MS Serenissima Review

Review of ms serenissima.

The 1960-built MS Serenissima cruise ship was constructed in Norway and launched by Hurtigruten as "Harald Jarl". The boat operated on itineraries along Norway's coastline and fjords. Extensively refurbished in 2003 (for US$20+ million), the 95-passenger vessel was renamed "MS Andrea" and chartered exclusively by Noble Caledonia UK (London England-based luxury cruise travel company) for several years.

The vessel (IMO number 5142657) is currently St Vincent Grenadines - flagged (MMSI 376439000) and registered in Kingstown. Its previous flag-state was Liberia (MMSI 636011534).

MS Serenissima cruise ship

In 2012, the ship was acquired by Premier Cruises Ltd and renamed "MS Serenissima".

After an extensive drydock refit /thorough renovation and upgrade, Serenissima started passenger shipping operations in April 2013. The boat was last drydock-refurbished in 2018-2019.

With its small size (LOA length 87 m / 285 ft) and low draft (4,9 m / 16 ft), the ship can navigate into shallow waterways and remote harbors inaccessible to larger vessels.

MS Serenissima cruise ship

Premier Cruise Line was established in 1984 (by Bjornar K Hermansen and Bruce Nierenberg) under a licensing agreement with The Walt Disney Company (1923-founded) as the direct predecessor to DCL-Disney Cruise Line . In 1992, Disney decided to establish their own cruise brand (DCL) and terminated the agreements with the company. Premier Cruises then entered into a similar licensing agreement with Warner Bros Entertainment Inc (1923-founded) and started to use the popular Looney Tunes characters in order to continue to target the family cruising market. The family-friendly ship travel brand continued to offer cruisetours/land and sea vacation packages inclusive of visits to Florida's theme parks Universal Studios and Disney World Resort.

For Noble Caledonia, Serenissima's current cruise itinerary program is very diverse and includes destinations like the Panama Canal , Portugal's Azores Islands, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Northern Europe (UK-Scotland, Baltic Sea).

Decks and Cabins

MS Serenissima staterooms (59 total) are attractively designed, fully air-conditioned and standard equipped with LCDTV (satellite reception, 13 channels plus a ship video channel for the lectures presented in Andrea Lounge), safety deposit box (in the closet), direct-dial phone, en-suite bathroom (single-sink vanity, WC toilet, shower, towels, toiletries/shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soaps), hairdryer, robes, slippers. Bottles of sparkling and still water are replenished daily.

Ten different cabin grades are arranged over 5 decks (all with cabins). With the exception of the 3 inside cabins, all staterooms are outside-facing, with either portholes or windows. Because of the ship's older design, cabins vary greatly as sizes (between 7-27 m2 / 75-285 ft2), shapes, and bed and bath configurations, but this only adds to the boat's overall charm.

Serenissima's cabin types and categories are as follows: Inside Single Cabin (cat 1/size 10-12 m2), Standard Stateroom (cat 2/size 10-16 m2), Superior Stateroom (cat 3/size 12-20 m2), Deluxe Stateroom (cat 4/size 15-16 m2), Junior Suite (cat 5/size 21-22 m2), Executive Suite (cat 6/size 26-27 m2), Owners Suite (cat 7/size 23 m2), and Standard Single Cabin (cat 8/size 7-13 m2).

Shipboard facilities

The ship's main facilities are the two bar lounges (Andrea, and Harald/both on deck 5), Venice Restaurant (dining room), Library, Shop (selling branded merchandise).

The larger Andrea Lounge (forward) is spacious and comfortable and the smaller Harald Lounge (aft) is more intimate. The small Library is equipped with an Internet computer.

Outdoor deck spaces include a spacious Observation Deck that allows for 360-degree views of the sea or the passing scenery. From here, guests can step down to the Lido Deck (deck 5) fitted with an outdoor Jacuzzi/Whirlpool, open-air Bar and a small Fitness Room (gym with two treadmills).

Deck 6's covered seating area is ideal for relaxation. All lifejackets are on Deck 6 (stored outside, near the Muster/emergency assembly station).

The Infirmary/hospital is served by a resident physician on 24-hour duty. One elevator/midship lift interconnects decks 3 to 6.

The cruise ship's "open bridge" policy allows tourists to visit the top-deck Navigation Bridge/Wheelhouse (forward on deck 7) and enjoy the company of the Captain and the officers on duty. Reception Desk's guest services are provided between 7 am and 10 pm. During the night, the Reception's phone is switched over to the Wheelhouse.

The Venice Restaurant (midship on Deck 5/positioned between both lounges) is light and airy and with capacity to accommodate all passengers in a single sitting. The dining room features great views from all tables. Breakfast is served buffet-style and offers cooked dishes and eggs to order. Lunch is also buffet-style with cold and hot dishes. Dinner is served a la carte and is 4 courses, except for at Captain's Dinner (6-course affair). There are alfresco dining facilities used weather permitting.

The onboard food is largely based on locally sourced produce (where possible). Included at lunch and dinner is a choice of white or red wine (by the glass), beer and soft drinks. Coffee and tea are served around the clock in the Andrea Lounge.

When dining passengers are able to choose their seating arrangements at their leisure. The dress code is informal except for Captain's Dinner for which guests may choose to dress in smarter attire.

The ship carries its own fleet of Zodiacs (RIBs/rigid inflatable boats) used for near-shore expedition cruising and passenger transportation in destinations without proper docking infrastructure.

  • Noble Caledonia Introduction

noble caledonia norway cruise

Designed to carry travelers in comfort to the most remote corners of the world. Noble Caledonia’s ships provide access to free onboard intranet and a number of resources, including on-demand movies, daily programs and landing site information, photos from the voyage, live camera feeds, international news, a full gift shop catalogue, and information about the ship and the team. Guests can access the intranet wirelessly with their tablet, laptop, or smartphone from anywhere on the ship.

Wine, beer, juice, and soft drinks served with lunch and dinner are included, as well as coffee, tea, chocolate, cappuccino, water, and snacks throughout the expedition. Alcoholic drinks and other beverages can be purchased at the ship’s bar.

Noble Caledonia’s passion is small ships and each year they create a captivating and diverse collection of worldwide journeys. Their ships are big enough to sail the seven seas comfortably but small enough to drop anchor in places off the beaten track, avoiding the regular, crowded tourist stops whenever possible.

Whether you join one of their voyages close to home in the Hebrides or one in a far flung and exotic destination such as Papua New Guinea you can be assured of a warm welcome onboard and a team of knowledgeable expedition staff and guest speakers who will make your journey an enjoyable and rewarding one.

Whilst there are many large sailing ships offering passages around the world there are few if any, that can compare in terms of luxury to Sea Cloud II. To be on deck when the sails are fully extended is a marvellous and unrivalled experience as Sea Cloud II glides through the water powered by the wind catching in her sails.

In a world where places seem to be becoming ever more crowded, exploring by river offers a respite and the opportunity to enjoy the ever-changing landscape from the comfort of your floating hotel. From the Danube to the Ganges or the Amazon to the Irrawaddy, Noble Caledonia offers a diverse range of worldwide river cruises.

For those remarkable places in the world which cannot be accessed by sea or river, Noble Caledonia offers an extensive array of escorted land tours many of which involve travelling by private train.

Small Ships – Big Experiences with Noble Caledonia. For those who enjoy seeing and learning about the wonders of nature, be it birds, mammals, marine life, geology or botany, Noble Caledonia’s worldwide expedition cruises offer the perfect environment.

Noble Caledonia

Noble Caledonia

Inspiring Itineraries  – Noble Caledonia pride themselves on always having something new and unique to offer and their well informed and well-travelled London based staff have created a captivating collection of journeys all over the world using varying modes of transport. Constantly on the move from region to region their vessels specialise in one-off itineraries, it is rare that identical itineraries are offered within the same year and if they are it is for very special reasons or extraordinary demand.

Life Onboard  – The experience and atmosphere onboard one of their vessels is very different to that onboard the usual big cruise ships and is more akin to a private yacht or country house hotel, with informative guest speakers and cruise directors as well as expedition teams. The emphasis of their cruises is on discovery whether based around the natural world or a more cultural theme.

Onboard Experts  – They will accompany many of the tours and add to your enjoyment of the areas you are visiting through a series of talks and informal discussions on board. Either as a specialist on the area or in a specific field, their on board talks will bring an added dimension to the tour, complementing the guides who will share their local knowledge with you during your excursions.

Noble Caledonia has, over the years, built up a strong following of clients who travel with them regularly. They are now finding that a number of clients have taken over ten holidays with them. Therefore, they have extended the Commodore Club to acknowledge the wonderful support they have received. Below you will find some of the advantages of membership together with the limited joining qualifications.

Membership Entitlements

  • 5% discount off the regular price payable for the basic advertised holiday (after the deduction of any other applicable discounts or promotions). Please note that this discount applies to the Commodore Club members only and not to any non-members travelling with you. The discount is not applicable to any ‘additional extras’ such as flight upgrades, holiday extensions, etc. Please note that the Commodore Club membership entitlements are not applicable on a small number of holidays that they operate. Please also note that prices shown in offers made specifically to Commodore Club members will already be inclusive of the ‘standard’ 5% discount and will not, therefore, be further discountable.
  • A lower deposit of just 5% in place of the usual 10%.
  • Regular mailings of late offers and promotions.
  • Preview information on selected forthcoming tours and cruises prior to general publication.

Qualifications for Membership

  • To become a member you must have travelled on a previous Noble Caledonia holiday.
  • Bookings have to be made directly with them (not via a travel agent).
  • Bookings made prior to membership, do not qualify for a discount.
  • Once a member, all bookings have to be made directly with Noble Caledonia Ltd in order to benefit from the Commodore Club discount and offers (and not via a travel agent).
  • Any bookings made prior to membership do not qualify for the discount.

We have put down a deposit for a very interesting b2b itinerary on Noble Caledonia in 2021:  [starts and ends in London with flights included to the ship] Mallorca, Menorca, Sardinia, Corsica, Elba, Corsica (again), Naples – then second cruise Naples, 7 ports in Sicily, and Malta.  The ship is  Hebridean Sky.

There is so little about Noble Caledonia on Cruise Critic.  I would love to chat with anyone who has sailed on them.

I have done many trips with NC but not since 2015.  They have some brilliant itineraries and use these old Renaissance class ships, Island Sky, Caledonian Sky and Hebridean Sky.   These were all built 1989-91.  I've been on Island Sky and Caledonian Sky but not Hebridean Sky.  However, these ships (which also includes Corinthian which I've also been on) are all similar with subtle differences in layout.

I'm happy to answer any queries you might have.

Thanks @Fletcher   I do have some questions:

•  We have booked cabin 510, which has a balcony.  Doing a back-2-back we thought it a good idea to have privacy available if/when we want it and that this was a good compromise to give space and privacy without spending the extra for a suite.  Any thoughts about that cabin versus the alternatives?

•  Noble Caledonia will be including flights from London.  We plan to stay 2 nights in London before the flight to Mallorca, so it doesn't matter which airport they leave from.  At the end we are taking the post-cruise extension in Malta but then plan to continue on to New York JFK directly after arriving in London – any idea which London airport they are likely to use?   A lot of their itineraries end in Malta, so I'm hoping they have a pattern.  We want to fly Virgin Atlantic, which has one non-stop from LGW and many from LHR.

•  I'm are used to arranging our shore excursions myself, so it will be a bit different having everything included [we have had that in Galapagos and on river cruises, but not a Mediterranean cruise like this].  They generally seem to do the excursions in the morning and leave the afternoon free.  Are there activities onboard in the afternoon, or what do people generally do?

Cabin 510 will be fine.  There is a trade-off in space inside the cabin because of the balcony and the balcony itself will be narrow, so you will sit facing each other rather than facing outwards.  BTW, another of these ships is the Silver Galapagos which you might have been on.

As far as flights are concerned, I have no way of knowing except they are most likely to use British Airways which flies into Gatwick from Malta, arriving sound 4pm.  Only NC will know and maybe not yet.  I often used to call them about flights and hotels and they hadn't a clue until very near departure date.

NC excursions are generally very well organised and heavily biased towards cultural sightseeing.  They won't do touristy things or much shopping and your itinerary will be heavy on history.  The Sicily portion looks fabulous.  I once did a NC cruise in this region and it remains one of our best  cruises. There will probably be some sort of historian on board for talks, there will be a pianist but nothing else in the way of entertainment. Your fellow passengers are likely to be at least 95 percent British, elderly and extremely well travelled.  NC has a loyal following of regulars who have been everywhere, usually on NC ships.

Do not expect a genuine luxury cruise like Seabourn or Silversea or Regent - the only other cruise lines I have sailed with.  Food on the ship won't be in the same league and house wines are very basic with a choice between red and white and that's it.  However, it will be a rewarding cruise and a very social one - everyone gets to know everyone else.   And there is no dress code.  In my experience on NC ships, the classier the person, the least dressy they are.

NC has very little internet presence.  They like it that way and most of their clients have never heard of the internet anyway.

Thanks.  When Windstar recently cancelled our Spanish Serenade cruise for this October, I thought about jumping on this year's Noble Caledonia Sicily cruise – but it's on Serenissima and I remember your warning about that ship.  When I saw the brochure for 2021 was on Hebridean Sky, I felt much more comfortable.  I have never sailed on an R-roman numeral ship [we did Galapagos on Celebrity Xpedition], but we very much enjoy the successor generation of R-ships on Azamara.

I will look forward to a proper pot of tea or a good G&T in the afternoon.  [It's easy to find decent gin, but most places ruin it with poor tonic.  I might have to ask for Noel Coward's martini recipe:  fill a glass with gin, then waive it in the general direction of Italy – that should be pretty easy in Sicily!]

Our cruising life began in 2005 on a Noble Caledonia cruise to the Baltic.  We were hooked on the small ship experience.  We went everywhere with NC until 2016.  That was our 11th cruise with them to the Caribbean aboard the Serenissima.  That ship was beyond awful and a lot went wrong with the itinerary as well.  It was the cruise from hell.  I wrote some harsh criticism on the internet and received a letter from NC's managing director who said he disliked public criticism so much that he had banned us for life.  That's the sort of company that NC is.  Very touchy.  When things go right, their cruises are great.  When things go wrong . . .

Have a great trip on the Hebridean Sky.

MMDown Under

Last year I cruised on Serenissima, a Russian ship, which is chartered by Noble Caledonia, from Tromso, Norway to Oban, Scotland.  I really liked the Noble Caledonia product of interesting itineraries and included excursions.  I would definitely cruise with them again on cruises which have no single supplement.

I was told by passengers that Noble Caledonia's other ships are better than Serenissima, but I enjoyed the unique ship and my large port hole cabin.

Ask Noble Caledonia which airport they will be using in London.  Our flight with Noble Caledonia departed from Heathrow, where I stayed at an Ibis Hotel close by for two nights and caught a local bus to Windsor for the day.

Bon Voyage for your b2b cruise.

Thanks @MMDown Under   I don't care which airport Noble Caledonia starts from as we will be staying two nights in Kensington to re-visit the V&A and other museums in the area.  It's the flight home that matters, as we would like to keep going straight to JFK.  But most flights from Malta seem to go to LGW and most flights to JFK leave from LHR.  I will check with Noble Caledonia when it's time to book our Atlantic flights, but they may not know yet – so I will book a late flight from LHR and figure we can get a transfer if necessary.  But you offer a good idea:  assuming we'll have more than enough time for the transfer, we could arrange a stop at Windsor.

  • 2 months later...

An interesting situation in the Falkland Islands . . . two Noble Caledonia ships, Hebridean Sky and Island Sky, have been moored in a bay for several days.  This bay is close to Mare Harbour and the large Mount Pleasant RAF base.  National Geographic Orion has been with them but has now sailed away.  It's my understanding that Noble Caledonia will be air-lifting passengers on their two ships back to the UK, possibly using the RAF.  It's unknown to me if any passengers are ill.   As usual, it's hard to get any info about NC.

  • 3 weeks later...

Friends of ours were booked on a 7-day Hebridean Sky cruise around Scotland in May.  They are Noble Caledonia loyalists and must have done a dozen trips with them.  They received a general email from NC advising them that their cruise is cancelled.  On NC website in the T&Cs it says clearly that in the unlikely event that NC cancel a cruise, passengers will receive a cash refund, plus modest compensation, or the chance to transfer to another cruise.  All quite reasonable.

However, our friends have been given a voucher for 110 percent of their cruise price to put against another cruise.  If the voucher is not taken by 31 December 2021 only then will they receive a refund.  By which time NC may well be out of business.

Wouldn't that 2021 payout be guaranteed by ABTA or ATOL?  [What I'm wondering is if our 2021 Noble Caledonia fly/cruise package is protected, since we are in the US and purchased through a US travel agent.]

My friends wrote to NC requesting a refund and NC have responded positively on the same day. The latest and laudable company statement is here -

https://www.noble-caledonia.co.uk/about-noble-caledonia/coronavirus-company-update/

As someone who has been critical of NC over the years I think they seem to be reacting well to this crisis.

I Really like this company and would like to cruise with them on a small ship in the future.

@Fletcher – Our B2B has a turnaround stop in Naples, and I am planning out what to do there [our second visit].  On the last night of the 'first' cruise, we plan to attend Mass at 7 pm.  It seems to be the case that dinner onboard is one fixed seating.  Do you know what time that is?  [I have found an interesting restaurant in Naples, but the farewell dinner might be a social occasion to say goodbye to our new friends from the first leg.]

Also, is it possible for you to put me in contact with your friends who have sailed so recently?  My email is in my signature [[email protected]] so they can contact me if they are willing.  Thanks!
