San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido
San Diego Zoo Safari Park is much like a typical zoo but with a large area that is designed for the preservation of African animals. This is the main draw, as the park offers all sorts of tours and safaris that take you up close and personal with these animals in their free roaming area. It’s actually a lot of fun, and a unique way to have a safari type experience without leaving the country, plus there are hundreds of other animals to see while you are there as well. Here is all the information on this park and let me know what you think in the comments.
- Cost: $58 for adults, $48 for kids (as of 2019)
- This information was from my visit in 2019
- Location: 15500 San Pasqual Valley Rd, Escondido, CA 92027
- Read more about my favorite spots in San Diego here
Getting There
The park is located about 30 minutes north of Downtown San Diego. To get there, you will take the 163 North to the 15 North and then get off on exit 27 for Rancho Parkway. Turn right and follow the signs which will direct you to the park, about 5 miles off the freeway. There is parking right at the Safari Park.
After arriving and finding a place to park, you will make your way up the small hill to the entrance of the Safari Park.
The park is pretty massive, at over 1,800 acres (most of which is for the animals in the African Plains area), so it is best to plan what you want to see, as it may be hard to see it all.
I would recommend going over to the African Plains area first and getting in line to ride the tram.
Depending on when you go, the line could be long, and it is best to do this experience first since it is the highlight of the park.
The ride takes about 45 minutes, and it goes throughout the African plains recreation they have there with rhinos, giraffes, antelope, etc.
You stay on the tram the entire time, but you have the opportunity to see all sorts of animals, depending on where they are at since it is a cage-free zone.
I have been on this many times, but it is different every time and always a lot of fun.
After you have finished the ride, you can make your way to one of the half dozen or so distinct areas they have around the park.
I love elephants, so that is where I always go first. Also, the park is famous for its condor rehabilitation program, so that is a good area to see as well.
I would recommend finding out when the cheetah run happens and planning to see that also. The cheetah run is a fantastic experience as it allows you to see how fast cheetahs can actually run, and it is something I will never forget.
Also, another favorite of mine was feeding the lorikeet birds. You can pay for a little nectar, and they will land on your hands to eat it. It is a blast.
This is just a taste of what you can see on a visit to the Safari Park as there are over 300 species of animals there.
I would recommend that you visit, it is a cool experience in California. I like it better than the San Diego Zoo , but they are both run by the same company, and depending on how much you like animals, you might want to go to both. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Ever wondered what it’s like to be up close and personal with a cheetah, or to hear a lion’s roar echo through the night? Well, buckle up, because we’re about to embark on a wild adventure at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (aka the Wild Animal Park). This isn’t your typical zoo visit. It’s an immersive experience that transports you and your family into the heart of diverse ecosystems, where you’ll encounter some of the world’s most exotic creatures. So, let’s dive right in and explore the wild side of San Diego!
A Walk on the Wild Side: The San Diego Zoo Safari Park Experience
Planning your safari adventure, exploring the park: map and major attractions, must-see animals and exhibits, choosing the right safari for you, special exhibits: dinosaurs, birds, and butterflies, preparing for your visit, conservation efforts and educational opportunities, food and amenities, comparing san diego zoo and safari park, amenities and services, staying near san diego zoo safari park, tips and tricks for a great visit, bottom line.
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, formerly known as the Wild Animal Park, offers a unique experience that sets it apart from other zoos. Nestled in the San Pasqual Valley area of San Diego, California, the park has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1972. Originally named the San Diego Wild Animal Park, it was a place where animals from the San Diego Zoo could live in large, open spaces. Housing over 3,600 animals representing more than 300 species in large habitat areas, the park provides plenty of stimulation for its inhabitants, allowing them to interact with various species they might encounter in a natural environment. This 1,800-acre wildlife preserve and botanical garden offer a lot of adventure, and we’re here to guide you through it.
The park changed its name when it shifted its focus to offer more intimate animal encounters and adventure experiences that mimic going on a mini safari. You can even camp out in the middle of the savanna between the elephants and lions for Roar & Snore! Other experiences include zip-lining over animal enclosures, meeting animals up close in a safari setting, or getting a condor’s-eye view of the park from a giant balloon.
What Makes San Diego Zoo Safari Park Unique?
What sets the San Diego Zoo Safari Park apart is its commitment to conservation and its unique approach to animal exhibits. The park spans an impressive 1,800 acres, designed to mimic natural habitats, giving visitors the opportunity to see animals interact as they would in the wild. The park is also home to the world-renowned Institute for Conservation Research, where scientists conduct research to conserve species and habitats. From the African Plains to the Asian Savanna, every corner of the park offers a new adventure.
Best Time to Visit
While the park is open year-round, the best time to visit is during the cooler months, from September to May. During these months, the animals tend to be more active and the park is less crowded. However, any time is a good time to visit the park, as there are always exciting exhibits and experiences to enjoy.
Tickets and Discounts
Admission to the park includes access to all the exhibits, shows, and the Africa Tram.
As of my last visit, a one-day pass for adults (ages 12 and up) was $69, and a one-day pass for children (ages 3-11) was $59. Children 2 and under are free. Prices may vary, so I recommend checking the park’s official website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
There are also special experiences available for an additional cost, such as the Cheetah Run, Roar & Snore Safari, and Behind-the-Scenes Safari. The park offers discounts for AAA members, military personnel, and San Diego residents. Be sure to check the official website for the most up-to-date information on ticket prices and discounts.
But if you want to head straight to the gate (especially if you are doing any early early safaris, which start before the ticket windows open and you need separate park admission for those) – then you really want to have the tickets ahead of time.
E-ticket from GetYourGuide is the easiest as you just redeem them at the park turnstile.

Weather Considerations
San Diego has a mild climate year-round, but it can get hot in the summer months. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated. Most of the park is outdoors, so be prepared for the elements. There are a number of experiences that will get you up close and personal with the animals, and it’s best to book those in advance. Many of these experiences have age restrictions, so keep those in mind as you search for the right experience for your family.
Understanding the Park Layout
The park is divided into different zones, each representing a different region of the world. The Africa Tram, which is included with admission, offers a guided tour around the African and Asian regions of the park, providing an overview of the different habitats and the animals that live in them.

The park is home to a diverse range of animals, from the majestic African elephants and graceful giraffes to the elusive cheetahs and playful lemurs. In addition to its regular exhibits, the park also hosts special exhibits throughout the year. Past exhibits have included Dino Mountain, a prehistoric adventure featuring life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, and the Butterfly Jungle, a seasonal exhibit where visitors can walk among thousands of beautiful butterflies.
Whether you’re going on a safari or hopping around the park, you’ll need to dress for a workout. Wear layers you can shed as the sun warms things up in the afternoon. Hiking shoes or good walking shoes are a necessity for exploring the park, which is very spread out and hilly. Despite all of the walking, the park is very kid-friendly. There are multiple playgrounds, a lot of shady spots, fun photo opportunities for tadpoles, and limitless chances to hop, skip, jump, and climb around the park.
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park isn’t just about fun and adventure. It’s also a leading center for wildlife conservation and education. The park is involved in various conservation projects worldwide, working to protect and preserve endangered species. During your visit, you can learn about these efforts through informative displays and educational talks. The park also offers a range of educational programs for kids and adults alike, including summer camps, wildlife sleepovers, and behind-the-scenes tours.
After all that adventure, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Luckily, the park offers a variety of dining options to suit all tastes. The park also has several gift shops where you can pick up souvenirs, as well as amenities such as stroller rentals and wheelchair accessible facilities.

NV obtains new photos and videos of the elimination of traitorous ex-MP Ilya Kyva near Moscow
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Photos and videos of the elimination of pro-Russian ex-MP Ilya Kyva in a Moscow suburb were obtained by NV from sources in Ukraine’s SBU Security Service on Dec. 11.
This special operation was meticulously planned and successfully executed, the SBU informant confirmed.

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.
Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.
“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.
Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.
Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.
Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.
The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports
N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.
Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.
Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.
Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .
The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.
Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.
The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .
Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.
One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.
Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."
The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .
Knewz.com reported previously:
“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.
The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].
One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”
The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.
Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.
Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.
Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .
Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.
The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.
