This Rally-Ready 996 Porsche 911 Is a Safari Build Done Right

It’s fair to say the 996 Porsche 911 is having a bit of a moment right now. From official Porsche Classic one-offs to Instagram accounts reclaiming the fried-egg moniker, people are coming around to Porsche’s late-’90s and early aughts 911 due to its blend of relative affordability , an analog driving experience, and modern creature comforts. Now, companies are building turn-key Safari kits for 996s, boosting ride height and capability while retaining the 911’s signature rear weight bias and sports-car dynamics.

Kalmar Automotive recently introduced the 996-based RS-6 as the first water-cooled model in its “Adventure Range.” The Denmark-based company is no stranger to off-road Porsche conversions, having built 964- and 993-based cars in the past. According to its website, Kalmar can also outfit your first-generation Cayman or second-gen Cayenne for rally duty.

Starting with a customer-supplied 996 in rear- or all-wheel drive, Kalmar increases ground clearance by over three inches to a total of 8.25, equaling that of a Cayenne and outdoing Porsche’s own 911 Dakar by three-quarters of an inch even in its full-height mode. Adaptive, electronically-controlled shock absorbers are also available, as is a hydraulic lift that raises ground clearance by nearly another two inches.

But this isn’t just a lift kit. Kalmar also fits a custom limited-slip differential and upgraded driveshafts for putting the power to the wheels and a stiffer strut brace to better manage lateral and vertical loads, along with special top mounts and bushings designed to cope with the stresses of off-roading. Lightweight, narrow wheels are paired with taller all-terrain or spiked winter tires, and Kalmar claims “complete underbody protection” with additional shielding for critical front-mounted cooling systems. Customers interested in off-the-grid travel can also opt for a rear-mounted rack with fuel cans and a spare tire.

Inside, Kalmar adds a rear roll cage and Recaro buckets for safety, but otherwise focuses on weight reduction with the removal of “all sound deadening materials, audio and other comfort items.” Guess you’ll be listening to gravel pelting the wheel wells and the flat-six engine—I’ve heard worse.

The company claims it chose the 996 platform because of access to “plentiful and more affordable donor cars,” which is another way of saying air-cooled prices are too damn high . In addition to providing their car, buyers will fork over at least €45,000 ($49,000) and expect to wait around six months while their car is built. That’s not cheap, but it’s a far cry from the 911 Dakar’s $223,650 base price tag before dealer markups.

Now, Kalmar isn’t the first outfit to Safari a 996—that’s the SafariProjek guys out of South Africa. The ambitious Captain Crankshaft duo also built their own on a budget this summer and documented the adventure on YouTube, which is worth a watch. But there’s something about this early narrowbody car with the runny-yolk lights in a rally livery that just works. It almost looks like it was meant to be.

I won’t be cutting up my own early 996 anytime soon, mostly because I’m indecisive and don’t have $50,000 to spare. But I like the idea of the platform being used as an accessible entry point for all kinds of wild builds. Let’s keep it weird, 996 fans.

2023 Porsche 911 Safari looks production-ready in new spy photos

The high-riding 911 has been a long time coming.

A prototype Porsche 911 Safari looking mighty close to production-ready has been spied undergoing winter testing. Porsche's high-riding, thick-sidewalled, all-wheel-drive 911 prototype has been testing for what feels like an eternity at this point, but judging from what we see here, that wait is just about over. 

Strictly speaking, not much has changed since we first shared photos of a lifted 911 testing more than a year ago. The latest prototype retains the earlier tester's bumper-exit exhaust (not the quad-tip, under-bumper setup of the 911 Vision Safari Concept Porsche showed last year) and the vaguely whale-tail-like rear spoiler, so the fundamentals were clearly in place long before the sheetmetal was finalized.

Other departures from the Safari concept include fully molded fenders (rather than bolt-on flares) and a set of mesh wheels instead of the Fuchs style. The concept's fender-top vents are also absent. If you ask us, the real deal also looks like it has a bit more vertical "heft" to it, likely due to sheetmetal designed for the real world, where aerodynamic performance and drag are inescapable considerations in the design process. 

Porsche has been threatening to deliver a lifted 911 based on the Carrera 4 (the basic all-wheel-drive variant, for the uninitiated) for about a decade now . Indeed, when the Vision Safari was shown, Porsche acknowledged that it has been testing such variants in 2012 on the same gravel roads it uses develop the Cayenne and Macan SUVs. Given the apparent completeness of this particular example, we expect to hear something more concrete about Porsche's plans before the year is out. Stay tuned.

You Need to Buy This Super Clean Safari Porsche 911

For a few years now, the rally-inspired, “Safari” style 911 has become the hot trend in the modified Porsche world, thanks much in part to the excellent work of Porsche nut Leh Keen. But before Keen started his off-road Porsche projects in 2013, there was this very 911 you see here built by GSR Autosport. Based on a 1984 911, the car was built in 2012 as part of eBay’s Built on eBay challenge for SEMA, which tasked four with builders creating a unique car for under $50,000 by buying a car and parts on the online auction platform.

The car was sold at auction to its current owner, apparently for just $33,700 (which is insane.) Since then, he’s put just about 1,000 miles on and even had more work done to it, including a total engine rebuild. But all of the rally-ready parts are still there: a roll cage, a stripped-down interior, Recaro seats , Bilstein shocks, a raised suspension, Enkei rally wheels, gravel tires and the essential pod of rally lights. In short, it looks like it’d be fun as hell to fling down a gravel road or take off sweet jumps. Now imagine that. That could be you.

Better yet, this could be you after spending not a ton of money, at least as far as air-cooled 911s, especially Safari style 911s, are concerned. A Keen Porsche will set you back somewhere in the area of $100,000 , and while there’s a lot of work that goes into the car to justify that price, it’s still, well, a lot . As of writing, this 911 sits at $20,000 with a few days left so it’s hard to project exactly where it ends up, but there’s a good chance it won’t hit six figures.

The new Porsche 911 Dakar has been in the headlines a lot in recent months but its exorbitant $223,450 price tag puts it out of reach for most. This particular safari-style 1997 911 Carrera Coupe is a little more affordable and approachable.

This heavily modified 911 Carrera has been listed up for auction through Bring a Trailer and while it probably isn’t as capable off-road as the new 911 Dakar, it certainly looks the part and would be much more suited to gravel roads and sand dunes than a standard 911 of this era. It is being offered with manufacturer’s literature, a Carfax report, and a clean California title.

While the exterior is adorned in Olive Green, this is actually a wrap, and hidden beneath is Ocean Blue Metallic paint. The front end also stands out with a new bumper with an integrated skid plate finished in black while the car sits on black 16-inch Braid wheels wrapped in 215/70 Yokohama Geolander A/T tires. The seller also had the 911’s suspension modified by BBI Autosport to include custom-built JRZ long-travel adjustable coilovers as well as new control arms, links, and moonball bearings.

As for the 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six engine, it remains largely stock but does have a new VarioRam intake system. It is coupled to a six-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels. New brake rotors and pads have also been fitted.

A handful of welcome changes have also been made to the car’s interior. For example, there are new Recaro Pole Position seats clad in black leather with houndstooth inserts and an embossed Porsche crest in the headrests. A harness bar also catches the eye and has allowed for the fitment of Sparco six-point harnesses. The Porsche also has a hydraulic handbrake, a wood shift knob, air conditioning, and power windows.

The listing doesn’t note how many miles the car has traveled since its Safari overhaul but notes the chassis and engine have 124,000 miles (199,000 km) under their belt.

It is well known that car designers are often influenced by custom car builders. Want proof? Quad headlights, oversized wheels, and clear hoods all appeared at local car shows before car designers took them to the next level. Case in point, Porsche is in the market to sell performance cars, but it sure sells a load of SUVs and crossovers . The geniuses in Stuttgart also are well aware that they need to stay on-trend and have been spotted playing around with a 992-based Porsche 911 Carrera chassis off-roader.

But surely, the factory 911 Safari is going to run deep into six-figure territory so the fan-built Rothmans tribute car you see here might tick all the boxes. This 1986 Porsche 944 might not have all the stares at the country club but it commands attention wherever it goes and we'd much rather thrash in this Porsche versus a pricey 911 Safari.

At the core of this project is a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo with the five-speed box. Porsche decided to focus on front-engine rear-wheel-drive cars in the 1980s to boost profits while its skunkworks team was off developing legends like the 959. The 1980s were of course, a big deal for Porsche's racing and rally efforts, especially the Rothmans-branded cars like the 1986 Paris-Dakar 959. We all dreamed of that car.

The Porsche 944 Safari here says true to the Rothmans appearance with tribute graphics. The base car was a 159,000-mile donor with the hot-for-the-80s burgundy interior and the builder ran with it. The seats are burgundy Corbeau racing buckets and red Sabelt harnesses go along with a similar shade. In the back is a non-rally certified roll bar to keep you out of trouble if the shiny side is down.

The running gear is a nice blend of old and new with white Porsche factory wheels and more modern off-road tires in the form of BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A. The BFG Baja tires are sized in 215/75R15 all around to navigate off-road and help get over obstacles. The suspension has a lift for 11 inches of ground clearance and the Bilstein shocks and springs have been added to accommodate long-throw travel and softness to absorb the abuse.

The exterior is pretty simple, monster roof rack, full size spare and massive Hella fogs to take you back to the rally glory days. While these lights turn night into day, the sounds and smells this car produces must be glorious. This gem is going up for auction in the near future through Collecting Cars, so if you are about that safari life, this could be for you. The sale price should be reasonable meaning you can try out owning a safari Porsche without the cost of the factory 911 Safari, or 911 Dakar as it might be called .

When Porsche released the 911 to replace the 356 in 1964, not even the most optimistic fans at Stuttgart or around the world could have predicted that the famous model would still be in production over five decades later. Over many generations and many technological advancements later, the 911's iconic profile and rear-engined layout make it a stalwart and effective sports car to this day .

A brand-new 992-generation 911 might sound like a great way to spend a couple hundred thousand dollars, but so does a meticulously maintained, early air-cooled 911 with its smaller size and stylish design. The fact that values across the 911's history remain impressive is a testament to Porsche's engineering prowess, proving that manufacturers can keep a model relevant by sticking to the original recipe while adding improvements along the way.

But in modern times, the Porsche 911 has acquired another niche culture: the trend of taking a 911 and lifting it, bolting on mud flaps and rally lights, and calling it a Safari 911.

Exploring where the Safari 911 phenomenon began is really taking a walk through the model's entire history.

Going Back In Time

The 911 emerged onto the market in the early-1960s (it was originally called the 901 but that name had to be ditched to keep Peugeot happy) as a more powerful sports car than the outgoing 356, with a new design that took Porsche a step forward into the future. With a pair of cylinders added onto the 356's flat-four (which was very similar to a car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the Volkswagen Beetle), the 911 entered the market with a low center of gravity and curb weight thanks to its air-cooled flat-six.

The early 911 was yet another car that proved how much more fun driving a lightweight car is than a powerful car and it actually proved itself popular among privateer rally racers of the period, competing against the likes of the Alpine A110, with its similar engine layout. While Porsche was experiencing success on the racetrack with mid-engined cars like the 904, 906, and 917, the 911 steadily advanced in power and performance on the private market.

By 1984, Porsche had taken the 911 into the G-Body era and decided to modify an impact-bumper 911 into a car that could compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally. With an all-wheel-drive system to help counteract the pendulous rear end, the 953 was born—and then quickly replaced by the 959, which added water-cooled heads, a more advanced suspension system, and a pair of turbochargers. The 959 established a new era for Porsche , though it never competed in Group B before the class was terminated due to safety concerns. But Porsche took the learnings it had acquired building a rally car that ended up being the world's fastest production road-going car, as well, and dropped all the knowledge right back into the 911.

Taking On Rally Racing

For the late-1980s, Porsche introduced the Carrera 4 with all-wheel drive to the 964 generation's lineup—before the rear-wheel-drive version. For the 993 gen, the range-topping Turbo and Turbo S variants had received all-wheel-drive to help average drivers tame their massive torque in the hopes of coaxing down the old "Widow Maker" moniker of the 930 Turbo.

By the late-1990s, Porsche was hard at work transforming the 911's entire architecture—it was a move that proved highly divisive among Porsche purists, many of whom lamented the departure away from air-cooled engines towards water-cooling . And don't even get Porsche fans started on the 996 generation's headlights, IMS bearing issues, and all the shared interior design details with the Boxster.

But the 996 was nonetheless a faster, lighter car than the outgoing 993, with a lower center of gravity and lower production costs. The 996 gen also included a Carrera 4, a Carrera 4S, and the Turbo with all-wheel drive.

Looking back at Porsche's variegated history in both motorsport and over the 911's production advancements, the current trend of building Safari 911s starts to make a bit more sense. After all, the 911's entire rear-engine layout might seem like it's a group of nonsensical blowhards clinging to tradition more than actual performance but in reality, the 911's rear-engined layout makes it fun to blast around corners when there's a bit less traction.

Modern Rally Machines

A few Safari 911 builders, like Leh Keen in America and Tuthill Porsche in the UK, actually do build up vintage cars that can be enjoyed off-road today . But the other side of the Safari 911 story comes down, as most things do, to money. As Porsche 911 values have risen stratospherically, fans of the brand might brag that 75% of all Porsches ever built are still on the road—but that means there are a ton of Porsches on the road! And any Cars and Coffee event worth its salt will no doubt be chock-full of both vintage Porsches and modern GT3 RS variants.

So anyone who wants to stand out in the Porsche community—and who has the money and time to invest in such a project—can do much worse than building or paying someone else to build a rally-inspired 911. Just watch Matt Farah pilot his Safari 911 around the mean streets of Los Angeles for a look at how these cars are meant to be used.

Of course, most sports car owners never push their cars even close to the limit and Porsche owners are no different. Still, the thought of a classic 911 being pushed right to the edge of lift-off throttle oversteer on a gnarly rally stage is clearly enough of a dream to inspire these builders to keep on building.

Porsche 911 safari.

One of only three copies built by Eric Brandenburg, who piloted his own in the 2007 Transsyberia Rally, this Porsche 911 Safari is a true rarity. It started life as a 1978 SC but has since been transformed into a capable off-road machine. Modifications include a beefed up suspension with Bilstein B6 Sport dampers, mudder tires mounted on 16-inch rims, stainless steel skid plates to protect the undercarriage, and a winch hidden in the custom front bumper. A classic Porsche 911 you can drive through a foot of mud could be yours

Would you drive a Porsche 911 through the desert? Probably not, unless you could blast through the dunes in a 911 Safari, a purpose-built rally car with big, knobby tires and over a foot of ground clearance. Lucky for you, a 1978 example that’s dying to hit the trail just went up for sale.

The Safari started life as a standard 911 SC sitting just a few inches off the ground on low-profile tires. It’s now riding on light truck tires, which is the kind of rubber you’re more likely to find on a Chevrolet Silverado than on a classic German sports car. It has received a long list of off-road-focused modifications including a limited-slip differential and an upgraded gearbox with shorter gear ratios, which helps with traction and power delivery. The transformation also added a thick skid plate that prevents rocks from finding a new home in the 3.2-liter flat-six engine.

“This car drives through anything. Rocks, sand dunes, river beds, it will even go over ditches! You can pretty much go wherever you want to go,” said Bert Houtmann, the Porsche’s owner, in an interview with enthusiast magazine 911 & Porsche World .

The car has already proven itself. About a decade ago it participated in the Transsyberia Rally , a grueling 14-day event that took participants all the way from Moscow, Russia, to Ulan Bator, Mongolia. The 911 didn’t win the event, but it survived. The risks of getting stuck in a ditch in the Ural Mountains, or getting caught in the current while crossing a river in Mongolia, are very real.

The Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring Package is priced at a whopping Rs 2.75 crore.

The luxury car is the petrol variant in the Porsche 911 lineup.

As per the official post, the motto for the car is carpe secundum which means get the most out of every second.

The car has a performance of 375kW (510PS) and a 4.0-litre six-cylinder horizontally opposed high-speed naturally aspirated engine, it gives a sporty tone. As per the official website, the car will not be instantly recognisable to everyone. But that is what increases the appeal and the experience of driving the stunning beast.

The car has a performance-oriented 6-speed GT sports manual transmission.

It features leather instead of Race-Tex. The steering wheel rim, top centre marking, gearshift lever and door panel armrests are completed in leather.
