Aurora Review

p&o cruises november 2023

One of two adults-only ships in the P&O Cruises’ fleet (the other is Arcadia ), Aurora is now approaching its 25th year of service. Yet despite the advanced years, Aurora is consistently the most popular of the line’s seven vessels, attracting a die-hard crowd of P&O Cruises’ loyalists who won’t go on any other.

At a manageable size (compared to today’s gigantic cruise ships), with just 1,910 passengers, Aurora is a ship you won’t get lost on. Deck Plans are simple to navigate, and despite sailing full, flows are such that it never felt crowded onboard, even on a sea day.

Sindhu Restaurant on P&O Cruises Aurora

Aurora has just two specialty restaurants – the Glass House and Sindhu, both of which are excellent value (note The Beach House has an upcharge, but it’s not a restaurant, rather a space at the back of the buffet); 10 bars, again all offering great value drinks, certainly compared to land prices; and a variety of room choices, many quirky and unusual (rather than most of today’s “cookie-cutter” offerings).

Salmon pink bathroom on P&O Cruises Aurora

Aurora’s age does show in some aspects, however, with rust patches on balconies and some decidedly dated décor, particularly in the cabin bathrooms (we’re not sure who thought sparkly salmon pink was the best color to choose, even back in 2000). And you also won’t find many of the modern fittings you get on newer ships such as USB ports or charging points by the bed.

But none of that matters when you’re on a ship with this much character, where the crew are happy, the vibe if positive and the guests are made to feel special.

It’s no wonder Aurora is the most popular ship in the P&O Cruises fleet.

Aurora’s Deck Plan is Simple to Navigate

Sports Court on P&O Cruises Aurora

Aurora’s deck plan is simple to navigate and is designed in such a way that even when the ship is sailing full it never feels crowded – another plus compared to some of today’s megaships, which can feel crowded even when not completely full.

Passengers sailing aboard Aurora will find a wealth of outdoor sports – quoits, archery, golf, basketball, shuffleboard and pickle ball – in the Sports Courts on the Sun Deck (Deck 13), as well as plenty of loungers.

Deck 12 is given over to two swimming pools – the outdoor Crystal Pool and Crystal Bar which adjoins the spa; and the indoor Riviera Pool, with bar. You’ll also find the Horizon Restaurant buffet up here, which includes both indoor and outdoor seating.

Lido Pool on P&O Cruises Aurora

Decks 11-9 are given over to cabins (and the ship’s gymnasium). Deck 8 includes a clutch of new cabins which replaced the kids club during Aurora’s 2019 refit and the Lido Pool all the way aft, which is a good size and offers wake views. It’s surrounded by three deck terraces which curve round and look down to the pool, all with loungers.

The shops, the two specialty restaurants – Sindhu and The Glass House – and bars all lead off the main atrium, a gorgeous 4-deck high space with a stunning central sculpture. This is the main area for drinks, shows, live music and late-night dancing, and the deck plan is designed as such as none of these spots create noise in cabins (even in the new rooms above Carmen’s).

Vanderbilt's is a quiet room set aside mainly for cards on P&O Cruises Aurora

Aurora also has rooms such as the Uganda Room, the Library and Vanderbilt’s that are specifically designed for quiet pursuits such as cards, painting or simply curling up with a book.

There are two dining rooms – Medina, which is anytime dining; and Alexandria, which is for fixed time dining at the same table, both on Deck 6, one down from The Curzon theatre.

P&O Cruises Aurora’s Cabins Are Comfortable But Lack Mod Cons

There are 934 cabins in ten different categories, including six new(-ish) solo balcony cabins, 16 accessible cabins and a number of interconnecting cabins, as well as mini-suites and suites, including one with a baby grand piano.

The ship is approaching its 25th year, so don’t expect modern amenities like LED lights, USB ports by the bed or motion-detecting lighting, even after the 2019 refurb. What you will find however, is functional furniture and fittings, that despite their age, only show minimal wear and tear. Bed, sofas and chairs are comfortable, and as we find with older ships, wardrobe space is often more generous.

Some ocean view cabins on Aurora look out onto the deck

And, being an older ship, you’ll also find unusual cabins, such as insides with a living area; standard balcony with half-size bathtubs and even ocean views which look out onto passenger decks.

The balcony cabins tend to be the most popular, as well as the newer cabins added to the aft of Deck 8 where the kids club once was; cabins to avoid are the aforementioned ocean views with deck views and lower insides near public areas.

Food on P&O Cruises Aurora is of a Consistently High Quality

Duck dish in Sindhu on Aurora

It’s relatively easy – and expected, as you are paying premium – to get specialty dining right on a cruise ship, but the real test is getting food in the main dining room (MDR) and buffet right and in this respect P&O Cruises Aurora succeeds – and then some. We had some of the best pies we’ve ever tasted on a ship – fabulous curries, delicious bacon, runny rather than dry poached eggs – and this is all in the buffet .

We ate in both main dining rooms during our voyage, and were very impressed with the quality, variety and generosity of cuisine aboard Aurora.

Sindhu, the specialty Indian restaurant onboard, as well as being extraordinary value for money, retains its accolade as the best Indian restaurant at sea, with a wonderful array of dishes including hand-dived scallops and spice-crusted haddock, followed by coconut prawn masala and South Indian style duck (pictured above).

Fellow Passengers

Aurora tends to sail longer length cruises (10 days or more), and being adults-only, the age demographic tends to skew older onboard (65+).

However, the ship also offers a number of short break cruises of three- to four-days which attract a much younger crowd (45+). On our cruise, we had at least two hen parties, numerous young couples, multi-gen groups and groups of girls and men all travelling together -- all Brits, perhaps unsurprisingly given P&O Cruises markets primarily to the British passenger..

There are regular gatherings for LGBTQIA+ passengers, as well as solos and “Friends of Bill W” (Alcoholics Anonymous).

Aurora Dress Code

There are normally two formal nights per seven-night cruise. Black tie for men predominates, although lounge suit and tie are acceptable. Low key evening and cocktail dresses are usual for the women. Those who don't want to dress up can use the cafeteria, but formal attire is required in the main restaurants. The other nights are either semiformal or smart casual, according to the ship's itinerary. Shorts and jeans aren't welcome in the restaurants and codes are enforced.

What's the difference between P&O Saver & Select fares?

When booking your cruise holiday, you will have a choice of options to get the most out of your booking at a price that suits you.

P&O Saver Fare : This option is price driven. Upon making your booking you will choose your style of cabin (Inside cabin, outside window cabin, balcony cabin or suite) The cabin number will then be assigned to you. As this is the cheapest option you will not be able to choose your cabin number. This option does not include any on-board spending, coach transfers, parking at Southampton or choice of dining time.

P&O Select Fare :  The Select Fare is designed to give you more value for money by giving you additional options and features.

When you book a Select Fare you will have the option to choose from one the following:

  • Free parking. You will be allocated parking at the cruise terminal for the full duration of the cruise that will be just a short walk to the ship.
  • Free on-board credit. Receive complimentary spending money to spend on the ship. This will be allocated to your on-board account and can be used to purchase anything on the ship including drinks, excursions or any of the shops located on the ship.
  • Free Return Coach Transfers: This option is fantastic if you are struggling getting to the port. P&O coach transfers pick up from multiple areas in the UK. We can instantly check before you book where your closest pick-up point is.

Choose Your Cabin: When booking on Select Fare you will also have the option to choose your cabin number, so if you would like a mid-ship cabin close to lift or would like to locate near a bar area or restaurant the choice is yours.

Choose a Dining Experience: As an addition you will also be able to have your own choice of dining time with a selected table size. So, if you are a couple, you can select an intimate table for two or if you are travelling as a group, you can all be seated all together on a larger table.

Things to do, useful information.

P&O Cruises offers world class dining onboard their ships, so-much-so that all of their executive chefs have been invited to join the Chaine des Rotisseurs. The Chaine des Rotisseurs is an international respected gastronomic society that was founded in Paris in 1950 and brings together professionals, such as chefs, restaurateurs and non-professionals from across the globe.

Traditionally, the cuisine onboard has always had a British feel to it with a contemporary twist thanks to the influence of the likes of Marco Pierre White over the years. Through these celebrity chefs, not only do the signature restaurants have a unique feel, but the whole network of restaurants onboard receive planning and input from culinary experts to create a truly refined dining experience.

The Food Courts

The Food Courts onboard P&O Cruises offer a fantastic option for casual, 24 hour dining and these relaxed eateries are always popular with cruisers. The early morning is based on breakfast food, with a brunch-style menu available from late morning. There is then a late morning snack, lunch and afternoon tea and cakes. The evenings offer main courses ideal after a day of shore excursions. If you find yourself feeling peckish after the main meal, there is also a selection of snacks available throughout the night, from pizza to sandwiches.

The Main Dining Room

Dining onboard a P&O Cruises ship is made easy thanks to the options of either Club or Freedom Dining in the Main Dining Rooms. Club Dining sees you sat with the same people at a set seating time each day and is a great way to structure your time onboard and meet fellow passengers. Meanwhile, Freedom Dining allows you to turn up and be seated whenever you wish within the set serving window for the venue.

These main dining rooms offer an elegant ambiance and sociable atmosphere while you enjoy silver-service and a five course menu, the perfect opportunity to put on your best clothes and make the most of the delicious food on offer.

Select Dining

Select Dining is P&O Cruises’ specialty dining option, offering more intimate venues, a stunning variety of food and celebrity chef restaurants. Whether it's a romantic meal for two, a celebration, or just a change of scenery, these restaurants offer fantastic food. From the fine dining of The White Room, to the relaxed atmosphere of The Glass House or Café Bordeaux, there is something for everyone. Cafe Bordeaux onboard Aurora and Ocean Grill onboard Arcadia are signature specialty restaurants designed by the three Michelin starred chef Marco Pierre White. Marco's ideas are ingrained in the menu and concepts behind the restaurants, creating a truly unique cruise dining experience.

In addition, The Glass House is based on a London wine bar that can be found onboard Aurora, Azura, and Britannia, where all the wines are selected by British wine expert Olly Smith. The Glass house also offers a light menu, which has been picked to go hand-in-hand with the wines on offer.

In keeping with P&O Cruises commitment to all things British, guests with a sweet tooth will appreciate another taste of home in the form of Jude's Ice Cream. All ships stock a range of flavours of the award-winning, Hampshire-born ice cream, with the family-friendly ships offering an especially extensive list of choices.

However, it must be noted that many of the select dining restaurants do carry an additional cover change.

Food Allergies and Special Dietary Requirements

P&O Cruises is committed to ensuring everyone can enjoy the excellent cuisine available onboard during their cruise. So, provided you notify your cruise consultant ahead of time and inform your Head Waiter when you go to dine for the first time, P&O Cruises will be able to cater to any special dietary requests and food allergies you have. You can find out more about P&O Cruises' current policies in our blog on the best cruise lines for food allergies and special diets right here.

All ships within P&O Cruises fleet come to life once night falls and with entertainment ranging from hit movies at the cinema to live performances at the theatre and lively events at the bars onboard, no night has to be the same.

Live performances can be found around every corner on a P&O Cruises getaway. With exciting venues such as the Headliners Theatre and its LED backdrop, to the more intimate Starlights lounge, guests can expect broadway-style shows, live music, dancing and even acrobatics, every night of their cruise.

For those who like to sit back with a drink in hand, there are a whole host of bars to choose from such as Brodie’s, an English-style pub, to the sophisticated cocktail and champagne offerings of Blue Bar. Complemented by live piano music and other performances, as well as the opportunity to dance, an evening in a bar can be as laid-back or lively as you want.

When it comes to having a calmer night onboard, P&O Cruises offers the opportunity for guests to enjoy a film. The SeaScreen open air cinema lets guests enjoy the big screen under the starry night sky, while Chaplin’s cinema has 200 comfortable seats for you to settle into and get lost in a film.

P&O Cruises are Britain's favourite cruise line and their family-friendly ships offer fantastic family cruises from the UK; especially if you're looking for a budget-friendly option, as there are many cheap P&O cruises to choose from. From family friendly cabins, fantastic entertainment and sumptuous cuisine to their kids club, The Reef, they offer a superb family holiday with something for everyone. In addition, P&O Cruises offer many itineraries which coincide with the school holidays.

Open from approximately 9am through to 11pm, The Reef is P&O Cruises' exciting complimentary onboard programme for 2 - 17 year olds. Hosted by The Reef Rangers, each of the qualified Youth Team is carefully selected, after having an enhanced DBS check, for their extensive experience planning and facilitating activities. If your child has a birthday onboard, make sure to let the team at The Reef know, so that they can help you celebrate the special day.

  • Splashers (2 - 4 years) - this is a great place for the youngest of the kids club members to meet and play with children their own age under the supervision of the Reef Rangers. They will sing, dance, play with stickle bricks, enter colouring competitions and win prizes. There are puppet shows, parties and even snack time, so parents can be sure that they are well looked after!
  • Surfers (5 - 8 years)- Surfers offer fun filled days with activities aimed to keep this age group entertained all day long. From face painting to three legged races, there is even Cookery Corner where kids can invent their own chocolate bars with all kinds of weird and wonderful ingredients!
  • Scubas (9 - 12 years)- starting a little later in the day, Scubas can have an action packed day with activities such as Giant Jenga to Playstations®. There are drama workshops, pool parties, table tennis competitions and karaoke sessions to keep the kids busy from morning to evening.
  • H2O (13 - 17 years)- H2O is P&O Cruises' teen club, where they can enjoy great facilities including Playstations®, as well as the chance to form their own band in rock school, enjoy a table football competition, take advantage of the free arcade hour or even party away in the afterhours Teen Disco.

Night nursery and group babysitting is also available free of charge, with more information available onboard.

P&O Cruises Oasis Teen Spa

Teens can enjoy various treatments and facilities at the Oasis Teen Spa. Found aboard all family-friendly ships, the spa has been designed with the needs of teenagers in mind. They can alleviate some exam stress with a soothing back massage, or tackle oily skin with a refreshing and cleansing facial. Boot-camp style fitness classes and skilled, reliable hair stylists are also available.

Family Dining

Normally children will join their parents for breakfast and lunch, but since you may occasionally want to dine on your own, P&O Cruises family cruise holidays lay on a special children’s tea every night featuring all the food that children will enjoy- from sausages, fish fingers and pizza to a great selection of healthy options, such as salads, soups, fruit, vegetables and pasta. For babies, P&O Cruises can puree or mash adult food from the main restaurant or alternatively you can request baby food in advance.

Family Staterooms

Family-friendly staterooms are difficult to work out on most cruise lines, but with P&O Cruises you have plenty of choice, from luxury to value options. As with most cruise lines there is great value to be had in the three and four berth inside and outside staterooms, though these do consist of pull down beds, meaning a twin bed option is available, but a king size bed is not. For the balcony staterooms the layout is a little different from ship to ship. Interconnecting cabins are usually available for most stateroom grades, though the availability can be limited.

All children between the ages of 2 -12 will receive a helium balloon, bag of jelly beans and special bedding upon arrival.

Safety and Special Arrangements

Each of the kids clubs have secure systems which only allow authorised entry by shipboard ID. Any children under 12 years must be signed in and out of the club and will be required to wear a safety wristband to ensure they can be correctly identified and returned to parents.

P&O Cruises are able to provide the following equipment, subject to availability: sterilisers, cots, baby bath, bed rails, baby food, nappy disposal units and high chairs. You may be able to request these via the Accommodation Services onboard, however it is advised that you call the Customer Contact Centre ahead to make your request: 0843 374 0111.

When booking a getaway onboard P&O Cruises, you might notice that there are three types of fares on offer: Select Price, Early Saver and Saver. Each fare differs with what comes included with it.

Select Price is the first type of fare available, with lots of flexible options and inclusions:

  • You can choose where your cabin is located
  • Choice of dining time and table size (for Club Dining)
  • Choice of dining style (onboard ships that offer Club Dining and Freedom Dining)
  • The flexibility to alter your booking

When opting for the Select Price fare, you can also choose one of the following:

  • Complimentary car parking in the port of Southampton
  • Onboard spending money
  • A complimentary Southampton coach transfer

The second fare available is the Early Saver. Although it doesn’t come with the benefits of Select Price, it is still a popular choice for those looking for a budget-friendly option.

  • Potential of upgrades throughout your cruise (if available, after those with a non-saver booking)

We had an amazing time. No complaints whatsoever and looking forward to booking again.

The whole experience was totally seamless from the booking process, to the car drop off at CPS parking, check in boarding and security all was super quick.. Luggage was there when we went to our cabin. Dining was fabulous didn’t feel the need to go to speciality restaurants. Loved all the entertainment; Lloyd Wade being the very best went to both his shows amazing! Norwegian Fjords just stunning enjoyed all the port stops Olden being our favourite. Disembarkation very well organised off the ship and in our car within ten minutes. Brilliant Cruise on the beautiful Iona!

Crew are very good.

group

Very well organised. Although it was a very large ship, it managed to feel personal. Would definitely recommend.

You can manage your booking and personalise things such as excursions on the Iglu Portal .

The dress code onboard P&O Cruises is casual throughout the day. Depending on the climate, you can wear t-shirts, shorts, trousers, sundresses, skirts, jumpers and other casual attire across the ship. It is requested, however, that no pool wear is to be worn in the ship’s lounges, inside bars, restaurants or at reception.

There are two types of evening dress codes: Evening Casual and Black Tie. For Evening Casual, you can wear dresses, long skirts, long trousers, long-shirts and other similar attire. Tracksuits are prohibited.

On Black Tie nights, you can dress to impress with a cocktail dress, tuxedos, ball gowns or a smart jacket and tie. Tailored shorts are not allowed in any venues on Black Tie night except for the buffet.

However, the following venues allow Evening Casual dress on Black Tie nights:

  • The Beach House (excluding tailored shorts)
  • 6th Street Diner (excluding tailored shorts)

Food and Drink

P&O Cruises can provide kosher, halal, vegetarian, pescatarian and vegan options, although exact dishes may not be possible. Meanwhile, most intolerances and allergies are catered for such as gluten, wheat, lactose, fat, salt and sugar free.

No one under the age of 18 may buy or consume alcohol onboard. The only exceptions to this are that you must be at least 21 when cruising in the US, and 16-year-olds and above are allowed to have a beer, cider or wine with a meal when accompanied by an adult.

  • Freedom Dining- you can arrive at the dining venue and be seated any time you wish during the set dining window, and are seated on a first-come, first-served basis. This is best for those who want to go with the flow and meet new people at each meal.
  • Club Dining- you eat at a set time each dinner sitting and have your own table with the same group each time. This is best for those who like to structure their day and make good friends during their time cruising.
  • Select Dining- is a meal in one of the speciality restaurants as an alternative to the main dining venues. These usually need to be booked in advance and come with an added surcharge. Select Dining is ideal if celebrating a special occasion or wanting to try a particularly eye-catching dish.

Room service is available 24 hours a day with most items coming with a charge. In addition to this, you can opt to dine in your room for breakfast, lunch and dinner if staying in a suite.

  • Spirits- £3.20

Yes, there are complimentary kids’ and teens’ clubs on all P&O ships - apart from the adults only ships. For more information, see the P&O Family page. There is also a free night nursery/babysitting service for 6-months to 4-year-olds.

The conditions for disabled children are the same as those for adults. The exceptions being that they can be carried by their carer when embarking or disembarking via gangways or onto tenders, whereas adults with mobility issues would be unable to access.

Kids can use all family pools provided they are toilet trained and are under adult supervision.

All main dining rooms have children’s menus. Kids are also welcome to dine in the speciality restaurants, plus there is an earlier children’s tea catering to their tastes beforehand- it’s up to you!
