Puri Tour Guide Feature Image

Puri is a popular city of Odisha state, famous for Sri Jagannath temple, and also as a beach destination of India. This is one of the most religious cities in the country and attracts a lot of crowd throughout the year. For a budget destination, puri is a good choice within all neighboring states. It has everything like lots of temples, some historical structures, beaches, Zoological gardens, lakes and many more.

I have been to Puri multiple times and gathered some information that may help you in your next trip.

Where to stay in Puri?

Accommodations in Puri is very affordable than most of the other cities in India. You will get your stay in almost any budget. Panthaniwas by OTDC, Puri Hotel, Victoria Club, Park resort are few of them known for good luxury and impressive sea view, whereas Hotel Sambit, Hotel Dolphin will be on a budget side with sea-facing rooms. There are other options like holiday homes and Bharat Sevashram. Holiday homes can be booked from different government organization’s employee recreation clubs.

I stayed at Netai Kunj a few years back, I must say the rooms were more luxurious than of Puri Hotel and the price was one-third. The only downside, it was 5 minutes’ walk to the seashore. We are in a process to collect enough Holiday Homes listed on our Recommended Hotel Details.

A famous festival Ratha Yatra, every year took place here, where three gods (Jagannath, Balaram, and Subhadra) are pulled on Rath (decorated temple car), millions of people participate in the event. Unlike another god, these gods are made of wood and get replaced every twelve years with an exact replica. Other than the Hindu religion, no one is allowed inside the temple. But a small replica is built for those who cannot enter.

Puri Tourist Destination Guide

Enquiry now, planning a trip to puri here's our list of 16 top tourist places to visit in puri.

One of the four Dhams of Hinduism, Puri is the ancient city that brins with the magic of tourist places that can win hearts in a blink. It's only when one walks along with the many pilgrimages in Puri, chanting the name of Lord Jagannath, that he feels the outpour of peace in his soul.

The District of Puri has been named after its headquarters, Puri. According to Cunningham, the ancient name of this town was Charitra, mentioned by the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsang as Che-li-ta-lo. But the restoration of the word Che-li-ta-lo as Charitra and its identification with the town of Puri are open to doubt. The importance of the town as a seat of Vaisnavism increased when Chodaganga Deva constructed the temple of Purusottama Jagannath and installed the images of the deities. Thereafter, it became famous as the abode of Purusottama and was popularly called Purusottama Kshetra.

In 1912, the new province of Bihar and Odisha was formed and subsequently, Odisha became a separate province in 1936. After integration with Odisha on 1 st January 1948, of the feudatory states of Nayagarh, Daspalla, Khandapara and Ranapur with a total area of 3941 sq. km., a separate sub-division comprising these ex-states was added to Puri District with its headquarters at Nayagarh. The fourth sub-division of Bhubaneswar was established on 26 th January 1959. The old Puri District consisted of four sub-divisions i.e. Puri Sadar, Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Nayagarh. Puri Sadar sub-division consisted of four Tahasils i.e. 1) Krushna Prasad 2) Sadar 3) Pipili and 4) Nimapara. Again by the year 1995, Puri District was divided into 3 Districts i.e.1. Nayagarh District comprising of Nayagarh sub-division. 2. Khurda District comprising of Khordha and Bhubaneswar sub-divisions. 3. Puri District comprising of Puri Sadar sub-division only.

Puri ( poo-rih ) literally means "city" in Sanskrit. It appeals to both pilgrims and vacationers as it blends religion with fun. Puri is one of the Char Dham (Four Abodes) sites that are considered sacred to the Hindus, and the Jagannath Temple is an example of the Kalinga architecture. The 9 km (5.6 mi) long sea beach is another major attraction of the city with its fantastic sea face view and golden sand; the water is a bit rough (which is good if you like to surf).

Talk [ edit ]

Like the rest of Odisha, most people in Puri speak Odia . Due to the presence of people from various parts of India, there would not be a language problem for people who speak any other major Indian languages. Hindi and Bengali are also widely understood.

You can use cycle rickshaws, auto-rickshaws or electric rickshaws but agree on a price before you set off. Just to avoid a horrible experience in the beginning confirm twice on the price, as they frequently try to charge you more than you agreed on. There are places on C.T. Road where you can hire a Royal Enfield motorbike, good if you want to drive along the coast to Konark (Sun Temple). A cycle rickshaw is in the range of ₹520.

Stay safe [ edit ]

In cheap hotels or guest houses on Swargadwar or New Puri, try to take care of your own belongings. Do not try to go to the beach after 8PM. If you get seriously ill in Puri it is better to go on to Bhubaneswar to the Kalinga Hospital as the hospitals in Puri are very, very basic and not too clean. The hotel should be able to get a local doctor for you if you need one.

There are mouthwatering food stalls on the beach selling fish, mutton, chicken kebabs, chops and cutlets. Do not try these, unless you want to experience the medical system of Puri. Even weather-beaten, battle-hardened, super-immune Indian stomachs can not tolerate these tasty but unhygienic attacks on your digestive system. Eat out of hotels, is perfectly fine. But do not try the seashore roadside food stalls.

Stay safe from pāṇḍās in any temple. They will extract money from your pocket ruthlessly in the name of God. They are very influential and nothing can be done with the help of law. Avoid entering the innermost sanctum of any living temple (even if you are Hindu/Indian). They will ask you to offer puja or pay respect to innumerous Gods here and there of the same temple very politely/affectionately but will demand money in the name of each God separately. No use arguing with them. If you are a bit religious/curious then carry enough change so that you can donate ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10 to get rid of them without any commotion.

Stay away from monkeys. Don't lure them with food and other stuff.

An Insight into Puri Tourism

Taking its share of charm from the Bay of Bengal is the city of Odisha which spreads spirituality over the eastern part of India. Puri, a fabulous tourist place which shines brighter in summers, smells earthy in monsoon and seems beautifully rustic in winters has a heart to heart connection with its travellers. It’s a tourism place in Odisha where devotees bow down in front of the divine lord Jagannath in the morning, sit back on the beach and feel serendipity in the evening and in the rest of the afternoon explore its every corner.

The city has been mostly known by the name Jagannatha Dhama due to the presence of the pristine Jagannath Temple from the 12th century. Jagannath Temple is one of the religious Char Dham sites in India which is most visited during the Rath Yatra. Moreover, it's only when the pilgrims see and get a touch of the chariot on which the Lord is carried that they feel their journey in Odisha is complete.

Moving forward, the city is a bliss for the ones who like attaching their soul to nature as Puri is also known for being shelter to the famous Chilika Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to not just migratory birds, aquatic animals but also to Spotted Deer, Blackbuck, Golden Jackals, and Hyenas. Once the travellers are done with the wildlife sightseeing tour, the city offers the splendid sight of its many top places to visit like Chilika Lake, Buddhist sites and more.

What to Know When Visiting Odisha's Jagannath Temple

puri tourism guide

Sharell Cook.

The Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha , is one of the holy char dham abodes of God that are considered to be extremely auspicious for Hindus to visit (the others are Badrinath , Dwarka, and Rameshwaram). If you don't let money-hungry Hindu priests (locally known as pandas ) mar your experience, you'll find that this massive temple complex is a remarkable place. However, only Hindus are allowed inside.

Puri is just under two hours south of Bhubaneshwar , Odisha's capital city. The nearest airport is situated in Bhubaneshwar. There are frequent buses and trains from Bhubaneshwar to Puri. Puri's railway station also receives long distance trains from all over India.

Temple History and Deities

Construction of the Jagannath temple dates back to the 12th century. It was initiated by Kalinga ruler Anantavarman Chodaganga Dev and later completed, in its current form, by King Ananga Bhima Deva.

The temple is home to three deities -- Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra -- whose substantially sized wooden idols sit on a throne. Balabhadra is six feet tall, Jagannatha is five feet, and Subhadra is four feet tall.

Puri is regarded by Hindus as one of the four holy Char Dham — sacred abodes associated with Lord Vishnu (the Hindu god of preservation) in India. Lord Jagannath is considered to be a form of Lord Vishnu, who has descended to earth to provide protection during the current Kali Yuga (dark age). He's the presiding deity of Odisha and is integrally worshiped by most households in the state. The culture of Jagannath worship is a unifying one that promotes tolerance, communal harmony, and peace.

Based on the C har Dham , Lord Vishnu dines at Puri (he bathes at Rameswaram, gets dressed and anointed at Dwarka, and meditates at Badrinath). Hence, a great deal of significance is given to food at the temple. Referred to as mahaprasad , Lord Jagannath permits his devotees to partake in eating the 56 items that are offered to him, as a means of redemption and spiritual advancement.

Important Features of the Temple

The Jagannath temple has four entry gates, each facing a different direction. The main gate on the eastern side of the temple, known as Lion Gate, is guarded by two stone lions. An unmissable towering pillar known as Aruna Stambha stands about 11 meters high outside it. The pillar represents the charioteer of the Sun God and used to be part of the Sun Temple in Konark . However, it was relocated in the 18th century after the temple was abandoned, in order to save it from invaders.

The temple's inner courtyard is reached by climbing 22 steps (called Baisi Pahacha) from the main gate. There are approximately 30 smaller temples surrounding the main temple, and ideally, they should all be visited before seeing the deities in the main temple. However, devotees who are short on time can make do with just visiting the three most important smaller temples beforehand. These are the Ganesh temple, Vimala temple, and Laxmi temple.

Other notable features inside the 10-acre Jagannath temple complex include:

  • an ancient Kalpavata banyan tree, which is said to fulfill devotees' wishes.
  • the world's largest kitchen where the mahaprasad is cooked in clay pots. Apparently, the kitchen produces enough food to feed 100,000 people each day!
  • Anand Bazaar where the mahaprasad is sold to devotees in various sized pots. It's available throughout the day but fresh dishes are provided after 2-3 p.m. Anand Bazaar can be directly accessed by taking the north gate exit.
  • a small museum called Niladri Vihar near the western gate, dedicated to Lord Jagannath and the 12 incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
  • Koili Baikuntha, where Lord Krishna was believed to have been cremated after being accidentally killed by hunter Jara Savara. It's in the northwest corner of the temple, between the inner and outer compound wall. During the Nabakalebar ritual, new idols of Lord Jagannath are carved out of wood and the old ones are buried there.

More than 20 different rituals are performed at the temple daily. The rituals reflect those carried out in everyday life, such as bathing, brushing teeth, getting dressed, and eating.

In addition, the flags tied to the temple's Neela Chakra are changed every day at sunset in a ritual that's been going on for 800 years. Two members of the Chola family, which was given exclusive rights to hoist the flag by the king who built the temple, perform the fearless feat of climbing 165 feet without any support to affix new flags. The old flags are sold to a few lucky devotees.

How to Visit the Temple

The Jagannath temple is open from 5 a.m. to midnight. To avoid the crowds, the best time to go is early in the morning around 7 a.m. after the first aarti ritual, or after 9 p.m. The ambiance is evocative at night, when lamps are lit and the temple is illuminated.

Vehicles, with the exception of cycle rickshaws, are not permitted near the temple complex. You'll need to take one or walk from the car park. The temple's main Lion Gate is located on Grand Road. Entry to the temple compound is free. You'll find guides at the entrance, who will take you around the temple complex for a negotiable fee (about 200 rupees). It's not compulsory to hire one though.

Due to government restrictions, it's no longer possible to go inside the inner sanctum of the temple where the deities are kept. Instead, the deities can be viewed from a distance, depending on how crowded it is. A new ticketed darshan (viewing) system is proposed but yet to be fully implemented.

There is also a ticket system in place for viewing the temple's famous kitchen. Tickets cost 5 rupees each. Don't miss it! The food is prepared in the same manner as it was centuries ago, with traditional methods and implements. About 15,000 new clay pots are transported to the temple every day for cooking in, as the pots are never reused.

Allow a couple of hours to completely explore the temple complex.

What to Keep in Mind

There are unfortunately many reports of greedy pandas forcefully demanding excessive amounts of money from devotees. Recent intervention and monitoring by the police has greatly curbed this problem. The pandas are known to be experts at extracting money from people though, particularly at the smaller temples within the complex.

If you are approached by any pandas , it's strongly recommended that you ignore them. If you do wish to avail of any of their services, make sure you negotiate the price beforehand and do not give any more than agreed. Most hotels have in-house pandas and you may be pushed to use their services. Be aware that you will pay a premium if you choose to.

If you wish to donate money to the temple, do so only at the official donation counter and obtain a receipt. Don't hand over money to the pandas or anyone else.

Barricades have been placed inside the temple to ensure the orderly flow of devotees and reduce harassment by pandas. There's a rush towards the inner sanctum though.

Note that you're not permitted to carry any belongings inside the temple, including cell phones, shoes, socks, cameras, and umbrellas. All leather items are banned as well. There is a facility near the main entrance where you can deposit your items for safekeeping.

Why Can't Everyone Go Inside the Temple?

The rules of entry into the Jagannath temple have caused considerable controversy. Only those who are born Hindu are allowed inside the temple. However, there have been instances of famous Hindus being denied entry. These include Indira Gandhi (the third Prime Minister of India) because she had married a non-Hindu, Saint Kabir because he had dressed like a Muslim, Rabindrinath Tagore since he followed Brahmo Samaj (a reform movement within Hinduism), and Mahatma Gandhi because he came with dalits (untouchables, people without a caste).

There are no restrictions as to who can enter other Jagannath temples, so what's the issue at Puri?

Numerous explanations are given, with one of the most popular ones being that people who do not follow the traditional Hindu way of life are unclean. Since the temple is considered to be the holy seat of Lord Jagannath, it has special importance. The temple caretakers also feel that the temple is not a sightseeing attraction. It's a place of worship for devotees to come and spend time with the god that they believe in. Past attacks on the temple by Muslims are sometimes mentioned as reasons too.

In 2018, the Supreme Court asked the temple to consider allowing all visitors inside, irrespective of their religion. This is yet to be decided though.

If you're not a Hindu, you'll have to be content with viewing the temple from the street or paying some money to view it from the roof of one of the nearby buildings (the old library opposite the main gate is a popular spot).

Ratha Yatra Festival

Once a year, in June or July, the idols are taken out of the temple in what is Odisha's biggest and most iconic festival. The Ratha Yatra festival sees the gods being transported around on towering chariots, which have been made to resemble temples. The construction of the chariots commences earlier in the year and is an intensive, detailed process.

What Else to Do Nearby

Local responsible tourism company Grass Routes Journeys offers an interesting and insightful three-hour guided tour of the Old City surrounding the Jagannath Temple (including the pottery area). This tour is highly recommended for foreigners who aren't permitted to go inside the temple but want to learn about it.

Raghurajpur handicraft village is about 15 minutes by car from Puri. There, artisans carry out their crafts while sitting in front of their prettily painted houses. Pattachitra paintings are a specialty.

Puri's carnival-like main beach is a huge attraction for Indian tourists. They flock there in droves to frolic in the water, and go for joy rides on horses and camels along the sand.

Even in this 21st century, the economy of this religious town is mostly dependent on the activities surrounding the 12th-century old Jagannatha Temple. Most tourists visit Puri during its vibrant festivals, especially RathaYatra (the Chariot festival). Additionally, 24 festivals including 13 major ones are held every year inside the temple premises. The ancient Markandeswar Shiva Temple and the Konark Sun Temple are some of the oldest monuments in India.

Puri is blessed with numerous beaches such as Konark, Baleshwar, Swargadwar, Baliharachandi, etc. The Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary boasts of sandy beaches, cashew plantations, coastal dunes, and groves of Casuarina trees. The sanctuary has been serving home to Blackbuck and Olive Ridley Sea Turtles that nest on the beaches.

The artistic land of Odisha has given birth to many skilled artisans who master Sand art, applique art, stone and wood carvings, and Pattachitra paintings. The Sudarshan Crafts Museum houses traditional sculptures, training, and residential facilities, a Japanese-style Buddhist temple, library, showroom, and workshop. Chilika Wildlife Sanctuary houses various migratory birds besides being an aquatic sanctuary to uncountable species of fish. The sunrise and sunsets are a pleasure to experience. Nalbana Bird Sanctuary, also known as Nalbana Island is home to thousands of birds that descend during the migratory season.

Puri: A Temple Town that Loves the Sea

One of the Char Dhams in India, Puri’s popularity as a religious destination has been a blessing for Puri tourism. The city revolves around the great Jagannath Mandir and the Rath Yatra for its Hindu visitors. And even if you have different beliefs, there is no reason to skip visiting Puri.  Along with its temples, the city offers a wonderful coastline where visitors can experience the ocean and its Creator from a close distance.

Highlights: A yatra through the ages

As you explore Puri, make sure you do not miss out on these sights.

Places of Worship

One of the major reasons for the blooming tourism in Puri is the magnificent temples it houses. The Konark Sun Temple, built by the King Narasimhadeva in 1250, is a beautiful example of Orissa’s architectural heritage. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, it is renowned for exquisite stone carvings along its entire structure. Then there is the Shree Jagannath Temple, an even more ancient structure. Built in 1198, the shrine is dedicated to Jagannath, an incarnation of Vishnu, Lord of the Universe. It is designed in the Kalinga style of architecture and is believed to be the symbol of universal peace. The Rath Yatra concludes every year at its premises where thousands of devotees throng to the temple.

The city’s proximity to the Bay of Bengal is a gift for locals and visitors alike. Out of the places to visit in Puri, its beaches are a must-visit after the beautiful temples. The first Asian beach to receive a Blue Flag certification, Puri beach is one of the most popular sites in the region. Its choppy waters make it perfect for surfing enthusiasts and visitors can stroll, browse pearls and seashell souvenirs, or marvel at the splendid sand sculptures. And if you wish to experience a relatively more peaceful atmosphere, you could head to the Balighai beach. Located only 8 km away from Puri, you could try your hand at parasailing or water skiing. And a barely known fact about this beach is that you will find Olive Ridley turtles laying their eggs in the sand during the months of December and January. A tempting view for nature lovers.

Nearby Attractions

Once you have finished visiting all of Puri’s famous places, do not miss out on the neighbouring sights awaiting you. 50 km away from Puri is Chilika Lake, Asia’s biggest inland salt-water lagoon. The lake is dotted with small islands of lush green natural beauty and is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a narrow neck of land. The flocks of migratory birds make the winter months a great time to visit the lake. Follow this with a visit to Raghurajpur village, 15 km away from Puri. It is set against a picturesque backdrop of lush green and tropical trees along the bank of the Bhargavi River. The fascinating thing about this place is that every household here is involved in some form of handicrafts. These include its specialty Pattachitra paintings along with stone carvings, wood carvings and wooden toys. You could browse through the painted murals on the houses, and even buy a few pieces as souvenirs for your home.

Cuisine

Odia cuisine is as flavourful as any other Indian region, but its specialty lies in its seafood. The prawns and pomfrets cooked with a hint of spices are particularly famous. Bidesi Ghara is a traditional fish-lover’s paradise with dishes like doi ilish (fish in a curd gravy) and kosha mangsho (pan-fried mutton). You could also try savouring the food at roadside shacks for an authentic experience. Its most popular dish is chudaghasa, which is flat rice blended with jaggery and curd. And the highlight for every visitor coming to Puri is the bite of mahaprasad or bhog at Ananda Bazaar, which is first offered to Lord Jagannath and then distributed amongst the devotees. Finally, all of this can be washed down with the green coconut water, locally called paida.

Interesting Facts about Puri: Myths & Mysteries

  • The English word ‘juggernaut’ originated here because of the Rath Yatra seen at the Jagannath Temple every year.
  • It is reported that the Jagannath Temple has no shadow at any time of the day, no matter which direction you look at!
  • The flag on the dome of the temple is changed every day by a priest and if, for any reason, it is not changed, the temple must be shut for 18 years.

Location: Beauty by the bay

The district headquarters of Puri district, the city is located on the Bay of Bengal, 60 km south of the state capital Bhubaneshwar.

Timings: Best time to Visit

As the temperatures fluctuate between 16 o C and 28 o C in the winter months (October to February), a visit to Puri at this time is ideal for those looking for a pleasant trip. Although the monsoons (June to September) show heavy rainfall, the city attracts thousands of devotees who come to pay their offerings to Lord Jagannath during the Rath Yatra. The temperature ranges between a stable 27 o C to 31 o C making for a comfortable climate. Summers can be an extreme ordeal with scorching heat and temperatures reaching as high as 45 o C. The city is best avoided from March to May.

How to Get to Puri: The Road to Heaven

By Air – The closest airport to the city is the Biju Patnaik International Airport at the state capital Bhubaneshwar which is located 60 km away from Puri.

By Rail – Puri railway station is connected to Kolkatta and Khurda by a broad-gauge line of the South Eastern Railways.

By Road – The city is linked to Bhubaneshwar via NH 203 and NH 203 B connects Puri with Satapada via Brahmagiri.

History:  A story of a temple

Puri has had different names since the ancient period, but all historical records revolve around the historic Jagannath Temple. The temple was built by the King Indradyumna Ujjayni in 318 AD after priests and servitors spirited away the idols to escape the wrath of the Rashtrakuta king Rakatavahu. The medieval and early modern periods saw the city and its temple being invaded 18 times to loot the treasures of the temple. Later, the city was part of British India from 1803 till India attained independence in 1947.

With great food, great people and its ever-present temples and beaches, Puri tourism is going to keep growing. So, don’t miss out and do make the most of it!
