Concert Review: Rob Thomas Tour Launch Is ‘Smooth’ Sailing

Rob Thomas

Three songs into the launch of his “Chip Tooth Smile” tour, Rob Thomas took a moment to issue a disclaimer: that “f— ups” were possible on this first show of a six-week trek. It had been a minute since he last performed as a solo artist, and though the Jersey shore was a stone’s throw away, he had yet to settle into his sea legs.

But to a theater full of “like-minded people,” as Thomas described the crowd at the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, New Jersey, the singer’s solo bow exhibited no such cobwebs. In fact, you could say that the show, The show, which featured a balanced set list of new tracks, solo hits, two Matchbox Twenty selections and a cover of David Bowie ‘s “Let’s Dance,” was smooth sailing.

Taking the stage dressed in the same denim jacket he models on the album cover, the 47-year old singer set the mood right away with the latest single, “I Love It,” singing “I’ll just keep it real ’nuff, everybody, hold up,” then taking a long beat for dramatic affect as the room erupted in applause.

With that, Thomas treated the primarily female audience to back-to-back hits, including “Mockingbird” and “Lonely No More,” all the while engaging with his fans — and his taut band — with direction, eye contact, rhythm, and a little funkiness. At one point, Thomas and bass player Al Carty fully demonstrated the sexiness of the instrument, with Thomas cracking, “I think someone just got pregnant.”

Popular on Variety

A consummate performer, Thomas is so much fun to watch. It’s impossible to keep your eyes off of him as he works every inch of the stage, including two ramps leading up to the drum kit. Soaked in sweat, he only briefly exited the stage once, to give his band — keyboardist and leader Matt Beck, guitarist and saxophonist Korel Tunador, Carty, guitarist Frank Romano, drummer Abe Fogle, and background singers Ayo Awosika and Meloney Burns — room to jam.

But strutting aside, the quieter moments also captivated. Early in the show, Thomas gave a shout-out to his bandmates in Matchbox, relaying the news that keyboardist Paul Doucette sent a text to him earlier in the evening wishing him good luck on the tour’s kick-off performance. The band’s classic “If You’re Gone”and a stripped down “3 A.M.” made the setlist — he dedicated the latter to his mother, who passed away from cancer. In a tender moment, Thomas opened up about the complicated relationship he had with his mom, which he attributed to both being young, and promised to no longer refer to her as “crazy.”

Throughout the show, Thomas switched things up, strapping on a guitar to play an unreleased song, “Sunday Morning, New York Blue” — that Doucette felt should have made the album. Taking a seat at the piano, he delivered a sweet rendition of “Little Wonders,” a song written about his dog and featured on the soundtrack to the 2007 Disney film, “Meet the Robinsons.”

The new material, particularly the inspirational single “One Less Day (Dying Young),” worked well live, with Thomas twirling the mic and leading the crowd in a fist-pumping celebration of life. Crowd pleasers “Smooth” and “This is How a Heart Breaks” rounded out the encores, with Thomas visibly moved by the crowd’s reaction to the ballad “Pieces.”

And it must be noted that it takes a special performer to come out on the first night of his tour and announce the opening act, Abby Anderson. The 22-year-old was taken by surprise by the act considerate gesture, explaining to the audience that when she saw the singer approaching the stage, she thought “Mr. Rob” was coming to give her a pep talk. “I’m getting spoiled already on this tour,” the young country singer laughed.

Anderson brought Texas charm and youthful enthusiasm in a set that included smart covers of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” and the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You.”  A simple ballad about “knowing your worth”, “Make Him Wait,” was lovely, and her new single, “Good Lord,” caught on quick with the crowd.

Last night’s performance, and the rest of the tour, will be recorded and documented as limited-edition double CD sets, which the audience can reserve the night of the show. Proceeds will benefit Sidewalk Angels, Thomas and his wife Marisol’s charity supporting no-kill animal shelters and animal rescues.

2019 NORTH AMERICAN ‘CHIP TOOTH SMILE TOUR’ WITH SPECIAL GUEST ABBY ANDERSON

Rob Thomas is one of the most distinctive artists of this or any other era – a gifted vocalist, spellbinding performer, and acclaimed songwriter known worldwide as lead singer and primary composer with Matchbox Twenty as well as for his multi-platinum certified solo work and chart-topping collaborations with other artists. Among his countless hits are solo classics like“Lonely No More,” “This Is How A Heart Breaks,” and “Streetcorner Symphony,” Matchbox Twenty favorites including “Push,” “3AM,” “If You’re Gone,” and “Bent,” and of course  “Smooth,” his 3x RIAA platinum certified worldwide hit collaboration with Santana which celebrates it’s 20 th anniversary this year. Thomas earned three GRAMMY® Awards for his role as co-writer and vocalist on “Smooth,” which toppedBillboard’s “Hot 100” for an astounding 12 consecutive weeks and spent 58 total weeks on the chart, the #1 song in Billboard’s “Top Hot 100 Rock Songs” chart history and #2 “Hot 100” song of all time. As if that weren’t enough, “Smooth” was declared the all-time #1 song on Billboard’s “Adult Pop Songs” radio airplay chart, the #1 song of the rock era based on chart performance on Billboard’sHot 100, and recently declared to still hold the spot as the second most successful song of all time by Billboard.

In 2004, Thomas was the first artist to be honored with the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s prestigious “Hal David Starlight Award,” created to recognize a composer in the early years of his or her career that has already made a lasting impact.  He has won numerous BMI and ASCAP Awards, and twice earned the “Songwriter of the Year” crown from both Billboardand BMI. Overall, Thomas has contributed to sales of more than 80 million records.

Thomas made his solo debut with 2005’s platinum certified  …Something To Be  and immediately made history as the first album by a male artist from a rock or pop group to ever debut at # 1 on the Billboard 200. Thomas’ sophomore solo album, 2009’s  Cradlesong , marked still another milestone, generating two #1 singles in “Her Diamonds” and “Someday.”  Billboard chart history was made once again, with Thomas tying P!nk for the most #1 Adult Top 40 hits by a solo artist as well becoming the first male solo artist to score multiple chart-toppers at the format.

In 2012, Matchbox Twenty returned with their first all-new album in a decade,  North . Fueled by the hit singles, “She’s So Mean,” “Overjoyed,” and “Our Song,”  North proved a landmark for the band, their first ever #1 debut and Billboard 200chart-topper. Thomas’ third solo album, 2015’s internationally acclaimed  The Great Unknown , had a top 10 debut on the SoundScan/Billboard 200upon its release and featured hit singles “Hold On Forever” and “Pieces.”

A charismatic, engaging, and indefatigable live performer, Thomas has spent much of the past two decades on the road, fronting massive world treks with Matchbox Twenty and on his own as well as a series of intimate acoustic tours. Thomas is also a dedicated philanthropist, establishing Sidewalk Angels Foundation with his wife Marisol Thomas in 2003. The organization is dedicated to providing critically needed funds and support to over 20 no-kill animal shelters and animal rescues, across the country, that help to fight for the rights and fair treatment of those with no voice. About rob thomas.

Life, love, and music eventually arrive full circle. We reach the place where we began not only wiser, but with more wonder for the bearing of the past on the future. Three-time GRAMMY® award winner Rob Thomas progresses by recognizing his roots. In fact, the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and Matchbox Twenty co-founder picks up a thread from his formative years and weaves a bold and bright new chapter on his fourth solo offering, Chip Tooth Smile (Emblem/Atlantic Records].

Fittingly, the experience earned from over two decades as one of modern music’s preeminent songwriter and frontmen empowers him to do so.

rob thomas tour 2019

He most certainly does on Chip Tooth Smile. In fact, the record represents a confluence of firsts for the New York-based artist. After three tour packed summers, he took the summer of 2018 off and commenced writing for what would become his latest album. Three years removed since 2015’s The Great Unknown, he amassed a career high 60 ideas to be whittled down into the next body of work. All along, there would be no choice but to work with longtime friend Butch Walker behind-the-board as producer. It notably marked his first collaboration outside of producers Matt Serletic and Steve Lillywhite, but one he admits to “manifesting.”

“I told everybody that I was going to make a record with Butch before I even called him,” he laughs. “When I finally did talk to him, I said, ‘Listen, you have to do this, because I told everyone you’re doing it!’” The duo primarily collaborated “across the miles” with Thomas recording vocals in his New York studio and Walker cutting drums, guitars, keys, bass, and synth “like a band” out of his Santa Monica studio. The musicians would congregate on either coast for one week at a time often collaborating out of the Atlantic Records studio. Walker and Thomas bonded over a mutual fascination with eighties staples as the producer pushed the singer towards a “live vocal energy.”

“Butch wanted my voice to sound like it sounds live,” continues Thomas. “There’s a rawness to the delivery. “Nothing’s overly produced. We really bonded over the same music. It was everything from Cutting Crew to Cyndi Lauper, INXS, and Depeche Mode. This was two buddies working together, but the sound is all Butch. He sets up everything in the room the way a band would play, and he jumps from instrument to instrument. It sounds like a group. I think he’s got multiple personalities anyway, so he plays each instrument differently,” Thomas grins.

This vibrant sonic backdrop encouraged Thomas to push himself as a lyricist and a writer. First and foremost, he embraces his role as a storyteller.

“I don’t want to discount that I’ve been doing this for twenty-plus years and make myself sound younger,” he elaborates. “I’ve earned all of the years I’ve grown, so I wanted to put those into song. I don’t mind sounding a little more mature. By that, I mean sounding like a grown up. I was writing about getting older. I was writing about experiences I’ve been through that I could’ve only been through by getting older, by facing mortality, by having a son, by having a family, and by having responsibilities that I didn’t have when I first started out. It’s very autobiographical about where I’m at now and where I’m headed.”

rob thomas tour 2019

Elsewhere, “Timeless” lives up to its title with a heartfelt chant, “All this shit we’re going through. Nothing compares to you. Our love is timeless” before calling out classics. He namechecks everything from “Sister Christian” to “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”—culled from a text dialogue with his wife about their favorite tunes from the era. “The Man To Hold Water” pairs delicately fingerpicked guitar with intimate verses, while “I Love It” hinges on boisterous and bluesy riffing and a warbling synth solo. “Early In The Morning” confronts racial insensitivity and urges social consciousness over organic percussion. Produced by Benny Blanco, “We Were Beautiful” projects youthful nostalgia through a lens of experience. “Breathe Out” bookends Chip Tooth Smile with a heartfelt denouement regarding, “everything the record talks about—growing up, getting older, pacing yourself, and realizing tomorrow is another day…and a gift.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Thomas has consistently made history. He received a rare Diamond Award from the RIAA for Matchbox Twenty’s 12-times platinum debut Yourself or Someone Like You. His 2005 platinum solo debut, Something to Be, became “the first album by a male artist from a rock or pop group to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 since the chart debuted.” Its follow-up cradlesong cemented him as “the only male artist with multiple #1 hits at Adult 40,” while he tied P!nk for “most #1s by a solo artist in the chart’s history.” Not to mention, he teamed up with Santana for 1999’s “Smooth,” which not only earned three GRAMMY® Awards, but also held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks and spent 58 total weeks on the chart. The song emerged as #1 song in Billboard’s Top Hot 100 Rock Songs” chart history and “#2 Hot 100 Song of All-Time”. “Smooth” was also declared the all-time #1 song on Billboard’s “Adult Pop Songs” radio airplay chart, the #1 song of the Rock Era based on chart performance on Billboard’s Hot 100 and recently declared to still hold the spot as the second most successful song of all time by Billboard.

Thomas became the first-ever recipient of the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame Hal David Starlight Award created to recognize a composer in the early years of his or her career that has already made a lasting impact.

Moreover, he garnered numerous BMI and ASCAP awards and would be cro

wned “Songwriter of the Year” by both Billboard and BMI. Total record sales for his output exceed 80 million worldwide. Additionally, his commitment to philanthropy remains as staunch as his commitment to music. After being involved in many charitable endeavors, he and his wife, Marisol, started SIDEWALK ANGELS FOUNDATION which provides critically needed funds and support to no-kill animal shelters across the country that help to fight for the rights and fair treatment of those that have no voice.”

2021 marks the release of something about Christmas time, Thomas’ fifth solo album release and his latest following 2019’s Chip Tooth Smile. He also recently reunited with Santana for collaborative single “Move” & will hit the road once again in May 2023 with Matchbox Twenty.

In the end, Thomas comes full circle and delivers a record both befitting of his reputation and indicative of his future. “I write a lot of songs about the human condition, how people interact with each other, and how we deal with our environments,” he leaves off. “I want people to take them and attach them to their lives. I hope they possibly speak to what they’re going through, and I’m always thankful they’re still listening,” he smiles.

Rob Thomas on Grief, New Solo Record & 20 Years with Wife and 'Best Friend' Marisol (Exclusive)

Rob Thomas

The 'Timeless' singer also talked Matchbox Twenty's future & whether he'll be singing at fanboy 'Bachelor' star Jared Haibon's wedding.

As he prepares to release his new solo record, Chip Tooth Smile , Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas is sharing the personal drive behind the “autobiographical” record, from his 19-year, hurdle-fraught marriage to wife Marisol, to learning to embrace ageing after facing the death of loved ones.

While grief may be a lesser-heard topic on the radio, the three-time GRAMMY winner recently became inspired following a conversation with Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, who pointed out that the friends were officially too old to die young. However, the meaning intensified after Thomas lost several loved ones, experiences reflected in the catchy single, “One Less Day (Dying Young),” with lyrics like, “I've seen my friends fall away before their time, and I've been afraid that I may follow in their light.”

“There’s so much focus on songs about staying young forever and I have a lot of friends who are like, ‘Oh man, getting older sucks,’ and it’s like, ‘Wait a minute -- that’s like, the only good alternative,’” Thomas tells ET ahead of Chip Tooth Smile 's release on Friday. “You’re born, you hope to get older, every day is a win and the alternative is really bleak. And over the last couple of years, we’ve lost some people who are really close to us, who don’t get that chance to get any older, which makes you realize how much it’s a privilege that’s not afforded to everyone. It’s not just about me and my age group, but about understanding how moving on to that next generation and that next day is a win.”

Thomas says that, like with many hard times throughout his life, it was songwriting that helped him process his grief. He also learned the importance of taking the necessary time to deal with and learn from the losses. “You realize that, in some levels, life goes on and it’s part of a process that always works out that way,” he says. “But every ending is another beginning, so I think you need to find a healthy balance between reverence and appreciation, and a proper mourning time for the things that you lose. And not leave a piece of yourself with that loss -- move on and try and be stronger and learn from those moments.”

For Thomas, appreciating every day means cherishing every moment with Marisol, a former model, and his 20-year-old musician son, Maison , from a previous relationship. Thomas and his wife have been together for more than two decades, tying the knot in 1999 in Santa Ynez, California, and are preparing to mark their 20th wedding anniversary in October, with Thomas crediting the fact the pair are besties for the strength behind their relationship.

“The other night, my wife and I were out and we realized that after three or four hours the two of us could just sit alone and bullsh** like you do with any of your friends,” he says. “We had the same kind of fun on our own that we do if we’re around a whole bunch of our friends. At the end of the day, she is my best friend and I happen to be married to her and we were saying how if anything ever happened and we were no longer married, we would still probably wind up being best friends. Like, after we hated each other for a good couple of months, we’d probably go back to being best friends!”

The pair’s unbreakable bond is moreso #couplegoals given how they have been tested time and time again over the years. Since vowing on their wedding day to “trust what changes the future may bring,” the two have faced Marisol’s ongoing health issues, which saw her desperately searching for accurate diagnosis and treatment for more than a decade before finally being diagnosed with several tick-bourne diseases, including Lyme disease, following brain surgery in 2015 .

The potentially fatal illness causes seizures, pain and visual disturbance, and in Marisol’s case, the infections are also believed to have triggered Hashimoto’s disease and Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia, which attacks facial nerves and has been nicknamed the “suicide disease,” because it “makes you wish for death.” The couple opened up about the illness during a 2017 interview with ET , during which Marisol recounted her journey from a driven woman co-managing Thomas’ career and running the Sidewalk Angels Foundation (the couple’s non-profit, which assists animal rescue groups) to having her life “stolen” from her. Thomas, meanwhile, likened the condition to having “a weird alien inhabit my wife.”

Since the powerful interview, the couple have continued to open up about living with the illness , which Thomas says is important, given that it’s easy to take one glance at his Instagram profile and misjudge the couple’s lifestyle. While Marisol looks stunning and radiant in Thomas’ sweet posts, the “invisible” nature of illnesses like Lyme disease means many patients are frequently suffering behind their smiles and between their social media posts.

“You see a post like we did the other night and it looks like we’re living this unbelievably charmed, beautiful life and I think it’s good for people to know that, just like with everybody else, those Instagram moments are your highlight reel,” Thomas notes. “We’re showing our best times. She still struggles all the time with the way that she feels -- she was struggling that night.”

“You also really, really learn what you should do with a good time when you have one,” he adds about coping with Marisol’s illness. “When you get a little moment when you’re not in pain and you get a little moment when you can have a good evening, we really appreciate it.”

Marisol’s health battles and the years the couple faced searching for answers and navigating her diagnosis were a strong theme of Thomas’ previous solo album, The Great Unknown , particularly the powerful ballad “Pieces,” which he wrote while spending hours in the desert in Mexico while waiting for Marisol to undergo treatment.

The ongoing significance of the song was evident at a recent fundraising show for the Sidewalk Angels Foundation at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California, where Thomas uncharacteristically asked the audience to take their seats before he sat down at the piano and performed the touching ballad, moving the crowd to dead silence.

Thomas says Chip Tooth Smile is just as reflective of his personal life, representing “everything that’s happening to me from when I put out that last record to now.” The album starting to take shape while Thomas was touring The Great Unknown , and he continued songwriting through Matchbox Twenty’s  A Brief History of Everything tour in 2017, amassing several records worth of songs before presenting them to musician and producer Butch Walker, who has worked with Fall Out Boy, Katy Perry, Gavin DeGraw and Taylor Swift. “I had already told everybody that I was going to make a record with Butch Walker … I just never told Butch,” Thomas laughs. “It was kind of like manifest destiny.”

Thomas will hit the road with special guest Abby Anderson on his Chip Tooth Smile tour , kicking off on May 28 in New Jersey, and he confirms that, following the 46-date run, new Matchbox Twenty music is in the pipeline. The group, who started out as Tabitha’s Secret and have been together more than 20 years, last put out 2012’s North and are currently focused on solo ventures, with lead guitarist Kyle Cook currently touring his solo record,  Wolves . “I was just on the phone with Kyle the day before yesterday,” Thomas says of the group’s latest discussions. “It’s a different world out there, so if we want to go out and tour together it doesn’t necessarily mean we have to go sit in a studio for six months and make a 12-song record. We could maybe just make a couple of songs that we think are really good then go out and tour. So, we’re definitely going to be doing something and there’s definitely new music involved with that, but everybody is really enjoying the stuff they’re doing [on their own] as well, so we want to do stuff that makes us happy then get back to Matchbox when that makes us super happy as well.”

In the meantime, Thomas could make one celebrity fan super happy come summer time.

Bachelor in Paradise star and loyally dedicated Thomas fanboy  Jared Haibon is preparing for his wedding to Ashley Iaconetti, and after declaring that he was “passionate” about Thomas on television, he has since taken his fandom to a new level by donating 10% of proceeds from the sales of his and Iaconetti’s new children’s book, Lucy and Clark: A Story of Puppy Love , to the Sidewalk Angels Foundation. The couple even made a recent trip out to an Indio, California, charity concert for the foundation, rocking out front row and hanging with the “Timeless” singer backstage.

So, will Thomas be singing at the nuptials?

“They haven’t asked me yet,” he laughs. “I’m not really much of a wedding singer. I did the reception one time for a friend, but it’s not really a habit. Unless they just invite me ... if they just invite me and I get drunk, then you never know what’s going to happen!”

Thomas adds that he was initially wary of the guy who “kept talking Rob Thomas, Rob Thomas, Rob Thomas,” on the ABC reality series, but now thinks highly of both Jared and Ashley.

“I got to meet him and he turned out to be this very sweet, lovely guy and Ashley too -- they’re just a really real couple and very genuine people,” he said. “My first question when I met her was, ‘So, do you hate me at this point? Are you sick of me?’”

While Thomas may not have his invite to the wedding yet, Haibon tells ET that he is high on the guest list.

“Of course, he’s invited!” the reality star said while attending the launch of the Backstreet Boys: The Experience   exhibit at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles earlier this month. “He doesn’t even have to sing. On our wedding day, I just want the people who I care about most -- family, friends … and Rob Thomas! Rob Thomas has been such a big, impactful part of my life and my adolescent years leading to my adult years. I would love for him to come to my wedding, but that’s entirely up to him.”

There's no one in the professional golf world that can quite keep up with Scottie Scheffler right now, who picked up his sixth PGA Tour win of the year on Sunday at the Travelers Championship, but former Alabama golfer Justin Thomas put on an admirable showing over the weekend.

Thomas finished tied for fifth at 18-under-par, which resulted in a $702,500 payout. It is Thomas' third top-five finish of the season and 53rd of his career.

Three other former Alabama golfers also made the cut at the Travelers Championship. Lee Hodges finished T31 at 10-under. Davis Riley was T48 at 5-under, and Nick Dunlap was 66th at 1-under.

  • Alabama gymnastics announced on Friday that Shania Adams would be returning for a fifth year with the program. "Making the decision to come back for my fifth year, with this program, was something I didn’t want to miss out on because I know what all this team is still capable of," Adams said in a statement. "We still have more to accomplish together, and I know there’s still more I can give, in return, to this program and its people. It’s always an honor representing the Script A, and I can’t wait to have that opportunity for another year."

Countdown to Crimson Tide's 2024 Football Season Opener:

On this day in crimson tide history:.

June 24, 1927 : Former Minnesota football star and Tulane coach Clark Shaughnessy said in a talk in New York that Southern football has grown dramatically in the last few years and much of the credit has to go to Alabama coach Wallace Wade. When asked if Wade just had better facilities and players than the other schools in the South, Shaughnessy said, "No, there isn't one doubt the chief reason for Alabama's showing is Wallace Wade. He knows the game. He is a splendid leader and a remarkable coach."

June 24, 2019 : The oldest living Crimson Tide football letterman, Don Salls, turned 100.

Crimson Tide Quote of the Day:

“I was cutting out, off the tackle, and I cut left instead of cutting right. [Coach Frank Thomas] hollered, ‘Salls! That may be the way they do it in New York, but you’re in Tuscaloosa now!’ I was tickled to death to know that he knew my name and knew where I was from. I just grinned all over and went back to the scrimmage and kept on going. That’s the only thing Coach Thomas ever said to me.”—Don Salls on his favorite Crimson Tide memory besides winning the national championship

Rob Thomas kicked off his North American Chip Tooth Tour last night (May 28) in Red Bank, New Jersey at the Count Basie Center for the Arts. The six-week trek is Thomas' first solo tour in a while, but the "smooth" rocker killed it for his first night!

His 18-song setlist carried only three songs off his newest album, Chip Tooth Smile , and the rest was cherry-picked from his past efforts like ...Something to Be, Cradlesong , and the Great Unknown .

The first Chip Tooth song opened the night up - "I Love It," and later in the set he performed "Can't Help Me Now" and "One Less Day (Dying Young.)

Thomas also performed two Matchbox Twenty songs during the set - the first being "If You're Gone" and then later on a stripped down version of "3 A.M." which was followed by a cover of David Bowie's legendary song "Let's Dance."

Thomas offered an array of his best solo hits like “Mockingbird” and “Lonely No More.” The set ended on double bangers "Fire on the Mountain" and "I Am an Illusion."

His three-song encore fired off with crowd pleasing hit "Smooth" and ended on "This is How a Heart Breaks." Check out the setlist below!
