Dated but clean at a great price and none of the bullsh*t resort fees 👌

Convenient location to Javits Center. Clean and comfortable.

Great that it was walking distance to Times Square and the theater district. Unfortunately, street noise (people yelling, cars honking, police sirens) were very disruptive until late into the night. A good place to stay if you have hearing loss.

Location and the price and the atmosphere are very good if I have to go New York again I will boik at it again

no complaints I enjoyed my stayand plan to visit agaimn

The lobby had a strong disinfectant smell. Thankfully the room didn’t. It was small but clean. The fan in the bathroom ran the entire time which was annoying. The WiFi was slow and had a small additional change. The pool was decent. Staff was nice. Only issue was the maid attempted to come in twice before we checked out. 5-7 min walk to time square but there was a bus stop right outside that was a few stops from Time Square. Reasonably priced parking on site ($30 a day)

Excellent location. Safe location. Quiet room. Short walk to theaters, shops, and restaurants.

Great hotel, close to theaters and good food, clean and comfortable, and got a rate was a little lower than some of the other hotels near by.

Poor room conditions, the beds were not comfortable at all, the bathroom tub and sink would NOT drain. I contacted the hotel Manager, Mr. Zaleene, to inform hin about the situation and far from appologizing for the inconvenience he only said -ok I will send someone to fix it. We waited until the maintenance guy showed up at our room 505. The waiting time extended when he had to go get a part to replace it. At this point I contacted Mr. Zaleene and all he did was change our room to 609 about two hours prior to our check-out time, this was very dissapointing and unpleasant experience.

I had a graduate student who was coming to present at a conference I'm involved with. The university would reimburse the hotel cost, but he didn't have enough credit on his card to float the cost and wait for reimbursement, so I reserved it for him. He is a great student but is visually impaired, i.e. completely blind. His bus was late arriving in New York so he arrived after midnight, and the hotel claimed he was a "no-show" so they'd given his room away and made him sleep in the lobby. He sent me a text message, but I didn't wake up to see it until the next morning. I rushed over to the hotel and yelled at someone on the phone, really surprised at how they could treat a disabled person in this way. They claimed that a room "had just opened up" and got him into one after that. I helped him up the elevator into the room, where he slept for about a day to catch up on his sleep, as he was quite tired and disoriented. The room was otherwise pretty nice, but I still am upset about how poorly he was treated. He is occasionally (understandably) late for things, including my class, but he doesn't deserve such harsh treatment. I hope that Travel Inn will improve their policies for dealing with people with disabilities in the future.

We were very happy with the location of the hotel - and so relieved to have a pool to come back to on hot afternoons. We will definitely stay here again! Great for families with children.

A very good value for NY. Pretty much your typical motel/hotel type room. Clean and comfortable. Very good location for Javit's event. Not too close to the crowded and noisy Times Square, Penn Station or Bus Terminal but close enough to make it easy to get to those spots. Rooms on 42nd Street are a little noisy and you can't get high up because there are only six floors. Ask for a room off the street. Very nice staff.

This is an older facility, but is clean and comfortable. Its west side location is close to the river, convention center, and transportation hubs.

After my stay at the hotel, i realized i left a very valuable item of clothing in the room i stayed at. After i called them the first day they told me to call back tomorrow to get in touch with the lost and found which is what i did. I left a voicemail and after 3 days i was so fed up i called and spoke to the front staff about not returning my call and about my important item i needed back. After the lady didnt understand me when i kept saying a female bodysuit and the exact description, room number and date she kept saying no we do not have a male suit. By the time i returned to the hotel on my last day in ny to physically find my bodysuit, the staff told me the lost and found was closed and couldnt do anything about it.

The room was more than adequate, clean and fresh. The lobby was very attractively decorated for Christmas. The staff was pleasant and courteous. HOWEVER they lack any sort of food service and that is too bad.

Way too hot in the room, furnace but no AC unit. Shower and sink leaked. Dirty Qtips behind the tv stand. Front desk clerks not very friendly.

This Hotel was built for the New York World's Fair in 1964. It's different because it offers on site parking in their garage! Have seen two TV shows shot there - most recently The Blacklist, and years ago in an Law & Order re-run. While it's kind of beat up and shows it's age, the Hotel seems to be kept up pretty good. An old friend that I knew that attended the same trade show as me at the Javits Convention Center, recommended it to me originally, and I have always gone back.

We were very surprised that time square was just a 10 min walk up the street. Hotel is one of the few that has their own parking garage and only 23 a day. Nice litlle diner right next door, good breakfast. Overall very happy with our trip

Travel Inn Hotel New York

Midtown West, New York City, New York, United States

  • Full Review
  • Convenient location near Times Square and most major subway lines
  • Spacious rooms feature flat-screen TVs; some have microwaves and mini-fridges
  • Outdoor pool open seasonally
  • Small on-site business and fitness centers
  • Dated decor throughout property
  • No free Wi-Fi
  • No on-site restaurant or bar
  • No coffeemakers in rooms
  • Pool has limited hours
  • No free parking

Bottom Line

The Travel Inn is a solid budget option near Times Square. The decor and amenities are basic, though the hotel does feature on-site business and fitness centers, and an outdoor pool that is open seasonally. The 160-room property feels dated, but is in the process of being renovated. Wi-Fi also requires a daily fee. Visitors looking to stay in this area of Midtown West should check Yotel for more facilities (on-site restaurant, massive rooftop terrace) and free Wi-Fi, at similar price points.

Fitness Center

Oyster hotel review, a dated but tidy property near times square.

Stuffed leather couches and dark wood paneling in the lobby are just some of the details that make the hotel look dated. The hotel's common areas have seen better days, and the rooms are also worn. Some of the rooms overlook busy street traffic, while the inner rooms open onto the outdoor courtyard for a motel-like feel.

On a charmless block, a 15-minute walk from Times Square

The Travel Inn is located on a busy but bland stretch of 42nd Street on Manhattan's West Side. The hotel is three long avenue blocks from Times Square -- far away enough to avoid insane crowds, but within walking distance of more than 10 major subway lines -- and several blocks south of the heart of Hell's Kitchen, a lively neighborhood with restaurants and bars. Hudson River Park is also close by, and offers sightseeing cruises and seasonal activities like bike rentals.

  • 8-minute walk to Port Authority Bus Terminal
  • 11-minute walk to Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
  • 13-minute walk to Jacob K. Javits Convention Center
  • 16-minute walk to the Theater District
  • 20-minute walk to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden

Rooms at the Travel Inn are functional and spacious, but dated

The majority of rooms at the Travel Inn feature basic furniture and bland decor. The flat-screen TVs are a notable bonus. Rooms facing the central courtyard and on the upper floors are less susceptible to noise from the street and the subway running underground. Avoid the North Tower, which requires guests to walk through a parking garage to get to the elevator. The hotel is in the middle of a renovation, and several rooms have been upgraded to a brighter, more modern look. New furniture, impressive bathrooms, and better amenities (including iPod docking stations, microwaves, and mini-fridges) make these rooms more desirable. All rooms feature Ecossential toiletries, hairdryers, and ironing facilities.

On-site amenities are few, but the outdoor pool is a nice perk

The Travel Inn doesn't have a ton of amenities, but that helps keep rates low for travelers mostly interested in a good-value (and well-located) place to crash. A large supervised pool in the hotel's open-air courtyard is open seasonally and is a rare find for the price. The hotel does have a business and a fitness center, but they're small and sad-looking with few machines and computer stations respectively. There is no on-site restaurant or bar, though there is a diner next door. A parking garage next door charges a moderate daily fee.

Perfect,Perfect,Perfect!!!”

Our stay at The Travel Inn was perfect! From the price of room and the low cost of parking to the very helpful staff...we couldn't of asked for any more for our first time in New York. Subway couple blocks away, Times Square very close, and a friendly and good diner right next door. We had street facing room and barely heard a thing. Hotel room, lobby and pool very clean. One more great thing about The Travel Inn...check out is at 12:00 but they let you keep your car ther until 3:00. A+++

Lovely hotel and great location”

Honestly, I wasn't to thrilled about staying at Travel Inn at first. But once my daughter and I got there, we felt right at home. The room is spacious and there's a microwave, refrigerator and lots of electric plug-ins. The bathroom is a tad small, but it's not an issue. The location, for us, is perfect. There's a Chinese food restaurant at the end of the street, as well as a laundry service (by the pound), and a nice little convenience store. Across the street from the hotel is also a CVS. And right next to the hotel is a deli that opens until late in the afternoon. You don't have to look farther for a hearty meal or breakfast. Also, it's really close to Times Square and you won't have any problem finding a place to eat. The only downside is the front desk staff can be a bit unfriendly, though they try. I don't know if they were stressed out because of the upcoming Marathon or whatnot, but I asked to extend my stay several times and they didn't seem too happy to give me information and alternatives. The operator is really nice, though. She really helped us find an alternative to stay at the hotel for a few more days after Sandy hit NY because our flight had been cancelled. On my next trip, I'd definitely stay here again.

Close to great eating and subway.”

The room was clean, comfortable, and had a microwave and refrigerator. Grocery store one block up. Our room was on the north side. The train runs right by, but the noise did not bother us. It is very close to to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Subway. Hell's Kitchen is one block away, with great dining selection. We walked to the theater district and Time Square after we discovered that is was only about four to five blocks away. We took the bus and then the subway to and from the airport. It was only $2.50 each and easy to do. Would only suggest doing that if bringing one small piece of luggage. We would stay at The Travel Inn again if returning to NYC.

Nice hotel with nice rooms”

We had 4 people in a double double room, and even with all our stuff, it did not feel cramped. The room was clean and well-decorated and the beds were comfortable. The location was on the famous 42nd street of New York City, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle of 7th avenue to be quiet and restful. We definitely recommend this hotel!

Nice hotel - good locationi”

Nice stay. Some challenges, but they were easily resolved with a kind helpful staff. The wifi were better in the main-building (same as reception was located). Rather special is that you eat your breakfast and lunch at the nearest neighbour - which also is administered by Travel Inn - together with visitors coming in from street. But it worked - and have a nice and friendly staff. Overall we will not hesitate to bill a new stay in Travel Inn, when we come back to NYC in the future Thank you for a pleasent stay Pleasent couple from Faroe Islands

new york travel inn

Whatever it is you're into, you'll find there's more to do in New York than you'll have time.

Check out the views from the top of the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, or One World Observatory. Take yourself on a museum crawl, starting at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on the northeastern edge of Central Park. Then, make your way north several blocks to the Guggenheim Museum and eventually to the Museum of the City of New York, one of the best places to learn about the Big Apple's history.

Go to Chinatown for dim sum and to Little Italy for cannoli. Head to a jazz club in Harlem, check out the independent artist galleries that dot Chelsea, shop along Fifth Avenue, and pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty.

You could spend an entire day in Central Park alone, checking out its zoo, carousel, lakes, and ice rink. A number of gardens and meadows make for excellent people-watching and host impromptu musical performances on nice days. Traveling in the summer? Make sure to check the schedule for Shakespeare in the Park.

Prefer sports, movies, and live music? See the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, the New York Mets at Citi Field, or the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Track down sites from your favorite movies and TV shows. Seinfeld , Sex and the City , "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle," "Serendipity," and "Home Alone 2" are just a small fraction of what's been filmed here.

New York is a city filled with attractions, but some of its most interesting experiences are sure to be the ones you accidentally stumble upon on the way to somewhere else. Whatever it is you're looking for, you can find it in New York. Just don't try to do everything in one trip.

Eastern Standard Time

Best Time to Go

New York is a city that's always celebrating something, and summer is one of the best times to visit. Outdoor concert season is in full swing. Free movies and theatrical performances fill the city's parks, street vendors are everywhere, and street fairs abound. But subway platforms can get steamy, lines can get long, and temperatures can soar among the city's high-rises. If this sounds like misery, visit between Thanksgiving and the New Year, when temperatures are cooler and department store windows are decked out for the holidays. During this time, Manhattan's three major outdoor ice rinks are open, a giant Christmas tree marks Rockefeller Center, and holiday light shows are more elaborate than anything you could ever imagine.

Things to Know

New York is a city made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Most tourist attractions are in Manhattan, with a few scattered across Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.

Driving in Manhattan is unnecessary. The city has an extensive public transit system, making it easy to get just about anywhere by subway, bus, cab, and foot. Uber and Lyft are plentiful, while parking can be both a miserable and expensive experience. Meanwhile, the subway is open 24/7.

New York is a city that moves fast. Step aside to look at your phone, and remember to stand on the right side of the escalator so hurried commuters can walk on the left.

Times Square characters can be pushy. Tipping is at your discretion.

How to Get Around

Trains: The New York City subway is one of the most extensive public transit systems in the world. It connects Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, and runs on Staten Island. Each ride costs $2.75. A seven-day pass is available for $33 and covers both trains and buses.

Buses: A network of buses offers easy access to the rare spots not served by nearby train stations and to New York's LaGuardia Airport. Individual bus rides cost $2.75. Seven-day transit passes cost $33 and cover trains and buses. While buses can be convenient, traffic can sometimes make them easy to outwalk.

Ferries: One of the best ways to hop among New York's boroughs in good weather is a ferry. Ferries connect Queens, the western coast of Brooklyn, the eastern side of Manhattan, and Staten Island. Rides are $2.75 each. Subway and bus passes aren't accepted on New York ferries. The Staten Island Ferry is free.

Taxis: Cabs are all over Manhattan, but a little harder to find in parts of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Green cabs offer service in northern Manhattan and the outer boroughs. To hail a cab, look for one that has its light on and raise your arm. All New York cabs are metered and required to accept credit cards.

Rideshare: Uber and Lyft are all over New York and offer similar pricing. Rideshare can be the best way to travel in parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Visitors at Glenmere also have access to four fine dining venues and local activities such as historic sightseeing and wine tasting at the award-winning Brotherhood Winery, widely considered the oldest winery in the U.S. Note that Glenmere Mansion is an adults-only resort . Many previous guests praise Glenmere, noting that the food is exceptionally good.

Mohonk Mountain House: New Paltz

Perhaps the grandest of all the mansions and castles in New York (and the U.S.) is Mohonk Mountain House. Founded in 1869, the resort can be found tucked into the Hudson Valley, less than 100 miles from New York City.

Another major draw? It's one of few all-inclusive resorts in the U.S. Rates include three farm-to-table meals daily plus afternoon tea and cookies; a roster of activities, spanning water sports on Lake Mohonk to 85 scenic miles of hiking trails; wellness offerings such as a spa and fitness classes; nightly entertainment including live music and seasonal campfires; and, for families, additional kid-specific activities. Couples can choose Victorian-style guest room or suite accommodations with wood-burning fireplaces in the Mountain House, or opt to stay in the more private Grove Lodge.

While this National Historic Landmark resort is pricey, previous guests agree the cost is well worth the experience.

While the Catskills may always be synonymous with "Dirty Dancing," the region looks a bit different than it did when Frances "Baby" Houseman and Johnny Castle fell in love here. A boom in boutique lodging options is once again attracting travelers to an area that saw a period of decline from the 1970s until recent years.

Modern-day Babys and Johnnys can now go glamping at AutoCamp Catskills; spend the night at Wylder Windham, a full-service boutique hotel next to Windham Mountain Resort; relax in rustic-luxe rooms with soaking tubs at Urban Cowboy Lodge; tuck into cozy cabins at Eastwind Windham, which also features standalone saunas in the woods; or even spend the night at a revamped retro motel such as the Starlite Motel, with its outdoor pool. Throughout the region couples will also find breweries and cideries, U-pick farms, and (of course) the outdoor adventures that first put the Catskills on the map: skiing, hiking, biking and more.

The Niagara Falls illuminated at night.

Courtesy of Niagara Falls USA

Known as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," Niagara Falls is the original romantic getaway in New York. Couples in search of romance have been visiting the region since the 1800s, particularly after the Erie Canal opened. Connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River, the canal – along with railroad expansions – made Niagara Falls a more accessible vacation destination for honeymooners.

Today, couples who want to experience the beauty of this natural wonder can hike or bike scenic trails at Niagara Falls State Park. You and your sweetheart can also watch a nightly illumination of the falls from a cozy blanket in the park, which is an especially colorful spectacle during Pride Month. Of course, there are plenty of guided tours in Niagara Falls , including the iconic Maid of the Mist (where Pam and Jim said their vows).

The New York side of Niagara Falls is home to a large wine region, with the Niagara Wine Trail offering more than a dozen wineries. For romantic accommodations, look to The Giacomo in the heart of downtown. Built in 1929 as the United Office Building, The Giacomo is now a luxury boutique hotel with architecture that blends art deco and Mayan Revival styles. In-room amenities include a nightly cookie delivery and panoramic views; select rooms have whirlpool baths and fireplaces. Duos can grab cocktails at the Giacomo Lounge before taking advantage of the "Sweetheart Package," complete with a bottle of Champagne, souvenir glasses, chocolate truffles and a rose petal display.

While the Hamptons remains an elite vacation spot on Long Island, the North Fork has been giving that resort destination a run for its money – especially in recent years. Thanks to an ideal terroir for growing grapes, Long Island has an established wine scene, with most of the vineyards and wineries located on the North Fork. You'll find many of the region's wineries along Route 25 (the main thoroughfare); guided wine tours with a personal driver are a popular way to taste the region's signature wines, which include merlot, cabernet franc and chardonnay. In June, many of the wineries celebrate Pride Month.

The area is also dotted with U-pick farms and farmers markets, some of which sell another local delicacy: oysters. For an essential North Fork experience, pair your oysters with wine at places such as Terra Vite North Fork Winery & Vineyard and Peconic Bay Vineyards – the latter offers oyster happy hours seasonally.

Couples can relax by the seaside in Orient Beach State Park, where beachgoers enjoy kayaking, windsurfing, fishing and other opportunities for outdoor recreation. Round out your romantic getaway in Long Island with a game of golf and some upscale dining, then check into one of the North Fork's boutique hotels or bed-and-breakfasts .

Often considered New York City's sixth borough, Westchester County is perfect for a weekend getaway with your partner. Just north of Manhattan, set between the Hudson River and Long Island Sound, Westchester County offers a little bit of everything: quaint river towns (including the legendary Sleepy Hollow), beaches, historic landmarks, seasonal events, and hiking and biking trails galore. You can also traverse the Westchester Farm Trail, which encompasses 13 farms and orchards with markets, U-pick options and more.

Romantic accommodations in Westchester County include the Bedford Post Inn, a Relais & Châteaux property with just eight rooms (many with fireplaces) and two highly rated farm-to-table restaurants. The Abbey Inn and Spa, which overlooks the Hudson River, is another lovely lodging option: Once a convent, the stunning building now houses luxurious guest rooms and suites, a restaurant, and a full-service spa where you and your lover can unwind with a lava stone couples massage.

Whiteface Lodge: Lake Placid

It doesn't get more romantic than Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid. The AAA Four Diamond resort boasts a variety of rustic-luxe suites (including one-bedroom options), most with cast-iron fireplaces, jetted tubs, and patios or balconies. Romantic on-site amenities and activities include evening drinks under the stars in a private lean-to; a spa with hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas; ice skating in the winter; and fine dining at Kanu, where guests say the atmosphere alone is worth a dinner reservation.

A two-time host of the Winter Olympics, Lake Placid offers a variety of Olympics-inspired museums and experiences, with unique winter activities including bobsledding at Mount Van Hoevenberg and dog-sledding on frozen Mirror Lake. Of course, there's also skiing, snowboarding and the like at Whiteface Mountain, one of the best ski resorts in New York . While you're visiting, take time for a romantic stroll along Lake Placid's Main Street, which looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. Previous guests adore Whiteface Lodge, noting that it's ideal for both couples and families.

The Sagamore Resort: Bolton Landing

There are plenty of vacation rentals on Lake George, but if you're looking for the ultimate escape with your partner, book a stay at The Sagamore Resort (part of the Opal Collection). Located on a 70-acre private island in the Adirondacks, the hotel features award-winning dining, an 18-hole golf course, a full-service spa, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Especially unique is the annual Glacier Ice Bar & Lounge, where 18,000 pounds of crystal-clear ice are transformed to create an Antarctic setting overlooking Lake George.

If you're seeking a private outdoor space and/or fireplace, a spacious option is a two-bedroom condo (or perhaps a four-room condo or house if you're traveling with other couples). Otherwise, you'll be perfectly comfortable in a lodge room or suite, some of which also come with fireplaces or balconies. Previous guests say this historic resort – first opened in 1883 and even considered by some to be a haunted hotel – is absolutely majestic.

Troutbeck: Amenia

Tuck into Troutbeck, a historic estate hotel whose most famous guests include Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Located in the Hudson Valley, the hotel features field-to-fork dining led by Michelin-starred chef Gabe McMackin, as well as The Barns, a wellness facility featuring yoga, meditation and Kinesoma classes (dance-based movement). The wellness offerings also include services such as acupuncture and massages. An outdoor swimming pool and grill, hammock and picnic sites, tennis courts, and free bike rentals complement the serene setting.

For an especially romantic lodging option, book the Dunham Suite, named for its lovely view of the nearby creek. The suite features a king-size, four-poster bed; a gas fireplace; a wet bar with a minifridge; heated bathroom flooring; and a standalone soaking tub and separate rain shower. Recent guests say they enjoyed the beauty and history of this hotel from the 1700s.

The 14 Best New Hotels in New York City

The city so nice they named it twice is full of desirable lodgings.

Given the length of the to-do list, some travelers think that where they stay while in town doesn’t matter. We disagree. Just because you won’t spend the bulk of your time lounging about in your hotel robe doesn’t mean you don't need a plush option to coddle you after an afternoon spent zipping from sight to sight or a long night out on the tiles. A big bed, crisp linens, and a killer lobby bar can make a visit, after all.

New York City is a town obsessed with the new. (It’s even right there in the name: New York City.) And the past few years have seen an influx of hotels that are as much the destination as the line items on any itinerary. From the uber-luxe to the shockingly affordable, here are our fourteen favorite new hotels in New York City.

The Fifth Avenue Hotel leans into what New Yorkers with good taste who live in small spaces know is the secret to making their apartments feel luxurious: Love every single piece of furniture, adore every square inch. Nothing is wasted. If you’re lucky, you’ll get something like the rooms and hallways of the Fifth Avenue Hotel. It’s like rich-aunt maximalism: Missoni-style upholstered chairs and couches, an armoire that’s actually a giant bar adorned with dragons and birds. The wallpaper looks as though it’s hand-painted. Lots of tapestries and tufted pink walls. Unlike in many N.Y.C. apartments, you’ll get a great night’s sleep here—the room feels pin-drop quiet, and the bathrooms are serene marble white. This is New York, but you might not leave the hotel. There’s in-room martini service, and downstairs is one of the city’s best new restaurants, the old-school-luxe Café Carmellini, as well as the Portrait Bar, home to some of the town’s best martinis (outside of your room). Rooms from $895 —Kevin Sintumuang

MOXY WILLIAMSBURG

e

Book on Marriott Book on Expedia

If you want to understand the kind of vibe that the Moxy Williamsburg tries to channel, just take a look at the walls on the way to your compact yet functional room: monkeys with cocktails and bottles of vodka. This hotel is in Williamsburg, after all, one of the best bar neighborhoods in New York, and located right near the Williamsburg Bridge, which leads to the Lower East Side, the other N.Y.C. hood that can make for a very big night out. That said, you would do very well at the hotel itself. There are three restaurant/bars conceived by Bar Lab, the folks behind the Broken Shaker bars, as well as Mesiba, a Levantine restaurant on the ground floor. Mesiba means “party” in Hebrew; as with everything else at the Moxy, they certainly got the memo. Rooms from $200 —K.S.

Hotels where you pay by the month can be dicier than a Vegas craps table. But Maison Hudson is the polar opposite. Located on the banks of the Hudson and at the fringe of the West Village, the property straddles a blurry line between ultra-luxurious hotel and supremely plush apartment. The minimum stay is a month, and the price starts at thirty g’s. Sounds absurdly high? Maybe. But when suites in N.Y.C. go for several thousand dollars per night, a stay at Maison Hudson can feel kind of like a good deal over time. Boy math! Okay, so say you hit it big on a stock investment/crypto/inheritance and want to live like a 0.01 percenter in New York’s coolest neighborhood. Here’s what you get: a chic, tastefully decorated, ridiculously massive thousand-square-foot living space, complete with heated bathroom floors, automatic shades, a fully stocked kitchen, and an in-unit washer/dryer. The concierge—who is really like your own personal assistant—will get you anything you could possibly desire. (Think concert tickets, a rare bottle of wine, an endangered animal to eat for dinner—kidding!) There’s an in-house spa that offers massages, facials , and antiaging treatments in a Zen-like setting. Marius, the French-inspired restaurant helmed by Michelin-star chef Sébastien Sanjou, feels intimate with only a handful of tables. While the eatery is open to the public, don’t worry: Maison Hudson guests get first priority for seatings, natch. Rooms from $32,500 per month —Daniel Dumas

ARLO WILLIAMSBURG

e

Book on Tripadvisor Book on Expedia

The brand’s three Manhattan locations have long been the smart traveler’s pick for affordable city lodging, and now, like so many city people, the Arlo group has made the jump into Brooklyn. On the site of the former Hotel Williamsburg, the most eye-catching of the luxury hotels to hit the hip hood in the 2010s, Arlo Williamsburg is the exact right home base for a New York City getaway. Brooklyn buzzes outside each room’s floor-to-ceiling windows, while a rooftop pool and a bar and event space inside the Arlo’s landmark water tower offer views of the full sweep of Manhattan’s skyline. It seems so close you could touch it, but with all of Billyburg’s bars, restaurants, shops, and general people-watching just steps from the front door, you may decide to skip the quick trip on the L and stay local. The company’s focus on art and interesting programming has survived the trip across the river. And out here you can stand in the middle of your room, extend both arms, and not touch a wall. Try that in Manhattan. Rooms from $400 —Dave Holmes

NINE ORCHARD

nine orchard

Book on Booking.com

On one end of the travel-fantasy spectrum, there is the blissed-out, blue-skies-and-beaches vacation. The stuff postcards are made of. Nothing wrong with seeking that. Toward the other end is the kind where you imagine yourself as a neighborhood local. You tap into the rhythm of the vibrant daily life in the blocks around you and feel as if you’ve merged with a hipper, alternate-universe version of yourself. That’s what Nine Orchard will do for you.

We know the “hotels for locals” shtick, where there’s a lobby filled with folks on laptops. This is not that. Nine Orchard is more about creating the fantasy of residence. It starts with your room number. 4L, 3G, 8A. You might think you’ve stepped into someone’s apartment. Each room has an appreciation for the analog—the handmade ceramic lamps, the paintings from local artists, the wooden Ojas speakers that tune in to stations curated by DJ Stretch Armstrong and Devon Turnbull. You’ll want to hole up and write a memoir here.

Of course, the hotel’s unlikely location is what makes the neighborhood-local fantasy really work. Inhabiting the Jarmulowsky Bank building, a beaux arts landmark at the junction of the Lower East Side and Chinatown, Nine Orchard is at the heart of an area (often referred to as Dimes Square) that has become a hotbed for a certain type of fashion/media/art/skate cool kid. But you don’t need to subscribe to that ethos to take in the most breezily cool spots in N.Y.C.: wine bars like Parcelle and Le Dive, Scarr’s Pizza for quick eats, and the Chinatown BYOB classic Wu’s Wonton King. And Nine Orchard’s own Swan Room and Corner Bar, from chef and restaurateur Ignacio Mattos, are destinations in their own right, where everyone, no matter where they’re from, seems to have the look of a local celebrity who is chill about being a local celebrity. Maybe that’s the real fantasy that Nine Orchard delivers. Rooms from approx. $500 —K.S.

THE RITZ-CARLTON NOMAD

the ritz carlton nomad

Book on Booking.com Book on Tripadvisor

Lying in a cloudlike king bed, facing downtown, with One World Trade Center glimmering in the distance, I watched the sunset, thirty-four stories in the sky, and thought, What a thing to experience in a city where you thought you’d seen it all. As a gleaming, fifty-story glass tower, the Ritz-Carlton New York NoMad offers that Ritz-Carlton tranquility, but the bars and restaurants here have made it an unlikely nightlife destination in a decidedly non-touristy hood. You’ll have a sanctuary in your room with a tub—rare in N.Y.C.—but there’s also a buzzy lobby bar and the José Andrés rooftop lounge Nubeluz. It’s an uncommon New York hotel combo, where you can be serene or all-out energetic. Rooms from approx. $1,500 —K.S.

THE HOTEL CHELSEA

hotel chelsea

You can’t talk about the Hotel Chelsea without checking off the names of its famous tenants and guests. The building, finished in 1884, was conceived as a kind of commune for musicians and novelists and has had a bohemian artistic energy since then. Mark Twain, Stanley Kubrick, Patti Smith, Andy Warhol, and Jimi Hendrix are just some of the notable folks who have graced this Queen Anne–style building over the past century. Today it might lack a raucous clientele, but that’s all for a better night’s sleep. Expect laid-back service, marble-and-brass bathrooms, animal-print furniture. From the pitch-perfect El Quijote, a Spanish restaurant that opened in 1930, to the iconic stained-glass windows and wrought-iron balconies, checking into the Chelsea feels like entering a time warp. Rooms from approx. $300 —K.S.

THE WALL STREET HOTEL

wall street hotel

Want to see something beautiful? Come stand on the corner of Wall Street and Water in Lower Manhattan and stare at this gorgeous mass of concrete. The Paspaley family, Australians who were pioneers in the pearl industry, lovingly and painstakingly brought the beaux arts facade of the Wall Street Hotel to life over the course of several years. And what’s inside is even better. Spacious suites (for Manhattan!), oversize bathrooms (see previous parenthetical), a chic-meets-fun bar that draws locals and guests, plus an absolutely killer in-house French brasserie—this place doesn’t miss. Rooms from $465 —Madison Vain

the ned

You’ll quickly lose track of how many food and beverage options there are at the iconic London brand’s NoMad location. Rooftop bar, lobby bar, library (with bar service), a trendy Italian spot, a private table in a water tower, and a formal dining room for table-side service. All have their own vibe and are worthy of inspection, but only some are available to hotel guests. The rest are reserved for Ned members. But worry not; there’s plenty of fun to be had for those who book here. Rooms from $375 —M.V.

HOTEL BARRIÈRE FOUQUET’S

hotel barrier fouquets

The committed traveler, it stands to reason, always looks for authentic local color. So a stay in New York’s TriBeCa neighborhood should naturally involve a few nights in a soaring, modernist hymn to the twenty-four-hour possibilities of twenty-first-century New York. Right? Non . Hotel Barrière Fouquet’s, which opened recently on Greenwich Street, whiffs unmistakably and quite charmingly of Paris. For more than a hundred years, Fouquet’s existed as one of the grandest of all Parisian café-restaurants. In 2006, it entered the hotel business when it was reopened with more than one hundred luxury rooms added by the Barrière Group above and around the original café. The New York hotel is the first U.S. venture of the group, which maintains properties in some of the most chichi resorts in Europe. Its inherent Frenchness is both obvious and lightly done. The staff offer a singsongy “Bonjour” when you pass them in the corridor. In the rooms, the furnishings are postmodern, curvy takes on deco, and the toile-de-Jouy-style wallpaper is about as French as you can get in room decor, until you stand up close and realize it’s actually composed entirely of cartoony New York street scenes. With a relatively low room count—just ninety-seven in total, including a two-story Grand Appartement Terrasse—the hotel feels quiet and intimate. There’s just a single low-key bar, the Brasserie Fouquet’s New York, and the Par Ici Café, which doubles as the breakfast spot and where, reassuringly, the prices have been imported from Paris along with the style. Rooms from $900 —Nick Sullivan

The purpose-built, brutalist structure of concrete and wood is home to a lobby with a buzzing bar anchoring all of the loungy furniture, where folks Zoom on laptops by day and old-fashioneds are being stirred come nightfall. Each month features different DJs spinning soul, and the Atrium on the second floor often hosts poetry readings and film screenings. The woodshop-chic rooms aren’t bad either. Rooms from $199 —Omar Mamoon

CASA CIPRIANI

casa cipriani

Welcome to la dolce vita, a place where Loro Piana cashmere lines the walls of your presidential suite, where custom scents fill the air, where fireplaces roar and Bellinis are handed out by waiters in white jackets. The first of several membership clubs/boutique hotels planned by Italian hospitality’s best-known ambassadors, Casa Cipriani—located on South Street in Lower Manhattan—has had glitzy New Yorkers jockeying for access ever since it opened in 2022. The pitch was a gamble (there’s a dress code, and prices are astronomical), but it turns out that a lot of luxury feels just right these days. Rooms from approx. $750 —M.V.

PENDRY MANHATTAN WEST

pendry manhattan west

Beyond the modern extension of Penn Station, you’ll come across an undulating tower seemingly conjured out of nowhere in an area that was, just a few years ago, a kind of no-man’s-land. For the trek across Ninth Avenue, the Pendry epitomizes Cali-luxe: plush, earth-toned rooms where curved windows create nooks to dwell in and admire the new urban vista. Downstairs, it’s time for a mini bar crawl. Bar Pendry is a gold-leaf-adorned jewel box for a more clandestine drink, and Chez Zou is like a belle-epoque garden complete with deft cocktails and a secret cheeseburger. Rooms from $725 —K.S.

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels in the United States. In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in the United States includes 11 Three Key hotels, 33 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Here’s everything you need to know . Or, head below to look at all the Keys.

Highlights of the United States 2024 Key Hotel List

The Aman New York — New York, New York

The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Click the links here to explore the whirl of colors and collage of art that define the Crosby Street (Soho) and the Whitby Hotel (Midtown). Also read: Every Three Key Hotel in Paris

The Georgian — Santa Monica, California

Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

The Chicago Athletic Association — Chicago, Illinois

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels. Four New York City hotels receive top honor on first ever Michelin Keys Guide

The michelin guide features the top u.s. hotels in 2024., by julia elbaba • published april 25, 2024 • updated on april 25, 2024 at 11:48 am.

Many of the best hotels in the United States are located right in New York City, according to the Michelin Guide.

The prestigious list for 2024 recognized four NYC hotels to receive Three Keys, including Aman New York (Midtown), Casa Cipriani New York (the Financial District), Crosby Street Hotel, Firmdale Hotels (Soho) and The Whitby Hotel, Firmdale Hotels (Midtown).

The guide states that Aman New York and Casa Cipriani utilize "glamorous Beaux Arts buildings" with the Midtown site featuring a gold-crowned skyscraper, while the Financial District spot highlights a high-end ferry terminal. Each is considered "an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life."

The Firmdale hotels, on the other hand, are "a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp."

These standout selections are vetted based on five categories meant to enhance a traveler's experience. The categories are architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting.

The Three Keys list is rounded out with various hotels in California.

Are Disposable Hotel Slippers the Next Plastic Straws?

Slippers supplied by hotels — flimsy models usually made of plastic and fabric — are the next single-use item in the cross hairs of sustainability activists.

A factory worker in a blue uniform is crouched beside a large plastic bag of disposable hotel slippers.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

In November, managers at the Arenas del Mar resort near Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica, challenged employees to come up with ways to operate more sustainably. The maintenance crew suggested electric locks on guest room doors. The food and beverage department proposed making jams from fruit peels. And the housekeepers advised: Ditch the slippers.

“It didn’t make sense because you use them once and throw them out,” said Hans Pfister, the president and co-founder of Cayuga Collection , the hotel group that manages the resort, which took housekeeping’s advice. “It’s very wasteful.”

Like plastic straws and mini bottles of shampoo, disposable slippers — flimsy models usually made of plastic and fabric, and often found bedside at turndown or bagged in hotel closets — are the next single-use item in the cross hairs of sustainability activists.

“Anything single-use is problematic,” wrote Willy Legrand, a sustainable hospitality expert and a professor at the IU International University of Applied Sciences in Bad Honnef, Germany, in an email. He cited the large footprint of a small slipper once you factor in production, shipping and waste. Single-use slippers, he said, “feel out of place and out of touch.”

Nina Boys, the vice president of sustainability for Beyond Green , a group of hotels vetted for their sustainability practices, called slippers “low-hanging fruit” in the fight against plastic.

Slippers as status symbols

While plastic straws can be easily replaced with paper versions and small shampoo bottles by larger dispensers, subbing for slippers is more complicated based not just on materials but cultural expectations and perceptions of luxury.

Providing slippers in hotels is rooted in the Asian tradition of removing your shoes indoors, said Diana Verde Nieto, a sustainability expert and the author of “ Reimagining Luxury .”

“As hotels started to cater to international guests, particularly those from Asia, the provision of slippers became a way to accommodate and respect these cultural norms,” Ms. Verde Nieto wrote in an email. She added that the comfort and hygiene associated with slippers has become a universal luxury standard today.

Offering slippers also helps hotels earn status ratings from travel organizations like AAA or the European Union’s Hotelstars .

Some resorts have found it easier to address sustainability through food waste and community engagement than footwear. Winvian , the boutique resort with 18 cottages and one suite on 113 acres in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills, grows about 70 percent of its produce on the property and built a cottage from the wood cleared at the site. Guests receive reusable sandals in the spa, but in the rooms, visitors will find plusher designs that they are encouraged to take home and reuse; about half do and the rest are discarded.

“The problem is, it’s one of those things that people have come to expect,” said Heather Smith Winkelmann, the managing director of the resort.

Ivan Bauza is the director of sales and marketing at the Setai , a luxury hotel in Miami Beach. “Our guests are very demanding and expect everything brand-new,” he said, adding that amenities like full-size bottles of shampoo and slippers that are intended for guests to take home — occasionally including trendy models from the boutique brand Brunch — “shows the luxury aspect” of hospitality.

‘Rethinking’ slippers

The waste associated with disposable slippers is sizable, according to Mr. Legrand of IU, who calculated that high-end hotels in the United States with an average occupancy of 63 percent might discard more than 10 million pairs of slippers a month.

In a 2018 study, Chekitan S. Dev, a professor in the hospitality school at Cornell University, tracked 50 hotel amenities to determine how much they were used. Only 27 percent of guests used bathrobes supplied in the rooms. “We didn’t study slippers, but can safely assume that as many, or a few more, use slippers, especially as they are often unpacked and placed at bedside during turndown service, encouraging their use,” Mr. Dev said.

Hotel cleaning standards often dictate discarding slippers that have been removed from their packaging, according to members of Unite Here, the union that represents hotel housekeepers.

“Waste from hotel slippers may seem minor when compared to larger issues like energy consumption, food waste or water usage,” Mr. Legrand wrote. “However, at the end of the day, every bit of waste adds up and increasing attention is being paid to these aspects as part of a broader sustainable industry approach.”

Sourcing greener footwear

Hotel companies that have made commitments to banning single-use plastics have blazed a trail to more eco-friendly slippers.

Six Senses , a collection of 23 high-end resorts, offers slippers made from natural materials like jute or bamboo, or from recycled plastic. Six Senses Crans-Montana in Switzerland stocks Kaaita felt slippers made from recycled plastic bottles that can be washed and reused or recycled at the end of their life span. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group phased out single-use slippers in 2022 and replaced them with models made of cardboard, cork and cotton that are cleaned and restocked in the rooms. The Dorian, Autograph Collection hotel in Calgary, Canada, stopped supplying disposable slippers in the hotel’s suites in favor of upgraded ones that are thicker and more durable; they are available on demand to guests in other rooms. Patrons are encouraged to take them home for “multiple uses rather than single use,” wrote Ian Jones, the general manager, in an email.

Green Key , which vets hotels for sustainability practices, suggests hotels make slippers and other single-use amenities available on request, rather than mandating elimination. In keeping with its commitment to eliminate single-use plastics, the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina only supplies slippers to guests who ask for them.

Few slipper-supplying resorts go as far to reduce footwear waste as Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali. At its on-site Sustainability Lab, which turns glass bottles into drinking glasses and old umbrellas into tote bags, shredded slipper parts become stuffing for bean bag chairs.

“By closing the loop on waste, we are creating a circular economy,” said Morgan Martinello, the resort’s general manager.

Refuse or reuse

Will travelers start bringing their own slippers the way they carry their own water bottles and shopping bags? They might have to.

“We are having many a debate about slippers, pens, cotton balls, toiletries,” said Oliver Milne-Watson, the general manager of the Newman , a luxury hotel set to open later this year in London. The rooms will not contain single-use plastics though the management has found it difficult to find a satisfying reusable slipper.

“We’re asking, ‘Can we make this with something with a longer life cycle and if not do we really need it?’” Mr. Milne-Watson said.

Experts doubt the needle on slippers will fully swing until travelers speak up.

“We are at the stage now with this as it was with food waste a few years ago,” Mr. LaGrand, the IU professor, said. “It is when we start monitoring, measuring and quantifying both the cost of sourcing and wasting that the realization kicks in: We must do something about it!”

They are already on the minds of some travelers.

“I’ve contemplated how short of a life span these tend to have in the past, and now I’ve gotten into the habit of taking my used pair with me when I leave the hotel,” said Karla Cobreiro, 33, a publicist based in Miami. She puts them in a carry-on alongside a sleep mask and other essentials. “Now I slip into them on long flights.”
