Paolo Nutini

Tuesday 13th Dec - Sunday 18th Dec 2022

Paolo Nutini announces a run of intimate UK live dates, which commenced at Sheffield’s Leadmill. Nutini released ‘Lose It’ and ‘Through The Echoes’ in 2022 - the two songs provide a taste of what to expect from Last Night In The Bittersweet. Paolo’s fourth studio album is a 70-minute epic that spans the distance from classic rock to post-punk to hypnotic Krautrock, in the process proving its value as his deepest, most varied, most accomplished, and ultimately most rewarding set so far.

Paolo Nutini: the comeback kid

Paolo nutini has been conspicuous by his eight-year absence. as he breaks his silence with new album ‘last night in the bittersweet’, he tells rolling stone uk what he’s been up to and why he can’t wait to perform live.

By Nick Reilly

Paolo Nutini performs live at the 100 Club

“Right, enough’s enough,” tweeted Scottish superstar Lewis Capaldi in early 2020, “where the fuck is Paolo Nutini?”

The tweet clearly struck a chord. It garnered 13,000 retweets from a legion of fans who, like Capaldi , were eagerly awaiting the return of one of Scotland’s most distinctive voices. At that point, it had been six years since Nutini ’s acclaimed third album, Caustic Love — a record which saw him delivering a timeless and enduring love letter to R&B and soul. But when touring duties for that album came to an end, he largely disappeared from the limelight. Bar a handful of charity performances in 2017, there was nothing to hint at a full return.

Some two years and the small matter of a pandemic later, the artist has finally made his much-anticipated comeback with Last Night in the Bittersweet , a record which justifies that absence and is arguably his most complete to date. It sees Nutini’s blue-eyed-soul vocals paired with a vast, kaleidoscopic sound that takes in everything from the recent trend for spoken word on the rocking ‘Lose It’ to hints of Krautrock on the sprawling ‘Heart Filled Up’.

Still, the question remains: just where has Nutini been for the past eight years?

The answer emerges as Rolling Stone UK sits down with him at a London hotel in mid-May. As we talk, he is at the end of a rousing five-night residency at the legendary 100 Club which has been attended by fellow singers Capaldi and Geordie star Sam Fender, who shared Instagram videos from the show and hailed Nutini as one of his teenage heroes.

“The realities of doing this and the whole experience doesn’t feel entirely natural to me,” he says of performing. “I’m not the most extroverted person, but when you’re on a stage you find yourself opening yourself up in that way. The more vulnerable the better, too, when you’re trying to give your audience a piece of you and you’re hoping to get something back. Once that ends, I’ve always had to recalibrate my fucking brain.”

That process of recalibration, it turns out, took the form of a journey to retrace his steps. He had lived the life of a global touring artist but, as is so often the case, found himself restricted to doing short stop-offs in cities which meant he was unable to truly acquaint himself with his surroundings.

“Sometimes you’d just get a couple of nights in these places and a small taste of what they’re about. I tried to go back and spend some time there,” he says of his globetrotting downtime. “I’m lucky I’m able to do that. I’d go away on a Monday and say I was coming back on a Thursday, but I’d return two months later, having made some great, mad experiences along the way.”

“I’m not the most extroverted person, but when you’re on a stage you find yourself opening yourself up” — Paolo Nutini

Throughout, Nutini says he never stopped writing; indeed his travel adventures have shaped the sound of the record. Its title, he explains, reflects a period of personal turbulence he has been living through behind the scenes.

“There was a long period of life for me that could have been defined as bittersweet. The juxtaposition between the ups and the downs was really quick. It wasn’t in terms of my career, just emotionally,” he confides.

“I think I became very content in that rhythm and I guess there was a point where I sought to move out of that and become a happier person. I’m still in the process, but it was a conscious attempt to figure out what was causing that and to try and conquer that.”

Although he refuses to dwell on the subject for too long, he adds: “A lot of the stuff I was doing to myself, I wasn’t dealing with myself in ways that were the healthiest. I was just compromising who I was a lot and I wasn’t giving myself a lot of care or respect. That was holding me in a position that I wanted to get out of.”

paolo nutini travel

These experiences are only too clear on the album. A late stand-out comes in ‘Abigail’, a Bert Jansch-esque folk number which sees the 35-year-old Nutini wistfully dreaming of a life of domestic bliss with a wife and children. “Lord I wanna get happy, before I get old ,” he purrs on the contemplative track.

“I wanna be a happy person and I’m not always content,” he says of the song, which was written in his parents’ garden while he bubbled up with them during lockdown.

“But again, it was recognising this need to make changes in order to be a happier person. It’s not something that someone can exclusively do for you. There’s so many different reasons why people could be looking at themselves in the way I was, but it became very clear that the problem was me.”

“There was a long period of life for me that could have been defined as bittersweet. The juxtaposition between the ups and the downs was really quick” — Paolo Nutini

Still, this introspection is merely one aspect of a record which overwhelmingly fizzes with the energy of a man who is happy to be back at the day job once more.

Take the opening track, ‘Afterneath’, which opens with a soul-searing howl from Nutini, before psych-driven guitars eventually make way for an unlikely sample of Patricia Arquette’s memorable speech in the final scenes of True Romance , the 1993 cult classic written by Quentin Tarantino.

In order to use it, Nutini personally sought clearance from the film-maker himself. “It’s a brutal film but also a beautiful story as well and I just always wanted to use that little speech,” he tells me. “We asked Tarantino if we could use it and, luckily, he said yes, which we were told wasn’t entirely common practice, which made it nicer. It was a cool thing.”

Elsewhere, the inspiration for the aforementioned narrated style on ‘Lose It’ struck while he burned the midnight oil in the recording studio.

“When you start a song that late and you come out with an idea, if someone’s reaction is just more than ‘Let’s fucking go to bed,’ then you’re onto something. And that’s what happened.

“I’m not sure what led me down that path. It was a quick song to come together and a lot of what you hear came from the exceptional players that were able to add to it.”

The timing of his return, Nutini reveals, has left him with a newfound appreciation for what he does. Although his latest collection of songs is far from a pandemic album, he says the lack of community and socialising during that time certainly hastened his comeback.

“I’ve never stopped writing songs and writing ideas and that’s what gives me my kicks. Even if they sit half-finished for a year, I feel like I’m happy regardless of what I’m doing at the time,” he says.

“I’ve never stopped writing songs and writing ideas and that’s what gives me my kicks. Even if they sit half-finished for a year, I feel like I’m happy regardless of what I’m doing at the time” — Paolo Nutini

“But over the past two years, watching how it’s affected everybody, that social shutdown, it made me think that it is a real privilege to go out and communicate with people on such a scale. And to have the outlet of release that performing on a stage can give.”

Performances, no less, that include a headline set at TRNSMT Festival in Glasgow, a party-starting city in a country where the Paisley-born singer’s music has elevated him to godlike status. That set represents his biggest chance to finally show off his sprawling opus of a fourth album.

“I get the tunes out there and I already feel a bit lighter,” he says. “But it’s not just that; you’re giving other people a good buzz and a good kick. It’s a good feeling. It makes you feel like you’re doing something right.”

After such a long period away, you sense that none of his fans would argue with that.

Ahead of his sold-out dates in Dublin, Limerick and Belfast this week, world-renowned Scottish musician Paolo Nutini has announced some huge outdoor shows in Ireland next summer.

Spanning three counties in the same week, the news of a 2023 tour comes following the recent release, and success, of his fourth studio album, Last Night In The Bittersweet, a genre-spanning record that moves from classic rock to post-punk to hypnotic Krautrock.

Ahead of the ticket sales this week, Buzz put together a guide for the shows. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 Paolo Nutini Irish tour.

When do tickets go on sale?

Tickets for the shows in Dublin and Cork are priced at €59.90 and will go on sale this Friday, 19 August at 10am via Ticketmaster . No prices have yet been announced for the Belfast show, however, tickets will be available at the same time.

Paolo Nutini will play Musgrave Park, Cork on 14 June, Malahide Castle, Dublin on Friday 16 June and Belsonic, Belfast on Saturday 17 June. All of these venues are outdoor and we can't tell you if it will rain, but remember it's Ireland.

Support acts

Unfortunately for fans, Nutini has not yet announced who the support acts will be for his shows. The same act may follow him on his tour around the world, or he may opt for an Irish act to warm up the crowd, we will just have to wait.

While he might change it up for 2023, here is Nutini's 2022 setlist, and it is full of bangers.

  • Scream (Funk My Life Up)
  • Stranded Words (Interlude)
  • Coming Up Easy
  • Through the Echoes
  • Cherry Blossom
  • Petrified in Love
  • Jenny Don't Be Hasty / New Shoes

Nutini and Ireland

The singer seems to have a special relationship with Ireland. Announcing another countrywide tour while your current, sold-out tour is still ongoing shows the Scotsman really cares about his Irish fans that missed out on the 2022 dates.

Nutini has returned to Ireland on several occasions over the years. In an interview with the singer ahead of a spate of shows several years ago, he expressed a great deal of fondness for Ireland.

paolo nutini travel

“I've lots of good memories of playing over here. I remember flying over for Arthur's Day shows. I squeezed in four different sets. At that point, a real buzz started. I've since come back and recorded parts of the last two records in Grouse Lodge in Westmeath," he told the Irish Independent .

He added: “While I was doing them I could go out in Moate and Athlone and have a good laugh in the bars and meet really nice people. The vibes have always been very good and I've always had a lot of fun."

Paolo Nutini at Eden Sessions 2024 review: Scottish sensation stuns with effortlessly cool set

After a successful music career spanning almost two-decades, Paolo Nutini has aged like a fine wine - maturing his style, developing a unique sound and honing his unparalleled vocals

Bursting onto the scene in the early 2000s with his first and poppiest album, few would have imagined that 19-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini would go on to become the effortlessly cool indie-rock powerhouse he is today.

It's fair to say he's come a long way from his New Shoes days but now, at 37, Paolo Nutini has absolutely honed his craft - and luckily for long-serving fans (unlike some artists with careers spanning almost two-decades) appears just as happy playing the crowd-pleasing tracks that made his name, something the Eden Sessions crowd delighted in during the star's Wednesday night (June 19) performance.

Taking to the Eden Sessions stage for the fourth time, Nutini peppered his set with sing-along classics, while playing a handful of edgy beats from his 2022 album, Last Night In The Bittersweet, a genre-defying epic that spans classic rock, post-punk and the experimental German rock of kosmische music.

Opening with Afterneath from the aforementioned album, which actually features a writing credit to filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, thanks to its seductive sampled discourse from 1993 movie True Romance, allowed Nutini and the band to ease into the set, teasing unparalleled vocals with hauntingly beautiful howls, which took me back to watching The Who at Eden last summer. Of course, Nutini is no stranger to weaving the spoken word throughout his music for dramatic effect, with Iron Sky, one of his most powerful hits, famously featuring Charlie Chaplin's impassioned 1940 speech, The Great Dictator.

After picking up the pace with his sexy 2014 track Scream (Funk My Life Up), Nutini threw a delightfully charming curveball, in the form of his upbeat rendition of Stuck in the Middle with You, paying tribute to its Scottish writers.

Acid Eyes and Through the Echoes followed, and were even more evocative thanks to the atmospheric surroundings of the Eden Sessions stage. New Shoes was an undisputed crowd-pleaser, giving onlookers the chance to flex their vocal chords, to the most charmingly intoxicating result. Though thanks to some clever tinkering in the years since its initial release, the 2006 hit came off cooler and edgier than ever.

Having been revelling in anticipation for the whole evening for my favourite track, Iron Sky, I had one of the rare gig experiences where another song became my favourite of the night. Not that Iron Sky wasn't the passionate, moving performance I expected it to be, but it was actually the vulnerability of Candy that left me with a lump in my throat and was what I found myself humming all the way home.

My only gripe with the evening was that a few of my favourite older tracks were absent from the setlist, Better Man, Jenny Don't Be Hasty and Last Request to name a few, but I appreciate with such a stellar back-catalogue of hits, not all can make it. And for those who questioned Nutini's spot on this year's Eden Sessions line-up (like I said this was his fourth appearance) - just don't. With a sell-out spectacular of a show like the one he put on last night, it's clear this star has plenty left to give, with fans from far and wide happy to travel for the experience.

Special mention to his support Prima Queen, all-female indie/alternative rock band fronted by song-writing duo and best friends Louise Macphail (Bristol) and Kristin McFadden (Chicago, USA). Being fairly fresh on the scene, they had their work cut out warming up the crowd, most of whom were respectfully just waiting for the main event, but did a great job with amusing anecdotes and catchy songs.

Still to play at this year’s Eden Sessions are: Suede and Manic Street Preachers, June 29; The National plus special guests This Is The Kit, July 2; Rick Astley plus special guests The Lightning Seeds, July 3; Tom Grennan, July 5; JLS plus special guest Tinchy Stryder, July 12.

However the insider went on to reveal that while the split was fairly recent, Amber has already found love again with Jordan Stephens, of Rizzle Kicks fame.

'Amber has found comfort in Jordan and the pair really click,' they continued, 'which is evident given the events they are attending together.'

The new couple were first seen at the launch of Alexa Chung's clothing line in May, and went on to attend the star-studded Glamour Women Of The Year Awards one month later.

MailOnline has contacted representatives of both Amber and Paolo for comment.

Meanwhile Paolo and Amber first began dating in 2014, after meeting on the set of the music video for his track, Diana.

They were spotted for the first time at Glastonbury Festival that June, after his eight-year romance with childhood sweetheart Teri Brogan came to an end.

However they went on to part ways in March last year - but reconciled once again that August after the singer confessed to Amber: 'Life is s**t without you.'

The singer has earned himself something of a wild reputation in recent weeks, after he appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court last month for drink driving.

The Last Request crooner was accused of driving while more than twice the legal limit in his hometown of Paisley, Renfrewshire, in February.

Howeve he denied the offence and was cleared at Paisley Sheriff Court after using what the court called 'the hip flask defence' - drinking after he had stopped driving.

His defence was 'post-incident drinking' and he claimed he consumed a large glass of whisky and some wine at his home before police arrived to breathalyse him.
