The dry seasons in Kenya are generally from June to October, and from December to March.

Game viewing is usually best during these dry season periods, and only a limited number of camps and lodges are open in the wettest months of November, April and May. However, weather patterns are unpredictable, especially in Kenya, and so it is very possible to experience rain at pretty much any time of year. December to March in particular is sometimes viewed as the season of ‘intermittent rains’. The coast also has its own micro-climate, generally being best from October to March.

Day time temperatures and humidity are affected by altitude but it is generally warm to hot throughout the year (averaging around 28C but slightly higher from October to March). Night time temperatures also vary considerably according to altitude, but aside from the Mount Kenya and Aberdare highlands, rarely fall to low single figures.

On the coast, temperatures are high year round (averaging around 30C). The best conditions are found from October to April when the Kaskazi wind blows gently from the north-east. This is also the most humid time. From May to September, when the Kuzi ‘monsoon’ wind blows more strongly from the south-east, sea conditions can be choppy and certain beaches affected by seaweed. During this time, snorkelling and diving options could be restricted.

The wildebeest and zebra migration season in the Masai Mara is from mid-July to late October. Please see our dedicated Great Migration page for more information.

The Best Times(Worst Time) to Visit Kenya 2024/2025 for Safari /Beach

Kenya will abolish visa requirements for global visitors starting in January 2024, guaranteeing a smooth and expedited entry process.

The best times to visit Kenya for a safari are from July to September or January to February during the country's dry seasons, however, these are also the most crowded travel times.

The best time for you to visit Kenya largely depends on what you want to see and your personal preferences. Read our article to find out the best times to visit Kenya based on different factors

Kenya Weather and Climate in Brief

Kenya is located on the equator and temperatures there are similar all year round , but it does have different climate zones: mild/warm in the highlands, warm/hot on the coast, and hot/scorching in the northern desert. There are major two seasons in the country: the rainy season and the dry season.

  • Dry season : January to February, July to September
  • Rainy seasons : October to December (short rainy season), March to May (long rainy season)
  • Wettest month : April
  • Hottest month : March, 21°C (70°F)

The Best Time to Visit Maasai Mara for the Great Migration

The best time to see the wildebeest migration in Maasai Mara is from July to September . During this period, you would see enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra in Maasai Mara. If you want to see the animals cross the Mara River, the best times are July and August.

This is also the dry season and, apart from the spectacle of the migration, you would have the best chance to see much more wildlife than usual as they gather around the water holes.

This is also the summer vacation season, so it is a great opportunity to see this impressive occasion with your family.

  • Weather : sunny and dry
  • Temperature : min: 10°C (50°F), max: 25°C (77°F)
  • Travel conditions : high travel season, most crowded, most expensive; good lodges and camps are hard to book.

The Best Times to Visit Kenya for Wildlife and Safari

The best times to go to Kenya for a safari are from June to October and January to February. These are the dry seasons. The weather is comfortable with sunny days and cool evenings. Animals are easy to spot as they gather around the water holes. As a bonus, there are fewer mosquitoes.

The period from January to February is relatively quieter compared to the migration period from July to September. Moreover, it is the optimal time to witness the presence of baby wildlife. Fortunately, in Maasai Mara and Amboseli National Reserves, you can encounter adorable baby elephants, lion cubs, baby zebra, and more.

  • Temperature : June to October: 10–25°C (50–77°F), January to February: 9–28°C (48–82°F)
  • Travel conditions : It's the high travel season, which is crowded and expensive. Lodges and camps are in huge demand.

However, the best time for weather does not always mean the best experience. The smart arrangement and flexible schedule even matter more . Contact us to tailor a tour that offers the best possible experience by carefully arranging and maintaining a flexible schedule.

The Best Time to Visit Mombasa for Beach in Kenya

The best time to go to Kenya's pristine coastline for a beach vacation is from October to early March due to the comfortable weather conditions. If you prefer water activities, such as diving and snorkeling, the best time for you to visit Kenya's beaches is in November. Kenya boasts some of the best beaches, including Diani Beach in Mombasa and Lamu Island.

  • Weather : Kenya's coast is humid all year round and rain could occur at any time, but it is pleasantly warm/hot.
  • Temperature : 24–30°C (75–86°F)
  • Travel conditions : high travel month

The Cheapest Times to Visit Kenya

The cheapest times to visit Kenya are during its rainy seasons . The short rainy season is from November to December and the long rainy season is from late March to May. March to May is definitely the cheapest time for a safari . But your travel experience may not be as good as hoped as the rain may interrupt your visit.

  • Weather : wet, cloudy
  • Animals : Animals are not easy to see as they tend to scatter around the park, but they may be very active.
  • Travel conditions : It's the low travel season, with cheaper prices and fewer crowds. Good discounts for lodges are easy to get.

The Worst Months to Visit Kenya

The worst time to go to Kenya for a safari and beach vacation is from late March to May, which is the long rainy season in Kenya. Kenya's beaches around the Indian Ocean coastline are very hot and wet with tropical storms.

  • Weather : Very wet — there are usually frequent storms and showers during this period
  • Road conditions : The paths in the parks could turn pretty muddy and some roads may not be accessible because of the floods.
  • Animals : You might also see fewer animals as they tend to spread out when it's wet rather than gathering around water holes.
  • Travel conditions : Some camps may close because of the bad road conditions. It is the cheapest time of the year to travel.

Benefits of Traveling during the Worst Months

However, the worst period is not too bad to travel, as the rain doesn't usually last all day and it often happens in the mornings or evenings. The sun also usually comes out quickly after a shower. There are some benefits to visiting Kenya aside from the weather.

  • Cheap prices : You could enjoy very reasonable prices. Safari lodges even offer discounted rates that are 30–50% lower than usual.
  • Very quiet : There are fewer travelers and you don't have to wait your turn to see the animals.
  • Animals are active : Some animals, such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hippos, are more active.

Don't let the weather stop your Kenya travel plans. If these months are your only opportunity, seize the chance ! A flexible itinerary and being accompanied by an experienced guide could truly elevate your experience. Let's customize a private trip exclusively for you .

The Rainy Seasons in Kenya

There are two rainy seasons in Kenya: the short rainy season from late October to December and the long rainy season from mid-March to May. The long rainy season sees a higher amount of rainfall than the short rainy season.

The short rainy season : This period has lower rainfall than the long rainy season and lasts from mid-March to May. You could expect brief but intense showers, usually in the afternoons or evenings. The sky is often overcast and temperatures are relatively cool. Due to the lower amount of rainfall, this season does not see much flooding, which the main rainy season does.

The long rainy season : This is the wettest period in Kenya. There are many heavy showers or downpours, which mainly occur in the evenings or at night. They usually last for about half an hour to an hour. The rain may cause floods and roads inside the wild animal reserves may become inaccessible.

Weather and Climate in Kenya

The temperature in Kenya is quite similar all year round . It has two types of seasons: rainy and dry seasons. It is dry with almost no rain in the dry seasons while the wet seasons are very humid.

The dry seasons typically occur from January to March and from July to October. During these periods, there is almost no rain. The weather is sunny, clear, and dry. The temperature is very comfortable. For example, Nairobi has average temperatures ranging between 20°C (68°F) and 28°C (82°F) during the day but is cooler at night at about 10°C (50°F) to 15°C (59°F).

The dry season is the best time for a safari trip in terms of the weather. It is also the busiest time to travel there.

Month-by-Month Guidance for Traveling in Kenya

Visiting kenya in january.

It is one of the high travel months in Kenya. It is the dry season. It is a great time to see wildlife in Maasai Mara and to get stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli National Park. The land is green after the short rainy season and the animals are very active. You can also have the chance to see newborn animal babies.

The weather is very comfortable. In Nairobi, it stays around 24°C (75°F) going down to 13°C (55°F) sometimes. Over at Maasai Mara, the temperature swings between 12°C and 30°C (54°F and 86°F) on average. And if you decide to visit the coastal towns and resorts around Mombasa, expect it to be warmer at about 32°C (90°F) in the afternoon.

It is a great time to go on a safari and go hiking, diving, and snorkeling. However, it becomes crowded during this month, especially around New Year when prices and visitor numbers are highest.

Visiting Kenya in February

February is one of the best seasons for safari trips. It is the dry season. The tracks inside the park are dry, making it easy to drive along. Animals in Samburu National Reserve and Maasai Mara are very active. You will spot elephants, zebras, and giraffes in the park in large numbers.

The weather is very comfortable and similar to that in January. February is also the best month for bird-watching.

Visiting Kenya in March

The rainy season arrives in this month. Animal-view this month is a bit challenging, but you can still do it. The rains may make the tracks through the park full of mud, making them inaccessible. It is challenging for game viewing as animals may be dispersed from water sources and the thick vegetation may make it harder to spot them. However, your skillful driver would know where to find them.

It is the low travel season. There are fewer travelers in the national parks and on wildlife safaris. You may have the chance to get a better view of the animals if you're well-guided. You can travel at a very competitive price. Hotels offer great discounts and airfares are much cheaper.

Visiting Kenya in April

April is the wettest month in Kenya. If April is the only time you can visit Kenya, don't hesitate. Just go for it! And if you are after a bargain trip, April could be a top pick. You can get a great discount on lodges this month and the airlines may also offer great discounts.

In April, you may expect storms and showers but the rain doesn't usually stick around for too long. It often comes in the evening or as a quick shower, so it probably won't mess up your safari plans for the next day.

Animals are not easy to spot but our experienced drivers and guides still know where to find them. And you will see many hippo calves in Maasai Mara this month.

Be aware that some camps may close this month and the coast is wet and hot.

Visiting Kenya in May

Most travel guides suggest that you don't go during this month because of the rainy season. However, it is not actually that bad.

It is true that it's the rainy season, but the rains often come in the late afternoon or at night and don't last long. Sometimes there are short showers.

The rain brings inconvenience to a game drive, but you can still do one with an experienced driver. The roads through the park may be muddy and certain routes may be blocked, but our drivers can often take a detour.

Visiting Amboseli National Park in May can be an amazing experience — you'll see cloudy skies and huge herds of elephants enjoying the lush green vegetation in the swamps. If you're heading to Maasai Mara, just make sure to pick a camp or lodge that stays open in all weather conditions. Some camps close during the wet season because some roads can get too tricky to travel on.

Visiting Kenya in June

June is a good time to travel with children as you do not need to worry about the heat from the sun and the humidity . The large numbers of travelers are yet to arrive so you will have a bit of time to see the sights with fewer travelers in the park.

The rainy season ends this month, although there are occasional showers. June marks the beginning of the high travel season. The weather is comfortable, being warm by day and cool at night in the highlands/savanna. Although dry, it may be cloudy on most days.

June is not a good time for a beach vacation and underwater activities as it is hot and wet on the coast.

Visiting Kenya in July

From July to September, Maasai Mara and other parts of Kenya have the most traveler numbers. The Great Migration of Wildebeest in Maasai Mara attracts large numbers of travelers from all over the world.

July is one of the best times to travel, both for a safari tour and a beach vacation in Kenya. The weather is dry with almost no rain (except for on Mount Kenya and in Hell's Gate). Animals are easier to spot as the vegetation is less dense. The weather is sunny on the coast, so it is a good season for underwater activities.

If you're worried about travel costs, July might not be the best fit for you. Accommodation can get pricier — sometimes even double compared to the low travel season. And finding a place to stay could be a challenge due to high demand. But, on the upside, the experiences you'll have in Kenya are surely worth it.

Visiting Kenya in August

The Great Migration of Wildebeest in Maasai Mara is in full swing this month. You will have the chance to witness countless wildebeest and zebras crossing the Mara River. The weather is warm in the day and dry. This is the best month to go weather-wise.

August is also the best month to watch humpback whales off the coast of Kenya, breaching the surface of the water and displaying their might.

But be warned of the high travel season. It is the most crowded month of the year. You might see rows of vehicles lining up by the river banks, all there to witness the awe-inspiring river crossings of wildebeest. But the incredible views are absolutely worth it.

Be aware that the exact timing of the animal river crossings can't be predicted. But don't worry! Choosing a skillful travel guide and driver can definitely boost your chances of catching this unforgettable sight.

Visiting Kenya in September

September is a good time for an exciting safari trip without many crowds. You may see the last wave of wildebeests cross the Mara River. As the vegetation has dried out, animals tend to cluster around the water holes in the parks. So, it is easy to see them and also a good photo opportunity as there is no grass or other vegetation blocking your view.

Although it is still the high season, there are fewer travelers than in August. The chance to see humpback whales off the coast is also high this month.

Visiting Kenya in October

The early part of October can still be an excellent time for game viewing: it's the dry season without many travelers. The weather changes from the dry season to the wet season during this month. Rain usually arrives late in the month. You may still have the chance to see the migration out of Maasai Mara, depending on the weather.

Visiting Kenya in November

November is the shoulder season in Kenya. It is the short rainy season, which means that you may have short periods of rain or occasional showers during this period. The grassland is beautiful with lots of greenery and the sky is clear. If you are not worried about the haze and pollen in the air, this is a good time to go.

The animals may not be in large herds and are more dispersed across the parks, but tourist numbers are moderate.

Visiting Kenya in December

The rain in December should not affect your safari too much as it often falls in the afternoon and rarely lasts long. This is the shoulder travel season so you may enjoy a very reasonable travel price (but not as good as the low season from March to May). There are not as many travelers so you may find some beautiful quiet areas, where you can enjoy watching a cheetah or a herd of elephants all to yourself.

Although it gets busier in the latter part of the month, as the Christmas holidays come along, it is still much quieter than in the high travel season from July to October.

It's also a fantastic time of year to take a wildlife safari into any of the many national parks. In Samburu National Reserve, for example, you'll see zebras, giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, and all manner of African animals. Amboseli National Park has stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and December is one of the best times to visit because the lack of haze affords better views of the giant mountain.

The best time to go on safari in kenya: quick reference.

In my experience, the best times to go on safari in Kenya are the two "shoulder seasons" in June and later in September-October.

June is perhaps my overall favourite month. Everything is green after the rains, it's nice and cool with far fewer tourists than the July peak season, and the first migrant wildebeest might start to arrive from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara .

Likewise, during September-October the crowds are starting to thin out, the migrating herds should hang around until about the middle of the month and there are good opportunities to watch them cross the Mara River. Wildlife viewing in all the other parks is also excellent and on the coast the sea is calm and perfect for snorkelling and diving. Temperatures are idyllic.

On the other hand, the worst month for safari in Kenya is probably April: the height of the wet season, with many camps closed and roads washed away.

Overall best months: June & September-October

High season: July-September & Christmas-February

Low season: March-April & November

Best weather: February & September

Worst weather: April

January & February

This is a hot and dry period. Animals gather around water holes and river banks which makes for a good period to be on safari. Many migratory birds are present. On Kenya’s coast, water clarity is at its best between January and February. A busy time for tourism, especially the start of January.

The start of the long rainy season and generally a bad time to go on safari. But, with few other visitors and lower prices if the rains are late arriving then this can be a good period.

The height of the wet season. Many safari camps close and roads can be washed away in flash floods. A bad time to be in Kenya.

The first part of May is similar to April, but by the tail end of the month things should be starting to dry out. The landscape will be lovely and green and although the safari camps will be starting to re-open, prices remain low. If you’re lucky with the weather then late May can be a lovely time to visit.

A superb time to be in Kenya. Everything is nice and green, the high season crowds are yet to arrive, the temperatures are pleasantly warm (but note that it can be miserable on the coast) and the wildebeest will be starting to mass on the Kenya-Tanzania border which makes for some exciting river crossing spectacles.

Although best known for the wildebeest migration, June is also the beginning of the humpback whale migration. Head to the Watamu Marine National Park to see whales — and dolphins — on boat tours between June and August.

Generally dry throughout the country with spectacular wildlife viewing in the parks and reserves. Wildebeest flood the plains of the Mara. The coast is now hot and dry. But this is also a busy and expensive time to visit.

August & September

A repeat of July, but by September there is a slight tail off in visitor numbers as school holidays end.

A superb time to visit. The wildebeest should hang around until about the middle of the month and there are good opportunities to watch them cross the Mara River. Wildlife viewing in all the other parks is also excellent and on the coast the sea is calm and perfect for snorkelling and diving. Temperatures are idyllic.

Safari prices start to drop as tourists head home and the short rains fall. Even so, this isn’t a bad time to be in the country as the rains are rarely strong enough to totally disrupt your travels. Migratory birds start to arrive.

The country is nice and green after the short rains and there are birds everywhere. The Christmas period is a busy tourist season but if you can come before that then you’ll benefit from lower prices and a tranquil safari.

Kenya climate by region

There are two things that define Kenyan weather: altitude and the monsoons. With the equator running straight through the middle of Kenya you might expect the country to be relentlessly hot. But it’s not as simple as that. Kenya is rippled in high mountains and plateaus and so altitude plays an immensely important role in Kenyan weather patterns.

In fact, it’s possible to stand in searing 40 degree heat in the northern deserts and snap a photograph of the snow and ice covering the summit of Mt Kenya!

The coastal strip is low-lying and has a hot and humid tropical climate year round (although things do cool down quite considerably between June-August). The vast northern deserts and semi-deserts (where parks such as Samburu are located) are always hot – sometimes too hot for comfort. Rain is also rare throughout the north.

The central and western parts of the country are much cooler, wetter and greener and for this reason this is where the majority of Kenyans live. The climate in Nairobi and other highland areas is one of almost eternal spring, and nights can get quite chilly.

This area is home to the Laikipia area conservancies, the Aberdares National Park and Nairobi National park among others. In the far west of the country, around Lake Victoria, the altitude is a little lower and it can be hot and humid with frequent rainfall.

In between the low and high altitude extremes is the Rift Valley. Fairly low lying and prone to drought, this is where some of the most famous national parks and wildlife conservancies (such as Tsavo and Amboseli) are located. It can be very hot here in the middle of the day but cool enough to need a fleece at night. The Masai Mara National Reserve is a bit higher and wetter and while days in the Mara are often idyllic it can be damn right cold on an early morning safari.

Kenya’s rainfall and monsoons

Aside from temperature the big thing that will impact when you visit Kenya and where you go is the rainfall.

Kenya receives two monsoon rains a year. The long rainy season runs from around March to May and the short rainy season provides the wet stuff between about late-October and mid-December.

During the long rainy season you can expect rain throughout the country on a near daily basis. Rivers can burst their banks and roads can get washed away. Most of the time the rain falls in the afternoon, but it sometimes rains all day. Nairobi can have what feels like endless days of grey, dreary drizzle. Throughout the country, even when it’s not raining it can be very cloudy. In general this is not the best time to visit Kenya.

The short rains are less predictable and may fail to materialise at all. However, as with the long rains, the rain mostly falls in the afternoon and not always everyday. There can be pleasant sunny periods in between the rain showers.

With changing climatic patterns these monsoon periods have become much less defined and in recent years there have been droughts when it should have been raining and floods when it should be bone dry.

Even though it’s not technically a wet season, the period between June and September still sees regular rainfall over large parts of the country, in particular the highland areas, the west and the Masai Mara. Temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold and everything is lovely and green. On top of that this is also when the wildebeest migration rolls through the Masai Mara. Overall this is a great time to go on safari in Kenya.

The driest and hottest time of year is January to March. On the coast and at lower altitudes it can be overwhelmingly hot. At this time of year the vegetation in many areas is dry and sunburnt but it’s a good time to be on safari – especially in a park such as Samburu or Tsavo when animals are drawn to the remaining water sources.

One of the biggest surprises visitors to Kenya get is how chilly it can get on a safari, especially those at higher altitudes such as the Maasai Mara and Laikipia where nighttime temperatures can fall below 10C. Factor in the windchill when zipping along in an open jeep at dawn and the reality is that safari-goers can become quite cold. Pack layers and be prepared.

Green, ‘shoulder’ & peak seasons

When booking a Kenyan safari you’ll likely hear the terms green season, shoulder season and peak season bandied about. But what do they all mean?

Peak season means high tourism season (July-September/October and Christmas to late February). Naturally enough this corresponds with the best times to be in Kenya, but it also means lots of other tourists, booked out lodges and high prices.

Shoulder season (roughly late-May, June and October) is the in-between time of year. For reasons of weather or wildlife sightings, the shoulder season is considered not quite as good as high season but much better than low season. There are fewer tourists and lower prices than in high season. A little secret: the advantages of travelling to Kenya in the shoulder season outweigh the negatives, and this is perhaps the best time to travel here (except for on the coast, which can be unexpectedly cold and wet).

The term ‘green season’ was perhaps coined to make potential visitors think of lush green landscapes. In reality though it means low season and it covers the months of mid-March to early May and November to early December. Kenya will be looking beautifully green at this time, but that’s because it rains – and at times it rains a lot!

Many safari camps are closed and getting around can be hard. This is generally a bad time to visit Kenya. On the plus side there are few other visitors and safari prices are as low as they get. Northern parks such as Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba can actually be quite rewarding at this time.

Kenya generally observes a Christian calendar so major celebrations and holidays such as Christmas and Easter are observed countrywide. Muslim holidays such as Eid ul Fitr will be observed in most coastal and north eastern areas. Only the holy Islamic month of Ramadan will have an effect on your travels — during this time, you might find stores and hotels closed during daylight hours and at sunset for the breaking of the fast.

There are fewer music and cultural festivals than you might expect, but for a chilled out festival, try the Lamu Yoga Festival in February — five days of yoga in stress-free, car-free Shela, Lamu. Various styles of yoga are taught by instructors from all over the world and are combined with celebrations of Swahili culture such as sunset dhow cruises.

The Kenya Music Festival is held over ten days in August in Nairobi. It draws big name African and international acts.

The end of the year brings the Rusinga Cultural Festival — an extravaganza of colour, music, dance and sport to celebrate and preserve the culture of the AbaSuba people of Uganda and Kenya. Held on the last Thursday and Friday before Christmas on the islands of Rusinga, the celebrations address various social and cultural issues. The headlining event is the boat races in wooden canoes where both men and women row along the lake in clouds of song and dance — not to be missed!

When to go FAQs

Your questions, our expert answers, is february a good time to visit the masai mara, or would june-july be better what would be the differences.

February is a very good time for safari in the Masai Mara , but also very different to the experience in June and July.

It's hotter and drier in February and generally there are fewer other tourists. There will still be plenty of zebra and wildebeest around but these are the non-migrating resident herds, so they don't form the massive iconic herds that you might see on TV.

July is good because the migrant wildebeest are all normally in the Mara by then, but its also absolute peak high season so can be busy and expensive. June is perhaps my overall favourite month. Everything is green after the rains and it's nice and cool with far fewer tourists than July, but the first migrant wildebeest might start to arrive (it all depends on rains and the state of the grass).

In short, all three months are excellent but each is different so it might be best to go with whatever just suits your timings better.

I will be in Kenya in early March and am looking for a five day safari for wildlife photography and birdwatching. Where would you recommend for me noting it is the start of the rainy season?

Early March is still a bit early for the rainy season so you might just get the odd thunderstorm. If birds are your real interest and you only have five days then probably the easiest is to go down to the Masai Mara via the Rift Valley lakes of Naivasha and Elementia or Nakuru. This would give you a good range of avian habitats and species in a short space of time. Don't forget as well that Nairobi itself has some excellent birding in the various forests and parklands in and around the city. Plus of course, there's the superb Nairobi National Park where you will see a lot of wildlife and birds.

Kenya safari guide – where & when to go, and what to see

Kenya safaris rock! Kenya is one of East Africa’s premier safari destinations, with massive open savannah regions hosting a huge breadth and depth of African wildlife. Over 10% of the country is protected in some form or other, and national parks in Kenya rate as some of the best in the world. A safari in Kenya almost guarantees you a sighting of the big five African animals of lion , buffalo , elephant , rhino , and leopard . Alongside these big-hitters are hundreds of other species of African animals, and some of the world’s most diverse bird-life.

Straddling the equator, Kenya is dominated by the Rift Valley – a huge range of valleys strung along a 5,000 km crack in the earth’s crust that runs through East Africa. Within the Rift Valley are Africa’s highest peaks – in Kenya these are the volcanoes of Mount Kenya and Mount Elgon. East of the Rift Valley are the coastal plains, whilst the north of Kenya is made up of arid wastelands. The prime Kenya safari destinations are the Central Highlands and areas within the Rift Valley. The south of the country hosts the great migration of plains animals and their predators each year between June and November. In short, Kenya safaris are up there with the very best in terms of wildlife and scenery.

Self-drive safaris are an option in many national parks in Kenya, though to enjoy full access to the most remote (and tourist-free) areas you’ll need a 4WD car or jeep. If you fancy taking a tour or arranging your own guide and/or driver have a look at our list of safari tour companies in Kenya before arrival in the country.

Alongside safaris and wildlife spotting, a visit to Kenya allows you to easily extend your safari with a visit to a resort on the Indian Ocean coast, or with activities such as trekking, hiking, sailing or diving .

The Maasai are one of the few African tribes who have retained most of their traditions, lifestyle, and lore – along with their distinctive red robes. Many safari lodges and operators work with local Maasai on community projects. Experiencing some time in a Maasai village whilst in Kenya is a unique cultural experience that will help put your visit in context.

Big five spotting

Kenya Safaris 2

Big five spotting in Kenya is high on most visitor’s safari checklist, and with Kenya’s superb network of national park gems seeing Africa’s biggest beasts up close and personal is a realistic goal. Destinations rich in lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo are clustered in the south of the country, particularly Amboseli, Masai Mara and East and West Tsavo (for the Tsavo lions !) national parks.

Best time to safari in Kenya

The peak tourist season in Kenya is January and February when the weather is consistently warm and dry, with wildlife easy to spot in large concentrations. If you take a Kenya safari in peak season expect to be in company with crowds of tourists, and paying top dollar for your safari. If you’re specifically after catching sight of the annual great migration, June to October is the time to head to the Masai Mara National Park in southern Kenya.

The long rains hit Kenya through March, April and May, and the short rains from October to December. During the short rains, it generally rains only for short periods at a time, meaning your wildlife viewing will not be too disrupted. This is the time you can get some great deals on safari tours, or safari lodges if you’re travelling independently.

National parks in Kenya

With a stunning array of wildlife and more than 10% of the country given over to national parks and reserves, Kenya is undoubtedly one of the world’s best safari destinations. Whilst the world-famous Kenyan national parks such as Masai Mara and Amboseli National Parks can be uncomfortably heaving with tourists in January and February, Kenya has plenty of smaller, out of the way national parks that see only a trickle of visitors year-round. As such it’s well worth taking the time to consider whereabouts in Kenya to go on safari if you’re visiting during peak season.

The reserve is famous for the abundance of predators – particularly big cats – and the great wildebeest migration to feed these predators, as well as the Maasai people themselves.

A first-timer's guide to planning a safari in kenya.

Experts share practical tips for preparing for a successful safari.

A First-Timer's Guide to Planning a Safari in Kenya

Before you begin your once-in-a-lifetime African adventure, make sure you talk to your physician about recommended travel vaccines and pack strategically with plenty of layers.

You've been dreaming about going on safari in Kenya ever since the credits rolled in "Out of Africa," and now you're ready to embark on the trip of your dreams . To make sure you get the most out of the country's spectacular wildlife and jaw-dropping landscapes, here is the information you'll need, so that the only surprises you'll encounter are ones that you'll love.

An Average Day on Safari

While every accommodation is unique, most camps follow a similar schedule. Led by a wildlife guide, you'll go on at least two game drives per day with other guests for three to four hours per ride. Along the way, you'll stop at picturesque locations to stretch your legs, grab a snack and revel in incredible scenery. In the middle of the day, when predators and other species are hiding in the shade, you'll be in camp relaxing. Expect to take your meals at camp, though dining in the wild is also common. At night, you'll cozy up to a warm fire and mingle with the other guests to share your day's adventures before letting the sounds of the bush serenade you to sleep.

Activities and Extra Costs

Game drives are the crux of most safaris, but there are plenty of other activities for you to enjoy, from guided walks and visits to tribal villages to hot air balloon rides over the Masai Mara or camel safaris in the Northern Frontier. Some activities are included in your daily rate, but "it's always a good idea to know ahead of time what's included in your stay, as many options may come with an additional price tag," says Linda Friedman, CEO of Custom Safaris. Also, keep in mind that you may be charged for park entry fees, laundry, premium liquors and other amenities.

Wildlife-Viewing Opportunities

"Kenya is known not only for its massive concentrations of game but also for its vast open plains. You can spot and track wildlife from a fair distance and there is almost always something to see and some sort of interaction between species," says Andrew Beck, a professional wildlife photographer and a co-founder of Wild Eye, a photographic safari company. There are also certain areas that contain larger concentrations of specific species. If you love elephants, consider Amboseli where herds can reach 100 members or more. And from August to October, the Masai Mara plays host to millions of wildebeest during the Migration, while species like the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, reticulated giraffe and the gerenuk can only be found in the north.

Guides know all about animal behavior and the area in which your camp is located, as well as the location of recent sightings, dens and kills. Still, they can't make animals appear on cue, so stay open to what the day brings. In the bush, the world can change on a dime; with a little patience, you'll have the time of your life.

safari kenya saison

Family

Taking your child on safari can be one of the best ways to instill a lifelong love of wildlife and respect for the environment, and in the last few years, more companies are enticing families with larger tents or villas and special programs designed with families in mind. As Friedman points out, it's important to ask up front if children are allowed or if there is a minimum age requirement. If your child is very young, you may be required to reserve a private vehicle.

Photography

A DSLR camera and longer lenses are best for wildlife photography , but if that's not your objective, Beck suggests getting a point-and-shoot with the maximum optical zoom. "Don't even bother looking at the digital zoom feature as this is essentially a crop of the image," he says. It's also a smart idea to bring plenty of memory cards. There is nothing worse than having to delete images from your camera on the fly to make room for your next shot.

When it comes to the bush, safety at any lodging is top priority. Upon arrival, you'll be given all the dos and don'ts and it's important to follow directions. While safaris are safe, Friedman cautions, "These are wild animals, not kittens."

safari kenya saison

Preparing for Your Safari

Paperwork  You'll need a passport that is valid for at least six months prior to your arrival. Your passport must contain a minimum of two blank pages for stamps. You'll also need a $50 visa . You can apply for a visa online at Evisa.go.ke or you can wait until you arrive at the airport in Kenya.

Vaccinations

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are no mandatory vaccinations for travel to Kenya though you may be required to get a yellow fever shot if your travels take you through endemic zones prior to your arrival. The agency also advocates being up to date on immunizations for Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies and meningitis. Additionally, you may want to consider pills for malaria. Make sure to speak to your physician about your travel plans to determine what you need.

Pack enough light casual attire for a long weekend and take advantage of the same-day laundry service (weather permitting) that the majority of camps provide. It's chilly in the morning and evening, but hot in the afternoon, so dress in layers. A good sunscreen is also a must-have, in addition to a wide brim hat and a good pair of polarized sunglasses. And flip-flops are fine for the jeep, but also pack a pair of comfortable sneakers.

Small commuter planes are the main mode of transport into the bush and all the domestic carriers are sticklers about baggage restrictions. Bags must be soft, no longer than 26 inches and wheel-free, and the total luggage weight per person cannot exceed 15 kilograms (33 pounds), including your carry-on. If you go over the limit, your best-case scenario would be paying a fee, but in a worst-case scenario, you may have to buy a separate ticket for your baggage or wait until there is a plane with space available.

Money Matters

Kenya shillings is the local currency. You can pick up shillings at the airport upon arrival, but U.S. dollars are also widely accepted. Keep in mind, accommodations will accept major credit cards such as Visa or MasterCard (American Express is not as widely accepted) for amenities or gift shop purchases, but you should bring cash for gratuity as well as extras, such as cultural visits to local villages or souvenirs like handmade jewelry or other trinkets from local artisans.

Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary. Your guide should be at the top of your list, and according to Friedman, you should plan to pay $15-25 per person per day. If you have a large family, less per person is acceptable. If you want to distribute gratuity to all staff members, most camps have a staff box where guests can leave a gratuity of $5-10 per person per day. When in doubt, ask a manager for advice, Friedman says.

Everything You Need to Know About Planning a Safari

kenya safari giraffe manor

When Matt & I decided we wanted to do a safari this year, I literally didn’t know where to start.  We had no idea where in Africa we even wanted to go, how long we should go for, which airport to fly into, which camp to book, what time of year was best, etc etc. I spent hours and hours on research that ultimately left me even more confused. We ended up choosing a safari in Kenya, and it was one of the most memorable experiences we’ve ever had.

Below is a guide that will help you make sense of everything beforehand. It’s something I wish I had when we were planning ours!

HOW TO APPLY FOR A KENYA VISA

US citizens will need to get a Kenyan visa prior to visiting, and  you can apply online without having to visit a consulate. Be sure to have a copy of your hotel confirmation and flight info ready, as you’ll need to attach the documents to the online e-visa form. The cost (including a processing fee) is $51 per person.

We checked in on our applications about two weeks later and saw that our visas were approved. You don’t receive anything physical in the mail, so be sure to print out the receipt and confirmation of your approval and have it with you at the airport. We didn’t realize we’d need a print-out, so when immigration asked for it, we were scrambling to pull it up on our phones.

It’s also possible to apply for a visa at the airport when you arrive in Nairobi (and the cost is only $21) but most people prefer to avoid the headache by doing it in advance.

masai mara kenya safari

QUICK TIP:  Apply for your visa online—it’ll save you the hassle of having to do it at the airport.

Vaccinations for kenya.

One of the most confusing aspects of preparing for the trip was vaccinations. We needed the yellow fever vaccine—but only because we were heading to the Seychelles after Kenya, and the Seychelles requires it for visitors coming from Kenya. We also got malaria pills, antibiotics (to have on hand in case we got sick during Safari), and shots for Hepatitis A&B.  Passport Health  is a fantastic resource for travel immunization information—the site breaks down every vaccination that’s needed for each country, and can even assist with booking appointments in your area. Best of all, they’ll create an itemized print-out for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Quick Tip: Confused about vaccinations?  Passport Health makes the process seamless.

OVERNIGHT IN NAIROBI + GIRAFFE MANOR

Depending on when you arrive, you’ll typically fly into Nairobi and spend the night before heading to your destination first thing the next morning.

Close to the city center and not far from Nairobi airport is  Fairmont Norfolk , a historic British colonial hotel that feels like a journey to a bygone era. The accommodations are perfect—rooms are centered around a quaint courtyard, there are Le Labo amenities, and a phenomenal morning breakfast spread. At the bar, musicians play live music, while locals and businesspeople have wine, cocktails, and (surprisingly delicious) tapas. We stayed here and we loved it—plus, they stored our bags for us so we didn’t have to worry about baggage weight requirements for the safari (more on that below.)

giraffe manor nairbobi kenya

If you choose to spend extra time in Nairobi, I would also recommend checking out  Hemingways— or you might consider extending your stay at  Instagram favorite Giraffe Manor . It’s definitely pricey… rooms at Giraffe Manor typically start at $620 per person, per day (all inclusive) and they’re usually booked out more than six months in advance, but if you have the budget and want a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, I would absolutely recommend it. Personally I don’t think you need more than one night; two at the most. You can check out their rate sheet here for more details.

Full disclosure: We didn’t plan far enough in advance to book a night, so I emailed them to ask if we could just come by for a meal—I offered to post on my IG feed, pay full price, etc.—and they still said no. Apparently it’s against their policy to allow non-guests onto the property. However, after a lot of begging, they agreed to let us come for tea, but only because I was able to cover their other properties in a magazine. All of this is to say…if you *really* want to go, you’ll have to book a room. It’s an annoying policy, but I get it—it’s their way of preserving the intimacy of the experience for guests that are paying a lot of money to stay there.

TRANSFERRING TO YOUR FLIGHT

After your overnight, you’ll be transferred to Wilson Airport, a smaller, regional airport where most of the safari flights depart from. Bear in mind that the planes are small, so you’ll likely be told to bring only one duffel bag per person that weighs no more than 15 pounds. (Most camps and luxury lodges provide daily laundry service, which helps when you’re forced to pack minimally.) Flight times vary depending on where you’re headed and how many drop-offs the plane makes, but they can be anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour.  In my experience, the 15lb rule wasn’t strictly enforced, but it’s probably not worth taking your chances. (More on this under “FAQ’s”.)

CHOOSING A CAMP + COST

One of the most difficult aspects of planning a safari is choosing which camp to stay at. They truly run the gamut—from posh five-star lodges to rugged tented retreats.  In general, properties fall into two categories: lodge-style and tent-style. There are some pretty incredible and luxurious tented camps (& Beyond and Angama are two of the best) but I knew I was more of a lodge person.

I’d heard incredible things about  Sanctuary Retreats Olonana , which is where we chose to stay, and it truly exceeded expectations. Rates include everything—food, wine, tours, private guide, spa treatments, daily laundry and even gratuity. They start at $350/night per person and can go as high as $1,000/night per person depending on the time of year. It’s definitely pricey, but I really believe you get what you pay for. (They have full price list on their website here .)

The resort was completely redone in July so everything is brand new. Daily meals take place during specific times and there are set menus, but the property was totally willing to make adjustments according to your personal preferences.

Quick Tip: Decide whether you want a traditional “tented camp” experience, or if you’d be more comfortable in a lodge.

Rooms are stunning (see above – do you die?!) and have every amenity imaginable: Wifi, filtered water bottles, french press coffee, bathrobes, toiletries, and a minibar. The 14 suites are situated on the Mara River, so you’re able to see some pretty crazy things right outside of your window—we watched hippos splash around in the water from the comfort of our bed.

TYPICAL GAME DRIVE SCHEDULE

Upon arrival at the airstrip, we met our guide who would be with us throughout the trip, and did our first game drive for a few hours before sundown that day. The next morning, we went out from 7am – 10am, and then again from 4pm – 7pm. Since it tends to get extremely hot during the day, drives often take place in the morning and before sunset, but full-day drives are also an option for those who prefer it.

kenya safari in the masai mara

During our downtime, we rested, had leisurely lunches and cocktails, and visited a local school and Masai village nearby, which, to be honest, was possibly my favorite part of the entire trip. (You can learn more about the charity efforts that help  support local Masai communities here .) Of course, each camp is different, but the staff at Sanctuary Olonana worked with us to set up activities according to what we were interested in. They also took special requests, like having coffee carafes in the van for the morning drives, beer and wine in a cooler for sunset cocktails, and even a picnic lunch for our last day.

THE WILDLIFE

If you visit during The Great Migration (which descends upon the Mara in July and lasts until October), you can expect to see thousands upon thousands of zebra and wildebeest en route to the Serengeti. Lions, giraffes, hippopotamus, and impalas are also fairly common, while rhinoceros and cheetahs are decidedly more rare to spot. Our guide told us that although certain seasons are rainier others, there truly isn’t a  bad  time of year for a Kenyan safari.

cheetah spotting safari masai marai

Quick Tip: Ask your camp/hotel staff what other activities or special arrangements they can arrange beyond safari—like seeing a local school or visiting a nearby village.

What to bring with you for your game drive.

I had a tote packed for each ride with the following items:

  • Scarf (it can get cold and dusty)
  • Hairbrush (the wind really did a number on my hair & I obviously want to look FRESH for my pics)
  • Lipbalm/Chapstick
  • External battery & charging cord
  • Deet wipes (these came highly recommended – in a resealable pack. Only got bit once)
  • Bottle of water
  • Powder sunscreen (to reapply to my face; I hate putting liquid sunscreen on top of makeup)
  • Jacket (for early in the morning and after the sun went down)

Safari Preparation

SAFARI FAQ’s:

Q: do you recommend using a travel agent or tour operator.

A: 100%. There are so many moving parts and logistics (with flights, baggage rules, locations, etc) that it’s almost impossible to figure everything out on your own—throughout our safari, Matt & I kept saying “thank GOD we didn’t try to do this ourselves.” We used  Abercrombie & Kent,  a company that I’d worked with before through Town & Country . (They have a team that specializes in Africa, and Kenya more specifically.) They were incredible and answered all of our questions + came up with a loose itinerary within 24 hours of our call.

Q: Is the baggage weight requirement for real?

A: They  didn’t weigh our bags when we checked in, but that’s probably because we only had duffels with us—we left our other luggage at the hotel. Even if your hotel doesn’t offer it, t he airports have luggage storage facilities for your extra stuff. I know it seems impossible to keep it to 15 pounds, but it honestly wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be!

Q: How many days do you recommend?

A: My advice is to think long and hard about how many days you’ll actually need for your safari. I had initially assumed we’d want at least 5 days, but our travel agent insisted that 3-4 days would be plenty. She was right. What I didn’t realize is that while the game drives are incredible, they can also be extremely long, hot, and exhausting—we spent around 6-8 hours a day driving through the desert. Our experience was AMAZING, but by the last day of our trip, I felt like it had been the perfect amount of time.

Q: Would you recommend going on safari for a honeymoon?

A:  My answer is unequivocally yes. I have a lot of thoughts about honeymoons (you can check out my guide to honeymoon planning here ) but I do think a safari is one of the most surreal, once-in-a-lifetime experiences that is wildly cool to have as a newly married couple. My ONLY caveat is that you should pair the safari with a second, more relaxing destination. Going on safari isn’t what I would call leisurely—it requires waking up at 6am and long afternoons in the heat. In an ideal scenario, I’d suggest starting your honeymoon with a safari and ending with a relaxing beach destination. Popular combinations include Krueger National Park in South Africa + Cape Town + Winelands; Kenya + Seychelles; Tanzania + Mozambique; Sri Lanka + Maldives.

Hi Lindsay! Just wanted to say I enjoyed reading your blog post. And definitely learned a lot of useful advice for a Kenya safari as well as styling ideas for when I do go there. I’m definitely going to be referring to your post for when I plan and prepare for my own safari adventure. I can only hope to have the same memorable exciting experience as you! I heard there’s a lot of wildlife action and scenic views to see in Kenya as well as a cultural side as well. Did you get to explore the tribes in the area?

so glad to hear that!!

Hi Linsday,

Thank you for creating such a well designed article.

I would love to know how you would describe the Secluded Africa lodge experience in Kenya or South Africa. With a diverse focus on conservation, cultures and communities while simultaneously offering every accommodation type, it offers something for every traveler.

I do hope we have the chance to discuss.

Safe travels, Robyn

Hi- this is so helpful! Would love to go on safari, with of course the relaxing trip afterwards! Curious, and I’m sure things have changed some, but what is the ballpark price for this sort of vacation? I know we can’t do super luxurious, but definitely want nice. Truly clueless!

' src=

thanks for the great info – do you recommend simply using a newer I-phone for photos while on safari- or purchasing a DLR camera with an extended lens?

I think it totally depends how serious you are about photography! I personally would just do iPhone because I don’t have the patience to go through hundreds of photos shot on a camera, but i totally understand that other people might not mind!

SEASONS IN KENYA

Home » SEASONS IN KENYA

safari kenya saison

The start of the year is generally a good season to get on-board a safari if you’re looking to see the vast species Kenya has to offer.

Animals begin to disperse over huge areas in search of waterholes, following the short rain season in previous months. This means wildlife is easier to spot in the lesser vegetation, with watering holes highly frequented as they hunt for fresh grazing.

There will also be opportunities to encounter large elephant herds in the Kenya regions, with February being an excellent time to go bird viewing in the Maasai Mara and other areas across the country.

The high season offers hot   days   in   Kenya,   where   diversity   is   at   its   peak.   The   stand-alone   wildlife, history, beach and culture Kenya has to offer can be found in a range of our safari packages, to suit your interests and needs as well as your budget.

If you’re thinking of visiting during high season, be ready for magical experience, visiting an array of locations over 12 days. This will enable you to see every enchanting aspect Kenya has to offer, such as Amboseli National Park,Aberdare National Park, Ol Pejeta Conservancy ,Maasai Mara National Reserve & Kenyan coast just to mention a few. Prices vary depending on season you are visiting, but if you’re looking to book during peak season, expect to pay a bit more!

As the year continues into April and May, this is considered to be East Africa’s low season, as bursts of tropical rain become rather unpredictable for safari game viewing.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda receive their largest rainfall during these months, meaning the wet weather makes for poor wildlife viewing.

The rain does however mean bushes and nature are fresh and green, leaving beautiful scenery and an opportunity to spot a plethora of flora.

If you’re looking to go on a safari during the long rainy season, you will have the benefit of grabbing a low rate, as this is generally a time period with little tourists.

Don’t worry, as the rainy season doesn’t last long. June is right around the corner followed by months of dry, hot days and a variety of wildlife species gracing their natural habitat.

June, July, August and September are regarded as the peak season in Kenya, where you can expect to see the “Big Five” across locations such as Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Samburu, Maasai Mara, Tsavo, Meru, Laikipia, the Aberdares and Mt Kenya.

During your chosen safari you will have the opportunity to get up close to the Big Five in their natural habitat, including lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinos and leopards.

One of the most famous wildlife spectacular Kenya has to offer is the Wildebeest migration, where huge herds of wildebeest, gazelles and zebras, enter the Masai Mara from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Herds make regular swims across croc-filled rivers, creating a once in a lifetime opportunity to capture the true essence of Kenya’s wildlife.

Due to evolving climatic situations, it may be a little difficult to give specific time for the start of migration. However, the wildebeest will be active from mid-July, before they start their return journey to Tanzania around September and October.

As the peak season is the best time to get the full experience of Kenya’s culture, it is regarded as the busiest time for tourists to visit; therefore prices may be a little higher.

Once peak season is over, East Africa enters shoulder season from October to December.

Short rain starts to hit regions of Kenya and the national parks and game reserves regain their vegetation.

However, the rainfall doesn’t usually affect the quality of the safari and can often be a refreshing break from the high temperatures in previous peak seasons. This makes it an ideal habitat for migratory birds and new born animals.

With game viewing still excellent during this time of year, it is a good opportunity to grab excellent value safaris with rates dropping due to tourist numbers declining.

Start Planning Your Dream Safari Today. For your entire trip you’ll be chauffeured, hosted and entertained by an experienced guide, who will take you across the Kenyan beautiful landscapes.

We promise you undiluted experience from the time you arrive till departure.

Magical Kenya: Our 2022 itinerary for a perfect safari & beach holiday

(Advertisement | Press Trip)

Magical Kenya: A 2 week itinerary for a Kenya visit in 2022

(Last Updated, September 2023) . Kenya has cast a spell on us, and that’s why we already visited the country twice within just 2 years! In the beginning of 2021 we visited Kenya for the first time and fell head over heels for it’s splendid safaris, incredible lodges, unique wildlife and for the lovely people who welcomed us with open arms after the challenges of the pandemic. So, when the Kenya Tourism Board asked us if we would re-visit Kenya in 2022 , we immediately said YES!

This time we travelled to a few new regions within Kenya, but also re-visited the famous Maasai Mara (because you can never have enough of this safari wonderland). In this blogpost we will share the full 2 week itinerary and updated tips for a Kenya visit .

Magical Kenya 2022 safari & beach itinerary

This time we combined our safari with a beach holiday – and can highly recommend this!

Our two week itinerary in Kenya in 2022

This time we planned an itinerary that combines safari and beach holidays – which we believe is the perfect way to really enjoy the variety of Kenya ! Last year we missed out on the beaches, but little did we know how incredible the coastline of Kenya is. Here is the detailed itinerary of our 2 weeks in Kenya:

  • 1 night in Nairobi: Nairobi Tented Camp
  • 3 nights in the Maasai Mara: Emboo River Camp
  • 3 nights in the Maasai Mara: Olimba Mara Camp
  • 3 nights in Tsavo West: Kipalo Hills by Secluded Africa
  • 3 nights at Kuruwitu Beach, Vipingo: Cardamom House by Secluded Africa
  • 1 night in Nairobi: Nairobi Tented Camp

Magical Kenya 2022 safari & beach itinerary

Most first time Kenya visitors will focus on Nairobi and the Maasai Mara (and maybe adding Lake Nakuru on the way). For two week itineraries some operators also combine Kenya with Tanzania, but we think if you have more than one week it’s best to extend your Kenya trip and add either the Northern parts (Laikipia and Samburu)  or venture further to the East (Tsavo and the coastline).

In 2021 we decided to leave out the beach portion of the Kenya trip and went to the North instead , which is famous for it’s incredible conservancies and for cultural encounters with the Samburu and also worth a trip. This year we opted for the Eastern parts with the famous Tsavo National Park and it’s abundance of elephants as well as a few days at the beach.

In the end it depends on your preferences, if you’re into beach holidays go to the beautiful coastline, but if you prefer nature and safaris go to the North instead and visit Lewa or Samburu.

The Maasai Mara is always a staple when it comes to Safaris in Kenya and should not be missed!

Which regions to visit during a two week kenya roundtrip.

Just like the year before we spent two weeks in Kenya, but this time we travelled to these regions:

  • Nairobi (1 night):  We’re not huge city fans, so we decided to only spend one night in Nairobi, but stayed right inside the famous Nairobi National Park. There’s only one safari camp located right within the National Park called “Nairobi Tented Camp”, which is rustic, but offers a great gateway to a safari holiday in Kenya. This way your pick-up from the airport is already your first game drive! Other than that Nairobi has a lot to offer besides the National Park as well, if you’re opting for a longer stay.

Where to stay: Nairobi Tented Camp – a rustic tented camp inside the National Park

Read more about a stay at Nairobi Tented Camp inside Nairobi’s National Park here.

Nairobi National Park - home to Nairobi Tented Camp, the only camp inside the national Park in Kenya's capitol

  • Maasai Mara (6 nights):  We already learned that this is the crown jewel of Kenya’s safaris last year, so of course we couldn’t pass the Mara this time around. We stayed in two different camps to get to know new areas of the national reserve. The Maasai Mara is – next to the Serengeti on Tanzania’s side – the location of the great migration, when millions of wildebeests and zebras inhabit the large grassy plains. But we visited outside of the main season twice now and can give testament to it’s plentiful wildlife in the low season as well.

Where to stay: Emboo River Camp – the first 100% carbon neutral eco luxury camp in the Maasai Mara. Olimba Mara Camp – a brand-new camp for socially responsible travellers, that is co-owned by a Maasai.

Learn more about the Maasai Mara and the different areas and lodges here!

Eco luxury safari in Kenya's Maasai Mara with Emboo River Camp and their electric safari vehicles

  • Tsavo (3 nights): Together Tsavo East and Tsavo West form the largest National Park in Kenya – combined they have the size of Israel and are famous for the red soil and huge elephant populations. For us it was the first time in this part of Kenya and we had some of the most incredible wildlife encounters here – including seeing 3 leopards drinking at the water hole right next to our lodge during one dinner!

Where to stay: Kipalo Hills – a secluded barefoot luxury camp in it’s own private conservancy adjacent to Tsavo West and with access to Tsavo East

Read more about where to stay in Tsavo and why it’s worth a trip!

Tsavo West National Park and it's red soil

  • Kuruwitu / Vipingo (3 nights): The coastline of Kenya has a bit of a mixed reputation (ever heard of the infamous beach boys before?). You might want to avoid their efforts to score a relationship and therefore it’s crucial to choose the right spot. Kuruwitu has a private bay, that is inaccessible for the beach boys, that not everyone is seeking when going on beach holidays. So this is a bit of an insider tip and comes highly recommended! There’s only a handful of villas at the beach, most of them privately owned – so it doesn’t get better than that.

Where to stay: Cardamom House – a Swahili-style beach villa at a private stretch of beach in Kuruwitu, Vipingo

Find out more about Kenya’s beach paradise Kuruwitu here!

Sundowner on top of the tower suite of Cardamom House

  • Nairobi (1 night):  To finish our trip we stayed one more night in Nairobi again. This time we didn’t need to get a COVID test anymore to return to Austria, but we still enjoyed one last day in Nairobi National Park before the night flight back home. Another option would be to book yourself a more luxurious stay to end the trip, like The Emakoko or Hemingway’s!

What has changed since 2022 in Kenya?

A year after our first visit the most distinct difference is that  tourism is slowly returning after more than two years of battling with COVID-19 travel restrictions. In March 2022 Kenya lifted the test mandate , so for entering the country now you only need a full vaccination – PCR-tests are not required anymore. But please check the regulations before you travel again to make sure you cover any changes!

During our time in the Maasai Mara we also noticed that visitors are returning, the bush planes were full (as opposed to 2021, when we were alone in most of the camps) and at leopard sightings you could easily meet 20 other cars. Outside of the Maasai Mara it’s still rather “empty”. Many lodges have had a higher influx of local Kenyan tourists in the last months, but we were alone in the lodges in Tsavo and at the coast. The bookings for the next months are looking promising though as international travellers are returning now step by step.

One of the reasons why we chose Kenya in 2021 was that the government took COVID-19 really seriously and had put enough measures in place. In March 2022 COVID cases in Kenya were at an all time low, but there were still measures in place, which felt quite reassuring. Masks were still worn in public places, in the planes, there’s hand sanitising stations everywhere and our temperature was checked at several entry points to National Parks for example. Also all the staff members in the lodges and camps were fully vaccinated.

All in all life in Kenya is spent outside, which makes it a safe travel destination – even if COVID-19 isn’t gone yet.

More details about our first Kenya trip

If you’ve now got a taste for Kenya, we recommend you also check out all the locations from our first round trip through Kenya. In 2021 we also travelled around Kenya for 2 weeks with a bit of a different itinerary, focusing on the Maasai Mara and the Northern parts of Kenya with Lewa and Samburuland. Here are all the blogposts and tips from that trip:

  • Remote luxury safaris with an abundance of rhinos at the incredible Lewa House
  • From camels to helicopter rides and Samburu encounters –  the unique Ol Malo Lodge
  • Safaris in 1920’s style at the original Cottar’s
  • The ultimate in luxury in the Maasai Mara at andBeyond Bateleur Camp
And here’s our full 2 week Kenya itinerary from 2021.

You’ll need a passport that is valid for at least six months prior to your arrival. Your passport must contain a minimum of two blank pages for stamps. You’ll also need a $50 visa. You can apply for a visa online at Evisa.go.ke or you can wait until you arrive at the airport in Kenya.

Vaccinations

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are no mandatory vaccinations for Kenya Safari Tours though you may be required to get a yellow fever shot if your travels take you through endemic zones prior to your arrival.

It’s chilly in the morning and evening, but hot in the afternoon, so dress in layers.

Kenya shillings is the local currency. You can pick up shillings at the airport upon arrival, but U.S. dollars are also widely accepted. Keep in mind, accommodations will accept major credit cards such as Visa or MasterCard (American Express is not as widely accepted) for amenities or gift shop purchases, but you should bring cash for gratuity as well as extras, such as cultural visits to local villages or souvenirs like handmade jewellery or other trinkets from local artisans.

Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary. Your guide should be at the top of your list, and according to us, you should plan to pay $15-25 per person per day. If you have a large family, less per person is acceptable. If you want to distribute gratuity to all staff members, most camps have a staff box where guests can leave a gratuity of $5-10 per person per day. When in doubt, ask a manager for advice, Friedman says.

  • Kenya in December

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Matthys van Aswegen

Nairobi and the central highlands are hot by day, cool by night and receive a moderate to high amount of rain. Mombasa and the coast is very hot by day, rather hot at night, and might receive occasional rainfall.

whale shark kenya

The Rift Valley and western interior are hot by day, cool at night and receive occasional rain.

From December onwards the Tsavo sees an increase in humidity and although it can get rather intense, it’s still a good time to visit the coastal regions. The ocean breeze also helps to alleviate the heat and the warm water is a pleasure.

  • December isn’t the best time for beach holidays on the Kenyan coast, since it is quite wet and daytime temperatures can get very high. Game viewing in most safari destinations is good in December. Birdlife is boosted by a variety of intra-African and Palaearctic migrants.
  • For divers and snorkelers, December is a good month to see larger marine creatures such as whale shark, manta ray, and various sharks, dolphins and turtles.

6 Questions About 14-Day Kenya Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

safari kenya saison

Is 2 weeks a good amount of time for a Kenya trip?

“A 2-week safari in Kenya is a very special holiday. Two weeks gives you enough time to really immerse yourself in a safari and get into the rhythm of the bush. Although 14 days is a great amount of time for a safari, you’ll still have to make choices. There are lots of parks and reserves in Kenya and the key to a successful safari is to resist the temptation to cram too much into the itinerary. Aim to spend at least 2 to 3 nights in each destination. On days you’re not moving lodges, you’ll get to enjoy some rest and quality time in the lodge between game drives.”

Can I combine my safari with a beach holiday or a mountain climb in Kenya?

“While a safari might be your prime reason to visit Kenya, there are other things you can do here. The beautiful coastline is ideal for a beach holiday. Whether you’re looking for a child-friendly resort or an exclusive romantic getaway, Kenya has beach accommodation suitable for every occasion and budget. The reefs create a perfect snorkeling environment and there are great diving opportunities as well. If you’re looking for a more active add-on to your safari, consider climbing one of Africa’s tallest mountains. You need to visit neighboring Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The trek to the summit takes between 5 and 8 days. Alternatively try Mt Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain. Although less popular, the climb is considered more scenic and at least as challenging. ”

What are the options for a 14-day safari in Kenya?

“With so many different parks and reserves, there are many options for a 2-week safari in Kenya. And, with 14 days, you can mix and match to build your dream holiday. The wildebeest migration, one of the world’s great wildlife spectacles, happens in the Masai Mara National Reserve in September to October (depending on rainfall). Wildlife viewing is excellent throughout the year though, and big cats are common. Lake Nakuru National Park is often visited en route. This Rift Valley lake is a hot spot for rhinos, as well as big flocks of pelicans and seasonal flamingos. Elephant-lovers shouldn’t miss Amboseli National Park. There are few locations where you can get so close to these giants, many of which carry enormous tusks. Visit one of the Laikipia Big Five reserves at the base of Mt Kenya for exclusive luxury. Some of these reserves are very remote and can realistically only be visited on a fly-in safari. If you like to get off-the-beaten-track, head north to Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves. Aside from elephant, you’ll see several animals adapted to the arid environment of this dry-country region. Most notable perhaps is the gerenuk, a gazelle with a disproportionately long neck that allows it to reach leaves that other antelopes can’t. If you’re an adventurous traveler, consider a trip to Lake Turkana near the Ethiopian border. Wildlife is scarce in this area of desert, but the melting pot of vanishing traditional cultures makes a visit here truly special.”

What is the best time of the year for a trip in Kenya?

“The best time for wildlife viewing in Kenya is in the Dry season, from late June to October. Animals tend to spread out during the Wet season, but as the bush dries out, they congregate around rivers and waterholes. The thinning vegetation also helps to make animal spotting easier in the Dry season. I wouldn’t rule out traveling in the Wet season though. The wettest months, April and May, are perhaps best avoided as some of the roads become difficult to drive and some parks and reserves effectively close. However, November through to March is a beautiful time as everything is green and the sky is free of dust. And there are always animals around, even if you have to work a little bit harder to find them. As this is the low season, you might be able to get a good deal at this time. ”

Will I see the Big Five?

“You’ll be able to see a lot of different animals on a 2-week safari in Kenya, including most, if not all, of the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard). Lion, elephant and buffalo are quite easy to see in Kenya. You’ll find them in most parks and reserves. Leopard is present throughout the country, even outside of protected areas, but these secretive cats are often difficult to spot. You sometimes find them lazing in a tree in the middle of the day, but your best chance to encounter one is at dawn or dusk when they are most active. Not all Kenyan parks are home to rhino, Africa’s second-bulkiest mammal. You’ll see plenty, though, if you head to Laikipia or Lake Nakuru NP. While chasing the Big Five is fun, encountering a variety of animals is what counts. Seeing giraffes fighting, a cheetah with cubs, or a pride of lions stalking a zebra is what it is all about. The quality of your safari won’t depend on whether you’ve seen the Big Five or not.”

How much will a 14-day Kenya safari cost?

“You’ll find a wide range of prices for a 2-week safari in Kenya. You can use the filters on SafariBookings.com to narrow down your priorities, but here are some rough figures to give an idea of prices. Two-week mid-range lodge tours start at US$2800 per person. Shared budget tours start at US$2000 per person and Luxury tours start at around US$7000 per person. The overall price depends on several factors. The level of the lodging makes a big difference to the cost. There is a choice of budget, mid-range and luxury accommodation available at most parks and reserves. Note though that there are different kinds of luxury lodges. Some of them are very rustic. These ecolodges aim to leave a small footprint and blend into the environment. These are usually small and intimate, offering personalized service and great food. Other luxury lodges are more conventionally high end with all mod cons available. Mid-range lodges can be tented camps or no-frills hotels, while budget accommodation is more basic. Camping tours are usually the most budget-friendly, especially if you join a group tour. You can consider traveling out of season too. Not only is this a good way to reduce costs, it’s a beautiful time of the year and fewer visitors are around.”

ABOUT KENYA

A safari in Kenya is an intoxicating blend for those after a real adventure. Expect sensational wildlife and wilderness, as well as wildly stylish camps and bush homes, a huge range of activities and a high degree of flexibility and freedom.

The Kenyans practically invented the concept of safari; today’s best guides were yesterday’s barefoot bush-kids, so their knowledge is rooted in a muddy-kneed, dirt-on-hands level of personal experience. Consequently, the best safaris offer a relaxed authenticity that other countries struggle to match.

The country is blessed with some of Africa’s best wildlife as well as some of its most photogenic scenery, however in the past it struggled to shake off its reputation for nose-to-tail traffic jams of tour buses. So our focus is all about showing you the other side of this sensational country. Places like the Laikipia Plateau, the conservancies on the fringes of the Masai Mara or the Matthews Range where tourists are a rarity.

The Masai Mara is still one of the best game experiences you could hope to have. Aside from the undeniably spectacular prospect of seeing tens of thousands of wildebeest brave the crocodiles as they cross the Mara river en masse, the Mara has a huge variety of wildlife including lion, cheetah and leopard.

However, the Mara has seen a lot of development over the past 15 years, so you should choose carefully where to go. Community conservancies now provide an important buffer to the reserve itself and these are often the best places to find small, authentic camps in beautiful areas, far from the busier game routes.

Away from the Mara, stretching from the slopes of Mount Kenya to the rim of the Great Rift Valley, the Laikipia Plateau harbours an abundance of wildlife and a fine collection of eccentric lodgings. Days spent on Laikipia are a strikingly different experience to the rest of east or southern Africa. First and foremost it is made up of a patchwork of independent working ranches, rather than being a conventional National Park, and therefore the rules or, more likely, the lack of them, are down to your hosts.

The sense of liberation is palpable here. While in a National Park it may not be possible to walk, travel in an open vehicle, use a spotlight at night, ride a horse, bike or camel – it’s all possible here. Add to this the sensational wildlife, which includes the Big Five (there are eight separate rhino sanctuaries) and arguably the best place on the continent to track wild dog.

Top Reasons To Visit Kenya

Often the best safaris involve looking beyond the obvious highlights. It’s about the myriad exhilarating encounters that will make your heart sing. These are encounters that nobody could ever predict, but that make your safari genuinely unique.

safari kenya saison

Best Time To Visit Kenya

Wildlife spectacles abound in kenya’s dry season.

Like much of the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa the conventional wisdom applies to Kenya; to see most, travel in the long dry season between June and October.

This is when wildlife concentrates around remaining water sources becoming more plentiful and easier to see. The wildebeest migration usually arrives in the Masai Mara from the Serengeti and the Loita Hills in late July, bringing drama on an unprecedented scale as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest cross the Mara and Talek rivers, braving vast crocodiles.

If you want to head to Kenya’s coast during the dry safari season, your best bet is to visit between late July and October. March and April tend to be the hottest times, while the seasonal rains arrive between late April and early July with short rains in late October to November.

Beat the crowds during Kenya’s green season

Don’t ignore the green season between December and May – wildlife remains outstanding, there are few tourists and the bush turns a lush green, alive with the extravagant plumage and sounds of breeding birdlife.

Some areas like the Chyulu Hills are arguably at their best once the rains have come. Canny travellers can pick up a combination of low season rates and few other tourists by travelling in low and shoulder seasons.

It’s also a great time to head to the Kenyan coast for some rest and recuperation. The Kenyan coast offers white sandy beaches and turquoise waters to rival anywhere in Africa, so makes a great addition to any safari. It’s at its best between late November and March.

Kenya (FAQs) Need to Know

What is the best safari in kenya.

We believe the key to an epic safari in Kenya is getting away from the crowds. Kenya is one of the best wildlife viewing destinations in the world, so naturally tourists flock here. However, being among so many other people can seriously devalue the authenticity of your experience.

We champion the lesser-visited parts of the country, like the Laikipia Plateau, the conservancies on the fringes of the Masai Mara or the Matthews Range where tourists are a rarity.

To really get a tangible sense of freedom, we recommend visiting the Laikipia Plateau. Rather than being a conventional National Park, this area is made up of a collection of independent working ranches. This means less rules, and more possibilities for exploration. Staying in Laikipia often leaves the impression that you have visited friends – family hounds might join you on game-drives and a swim in the river might replace the more common-or-garden siesta.

Refreshingly in northern Kenya, man and wildlife do merge. While there are undoubtedly challenges, if there is a model whereby traditional pastoralists, commercial farmers and wildlife can all coexist, this is it.

How long should I spend on safari in Kenya?

This all depends on what you’d like to see and how many areas you’d like to visit. Ideally we’d recommend a minimum of seven to nine days in the game-rich areas. This gives you a good chance of encountering the animals you’re hoping to see and also the time to visit a few, very different, parts of Kenya.

It’s also important to factor in some recovery time. If this is your first time on safari, you may be surprised how long and tiring the days can be. Activities tend to start early in the morning as this is the coolest time of day. To make sure you don’t burnout, we always recommend having some downtime, perhaps even adding on a trip to Kenya’s idyllic coastline for some recuperation at the end of the trip.

Is Kenya a good family safari destination?

Not only is Kenya a great destination for first-time safari-goers, it’s also an exceptional location for families. Away from the lure of Xbox, YouTube and social media, children can reconnect with nature, immersed in the wilderness with nothing but incredible landscapes and fascinating wildlife.

There are so many experiences that will inspire young ones, and arguably more importantly, keep them entertained.

Take a camel safari in Laikipia alongside Samburu Guides, for example. On this safari, you’ll navigate across Laikipia’s wilderness in the company of expert guides and crew, walking or riding on camels as you make your way between the camps. Your children will also meet and live alongside semi-nomadic Samburu people, learning about their way of living which is so different to their own.

Great Wildebeest Migration

Home of the tailor-made safari holiday you've been dreaming about

Your bespoke Kenya safari holiday is all about abundant game viewing, jaw-dropping scenery and long sandy beaches.

A Kenya safari holiday really captures the spirit of East Africa, as well as the imaginations of all who venture to its vast savannahs, tropical shores and dramatic peaks. Widely regarded as being the home of the safari, Kenya boasts over fifty National Parks and Reserves, offering some of the most unique game viewing experiences on the planet. Combined with the seemingly never-ending Indian Ocean coastline, it’s easy to see why Kenya is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Africa.

Safari Wildlife

Kenya’s Parks and Reserves are ranked amongst the best in the world, playing host to iconic and endangered species including the Big Five. Kenya unquestionably offers unrivalled wildlife viewing.

The Masai Mara is of course the most famous park in Kenya thanks to the vast amount of wildlife it supports. If you're looking for the chance to see Big Cats, or the Great Migration, then this is the place to be. The Great Migration happens between July and October, when torrents of wildebeest and zebra flood the savannahs of the Masai Mara, because the grass is always greener! These herbivores are of course followed by plenty of predators looking for an easy meal so it is also a brilliant time of year to see big cats and perhaps even a chase.

If it’s elephants you’re after, head to Amboseli or Tsavo, for rhino Lewa and for unusual endemic wildlife, Samburu is the place to be. Meanwhile bird-watchers should check out the Great Rift Valley, with its shimmering pink flamingo-filled lagoons and over 450 other bird species to look out for.

For the ultimate Kenya safari experience, we would recommend coming two or more safari areas so that you can experience the countrys diverse landscape and a spot a true variety of safari animals.

Safari activities

As well as classic game drives and bush walks which are a real treat for the sense, Kenya safaris are all about doing something a little different such as hot air ballooning over the Masai Mara , camel trekking across the Laikipia Plateau,horse-riding in Lewa or spending the night fly camping beneath the twinkling stars.

Kenya culture

Kenya is also known for its tribal diversity, and it’s likely your safari guide will a warrior or tribe member from the community. Visits to villages can be arranged which gives a fascinating insight into the local culture and children can take part in 'warrior academies' where they learn to identity different animal tracks and poop, as well as warrior techniques to light as fire.

National Parks and Private Conservancies

Many of our guests choose to stay in a private conservancy for their Kenyan safari.as these offer a more private experience with fewer vehicles, as well as the chance to go off-road and try alterative safari activities such as walking or riding. Private conservancies border the national parks with no barriers to the animals so they can wander freely between the two, but the public cannot. For example the Masai Mara National Park borders the Mara North and Mara Naboisho.

Kenyan beaches

A Kenya safari and beach holiday is one of our most popular trip options and with good reason! Relax by Kenya's striking blue waters lapping gently against pristine white sand beaches, Kenya’s coast offers an idyllic getaway for honeymooners, families, and everyone in between.

Boasting hundreds of miles of coral reefs, world-class diving, deep-sea fishing and enough watersports activities to keep you entertained for weeks, a stay in Watamu, Mombasa or Lamu is the perfect way to end your safari holiday.

Best time to visit

A Kenya safari offers fantastic wildlife viewing throughout the year, but there are two times of year that are particularly special.

The first is July to September which is the country's dry season, and is also when the Great Migration happens. The short grasses of the dry season make spotting wildlife easy and temperatures tend to be warm in the day and cool at night. The dry season is also a brilliant time to visit the Kenyan coast where you can enjoy sunny days without the risk of rain.

December to February is also a wonderful time for a Kenyan holiday. A safari Christmas and some winter sun is a very special holiday you will be sure to remember, and the rains are short during December. January and February is typically the calving season giving you a wonderful chance to see new born animals and migratory birds. There are fewer visitors at this time of year to July to September making it a brilliant time of year for those wanting to avoid the crowd and see some fantastic wildlife amongst the long, green grasses.

The peak rainy season is between March and May where it can get very wet and rain for much of the day - this is best avoided is possible.

When to go to kenya.

Find out the best time to visit Kenya with our month by month guide.

January is a great time for wildlife viewing. The landscapes are lush and green after the 'short rains' and newborn animals can been seen. It is hot, but brief afternoon or evening showers cool things down, without compromising your safari. Over on the coast the sea is clear, making it ideal for diving and snorkelling, and the days are warm and bright.

February is an ideal time to visit Kenya, and great for game viewing. The landscapes are green and thriving thanks to the short rains, and newborn animals will be hopping around the plains. There maybe a few afternoon showers which are welcome in the heat, and don't impact on wildlife viewing. Water clarify is excellent at the moment, which is good news for watersports enthusiasts. And if you want to spot a whale shark, now is the time to try.

Still a good option for wildlife viewing and diving, although with the 'long rains' just around the corner, expect wetter and hotter weather.

April brings the start of the 'long rains' which means game reserves and national parks become muddy and harder to drive around. Over on the coast it's hot and wet, so it isn't the best time of year to travel. Some camps and lodges close during this period.

The 'long rains' continue into May, making park tracks difficult to navigate in the mud, and the coast very warm and wet. There will be less accommodation choice at this time as several lodges and camps during this period.

June is a beautiful time of year to visit Kenya, with the rains receding to just light showers, and the long dry season not far ahead. The high grasses can sometimes make it more of a challenge to spot game, but the landscapes are lush and some animals may begin arriving early for the migration. At altitude nights can be cool, but elsewhere the temperature is pleasant.

July marks the beginning of the great migration into the Masai Mara , and with warm and generally dry weather, this is a great time of year to visit. Days are sunny, skies are blue and there isn't too much dust around, so it's a great time for photography.

The migration is now in full swing in the Masai Mara, with lots of river crossing action, so if you want to see those massive herds of wildebeest and zebra, now is the time to come. Game viewing in general is excellent and it's one of the most popular times of year to visit, so some of the main parks do become crowded. Temperatures are warm and dry.

Game viewing continues to be excellent, and the weather is generally dry so this is another ideal month to visit Kenya's parks. The bush is less dense and as animals gather around waterholes and rivers it makes wildlife spotting much easier.

October is a great time if you want to avoid the crowds and don't mind the temperature slowly starting to rise. There may be a few short showers, but game viewing remains excellent with the end of the migration, and it's a good time to holiday anywhere in Kenya.

November heralds the start of the 'short rains' and with hotter temperatures some camps are closed. The Mara however is still open, and despite sometimes stormy skies, game viewing is still good. Fewer crowds and lower prices make this an attractive month to visit. Over on the coast water clarify is good for snorkelling and diving.

The 'short rains' are bringing the landscapes back to life, and as the plains start to become green again, wildlife viewing remains good, and it's a great time for birding. Some camps are closed (mainly in the north of Kenya) but many others remain open. The showers tend to fall in the afternoons and don't impact greatly on a safari. Take advantage of reduced visitor numbers and lower prices.
