When searching for a train from New York to Boston, a Saver ticket was $39 compared to a Value ticket at $69. That’s quite a savings if you’re confident your journey will go as scheduled.

Joining Amtrak Guest Rewards won’t give you instant savings, but if you travel regularly, it’s worth signing up for long-term gains. Membership is free, and every time you travel, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar spent to redeem against free tickets for regular services, Auto Train, Acela, and sleeper services.

Frequent travelers can work their way up the membership tier statuses to receive further benefits, such as bonus point earnings, complimentary class upgrades, and companion coupons . Members can earn tier-qualifying points in a calendar year through Amtrak travel or using the Amtrak Guest Rewards ® Preferred Mastercard ® .

Amtrak Guest Rewards bonus points are also earned through business class and first class bookings on regular and Acela services.

Don’t wait until you get to the station to book your ticket, as Amtrak says the best rates can be found online. It’s also a good idea to avoid purchasing a ticket on board , as only the more expensive flexible fares are available. The best available rates can be booked at Amtrak.com or via the app , and you also can make changes to your reservation online, view your e-tickets, and avoid long queues at the station.

Register for promotional emails from Amtrak to hear about flash sales and exclusive Amtrak Guest Rewards offers. Amtrak will also occasionally send targeted emails to Guest Rewards members. For instance, the rail company recently sent an email to register for the Amtrak Select Tier Challenge , which will give those targeted Select status through February 2025 after completing qualifying trips.

Amtrak’s new Night Owl program will reward travelers traveling at off-peak times with extraordinarily cheap tickets. 

Tickets can be as low as $5 each way , depending on your route. It’s only available for the  Northeast Corridor between New York’s Penn Station and Washington D.C.’s Union Station and for departures between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Passengers looking to embark on an Amtrak adventure through the U.S. can purchase a rail pass that includes a set number of segments that must be completed during a set number of days. You still need to book your seats along the way, and the duration starts from the departure date of your first segment.

USA Rail Passes

Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass is for 10 segments over 30 days. The pass is valid for 120 days after purchase (30 days after the first segment is traveled) and for coach travel only.

To see how much you could save with a rail pass, we priced an 8-segment journey with the California Zephyr from Chicago to the San Francisco Bay area and returning via the Southwest Chief from Los Angeles to Chicago.

With this particular route, a rail pass saved over $100 compared to purchasing separate Saver fares for each segment. If you were booking within 14 days of the departure, Saver fares wouldn’t be available, and the lowest ticket would be a Value fare with savings of over $240 .

We searched for travel dates 3 months in advance, so bear in mind that the closer to the departure date, the greater your savings would be using a rail pass , as ticket prices increase for individually purchased fares.

California Rail Pass

If you’re only looking to explore California, there’s a dedicated rail pass that is valid on Capitol Corridor , San Joaquins , Pacific Surfliner corridor trains, and Coast Starlight between Los Angeles and Dunsmuir. The pass is also valid on most connecting Thruway bus services that operate along these routes.

The pass costs $159 for adults and $79.50 for children. It allows travel on any 7 days during a consecutive 21-day period.

Booking a multi-ride ticket can save you money if you know you’ll need to travel the same route over a specific duration. Students may book a 6-ride pass valid within 365 days , and all passengers may book a 10-ride pass valid for 45 or 90 days, depending on the route.

We checked out the price of a 10-ride ticket between Los Angeles and San Francisco and compared the cost of purchasing 10 separate tickets.

Purchasing a 10-ride ticket would save $58 (almost the price of 1 ticket) compared to buying these tickets separately, so a multi-pass would save you money if you are confident you’ll make the journey enough times within the required duration.

Railserve.com updates its page monthly to reflect new and ongoing promo codes valid for different regions within Amtrak’s route network.

If traveling long distances or overnight, you might want to upgrade to a bed to get some shut-eye along the way. If you’re traveling with another person, booking a sleeper car would be much more cost-effective than traveling alone. Meals are also included when booking a sleeper car.

Omio is an official partner of Amtrak that sells tickets without the need to go directly to the Amtrak website. Omio displays the same rates you would find on Amtrak.com , but Omio doesn’t permit passengers to purchase sleeper cabins.

Capitol corridor trains generally do not require an advance reservation, so it’s easy to just buy a ticket and ride., types of tickets, single ride/multi-city ticket.

10-Ride Ticket

Monthly ticket, c onnecting bus tickets.

Capitol Corridor’s service area is extended greatly through a number of dedicated, connecting bus routes to destinations such as San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and Monterey. If your trip involves a bus connection, your ticket will include the route’s designated bus segment, as well as the rail segment. If you are beginning your trip on a bus without a ticket, you will be required to temporarily surrender your photo ID to the bus driver.

Please note that unless you are traveling between Emeryville and San Francisco, most connecting bus trips require an advance reservation.

Ways to Purchase Tickets

Capitol corridor tickets can be purchased in the following ways:.

• Online from the Capitol Corridor or Amtrak websites,
• from the Amtrak mobile app,
• from a station ticket agent,
• from a station self-service kiosk (Ticket Kiosk), or
• from a conductor on board the train (one-way only; surcharge added unless boarding station is unstaffed.)

Tickets purchased online, from a station ticket agent or at a self-service Ticket Kiosk machine, are issued as electronic tickets, or eTickets. If you book your ticket online, you will receive an email receipt with your eTicket attached as a PDF that can then be printed out or pulled up on your mobile device. If you purchase your ticket from a station agent or Ticket Kiosk machine, you will receive the ticket at the end of your transaction as a paper ticket; it will not be emailed to you. You can also buy your ticket and access it from the Amtrak mobile app. You must show your ticket (paper copy or pulled up on your mobile device) to the train conductor once seated or bus driver upon boarding. You may be asked to present a valid photo ID. Read more about ticket policies .

The only types of tickets that are not issued as eTickets are the following:

• Group tickets
• Tickets purchased on board the train
• Tickets purchased through a travel agency or corporate travel office

Capitol Corridor fares vary by origin-departure stations. You can view station-to-station train fares on  Capitol Corridor’s Fare Chart for One-Way/Round-Trip, 10-Ride, and Monthly tickets. Effective January 1, 2024, please refer to this updated Capitol Corridor Fare Chart . You can also check fares (including fares for trips with a bus segment) by typing in your origin and destination on the Capitol Corridor homepage, or by calling 1-877-9-RIDECC (1-877-974-3322).

Please note that the San Francisco Bay Area Clipper fare payment card is not available on the Capitol Corridor.

Buy one-way and round-trip tickets at staffed stations, online or at Ticket Kiosks.  If you’ve booked your reservation online, you can pick up and print out your tickets at a Ticket Kiosk. Reservations are not required for travel on Capitol Corridor, so you can walk up to a Ticket Kiosk and purchase your ticket right before you hop on board the train.

Amtrak's summer sale is here: The rail operator is offering up to 30% off coach and Acela business-class fares through August, with one-way coach fares starting at $14.

You must book by May 16 for travel from June 1 through Aug. 30.

Although this is advertised as a sale on one-way fares, you can stack two one-way fares for a round-trip journey. Based on a test search for this story, one-way sale fares were lower than marketed. For example, you can book an Acela from Washington, D.C., to New York June 10-13 for $126 round-trip; each one-way fare is on sale at $63.

Discounted fares will be noted with a green sale indicator at the top. You cannot make changes to tickets booked with a sale fare, and you'll be charged a 50% fee for canceling before departure.

Sale fares are available to book with Amtrak Guest Rewards points .

Amtrak's Latest Sale Has Tickets As Low As $20 — When to Book

Amtrak is ushering in the start of the warmer season by offering 30 percent off fares as part of its summer flash sale.

The rail company is putting coach and Acela business class seats on sale across the country when purchased by May 16 for travel from June 1 through Aug. 30, Amtrak shared with Travel + Leisure . The sale is available on the company’s “flex” fares.

“This Summer Travel Flash Sale provides customers with a unique opportunity to book an affordable trip now that can be enjoyed during the summer months,” Amtrak executive vice president and chief commercial officer Eliot Hamlisch said in a statement shared with T+L. “Whether you’re a current customer or joining us for the first time, Amtrak will make your journey far more convenient and relaxing than navigating through traffic on crowded highways and busy airports.”

There are no blackout dates during the sale, but it is not valid for travel on the Adirondack, Capitol Corridor, Empire Service, Ethan Allen, Keystone, Maple Leaf, Pacific Surfliner, or Pennsylvanian lines, or on markets between Washington, D.C. and Virginia. Amtrak said availability may be limited and may also not be available during busy travel times.

As part of the sale, tickets between Baltimore and Philadelphia start at just $21 each way — or as low as $53 each way in Acela business class — while tickets between Boston and New York start as low as $39 each way. 

On the West Coast, travel between Los Angeles and Sacramento starts as low as $60 each way, while travel between Portland and Seattle starts as low as $20 each way.

The sale comes as Amtrak is expanding service between St. Paul, MN, and Chicago this month with a new Borealis train, which will represent a second daily option to travel between the two major cities. It also comes as the company is planning on bringing back and expanding its popular seasonal Berkshire Flyer train between New York City and the Berkshires.

Last year, Amtrak changed its fare structure , introducing two new fare options of “value” and “flex” and eliminating the previous options of “saver,” “value,” and “flexible” fares.
