PGA Tour 'Signature Events' are now a key feature on the circuit's calendar in 2024 after a year of ' Designated Events ' in 2022-23.

The eight tournaments - which don't include the Majors , playoff events and Players Championship - feature smaller fields but increased prize purses and more FedEx Cup points (700 to the winner of each).

Three of the events - hosted by legends of the game - will feature a 36-hole cut and 20% of the total prize purse awarded to the winner while the remaining tournaments are no-cut competitions with the usual 18% prize handed to the champion.

The top-50 members of the reshuffled FedEx Cup standings from the 2022-23 season automatically qualified for all Signature Events this year, while 'The Next 10' - which includes the top-10 players on the 2024 FedExCup point list, not otherwise exempt via a higher priority category - will also receive a start.

For the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational, the Next 10 referred to those players who finished between 51-60 on the final 2022-23 FedExCup Fall points list.

To ensure every PGA Tour member has a chance of making it, there is another exemption category called the 'Swing 5.' Those who secure the highest number of FedEx Cup points in between Signature Events will book a tee time at the upcoming tournament. The winner of any PGA Tour event is also eligible for the remaining 'Signature' tournaments in 2024.

Without further ado, let's take a look at the eight Signature Events on the PGA Tour calendar in 2024.

What Are The Eight Signature Events On The PGA Tour In 2024?

The sentry (january 4-7).

Chris Kirk

Chris Kirk is the 2024 Sentry champion

Formerly known as The Sentry Tournament of Champions, the more concisely-named event kicked off the 2024 PGA Tour season at the monster-drive-enabling Kapalua Plantation Course in Hawaii.

As the first PGA Tour competition of 2024, The Sentry is the only Signature Event which did not include either qualifiers from The Next 10 or The Swing 5. Only PGA Tour winners from 2023 and the top-50 members from the 2022-23 FedExCup standings teed it up.

Chris Kirk won the 2024 running after an incredible overall score of 29-under par - one shot in front of Sahith Theegala and two ahead of Jordan Spieth .

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (February 1-4)

Wyndham Clark holds up the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am trophy in 2024

The biggest Pro-Am golf tournament in the world took place at two iconic courses in early February - Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course .

Despite being eagerly anticipated as arguably the first showpiece event of the season, several days of stormy weather majorly disrupted the tournament and caused it to be shortened to 54 holes.

Wyndham Clark was crowned the 2024 champion, though, thanks to a simply stunning 12-under-par effort on Saturday - the final day of competition.

The Genesis Invitational (February 15-18)

Hideki Matsuyama of Japan poses for a photo with the trophy after putting in to win on the 18th green during the final round of The Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club

Only the WM Phoenix Open separated the second and third Signature Events on the PGA Tour in 2024 during an undoubtedly exciting stretch of golf.

Tiger Woods hosted the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club shortly after Valentine's Day, with the 15-time Major champion briefly making hearts flutter in what was his first PGA Tour start of the year.

However, he was forced to withdraw due to illness during round two and was not able to be in attendance as former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama produced a masterful Sunday performance to take home the title.

Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (March 7-10)

Scottie Scheffler wears a red cardigan and holds the Arnold Palmer Invitational trophy

The Arnold Palmer Invitational precedes The Players Championship and often features a Major-like field in terms of its strength. Being that it is also now a Signature Event, too, many of the world's top-70 are involved on a Bay Hill course that can cause even the strongest player to crumble somewhat.

The event in Florida sees the winner receive a red cardigan sweater, in memory of Arnold Palmer - a tradition that began with the 2017 tournament after Palmer's death in 2016.

It's 2024 edition was won by Scottie Scheffler after the American romped to the title on 15-under, five shots clear of runner up, Wyndham Clark.

RBC Heritage (April 18-21)

Scottie Scheffler speaks to the media with his winner's jacket and trophy after winning the RBC Heritage

The RBC Heritage took place days after The Masters finished in mid-April at the wonderfully-picturesque Harbour Town Golf Links on the eastern coast of the United States. Both events were both won at a canter by Scheffler.

The 27-year-old's fourth win in five starts arrived a little later than planned, however, after storms caused a delay to the final round that meant Scheffler needed to come back on Monday and complete his final few holes.

Although he made a rare bogey, Scheffler still won by three and the handful of boats in the harbour produced the traditional celebratory horn blast once the final putt dropped.

Wells Fargo Championship (May 9-12)

Rory McIlroy holds the Wells Fargo Championship trophy

Although 2024 was the final Wells Fargo Championship ever - at least in name - given the financial-services company announced it would not be renewing its sponsorship of the tournament, there was a familiar winner to send the long-time backer off into the sunset with.

Rory McIlroy claimed his fourth title at Quail Hollow thanks to a runaway victory in the end, defeating overnight leader, Xander Schauffele by five shots thanks to a final round of six-under.

The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (June 6-9)

Scottie Scheffler and Jack Nicklaus holds the Memorial Tournament trophy

The PGA Tour's penultimate Signature Event took place smack bang in the middle of a thrilling run of golf, with a wholesome victory by Robert MacIntyre at the Canadian Open preceding it and the US Open following the week after.

Attempting to prepare for the difficult test that Pinehurst No.2 would present, the limited field was faced with a relentless Muirfield Golf Village, set up by tournament host Jack Nicklaus .

Scheffler once again showed his class, though, holding off Collin Morikawa by a shot despite carding a rare over-par final round.

Travelers Championship (July 20-23)

The 18th green during the final round of the 2021 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands

The final Signature Event of the season is due to take place one week after the U.S Open at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. Keegan Bradley took home the title and a check for $4 million after winning by three shots at the same tournament in 2023.

As the FedEx Cup playoffs come into view, this will be the players' last chance to make serious moves towards the top-10 and give themselves a better chance of making some serious money.

List of All the 8 PGA Signature Events And Their Previous Winners

The PGA Tour’s designated events are now called s ignature events. The eight signature events don’t have majors, Players Championship, or playoffs but still display an elevated purse, a smaller field, and more FedEx points (around 700 points). Three of these eight events have a cut and are hosted by golf legends. Also, these events reward the winner with 20% of the purse money. The rest of the events operate on a no-cut format with an 18% payout paid to the victor.

The top 50 FedEx Cup standings (2022–23 season) have automatically qualified for these events but the next 10, which are the top rankers on the 2024 FedEx points list, will also get a chance to play. According to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational, the next ten are those golfers who landed between 51 and 60 on the FedEx points list (2022–2023).

There’s another exemption category called ‘Swing 5’ to ensure that the PGA Tour players get an equal chance. Golfers who bag FedEx points between the signature tournaments get to play in the upcoming event. Apart from this, the winner of the PGA Tour events also gets a chance to play in the next signature tournament. Now, let’s take a look at these events:

The Sentry event previously used to include only the champions but it has become more open and inclusive this year. It takes place at the Kapalua Plantation Course in Hawaii and includes the top 50 FedEx standings and 2023 PGA Tour winners. Given that, the next 10 and ‘Swing 5’ exemptions can only be applied to in-between-season events and not the first event. Chris Kirk won the latest edition of the Sentry with a 29-under score .

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

This year, the weather conditions compelled the event authorities to conclude the event over 54-holes and Wyndham Clark was declared as the winner, thanks to retaining his first position on the leaderboard before the upper organizers took this decision.

The Genesis Invitational

The Genesis Invitational is hosted by Tiger Woods , and this year the golf world saw him teeing up for the event as his first tournament of the season. But shortly after he played, the golfer had to withdraw due to health reasons and flu-like symptoms. Hideki Matsuyama showed a world-class performance and triumphed the tournament this year.

Arnold Palmer Invitational

The event concluded last week, declaring Scottie Scheffler as the winner after competing against the top golfers at Bay Hill. The winner also received a red cardigan sweater as part of a ritual initiated after Arnold Palmer who sadly passed away in 2016.

RBC Heritage

The RBC Heritage takes place after the Masters Tournament in April. In the last edition, Matt Fitzpatrick claimed the title in South Carolina. The event displays a purse of $20 million and will provide 700 FedEx points to its winner.

Wells Fargo Championship

2024 will see the final year of the Wells Fargo Championship after the sponsor company has decided to discontinue financial backing of the tournament. Wyndham Clark won the last edition and it is to see if he can defend his title this year.

The Memorial Tournament

The Memorial Tournament is a perfect warm-up for the US Open. Last year, Viktor Hovland came out victorious before claiming the FedEx Cup title in August. The event will take place in the middle of this year in Ohio.

Travelers Championship

The final signature event announced Keegan Bradley as the winner in its last edition at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell. He won a $4 million payout and also received FedEx points. This will be the last opportunity of the year for golfers to gather points.

2024 PGA Tour schedule to feature new 'Signature Series,' with invitationals keeping 36-hole cuts

The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance - Final Round

The PGA Tour has reversed course on its plan to alter the makeup of its three invitational tournaments in 2024, sources told Golf Digest who furthermore added that much of that is the doing of Tiger Woods—who only on Tuesday was given a seat on the tour’s policy board.

The tour announced in March that the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament would be among eight no-cut designated events next year, but pushback from Woods—as well as from Jack Nicklaus and officials of the Arnold Palmer Invitational—has led to a compromise in which the three events will have a field of 80-90 players and a cut to the low 50 and ties and players within 10 shots of the lead. Woods is the host of the Genesis Invitational near Los Angeles. Nicklaus is founder and host of the Memorial in suburban Columbus, Ohio. The invitationals in recent years have had 120 players.

Sources not affiliated with the invitationals said the three events, with purses of $20 million (or possibly higher), could still pay a stipend to players who do not make the cut, similar to the Masters, which also has a cut to low 50 and ties, but no longer has a 10-shot rule. The Players also will have a cut with a full field of 144 players.

“The Masters was definitely the model for what eventually was decided,” said one tour player who has followed the discussions.

More From Golf Digest

Golfweek reported on Thursday that the 2024 schedule includes 80-player fields with a cut at the invitationals as part of a story on the proposed rundown of the entire schedule, which for the first time since 2013 features the full slate in a single calendar year. Other designated events, which will have smaller fields in the range of 60 players and no cut, will be the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship and Travelers Championship.

Sources say the collection of designated events will be called the "Signature Series." A spokesman for the PGA Tour said the tour would not comment, pending the formal announcement of the schedule.

At the Masters in April, Woods told reporters, “I certainly am pushing for my event to have a cut. I think that maybe the player-hosted events may have cuts. These are things that Jack and I are still in discussion with Jay and the board and the tour and the rest of the guys. That still is in flux.”

At the Memorial Tournament, Jon Rahm admitted that he had changed his mind about no-cut events, particularly at the invitationals. “I've gone back and forth on this issue,” Rahm said. “I, at first, was an advocate for no cut, and the more time has gone by I've become an advocate for a cut. So I think it's a part of the game, and I think it's an important part of the game, as harsh as it may be to cut out maybe only 20 players.”

Said one tour player on the prospect that the invitational would retain a cut despite a slightly smaller field: “Do you think it’s a coincidence that Tiger is now on the board and they have decided to keep cuts? Tiger won that battle.”

Woods was named a player director to the PGA Tour one day after joining with 40 other players in sending a letter to commissioner Jay Monahan on Monday requesting changes to the tour’s governance. Indications are that Woods prompted the drafting of the letter, which was first reported in the Washington Post.

The PGA Tour is expected to reveal the 2024 schedule to players during a meeting Tuesday at TPC Southwind prior to the FedEx St. Jude Invitational, the first of its three FedEx Cup playoff events. Golfweek reported that next year’s schedule features 47 events, eight of which occur in the fall after the Tour Championship that wraps up the FedEx Cup portion of the season. The season begins Jan. 4 at the no-cut designated event sponsored by Sentry. It no longer will be called the Tournament of Champions because it will invite winners from this year as well as the top 50 finishers in the FedEx Cup standings, which will be determined after next week’s opening playoff event in Memphis.

The schedule also includes a week off for the Olympic Golf competition the first week of August . A source knowledgeable of the schedule said the tour seeks to fill an open date in the fall the week of Nov. 7-10. The tour recently added the Black Desert Championship in Utah to be held Oct. 3-6.

The tour had previously intended to announce the 2024 schedule in late June, but was held up by a number of issues, including a delay in the sponsorship of the Heritage and Canadian Open, both sponsored by RBC. That deal reportedly was finalized today, with RBC renewing for one year. A report via Sports Business Journal said RBC is waiting to see how the recent framework deal that includes sponsorship of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia gets finalized before it proceeds with sponsorship beyond 2024.

Pga tour’s new signature-event concept put to the test immediately at pebble.

  • Rex Hoggard ,
  • Rex Hoggard

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – There’s something apropos about this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am being at the crossroads of the PGA Tour’s metamorphosis into a leaner, more focused product.

The event dates to 1937 and, up until a generation ago, was colloquially known simply as “The Clambake.” Those days changed a few decades ago as the event became more corporate and the celebrities, not the players, took over the spotlight.

But that all changes this week as “The Crosby” becomes the Tour’s signature-event proof of concept.

Last month’s Sentry in Maui was technically the season’s first signature event, but the yearly lid-lifter has always been a limited-field, no-cut perk for the stars. Pebble Beach is the first “full-field” signature event and the center of the circuit’s star-driven universe.

Gone from the iconic layout are most of the celebrities, many of the corporate types who rounded out foursomes and roughly half the field (with just 80 pros and 80 ams). They’ve all been replaced by the strongest field in decades and the game’s top performers vying for a bloated purse.

The Tour’s move to signature events was part of a schedule overhaul to stem the tide of top players joining LIV Golf, and the eight elevated tournaments – The Sentry, Pebble Beach, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, Memorial and Travelers Championship – were created with the notion of assembling the best players together more often.

The concept is simple but not foolproof.

“You never know, right? We can’t control who watches, how many people watch, how many people come to the tournament. You could have bad weather that people don’t come out. There’s a lot of factors that go into it,” Justin Thomas explained. “But for a golf fan, I would think that they would want to watch an event like this as much as they would want to watch a major because realistically, not all, but the majority of the same players are playing in it.”

That theory will be put to the test this weekend at Pebble Beach. Thanks to a late birdie on the 18 th hole, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler took a share of the Friday lead alongside young star Ludvig Åberg and Thomas Detry. Sixth-ranked Patrick Cantlay is a shot off the lead, followed by Thomas at 9 under to round out what is an objectively impressive leaderboard.

That’s the good news. But as Thomas pointed out, there are variables that are out of the Tour’s control, like a Sunday forecast that calls for rain and winds gusting to 45 mph. A Monday finish with a little-known champion isn’t exactly the walk-off Tour officials were hoping for this week.

The Tour needs these showcase events to resonate with the fans and the sponsors, who have been asked to dramatically increase their investment to keep pace with rising purses.

“Financially, the whole idea is that you’re delivering a premium product, and hopefully that’s what it shows, otherwise we’ll have to bounce back in a different direction,” Jordan Spieth told Front Office Sports. “You’re going to have a tournament that hopefully looks and feels better than any time you’ve had that tournament before, and that’s the idea to the sponsors. To do that eight times during the season, that would improve our product, create better competition, and honestly, create better stories as we come into the weekend.”

Players also caution that the signature-event concept needs time to evolve into what the Tour hopes will become that premium product. Much like the FedExCup, many contend the final version is still a few nips and tucks away.

“Obviously with anything new, if they start off well and there’s a lot of good storylines and things like that, then that’s great,” Rickie Fowler said. “I also think these are very new and this is a big change. I would say, in a way, there’s probably going to be some sort of tweaking or adjustments as they see how things play out. It’s very rare that things are perfect and say it’s amazing, we’re just going to stay there.”

One encouraging sign for the signature events is that every player who was eligible is in the field at Pebble Beach (not counting Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton who joined LIV Golf), which is a notable victory after the Tour removed the mandatory participation requirement this season.

But with the elevated fields come elevated expectations and this week’s Clambake is very much an early litmus test of the signature concept.

“This is all the top players in the world that are playing in these handful of events together each season,” Thomas said. “I would think that they will do well and that was at least the thought and goal behind it. I guess it is a little bit of you want it validated that it will work. I guess we’ll see.”

'we have a commissioner who is a chicken s---': how the rank-and-file feel about signature events, share this article.

pga tour signature collection

Not everyone is fond of the signature event structure that was implemented this season on the PGA Tour. Just ask veteran pro Nate Lashley, who pointed the blame directly at Commissioner Jay Monahan.

“Our No. 1 event is the Players and it’s a 144-man field. If that’s the best field all year, then why are these signature events that are supposed to be so good 70 (man fields)? It makes no sense,” Lashley said at the RBC Canadian Open last Saturday after making the cut. “Look at how good the Players was this year. When you have more competition, things stay tighter, more compact. When you’ve got fields with no cuts it spreads things out.

“But we have a commissioner who is a chicken shit and won’t stand up to a handful of guys, that’s what happens. You can’t tell me finishing top 10 in a limited field is similar to a 144- or 156-man field. It’s not even close. There’s no comparison. This is way harder.”

The series of eight Sig events was instituted to encourage the best players in the world to gather more often and play against each other for purses of at least $20 million against mostly limited fields, for jacked-up points and, more often than not, no-cut affairs. This week’s Memorial Tournament marks the seventh Sig event – this one does have a cut – with the Travelers Championship the finale of the Sig events in two weeks.

Count Mark Hubbard among the pros frustrated with the way the signature events are set up.

“It’s obviously set up to let in as few people as possible,” he argued. “They made the AON 10 and Swing 5 categories seem so dreamy but they didn’t tell us that the winner’s category was behind it and the world top 30 category was behind it. I think eight of the 10 (into the Memorial) would otherwise be exempt.” Lashley said he thought he should’ve been in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the first signature event that the lists were used for, off of his good play but was surprised to find that Matthieu Pavon, the winner of the Farmers Insurance Open, was counted in the Aon 5 and bounced him out of the field.

Hubbard said his biggest bone of contention is with the sponsor exemptions.

“Not even saying that I deserve one, but there are so many guys. I love Brandt Snedeker (who was given an invite this week at Jack’s Place along with Matt Kuchar) and he’s had an amazing career but he hasn’t played well in a long time. I don’t think he brings a lot to the tournament. He’s a great dude but Joel (Dahmen) is like the fourth-most famous guy in golf and he’s playing well again. Min Woo Lee, at Waste Management he had 2,000 people walking around dressed like him. The whole point of these changes was to make a better product and to make the sponsors happier. I’m sorry but Kuch and Sneds are not making (Memorial) a better product. Playing with 68 guys is not a better product,” Hubbard said. “I’m not saying I deserve a sponsor invite but if we’re already going to take those categories that were supposed to be the play-your-way-in category and put them at a disadvantage, you have to give sponsor invites to guys who are playing well and deserve it and are going to make the field better.”

He also expressed concern that the limited-field events make it difficult for new stars and unique characters to emerge.

“I know we are trying to keep the top guys here and we had to do something but to shrink the game the way they have, it’s tough because there are 70 guys on the Korn Ferry Tour that could come out and win tomorrow and I think we have just lost sight of that,” he said. “There are just so many people playing really good golf right now and the world has no idea who they are because the Tour has chosen to make it that way. I’m not talking about fringe players, I’m talking about guys that are super good.”

Hubbard understands that the Tour was forced to respond to the challenge of the upstart LIV Golf, but pointed out that there are some unforeseen consequences that need to be resolved.

“Everything we have done has been very reactionary. We didn’t have foresight and take the meetings 5-6 years ago (with the Saudis). So we had to be reactionary and when you are reactionary there are kinks that don’t get worked out. I think they will make the changes, some changes for next year, but who knows. The way it is now, they will reassess. Maybe they do what they did with Pebble Beach and say every field is 80. I’m overall fine with the smaller fields, I’m overall fine with the higher points – I think they might be too high but I know we had to do something, I know they had their metrics, which whatever. The not filling the field part really irks me. It goes against everything I believe this game is about.”

2024 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches

Kevin Streelman, a member of the Player Advisory Council, didn’t disagree with Hubbard and Lashley’s assessment of the field size for the signature events needing to be revisited.

“It’s the stupidest thing we’ve ever done,” said Streelman of 70-man fields with no cut or a limited one at three of the events. He’s of the belief that 120-man fields are the right size for these elevated events.

“I’d say we’re diligently working to try to appease the top players, our marketing partners, our fans and the integrity of the Tour and their competitions to deliver the greatest product and highlight the best players week after week. I don’t love the way it looks right now but that doesn’t mean much anyway since I’m not an elected board member. If our fans love 70-player signature events 8-10 times a year, then have at it,” he said.

Lanto Griffin, another PAC member, said productive discussions have been held to address inadequacies in field size.

“It makes no sense to have 156 this week and 68 next week. At minimum they should have 72, fill in the field based on current year FedEx Cup points. You’re having onesomes go off on a Thursday. It’s just not right. Everyone is on board on that and they’ll have a board meeting in June to discuss some of it.”

Griffin has been adamant from the start that the points, which are inflated for the signature events – worth 700 for a win compared to 500 for a regular event — are out of whack.

“If the Green Bay Packers were playing the Dallas Cowboys, you wouldn’t want that to be worth three wins and then Jacksonville Jaguars play the Titans and that’s worth one or half a win,” Griffin said. “Giving out all these points at the big events is not incentivizing the top players to play more.”

He also said the field size needs to be expanded to give Korn Ferry Tour and Q-School grads access to the bigger events. “If you’re a KFT grad this year, you’re not a PGA Tour player. You’re on the B-Tour,” he said.

Lashley, for one, doesn’t hold out much hope for the PAC to come to the rescue, and expressed concern that too much emphasis has been placed on catering to the stars.

“The PAC doesn’t do anything. Now we have a handful of player advisers but two or three of them that are on that are top players using their leverage against the Tour. It’s terrible, they don’t represent the rest of the Tour; they represent themselves,” he said. “We were on a call with Jordan (Spieth) and he wouldn’t even give us an honest answer. It was like Jordan, you know the points are wrong. He was like, well, that’s what the analytics show. He’s been trained or someone told him to say that.”

While it’s never easy to satisfy an entire membership, there’s still time to fix some of the kinks in field size and how to qualify for the signature events before the 2025 season debuts in Maui.

TOUR grants special exemption for Tiger at signature events

The PGA TOUR policy board created an exemption for Tiger Woods to play the circuit's eight signature events based on his "exceptional lifetime achievement," commissioner Jay Monahan announced, per Golf Digest's Ryan Herrington .

Woods is one of six players on the policy board, but it's unclear if he voted on the matter.

The 82-time winner has already earned lifetime membership on TOUR, but it doesn't include signature events due to their specific qualification criteria. This season's signature event schedule included the Sentry Tournament of Champions, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am, the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, the Memorial, and Travelers Championship.

Woods hosts the Genesis Invitational and withdrew from the event due to illness after making his season debut. Woods said in 2023 that he hopes to play one tournament a month but hasn't done so this season. He competed in the Masters in April, then missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and last week's U.S. Open.

The 15-time major winner already announced that July's Open Championship at Royal Troon will be his final event of the year.

Woods, 48, has played nine official TOUR events since a car accident in 2021. His most recent win came at the 2019 ZOZO Championship.

PGA Tour announces updates to Signature Events, gives Tiger Woods lifetime exemption

C ROMWELL, Conn. — Rumors that an announcement regarding a deal between the PGA Tour and the PIF that operates LIV Golf would be made on Tuesday proved to be unfounded, but the coming out of a Policy Board/PGA Tour Enterprises Board joint meeting in Hartford before the start of this week's Travelers Championship, changes to the eight Signature Events starting in 2025 have been made.

The Signature Events are The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship.

The first change is an increase in the minimum field size for these tournaments to 72. With massive purses, players who qualify for the Signature Events nearly always play in them, but starting next season, there will be an alternate list, so if a player withdraws before the event begins, his spot will be given to the highest-ranked player on the Aon Next 10 list who is not already in the field.

The second modification is a special tribute to the legendary Tiger Woods -- a sponsor exemption for lifetime achievement into all the Signature Events. This is a significant recognition of his 82 PGA Tour wins, including eight victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and five at the Memorial Tournament, both of which are Signature Events.

So, starting in 2025, Woods has spots locked up in the field at the Masters and PGA Championship as a past champion, along with exemptions into the field at the PGA Tour's marquee events. His five-year exemption into the U.S. Open earned by winning the 2019 Masters ran out after the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. However, the USGA gave the three-time U.S. Open winner a special exemption into last week's tournament at Pinehurst No. 2. As a past champion at the British Open, Woods is exempt into the 2024 tournament at Royal Troon and all future British Opens until he turns 60.

2024 Travelers Championship live stream, TV schedule, channel, where to watch, tee times, golf coverage, radio

A busy three-week stretch in professional golf comes to an end this week in connecticut.

travelers-championship-signage-g.jpg

The final signature event on the PGA Tour playing calendar takes place this week at the 2024 Travelers Championship. Taking to TPC River Highlands once again, 71 players will vie for the $20 million purse following a dramatic conclusion to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Following his tough defeat to Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy has decided to pull his name out of the hat , leaving room for others to possibly contend. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is sure to find his name near the top of the leaderboard over the weekend despite a disappointing U.S. Open.

Failing to card a single under-par round in a tournament for the first time in his professional career, Scheffler looks to get back on the wagon and capture his sixth victory of the season. A win at TPC River Highlands would be his first at a course which saw Xander Schauffele reign supreme in 2022.

The world No. 2 continues to display his consistency on a weekly basis and has now notched four straight top 10s dating back to the Wells Fargo Championship. With plenty of form in tow, Schaffuele seeks his second win of the season and second trophy at the Travelers Championship.

Others like Ludvig Åberg, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth, Max Homa, Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Thomas look for their first victories of the year. Meanwhile, U.S. Open contender Matthieu Pavon, Wyndham Clark and Hideki Matsuyama hope to add their hardware collection.

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler took two minutes to celebrate a big win at the Memorial, and then it was on to the next challenge — even though the next one is among the biggest in golf.

He arrived at Pinehurst No. 2 for the U.S. Open wearing a target he has had on since he began his latest tear that left no doubt who’s the best in golf right now. Scheffler has won five of his last eight tournaments — the Masters, The Players Championship and three of the PGA Tour’s “signature” events with the strongest fields.

The gap between Scheffler and everyone else in the world ranking is at a margin not seen since the peak years of Tiger Woods.

“Every week we play, he seems to build a bigger lead, and somehow make the mountain even taller for all of us to climb,” PGA champion Xander Schauffele said Tuesday. “That’s all he’s been doing, and hats off to him for being so consistent and playing at such a high level for such a long time.”

For Scheffler, it all goes back to the hats.

In his eyes, his collection of worn, sweaty, grungy, disgusting hats he keeps in the gym at his home in Dallas is what reminds him of how he got there.

Tiger Woods putts as his son Charlie, watches on the seventh hole during a practice round for the U.S. Open golf tournament Tuesday, June 11, 2024, in Pinehurst, N.C. (AP Photo/George Walker IV)

“When I was a kid and I got a cool hat, I would wear it the whole summer and I would sweat through the hat,” Scheffler said. “And they’re just disgusting and gross and I hang ‘em in my gym. So when I’m back there working out, I remind myself that just because I got to where I am now, it wasn’t just because it happened.

“I remember all the work that I put in, all the balls that I hit, all the amount of time I spent out there sweating in the sun and putting in the time and the effort in order to become good.”

No, this didn’t happen overnight. It just seems that way.

So many players heaped so much praise on Scheffler and what he has done the last two years and particularly the last two months. It reminded him in a way of being picked for his first Ryder Cup team, and the confidence he was shown before he had won on the PGA Tour.

This is more about awe.

“Undoubtedly the best player in the world at the minute by a long way,” Rory McIlroy said. “It’s up to us to try to get to his level.”

It hasn’t always been this easy for Scheffler, and it still feels like hard work to him. His putting got so far out of whack last year that he brought on English putting coach Phil Kenyon to help work his way out of the problems.

He is coping with being a father — his first child, Bennett, was born just over a month ago. Scheffler is getting wearying talking about his arrest and brief jail time before the second round of the PGA Championship last month (he still shot 66) over charges he wasn’t following police directions. The charges were dropped. He tied for eighth.

And he presses on, driven by the sheer joy of competition, and it must be even more fun when he leaves with the trophy.

But the target on his back is one that he doesn’t see, and he acts like it’s not there.

“When we start the tournament week, we’re all at even par and it’s not like anybody is out there playing defense,” Scheffler said.

He will be in the U.S. Open’s traditional group of the top three players in the world on Thursday, putting him with Schauffele (No. 2) and McIlroy (No. 3).

“They’re not going to be saying weird stuff to me out on the golf course or trying to block my putt from going in the hole,” he said. “We all kind of got to go out there and play our game. As far as a target on my back, even if there was, there’s really not much we can do in the game of golf. Most of it is against the golf course and playing against yourself.”

Pinehurst No. 2 figures to be the real target this week for Scheffler and everyone else. Wyndham Clark, the defending champion, was concerned when he arrived that the domed greens — a Donald Ross signature — already were firm and scary.

The field no longer includes former Masters champion Jon Rahm, the last player to occupy the No. 1 ranking before Scheffler took over. He withdrew on Tuesday.

Rahm developed an infection in the toes of his left foot last week, had to withdraw from a LIV Golf event in Houston and decided it wasn’t worth the risk of affecting his swing or causing another injury by playing.

Before departing, Rahm joined the chorus of players amazed at Scheffler’s level of play.

“Every year or every so many years, there’s been great ball strikers that come up,” Rahm said. “But when you start getting compared to Tiger and things that Tiger has done, that’s when you know you are in a level that is quite special.”

He noted Scheffler winning five times before the U.S. Open, a feat not achieved in 44 years. Rahm also noted where Scheffler has won — Augusta National, TPC Sawgrass, Bay Hill, Muirfield Village, Harbour Town.

“You’re basically a Tiger Woods season,” he said. “It’s fantastic to see.”
