Mountain Biking in Arizona
We asked some of Arizona's most experienced athletes for their picks for the best mountain biking trails for all levels and views.
With hundreds of miles of pristine mountain biking trails in Arizona, it can be difficult to know where to start. So we went to the experts.
Meet our experts
Lars Romig ( @MountainMongo )
A life-long Verde Valley local, originally from Jerome, Lars Romig now lives, rides, advocates, adventures, works and raises his son in "Shredona" (aka, Sedona). As an advocate for sustainable mountain biking (MTB) with the Verde Valley Cyclists Coalition , he encourages riders to give back through trail work, donations, and support of businesses such as Specialized bikes and SRAM , both of which contribute to trail-building efforts and for whom Romig serves as an ambassador.
"I have also raced a fair bit in mostly downhill and enduro but also some XC," says Romig. "When traveling I use Trailforks to find the best way to ride destinations. [The site] also enables you to give back through their Trail Karma feature that donates to organizations responsible for the trail cracking a smile on your face."
You can also catch Lars with friend and fellow rider, Nate Hills, on YouTube , where he makes the occasional appearance.
Chloe Woodruff ( @chloewoodruff ) Kait Boyle ( @kait.boyle ) We also spoke with two athletes from Tempe-based Pivot Cycles : Chloe Woodruff, World Cup and Olympic cross-country racer, and Kait Boyle, endurance racer and co-founder of BackpackingRoots.org .
Says Woodruff: "In Arizona, we have trail access year-round. The Phoenix and Tucson areas are excellent for riding in the winter, while Prescott and Flagstaff offer higher-altitude options for summer. I've spent the last 15 years traveling all over the world for mountain bike competitions and still feel like there's no better place to ride than Arizona." “The geography in Arizona is so diverse that with just a few hours drive from anywhere, you can ride in an entirely different ecosystem," adds Boyle. "Pine forests, juniper-covered mesas, chaparral slopes, desert scrub… Arizona has incredible landscape diversity."
Read on to discover these cyclists' favorite mountain biking trails in Arizona. For specific trail details, such as surface type, direction and difficulty ratings, check out sites like TrailForks.com or MTBProject.com .
Best Short Singletrack Trail
Lars Romig: Little Rock Rabbit Ears Loop, a new trail in the Village of Oak Creek. The ride is intermediate with a great layout, delivering an enjoyable ride. Expect the rocks and ledges Sedona is known for. Chloe Woodruff: White Spar Trail, Prescott
Best Long Singletrack Trail
Lars: The Arizona Trail! (Also Kait's choice.) Pick your section or go full-meal deal. The Arizona Trail traverses the state from the Mexico-Arizona border north to the Utah-Arizona border and supplies numerous options from desert to alpine riding. Chloe: Black Canyon Trail, Black Canyon City (22 miles north of Phoenix ) Editor's note: The Arizona Trail's Southern Terminus has been affected by border wall construction, and as of June 2021, portions of the trail through Superior are closed to all traffic due to recent wildfire activity. For more information, visit aztrail.org .
Best Trail with Epic Views
Lars: Rainbow Rim Trail. Located west of the Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim , this amazing bit of trail contours in and out of ponderosa pines and aspens onto the rim of the Canyon with breathtaking views. It is intermediate to beginner-level with minimal elevation change. Try camping at Locust Point, but be sure to load up with good eats and drinks—this place is out there! Chloe: Ridgeline Trail, Oro Valley Kait: Arizona Trail, heading south from Picketpost
Best Trail for Riders of All Skill Levels
Lars: Schultz Creek, Flagstaff . (Kait agrees.) Located in the Coconino National Forest, the trail has great flow up and down. It rides intuitively for beginner to intermediate riders, and advanced riders will appreciate the playful feeling of the trail while descending. Schultz is a kick-off point for many different ride plans in the Flagstaff area that access Dry Lake Hills and Mount Elden. Chloe: Spence Basin Trails, Prescott. There's a little something for everyone in a small area.
Best Trail for Steep Climbs
Lars: National Trail, South Mountain Park and Preserve , Phoenix. Can you say Upduro? The trail has numerous technical ups to challenge the best of riders; in fact, many put the National Waterfall on their bucket list of uphill accomplishments. National Trail from end to end in either direction serves both great ups and downs and offers a good combination of surrounding trails. Definitely for advanced riders, so bring your fitness and tech skills. Chloe: Little Granite Mountain Trailhead to Clark Springs Trail #40, Prescott Kait: Granite Dells , Prescott
Best Trail for Steep Descents
Lars: Lemmon Drop, Santa Catalina Mountains, Tucson . If Arizona has anything comparable to Moab's Whole Enchilada, it's this. Literally dropping in from the summit of Mount Lemmon , it slopes down with nearly 10,000 feet of vertical drop. Don't think it's all downhill or easy though; there is about 3,600 feet of climbing hidden in the ride. Throughout the 31 miles, you'll test your skills with black to double black skillsets needed. Chloe: Heart Trail, Flagstaff
Best Desert Trail
Lars: Mesquite Canyon, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Waddell . This is a great winter destination that overlooks the Phoenix metro area. Expect a good amount of work as the trail is rocky and steep. It affords a beautiful cornucopia of cactus, but watch your hands as you pass by all the pokiness. An advanced skillset is needed for the number of rock gardens and descent fitness to make your way up. Chloe: 50-Year Trail, Oro Valley Kait: La Milagrosa, Tucson
Best Forested Trail
Lars: Arizona Trail from Snowbowl Road up and over to FR 418 in Flagstaff. Starting on the south end on Snowbowl Road, climb through ponderosa pines, which give way to aspens as you traverse below Arizona Snowbowl. Then descend north on narrow buff singletrack down to FR 418. Flip around and head back to descend south to the start. The southern descent is rockier and techier, but it rides oh so well. Definitely try to catch this one during the fall color change. Chloe: Arizona Trail, San Francisco Peaks section , Flagstaff Kait: Arizona Trail from Hart Prairie Road to Schultz Pass Road , Flagstaff
Best For a Smooth and Fast Ride
Lars: Bullseye Trail and Blowout Trail, Cottonwood . These are freshly built trails in the Blowout Wash trail network west of Cottonwood in the Mingus Mountain foothills. These trails afford great sightlines and a smooth finish. As you top out on the Blowout Trail the rocks become more abundant, but they're to my liking. The views looking across to Sedona with the San Francisco Peaks as a backdrop are stunning. Chloe: Ranch Badger Connector Trail, Prescott Kait: Arizona Trail in Saguaro National Park East , Tucson
Best Trail for a Technical Ride
Lars: Hangover Trail, Sedona . The big H of the triple H in Sedona. Hangover keeps you working those bike skills the whole way up and the whole way down. Rocks, steeps, exposure and technical through all those bits. I've ridden Hangover hundreds of times and I'm still ultra stoked to get it clean all the way through. The big bonus with Hangover is the views are jaw-dropping the whole way. Add in Hiline and Hogs to complete the triple. Chloe: National Trail, South Mountain Park and Preserve , Phoenix Kait: Lemmon Drop , Tucson
Most Remote Singletrack Trail
Lars: Arizona Trail from Picketpost to Kelvin, Superior . This bit is best done in late winter or early spring once the desert has bloomed. The wildflowers are amazing. The feeling of solitude, once you get back into Martinez Canyon, is prime Arizona backcountry. Start early for this one and make sure to bring some grit to get through all the pedaling. Chloe: Arizona Trail from Picketpost to Kelvin, Superior Kait: Rainbow Rim Trail, North Rim of Grand Canyon
Editor's note: As of June 2021, portions of the Arizona Trail through Superior are closed to all traffic due to recent wildfire activity.
Favorite Urban Trail
Lars: Flagstaff Urban Trail System Chloe: Geronimo Trail, Phoenix Kait: Arizona Trail through Flagstaff
Most Balanced Trail
Lars: Wolverton Mountain Trail in Prescott is rewarding and fun, but also not too technical. Earn your turn to make the climb up. Once you start descending, this well-designed trail gives you a good long descent to White Spar Road. There isn't anything super gnar on Wolverton, but it is entertaining. Link this ride with any number of loops in Prescott. Kait: Any section of the Prescott Circle Trail
Best for an Endurance Ride
Lars: Black Canyon Trail, Black Canyon City. It stretches 85 miles, and more trail is being built on the north end. Lots of great trail to stretch those legs all day long. My favorite portion is from Antelope Creek south to finish at Rock Springs Café for food, libations and pie. Chloe: Prescott Circle Trail, Prescott Kait: Black Canyon Trail, Black Canyon City
Best for Twists and Turns
Lars: McDowell Mountain's Sport Loop. Located at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Scottsdale, this sweet loop has great flow and turns zipping through the desert foothills. The corners are just great. Mind the kitty-litter-like soil, though. The trail is a popular one used in many XC races. Chloe: Juniper Gate and Vista Trails, Prescott Kait: Sticks and Stones, Flagstaff
Favorite Spot for a Post-Ride Brew or Meal
Lars: Diablo Burger in Flagstaff; Taco Guild in Phoenix; El Guero Canelo in Tucson; Park Plaza Liquor and Deli in Prescott; Belfry Brewery in Cottonwood Chloe: Seis Kitchen and Presta Coffee , both in Tucson, or Los Taquitos in Phoenix Kait: Soul Ride Bike Shop & Taproom , Prescott

While the rest of the Grand Canyon sizzles under hot summertime temperatures, the North Rim offers a delightfully cool, high-altitude escape. This tour is perfect for a July or August excursion.
One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon’s incomparable majesty sunders nearly 280-miles of Northern Arizona highlands.
Two-billion years of the earth’s history is on display here in the vermillion cliff-faces, with golden canyon walls that rise a mile into the sky. Early explorer John Wesley Powell compared it to “leaves in a great history book.”

We know this national park well, as it was one of our three original trip destinations when Escape Adventures first started out. Our guests all agree that the old Arizona and Rainbow Rim Trails that we conquer are the best ways to experience the Grand Canyon.
Concealed in big Ponderosa pine and shimmering Aspen groves, our trail through Kaibab National Forest leads to a place that few have visited: the East Rim View. From our campsite on the edge of the Kaibab Plateau, we savor extraordinary views. Trails brimming with wildflowers bring us to exhilarating hikes along the rim. Crossing over to the west side of the plateau, we camp alongside one of the most scenic mountain bike paths in the world, the Rainbow Rim Trail.
Providing gently rolling terrain of lung-expanding dimensions, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon has been held as sacred ground to outdoor enthusiasts. For trekkers and active travelers of all levels, the chance to experience this is the opportunity of a lifetime.
Day 1-2: Meet in St. George. Shuttle to Kaibab Lodge then ride singletrack to alpine East Rim camp for one night. Ride across plateau to North Timp Point overlooking Steamboat Mountain. Optional hike in afternoon. Day 3-4: Ride the Rainbow Rim singletrack. Finish the tour down to Indian Hollow. Shuttle back to St. George.
The food tastes better, the sky is certainly bigger, and your mind is clearer.
There is nothing better than rolling into camp to fresh made chips and salsa, homemade guacamole, and Dutch oven enchiladas. Then making your way to a sweet and inviting campfire, sharing your favorite anecdote or image from the day’s activities while marshmallows roast. Enjoy a small-batch, local beer before retiring to your tent. Inside: a sturdy raised cot, fluffy sleeping bag, and a plush full size pillow. Wow. You earned this. Sweet dreams.
We choose well-maintained public campgrounds with scenic vistas and comfortable arrangements. You’ll move seamlessly from one day of your trip to the next, camping outdoors and enjoying wildly healthy, delicious homemade meals.
The majority of our selected campgrounds feature indoor facilities and showers. Conversely, in more remote backcountry camping scenarios, we’ll provide portable toilets and private solar showers.
Camping gear may be rented or you may bring your own. All of our camping gear is tested and hand-chosen from top manufacturers to ensure you get a good nights’ sleep. Our camp gear package includes a tent, sleeping pad, raised cot, sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner, full size pillow, and ground tarp.

After purchase, we custom engineer our trucks, vans, and trailers by our on-staff mechanic to meet the unique needs of different tours. For example, certain trucks are specifically designed for The White Rim and The Maze, while others are designed for The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Each of our guides is required to be trained in safe vehicle operation, 4X4 driving, and basic maintenance. Our experienced guides make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, camping gear and plenty of drinking water to a remote location.

5 Stand-up Paddleboard Spots Near Scottsdale
7 Best Outdoorsy Things to Do in Scottsdale, Arizona
W hen people think about a trip to Scottsdale, Arizona, the main activities that come to mind are Spas, bougie boutique hotels , Golf, Wine Tasting , and Shopping. Outdoorsy things do in Scottsdale, on the other hand? Not so much.
It definitely wasn’t what I knew about Scottsdale before I was invited to visit there this April. So I was super excited to check out some more active and adventurous outdoor activities in Scottsdale. And boy, it did not disappoint.
So if you are looking for some more outdoorsy recreation ideas to add to your Scottsdale itinerary, keep on reading. And remember, Scottsdale is only a quick 1-hour flight from San Diego, which makes it perfect for a quick weekend getaway!
Kayaking in Scottsdale?
When I first heard about kayaking in Scottsdale, I was a bit surprised to be honest. When I thought of Scottsdale before, all I pictured was an arid, rocky desert landscape dotted with the iconic saguaro cacti. And while there is plenty of that to be found in the Sonoran Desert surrounding Scottsdale, there are plenty of places to go kayaking as well.
I went with a guided tour organized by one of my favorite stores for all things adventure-travel-outdoors: REI. They have an Adventure Center in Scottsdale and organize day tours and multi-day trips around Arizona and neighboring states with a focus on sustainable outdoor recreation such as hiking, kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, etc.
Salt River vs Saguaro Lake
I was supposed to go kayaking on the Salt River , a 200-mile-long river that meanders through Gila and Maricopa Counties. Salt River flows through Tonto National Forrest , and if you don’t go with a tour, you will need to purchase a recreational day pass. You can buy it at many local stores and even gas stations. This area is known for seeing wild horses that come to the river to drink.
Usually, the river is a slow-flowing and beginner-friendly kayaking destination. Unfortunately, due to the unusually high amount of rain that the area received this winter, the water was too dangerous for kayaking. Authorities decided to close down the river for any water activities. This rarely happens, though, so don’t let this deter you when booking your Scottsdale kayaking trip.
My tour was instantly rebooked to kayaking on Saguaro Lake instead. It is often named one of the best lakes in Arizona . And I can see why! After driving by Salt River and seeing the strong currents, I was more than happy about the switch. The conditions on the lake were perfect and it was fun to paddle along the shore. The scenery was absolutely stunning. Due to the recent rains, the desert was experiencing a super bloom and the views were simply incredible. Of course, I would have loved to see the wild horses, but I was told that they don’t come near the river when it is that dangerous either. I guess I just have to come back.
Soar High Over Scottsdale With a Hot Air Balloon
A sunrise hot air balloon ride above the Sonoran Desert was definitely a highlight of my trip to Scottsdale and it should definitely be on your list of things to do in Scottsdale. The sweeping views from the balloon are simply mesmerizing and seeing the sunrise from up there is an unforgettable experience.
I was picked up by Hot Air Expeditions at 4:15 AM (yes, it was worth getting up for!!!) and after a few more pickup stops, we drove to an empty lot on the outskirts of Scottsdale. There were about 6-7 other hot air balloons of various sizes setting up as well. It was enthralling to see the colorful balloons slowly fill with air, intermittently lid up by the big flames of the engines.
Ready for Take-Off
I met our Captain and the other passengers and we got instructions on how to get into the balloon once it was inflated. As there is no door in the hot air balloon basket, you have to climb over the 4ft-ish high basket walls. The balloon is pretty unstable at this moment, so it has to happen quickly as soon as the Captain gives you the green light.
Keep that in mind when you select your outfit for your hot air balloon ride. I did this once in a long dress, and let me put it that way… it wasn’t my most graceful moment. Speaking of outfits. If you are sensitive to heat, pick a spot close to the center and wear a hat (baseball cap, not floppy hat). The heat pushes outward, so the further away from the flame you are, the hotter it feels.
Once we were all on board, the balloon rose up quickly, drifting from the urban cityscape to the hilly desert as we watched the sunrise. What a view! The recent rains nourished the soil and painted the desert landscape in a light green, dotted with yellow patches of wildflowers and dark green cacti. Combined with the pastel-colored sky, the color scheme reminded me of a basket of Easter eggs. So pretty!
After about 1 hour, our Captain started looking for a suitable landing spot for our balloon and also accessible for our chase cars and crew. We slowly descended from about 5500ft and had a pretty soft landing.
Champagne anyone?
Once our balloon was safely secured and I had stable ground beneath my feet, we watched the support crew fold up the balloon, kind of like the master class of folding a fitted sheet. While we were distracted by the busy work of the chase crew, a long table seating 13 people was set up in the middle of the desert for our post-flight Champagne breakfast.
The feast included Champagne, cider or orange juice, a delicious quiche, apple slices, cheese, and even a homemade birthday cake thanks to one of the passenger’s birthdays. Oh, and we also received an honorary certificate for completing our first hot air balloon ride.
Whether you have done a hot air balloon ride before or not, I highly recommend you add this to your Scottsdale itinerary. What an unforgettable experience!
Wild Wild West: Horseback Riding in Scottsdale
There is a reason why the iconic Saguaro cacti and landscape around Scottsdale look like the quintessential Wild West: Many of the Western movies were filmed in the Sonoran Dessert in and around Scottsdale and have imprinted this Wild West look on us. And what better way to explore that archtypical landscape than on horseback?
My ride was scheduled for 9 AM at the MacDonald Ranch about 25 minutes outside of Scottsdale. It had been a few years since I last sat on a horse, but I always love being around these great animals. As it was Spring break, we were a pretty large group and many families with children. Each of us was assigned a horse according to our build and experience level and we saddled up, got a brief intro how to handle the horse and off we went.
Our trail ride was very beginner friendly and perfect for families with kids (must be 6 years or older, no exceptions) and people without any previous riding experience. The trail ride led us through a beautiful area known as “Valley of the Sun”. And sun there was. Plenty of it. And no shade. So don’t forget your sunscreen and a hat.
The horses were pretty docile and obviously know the trail like back of their hoof, so there isn’t much for you to do but enjoy the scenery and listen to the stories of the wranglers and guides.
If you are a more experienced rider, I recommend a private ride which will give you a bit more freedom to actually ride. Another fun option are the moonlight horseback rides, which can only be scheduled on the 4 days leading up to a full moon. Riding at night through the desert sounds absolutely amazing, doesn’t it? Now that would be a date night that would wow me!
Mountain Biking in Scottsdale
I have to admit, I am not a mountain biker, so I didn’t do this experience. But I was told by many of my guides and locals I talked to that Scottsdale is a fantastic place for mountain biking. And I can see why. The landscape in this part of Arizona is simply stunning and you have so many trails to choose from.
If you prefer to go with a group and have all the necessary equipment provided to you, I recommend the 2-3 hour Mountain Bike Tour by REI . Again, I did not do this tour, but I have loved all the other REI-led tours I have done, so I feel comfortable recommending them.
See the Desert Bloom at the Desert Botanical Garden
This Scottsdale outdoor experience is a bit slower-paced than the other ones. But if you love nature and the outdoors, you should not miss the Desert Botanical Garden . You will learn so much about the flora of the Sonoran Desert, and if you come in spring, you might get lucky and see the cacti bloom.
Don’t make my mistake and get there too late. I wanted to wait out the hot temperatures and decided to go in the late afternoon. Technically a good idea, but unfortunately, I missed the butterfly exhibit , which closes at 5 PM. It was still worth going though, and the plants at the Desert Botanical Garden were delightful.
When you visit, you can either stroll through the gardens and explore on your own, join a docent-led tour or participate in an event, such as story time for the kids, flashlight nights, Sororan sippin’, and dog days at the garden.
Explore the Sonoran Desert by ATV or Jeep
This outdoorsy activity has yet to be checked off my Scottsdale adventure bucket list, but I hope to do it next time I return. While I usually prefer non-motorized ways to explore nature, this just seems like a really fun experience. Especially the sunset tours jeep tours look like a picture-perfect outdoor adventure in the Arizona desert, don’t they?
If you prefer to drive yourself, the ATV tours might be more your jam. This tour takes you through Tonto National Forest and sounds like so much fun! It also has almost 400 5-Star reviews and participants rave about their fantastic experience in the reviews. I’ll definitely bookmark it for my next trip to Scottsdale!
Hiking in Scottsdale
If you love nature and the outdoors, you should plan at least one hike during your time in Scottsdale. The most popular hike in the Scottsdale area is by far Camelback Mountain. I haven’t done this hike, but from what I have heard it is pretty steep, crowded, and other than the view from the top, not the most exciting trail.
So I decided to do a hike with another REI hiking tour in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve instead. Due to time limits of our group, our guide suggested the moderately challenging 4.5-mile Gateway Loop Trail with an elevation gain of 721 ft. It is challenging but doable, especially if you give yourself time and bring enough water.
You don’t need a guide for this hike, as it is very well-marked, and you’ll see plenty of other hikers along the way. However, our guide was fantastic and told us many fascinating facts and stories about desert plants, living in the desert, and the dangers of this harsh environment. I highly recommend using a guide if you want to learn a bit more about the desert while you are out and about enjoying nature.
I had such a fun time exploring the outdoorsy things to do in Scottsdale and if you like to spend time in nature and love the desert, then Scottsdale is the place you have to check out!
Things to Do in Scottsdale FAQs
While May through September is most affordable, but probably not the right time to spend too much time outside in Scottsdale in the scorching heat. However, the rest of the year offers pretty much perfect weather for outdoor adventures in Scottsdale.
In any case, don’t underestimate the harsh climate. Never embark on an outdoor activity without plenty of water, sunscreen, hat, and basic emergency supplies.
I stayed in two boutique hotels in Scottsdale, the historic and fun Valley Ho and the chic and modern Mountain Shadows Resort . Both were fantastic in their own way, and I can only recommend them both. Check out the photos to get a feel for both places and stay tuned for a more in-depth review of these two hotels coming soon!
First off, I don’t have children so I am not an expert, but let me say this: It depends on the activity, the child, and how old, mature, and physically fit they are. The Desert Botanical Garden is definitely a kid-friendly activity for all ages. There was a 4-year-old kid on my kayaking tour on Saguora Lake and he seemed to have had a lot of fun.
