Pixies announce 2023 UK and European tour

Tickets go on sale later this week.

By Tom Skinner

Pixies have confirmed the release date for 'Doggerel', their eighth album and first in three years.

Pixies have announced a UK and European headline tour for 2023. The alt-rock Boston band are due to release their eighth studio album, Doggerel , on September 30 via BMG ( pre-order/pre-save here ). Early next year, they’ll hit the road for a run of concerts across Europe and the United Kingdom. Pixies will begin the stint in Stockholm on February 21 before making further stops in Oslo (February 22), Copenhagen (25), Berlin (26) and other cities throughout that month and into March. The group are scheduled to touch down in the UK on March 17, when they’ll take to the stage at the Forum in Birmingham. Gigs will then follow at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff (March 18) and the Roundhouse in north London (20/21). Tickets go on general sale at 8am BST/ 9am CEST this Friday (September 30) –  you’ll be able to purchase yours here . Check out the full UK/European live itinerary in the announcement post below.

Pixies announced the forthcoming Doggerel back in April, and have already shared three singles from the record: ‘Vault of Heaven’, ‘Dregs of the Wine’ and ‘There’s a Moon On’. You can see the full tracklist beneath. 01. ‘Nomatterday’ 02. ‘Vault of Heaven’ 03. ‘Dregs of the Wine’ 04. ‘Haunted House’ 05. ‘Get Simulated’ 06. ‘The Lord Has Come Back Today’ 07. ‘Thunder & Lightning’ 08. ‘There’s a Moon On’ 09. ‘Pagan Man’ 10. ‘Who’s More Sorry Now?’ 11. ‘You’re Such a Sadducee’ 12. ‘Doggerel’

Describing the album, the follow-up to 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie , frontman Black Francis said: “We’re trying to do things that are very big and bold and orchestrated. The punky stuff, I really like playing it but you just cannot artificially create that shit. There’s another way to do this, there’s other things we can do with this extra special energy that we’re encountering.” Guitarist Joey Santiago added: “This time around we have grown. We no longer have under two-minute songs. We have little breaks, more conventional arrangements but still our twists in there.”

Pixies: Roundhouse, London – live review

pixies tour london 2023

Pixies Roundhouse, London 20th March 2023

Pixies pack 37 songs into two hours at a sold-out Roundhouse gig that showcases absolutely everything the band are about.

Blame Kurt Cobain. By nicking and mainstreaming the loud-quiet-loud dynamic of, say, Gigantic, then crediting Pixies, he effectively reduced them to one-trick ponies in popular culture.

But the band have always been so much more, so much weirder, than simple sudden changes in volume and intensity. Their debut EP begins with a stuttering twangy surf guitar lick. It features what sounds like a folk song on meth about the “son of incestuous union”, and a pumped-up polka partly sung in Spanish.

All three songs (Caribou, a jazzed-up Nimrod’s Son, and Isla de Encanta) show up at Roundhouse tonight in a 37-song set that seems intent on showing absolutely everything that Pixies are about. There’s the pretty ’50s pop with its sweet harmonies, strummed acoustic guitar, and twangy Duane Eddy leads. (Take a bow, Death Horizon, Ana, and the eternally sunny Here Comes Your Man). There are the bizarre lyrics, often barked. (Please stand up, “Your bone’s got a little machine” or “There was a guy/ An underwater guy who controlled the sea”.)

There are the massively influential, massively varied indie rock anthems with their unmistakable basslines, male-female vocals, liquid guitar solos, punky energy, and (yes) tonal twists and turns. (Join the seemingly endless queue, Debaser, Gouge Away, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Wave Of Mutilation, Where Is My Mind?, Planet Of Sound. No Gigantic, though. Sorry, Kurt.)

And then there’s the continued need to keep creating: since 2014, they’ve released four albums. The latest, last year’s Doggerel, features heavily at the first of their two sold-out Roundhouse shows. Rightly so. It’s excellent.

Dregs Of The Wine has all the hallmarks of a classic: the memorable Black Francis lyric (“Took the boat to the Hacienda”), that Paz Lenchantin bass jangle and beautiful vocal harmonising, a Joey Santiago guitar solo that sounds simultaneously retro and futuristic, David Lovering’s deceptively simple drumming, the ebbs and flows.

Live, as on the record, There’s A Moon On is direct, immediate, and hugely moshable. (Plus the line “Make like a cock, cock-a-doodle-doo” must have been written for audiences to scream along to.) And Nomatterday — with its spoken vocal, shouted refrain of “Don’t. Waste. Your. Time. On. Me!”, another Santiago solo seemingly beamed in from outer space, and complete transformation halfway through — is easily one of their best.

The support act, Manchester’s The Slow Readers Club, are equally keen to showcase their own excellent new album. Released a month ago, Knowledge Freedom Power contributes two tracks — the shimmering motorik groover Modernise; the plaintive, then explosive Lay Your Troubles On Me — to a set that, like the headliners, highlights their full range.

Played back to back, the pounding All I Hear and more intricate, more pensive You Opened Up My Heart especially show off the light and shade of Aaron Starkie’s voice. The expansive I Saw A Ghost and Lunatic were written for venues much larger than Roundhouse, while Forever In Your Debt is moody, ever-evolving, and ultimately uplifting.

Touchingly, Starkie dedicates it to Pixies, who return the favour with their moody, ever-evolving, and ultimately uplifting set. Carefully sequenced, it builds in momentum and impact as slower, quieter, brighter songs like Cactus, All The Saints, Motorway To Roswell, and Get Simulated make way for the heavier, harder, punkier stuff, all delivered in the same unfussy way. For all the power of their songs and the force of their playing, the individual Pixies are remarkably low-key. Nobody really says anything. Santiago and Lovering have their caps pulled down low, as if they don’t want to be seen.

The only vague concessions to anything vaguely resembling showing off are Black Francis’ sunglasses (that never come off) and the red flower on the smiling and waving Lenchantin’s headstock. (But that’s the Pixies way. Short-term bass player Kim Shattuck remembered being told off for jumping into the crowd during a show. She was let go not long afterwards)

But who really cares whether the singer points and waves and poses when the songs are so good, so plentiful, and still so mind-altering.

The full-length will feature recent releases ‘There’s A Moon On’, ‘Vault of Heaven’ as well as the band’s latest offering ‘Dregs of the Wine’, which offers something new – a first writing credit for guitarist Joey Santiago.

He commented, “I guess I was in kind of a zombie state, just playing. After I stopped playing I put it down and went, ‘Well, that was a fucking waste of time, what a piece of shit I am.’ I beat myself up a lot, but my girlfriend, unbeknownst to me, was recording me. She played it back to me and I go, ‘Fuck! Hold on a second here! This stuff is good!’”

Brilliant. I saw them last in 1989 and was so happy when my wife bought me a ticket to this gig for my 47th! The band played for around 2 hours and covered tunes from just about every album although i have to say i have barely listened to that orange one so wouldn't know if they played something from that mistake.

They transported me back to my youth for two hours even if as an auld cnut i just stood there either nodding my head back and forth or tapping my foot or, during more energetic moments, a combination of both. I really enjoying the performance far more than it showed, honest.

I was surprised to see so many what i thought were youngsters in the Tonhalle listening to a band who formed when many of them weren't even twinkles in the eyes of their hopeful padres, but their energy made up for my lack of. Thanks to them. I was even more surprised to see Mosh pit contributions by guys older than me. Respect. You energetic cnuts. Love it.

They played enough off the Surfa Rosa and Come on Pilgrim LPs that i went home a seriously happy man who hasn't stopped talking about and reliving the gig since.

So fucking good. I hope I'm alive when they play again here.

The technicians prepare the stage. The pedal set of Joey is really impressive, he needs himself a sheet of paper to remember all the set-ups.

The Pixies come on stage silently, without saying a word. From the first moment they give me the impression of being tired and without much energy to give to the audience.

Black Francis has grown in weight and wears a black dress.

Paz Lenchantin stands on the right side, she has a rose sticked to her bass and she is quite a humble figure. The same can be said of Joey Santiago, who is wearing a coppola cap and hardly interacts with the audience. Probably the most lively character on stage is David Lovering who does a great job in the rythmic part.

In the song Rock Music. It is almost impossible to hear Black Francis’ voice. Maybe there’s something wrong with the microphone and the sound levels. Maybe he just does not have any longer the voice for this type of song.

During this tour the band plays 11 of the songs from the new album Beneath the Eyrie, which are quite tame in my opinion.

Another choice I don’t understand is that they deliver most of their hits in the first part of their set, leading to a boring and empty second part.

They should have spread the hits more evenly throughout the set, to keep the audience awake.

All the classic are amazing and I can't resist from singing together with them.

Vamos is the longest song of the set and Joey finally pulls out some trick and plays a bit with the jack of his guitar waving it around and creating some noise.

At the end we are not even sure we will get an encore. Francis looks exhausted. The group plays a little scene on stage where Paz convinces the other to play one last song. Bone Machine.

Pixies to play ‘Bossanova’ and ‘Trompe Le Monde’ in full at UK and European residencies

The tour will kick off in Spring 2024

Black Francis of Pixies performs at The Van Buren on May 08, 2023

Pixies have announced a new UK and European tour, in which they will celebrate their ‘Bossanova’ and ‘Trompe Le Monde’ albums.

  • READ MORE: Pixies – ‘Doggerel’ review: still the alt-rock gold standard

The tour is set to kick off in Spring 2024, and will see the alt-rock icons perform their third studio album ‘Bossanova’ (1990) and follow-up ‘Trompe Le Monde’ album (1991) in full.

‘Bossanova’ was introduced by the singles ‘Velouria’ and ‘Dig for Fire’, and marked the first LP following the success of their hit second album ‘Doolittle’ . It also was the first to feature no songs written by bassist Kim Deal, as she formed her other band The Breeders around the time it was written.

‘Trompe Le Monde’ arrived the following year, and featured four singles: ‘Planet Of Sound’, ‘Alec Eiffel’, ‘Letter To Memphis’ and ‘Head On’. Like its predecessor, it also contained less contributions from Deal than seen in the first two LPs, and marked the band’s final studio album, before their subsequent break-up two years later.

Starting with three back-to-back live dates in Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre on March 8, 9 and 10, the four-piece will then make stops in Manchester — for a three-night residency in the Albert Hall between March 12 and 14 — and another three-night stint in London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town between March 16 and 18.

The UK shows will be followed by three nights in both Amsterdam (March 20-22) and Paris (March 25-27). Tickets for all dates go on sale this Friday (June 9) at 9am local time and will be available here .

Currently, the rock veterans are embarking on their ongoing tour of North America . The live dates come in support of their latest album, 2022’s ‘Doggerel’ , and features an appearance at the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee on June 18.

Other stops include a show in Washington D.C. later today (June 6), as well as gigs in Dallas (June 24), New York (August 21-22), Chicago (August 30-31) and Seattle (September 8). Find a full list of US tour dates and any remaining tickets here .

Speaking with NME back in September , the band discussed their approach to writing ‘Doggerel’, and explained how the members took the LP more seriously as they wanted it to stand out from their already-extensive discography.

“I’ve never been that prepared for a recording session in my life. This time I felt like: ‘Jesus, it’s been two years since we last got together and this is what? Our fucking 100th album or whatever the fuck? I thought I owed it to the band and the producer to come up with some goods,” frontman Black Francis said.

Pixies. Credit: Tom Oxley

“We’re getting better at what we do,” he added. “Gradually over the years we’ve been building up different kinds of muscles and we have a cosmopolitan sophistication that we’re able to tap into on this record more than we’ve been able to before. We’re able to get a little more cinematic.”

In other Pixies news, earlier this year the band apologised to fans after it was discovered that their hit 1988 song ‘Where Is My Mind?’ was turning off some people’s morning alarms on their phones.

“For the past few months, I could not figure out why on random days, with seemingly no reason, sometimes my alarm would either not go off, or turn itself off very quickly,” wrote one Redditor affected by the issue.

“Well this morning, I woke up about 5 minutes before my alarm went off, and I have cracked the code,” he added, proceeding to explain that the device he had contained voice-recognition software, which interpreted Francis’ exclamation of ‘Stop’ in the track to be an instruction to turn off any scheduled alarms.

Pixies, 2024 line-up

Pixies have announced an extensive UK and European tour, and shared the fourth single from their upcoming album The Night the Zombies Came .

The band say of new single Motoroller , “This is one of those kinds of songs where there’s little threads you can follow and they take you somewhere. But they’re not required for the experience. You can just start fishing around in the lyrics, and maybe you won’t find exactly what the story is, but you’ll find a story related to the city of Berlin. So just have fun with the clues that are there.” As with its predecessor, 2022's  Doggerel , The Night the Zombies Came was produced by English producer Tom Dalgety at Guilford Sound in Vermont: it's the first Pixies album to feature the band's first British member, bassist Emma Richardson (Band Of Skulls).

Set for an October 25 release via BMG, the album is described as the most "cinematic" collection of the Boston band's career, with frontman Black Francis stating, “Fragments that are related and juxtaposed with other fragments in other songs. And in a collection of songs in a so-called LP, you end up making a kind of movie.”

Express Check-In: Pan Pacific London General Manager Anne Golden

The 33-year London resident shares, where to find awe-inspiring city views, some under-the-radar activities and the essential British pub.

Golden, a long-time London resident, knows the city very well.

If you want advice on London , Anne Golden can help. Golden serves as the regional vice president of Operations for the U.K. and North America and the general manager of Pan Pacific London , one of the hottest new hotels in the city and a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star winner.

The 33-year London resident says she loves the city. “It feels as if you are part of a global community, and there’s always something new to explore and experience,” she says.

To help your explorations in the U.K. capital, we quizzed Golden on her picks on everything from where to find awe-inspiring city views to the essential British pub.

Pan Pacific London’s chic accommodations.

What are London’s must-visit attractions?

The South Bank. Between Shad Thames and the Houses of Parliament, you walk past one of the largest concentrations of cultural institutions in the world, from 1,000-plus-year-old Borough Market, Shakespeare’s Globe and London Dungeons to the London Eye, Sea Life London Aquarium and Royal Festival Hall .

I also love Brick Lane for a curry and a vintage bargain, and [virtual concert series] ABBA Voyage is an incredible experience.

What are the best under-the-radar activities in London?

The City of London — also known as the Square Mile — conjures up business and tall modern buildings for many people, however, there are so many historical influences and stories to uncover, not just the “tourist” elements, such as the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

The city has its own government, mayor and police force, William Shakespeare lived in the city for a time and a Roman amphitheater was uncovered at the Guildhall in 1988 — it’s not just about financial institutions but more about the historical buildings that are still in use. Taking a guided walk opens your eyes to times gone by.

What are your favorite London museums?

The London Museum is amazing, also the Science Museum and the beautiful V&A .

What’s an unusual activity that visitors may not know about?

London isn’t all about what happens above ground — there are fascinating secret underground tunnels, disused stations, abandoned platforms and wartime shelters to be discovered, as well as traveling on the secret tube that used to ferry posts beneath the streets of London.

The Devonshire is a classic London pub.

What culinary experiences do you recommend in London?

Every city has great restaurants, however, if you want a taste of London, head to Bermondsey for some street food in Maltby Street Market , or try the fresh seafood from Electric Avenue, Brixton. You can’t go wrong with a trip to The Devonshire in Soho for great food in an authentic old pub atmosphere — quintessential London.

What’s one dish everyone should try in London?

Sausage roll.

What’s your favorite London pub and what should we order?

The Holly Bush in Hampstead Village, and you should order the Sunday roast — the lamb is delicious, and it has authentic Yorkshire puddings.

Where do you go to relax in London?

Anywhere in North London — Muswell Hill, Hampstead, Highgate, so many lovely neighborhood pubs and restaurants and so dog-friendly.

What’s the best way to experience London’s rich culture?

Just walk around. It’s one of the best cities for walking and seeing things you may not have noticed before. There are some really fun walking tours, ghost walks, history tours, etcetera. Or wander along the river — so much of London is free.

The City of London itself is very cool, steeped in history and home to some of the world’s top cocktail bars hidden down side streets. Spitalfields Market , Shoreditch and Hoxton are all great areas to experience London’s diverse culture.

Where’s the best place to enjoy London’s art scene?

On the streets. Street art is phenomenal in London, like Brick Lane and Waterloo tunnels, to name but a few.

Where can you find the hottest nightlife in London?

Wherever there’s a queue outside a club!

London is filled with cultural attractions and famous landmarks.

What adventures would you recommend in London?

I love a boat ride along the Thames in either direction — to Kew Gardens and Hampton Court , or to Canary Wharf and the Thames Barrier. It’s great to be able to hop on and off to explore and see the city from the river perspective.

And there’s always London’s fantastic tube and bus network to navigate the city and create your own adventures.

What are the best souvenirs to bring home from London?

Something that will always bring a smile and a memory. There’s an array of art, fashion and design that sums up London style.

Where’s the best place to go shopping in London?

There is such a broad choice for shopping — from thrifting for vintage and pre-loved in Shoreditch to designer labels and boutiques in Bond Street. There is something for everyone, some of the well-established markets are also a great place to bag a unique find.

What are the hottest neighborhoods in London?

Close to Pan Pacific London are the very popular Hoxton and Shoreditch neighborhoods, which offer a great introduction to East London.

Where can you find the best views in the city?

There are various viewing platforms, including the Shard and the recently opened Horizon 22 at 22 Bishopsgate, which offer spectacular views. For the walkers, there are rewarding views from Primrose Hill and Parliament Hill.

What are London’s best green spaces?

According to the United Nations, London has over eight million trees, making it the world’s largest urban forest.

Every park and green space offers a different perspective and history. As a North Londoner, my favorite is Hampstead Heath. Just four miles out of central London, its 800 acres of wild park and woodland boasts some of the most spectacular views of the city. There are swimming ponds, walking trails and Kenwood House, which has been featured in many period dramas. Londoners come to walk their dogs, picnic or fly a kite with their children. Famously, it’s the place that inspired C.S. Lewis to write The Chronicles of Narnia .

Horizon 22 offers some of the city’s most incredible views.

Share an insider tip about your city.

Climb 257 steps within the great dome of St Paul’s Cathedral and you will find yourself in The Whispering Gallery. This sits 98 feet above the nave of the church and is a circular walkway that hugs the base of the dome structure. If you whisper anywhere along the curved wall, someone standing on the other side of the room will be able to hear you because of a quirk with the acoustics.

What’s your go-to room service order?

Chicken noodle soup — ultimate soul food.

What’s your favorite hotel amenity?

It’s our Singa lion cub [mascot] for our younger visitors. We have a wonderful seamstress who makes new outfits for all occasions, so there’s always the opportunity to update Singa’s wardrobe on return visits.

When you’re traveling, what are a few essentials that are always in your luggage?

Definitely my hair straighteners.

What’s an overrated hospitality fad?

The club sandwich. It’s so hard to eat. Champagne as an amenity is overdone and not to everyone’s taste. Hospitality excellence is personalizing the guest’s experience, so amenities tailored to the individual show more care and creativity in my humble opinion.
