New Ping Tour Eye Waterproofs

Ping have recently taken the design and manufacture of the their Apparel and Waterproofs “back in house” in order to align the values of its golf clothing with their award winning hardware.  

The new Tour Eye Jacket and Trousers are the first waterproofs to benefit from this “in house” philosophy. And Ping have searched down proven out door fabrics and partnered with a leader in the field to create this new super lightweight, stretchable, exceptionally breathable and of course waterproof garment.

So what’s new about the jacket? Well it’s a 3 layer construction which means theres no annoying mesh liner to get finger nails or watches caught in and tear. The fabric is highly waterproof (to 20,000 mm) to match the performance of market leading jackets. Yet it’s extremely breathable and very durable, to resist wear in key areas like where you carry your bag. There’s also additional chest vents to increase breathability, a 3 year waterproof guarantee and we love the soft cuffs.

Tour Pro’s can be incredibly demanding. But Ping have taken direct instruction from world number 13 Louis Oosthuizen through out the design process. Which has meant they’ve created a waterproof suit that’s capable of keeping the best players in the world dry and comfortable on the course.

While the only clouds at the 2016 Ryder Cup were the metaphorical ones hovering over the defeated Europeans at Hazeltine Golf Club, waterproofs are an essential kit for the golfer.

As all golfers playing in autumn know, rain is only ever a few minutes away – not having waterproofs can kill a round quicker than a dose of the shanks. And unlike the 24 European and American pros who competed for the biennial trophy, we mere mortals must purchase our rain-retardant gear ourselves.

Now, the all-weather golfer has specific requirements for their water-retardant jacket and slacks. For one, their swing should not be impeded by the jacket especially around the armpits. Also the trousers should be quick to slip on standing up in a downpour while wearing their potentially bulky golf shoes.

The following sets of golf waterproof jackets and trousers have been tested during torrential rain on a waterlogged North London course – the only time we’ve ever booked a tee time while hoping it rains cats and dogs.

1. Ping Tour Eye Jacket and Trousers: £169.95 and £137.95, Golf Online

Breathable, lightweight and waterproof, this jacket does not affect the most fragile of golf swings (like ours). And it’s probably the most stylish waterproof reviewed – it affords the user fully waterproof pockets, without the hefty price tag. In addition to the trousers being easy to take on and off, they’re also breathable.

2. Galvin Green Addison Waterproof Jacket and ALF trousers: £259.95 and £189.95, American Golf

Galvin Green, the official Ryder Cup provider of waterproofs, uses the super-dependable, breathable Gore-Tex material to make all its waterproofs. The trousers and jacket are easy to put on and the half-zip jacket allows golfers to tighten cuffs and play with minimal resistance. In addition to the trouser hems being adjustable, they’re reinforced to prevent them ripping or rotting. While the most expensive choice, the set is hard-wearing, light and folds up small in your golf bag.

3. Lyle & Scott Yarrow Jacket and Nairn Waterproof Trousers: £250 and £125, Lyle & Scott

This jacket is a fitted and stylish choice, as would be expected from a brand well known on the high street as well as the fairway. It’s also one of the heavier and warmer jackets we tested – it may prove too hot for those who prefer layers under a waterproof jacket, as its wetsuit-like wrist cuffs can be sweat-inducing. The trousers prove more breathable, fitted with waterproof zips and with a slim fit worthy of Milroy or Fowler. If you regularly play links courses in strong winds such as Royal Troon or St Andrews, this could be the best option for you.

4. Sunderland Vancouver Jacket and Trousers: £79.95 and £54.95, The Golf Shop Online

A relatively cheap option from a tried and tested brand, these waterproofs are good at holding out against the heaviest of rain while offering an impressive array of colour combinations from conservative blacks and blues to lime green and luminescent yellow. The trouser pockets are fitted with Velcro allowing for quicker access than other zip options.

5. FootJoy DryJoys Tour XP Jacket and Trousers: £159 and £125, Function18

This jacket from FootJoy is lightweight and well-fitted, with the ability of packing away into a smaller than average golf bag. Both the jacket and trousers are breathable without losing their ability to keep out water. The trouser legs narrow at the hems to avert the worry of fabric being dragged through the mud.

6. Callaway Green Grass 3.0 Jacket and Trousers: £84.99 and £64.99, Function 18

These are the cheapest waterproofs reviewed, but the Callaway option offers comfort and freedom of movement. The cut of the jacket is not the most flattering with an inability to hold up to the same amount of rain as the jackets above but the trousers are trustworthy with an ability to tighten the waist for those who fluctuate in weight. For those on a budget (again, relative), this would be the best option.

7. Oscar Jacobson WPS Mickey Tour Jacket and Trousers: £94.99 and £119.99, Clubhouse Golf Direct

The jacket holds its own against waterproofs twice the price with waterproof zips, and it’s lightweight. The trousers wide cut style help avoid any unnecessary shoe mud being smeared on the internal lining. The waist band has a tacky surface which prevents the trousers slipping down. The material used to make both jacket and trousers produces little noise during the swing – avoiding any unwanted distraction to the player – although the trousers can make the leg sweat slightly.

The Verdict: Golf waterproofs

Our pick of the bunch is the Ping Tour Eye which does all you need while looking fly enough for Europe Ryder Cup rookie and Ping ambassador Andy Sullivan. Our advice: don’t rush to buy waterproofs, as getting the wrong ones is not a cheap mistake to make. Even if you don’t have the chance to test-run them on the course, ask to swing a club while wearing them. Also see how long it takes you to put them on while wearing your golf shoes.

Ping Outerwear Sizing Question

I've purchased some PING outerwear in the last few days, but based of my location it will take several weeks for it to arrive. With that said I have no way to judge Ping's outerwear sizing, and wonder if I ordered too small of garments. I ordered the Zero Gravity jacket and shirt, the Norse Primaloft II, Elden Fleece, Breaker Full Zip jacket, and Herman Pullover.

My Ping shirts are size small and fit just about perfect, so I ordered small in all the outerwear listed above with the exception of the Norse (only available in medium). I've seen a sizing chart that suggests that the shirts run one size bigger than the outerwear, i.e. a shirt in size small is equivalent to a medium outerwear top.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, as I would need to re-order larger sizes soon before the sales end or they run out of stock.

Ping Polos are sized one size larger than their jackets and tops. The question is whether you are on the cusp between small & medium. If you have a 38" chest, they both might fit you.

Unteachable

All of the more recent outerwear I have from ping seem to fit ok in the shoulders and sleeve length but snug in the torso and waist in my normal size. Kind of a euro style. If you have a big gut, size up

I don't have any experience with any of those items in a size Small, but, I did try on a Ping Breaker in size M. I felt a size S would have been better for me (there wasn't one for me to try). I base this on my experience with the Ping Tour Eye Rain Jacket. The size M is quite roomy, and, I think the size S fits me better, - Yes, I have both. I, also, have a Ping Nelson (half sleeve rain shirt, fully lined, 3 layer Pertex Shield), and, that fits similar to the size S, Tour Eye. fwiw, my chest is 38 inches. I think you should be fine with size S, but, if you want to wear extra layers underneath, you might want to size up.

Oops, I will find out about the Breaker in a size S, and, a Zero Gravity Short Sleeve Rain Pullover. The Zero Gravity short sleeve should work better for me than the Nelson in warm weather, though, I expect them to similarly sized.

A bit late here, but I'd say the size of Ping is pretty much the same as Adidas for their polos and outerwear. I'm a M in both and they fit exactly the same

I have ordered and received in a size Small, Breaker Jacket, Zero Gravity short sleeve, Norse - fully insulated, and, an Elden. I would say the Breaker, Zero Gravity and Norse fit similarly in chest area. The sleeves on the Breaker, are quite snug on the fore arms. The Norse fits fine, and, lack of a wrist adjustment/elastic, doesn't appear to be an issue with me, I tried it on with a long sleeve, and, the sleeves seemed to make the length of the sleeves ok. The Zero Gravity ss fit similar to my Ping Nelson/Tour Eye jackets (fwiw, a little looser than my Kjus Dexter - size 48).

The Elden is a bit snug, but, with enough stretch to work ok. The fit is more like base layer like, and, if I were to really wear it as a middle layer, I would probably need to size up. Length is quite generous, but, because of the snug fit, it doesn't hang down. It can be pulled down for more coverage, but, most likely, I will let it bunch up above my hips.

fwiw, 38 chest, 32 waist

The Zero Gravity is an excellent jacket that is perfect for the golfer who likes lightweight outerwear and an understated look. Packs away very small so ideal for the golfer who carries. I would have like belt loops and a slightly more fitted cut on the Tour Eye Pant but they did the job of keeping me dry. Easy to put on and take off thanks to the zips on the legs and soft, spacious pockets. The Hudson is a really good mid layer than looks good, fits well and keeps you warm and is shower proof. Ideal garment for golf in the UK! The Harris is an impressive polo shirt that looks good and performs well, as were the Lennox trousers.

Subtle but appealing traditional style, excellent performance and some cutting-edge products like the impressive Zero Gravity jacket.

Tour Eye Trousers are a touch baggy and don't have belt loops.

The Stone colour on the Zero Gravity jacket was classy, understated and will go with pretty much any outfit. Standard black waterproof trousers that goes well with the other garments in the Ping range while the Harris polo is a really stylish, classy shirt that will appeal to a very broad range of golfers. Nice details on the collar and placket too.

The Zero Gravity jacket offered an excellent fit - it allowed plenty of freedom throughout the swing without feeling loose and baggy. Arm length was perfect for me but for taller golfers it might come up be a little short. Cuffs could have been a bit tighter as the heavy rain got under the material by the end of the round. I would have preferred a more fitted style on the Tour Eye pant but the extra room means they can easily be worn over trousers. No belt loops mean you do need to get the right size to avoid having to hitch them up every few holes. Variety of leg lengths caters for tall and larger golfers. Some golfers might find the material a little too close fitting on the Harris polo but I found it spot on.

All the garments were very comfortable – the jacket was incredibly lightweight. It will appeal to the golfer who likes to feel like they aren’t really wearing outerwear. The softness of the material, especially on the trousers and the polo shirt, made them very comfortable indeed.

Performance

The jacket stood up to the heavy rain at Old Head very well. Rain did get in around the collar and cuffs but otherwise it kept me dry in what were some of the most extreme conditions I’ve played in. The trousers too kept me totally dry in the heavy rain and didn’t get hot thanks to the breathable fabric.

PING Tour Eye Waterproof Trousers

Hello Everyone, Sorry to start a thread on this but not getting much help from AG or Ping about these Trousers. Basically, my lovely girlfriend bought me the PING Tour Eye Waterproof Jacket for my birthday and I was wanting to buy the matching trousers myself to match the complete suit. AG only have one picture online of these trousers and don't actually stock the item in store, they only do online sales for the Trousers. I was wondering if anyone has already bought these and can confirm whether these are suited to what I'm looking for. Ping themselves Online call the trousers; PING Tour Eye Over Trousers, so I am a little confused. Basically I am looking for Waterproof Trousers that you can wear as normal without wearing on top of other trousers, and hoping someone on here has the exact PING Tour Eye Waterproof Trousers and can shed more light on this and whether they would suit what I am looking for? Thanks, Paul

Can't help with the Ping trousers but have a look at Proquip Aquastorm PX1 trousers. They are lined and have belt loops so can be worn without trousers underneath. Totally waterproof with a 3 year guarantee.
