A little further, in Piazza della Rotonda you will find the magnificent Pantheon , the best-preserved and most astonishing ancient Roman building of all. Although refashioned as Catholic Church, this 2,000-year old temple dedicated to all the gods stands as the most stunning example of ancient Roman engineering. Its perfect dimensions and soaring dome have astounded architects and engineers for generations.

Finally, we will wrap up our private walking tour of Rome historic center at one of the city’s most dramatic squares -the colorful Piazza Navona , with its remarkable Baroque fountains, the most famous of which is the Fountain of Four Rivers designed by Bernini.

This unique private walking tour of Rome reveals the city's most beautiful monuments and the secrets of the Roman Dolce Vita. A perfect tour for a first time visitor of Rome in addition to our Vatican and Colosseum private tours for a comprehensive understanding of the Italian capital.

This in-depth tour will make you the envy of other Colosseum visitors, with a privately guided exploration of the ancient Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. After meeting your guide near the Colosseo metro stop, you'll take a short stroll to a special entrance into the mighty Colosseum. You'll skip the line to the Colosseum and step inside an ancient world, before ascending to see the first and second tiers of the ancient stadium. Along the way, your guide will tell stories of the battles, animal hunts, public executions, and astounding mock sea battles that once took place here.

Your private tour doesn't end at the Colosseum, as your guide leads you on a fascinating walking tour of the ancient Roman Forum and up to historic Palatine Hill. With a range of start times to suit your Rome plans, it's the best way for your private group or family to experience this iconic arena!

Private Colosseum and Ancient Rome Tour Description

Your 3-hour guided tour includes:

Private Colosseum tour with skip-the-line tickets

First and second tier access at the Colosseum

Guided tour of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

A private and professional English-speaking guide

Please note that depending on the assigned entry time for the Colosseum, your tour might enter the Roman Forum first and end in the Colosseum.

Colosseum 1st and 2nd level Tickets

Travel back in time as you trace the footsteps of gladiators in the Flavian Amphitheater. After skipping the line to enter the Colosseum with your private guide, you will access the 2nd level to get a bird's eye view of this 2,000 year old structure.

Facing death at the hands of ferocious human or animal opponents, gladiators fought surrounded by 60,000 screaming spectators. It's a unique chance to imagine the fear and adrenaline that competitors must have felt so many years ago. See where emperors sat and learn the rules of the gladiatorial games for both competitors and spectators. Learn why the ancient amphitheater was named the Colosseum, plus many more interesting facts. You'll spend an amazing 1.5 hours exploring the top attraction in Rome with your expert Roman guide.

This product includes an entry ticket to the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill, for which our cost is 18 Euro per person.

Guided Roman Forum Tour

Not far from the Colosseum sits the Roman Forum, and your private guide will lead you through these ancient ruins on a guided walking tour. This Roman archaeological site was once the location of downtown ancient Rome. You'll visit some of the most famous Roman Forum buildings including the Temple of Julius Caesar, Arch of Titus, the Roman Senate House, and more. Re-live ancient history as you walk down the same roads taken by famous Roman emperors and philosophers.

Climb Palatine Hill

From the ancient downtown, your guide will lead you to a place we like to think of as the Beverly Hills of Ancient Rome. Climb the Palatine Hill and take in the views over Circus Maximus. You'll explore the 2,000 year old palaces and learn stories of Rome's rich and famous. This awe-inspiring area of towering pine trees, majestic ruins, and unparalleled views were where Romulus was said to have founded Rome in 753 BC.

By the end of your 3-hour private tour, you'll leave the Colosseum and Forum with a camera full of incredible pictures and a mind full of knowledge about life in ancient Rome.

"Going to Rome was a lifetime dream for my mom..."

Giovanni our tour guide, was the most precious soul! :) Not knowing at the start of our tour that day, he would end up being the highlight of it all :) He took care of us on our tour, as my mother had mobility issues, and had to make adjustments. His knowledge of everything and how he presented it, made all the differnce in understanding Roma's history. My mother, who is 71, and I had a private tour with Giovanni, and what an absolute blessing he was to have! He made our expierence that much more amazing. Going to Rome was a lifetime dream for my mom, and you would think she would do nothing but talk about what all she saw, but rather talked about how much she loved, and enjoyed Giovanni. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Giovanni for everything you did for us that day! We will remember you forever and always, and know you made our expierence that much more amazing!

While the Spanish Steps provide a very unusual take on a staircase, they’ve been featured in many cinematic classics including the very famous “Roman Holiday” and the more modern “Talented Mr. Ripley”. They were built between 1723-1725 in order to connect Piazza di Spagna, centered on Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s “Fontana della Barcaccia” (Fountain of the Ugly Boat), with the Piazza dei Trinità dei Monti, which boasts the imposing church at the top of the steps. History has unfolded upon this staircase for centuries and its steps continue to offer a prime place to sit and soak up the Roman atmosphere even today.

This indelible landmark is the largest Baroque fountain in all of Rome and, surprisingly, was not created nor designed by Rome’s Baroque master Bernini. In fact, Roman architect Nicola Salvi is responsible for this incredible masterpiece which rests at the junction of three streets, “tre vie” in Italian, and commemorates the Aqua Vergine Aqueduct, an important ancient water source. Standing 86 feet tall and 161 feet wide, its streams fill the area with the soothing sound of flowing water and its moonlit façade sets up for an unbeatable romantic atmosphere.

Nestled somewhere between the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon you can find Piazza Pietra. Its name Pietra, or “stone”, refers to the towering Corinthian columns of the Temple of Hadrian, which dominate the square. Emperor Hadrian’s adoptive son and successor, Antonius Pius, called for the erection of the grandiose memorial in 144 AD. Eleven of its 15-meter-tall columns have withstood the test of time and are now incorporated into a large 17th century building. The narrow square is simply stunning, especially when the columns are illuminated in the peace of the night.

Emperor Hadrian erected the Pantheon, the incredible architectural icon that we see today, nearly 2,000 years ago in 126 AD. After two earlier versions had been burned and destroyed, the goal was set to create an everlasting temple – and the Ancient Romans, with their incredibly advanced techniques and technology, succeeded. In fact, the dome of the Pantheon remains to be the largest unsupported dome in the world and continues to inspire architects and designers around the world today. What’s more, it serves as a fully functioning Catholic church that is visited by thousands of international visitors and pilgrims every day.

Piazza Navona, which provides a dreamy getaway smack dab in the center of the city, has been featured in films throughout the decades as it is, indeed, picture perfect. The piazza’s oblong shape replicates that of Emperor Domitian’s 1st century Stadium that lies beneath its cobble-stoned pavement. The church of Sant Agnese in Agone, attributed to Baroque architect Francesco Borromini, overlooks the central “Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi”, or “Fountain of Four Rivers”, which was created by his contemporary rival, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. These days the piazza is often filled with local artists and musicians who enchant visitors who take in the ambiance from bordering restaurants and cafes.

This bustling market square is located just South of Piazza Navona. It’s name, Campo dei Fiori, translates literally to “field of flowers” – a name that has stuck with it since medieval times when it was merely a meadow. In was paved in 1456 and used for executions, including that of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, whose sculpted figure stands high above the center of the piazza. The streets surrounding the “campo” are named after trades, like Via dei Cappellari (hat-makers) and Via dei Giubbonari (tailors), perhaps to signify its relevance as a commercial and street culture center.

Travel Through Centuries from Ancient to Baroque

Rome is a unique city that has been built up in layers over thousands of years and continues to grow today – an outcome is a magical place where the old and new coincide and create a stunning backdrop for locals, tourists, and filmmakers alike. You’ll have the opportunity to see some of Rome’s most cinematic stops including the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, and the Trevi Fountain, which have been featured in widely acclaimed films such as Roman Holiday, La Dolce Vita, and Three Coins in the Fountain. And, fortunately for travelers, the scenes are so stunning that getting that postcard-perfect photograph is no difficult feat. But What a Life Tours certainly goes beyond snapping the perfect photo and ticking off bucket list items. Instead, we aim to transport you to a different time altogether. Reminisce about Ancient Rome and be astounded by stories of the Pantheon and Hadrian’s Temple as you admire their imposing structures. Contemplate how the power of Ancient Emperors and the innovative prowess of ancient architects culminated nearly 2,000 years ago to create what remains to be the world’s largest unsupported dome. Then, only a brief walk away, find yourself fascinated by the Baroque Period in Piazza Navona, gazing upon masterful 17th-century works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini, while surrounded by modern restaurants and cafes. The broad scope of history that Rome covers can seem a bit overwhelming, but you don’t have to worry about it! We’ve already sorted out all the info and we’ll be sure to give you only the most riveting details!

Scope Out the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain & Pantheon Plus Gelato

Walk in the footsteps of famous romantic writers Lord Byron, Percy B. Shelley, and John Keats on the Spanish Steps. In the 1800s they each found themselves in Rome, for one reason or another, spending much of their time in Piazza di Spagna. John Keats actually lived in what is now the Shelley-Keats museum, located at the bottom ride side of the butterflied staircase. While the area was then ideal for starving artists of the time, it is now one of the most luxurious shopping areas in town, hosting big names like Dolce & Gabbana and Prada. Also noteworthy is the Fontana della Barcaccia, or Fountain of the Ugly Boat, located at the base of the steps. It was made in collaboration by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his father Pietro in 1629 and had been inspired by a legend of a flood that carried a ship to the very same place in 1598. Your trip to Rome simply would not be complete without a stop at the Trevi Fountain and, if you are superstitious, you might choose to toss a coin in, too! 3,000 euros are thrown into the fountain on a daily basis – but why? Legend has it that if you throw a coin with your left hand over your right shoulder into the fountain then you will return to Rome someday. If you throw two coins, you’ll return to Rome and fall in love. For three coins, you can add a happy marriage to the equation. Whether or not you enjoy superstitious legends and tales, we’re certain that you will enjoy an authentic Italian gelato – on us! Just a little treat from What a Life Tours before we part ways just in time for supper!

Rome Private Tour Guide

Spotlight attractions, vatican tours, walking tours, theme tours, about me and you.

Hello everybody! My name is Nicole and I have been a tour guide and an archaeologist for over seven years. Being a professional tour guide is not just a job to me, but my passion as well. I like to think about me as a liaison between different cultures. Ever since I started my career, I’ve met people from all over the world eager to come to Rome to discover my beautiful city. Through my guests’ life stories and experiences I am able to travel too, discover new places, habits and traditions. At the same time I have the opportunity to show them Rome through my eyes, live this city, which can be really hard to get to know and really understand, as locals live it. My final goal and mission is to make you able travel back home with a suitcase full of beautiful memories, happy to have discovered something surprisingly new!

We had 2 days of walking tours with Nicole. She was the best! She is so knowledgable and provided so much information for us. We have been to Rome several times and always chose a private walking tour. Nicole was one of the best tour guides we ever had. Thanks Nicole for making our trip the most memorable! Donna Mchale (Chicago, Illinois) September 13th, 2015
We just arrived home from our 12-day Italian vacation. Hands down, the highlight of our trip was the time we spent with Nicole. She was a fabulous tour guide! Truly, the best one (group or private) we had during our stay. On our first full day in Rome, she met us at our apartment and took us on a 3-hour tour of the Colosseum and Ancient Forum. On our last full day of vacation, we met Nicole again for a tour of the Vatican. Each and every time she took wonderful care of us! Kwb327 (Washington D.C) August 1st, 2015
Simply the best way to experience the Vatican in my opinion. Nicole provided a brilliant and fascinating private tour of the Vatican. She had a hard job as our children (9 & 11) were tired, it was hot and busy but she made it so interesting and really engaged with the children understanding completely how much they could take in. They keep talking about the interesting facts they discovered. We knew it would be hard to make such an historic and detailed site interesting but she managed it and the children and we really enjoyed it. Simon M (Hampton, UK) August 24th, 2016
Nicole was such a fantastic guide! She is also an archaeologist by trade and as a result has a depth of knowledge which she shares in an easy to embrace manner. She also has access to places others do not. She is young, smart and bubbly. It is obvious she loves what she does and wants to share her perspective. Our two sons in their 20's were fully engaged and entertained by her. We all learned so much even though we weren't looking to. Bundle11 (New York, USA) June 7th, 2015
My husband, daughter and I spent a great morning at the Vatican with Nicole. She is a delightful young woman...and also a trained archaeologist with incredible knowledge of Vatican artifacts and artwork. Her enthusiasm for both is contagious! Nicole helped us bypass all of that and we were in in no time! Throughout our tour, she also helped us negotiate our way around large tour groups that clog passageways. Linda B (Worcester, Massachusetts) April 30th, 2015
We took a tour of Basilica San Clemente and the Priscilla Catacombs with Nicole and enjoyed it immensely. Not only was she very informative, pointing out all kinds of details we would have otherwise missed, but also very friendly. She spoke clearly and was always open to us interrupting and asking our own questions. When it came to the Priscilla Catacombs, Nicole knew all the staff personally and was able to show us the most important sights and tell stories to bring them to life. An enchanting evening stroll

The two best times to see Rome, my husband and I have decided, are at sunrise and sunset. We were particularly enchanted with our sunset walking tour with Giulia. The tourist crowds have thinned and you experience that special, relaxed walk through a city that never ceases to impress! Giulia was a wonderful guide and a lovely, gracious person with whom we felt immediately at ease. This tour was everything we had desired and more! Thank you Giulia and thank you LivTours.

Memorable experience

We were so happy that we booked the private walking tour at sunset. The colors of the city, on the monuments and the reflections on the river take on a very special nuance when the sun is setting. As our guide Rachel described the beautiful places we visited, we joined the romans in their traditional evening stroll and watched the sun set over St. Peter's dome. We will never forget this very special experience!
