Macy Gray is an American RnB soulful singer songwriter born in September 1969. Macey was actually born as 'Natalie Renée Barry McIntyre.' From Ohio USA.
Macy is a graceful soul has have blessed us all with her presence and took to the dangerous music world and came out better for it. Too many sweethearts get tortured in the music business, but Gracy kept a cool head and rose above all that nonsense, and produced soulful music for years.
Her debut album 'On How Life Is' back in 1999 defined her as the RnB angel. Her voice was the introduction to the soon to be RnB angel gone bad Amy Winehouse, which many people forget. Her sound was a more upbeat modern twist on Etta James. It sounds similar to Joss Stone and some could even suggest maybe Dido.
The song of this album 'I Try' was the game changer for Macy. She was now the soul queen and this smash hit won Song of the year at the Grammys in 2001 as well as a record of the year. A national treasure was born!
However this American goddess could not reach the summits of her first album success. Her second album did not excel expectation in the US, but to be fair went straight in at number one in the UK charts.
Her musical career began getting patchy and distorted, but Macy went onto to produced a staggering 6 albums in her career and is currently touring as a new album 'The Way' is soon to be released.
She isn't so much a chart hitting success now but more confined to a niche market and its fitted her just right. We don't want this sweetheart getting thrown around like a ball in the music business, she needs to be treated like a princess, a princess with a beautiful voice.
Live reviews
Who hasn’t heard of Macy Gray? And who doesn’t enjoy her cooly enticing vocals? Neo-soul legend Macy Gray can do more than sing though; she brings her talents to the stage with ease and finesse and is more than capable of brewing up a mysterious and intimate atmosphere in virtually any venue she enters. Gray’s sense of humour and effortless nonchalance mean that she does not struggle to hold a crowd’s attention, and her silky voice on songs such as ‘I try’ and ‘Relating to a Psycopath’ provide the audience with the dose of soul they came for. Her support band, who Gray does not forget to introduce, are an undeniably talented group of performers who provide Gray with the platform her voice so justly deserves. When a singer like Gray throws a brilliant cover of Thom Yorke’s ‘creep’ into the mix, you cannot fail to appreciate the talent that is being put on show! If you get the opportunity to see her sing in the flesh, don’t miss out!

I saw her show in Leuven, Belgium. It was a great performance, great voice control, good connection with the audience, funny, and moving. All band members are impressivly talented, and it shows during the solo's. Most of the songs are performed as creative variations on the CD-versions, sometimes with covers of other artists mixed in between, very well done!
I saw Macy Gray 17 years ago and she is still as fabulous as ever! Her voice is amazing and her quirky, fun stage presence makes her a delight to see. She did primarily older, popular songs with a few new ones and some covers mixed in...a fantastic time!
Macy Gray is an ENTERTAINER !
She engaged with her fans, and
did not disappoint. (The show started
45 minutes late, but Macy made up
for the delay). I would highly recommend
her show and am looking forward to hearing
Great venue. Great show. A dream fulfilled. Her band was on fire. She just better and better, lyrically and vocally. I do, however, wish she had performed more songs from her recent catalog and most recent cd.
My wife and I went to her concert in Prague this OCT 2022. It was not Macy Gray as we remembered her 15 years ago. It was club music, DJ set during her rest time, she spoke 70% of the time.
Disappointed.
Macy is awesome! Second time I went to see her and she's still the best. She's not only a great singer and makes everybody dance or really quiet, but I also find her funny as hell.

On How Life Is is a glimpse into the mind of a musician that has been through it all. Macy Gray is not shy about sharing her life and struggles with her fans. This album is packed full of musical gems and I like to think that each song was tailor-made for someone in particular.
If you’re looking for some tunes to get you through your day, this may just do the trick. Although the album does a fantastic job of mixing slow and fast songs, I found myself enjoying the slower songs more. This is not to say that I didn’t enjoy some of the faster tracks, but I found myself listening to those songs less often. To me, it was just an added bonus that they were included on the album.
Macy Gray is well-known for her distinctive voice and her passionate stage shows and this album provides an accurate representation of her shows.
Why Don’t You Call Me
This song is one that I found myself listening to over and over again. The lyrics are simple, but the message is delivered with so much soul and emotion. The chorus of this song will get stuck in your head for days on end. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it’s a catchy tune! It’s not uncommon for me to find myself singing along to this song as I’m driving down the road.
Do Something
The song starts off with the guitar and soon the piano joins in. Then the trumpets join in to give it that classic jazz feel. Right as you get started into the song, Macy’s voice comes in and stops you dead in your tracks.
In this song Macy is really giving it her all. I found myself listening to this song frequently during my runs. This was a great song to get me pumped up and ready for the day. The lyrics and message are powerful and let you know that you’re not alone.
This is a fast-paced song that has an R&B feel. I really like the lyrics and was able to relate to them. This was another one that I found myself listening to often during my runs. The lyrics are short and simple, but powerful nonetheless. It’s perfect for someone who needs something uplifting and positive to get through their day.
Sex-o-matic Venus Freak
This is a fast song with a very unique sound. I really enjoyed the extended instrumental part at the end of this track.
I Can’t Wait to Meetchu
This is another of my favorites, but it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s real and raw, and its lyrics are very powerful. This was a great song to play after a breakup because she is saying everything that you need to hear but are too afraid to say yourself.
The third single of the album is raw and tackles the emotionally driven topic of an abusive relationship. It’s a must listen.
I’ve Committed Murder
I’ve Committed Murder is an experimental song that offers a very different perspective. The sounds of other instruments and the way that they are mixed into this song give it this jazzy feel.
A Moment to Myself
This is a song that I found myself listening to frequently during my work day. This is a nice relaxing track that offers a glimpse into the mind of someone who has been through it all and just needs some time to herself. I could relate as well and this song really spoke to me.
Wrapping up her powerful album is The Letter. A great song to end the album with, it’s a great way to send you off with a positive message. I think that this song is powerful for anyone who needs encouragement while still being able to put their own situation into perspective.
Macy Gray’s On How Life Is is a powerful album that offers music that everyone can relate to. I think that this album will appeal to anyone who is looking for something a little different than the same old songs on the radio. Each song has its own merits and will appeal to you in some way.

I’ve always been a singer, but I was never interested in being a recording artist. It happened when my husband asked me to make a demo tape for his friend and record producer Kenny Gamble. He loved it and asked if I could write some songs with him, so we did that together for about 3 years.
Over the years, Macy Gray has sung backup vocals for several artists including Al Green, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Prince. She has also volunteered at an AIDS hospice in Los Angeles.
In her early years, Macy Gray was a backing vocalist for Al Green and Michael Jackson. She had provided background vocals for David Bowie’s song “Tonight”.
She has also recorded a duet with Prince, “Love, Sex and Money”. She was selected by Prince to sing on his 2006 album Planet Earth.
Macy Gray is known for her unique vocal rasp and the high tones in her voice which she has been described as sounding like “a human kazoo”,
Although Gray has released two albums, she has primarily been a backing singer for other artists.
Gray married Eric Benet in 1999. They have two sons whom he previously publicly referred to as “brothers.” Gray was diagnosed with progeria, a form of rapidly progressing aging, in 2000. She had the gene for progeria or Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome. It’s a condition that occurs when one of the parents has a chromosome change within the same gene altering it. She was diagnosed with the gene due to having children before the age of 30.
Gray has four sons from her first marriage. Coincidently, Eric Benet had an eight-year-old son, Ziggy (whose real name is Johnnie) from his marriage to actress Kim Fields of TV sitcom Martin when he and Gray married in 1999. Her progeria was diagnosed shortly after her marriage to Benet.

Macy Gray has put out so much great music, but there’s some albums that are even better than the others. So, what are the best Macy Gray albums? We’re glad you asked!
Highlighted with the epic song, “I Try,”. This album is chocked full of catchy and heartfelt songs, and is definitely worth the listen.
On this album, Macy shows her mastery of vocals by adding more soulful tones to her voice, along with a great mix of electric guitar and soft piano. [The idiom “master of one’s own destiny” means that you can do things for yourself.]
- Bigger, Brighter, Better
One song on this album really stands out: You Bring Me Joy. [To bring great happiness in someone’s life.]
This album isn’t quite as catchy as some of her other albums, but it’s still a great listen. It features some really beautiful songs, such as: La Di Da and True To Myself.
- The Trouble With Being Myself [EP]
This EP had only four songs on it, but they represented Macy’s talents very well and really showed Macy’s growth as an artist. We definitely recommend this album.
This album showed Macy’s change in style, and really contains some of her best music.
- The Sellout
This album is a bit different than Macy’s other music, but it’s still very good. We recommend songs such as “In The Air” and “Catch Me If You Can.”
- On How Life Is (Deluxe Edition)
This album was also nominated for a Grammy Award for “best female pop vocal performance” in 2009. “I Try” is the best song on this album by far.

At the start of 2009 and ten years into her career, Macy Gray found herself a free agent and on the verge of “The Sellout.” Sure, she sold 15 million albums, scored two Grammy Awards, two MTV awards and with “I Try,” had one of the most successful singles of all time, but after 2007’s Big , she found herself alone, with no one to answer to but herself. Big was the slickest album of her career and she considered going even further away from the true, gritty, whiskey-voice Macy, following instead of leading. In other words, selling out.
“I thought after Big flopped maybe I should do what everyone else was doing,” she says. “Go out and hire the hottest producers, the best writers, get real skinny. But none of those people called me back.”
For Gray, it was an ego-bruising wallop that left her bewildered and irritated at relationships that turned out to be more fair weather than everlasting. “I was terrified, I didn’t know what to do,” she says. “You have all these people telling you how dope you are and then they just go away.”
Chastened, Gray went back to her comfort zone, toiling in the studio with a select group of friends and musicians. A studio owner in Tarzana gave her a dirt-cheap deal on space and for months she went in and pushed herself to come up with new material. As the new songs took shape, that feeling of rejection gave way to a steely resolve to reestablish herself as one of music’s dominant singers. “When I was on my own, I was making songs that I liked,” she says. “It was my own money, I didn’t have to go play it for someone. I wasn’t someone’s employee.”
The resulting effort – aptly titled The Sellout (Concord Records) – is a return to form for Gray, perhaps her finest album to date, but one that propels her sound forward rather than looking longingly at the past. Sure, there are classic-Macy pop-soul stylings in tracks like “Lately,” but she branches out on tracks like the epic stadium rock-stomper “Kissed It” (featuring a blistering guitar solo from longtime friend Slash) or the Prince-like slow funk jam “Stalker” that wouldn’t be out of place on Sign O’ The Times .
According to Gray, many of the songs started out with a four-on-the-floor dance beat, but then, “everyone started doing it and I needed to stay true to who I am.” That shows up on the album’s first single, the breezy “Beauty In The World” which started out as a David Guetta-style house track but switched after Gray turned it into more of a rollicking peace & love sing-a-long. “You get bombarded with opinion and expectations and what other people want and you forget what you do well,” she says. “That song is what I do well.”
Gray also clearly ups her game in the lyrics department, filling out the portrait of herself as an artist. Many of her songs have her trademark wit (check out the horny banter between her and guest Bobby Brown on the steamy “Real Love”) but others are more agonizing, whether it’s the deeply confessional “On And On” or the making amends of “Still Hurts.” “I was depressed,” she admits. “I had been through two or three relationships in that time so my love life wasn’t going well. Last year was a real bummed out time.”
But leave it to her three teenage children to put things in perspective. “Beauty” was inspired by her daughter who one day Macy overheard laughing hysterically in the next room. “I was having a really bad day and I heard my daughter just cracking up in the next room,” she recalls. She has this really great laugh and I didn’t even know what she was laughing at. I thought ‘at least she’s happy.’ And I felt at least I hadn’t failed there, because my daughter’s happy.”
Despite the rejection, the uncertainty and the heartache, The Sellout is a total triumph and success. It’s a testament to Gray’s resolve and songwriting chops that the material feels so honest and authentic but yet effortless, moving seamlessly from one track to the next. There’s nothing forced, nothing that feels out of place. Fittingly, the album ends with the anthemic track, “The Comeback,” a bookend declaration of things accomplished and the hope for better things to come:
“Hey big world it’s me again/I’m coming way back to be big again.”
“I just poured my heart out,” she says. “I didn’t set out to have a theme, but when I put them all together it was a picture of my life in that time. I’m dying for people to like it.”
It’s the comeback. And The Sellout . And it proves that Gray has no intention of fading away.
