Ladakh.

  • If you were wondering which car is best for a trip to Leh Ladakh, a standard answer would be one with good GC. But as you can see, I completed the trip in a Wagon R, so yes, you can also do that in a low GC car. All that is required is that you prepare well and drive carefully. Any car can act as the best car for the Leh Ladakh trip as long as you know what you are doing.
  • Keep a regular guide on tire pressure. When you drive at high altitudes, tire air pressure may increase due to low air pressure.
  • It would be nice if you knew or learned some minor repairs. This would include repairing punctures, changing tires and tubes, replacing lamps and fuses, and checking and supplying battery water, coolant, engine oil, and so on.
  • Make sure you also pack the necessary documents; such as your driver’s license, your car registration documents, insurance certificate, and pollution control certificate.

List of things To Carry To Ladakh Trip

Thrillious-thinags-to-carry

If you are planning to visit Leh Ladakh,  then definitely you would be searching for what are the things that you should take with you on the trip.  If you are visiting for the first time then let me say you that the Leh Ladakh terrain and nature will be hard on you as the climate and altitude is not a normal thing for a common human being.

Unlike any other hill station,   Leh Ladakh is full of challenges and will put your patience courage and your fitness to taste in every corner of its mountains.

Basic amenities like ATM, mobile connectivity, petrol pumps,  eateries, and even people are scarce.

So before making your mind to visit Leh Ladakh, you should make your mind of what things to carry to ladakh that are important to take with you for the trip.

So hello, I am Niraj Kashyap and I have visited Leh Ladakh by a road trip with my bike with several of my friends,  and with personal experience, I can say you what are the things that are required for every person who is visiting Leh Ladakh must-have.

If you are visiting via road or air,  you must have the basic things that we mention here below.  And don’t forget we have created this as a checklist which you can download here below.

So in this article, I have divided the list into different sections the things that you need to take:-  Like in which month you are visiting Leh Ladakh , via what means are you visiting there ( Road or Air ),  visiting with your friend or solo trip and are you a male or a female.

The broad categories are here as follows

  • Month in which you are visiting
  • Connectivity
  • Accessories
  • Photography gears
  • Biking gears

1. Month In which you are Visiting Leh Ladakh

Your clothes depend on your decision of which month of the year you are visiting Leh Ladakh.  As you know Leh Ladakh has the world’s highest motorable road which all the bikers dream to accomplish once in a life,  known as “ Khardungla ”.

Also Read:   Best Month to visit Leh Ladakh .

The hottest climate in Leh Ladakh in September ,  and believe me friends, I have visited Leh Ladakh in September and found it freezing cold .  You will find water crossing with water as cold as they can freeze your leg. Roads full of black ice,  you can play with snow on top of the mountains, and at night the temperature reaches near -7 Degree Celsius ( Minus ).

2. Clothing

So your clothes should be containing the followings:

  • Thermal inner clothes.
  • Two pair of gloves and one of them should be waterproof
  • Multiple pair of socks
  • Muffler or scarf
  • Light jacket
  • Heavy wind and waterproof jacket

What clothes you will need and how much you can enjoy depends on the month you are traveling to Ladakh.

If you are traveling via road and if you are especially on a bike ,  then these are the extra things you must carry:-

  • High knee waterproof boots
  • Normal shoes
  • Multiple pair of jeans and t-shirts

If you are not taking a high knee waterproof boots,  then consider carrying rain protector for shoes or extra-large size garbage bags .  As this will be used during river crossing as you can’t predict how much water will be there when you will be crossing it.

3. Connectivity

Once you depart from Manali, you will be totally cut off from the rest of the world.  There are only a few places between Leh to Manali that you can get connectivity.

If you are using a prepaid SIM,  then you must get a Postpaid SIM from BSNL as it’s the only network that works there till you reach Leh.In Leh you will get reception for almost all the networks.

4. Medicines

There is a list of medicines that you must carry while visiting Leh Ladakh.  And if you are suffering from some kind of illness or disorder and you need to have some kind of prescribed medicine then you should definitely get them with you before leaving for Leh Ladakh.

Which is the most important medicine that you should carry?

Answer: Diamox

Diamox is the lifesaver,  as this medicine acute mountain sickness.  Diamox is not a cure but it’s a precaution type of medicine.  You should start taking Diamox a day before you reach Manali. You need to have 2 capsules a day and drink plenty of water with it.

Consult a Doctor if you have any kind of allergies before taking Diamox.

Other medicines,

Here I mention some the symptoms that you should consider and take medicines as for it

  • Diarrhea (  loose motion )
  • Any other kind of pain
  • Cough and cold
  • Instant energy chocolate Bars

If you are a female .

  • Sanitary pads
  • Normal medicine for your periods

Check the complete list of medicines that you should have while visiting Leh Ladakh.

5.  Toiletries

There are some basic toiletries plus some extra ones that you should carry to the Leh Ladakh trip.  Here I have come up with some of the toiletries that I had while visiting Leh Ladakh.

  • Hand  sanitizer
  • Toilet paper
  • Cold cream for lip balm
  • Mustard oil

Also Read:   Must Have Toiletries for Leh Ladakh

Toiletries that I have mentioned here are essential and should not be ignored.  I have mentioned the reason why you should have each of this product that I have listed above in the post link given up above.

6.  Eatables

Unlike any other trip, You won’t find too many shops or villages to buy eatables on the road.  You will find only a few shops after driving for hours and hours, and that shop only contains those products that most of the visitors would like to have.

So if you have any personal preference for any eatables consider caring it with you.  Some of the items that I carry it along with my bike was

  • Kaju ( Cashew )
  • Kismis ( Raisins )
  • Chewing gums
  • Chocolates

Here we have made the complete list of eatables you should take for your leh ladakh trip .

Keep this item in few quantities with you in your backpack and reserve the rest in your main luggage.  While you will be traveling in Leh Ladakh you have to ride for hours and hours and all you would find is Hill mountains and roads.

And the shops would mostly have Maggi and few biscuits that may not be of your choice so consider caring your eatable items along with you.

7. Accessories

Here is the Most important Accessories for the Leh Ladakh trip and if you are visiting Leh on your bike, then read our detailed article on:-  List of accessories that you should have while visiting Leh Ladakh .

Power Bank:   You have to Ride for hours and hours and the scenes and the natural beauty or so beautiful that you may consider taking several pictures.  But since the temperature is low, the mobile battery drains out very quickly. So always have a power bank with you so that you can Recharge your mobile and capture all the memories with you.

ir?t=trendszon0c 21&l=ur2&o=31

Sunglasses:   Don’t forget to take your sunglasses there even if you don’t like wearing it. When traveling through the mountains the contrast and the color of the mountains are so tough to your eyes that you may start to have pain in your eyes or temporary blindness also known as hallucination.

Sunglasses will protect you from the contrast colors of the snows of the mountains and the reflections of road and the river.  The Snow as White as Pearl while the roads as Black as charcoal, The Hills and the river will create a motion effect and all when combined together with the sunrise + the ultraviolet rays , you will have a serious eye problem.

So consider good sunglasses to avoid this.

  • Passport size photographs
  • And multiple copies of your government-issued documents.

This document is required in several stages of your trip.  So keep them in such a way that you can reach them easily but also you don’t lose them while traveling.

9. Photography Gears

if you are considering carrying a DSLR along with you,  Then there are a few photography gears that you should not forget to pack with you.

  • Several memory cards
  • Memory card Reader
  • Extra batteries
  • Battery charger
  • Clean cloth
  • Rain covers
  • and a protective case to protect all of the above items.

10. Biking Gears

It’s not a doubt that several people love to travel Leh Ladakh on a bike as it’s the dream destination for every bikers.  The biking gears contain a list of items that are required for you and your bike.

So I have divided these into 2 different sections.

  • How to prepare your motorcycle for Leh Ladakh
  • What are the things to consider as biking gear for Leh Ladakh

I have also included the links for Amazon so that you can buy the gears that you don’t have.  The first article includes all the essential items that are required for your bike in case if its breaks down in the middle of nowhere. And the second guide features all the essential gears that is important for you for your protection.

It’s the digital era,  we all like to use Google pay, Paytm or any kind of digital payment method.  But don’t forget our all friend “ cash ”. as you will have no network work while traveling in Leh Ladakh and you will hardly find any ATM.

You will need to have cash so that you can buy your food for the basic requirements along your way.

If you are traveling from Manali then consider withdrawing cash in Manali so that you don’t have a tension to find ATM after you leave Manali.

Leh Ladakh Winter Trip – Things to Carry for Ladakh Trip

Ladakh Winter Trip – Essentials to Carry

This article is a continuation from my PREVIOUS ARTICLE covering various preparations that you must make before going to Ladakh on a winter trip. This article is a quick check list of items that you should consider carrying with you.

Ever heard of Murphy’s Law? There are several variations of it but the two most common versions are “whatever can go wrong, will go wrong” or “things will go wrong in any given situation, if you give them a chance,”. You really need to keep this mind while preparing for a Ladakh winter trip. Things here can turn against you at any given point of time and when they do, there is a high chance that you may be in a situation where either help may not come at all or it may take a while to arrive. For example (and I am just quoting this as an example because it will apply to a summer trip when you are driving on your own and not a winter trip), if you think that you may have a flat tire in middle of nowhere, then prepare keeping in mind that it will happen and you will have to fix it at some point in your trip. Prepare your entire Ladakh winter trip keeping this in mind and you will enjoy your trip to the fullest and arrive back home safe and sound.

What I stated above about things going wrong multiplies tenfold during a winter trip to Ladakh. Due to extreme cold, even the locals in Ladakh move to another place, sometimes looking for a warmer climate or to earn their living elsewhere until the winter gets over. So there are even a fewer people in the city of Leh, a number that goes even further down while you are visiting the nearby areas. Preparing for a Ladakh winter trip means that you will need to practically carry everything along with assuming that you will not get anything over there. Below is a list of items that I put together, some basic amenities that will prove helpful. This is just what came in my mind and you may add or delete items from here as per your requirement.

Ladakh Winter Trip – Clothing:

You really need good ones for these. If you think that your winter clothes that you use in plains would suffice in Ladakh as well, you are wrong. You do not face temperatures below zero degrees at your home town but you will be in Ladakh. When you chose a jacket, find the one that seems heaviest in the market. Secondly, it is just not your torso but also your neck and face that you need to protect so find a one that has a hood attached to it, preferably a Parka or something like it. Along with your jacket, carry enough woolens to wear underneath it. If you cannot find a good enough jacket/parka in the market, you can easily order one online.

Monkey Cap:

Get a warm enough Monkey cap as well. Your jacket hood will only cover your head and ears but you also need something to cover front of your face too. A muffler would come in handy too.

Buy a pair of shoes from the hiking and trekking category if you do not already have one. These shoes are usually ankle length high (do not buy unless it is so) and come handy when walking over ice. Carry an extra pair as well in case your shoes get wet.

Socks and Gloves:

Another essential if you do not want your fingers and toes going numb. Carry woolen socks to keep your feet warm. Do not however carry the woolen gloves as they do not really help that much in my experience. If you can shed a little money, buy a pair of warm waterproof gloves, the ones they use for skiing. Or else, buy one of those really thick gloves with fur inside.

I found these really useful for two reasons, you can easily wear them underneath your clothes and they really help keeping you warm inside. Second is you can also sleep wearing them at night.

Carry a kit comprising of some basic medicines for cold & cough, fever, headache, upset stomach, body ache etc. For acute mountain sickness, carry Diamox but know that Diamox is a precautionary medicine and not a cure. Take a dose a few hours before your flight because if you start feeling symptoms, then even Diamox will not help.

As I mentioned in the first part of this article, please do not travel to Ladakh in such harsh weather if you have any kind of medical condition. Consult your doctor first. I am not a medical person so please just do not take my advice for it.

Creams and Lotions:

Two things. Carry a sunscreen lotion of highest SPF that you can find. You will not just get tanned walking around with a sunscreen in Ladakh but you may get actually get sunburns so apply it before you step out in the sun and then reapply after some time. Second thing is to carry a cold cream and a lip balm. Carry a moisturizer as well if you can.

Toilet Paper:

I do not want to get into details of why here but just carry it.

Spare Batteries:

Ever heard that batteries get exhausted in cold weather rather quick? It is true so for your cameras and electronic gadgets, please make sure that you are carrying spare batteries. For you mobile phone, a power bank and car charger should do the job.

Sunglasses:

Not really a must but I recommend that you carry a good pair of sunglasses. When the sun shines on the snow, it gets pretty rough for the eyes.

Identity Proof:

To carry an identify proof is must and it should be government issued, like your driving license, PAN card, Aadhar card. You will also be needing these documents to obtain permits if you are planning to visit the restricted areas.

How to obtain permits for restricted areas in Ladakh

I am not saying that you withdraw enough cash right before starting from home but withdraw cash in Leh before you leave to visit nearby areas. There are no ATMs elsewhere in Ladakh so please carry enough cash. Also, chances of an ATM not working or running out of cash are quite high, especially in winter so while you are there at the ATM, do not just withdraw a couple thousand. Take out enough that you think will last next few days.

A few other things to carry, just putting it here as kind of checklist, would be Soap, toothpaste and brush, flask, torch, chargers for all your gadgets like phone and camera etc. It is also advised to carry eatables while you leave Leh as finding an eating joint/dhaba on the way in winter will be next to impossible. Another important tip would be to not plan your trip in a very tight schedule. As I mentioned above, whatever can go wrong will go wrong, so keep a buffer of couple of days. There can be unexpected snowfall that can leave you stranded, sometimes for a few hours and sometimes ever for a couple of days away from Leh so be prepared for that. Book your return flight a couple of days after your itinerary. If all goes well, relax and enjoy your stay in Leh. If you get stuck somewhere for a day or two, you won’t be missing your flight and booking another one.

Please CLICK HERE to take you to the next part of this article covering an ideal itinerary that you can follow for your trip. I hope this information was useful. If you think I missed something in the list above, please feel free to comment and add. You may also ask any questions if you have and I would be glad to answer.

Epic road trip from Manali to Leh, and the must-visit places for your travel itinerary

Panchali Dey , TIMESOFINDIA.COM , TRAVEL TRENDS , INDIA Updated : Apr 4, 2024, 09:41 IST

leh ladakh trip things to carry

When it comes to picking a road trip, many would pick their favourite one as the most sought-after Manali to Leh trip, and we can’t agree more. The very journey through the rugged terrain on your vehicle is an experience that will be etched in your heart forever.

This time, if you set off on your road trip, seize the opportunity to explore the resplendent beauty of the region. With snow-capped mountains, distant valleys, and the refreshing mountain breeze, the journey becomes even more exhilarating. As you travel through the rugged terrain, you'll pass through some of Ladakh's most renowned passes, which will allow you to marvel at the awe-inspiring beauty of the region no doubt.

The best time to travel to Leh Ladakh via this route would be from June to September. If travelling by road, it typically takes at least 2 days to cover this 473 km route with ample stops for rest.

If you have also been planning to hit the road and enjoy this road trip, here are some places that you should add to your itinerary for an unforgettable Manali Leh road trip.

Perched at an elevation of 6725 ft above sea level, this hill station captivates with its enchanting vistas. While summers offer pleasant weather, winters adorn the peaks with glistening snow, rendering it a picturesque destination en route from Manali to Ladakh.

Rohtang Pass

En route from Manali to Leh, the Rohtang Pass offers breathtaking panoramic views. Situated 51 km from Manali at an altitude of 3900 m, this route leads to destinations, such as Pangi, Lahaul Spiti, and Leh, offering vistas of snow-capped peaks and glaciers, with the Chandra River flowing nearby.

Keylong Pass

Whether you seek scenic strolls through quaint villages or awe-inspiring mountain vistas, Keylong is one such place that you won’t want to miss. Set adjacent to this locale is the magnificent Bhaga Valley, replete with verdant greenery. Serving as the administrative centre of Lahaul and Spiti district, Keylong is a favoured stopover among tourists and trekkers en route from Manali to Ladakh for an overnight stay.

Nestled beside the Chandra River, Jispa is a picturesque hamlet offering a captivating stopover during the Manali – Leh tour. Adorned naturally with streams, scenic peaks, verdant valleys, and lush foliage, it offers visitors an intimate encounter with Mother Nature.

Discover the charming Himalayan village of Darcha, nestled beside the Bhaga River, roughly 23 km from Keylong. It’s one of those places in India where you should try camping for a change. Frequented by tourists journeying from Manali to Ladakh, this place surely makes for a great pitstop.

Baralacha La

Nestled amid the lofty Zanskar region, Baralacha La serves as a pivotal mountain pass and confluence point of several roads. Connecting Lahaul to Ladakh, this plateau is enveloped by the Pir Panjal and Himalayan mountain ranges, offering a spectacular destination during the journey from Manali to Ladakh.

A hidden gem known primarily to those traversing the Manali – Leh route, Gata Loops captivates visitors with its stunning vistas nestled in the Western Himalayas. Accessing and departing from this location is as thrilling as the journey itself, making it a must-visit destination during the Manali to Ladakh journey.

As admin bans rallies in Leh activists say 'border march' not intended to break law

Leh, Apr 6 (PTI) With the Ladakh administration imposing prohibitory orders banning rallies on Sunday and a 24-hour reduction in internet speed, the Leh-based Apex Body said it has no intention of violating laws and hoped it will be allowed to carry out its proposed 'border march'.     The Apex Body, along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), is spearheading the agitation to demand statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.     The Apex Body announced the 'border (Pashmina) march' to Changthang to highlight the condition of grazers, who are allegedly losing prime pasture land to huge industrial plants to the south and Chinese encroachments to the north.     In an apparent move aimed at countering the march, the District Magistrate (DM) of Leh Santosh Sukhadeve on Friday ordered the imposition of CrPC section 144 on April 7 and directed that no procession, rally or march should be taken without his prior approval.     He said the Leh senior superintendent of police has reported that there were reliable inputs indicating a possible breach of peace and public tranquillity in the district.     "No one shall use the vehicle-mounted or other loudspeakers without prior approval from the competent authority. No public gathering without prior approval of the competent authority shall be allowed. No one shall make any statements which have the potential to disturb communal harmony and public tranquillity and which may lead to law-and-order problems in the district," the DM's order said.     "All persons shall ensure that they follow the Model Code of Conduct and that all the activities are according to the law," it added.     In a separate order, Additional Director General of Police of Ladakh S D Singh Jamwal ordered the scaling down of internet speed and mobile data services of 3G, 4G and 5G connections and public 5G Wi-Fi facilities to 2G within a 10-kilometre radius of Leh city from 6 pm on April 6 for 24 hours.     The DM of Leh, in another order, prohibited the posting or sharing such messages that have the potential to disturb communal harmony, peace and tranquillity and may lead to a law-and-order situation in the district.     "It shall be the responsibility of the admins of WhatsApp groups or social media platforms to monitor and filter such content immediately," the order read.     The Leh Apex Body (LAB) termed the restrictions ahead of its proposed border march an "overreaction" by the administration and said it has no intention of violating the law.     "We have been holding a chain hunger strike for the past 31 days and we feel such a reaction is the result of some misunderstanding," climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, flanked by LAB leader Chering Dorjay, told reporters here.     Wangchuk, who held a hunger strike for 21 days till March 26, said they strongly believe in peace and peaceful ways to highlight their demands, including those connected with the prevailing condition of the Pashmina grazers.     "If they stop us from marching ahead, it shows the government has something to hide and they do not want the real picture to reach the outside world… we are hopeful that the administration will allow our peaceful march if they have nothing to hide," he said.     Wangchuk added that a meeting of stakeholders will be held to decide the future course of action within the next couple of days.     Dorjay said they will go ahead with the march and it will be peaceful.     Wangchuk also alleged that the police administration was calling volunteers to the local police stations and threatening them.     "Our request is not to spread unrest in the name of peace. This is a very sensitive region and we always cared for the country," he added.
