The Premier League will stage a six-team Summer Series across five Eastern cities in the United States in July, headlined by Chelsea and Newcastle United , the league announced on Tuesday.

Having previously arranged a biennial Premier League Asia Trophy dating back to 2003, the Premier League will host a preseason tournament in the U.S. for the first time, July 22-30.

With Manchester United , Liverpool and Arsenal also planning to play summer friendlies in the U.S., Tuesday's news means that almost half of the Premier League's 20 teams will prepare for the 2023-24 season in North America.

"We are delighted to be bringing six clubs to the USA in July for the first-ever Premier League Summer Series," Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said. "Our clubs have incredible supporters in the U.S., who passionately follow their teams throughout the season.

"We have seen this dedication first-hand from the tens of thousands who have attended our Mornings Live fan events and are excited to be building on this by bringing live Premier League action to five cities this summer.

"We are currently enjoying one of the most competitive Premier League seasons of all time at both ends of the table, and I am sure we will see some thrilling matches during the tournament."

Chelsea will face Brighton & Hove Albion in the opening Summer Series game at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on July 22, with Fulham facing Brentford and Newcastle taking on Aston Villa at the same venue the next day.

Three games on July 26 will pit Brentford against Brighton in Atlanta, Fulham versus Villa in Orlando and Chelsea taking on Newcastle in the late game at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Brighton will play Newcastle at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, on July 28 before FedEx Field in Maryland hosts Villa against Brentford and Chelsea against Fulham on July 30.

Many of the top teams in the English Premier League have continued to tour the United States during preseason summer camp and six more will headline a new tournament starting this July.

Chelsea and Newcastle United headline six EPL clubs that will take part in the inaugural Summer Series from July 22-30 across the country. Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, and Aston Villa will also take part in the summer tour which is slated to take place across five U.S. stadiums.

“We are delighted to be bringing six clubs to the USA in July for the first-ever Premier League Summer Series,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said. “Our clubs have incredible supporters in the U.S., who passionately follow their teams throughout the season. We have seen this dedication first-hand from the tens of thousands who have attended our Mornings Live fan events and are excited to be building on this by bringing live Premier League action to five cities this summer.

“We are currently enjoying one of the most competitive Premier League seasons of all time at both ends of the table, and I am sure we will see some thrilling matches during the tournament,” Masters added.

Christian Pulisic, Tim Ream, and Antonee Robinson are three U.S. men’s national team players that could feature for their respective clubs this summer. Pulisic’s status with Chelsea remains unknown, but Robinson and Ream have remained stalwarts for Fulham this EPL campaign.

Chelsea will face Brighton & Hove Albion in the opening match of the tournament at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Fulham takes on Brentford on July 23 at the same venue while Newcastle United takes on Aston Villa later that evening.

July 26 will feature Brentford vs. Brighton & Hove Albion at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia while Chelsea takes on Newcastle United at the same venue. Exploria Stadium in Orlando will welcome Fulham vs. Aston Villa on the same night.

Former Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron will return to Atlanta after helping the Five Stripes win the 2018 MLS Cup.

Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey will host Brighton & Hove Albion vs. Newcastle United on July 28 before FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland plays host to Aston Villa vs. Brentford and Chelsea vs. Fulham on July 30.

Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United are also expected to feature in the U.S. this summer as part of their preseason preparations.

CFC would do well to sort out who will be owning/ coaching/ playing for that mess instead of cash cow tour again this summer. and i realize folks will say “but they will be playing english teams anyway” but they are all clubs above them in the table with their current crap better together than chelsea’s. something is obviously fairly rotten at its core if you run assorted managers through the place and it just gets worse. so quit pedaling hard like all it needs is more effort at the same ways. flip the bike upside down and take it apart.

to me it’s pretty obvious what the issue is, it’s offense. their defensive numbers would be solid for a UCL type EPL team. their offensive numbers are bottom 10, which is then how reality plays out. same GF as palace right behind them. havertz and sterling can’t carry the team but are the only ones over 3 goals in all competitions. generally comes across like a team full of second fiddles in search of a haaland type or two who slam in 20+ and carry most of the load themselves. and a general problem for several years is they seem more “bought” than “purpose built.” previous iterations they had the checkbook out but there was more of a grander scheme and making sure the roles were all covered.

Newcastle United are set to firm up pre-season plans in due course after successfully sealing their place in the Premier League for the 2022/23 campaign.

The Magpies have not jetted off for a summer tour since 2019, when they visited China for the Premier League Asia Trophy, but did spend two winter training camps in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates earlier this term. The United States has been mooted as a probable destination but club officials are urging supporters to wait for official confirmation before making travel plans.

Newcastle last visited the US in 2015 during the ill-fated Steve McClaren era when they played in Milwaukee, Sacramento and Portland. They were also in America in 2011 when they toured Kansas City, Orlando and Columbus.

The global pandemic put a stop to fans travelling for pre-season in 2020 when United headed to York for a pre-season training camp before playing a series of behind closed doors friendlies. Supporters were more involved last summer when they watched United beat Doncaster and Burton Albion and draw at Rotherham, as well as losing to York City in their opener.

United are expected to play a clutch of friendlies both overseas and in the UK as well as the annual home friendly game at St James' Park.

Newcastle United v Sheffield United - Premier League

Fans of Newcastle United had the opportunity to engage directly with Magpie beat reporter Chris Waugh in a Q&A published over The Athletic on April 16 in which he provided some insights and analysis on various aspects of the club, including player performances, transfers, and other issues affecting the organization’s operations.

Waugh reflects on the broader sentiment among players and managers regarding the future preseason getting plotted by the Magpies, emphasizing the unsustainability of the sport’s increasing speed and physicality in the face of an expanding match calendar.

Concerns have risen within football regarding the sustainability of the current intensity of training and playing schedules. Despite these concerns, the financial boost this type of preseason could yield may prevent significant changes benefiting the board more than the actual well-being of the players.

Newcastle are reportedly planning a post-season tour to Australia, a decision Waugh criticizes as “ludicrous” from a footballing and fitness perspective.

Obviously, Newcastle is trying to become a natural competitor in European competitions whether that’s the Conference, Europa, or Champions League. That, however, comes with the “negative” of having to play many more games than teams that fail to reach such heights.

According to Waugh, Newcastle will need a deeper and stronger squad in order to compete at the highest level going forward, including both bringing reinforcements this summer and keeping the current players in the quad as healthy as possible—which means, avoiding nonsensical preseason taxes on the physical front.

Eddie Howe and his coaching staff are reportedly considering adjustments to their preseason plans but they would need the approval from the PIF and other board members in order to do that.

Matches will be staged at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Maryland, Everbank Stadium in Jacksonville and a yet-to-be confirmed stadium in Tampa Bay.

Newcastle United and newly-promoted Leicester City had agreed to the proposal but dropped out, with the latter being replaced by Palace.

Last season, a number of England ’s top-flight clubs participated in the inaugural Premier League Summer Series, featuring Chelsea , Brighton , Brentford , Newcastle, Fulham , and Aston Villa . The matches were held across Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, New Jersey, and Maryland.

The Athletic  reported in February that the 2024 Summer Series was cancelled due to several complications around organising the event, including issues around broadcasting. They are, however, looking at holding the series again in 2025.

With Manchester United , Manchester City , Chelsea, Liverpool , Aston Villa and Bournemouth already scheduled to tour America this summer, the new series will take that number to 10 Premier League sides playing pre-season games across the Atlantic.

Top clubs in England are prioritising the U.S. due to expected market congestion in 2025 and 2026 with the FIFA Club World Cup and the men’s World Cup.

Pre-season tours are considered crucial for clubs to engage with growing fan bases in key markets. For instance, Arsenal boasts more supporters’ clubs in the U.S. than there are states, and Manchester United connected with over 4,000 supporters through various club-affiliated events last summer.
