Visit Iceland´s newest geothermal wonder after experiencing the Golden Circle.

reykjavik excursions sky lagoon

Discover the unique natural treasures of Iceland on our Golden Circle Classic tour, and end the day with a visit to Reykjavik’s newest geothermal spa, the spectacular Sky Lagoon ! You’ll see gushing geysers and golden waterfalls , you’ll walk between continents, and you’ll learn about Viking history, all in one dazzling day.

After departing from Reykjavik, your first stop is Thingvellir National Park. Looking across this incredible landscape, you’ll see gigantic cracks in the Earth’s surface. This is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart from each other, making Iceland a little bigger every day. That means you can stand with your feet on two different continents at once here!

Thingvellir is a special place for Icelanders. It was the home of the first Viking parliament, which sat here for centuries from 930AD, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your next treat is a visit to Geysir , part of the Haukadalur valley geothermal area. Geysir is the Icelandic word for “gush”, and this spouting hot spring gives its name to gushers worldwide. Geysir is silent nowadays, but you’ll enjoy seeing Strokkur instead! Every few minutes, Strokkur erupts, sending cascades of superheated water up to 30 meters into the sky. It’s your chance to get close up for brilliant pictures of a phenomenal natural marvel, feeling the ground tremble beneath your feet as you await the next thrilling eruption. Just remember to stand upwind!

The next stop on our Golden Circle Classic tour is Gullfoss. One of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls , Gullfoss (the “Gold Falls”), is fed by millions of gallons of freezing meltwater from Langjokull, the second-largest glacier in Iceland. The thundering milky-blue waters plunge more than 30 meters down into a steep canyon. That means there’s always shimmering sheets of spray, setting off endless rainbows on sunny days. There are several viewing platforms at different levels, giving you lots of fantastic picture opportunities.

After seeing these three geological gems, you might think that you’ve seen the best that Iceland has to offer. But we have one more memorable experience for you to enjoy! Icelanders love their geothermal spas, and the newest is the Sky Lagoon, only 10 minutes from downtown Reykjavik!

Inspired by traditional Icelandic bathing culture, the Sky Lagoon offers you a fabulous oceanside spa experience from a 250-foot infinity pool with unforgettable views. You’ll enjoy a heavenly seven-step ritual, leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated as you soak up the beauty of the sensational surroundings. Lie back in the warming waters, have a cocktail at the swim-up cave bar, or have a snack at the Sky Café.

Only Iceland gives you so much in one day – enjoying the best of her nature, history and culture, it’ll be a day you’ll never forget.

Our South Coast Bus Tour From Reykjavík starts with our fast and efficient pickup service. We can collect you from one of multiple city center locations. Once this is down, we join the famous Route 1 highway and journey east of the city along the idyllic southern coastline.

Skogafoss waterfall in summer

Our guides will enlighten and entertain you along the way. Your first stop of the day is to  Skógafoss waterfall , an immense and powerful waterfall fed by the river Skógá river. If you are feeling energetic you can climb the 370 steps to the top to get a a bird´s eye view and another perspective. It is just as impressive from the ground and you can fells the mist and spray from the waterfall from a distance.

After a short stop in the little town of  Vík , our next stop is Reynisfjara beach , the wild North Atlantic waves crashing on the black beach and shadowed by the majestic basalt cliff columns. According to local folklore, these basalt columns are the remains of trolls who ventured out one night too close to the dawn and were frozen by the rays of the rising sun. This beach is the most famous of its kind in Iceland and perhaps the world. It derives its black hue from ancient volcanic eruptions when molten lava from Katla collided with seawater. The lava cooled and broke into sand instantaneously.

We continue on to  Sólheimajökull , a glacier tongue of the larger Mýdalsjökull. We will take a short walk to the glacier where you can see the effects that global warming has had on the ice here. The glacier has retreated hundreds of meters in the past decade leaving behind a glacier lagoon in its wake. If conditions allow, your guide will get you up close and personal with the glacier and you will be able to touch this impressive but retreating glacier.

Our final stop of the day will be at the renowned  Seljalandafoss waterfall . This is the perfect photo opportunity especially if you take the trail that leads behind the waterfall. Just beware that this can be a wet experience so we recommend that you wear moisture wicking or resistant clothing.

Sky Lagoon is Iceland´s newest hot-spring bathing lagoon. Closer to the city and less crowded than the Blue Lagoon, your stop here is the perfect opportunity to unwind and relax after your long day on Iceland’s wild and windy southern coast. This immersive cross between a swimming pool and thermal spa rests on a small cliff overlooking a bay creating an infinity pool effect.

What’s included

My husband won't stop talking about this excursion or showing people the photos and videos he took - which is not at all like him! He would agree with everything Ninny Ebaum has just written - it was cloudy and hail fell at the top of the fairly arduous climb so you do need warm, waterproof clothes and good boots. Going back down was more difficult because of the scree and angle of the slope but this was a once in a lifetime experience that he, our son and his wife will never forget. I was glad to stay behind with our granddaughter who was below the age limit of 9 years! They would have liked more time to enjoy the experience which was over too soon.

We took the guided volcano hike. The bus picked us up on time, and our guide, Raven, gave us information as we drove to the trail head. The information provided by Reykjavik Excursions on the hike were right on! It was the degree of difficulty they said (moderate), took the amount of time to climb, both up and down (1 1/2 hours each way), the equipment they recommended was correct. If it had rained, we were prepared- luckily it did not. And we had the perfect amount of time to observe the volcano. Raven did the hike with our group. Even with different speeds, she kept in contact, and was so knowledgeable and helpful, and interesting!! She was great and added to an awesome experience!

The highlight of my holiday! I was feeling nervous about this hike as I wasn't sure what to expect but there were people of varying abilities doing the hike and everyone looked out for one another. The tour guide was very informative and made sure that everyone got up and down the volcano ok. The path was full of snow but we were advised on the best places to walk. Even though the volcano finished erupting last year, you could still feel the heat from the lava and see the gases as the lava takes months, even years to fully solidify underneath. Be prepared for all weather's as it was lovely at the bottom of the volcano and snowing when we got up there. Book this trip if you love hiking, it isn't for the faint hearted but worth doing if you can. Also, I felt like I could go at my own pace which was what I was nervous about

Not only do you walk up the volcano but you get to see other geothermal relates places after your walk. Well worth the money!
