Dubai with Kids: 20 Fun Things to Do for the Whole Family

Planning to visit Dubai with kids and wondering how to make this family city trip fun for everyone?

We were in the same situation when we visited Dubai for the first time. Despite traveling with young children, we didn’t want to spend our entire vacation at the beach or visiting theme parks. And, of course, we couldn’t drag the kids sightseeing around the city for days in a row…. But we wanted to see Dubai’s main landmarks, while at the same time keeping it relaxing and fun for kids and adults alike.

Dubai is very touristic, and at first, seems a bit artificial and superficial. And in many ways it is. You will not find much of the truly authentic Middle Eastern culture unless especially tailored for tourists. No remarkable nature or other natural wonders either…

But Dubai has plenty of other things to offer for every type of traveler! It’s a fascinating place where everything is big, bigger, the biggest, modern, spectacular (see our guide ‘ Interesting facts about Duba i’ for more information)… And because it’s so diverse and has so much to offer, Dubai is actually one of the most family-friendly travel destinations in the world .

In this article, we share our tips for family-friendly things to do in Dubai with kids. Activities that we enjoyed the most.

We focus on those activities that not only give you a taste of Dubai, but are also fun for the whole family. Of course, you can take the kids to a playground, watch a movie, or visit a zoo – but unless you live in Dubai, I would skip these. Instead, go and explore this dazzling city and the surroundings! Find out!

Good to know: At the end of this article, we also include some suggestions on where to stay in Dubai with kids . You can see where we stayed, why we think it’s a great location for a family vacation in Dubai, and see the map where you can compare hotels and Airbnbs in that area. Read on!

Dubai is a perfect-weather destination and you can spend time at the beach or by the pool, do some water sports, and never leave your hotel. But if you’re reading this, you’re probably looking for more. So here are a few ideas on how to keep your kids busy on vacation in Dubai and do some sightseeing at the same time.

These are all family-friendly activities, based on our family trip to Dubai with our three boys of 5, 5, and 7.

Here are some fun things to do in Dubai with kids:

1. Go Sandboarding in the Desert

For our kids, sandboarding in the desert was an absolute favorite thing we did in Dubai!

Take a snowboard and slide down the dunes. Go back up the hill and slide back down again. And again… We only tried sandboarding a few times, as part of our desert safari tour , but the kids can’t stop talking about how fun it was.

Good to know: Pretty much all the desert tours in Dubai include sandboarding and they usually give big discounts for kids.

Dubai with kids - sandboarding in the desert

2. Visit a Water Park

Dubai has three big waterparks – Wild Wadi Waterpark , Aquaventure Atlantis , and LEGOLAND® Water Park Dubai . And there is also Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi, just a short ride from Dubai.

No matter how long your Dubai family trip is, a visit to one of the waterparks is an absolute must!

We didn’t get a chance to try them all, but we spent a day at Aquaventure Atlantis and the kids absolutely loved it. Our kids were a bit too young for most rides, but with bigger kids, you could easily spend several days here (or visit several water parks on the same trip).

Good to know: Kids under 1,2m are not allowed on the ‘big’ rides. They can join you on a ‘Lazy River’ or spend time at the kids’ slides, and they will enjoy it just as much. But we found it a pity that our 5-year-olds couldn’t join us on all the rides, and we had to constantly split up and do the rides separately.

TIP: Dubai waterparks are really expensive and you will pay even more if you buy your tickets at the entrance. So be sure to book your tickets online in advance!

3. Go to the Top of the World’s Tallest Building – Burj Khalifa

Visiting the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa is a must in Dubai! It’s such a unique thing to do and something the whole family will enjoy. Our kids were so impressed with this experience that even a few years later as I’m updating this article, they are still talking about it.

With a height of 829.8 m (2,722 ft – just over half a mile), Burj Khalifa is huge. It’s difficult to comprehend how tall this tower is until you stand under it. Your neck will hurt trying to see the top of the building from beneath it!

We visited Burj Khalifa in the evening and the views of the city in the dark were amazing. If you can get sunset tickets, it’s one of the best times to visit. You can see the city while it’s still light, at sunset, and – if you hang around long enough – also in the dark.

It’s not a cheap experience, but if there’s one thing that is absolutely worth its money in Dubai, it’s this. After all, how often will you get the chance to visit a building this high?!

TIP: Be sure to book your tickets in advance to avoid long waiting times and disappointment. If you didn’t prebook, try going in the morning when it’s less busy and you might get in without advance reservation.

Burj Khalifa Dubai

4. See Dubai’s Dancing Fountains

The Dubai Fountain is another experience that you should really try to do when visiting Dubai with kids. The whole family will enjoy the music and light show of these dancing fountains at the foot of Burj Khalifa. It’s breathtaking!

There are a couple of shows in the afternoon and every half hour starting at 6 pm in the evening. The fountains are probably more impressive at night than they are during the day.

We found the fountains spectacular when seen from the top of Burj Khalifa as well. So if you are At The Top in the evening, make sure you don’t miss the spectacle from above.

TIP: There are also traditional boats that go on Burj Lake during the fountain show . We didn’t book in advance and couldn’t do this, but it looked absolutely amazing. Especially for the children!

5. Ride a Camel

If you visit a place surrounded by the desert, you should certainly go on a camel trek! It’s one of those special experiences that you can only have in a few places in the world and it’s totally worth it.

Camel rides are also fun for the whole family, just maybe don’t embark on a very long ride with very young children. On the other hand, kids from about 3-4 years, should be able to do a tour like this , where camel riding is just one of the many things you do.

Our kids were so excited to ride the camel for the first time! Older kids might also love quad rides, but for our 5- and 7-year-olds, riding a camel was adventurous enough.

TIP: If you are visiting Dubai with teens or tweens, take a look at this popular desert tour that allows kids from 10 years old. It includes a camel ride, sandboarding, and a quad bike ride. All the fun activities in one tour!

6. Visit LEGOLAND Dubai

If you are visiting Dubai with kids under 12, then you may want to check out LEGOLAND Dubai theme park as well. It has the same concept as all the other LEGOLAND parks in the world, with colorful shows and fun rides mostly tailored for the youngest members of the family.

In addition to the traditional theme park, there’s also a water park that you can visit here as well – LEGOLAND Dubai Water Park . This is a really fun water park with various pools, waterslides, and also family-friendly activities with huge soft LEGO bricks. However – just as with all the other water parks in Dubai – you will enjoy it more with somewhat older kids (ideally over 1.2 m tall).

Here you can find more information and get your tickets for the theme park , and here – for the waterpark .

TIP: If you are looking for even more theme parks to visit in Dubai with kids, you can also check out Motiongate Dubai , and potentially also Bollywood Parks Dubai .

7. Go on a 4×4 Desert Safari

Ok, this is one of those activities that might not be for the whole family, but it’s so typically Dubai that it’s well worth trying. And yes, you can do it with kids.

Dune bashing in a 4×4 is really not for the faint-hearted. But what an exhilarating experience!

Our boys were excited and really enjoyed the ride, but towards the end, it became too much for them (and for us). The ride is really rough and you might get a bit car sick. But you’ll feel such an adrenaline rush! I vaguely remember myself saying ‘Oh my God’ over and over again… It’s an experience you will not quickly forget!

TIP: We did this highly-rated and extremely popular 4×4 desert tour and it included a taste of many other desert activities as well. Perfect for families with kids who want to experience the Dubai desert without going on many different tours. Just beware of that motion sickness and maybe take a pill for that before you go.

8. Visit an Aquarium

There are two big aquariums in Dubai – The Lost Chambers Aquarium in Atlantis at the Palm, and the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo located inside the Dubai Mall.

The Lost Chambers Aquarium is located at Atlantis hotel and is often combined with a visit to the Aquaventure Water Park that’s also located at the same place. Whereas the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is located in a very busy shopping mall, close to Burj Khalifa.

You can see a part of the aquarium at the Dubai Mall without having to go inside and it’s absolutely impressive. If you choose to visit an aquarium, make sure to book your tickets in advance and go first thing in the morning as it gets very busy in the afternoon.

9. Visit Dubai Museum

Dubai Museum was an unexpected surprise for us. It’s a really interesting place that gives you a good insight into Dubai’s history. You’ll also earn more about the Middle East and how a barren desert became a bustling Metropole…

Furthermore, the museum is located in the old Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1787, the oldest building in Dubai. It’s rather small and compact and presented in such a way that kids will enjoy it too. It doesn’t take much time to visit (40-50 min) and there’s plenty to keep the kids interested.

We visited the Dubai Museum and Old Dubai as part of this popular tour . Alternatively, you can also get here by taxi or with a hop-on hop-off bus (take the Historical Route) and visit on your own.

10. Go Shopping at Dubai Spice Souk and Gold Souk

Dubai is so much more than modern skyscrapers! We were pleasantly surprised to discover Old Dubai and its traditional markets, souks.

The colors, tastes, and the hustle and bustle of a traditional market will impress any child. Don’t forget to smell the spices! The girls will love all the bling-bling of the Gold Souk.

You can buy pretty much anything here, just don’t forget to bring cash and haggle over the asking price.

11. Dress up Like a Local

Since you are at a market anyway, why not buy something typically Dubai, something local that you wouldn’t find at home!

Or do as our kids did, and try a traditional outfit, such as abaya or kandura . And yes, we had to buy these clothes as the kids absolutely loved them. With these outfits and sunglasses, they looked like rich Arabian sheiks during the school carnival…

12. Go for a Ride on a Water Bus, a Water Taxi, or a Metro

When we travel with kids, we try to take as many different means of transport as we possibly can. Often, that’s an experience in itself.

Dubai also has a big choice of all kinds of transportation available. From the most modern transportation options such as Dubai Skyrail to the more traditional ones, such as a wooden boat abra .

So when visiting Dubai with kids, hop on the water bus on Dubai Marina, take a traditional abra water taxi on Dubai Creek, or explore the city on a hop-on hop-off bus for a day. Kids will love it!

Also the Dubai metro is fun for kids! It’s different from most other metros as it actually runs above the ground, so you can see the city passing by. There are elevators at every station, so the metro is easily accessible with a stroller as well. It’s a fast way to get from one side of the city to the other and it’s fun for the children.

13. Take the Kids to a Toy Store

When it comes to shopping, only a few places in the world can match the variety and offer of the Dubai shopping malls.

We visited a couple of toy stores in Dubai and it was like nowhere else we’ve ever been. It felt as if we entered a fairy tale world with Santa and flying elves, Star Wars characters, helicopters and mini drones flying around, and kids racing on kick scooters… This is a true paradise for any child!

TIP: Try to agree on the spending budget (and the size of the toys) with your kids before you enter the store. Or – better – use an excuse of limited baggage space on the plane and promise to go for some really special ice cream afterwards. And in the meantime just look around and enjoy!

14. Watch a Traditional Tanoura Dance Performance

If you have never seen a live Tanoura dance performance , you simply must! Tanoura is an Egyptian folk dance usually performed in Egyptian Sufi festivals by men. It’s also a popular traditional dance in Dubai.

Tanoura dancers wear long colorful skirts and perform all kinds of tricks while whirling. The traditional belly dance performances by women are also nice to see in Dubai. But if I were to choose just one of these, with kids, I would definitely go for the Tanoura dance. The lights and the colors of the traditional skirts will impress adults and children alike.

You don’t have to book a dance performance separately – it’s often part of various Dubai day trips or excursions, like this dinner cruise or this Dhow dinner cruise on Dubai Marina that we took one night (kids under 6 are free of charge).

15. Explore Dubai Marina

Dubai Marina was one of our favorite parts of the city. It’s a very lively place, with lots of restaurants and cafés. There were also many street performances at the Marina when we visited Dubai during the Christmas – New Year period.

But what makes it special and fun with kids is the wide and safe waterside promenades. Dubai Marina has almost 7km of flat stroller-accessible walkways! It’s is ideal for all kinds of wheels too – scooters, bikes, hoverboards, etc. A paradise for kids! There are also playgrounds for the younger ones.

TIP: Dubai Marina is also a very nice place to explore by boat. There are lots of boat tours here (take a look at this private speedboat tour !), but there’s also an earlier mentioned water bus that has several stops along the Marina. It’s really cheap and – if I recall well – young kids travel free of charge. Perfect if a long walk becomes too long for the kids. We walked one way and took the boat back afterward.

16. Hit the Beach

Dubai has so many really nice beaches. And I can’t imagine any family trip to Dubai without at least a few days spent at the beach. Even non-beach people like us spent many hours playing in the sand and enjoying the sun.

Some hotels have access to the beach and/or their own private beaches. So if you are in Dubai for a family holiday, it’s best to look for a hotel on the beach. Our hotel had an excellent location for that (more about it in our DoubleTree by Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Beach Hotel review) and it was so easy and convenient with kids.

If you are staying at a hotel in the city and not by the beach, you’ll be glad to know that there are many really nice public beaches in Dubai. For example, Marina Beach near The Walk where we stayed looked like a perfect place to spend a couple of hours with your family. Not only can you enjoy all the beach has to offer, but there are also several playgrounds and plenty of space to run around for the kids.

17. Taste Local Food and Drinks

One of the things that surprised us in Dubai was the incredible choice of food and non-alcoholic drinks. Dubai has a very international food scene and you can find food from all over the world here. Often, with a subtle Middle Eastern touch – a great mix!

Don’t dine at your hotel every evening and go out for dinner! It would be a real shame to go to a boring hotel buffet every night when there is such a great variety of really good restaurants in Dubai. Furthermore, dining at the hotel costs much more.

Our kids loved the Arabic bread and fresh fruit smoothies that all the restaurants served. My husband couldn’t get enough of local lamb dishes, and I loved the oriental spices that made every dish even more special…

18. Get Turkish Ice Cream

We had some excellent ice cream in Dubai. There are specialized places that really perfectioned the art of ice cream making. But our kids’ favorite was Turkish ice cream at The Walk in Dubai.

It’s not just any ice cream at a cafe, but the Turkish ice cream from a real Turk on The Walk. Not only do you get some delicious ice cream (eventually), but it comes with a whole show that the kids will absolutely love.

I won’t say much more about it, but if you like a good laugh and delicious ice cream, then definitely look out for it if visiting The Walk!

19. Go Ice Skating or Skiing in Summer

If you want to experience winter in the desert, Dubai has that too! You can find an indoor ski area and an ice skating rink at the Mall of Emirates.

You don’t even need to bring any ski clothing or equipment – everything can be rented. We didn’t try this because, for us, Dubai was a sunny destination that we visited in order to escape winter. And we have plenty of time for winter activities at home in Europe.

But if you or your kids want to experience winter in the summer, then it might be something for you! Check out various ticket options here .

20. Meet Dolphins

One of the things that many of our friends who visited Dubai with children seemed to love the most was interacting with dolphins at Atlantis.

We skipped it for various reasons. But if your kids want to interact with dolphins and time and money are not an issue, then you may want to try it.

Atlantis at The Palm is the place to be for this and many other activities (waterpark, aquarium). And, like with everything else in Dubai, it’s much cheaper if booked in advance .

Where to Stay in Dubai with Kids

When visiting Dubai with your family, I highly recommend staying at or very close to the beach. A pool is also a must!

Our experience: We stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Beach Hotel in the area called Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) and it was perfect with kids! Our hotel was at the beach, had several pools, and very affordable family suites with great sea views. You can check rates and find more information for this hotel here .

What we also loved about staying here is that there is a nice waterfront promenade at JBR (aka The Walk ) and so many nice restaurants just nearby. It’s a great place to go for a walk in the evening! In addition, JBR is close to Dubai Marina and it’s also quite easy to reach this part of the city by metro as well. When we go back to Dubai, I wouldn’t even consider staying anywhere else.

If you are looking for a relaxing beach vacation in Dubai with kids and can fit the whole family in a room of 4 people, Atlantis The Palm is also a very good option to consider because hotel guests can use the waterpark for free . So if you are planning to spend lots of time by the pool and can find a reasonable rate for a family room here, it might be worth it.

TIP: Using the map below, you can compare hotels and short-term rental accommodations in the JBR area . Simply insert your travel dates and group size, and you’ll find what’s available for your family stay. You can also zoom in and out to see more accommodations nearby. Check it out!

So, this is our guide to some of the fun things to do in Dubai with kids. There are many family activities in Dubai (and many more opening every year)… But if you are visiting for the first time and want to experience different aspects of this fascinating city, then I think that this list offers a very good mix of things to see and do.

If you are looking for more ideas for things to do in Dubai, make sure to check our guide to the best free and cheap things to do in Dubai . There are also so many great tours – take a look via the link below!

This post was exactly what I was looking for, I have kids with same ages! For how many days were you there? I am planning our agenda and would like to understand all what you did against the days you were there?

Tuesday 18th of June 2024

Hi Gaby, this first trip to Dubai with the kids was for about 10 days. But we didn't go sightseeing each day, some days were beach-only. Some places - like waterparks - really require a full day each. Whereas others, like e.g. Burj Khalifa, Dubai Fountain, Dubai Mall, etc. are all together and can be done in about half a day. The desert tour, depends on the options you choose is usually about 4-6 hours in the late afternoon/evening. If you want to spend more time riding camels than just for a picture, I recommend this tour with kids. We did it just recently and it was great. PS We visited Dubai just a few months ago again and I have published more articles. There are also so many new attractions! I still have to update this guide, but in the meantime, be sure to check out these guides for more info: - Best Things to Do in Dubai - all the 'musts'. - Dubai Itinerary for up to one week - definitely check this one out as it will give you a better idea of who you can group various activities. - Dubai Travel Tips - this one is a practical guide with tons of helpful and recent information. - Tips for Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark - this is the best water park in Dubai, don't miss it! Have a great trip!

great review, some really useful points!

Glad to help, Liz. Enjoy Dubai!

Sunday 5th of November 2023

Hi Jurga, Thank you for the tips. Do you have any recommendation for the desert safari suitable for kids? We are also travelling with a 5 and a 7 year old girls. We checked the safari which covers a lot of things like camel ride, jeep tour, falcon show but it is pretty expensive.

Hi Moulshree, there are desert tours that - at this moment - offer prices starting at around 30 euros per person. You can add additional options like dinner or a private driver which makes it more expensive. But regular tours like this one are really good value and they include dune bashing, sandboarding, and camel rides. You can read the description for what exactly is included and see all the options when you choose the number of people and travel dates, and you can then book the option that suits your family best. We did a tour like that and our kids loved it. But that jeep ride (dune bashing) can be quite rough if you are prone to car sickness. Otherwise, you can also opt for a 'quieter' experience like this that includes a camel ride and a visit to a Beduin camp where you can take pictures with falcons, etc. It's quite a lot more expensive than the cheapest desert tours, but it includes a long camel ride (the others are usually just a few minutes) and BBQ dinner. So all in all, a very good value for what you get too. Hope this helps. Have a great trip!

Hi Jurga, just wanted to say thanks for all your articles about Dubai. You answered all my questions and gave a lot of ideas for places to see. We are visiting next week, so excited.

Monday 24th of April 2023

Glad to help, Miley. Have a great trip!

Friday 28th of January 2022

so informative, and very well written, you have helped us so much! we will be definitely doing most if not all the recommendations you have highlighted.

Saturday 29th of January 2022

Glad to hear that you found it useful, Vanessa. Planning what to see and do in Dubai can be really overwhelming, with all kinds of new attractions opening up all the time. So don't even try to 'see it all'. Just pick the few places that interest you the most and you'll have a much better holiday than if you would try to cover as much as possible. Have a great family vacation in Dubai!

How to Beat the Heat in Dubai?

The weather in Dubai is hot. Temperatures can reach over 40 degrees Celsius in the summer, making it an uncomfortable place to visit at this time of year. The main problem with heat is that it causes dehydration. It’s important to drink plenty of water when you’re in Dubai so that you stay hydrated and avoid heat exhaustion.

If you feel overheated, you can do a few things to keep cool. Try to stay indoors as much as possible, stay in air-conditioned environments, and wear lightweight and breathable clothing.

Avoid sunburn by using sunscreen and wearing clothing that covers your skin. Also, drink lots of water to keep your body well-hydrated.

A smaller issue with the heat is humidity. Humidity can make it feel even hotter than it is. When high humidity, the sweat from your body can’t evaporate quickly enough, which means that you absorb more of the heat from the environment than you normally would. To avoid this, try to stay out of the humidity whenever possible. Outdoors during the day and inside when it gets dark are good options for staying cool.

If you want to make a family trip, then Dubai is one of the best cities in the world. There are many places to visit in Dubai with family in the summer. Dubai is a city that has gone through a lot of changes. It was once a financial center and a small fishing village. It is a major global city with a strong tourism industry and many hotels. For many, Dubai is the first time they step foot in this part of the Arabian Peninsula. You can’t go wrong with a visit here, as you will discover a paradise of natural beauty, incredible culture, and friendly people.

Planning a summer holiday is not as straightforward as it used to be, but if you are itching to get away, there are a number of destinations around the world that are currently welcoming travellers from the UAE. Here are 10 summer holiday ideas, with options for travellers who are both vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Cyprus is only a four-hour flight away and Emirates operates five weekly services to the Mediterranean island, making it a great option for shorter, last-minute trips.

The country is perhaps best known for its food and beaches, but is also home to a wealth of archeological sites, charming villages and a mountainous region that will offer much-welcome respite should you wish to fully escape the summer heat. There are currently no movement restrictions on the island, meaning you can enjoy its many attractions freely.

The UAE is categorised as a “red” country by the Cypriot authorities, meaning travellers from the UAE must take one PCR test prior to travel and then a second on arrival at the airport in Cyprus, at a cost of €30 (Dh130). You must then self-isolate until your results come through, which generally takes about a day.

Fully vaccinated travellers from the UAE can travel to Cyprus without having to quarantine or self isolate. The island recognises all vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency, as well as Sputnik and Sinopharm. All travellers to Cyprus, vaccinated or otherwise, must complete an online Cyprus Flight Pass form within 48 hours of their departure from the UAE.

In spaces where a large number of people might congregate, such as wedding venues, theatres, cinemas, shopping malls and museums, you may be asked to show your Cyprus Flight Pass as part of random checks by authorised officers, so it’s worth keeping either a physical or digital copy on hand at all times. Checks will not take place in more open areas, such as parks, picnic sites, beaches, archaeological sites, theme parks, children’s play areas and outdoor restaurants.

Mdina in Malta. Courtesy David Alfons

At a mere 27 kilometres long, Malta is tiny. But it has been inhabited by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, French, British and, perhaps most visibly, the Knights of St John, resulting in a rich history that begs to be explored.

Made up of five islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino, plus two uninhabited islets in the Mediterranean Sea – the southern European country lies halfway between Gibraltar and Egypt’s Alexandria.

Its capital, Valletta, may be the smallest national capital in the European Union, but it’s also a Unesco World Heritage Site, and home to museums, 16th-century mansions, fortresses, narrow streets, boutique hotels, bars and restaurants, as well as the Upper Barrakka Gardens, a serene spot overlooking the Grand Harbour.

Malta has reopened to tourists with a traffic-light system in place and is currently on Abu Dhabi’s Green List. The UAE is dubbed amber by Maltese authorities, meaning that travellers can visit if they have a negative PCR test result taken no more than 72 hours before travel. All travellers also need to complete a public health passenger locator form before flying to Malta.

Zanzibar reopened its borders to tourists in May. Courtesy Camilla Frederiksen

A longstanding favourite with UAE travellers, Zanzibar has only grown in popularity since it reopened its borders to tourists in May.

Whether you want to spend your days exploring Stone Town's 19th-century Unesco-listed architecture, while away the hours on a semi-deserted beach, or get up close to nature at the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre or Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond, this archipelago has much to offer. August is Zanzibar’s driest month, with temperatures reaching about 26ºC, making it a cool escape from the UAE’s summer climes.

All travellers above the age of 5 are required to present a negative PCR test, taken within 72 hours of arrival in Zanzibar. They must also fill in a Traveller’s Surveillance Form before arriving and must hold valid insurance for the entirety of their stay.

If you’re looking for a bargain, The Residence Zanzibar is currently offering 45 per cent off room rates, plus a 25 per cent discount on food and beverages and 50 per cent off spa services. The property consists of 66 stand-alone villas, each with a private swimming pool, and is located 55 minutes from Stone Town.

Flydubai operates daily flights to Zanzibar. It's a five hour-and-30-minute trip, with fares from Dh2,005

A travel corridor between the UAE and Serbia means vaccinated travellers can fly between the two countries without having to quarantine, as long as they can show proof from a recognised authority that they have received their final shot of any Covid-19 vaccine.

Unvaccinated travellers can enter the country if they can show a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of arrival, or a certificate showing that they have recovered from Covid-19 within the past six months.

This landlocked country in the heart of the Balkans remains relatively under the radar, so is ideal for those looking to steer clear of the madding crowds this summer. Temperatures average at around 30ºC in August. Flydubai currently offers daily direct flights to Belgrade with a flying time just under five-and-a-half hours.

Nestled between the Danube and Sava rivers and dubbed the White City, Belgrade is cool but gritty, with an intriguing mix of Socialist-era blocks and art nouveau architecture. Skadarska offers a taste of bohemian Belgrade, with its cobbled streets and galleries, while Savamala has been transformed into the city’s creative hub.

Those looking for a more active holiday can head to the south-east corner of the city, where, in the Avala Mountain and National Park, hiking trails and stunning views abound. Alternatively, take a stroll around Kalemegdan Park, which is set within the walls of a Roman fortress.

Mykonos, the fun-loving island of Greece

When Greece announced it was reopening its borders to tourists on May 14, the country’s tourism minister tweeted: "Greece is offering what people need. Calm and care-free moments on the road towards normality.”

Greece’s sun-drenched beaches, multi-faceted islands and exceptional cuisine will offer all the calm, care-free moments you need this summer, while its myriad historic sites, signature blue-and-white buildings and thriving local fashion scene will also entice.

As a result, Greece will be a no-brainer for many UAE travellers this summer, so expect popular tourist hot spots to be be busy over the coming months. Many visitors will head straight to the country’s islands – from fun-loving Mykonos to low-key Paros or honeymooner-favourite Santorini. Less-visited islands such as Kefalonia, Andros or Antiparos might be a better option for those still keen to avoid crowds. For those opting to stay in Athens, the historic neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki await, or, for a quieter experience, you can head to the suburbs of Kifisia or Vouliagmeni.

UAE travellers arriving in Greece are required to present either a negative PCR test, taken no more than 72 hours before arrival, or a negative antigen certificate taken no more than 48 hours before arrival. The UAE and Greece have established a travel corridor, meaning fully vaccinated travellers, including those with the Sinopharm vaccine, do not have to present a PCR test, as long as their second jab was taken at least 14 days prior to arrival. Travellers will also not need to quarantine when returning to Abu Dhabi.

All visitors must fill in a Passenger Locator Form at least one day before travelling and may be subject to random testing at the airport.

Flight time from the UAE to Athens is just over five hours. Emirates offers flights from Dubai with fares from Dh2,595; Etihad offers flights from Abu Dhabi for Dh1,768; Aegean Airlines and Wizz Air also fly between the two capitals

Azerbaijan is welcoming tourists from a select number of countries, including the UAE. Visitors must either show proof that they have been fully vaccinated, or present a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival in the country. The country is on Abu Dhabi’s Green List, meaning travellers do not need to quarantine upon their return.

Known as the City of Winds, Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, is a true amalgamation of old and new and east and west. Its medieval, Unesco-listed old city, known locally as Icherisheher, sits adjacent to the imposing, ultra-modern Flame Towers and the distinctive Zaha Hadid-designed Heydar Aliyev Centre.

Home to twisting alleyways, artists' workshops, traditional markets and authentic restaurants, the old city is encircled by 12th-century walls, while the newer parts of the city offer a delightful blend of Gothic, baroque, neoclassical and art nouveau architecture, as well as grand boulevards lined with designer shops. The city is clean, orderly and extremely pedestrian friendly. With a flight time of less than three hours, this is the perfect spot for a last-minute city break or an impromptu shopping trip with friends.

Flydubai operates daily flights to Baku. It's about a three-hour trip, with fares from Dh1,350; Azerbaijan Airlines also operates direct flights between the two countries

If you’re looking for a summer holiday that involves staying put in a stunning resort, Mauritius is your best bet. The Indian Ocean island is reopening its borders on July 15, with a two-phased approach. In the initial phase, from July 15 to September 30, it will welcome vaccinated travellers to enjoy holidays within 14 “resort bubbles”.

Guests will have to stay within their resorts, unless they are remaining on the island for longer than 14 days. Those staying for more than two weeks will be able to go out and explore the island after taking a PCR test on day 14 of their holiday.

Even though they must be vaccinated, all visitors must also show a negative PCR test upon arrival in Mauritius, taken between five and seven days before they travel. They will then have to take additional tests on days seven and 14 of their resort holiday, as applicable.

The 14 approved resort bubbles offer something for everyone. Those looking for an intimate, secluded, romantic stay can head to the luxurious Constance Prince Maurice, which is part of The Leading Hotels of the World and designed in accordance with feng shui principles. For a more active affair, Long Beach Mauritius is located on the island’s famed Belle Mare beach and offers diving, kayaking, snorkelling, water skiing, windsurfing, a climbing wall, tennis courts, group fitness classes and a gym. For those looking for a more budget-friendly holiday, the three-star Tropical Attitude and two-star Cocotiers Hotel Mauritius are also on the approved list.

Emirates operates two flights per week to Mauritius. It's a six-and-a-half-hour trip, with prices starting from Dh4,375

The Maldives was one of the first destinations in the world to start welcoming back tourists. Dnata

If you haven’t been vaccinated but an Indian Ocean island retreat appeals, the Maldives is a firm favourite . It was one of the first destinations to reopen to tourists and has so far been very successful in keeping visitors safe.

The archipelago’s “one island, one resort” concept means that social distancing occurs by default, making this an ideal option for people still keen to avoid too much social interaction.

The destination offers countless resorts, at varying price points, but if you want to be a pioneer, head to the Kuda Villingili, which opened in June. It’s a quick speedboat ride from Male, so you don’t have to worry about catching a sea plane, offers one of the best surf spots in the world, as well as one of the longest swimming pools in the Maldives, and is decorated with eco-friendly fittings and furniture, including carpets made from recycled plastic bottles.

All visitors, including those that have been vaccinated, must present a negative PCR test upon arrival in Male, taken no more than 96 hours before their departure.

Etihad flies to Male daily, with fares from Dh3,585; Emirates operates daily flights, with fares from Dh3,695; flydubai flights to Male start from Dh3,370. Flying time is four hours and 10 minutes

Tourists can take short parasailing flights from the beach out toward the small island, Koh Pu, and back again. Thailand's largest, and arguably most famous island is open for business . Year-round sunshine, endless sandy beaches, the blue waters of the Andaman Sea and top-class Thai cuisine have long made Phuket a much-loved holiday destination.

Head to the southernmost tip of the island, Laem Chao, for breathtaking scenery and sunsets; stroll around old Phuket town to take in the traditional Sino-Portuguese architecture; wander through the Wat Chai Tharam temple; or decamp to one of the beaches on the northern coast, which are typically less crowded than those in the south.

On July 1, the southern Thai province removed all restrictions on fully vaccinated travellers. This applies to all vaccines, including Sinopharm. PCR tests are still compulsory before travelling, and need to be taken no more than 72 hours before departing for Phuket. Visitors will also need to complete subsequent PCR tests on days six and 12 of their holiday.

Travellers must also complete and submit a Certificate of Entry form before they travel. Finally, Covid-19 travel insurance with coverage for at least $100,000 is required, with policies offered by airlines not accepted.

Non-vaccinated travellers from non-red-zone countries, which includes the UAE, can also travel to Phuket, but must stay in a local quarantine hotel for 14 days upon arrival.

Etihad flies to Phuket three times a week, with fares from Dh1,795; Emirates operates four times a week, with fares from Dh1,995. Flying time is six hours and 30 minutes

African elephants (Loxodonta africana) at a waterhole - remote camera. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

If a safari has been a longstanding feature on your bucket list, now could be a good time to make that wish come true. UAE travellers, vaccinated or otherwise, are not required to quarantine upon arrival in Kenya. They do need to present a negative Covid-19 test, fill in a passenger locator form before flying and then submit daily health information via the online Jitenge platform. A national curfew is currently in place from 10pm to 4am.

Head to the Masai Mara for safari lodges where social distancing is a given and wildlife experiences are infinitely more enjoyable now that there are fewer crowds. At this time of year, the rolling savannahs are teeming with wildlife, from giraffes and zebras to elephants, lions and cheetahs. Time your trip well and you may even see one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife phenomena – the Great Migration.

If you have a particular penchant for elephants, head to Amboseli National Park in the south of the country, where you’ll get prime wildlife spotting experiences against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

If you want to combine your wildlife spotting with a bit of beach time, head to Mombasa or the Unesco-listed Lamu Town, where you can spend hours exploring evocative backstreets that are brimming with Portuguese, Swahili, Omani and Zanzibari influences.

Emirates flies to Nairobi, with fares from Dh1,785; Etihad fares start from Dh1,090. Flying time is five hours

Fiji is an excellent place to visit in August. Although this month falls within Fiji's cooler, drier season, daytime temperatures commonly sit in the low 80s, so you can spend the bulk of your vacation sunbathing on its white sand beaches and swimming in its vibrant blue water. Plus, several of the country's 333 islands – including Taveuni, the Mamanucas and the Yasawas – offer ample opportunities for water sports like surfing and scuba diving. The rich Fiji culture also features all kinds of unique traditions, such as kava and firewalking ceremonies.

When it comes to summer vacations, why settle for one lake when you can visit two? Interlaken – a scenic Swiss town whose name means between lakes – is set in an idyllic spot between the dazzling lakes Thun and Brienz and surrounded by mountains. August temperatures in the mid-70s will allow you to take in the area's natural beauty while hiking, boating or paragliding, though you'll want to pack some rain gear for occasional wet weather. While a case can be made for a quieter shoulder-season trip, Lake Como is in its prime at the height of summer. Visiting during the high season may mean more tourists and higher room rates, but you'll be able to take in the lakeside towns, villas and beaches at their most lustrous. Take a boat cruise across the lake to stroll through the blooming gardens of iconic villas like Villa Balbianello. Sample peak produce at open-air markets or freshly caught fish in the many dining venues with a view. Or simply see and be seen on one of the area's beaches or lakeside pools.

Popular hikes and vistas become busy this time of year, and you'll need to reserve a timed entry permit available on July 1, but you can easily find quieter options among the park's 355 miles of trails. The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has a lot to offer beyond its beaches, including a myth-laden history, but a visit during one of the hottest months of the year will make its sandy stretches look pretty enticing. Sun seekers can bask under cloudless skies, and when the temperatures get too warm (think: 90 degree averages), visitors can cool off by Jet Skiing, swimming and paddleboarding. Later, beach bums and water lovers alike will want to treat themselves to some fresh Cypriot cuisine paired with local wine (including some of the oldest named wine in the world).

Montengro's coastline on the Adriatic Sea and its inlets boasts scenic towns like Budva and Kotor, where you'll find charming old towns and blissful stretches of sand. To cool off and escape the crowds, retreat to the country's mountainous interior to hike in destinations like Durmitor National Park and Biogradska Gora National Park.

Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa's most frequented safari destinations , especially in August when wildlife viewing opportunities are superb. August is usually a great time to catch the Great Migration, an annual journey by more than 2 million wildebeest, zebras and other animals from Tanzania's Serengeti National Park into Masai Mara. What's more, the reserve is a year-round haven for additional animal species, including the big five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes), earning it a reputation as one of Africa's most diverse areas.

Summer is peak season in this Croatian town, so you'll likely rub elbows with other travelers during an August visit. However, Rovinj's beauty will more than make up for the influx of tourists. In August, you can comfortably walk along the car-free cobblestone streets of Rovinj's Old Town thanks to daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s. This month is also a great time to explore Grisia Street, which hosts an open-air art exhibition in August. If you need a break from the town's throngs of people, take a day trip to one of 14 nearby islands.

Plan an Outer Banks vacation in August to enjoy toasty beach weather (think: average highs in the mid-80s) and fun festivals like the Outer Banks Watermelon Festival and the Outer Banks Pirate Festival. These North Carolina barrier islands are ideal for all kinds of beach activities, including sailing, surfing and sunbathing. Plus, some of them are rich in history. Head to Kill Devil Hills to visit Wright Brothers National Memorial (where the famous pilots took their first flight), or venture to Roanoke Island to check out Roanoke Island Festival Park's exhibits about what life was like in the 16th century.

Trade your ski poles for a hiking stick and visit New Hampshire's White Mountains in summertime, when the area's gorges, bike trails and more than 100 waterfalls are at their most lush. Action-seekers can climb Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast, where they'll be rewarded with views of five states. Meanwhile, those looking for a more easygoing summer afternoon can go for a scenic drive or take in the views with a cocktail in hand on the terrace of Omni Mount Washington Resort . With August averages in the 60s and 70s, the weather will be ripe for any outdoor adventure.

Curacao is the perfect destination for those seeking a late summer Caribbean getaway thanks to its location outside the hurricane belt. Sustained daytime temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s mean you'll likely spend most of your vacation lounging on the beach or swimming past marine life, coral reefs and shipwrecks while scuba diving. But the charming, colorful Dutch colonial architecture found in the UNESCO-certified capital – Willemstad – is worth exploring, too. Plus, with fewer mega resorts and more boutique resorts and bed-and-breakfast establishments, Curacao has a more relaxed feel than other Caribbean destinations and is a great place to reset.

Burj Khalifa

You can now see Dubai from At The Top of Burj Khalifa for under Dhs100 – here’s how

Great views of the city for less

' src=

A new offer has hit new heights this summer and you don’t want to miss it.

Letting you reach some new heights, it’s now easier (and cheaper) than ever to see Dubai from more than 100 floors up the world’s tallest building.

Making sure Dubai residents are entertained this summer, the Burj Khalifa has released a new summer offer to get you looking down on the city for less.

Giving you the chance to admire the view from 124 floors up of the 163 floor building, the At The Top experience is now just Dhs99 for UAE residents.

Residents can now enjoy the experience for almost half the usual price of Dhs179.

Included in the price of your ticket is the trip up to the viewing platform on floor 125, where you can look down below at the city, snap a pic for your Instagram feed at the window and spend a while trying to spot where your home is.

Running from July 1 to August 15, the offer also allows children under 8-years-old to enter for free, so the day out can be a whole family affair.

However, you should note that the offer cannot be redeemed on a UAE public holiday, and that you need to bring your Emirates ID with you when you visit.

If you like reading this: UAE public holidays: When are all the long weekends in 2024?

For those who want to go even higher than floor 125, you can visit the Burj Khalifa Sky Lounge on floor 148 and enjoy some refreshments from Dhs399.

Encouraging residents to stick around for the next few weeks, At The Top are not the only attraction to release some cracking summer deals.

Last month, TopGolf announced they would be giving away a free hour-long game to players if they purchase one.

Over on Palm Jumeirah, the Dubai Balloon has also been offering 25 per cent off for the summer, with kids under 11 floating up for free.

Dubai Summer Surprises 2024: Flash sales, kids-go-free offers and dining deals to know

S oaring temperatures and summer holidays notwithstanding, Dubai Summer Surprises continues to endure. Now in its 27th year, the shopping and entertainment festival begins on Friday.

On the cards is a jam-packed calendar of concerts and family-friendly events, big-ticket raffle draws, shopping bargains, restaurant deals and hotel offers that will run until September 1.

It's a challenge to keep track of everything that's part of the 65-day emirate-wide affair. Here are some highlights.

12-hour flash sale on Friday

Big savings are among the headline promise of DSS at large – and this will be demonstrated early on with a 12-hour flash sale at City Center Al Shindagha, City Centre Deira, City Centre Me’aisem, City Centre Mirdif and Mall of the Emirates.

From 10am to 10pm on the festival's first Friday, more than 100 brands, from fashion and beauty to homeware and electronics, are offering up to 90 per cent off on selected items. Participating brands include Carters, Aldo, Steve Madden, Okaidi, The Watch House, E City, Better Life, Cole Haan, Damas, Crate & Barrel, Al Jaber Optical, Ecco, Balmain, Lego, Vinci and US Polo Association.

Opening weekend concerts and performances

While DSS lasts for more than two months, it is making a splash this weekend for opening celebrations.

Norwegian dance group Quick Style, Jordanian indie band Autostrad, Jordanian-Palestinian singer Dana Salah and Iraqi–Canadian singer Ali Gatie are performing at City Centre Mirdif. At Mall of the Emirates, several DJ zones will be set up featuring DJs Keza, Tala Samman and Sonya, alongside dance performances by Hallway Boyz, Moto Dancers, and a bharatnatyam and hip-hop Fusion. Roaming dancers and entertainers are also taking over Dubai Festival City Mall.

On Friday, Georges Wassouf and Al Shami are taking to the stage at Coca-Cola Arena, followed by rap sensations Xzibit, D12 and Obie Trice on Saturday. A performance by one of Ethiopia's biggest pop stars, Teddy Afro, is taking place on Sunday.

Attractions, hotels and restaurant offers

For the first time, DSS has partnered with discount publisher the Entertainer with a summer-specific package. The mobile application is known for its buy-one, get-one vouchers on a selection of dining venues, attractions, fitness locations and other destination experiences.

Buying a regular subscription costs Dh595 for a year, but with the DSS collaboration, tourists and residents can get the Entertainer package for Dh195 for three months and access more than 7,000 offers.

Even without the Entertainer package, visitors can enjoy individual deals from establishments. Attractions such as Madame Tussauds , The View at The Palm, Burj Khalifa At the Top and Aya Universe are offering kids-go-free deals, as are select hotels across the city, including the St Regis The Palm, the H Dubai, Kempinski Mall of the Emirates, Marriott Hotel Al Jaddaf.

Foodies can also look forward to the return of Summer Restaurant Week from August 23 to September 1, where 50 restaurants will dish out pocket-friendly set menus for lunch and dinner. The list will be revealed nearer to the time, but it includes renowned hotspots as well as hidden gems.

A new gastronomy-focused event is also launching this year, called Sizzling Summer Eats, where 100 restaurants will offer up to 30 per cent dining discounts for 30 days from July 15.

Big-ticket raffle draws

Shoppers can also watch out for raffle campaigns scattered across various malls. For example, a new GAC GS8 2024 will be given to six winners upon spending Dh200 from June 28 to September 1 at 18 participating malls under the Dubai Shopping Malls Group, which includes Al Ghurair Centre, Al Barsha Mall and Al Bustan Centre.

Shoppers who spend Dh300 or more at Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Deira, and City Centre Mirdif from June 28 to September 1 can enter a draw for a Maserati Grecale GT. Meanwhile Mini Coopers are on the cards for the eight winners of raffle coupons being distributed at Enoc stations and select malls, with every 10,000 tickets sold resulting in a draw.

Modesh World

The indoor amusement park is extra-celebratory this year as it marks its 25th anniversary. Visitors, particularly children, can access 170 rides and attractions at the Dubai World Trade Centre venue, which also features more than 100 arcade games, virtual reality experiences and soft-play areas for little ones.

The venue is launching an inflatable park and animal world play area, while Modesh Cafe will serve bites and beverages.
