What people love about fully guided tours from rome to venice.

We had so much fun on this tour. It's amazing how much we saw in just a week! We learned a lot about the cultures and different types of food and paintings/architecture which was really cool. Emma/Jean/Francesca were amazing guides :) Pros: - most of the time we were by ourselves to do whatever we want - the 2 of us were the only ones on the tour lol - really affordable - hostels were all good, people were all friendly - the tour guides were locals and really passionate about their city Cons: - the optional activities are expensive and they were booked early in the morning :/ - there is only 2 dinners included - our Rome guide didn't put in time for lunch, so we were very hungry and walking for 4 hours in the heat. We also didn't have time to go to St. Peter's Basilica :/ - we only had an afternoon in Venice Overall, it was really memorable and I would recommend it :)
My sister and I did the Mama Mia Tour throughout Italy May 27-June 8. Each one of our tour guides was amazing, we had Carlo and Max in Rome, Giovanni in Sorrento, and Nedas in Florence and Venice. All of them were so fun to tour with, always happy to take our picture and since the groups were smaller we could be a bit more customizable with our experience and what we wanted to see during walking tours of the city! The guides were probably one of my favorite parts of the trip because after spending so much time with them they began to feel like more of a friend than a tour guide which was awesome! I really enjoyed the welcome dinners as well to help break the ice with fellow travelers and get to know the guides better. They all were very funny and knowledgeable of the location we were at and happy to provide food/activity recommendations for our free time. The only critique I would give the company is we were often not meeting our guides at the accommodation, we were asked to meet them somewhere in the city whether that was a train station or a specific street in the city. Being in a city I had never been to before this was a little difficult at first, especially when the meeting point was far away. I wish they would put us in direct contact with who we are meeting so we can message them if we are lost or running late, and who we should be looking for. With that being said, we had a couple times where we arrived at the meeting point and nobody came or came much later once I called the company a few times, which I think could have been resolved if we were just given the contact of who we were meeting from the beginning or making a WhatsApp group chat of some sort for the group to send updates and communicate better. But after one incident of a meeting point mix up the company was very accommodating in helping us the rest of the trip and adding a gondola ride in Venice for us to make up for a hiccup in Rome. Overall I would recommend this trip to other fellow travelers! You see such amazing things with amazing tour guides and I would do it again and again!
The tour was comfortable and on time and our guide was lovely

  • In order to enter Italy, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code VFR.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Venice and depart from Rome (or Naples on the tour extension).
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost if they are arriving or departing on the standard day.
  • When you arrive in Venice, a Go Ahead representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a Go Ahead sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.
  • Please note that your arrival transfer may be via water taxi.

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a steady-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach
  • Occasional transportation by boat
  • About 2-3 hours of bus time daily

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day- this includes city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Stone pathways and cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
  • The city of Venice is fully pedestrian with 3-5 steps leading up and down the many bridges throughout the city.
  • The terrain around the Roman Forum and the Colosseum includes inclines and uneven stairs.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.

Climate Considerations

In the summer months (June-September), travelers can expect heatwaves with temperatures consistently above 90F.

  • Venice experiences the Acqua Alta, or high water, during the fall and winter months. During this time, travelers can expect the lower parts of the city to flood for a few hours during the day.

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team. We’re here to help!
  • This tour includes various modes of transportation including water taxi and private motor coach. Some modes of transportation will have raised platforms or steps and often not provide access to ramps or lifts.
  • Water taxi rides in Venice are included in the price of your tour.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • In Venice, water taxis are the main form of transportation and typically require travelers to step down into a rocking boat.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and boats.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels, airports, and boarding water taxis.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • We recommend packing your Insurance Card (from your primary insurance provider) in your carry on luggage.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel to strike the balance of comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Accommodations are typically three and four star hotels.
  • All accommodations include a private bathroom.
  • Most rooms will include a safe for valuables.
  • Your hotels will have Wifi, but it may be limited to common areas.
  • Elevators in hotels are not guaranteed.
  • Some hotels on this tour require travelers to walk with their luggage a few blocks as buses cannot drop travelers off right out front.
  • Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • We cannot guarantee that your hotel accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with the hotel once they are confirmed about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes three dinners. Included meals may be plated set menus, buffet or family style depending on the location. Dinners include one glass of beer, wine, or soft drink and water, coffee and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Venice and Northern Italy are known for flavorful meats and pastries.
  • Tuscany is world-famous for its wine, oil, sauces, and pasta. Menus favor subtle, lighter pastas and desserts made with nuts, fruit, and honey. Try a dish featuring the region’s Chianina beef, perhaps the most prized breed of cattle in all of Italy. For wine, popular Tuscan reds include Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which are primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. Well-known white wines are also made around the San Gimignano region.
  • Roman food is typically freshly prepared and varies depending on the season. Must-try bites include cacio e pepe (a simple dish of pasta, cheese, and pepper) and supplí (a fried rice ball similar to Sicily’s arancini).
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Italy is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.
  • If you are interested in visiting any of Florence's many museums during your free time, we recommend that you make reservations in advance. See uffizi.org for the Uffizi Gallery or accademia.org for the Accademia Gallery. Please note that the museums are closed on Mondays.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, rome – arrive in rome with a night tour of the city’s highlights.

The inspiring and vibrant life of Rome embodies its rich history that dates back to the Roman Republic with elements of the empire standing tall at the heart of the ancient city center. The aroma of espresso will spill out of cafes that line charming piazzas, filling what were once opulent villas while captivating ancient statues and mosaics that decorate the galleries of celebrated museums. Your flight will land at Fiumicino Airport, where your private transfer will greet you upon your arrival to Rome. Once at the hotel, you will have the opportunity to settle into luxury and the comforts of the city before meeting your guide in the hotel lobby for a private, introductory tour of Rome.

Your guide will offer insight into the historical and cultural landmarks, taking you from the Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon and from the Spanish Steps to Piazza Navona. The magnificence of Rome will come to life as you witness the depths of preservation and heritage that shine brightly amidst the Baroque design of the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Bernini devised and carved the spirited sculptures that rise out of the basin, depicting allegorical figures of the four main rivers that were known at the time, consisting of the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Rio de la Plata. Plants and animals from the respective regions add intricate detail to the sculpted figures and are emphasized by the life of the piazza.

What's Included:

Rome – Discover Grandeur in Ancient Rome and the Vatican Museums

In the morning, the aromas of roses and peonies will drift out of the flower stalls that are scattered around the city and will be accompanied by the scent of freshly pressed espresso as it emanates from the neighborhood bars where locals enjoy breakfast before heading to work. Your expert guide will meet you in your hotel and escort you on a private tour of the ancient ruins for which Rome is famous, taking you from the Forum to the Colosseum and into Palatine Hill.

The history that is visible on Palatine Hill will captivate you with images of Rome’s earliest known inhabitants long before the palaces, aristocrats, and emperors. Your guide will highlight the archeological majesty of the ancient world beyond the Colosseum and temples that stand in the Forum, revealing sites like the Cryptoporticus, which is a semi-subterranean corridor with barrel vaults that span nearly 427 feet long and act as a tunnel that link the Imperial palaces. The Palace of the Flavians rises above the cypress trees with arches that are visible from the banks of the Tiber River, connoting one of the first structures built to display the growing splendor of Rome.

You will continue to St. Peter’s Square for a fantastic, private tour of the eponymous basilica and treasured museum. The magnificent dome was designed by Michelangelo and soars above the city at 448 feet. As you enter the opulent structure, you will find traces of frankincense and myrrh as they fill the air. The entire basilica can host a congregation of more than 60,000 people, and your guide will lead you to the breathtaking Pietà , which is a work of Michelangelo that depicts a young Mary as she cradles Jesus after the crucifixion, which was carved from a single block of marble when the artist was 24 years old.

Florence – Visit the Unique Splendor of Pisa and Highlights of Florence

After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you at your hotel and guide you into Tuscany to reach the fascinating city of Pisa. The city was once a powerhouse of the Mediterranean Sea, growing in prominence in the 11th century.

As you walk through the city center of Pisa, your guide will point out the opulence of the architecture with famous Pisan aesthetics, including the Santa Maria della Spina whose gothic embellishments add to the luster of the rose windows, archways, and a niche that hosts statues of Jesus and the Apostles. The main allure of the city remains the architecture in the Piazza dei Miracoli , where you will find the Leaning Tower. The foundations of the bell tower were laid in the 12th century and support 294 steps that lead to the top. The list encompasses nearly four degrees between the base and upper level and is adorned with the thin pillars and narrow arches of the iconic Gothic and Pisan design.

You will reach Florence in the afternoon and have some free time in your luxurious accommodations to relax before your introductory tour of the Renaissance city. You will stroll along cobbled lanes the circle the remarkable Duomo at the heart of the city with the iconic brick dome that towers above the rooftops at 376 feet tall. In the neighborhood of San Lorenzo, you will find the unforgettable aroma of coffee as it drifts out of the cafes, and the scent of leather stems from the bags, coats, shoes, and belts that are on display in the surrounding shops. For a different perspective of the city, your guide will take you into the illustrious San Lorenzo Church so you can view the tombs of the Medici family inside, featuring marble sculptures by Michelangelo, Donatello, and Lippi.

Florence – Delight in Renaissance Art at the Uffizi and Accademia

The aroma of freshly baked cornetti that has been stuffed with chocolate and hazelnut spread will permeate the streets with their mouthwatering aromas in the morning. Your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby after breakfast and will be eager to reveal to you the marvels of Florentine and Tuscan art. Your tour will begin at the Uffizi Gallery, which was built as an office for the Florentine magistrate in the 16th century. The marble halls line lavish floor-to-ceiling windows.

The galleries display artists in chronological order according to their time period, allowing you to discover the works of contemporaries between the 13th and 18th centuries. The priceless works reflect the changing aesthetic of each century, covering religious pieces to allegories and including the coveted work of The Annunciation by Leonardo da Vinci. The stunning piece resembles a portrait that depicts the Madonna, who was visited by Archangel Gabriel, with a remarkably realistic landscape in the background.

You will continue to the Accademia Gallery for insight into more of the masterpieces that are housed in the splendor of Florence. The aroma of rich gelato will fill the city in the afternoon, giving way to the decadent scent of grilled Florentine steak that has been topped with sea salt. Inside the museum gallery, your guide will provide greater context to the displays that host the intricate musical instruments and Botticelli’s Madonna . Michelangelo’s David crowns the end of a hall, standing 17 feet tall and depicting the biblical warrior looking stoic before his epic battle with Goliath. The complex detail of the statue will enrapture you as you notice the rippling muscles, lifelike eyes, and curly hair.

Venice – Travel to Lovely Verona before Enjoy a Boat Tour of Venice

The aroma of leather returns in the morning as vendors open their doors along the back streets of San Lorenzo. Your private transfer will meet you at the hotel after breakfast and escort you to the dramatic city of Verona, which is famous for its preserved Roman history and connection to Shakespeare’s epic tale of love: Romeo and Juliet . Your guide will lead you through the beauty of Verona that spans from the strong defensive walls of Castelvecchio to the ancient archways of the Roman Amphitheater that date back to the 3rd century AD.

The 44 rows that are located inside the theater continue to accommodate 22,000 spectators during the Verona Opera Festival in July and August, combining the marvels of the ancient world with the splendors of music and the luxuries of today. You will continue through the heart of town to reach Casa di Giulietta, which is home to the renowned heroine of love: Shakespeare’s Juliet Capulet. Notes that have been written from fans decorate the walkway that leads into the courtyard where the characters shared their first kiss. This location attracts pilgrims from around the world who are eager to pay homage to the spirit of the story.

You will continue to Venice, and the city rises out of the lagoon with lavish marble palaces that line the waterways and walkways. A series of 118 islands are connected by over 400 bridges, including the famous Rialto Bridge, which connects two bustling banks along the water at the midpoint of the Grand Canal. After taking some time to indulge in the comforts of your hotel, you will step onto a boat for a tour of the Grand Canal. Gliding down the waterway, you will find incredible images from the Renaissance, including the Palazzo Corner della Ca’ Grande and the Palazzo Grassi. The grandeur of Santa Maria della Salute acts as a Baroque monument from the 17th century that was built to honor the end of the plague. The beauty will guide your eye to the massive dome that crowns the structure with an interior that possesses the Marriage at Cana by Tintoretto.

Venice – Traverse the Remarkable History and Monuments of Venice

The morning in Venice fills with the aromas of fresh pastries such as fritole , which is a fried donut that is made with lemon, sugar, and Marsala wine. Your guide will lead you through the bustling Rialto Market where vendors call out to passersby, offering samples of cheeses and cured meats in addition to visions of fresh seafood that were caught earlier that day. You will reach the picturesque St. Mark’s Square and find the splendor of the bulbous domes from the eponymous cathedral. Your specialist guide will show you the charms of the architecture and art that is often hidden beneath the shining, gilded mosaics of the interior that cover 45,639 square feet.

After visiting the basilica, you will continue into the depths of the Doge’s Palace, which will lead you to the opulent design of the Scala d’Oro, which is also known as the Stairs of Gold. The lavish, gold decoration glints along the ceiling and leads from the Loggia to the offices and reception rooms, capturing the prestige and glamour of the former Republic. The hidden room of the Sala del Consiglio dei Dieci, which was a room that was once used by the Council of Ten, is a secret state court. The remarkable design of the room derives from the elegant wood paneling and frescoes that include Jupiter Hurling Thunderbolts against the Vices by Veronese.

Venice – Depart for Home

In the morning, you will find the scent of pastries stuffed with cream or ricotta accompanied by the aroma of frothy cappuccino. The boutique shops around Venice opens their doors to reveal window displays of intricate masks and Murano glass. DAY 9 – Pompeii excursion from Rome

Depart Rome this morning on a full day excursion to Pompeii. Drive along the Sun Route motorway through the scenic regions of Lazio and Campania, rich in astonishing natural beauty. At a distance, you can view (weather conditions permitting) the magnificent Abbey of Montecassino perched high on the mountaintop, scene of a huge battle near the end of World War II in which the Abbey was completely destroyed, but now lovingly restored. As you pass the Bay of Naples, majestic Mt. Vesuvius marks the way to Pompeii, visit the city that was frozen in time under a thick carpet of volcanic ash almost 2,000 years ago. The tragic fossils of people attempting to escape, along with their children and dogs are still visible, along with the preserved ruins of the Temples of Apollo and Jupiter, and the Forum. Leisure time for lunch on own before returning to Rome. Overnight: Rome Meals: Breakfast

One week italy itinerary for rome, florence and pisa.

A couple of years ago, before I set sail for South America, my friend got married in Italy. Being the great friend that I am, I travelled to Italy for the wedding, and I decided to take a holiday to explore more of the country while I was there. I loved Italy, and Italian food, people, art, and architecture just blew me away. I wanted to share this one-week Italy itinerary that will take you to Rome, Florence, and Pisa.

Italy Itinerary Days One to Three: Rome

The Colosseum in Rome - The Best Places to Visit in Italy

Rome is magnificent. There are so many wonderful things to see in Rome that three days are just enough to scratch the surface, but if you only have two days in Rome then you can still fit in most of the highlights.

Key Rome attractions include the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Roman Forum, or the Pantheon. I chose not to visit the Vatican, and although I want to go back and see it, I don’t regret spending my time simply wandering the streets and eating. This is another essential activity in Rome or anywhere in Italy for that matter!

Bear in mind that the Colosseum and St. Peter’s will both have hefty queues, so I suggest doing these first thing in the morning. For me, the Colosseum was the highlight of Rome. Walking inside and imagining gladiators battling in front of hordes of Romans gave me goosebumps!

YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: Where to Visit in Italy in Winter

If you’re visiting Italy on a budget there are plenty of free things to do in Rome , but sadly, when I was there, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain were both hidden beneath scaffolding. This is another excellent excuse for me to make a repeat visit!  You can take in some of the key sites walking around the city, and then you can hop on the bus or take a taxi when you get tired.

Trastevere is one of the best areas to stay in Rome , but even if you aren’t staying there you should at least visit for dinner.  Choose any of the restaurants here for one of the best meals you will ever have! Enjoy a glass of wine in any piazza, and watch the world go by. Italy is not a country for rushing, so just sit back and relax.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Speak the few words of Italian you know, gesticulate wildly, and fall in love with Italy or an Italian if you can! And know that Rome is just the beginning of your adventure in Italy.

Top things to do in Rome include:

  • Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket
  • Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill Entry Tickets
  • Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius Volcano Full-Day Trip
  • Street Food Tour with Local Guide
  • Fiumicino Airport: Direct Bus Transfer to Rome Termini

Italy Itinerary Days Four to Six: Florence

Florence Cathedral from the Bell Tower - 1 Week Italy Itinerary

Trains from Rome to Florence can take as little as an hour and a half, so book an early train to enjoy the rest of the day in Florence. Here, too, morning is the best time to visit the most popular attractions to try to avoid crowds.

To see Florence at its most magnificent, spend your mornings sightseeing and the afternoons eating and exploring. Florence was my favourite city in Italy. It’s compact, stunningly beautiful, and less in-your-face than Rome. I could imagine myself living there.

You have to visit the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s “David .” The detail and size of the statue surprised me, from the muscles in David’s leg to his smooth marble skin, along with the fact that Michelangelo began work on his masterpiece when he was just 26 years old, finishing it three years later.

For more classic Italian art, the Uffizi Gallery is home to works by Botticelli, Piero della Francesca, and many more. Book slots online to avoid the crowds at both museums, or get there before they open and join the queue.

Book your tickets here for the Uffizi Gallery or to see Michelangelo’s David

In the afternoon, admire Il Duomo, the huge cathedral that dominates the skyline of Florence, and climb the bell tower for unbeatable views of the city. Stroll down to the river at sunset to see the Ponte Vecchio bridge bathed in golden light and its reflection on the Arno River.

Across the river is the Piazzale Michelangelo, with a bronze replica of “David” and more stunning views of Florence. The walk up the hill is worth the effort!

Florence’s market is a haven for foodies, where you can buy risotto, pasta, cheese, wine, olive oil, and more to take home, as long as you can resist the temptation to eat everything before you leave.

With creamy gelato, focaccia sandwiches stuffed with cured meats and cheeses, fresh bread with a drizzle of olive oil and rich balsamic vinegar, spaghetti in a garlic sauce with clams, the food in Florence is to die for. Even if you do nothing else, just eat in Florence, and you’ll be happy.

Top activities in Florence to book include:

Skip-The-Line Uffizi Gallery Timed Entrance Ticket

Timed Entrance Ticket to Michelangelo’s David

Pasta Making Class with Wine, Limoncello, and Cake

Tuscany Day Trip with Lunch at Chianti winery

Italy Itinerary Day Seven: Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

Two days are best to get to know Pisa, but one day is enough to see the highlights and the Leaning Tower. I booked another morning train from Florence to Pisa, which took about an hour, and then I hit the streets to explore the city.  You could also do a day trip from Florence to Pisa and return to Florence in the evening.

The Leaning Tower is the most popular attraction in Pisa. Many tourists simply visit the Tower in the Piazza dei Miracoli and neglect the rest of this charming city. Take time to discover Pisa’s piazzas, side streets, cafés, and bars to get a real flavour of Italy away from the crowds. Alternatively, try a self-guided bike tour of Pisa to explore the city on two wheels.

The best things to do in Pisa include:

  • Reserved Entrance to Leaning Tower of Pisa & Cathedral

All-Inclusive Guided Tour with Optional Leaning Tower

Pisa Food Tour

Pisa Self-Guided Tour by Bike

I ended my trip in Pisa and took a cheap flight back home to the U.K. If you’re flying to and from Rome, then catch a train to whisk you back to the capital. If you have more time, you can add other destinations to your itinerary, such as Bologna , Venice , or Milan to explore more Italian city life.

For a taste of picturesque waterfront towns, try Lake Garda, Lake Como, or Cinque Terre.  This two-week itinerary by train has a great route, taking in Venice, Milan, Cinque Terre and Assisi, as well as Rome Florence.  No matter how long you spend in Italy, I guarantee it won’t be enough!

Getting Around Italy

Italy by train.

Travelling in Italy by train is easy, at least to these key destinations. I recommend booking tickets in advance, especially for high-speed trains . With only one week to explore the country, you don’t want to risk wasting time. However, at the station watch out for over-helpful scammers who will grab your bags and expect a tip for carrying them onto the train. Only give your tickets to the official ticket collector!

Italy By Car

If you are a confident driver you could also consider hiring a car and driving around Italy .  An Italy road trip gives you the freedom and flexibility of being able to stop when and where you like, although driving in Italian cities needs nerves of steel!  It helps if you have a navigator with you who can help with directions and moral support, as well as sharing the driving.

Other Italy Travel Tips

You shouldn’t have any trouble getting around Italy or talking to the people you meet in English, although learning some words of Italian will no doubt help you along – even the basic buongiorno (hello) and grazie (thank you) will make people even more welcoming!

If you’re staying for a while or will want to use a lot of data while you’re travelling you may want to buy a sim card in Italy or check out an eSIM .

eSIMs are a cheap and useful way to make sure you stay connected, as long as your phone is eSIM compatible. Most new models do have eSIM capability but double-check before you purchase.

Airalo eSIMs are super easy to use and set up, and you get email notifications when your eSIM is about to expire so you can top up easily if needed.

You should also check the fees your credit or debit card will charge you for withdrawing euros in Italy or for each card transaction.  I use my Wise travel credit card which has great rates on transactions and withdrawals.

Great guide! I’ve been to Italy a few times and there is just so much to see! I like that your itinerary doesn’t cram too much into one week!

I´ve been to Italy many times. My favourite city is Rome. Historical sights, great food, architecture shopping…. it has it all.

Pisa was much larger than we thought it would be, we really enjoyed visiting and had a gelato by the banks of the river. This is a great itinerary for anyone travelling to Italy, thanks for sharing.

What a helpful guide! We ended up spending about 7 days between Rome and Florence on our visit to Italy last fall and we really loved our time there. Don’t forget to get your ticket validated!! 🙂

Rome, Florence, Pisa, all unique and magnificent in their own way. We traveled across the three places in 5 days, but wish we had spent a couple of more days at each place to really enjoy them. Loved Florence the most, simply breathtaking.

I have not yet been to Italy and can’t wait to visit someday. It’s such a popular destination and I’ve definitely seen a ton of photos of the Leaning Tower. Such great advice to explore Pisa beyond the leaning tower because I would have thought there was nothing else there to see. The pedicab tour of Pisa sounds like a lot of fun too!

This is a great week itinerary. My first trip to Italy was 9 days and we skipped Pisa, but squeezed in Venice, a short stop in Padua and Assisi. It was literally end to end. I think this is probably better because you get more time in cities than on buses. The second time I went, I stayed in Florence for 8 days and took two day trips to Siena and Bologna and it was my preference of the two visits because it was so much more chill. Although, I think no trip is complete without time in Rome. So much history!

I was in Italy 20 years ago. I had a scholarship and I explored Italy for six month. Toscana was my favorite and besides the famous Rome, Florence, and Pisa, I enjoyed the small medieval town of Montepulcuano, Pienza, Luca. I don’t have enough words to describe the beauty if Italy but the fact that I stayed only in Rome for one week maybe has something to say.

What a comprehensive itinerary that you have owned. This post is filled with beautiful scenery and I love how you have tucked them all together and made a great itinerary . I haven’t been to any of this place and I actually have long been dreaming to visit Rome and Florence. Hopefully I get the chance to visit here soon. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Rome is incredible but sadly I was underwhelmed by Florence. That area is however stunning. I love the little mountain towns that you can explore at leisure. So medieval

For those who don’t have much time, below is a quick summary of this 14 day itinerary. Later in this guide, we’ll share more detailed information about what to do, where to stay, and where to eat at each place.

  • Day 1-3: Rome (3 nights)

  • Day 8-11: Cinque Terre (3 nights)
  • Day 11-12: Verona (2 nights)
  • Day 12-14: Venice (2 nights)

We followed this two-week itinerary in the summer of 2023 with our two daughters (aged 15 and 11). We all fell in love with the culture and lifestyle of Italy and were enamored with its ancient history and modern flavors.

We had 12 nights; but I’ve added an extra night to Tuscany and Cinque Terre to take it to 14 days, which in hindsight, is what we wish we did.

We had four nights in Paris before arriving in Italy, and if we were to do it again, we’d drop France and just spend the extra time in Italy.

We loved Paris, but much preferred Italy and it would have saved us money and exhausting travel time.

Stop 1: Rome, The Eternal City (3 Nights)

Begin your Italian adventure in Rome , where ancient ruins, Renaissance art, and delicious cuisine converge.

Rome is the capital city of Italy and the former capital of the Roman Empire. It’s a city that receives over 10 million international tourists a year, making it one of the top 20 cities in the world.

And there’s a reason for this! The city is packed with historical attractions and world-famous landmarks, including the Seventh Wonder of the World, the Colosseum. Don’t miss out on a chance to walk the ancient Roman Forum and marvel at awe-inspiring Roman engineering at the Pantheon and immerse yourself in the city’s millennia-old history.

Rome is a walkable city, with chances to discover hidden gems in the backstreets. You can indulge in authentic pasta dishes at local trattorias, and don’t forget to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain for good luck.

Rome’s enchanting atmosphere will set the stage for the wonders that lie ahead.

Here were the highlights for us on our three day stay in Rome. Click on the links to learn more about each experience.

  • Roman Street Food Tour . An absolutely must for foodie fans who want to learn more about Rome’s cuisine. It’s not all pizzas and gellato, I promise you!
  • Roman Forum and Palatine Hill and the Colosseum . No trip to Rome is complete without seeing the Colosseum and ancient ruins of the Roman Forum. We recommend you do to a guided tour of this so you can skip the lines and learn about the history and engineering from a knowledgeable guide.
  • Vatican City Tour , the world’s smallest country and home to the Catholic Church. The Vatican can be explored in a day, but it’s also best to do a guided tour so you can skip the lines – especially for the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel that sees waiting times of up to 3 hours.
  • The Pantheon, a former Roman temple and Catholic Church, and the final resting place of famous Roman artist Raphael, as well as Italy’s first king, Victor Emmanuel.
  • Trevi Fountain , an iconic landmark known for its intricate baroque design with statues and turquoise pool. Throw a coin over your left shoulder for good luck.
  • Spanish Steps, a picturesque old staircase connecting Piazza di Spagna to Piazza Trinità dei Monti.
  • Explore Trastevere (and other cool Rome neighborhoods)
  • Wander the Streets of Rome
  • Rome Catacombs, which are located just outside the city, and are a network of underground passages housing tombs of Rome’s Christians and Jews in the 5th century.

Recommended Tours of Rome

  • Street food history tour of Rome
  • Guided tour of the Colosseum
  • Guided walking Tour of Vatican City
  • Pantheon Guided Tour
  • A Go City attraction pass may save you money on attractions.

As our apartment rental host told us, “ choose a restaurant, any restaurant, they’ll all be good. It’s Trastevere. Forget waiting in line. ”

So that’s my advice to you – it possibly works for all of Rome.

Stay away from the touristy piazzas and head to the side streets and surrounding neighborhoods for fantastic food in Rome. Here are some a couple of suggestion:

  • Mama Eats in Trastevere . Our favorite restaurant on the trip – 100% gluten free and I’m talking pastas, pizza and tiramisu. At an affordable price. They can make dishes non-gluten free as well.
  • Gelateria del Teatro is also one of the most appreciated and loved ice cream parlors in Rome in the artisan field since 2006.
  • Fiore has great street food – perfect for lunch and quick snacks.

We loved staying in the Trastevere neighborhood. We could walk to all top Rome attractions from there while having the experience of staying in a more local area with fantastic food options and bustling nightlife.

Plus, the streets are so pretty!

We booked this lovely home rental (it was spacious and lovely with a fantastic host) and also considered this  apartment rental in the same neighborhood .

Stop 2: Tuscany, Rolling Hills, Charming Villages and Grapevines (2 Nights)

Next, venture into the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany , known as Italy’s wine growing region.

Experience the romance of the region as you explore vineyards, olive groves, and charming hilltop towns.

Sip on world-renowned wines in Chianti, wander through the medieval streets of Siena, and marvel at the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Tuscany’s beauty is not just in its scenery but also in its warm hospitality and delectable cuisine.

We loved our Tuscan farm stay and could have easily stayed longer, which is why I recommend three nights, instead of our rushed two!

Tuscany is a huge region filled with many small villages, attractions, wineries, and more.

Plan your trip well and focus on the villages and area near to your farm stay – which is one of the best things to do in Italy! Click on the links for more information.

  • Stay at a Tuscany Farm Stay , this is the best way to feel the laid-back, authentic lifestyle of Tuscany. Ours was incredible! Some of the best wine I’ve ever had.
  • Take a Tuscany Cooking Class . We did ours at our farm stay, but you can find them across the region. Tuscan food is different from most Italian cuisine, specializing in cheese and, of course, Florentine Steak.
  • Wine Tasting, a must-do when visiting Tuscany. We did one at our farm stay, but there are plenty of places that offer wine tasting in the small Tuscan towns.
  • Civita di Bagnoregio , a unique and picturesque 7th century town on hill with incredible architecture. It’s famous for its pedestrian bridge which connects to Bagnoregio village.
  • Bagni San Filippo , a small hot spring with mineral rich pools and beautiful waterfalls.
  • Fosso Bianco hot springs , which are better for a swim and offers a chance to relax with mud masks
  • Visit Sienna for a day , a medieval city in Tuscany known for its historic buildings. Our favorite duomo of Italy, Siena Cathedral, is located here.
  • I also heard great things about San Gimignano , which is another medieval town known for its well-maintained watch towers.

Tours in Tuscany

  • From Florence: Day Trip Pisa, Siena & San Gimignano w/Lunch  (World Heritage + Wine)
  • Day tour of the wine region Chianti, and visit San Gimignano, and the medieval town of Siena !
  • Wine tasting experience in Montepulciano!  (said to be the best wine area in Tuscany)

We mostly ate at our farm stay, but we have a full post on some great restaurants in Tuscany .

Here are some of the places we liked the most:

  • La Vecchia Latteria in Siena was one of the best gelatos we had in Italy.
  • Caffè Fiorella in Siena has great coffee.

Read more: See the best places to visit in Tuscany and a road trip through Chianti.

I’ve mentioned it enough now to let you know we loved our Tuscan Farm Stay at Tenuta di Mensanello. I thnk an agritourismo stay is the best way to enjoy Tuscany.

You can read our full post with all the details on our agritouismo at Mensanello.

It had everything: rustic working farm experiences, gorgeous views, and their own wine, beer, olive oil, pasture-raised pork, and farm to table experience.

See rates and availability for Tuscan Farm Stay at Tenuta di Mensanello here.

Stop 3: Florence, Renaissance Splendor (2 Nights)

A short journey from Tuscany brings you to Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance.

The city is known for its art culture, and is where you can admire masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli at the Uffizi Gallery, as well as see the original Statue of David by Michaelangelo.

Don’t miss a chance to climb to the top of the Duomo for panoramic views of the city, and stroll across the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River.

Florence’s artistic legacy and architectural wonders will leave an indelible mark on your Italian sojourn.

Florence is packed with attractions, museums, art galleries and tours. Just wandering around is an adventure.

We were able to see and do a lot in our two days stay because we joined some walking tours for a highlight overview.

It saved us from getting overwhelmed as well! Click the links for more in-depth information and stories.

  • Boboli Gardens , is a historic park created for the Medici family, but was opened to the public in 1766. It’s a fine example of Renaissance landscaping.
  • Villa Bardini Gardens , another peaceful park with colorful flowers and Renaissance architecture. Don’t miss the views from the terraced bar!
  • Wander Oltrarno Neighborhood , a vibrant and quirky neighborhood full of boutiques, cafes and bars.
  • Tuscan Food and Wine Tour in Oltrarno . This is a great chance to find the best Florentine Steak in the city and learn about the regional cuisine of Florence.
  • Catch the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo or Ponte Vecchio . The Piazzale Michelangelo has sweeping views across the whole city, whereas the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval stone closed arch bridge, is lit up in hues of soft yellow and orange during golden hour.
  • Florence Guided Walking Tour , this is the best way to see the highlights and also allows you to skip the line to see The Statue of David and climb to the top of the Duomo.
  • Statue of David at Accademia Gallery, is a must-see for anyone visiting Florence, whether you’re an art lover or not. It’s one of the world’s most famous statues and is much more impressive in real-life than in pictures. You can see the outlines of muscles and veins, the attention to detail is extraordinary.
  • Uffizi Gallery is a must for art lovers and is where you can find original pieces from the Renaissance period’s greatest artists, including Raphael, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and more.
  • Piazza della Signoria is a bustling square outside Palazzo Vecchio and is a great spot to grab an espresso and do some people-watching.
  • Pitti Palace is a Renaissance palace that now contains an art museum.

Recommended Tours in Florence

  • Timed-entry ticket to David at the Accademia
  • 3-Hour Florence Highlights Walking Tour

  • Get your skip-the-line entry ticket to Uffizi Gallery

You’re always one corner around a great place to eat in Florence. Plus, it’s the home of gelato, so enjoy. As they say, When in Florence…. eat gelato every day.

And Florence is also the place to eat Florentine steak and visit a wine window.

  • Mercato Centrale for food market
  • La Carraia was the best gelato I had in Italy
  • La Terrazza Rooftop B ar (small and busy so get here early)
  • Caffè Gilli oldest cafe in city famous for espressos
  • Babae Wine Window
  • Ditta Artigianale Riva d’Arno has great coffee
  • Trattoria BBQ in Oltrarno has great Florentine steak
  • Ostaria dei Centopoveri – you’ll thank us for this local favorite – cheap with great food.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Palazzo dal Borgo in Florence which we booked using points. It had a great location, a separate room for the girls, and included breakfast. See rates and availability.

Stop 4: Cinque Terre, Coastal Paradise (3 nights)

From Florence, head to the ruggedly beautiful Cinque Terre region, which is a string of five seaside villages perched along the Italian Riviera.

Hike scenic trails with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, relax on tranquil pebble beaches, and savor freshly caught seafood.

The charm of Cinque Terre lies in its simplicity, where each village tells a unique story against a backdrop of cliffs and azure waters.

Cinque Terre is an ideal region to stay for three nights as it offers you a little more relaxation after a busy week in Italy.

So, take plenty of time to wander slowly. It was our girl’s favorite place we visited in Italy.

  • Hike the coastal Blue Trail between the 5 towns. Monterosso to Vernazza is said to be the most beautiful section.
  • Catch a sunset in Manarola
  • Take a boat tour of the Five Lands – the best thing we did and a great way to see the towns from a different perspective.
  • Relax on the beach in Monterosso , our favorite beach in Cinque Terre.
  • Kayak at Monterosso and admire the architecture from the water
  • Head to Riomaggiore for a vibrant and unique nightlife experience.
  • Try the local wine !

Recommended Tours of Cinque Terre

  • 4 Hour Speedboat Tour from La Spezia
  • 3 Hour Sunset Boat Tour Experience

We  stayed in an apartment in La Spezia  and caught the train in to the Five Towns.

I would have much preferred to stay in Monterosso al Mare  for two nights and using this as a base to get around.

From here, it’s easy to visit the other four towns either by hiking, by boat, or by train.

Riomaggiore is also a good place to stay with more accommodation options.

Below are some places we dined at during our visit to Cinque Terre and highly recommend.

  • Bar Gianni Franzi  in Vernazza – exellent lunch by the water
  • Nessun Dorma in Manarola has drinks, charcuterie boards, and views.
  • Buy the fried seafood cones – cheap and easy to go food!
  • Sorbetteria Gelateria 5 Terre in Manarola is 100% gluten free crepes and ice cream.

Stop 5: Verona, A Taste of Romance (2 Nights)

As you approach the end of your 14 day Italy journey, visit Verona, the city that was said to inspire the story of Romeo and Juliet.

Wander through well-preserved medieval streets, explore the Roman Arena, and visit Juliet’s balcony.

Verona’s romantic ambiance and cultural richness make it a perfect prelude to Venice.

Verona is one of my favorite places in Italy (I’ve been twice) and I prefer it to Venice, but you don’t need a lot of time here.

However, I think Verona is a great base as you can easily catch the train into Venice for the day, which is cheaper than staying in Venice itself.

  • Julite’s Courtyard and Balcony, the number one attraction in Veronia. You need tickets for the balcony, but it’s worth it. I loved it!
  • Verona Arena, a huge, well-preserved Roman Amphitheatre built in 30 AD.
  • Torre di Lamberti , an 84-meter-high tower built in 1172. This is a great place to see views of the city.
  • Castelvecchio Museum , set in a medieval castle known as a military base. It’s surprisingly good!
  • Roman Theater, not to be confused with Verona Arena, is a great place to catch a performance in the evenings.
  • Go for a bike ride around the city . This is a great way to admire the architecture and feel the beat of the city. Our bike rentals came with our apartment stay, but you can find bike-sharing rentals in Piazza Cittadella.
  • Giusti Gardens is a beautiful, manicured garden behind a palace. It was my favorite garden that we visited on our trip and is known for its hedge maze.
  • Piazza Bra, the largest piazza in Verona and is famous for its cafes, restaurants and bustling atmosphere.
  • Piazza delle Erbe , formerly the town’s forum in Roman Times, and now a peaceful square.

Recommended Tours of Verona

  • The Verona Card  (best way to save money. Includes Juliet’s Balcony, Lamberti tower, Castelvecchio, Roman theater, Verona Theater and more)
  • Arena di Verona Opera Ticket  the hottest ticket in town!
  • City Highlights Walking Tour of Verona  Best overview of the city’s history and culture.

Below are some of the places we ate at in Verona and loved!

  •  Bim Bum Bam Cafe/ Bar in Veronetta neighborhood for cheap Apertivo
  • La Costa in Bra had delicious and affordable pizza with views of the Verona Arena
  • Cafe Filippini on Piazza Erba – great gluten free carbonara and tiramisu

We were meant to stay at The Hotel Milan and Spa, but it does not have a 4-person room so we were placed in their sister apartment rental property The Verona House, which was excellent, and we could still use the amenities at the Hotel Milan & Spa.

We chose it because of the extraordinary views of the Verona Arena from their exclusive Terrace Sky Lounge and Bar.

Obviously, with views like this, you know the hotel is centrally located to all the action. See rates and availability here for Hotel Milan & Spa and click here for rates and availability here for Verona House.

Stop 6: Venice, The Grand Finale (2 Nights)

Finally, arrive in the enchanting city of Venice , where winding canals and historic architecture create a magical atmosphere.

It’s known as the sinking city, since the whole city is built on stilts over the water and is slowly sinking each year.

Venice is a walkable city and is best seen on foot, but you can also cruise along the Grand Canal in a gondola, which is an iconic thing to do in Venice.

Be sure to explore St. Mark’s Square and get lost in the narrow alleys of this water-bound city.

Venice, with its timeless beauty, concludes your two-week odyssey through the splendors of Italy.

  • Visit the Doge’s Palace , a Venetian Gothic palace that was once the residence of the Doge of Venice and a government office. It was one of my favorite attractions in Venice, but make sure you get the first tour of the day.
  • Bridge of Sighs , also part of the Doge’s Palace tour, is a beautiful bridge that connects the palace to the prisons.
  • Rialto Bridge , the oldest bridge on the Grand Canal and the most beautiful, as well as the Rialto Bridge Market for souvenir shopping.
  • St. Mark’s Basilica , the cathedral church of the Patriarchate of Venice and the most beautiful. Be sure to admire the plethora of golden mosaics that adorn its walls.
  • Acqua Alta bookstore , a hidden gem in Venice that’s not so hidden anymore. Each room is stuffed with books, and it has a garden with a book staircase that you can climb (great for Insta pictures!)
  • Walking Tour, St. Mark’s Basilica & Gondola Ride , this is a great way to spend a day in Venice learning about its history and seeing the main sides.
  • Admire the view from Accademia Bridge , one of the four bridges on the Grand Canal. From here, you get a wonderful view overlooking the Rialto Bridge and the canal.
  • Explore Dorsoduro district . Venice’s student district, for indie shops, urban eateries, and vintage fashion boutiques.
  • Take a day trip to Murano and Burano to see how Venetian glass is made.

  • Venice at Sunset: Cicchetti, Food & Wine Tour

Below are some places we dined at in Venice and would highly recommend.

  • Choclate tasting at Vizio Virtue Cioccolateria
  • Suso gelato – our last gelato in Italy was a good one!
  • Al Vapiretto Trattoria , that served delicious pasta and pizza at a reasonable price.
  • Da Fede on the Campo Margherita in Dorsoduro. Delicious last Italina meal!
  • Bacaro Risorto Castello for great cicchetti – a must to eat in Venice.
  • Harry’s Bar which created the Bellini

As mentioned, we stayed in Verona and traveld to Venice for the day. If staying in Venice, here are a few Venice hotels to consider:

  • Ca’di Dio-Small Luxury Hotel : top reviews for location, design and service
  • Hotel Belle Arti : Guests like the location and value for money
  • Hotel Moresco : Guests love the Venitan styling, service and location.

Getting around Italy is simple. You can either hire a car or get around by train.

You won’t need a car for most of the destinations on our itinerary – really only Tuscany.

After adding up the cost of train travel (for four of us) versus car (plus taking into account convenience and saving time) we decided to rent a car in Rome and dropped it off upon arrival in Verona.

Then we used it to travel between destinations.

The big issue was getting from Cinque Terre to Verona – it would have taken up an entire day by train, as you had to backtrack to Milan first to get a connecting train to Verona.

We had free parking in Cinque Terre, so only had to pay extra for parking in Florence.

Trains are pretty good in Italy, so this may be a preferable option, especially if you have more time.

We did encounter traffic between Florence and Cinque Terre, but it did not delay us too much. We caught at rain from Verona to Venice which was effortless and cheap.

In Summary: Italy Two Week Tour

That was our magical two-week tour of Italy, and as you can see, there’s a lot of great places to visit in this itinerary.

I wish we had longer, there is so much in this area to see and do.

If you have more time, you could consider adding Lake Garda and Lake Como which are also in this region and could be an excellent addition to your Italy itinerary if you have more time.

You could also explore the South of Italy, and add Naples or Sorrento to visit Pompeii, but I would skip the Amalfi Coast since it’s way too touristy now – Positano is also very expensive, and we personally think Cinque Terre has more charm. But that’s just us!

So now you’re ready for an unforgettable journey through the landscapes of Northern Italy, where you can taste the flavors and absorb the history of Italy from Rome to Venice.

This itinerary has the perfect blend of ancient wonders, artistic masterpieces, and the natural beauty that defines this captivating country. Buon viaggio!

Are you picturing images of Roman ruins, vast stretches of vineyards, and scenes of gondoliers singing “O sole mio” through the winding canals of the floating city? Then you’re conjuring up images of Italy! If […]
