Safari Straps TJ Cage Nets

Nets for your TJ…..do you need them?  Sure you do for a couple of reasons.  First reason, they look good.  I’ve not met all that many Jeepers who don’t take seriously the look of their rigs.  And the truth be told, I like the look myself.

Another reason….keeping your gear in place.  They really do a good job of helping to ensure your gear, pieces, and parts don’t go here and there when you least expect it.

Here are a few times where cage nets can help ensure your stuff stays put!  After all, do we really plan on these things happening?  (ok, so some of us do….)

safari straps jeep

I’ll admit, I had several minutes advance notice before I headed up this waterfall, however, I didn’t realize I was going to be standing my TJ nearly vertical while getting to the top.  (Did I mention this was the 1st run for my then new beadlocks?)

safari straps jeep

Or how about that unexpected flop on the trail (I’m on the strap pulling for all I’m worth)….out goes the cooler or the picnic basket or the camp stove.  It can happen when you least expect it.  This becomes even more of a concern when the folks who enjoy going topless strip down for the summer season.  (did that come out right?)

safari straps jeep

Safaristraps.com offers a number of net configurations for both the TJ and JK’s roll cages.  They have a 4 piece cage set that provides TJs and JKs with full coverage over the back half of the vehicle.  It consists of a net for the roll cage, a pair of side window nets, and a divider that fits directly behind the front seats to keep “things” out of your lap as you are driving…..and that could be anything from the 75 pound family lap dog to the bags of groceries you just picked up for that weekend camping trip.

safari straps jeep

It was a nice sunny afternoon near the end of January when the new nets were to be installed.  (For the benefit of those freezing their backends off in the middle of winter, I thought I would casually mention how nice it was here in Arizona.)  I unzipped the two side windows and the rear window from my Viking Fast Back  soft top and set them aside.  Oops….a 15 minute delay came up next as I took the opportunity to clean things up a bit for the ensuing photos.  It had been a while since the housekeeper had cleaned out the back of the TJ.

With the windows removed and the cleanup complete, I loosened the tie downs holding the bikini top in place and folded the top back on itself towards the front of the TJ.  I needed access to the top of the roll cage in order to secure the forward most straps for the cage net.

A note about the cage net…..proper orientation of the net is such that you can read the Safari Straps product label while standing behind the vehicle.

safari straps jeep

With the net laid across the roll cage area, loop the straps at the front corners around the front of the roll bar and up to the buckle.  Leave the buckles loose for now as they will be tightened later when everything is in place.

Loop the next set of straps (moving towards the rear) around the roll bars on either side.  As before, leave these buckles loose too to allow easy position of the nets as the installation progresses.

I noticed that the hardware (buckles and rings) are powder coated.  I personally like this better than some of the “shiny” hardware I’ve seen on other products.  I put a magnet to the rings and it stuck….I was good with that….steel and not aluminum or some other non-ferrous material.

Up next was the side windows.  OK, I’ll admit I put them in wrong the first time…..yes, there is a left and a right window.  But I didn’t see anything in the directions about it so I’m using that as my excuse. <grin>

Just so no one else gets confused, the Safari Straps product label will be closer to the front of the vehicle as viewed from outside the vehicle and looking at the side window.  (see next photo)

safari straps jeep

Here is the driver’s side rear window net installed (for the 2nd time).  Safari Straps did a good job in sizing the window to accommodate the opening, in my opinion.

safari straps jeep

While attaching the window nets, I noticed that the strap that ran around the outer edge of the window net was actually two straps sewn together.  This sandwiches the other straps as they are attached.  In fact, any strap with a ring attached to it is constructed in this double layer method.  While I am not a “strap guru” by any stretch, this sure seems like a good idea to me…..and everyone likes heavy duty on their Jeep, right?

Since we are on the topic of good ideas, I was happily surprised to see a bag of strap retaining clips included with the nets.  Let me show you what I am talking about.

safari straps jeep

The retaining clips, (Safari Straps refers to them as  Slip Keepers ) which can be easily attached to a strap in almost any location, will hold the “loose end” of the strap after it has passed through the buckle.  This means you won’t have a TJ (or JK) full of flapping straps ends waving at everyone as you drive down the highway….but if you like that idea, then leave the clips off and let your ends fly freely!  Seriously, having loose strap ends has always been one of the few things I found annoying with any net installation.  Congrats to Safari Straps for providing an easy way to accommodate those of us that may be more anal retentive than others.  It eliminates the need to use those little black zip ties that keep things looking smart but are a hassle none the less.

With both window nets in place (but not yet snugged into position), I turned my attention once again to the roll cage net.  I snugged the two most forward straps (at the front corners) quite a bit more than was shown in the previous photo.  This pulled the net a little more forward.  The next pair of straps on the cage net were tightened down to properly center the net between the roll cage bars from side to side and put a little more tension on the net.

The remaining rings along the sides on the roll cage net are secured to the roll cage by the rear straps that hold the window nets in place.  Simply catch the ring in the strap as you loop it around the roll cage and back to the buckle.  By using the window straps to secure this portion of the roll cage net, you have less straps and buckles to deal with…..another good idea, in my opinion.

safari straps jeep

Next up was the divider net.  It attaches to the roll cage uprights adjacent to the front seats.  The same quality is seen in this net as well which has double straps and powder coated hardware.  As seen in the above photo, Safari Straps has left an adequately sized spot for you to easily reach through to extract items that you may frequently need.  It is simpler than going to the rear of the vehicle to gain access.  At the same time, with the seat in its usual position, the “hole” won’t let anything get into the forward area of the cab.  Another opening exists on the driver’s side too.

safari straps jeep

Speaking of things getting into the forward portion of the vehicle’s cab, Syra was really happy when I told her I needed her to give me her best “pitman” pose….so she gave me her infamous “Go ahead, make my day!” look.  ( pitman  = half  pit bull terrier, half red dober man pincher)  She got pretty stoked when I told her it was time to go for a ride in the TJ.  She said to tell you that there are plenty more photos of her sitting in the back of the TJ surrounded by the nets…..and that autographed copies (well, paw printed if you must know) are available upon request…..shipping and handling charges apply.  Syra was also very happy when she discovered that all I had to do to allow her free roaming up front was to unbuckle the two lowest straps (on the divider) and she could sneak to the front by going right over the center console.  Did I mention she enjoys sitting in the front seat while the TJ is parked at the mall parking lot?   With the half doors on, she lays down in the seat with her chin on the door and watches the folks go by.  To date, no one has been stupid enough to attempt to remove anything from the Jeep.  <grin>    Trivia fact…..the folks that own Safari Straps also have a doberman?

safari straps jeep

This isn’t part of the roll cage net set but I thought I would toss it into the review anyway.  The nets will do a good job of confining your belongings to the back of the TJ or JK.  However, you still don’t want your “stuff” bouncing around and worse, maybe getting damaged.  So Safari Straps offers a “bag-o-straps” to help keep things in their place.  The drawstring closure bag contains a dozen straps ranging from 4 ft. to 10 ft. in length.  (2-10′, 2-8′, 4-6′, and 4-4′)   Just like the hardware on the nets, the buckles on the straps are also powder coated.  The bag is big enough for you to toss some other odds and ends in too…..I found a good place for my bungee cords to reside!

Safari Straps TJ Cage Nets

The best part installing the passenger side window was knowing it was right on account of the practice I had installing the previous one.   Same as the other side….no loose strap ends to flap in the breeze.

safari straps jeep

Each strap intersection is sewn in a boxed X pattern to ensure the straps won’t be separating when the going gets tough.

So what prompts a company to produce a good quality product?  I had to ask so I fired off an e-mail and played twenty questions with the person responding….Are you a Jeeper?  What kind of rig to you have?  Where do you wheel?  Does your dog ride in back too?

I found a very friendly lady managing the e-mail in basket.  Yes, her and her husband do wheel their 4 door JK which is setup with 5.13 gears, 37″ rubber, full skids, a Rockhard roll cage, sPOD to manage the electrics….well, you get the idea.  The Johnson Valley and the Dusy-Ershim provide interesting trails to run and the Rubicon Trail is on the agenda for this year.  And they have a nice big male Dobie that is pretty good looking….at least the photo I showed Syra got her pretty excited.  <grin>

Anything you take on the trail is bound to get dirty/dusty/muddy.  The nets are all machine washable but one is advised to not use the dryer after they come out of the washer.  Instead, you can either put the nets back on the Jeep (slightly damp) or toss them over the clothesline for a few hours and then reinstall them.   Given this info, those of you that are inclined to simply drive your Jeep to the car wash and spray it down, inside and out…..don’t worry about taking the nets off…..just go for it.

safari straps jeep

I was happy to find that none of the buckles up top caused an issue after I placed my Viking top back into position.  I had some initial concerns about the hardware being underneath the top where it wraps tightly against the roll cage.  Not a problem.

safari straps jeep

So there you have it…..everything back in place except for the Viking’s side and rear windows.  Given the awesome weather we’ve been having, I ran around town over the weekend setup as shown above.  I even managed to look up a couple of friends to let them see it.

In summary, I do believe that  Safari Straps  has a very good product available to offer their fellow Jeepers.  The fit and details are second to none and go a long way in demonstrating the quality of the product.  If you are in the market for a good set of nets, I don’t see how you can go wrong with Safari Straps.

Update 5/9/2009:

Its been about 4 months since I put the new nets on the TJ.   ZERO complaints .  The straps have remained tight, the buckles have not slipped, and all is good.  As I said before, I don’t see how you can go wrong with Safari Straps.  By the way, they have some other cool stuff on their  web site .  I’ve added a couple of things on another page so  check it out !

Update 6/6/2009:

I was recently participating in an on-line forum where the topic was Safari Straps nets.  A person in the discussion was concerned about the gap at the tail gate and if his dog could slip through it.  I dropped Safari Straps an e-mail to inquire and received the following info:

About a month ago we added a new Extended Version for the JK’s, which goes all the way to the tailgate. You can see pics on our website. A couple of days ago we designed the same for the TJ, its not on our site, but the concept is the same as the JK’s., it covers the area between the roll cage and the tailgate using the rear tailgate bar. It works with the soft top on or off. When you put the soft top on, and the windows on, you just unhook the hooks from the tailgate bar, and leave your nets on. Theres no drilling. For the JK we offer it in all the styles, for the TJ we recommend only the long cage and cage, not window set.

I’ve stated in other reviews of other products that just because a company, in this case Safari Straps, brings a good product to market, that doesn’t mean they can sit back on their laurels.  They need to continue to refine their product offerings in response to their customer’s needs.  The above is a perfect example of how Safari Straps is doing this very thing.  Way to go!

Safari Straps

So….maybe you aren’t in the market for a roll cage net or window nets?  OK….I understand that not everyone needs those items in their Jeep (but they are pretty darn cool!).  There are a couple of must have items that every Jeep needs.  I had a chance to check out several of them and was quite impressed with what I saw.  Here are a couple that I just couldn’t do without!

Grab Handles

safari straps jeep

Just two words describe these grab handles…..heavy duty and comfortable.  Sometimes those two words don’t go well together but in this case, they do.  Available in black or black (that’s a joke!), they will go well with any TJ color scheme.

safari straps jeep

I put the grab handles on the roll cage bars to assist me getting into the TJ.  They can be place just about anywhere you have roll bars.  Getting into the rear of a lifted TJ is a lot easier with a couple of these on the rear roll bars.

Cell Phone Holder

safari straps jeep

I’ve never lost my cell phone on the trail….but I found someone’s cell phone on a trail one time.  I’m thinking the owner should have had one of these.  Self adjusting to accommodate most any cell phone, this is the perfect place to put it so I won’t find your phone on the trail.  I like it because it locates the phone up higher in the vehicle which gives you a little edge on signal strength and it keeps it close to my head making it easier to hear it ring.

Fire Extinguisher Holder

safari straps jeep

I won’t show you what I using to keep this fire extinguisher in place before I switched to the holder from Safari Straps.  This holder rocks!  The lower strap has a “bottom” strap sewn to it to keep the extinguisher from sliding down and out of the holder.  As with the others items, full width Velcro is used to secure the retaining straps in position.  This extinguisher is really in there.  However, peeling back the two straps easily releases it if you should need it (and hopefully you never will).

Drink cooler

safari straps jeep

Looking for something to stash that 20 oz. drink in?  This will keep it for you.  Comes with a carabineer detachable Velcro strap to keep it from bouncing out of the Jeep.  A zippered pouch on the front keeps all that other “stuff” that you need on the trail….well, maybe not the 30′ recovery strap, but most of the other stuff will fit. <grin>

Very detailed! I'm lovin' the Giant Rumble Bee.

safari straps jeep

Hemo, I have a ORH Whisper top on order (2 months) and according to Tim it is being shipped. Can you tell me which tailgate bar you used? I like the idea of the velcro being attached to the bar instead of the tailgate. I don't want to have to keep undoing the velcro everytime I open the tailgate. Thanks JJ

Obtaining The Mopar Tailgate Bar JJ, I ordered the Mopar Tailgate Bar through Wyckoff Parts. I did it through that other maker JK forum site. I found out later there is also someone here on JKO that provides access to all Mopar parts. Make sure you also get the Tailgate Bar with the left & right brackets. The brackets are cool. They just snap onto the edge of the body tub on either side of the tailgate. No screws no muss, no fuss. HERE ARE THE MOPAR PART NUMBERS.... Tailgate Bar 55395757AC $60.39 Left Retainer Clip 55395761AE $6.65 Right Retainer Clip 55395760AE $6.65 If you want to order from Wyckoff's web site you can use the link directly below and punch in the part number listed above. http://www.partswebsite.com/wyckoffmopar/ Let me know if you need any additional information. Nice detailed writeup. I have the Safari Straps as well. I am currently using velcro on the tailgate for my Heros top. With all of the rain we get in WA I am concerned about leaks. I need to find a good waterproof way to use the Mopar tailgate bar I have sitting in the storage room.

Looks great! I've been looking at the ORH top for a while now, but wont give up my Safari Straps. glad to see that they work well together. As far as the cargo cover, I LOVE mine! great addition to the Safari Straps line!

Hey Joker and everyone else. Thanks for the nice comments. I really appreciate your feedback. My JK is a labor of love. I did everything humanly possible to my wife's YJ. I finally ran out of things to do to it and decided I wanted a new JK to work on. When I bought my JK someone said it looked like a big bumblebee. I immediately replied that it wasn't a bumblebee, it is a RUMBLEBEE. I immediately started looking for a cool image of a muscular bee. I kept thinking of making a sticker somewhat like the old Dodge SuperBee logo. I stumbled across the image of the bee with the muscled arms and immediately liked it. A buddy at work then added the circle around it and flowed the text into the bottom of it. I loved the result and immediately had two door sized magnets made. I also obtained a custom license plate that says "RUMBLBEE". I know... a little hokey but I really like it. I LOVE my Safari Straps and I LOVE my ORH tops. I am thrilled they are able to work together. We have had some torential downpours lately and I have yet to notice a leak anywhere. I feel pretty good about the slight tailgate mod to the ORH top. Thanks again for the nice feedback. Roger "Hemo" Kasten

safari straps jeep

Nice looking setup!! I already have the ORH.. the Safari Straps are on the list!

Thanks for the info on the bar....I will post a pic of my whisper top as soon as I get it....ordered top on May 12th, hopefully it should be here soon. JJ

safari straps jeep

I just got the new whisper top. Should I get the Mopar tailgate bar or the bestop tailgate bar? Does anyone know which one will work better with the top and/or safari straps? Thanks guys.

Anybody???

2024 Easter Jeep Safari: Four New Concepts, Each with a Different Purpose and Palette

<p>Aside from the paint, the Willys Dispatcher doesn't look much different from the current Wrangler. Aside from the paint, the Willys Dispatcher doesn't look much different from the current Wrangler. Roll Cage Nets - Safari Straps

safari straps jeep

  • Add to quote

Do you get any kind of wind noise through it? It looks great.

OOOOoooo.......I like.

safari straps jeep

Nice lookin dog! I was thinking of picking up one of those for my jeep when I get home, for my future pup. Any reviews compared to the Raingler nets?

safari straps jeep

I am liking those much more than the Raingler nets. The full kits look to be cheaper than the Raingler version as well. I think the only thing I'd change is putting carabiners on the straps to clip through the rings so they could be disconnected faster. From the pictures it looks like you have to undo the straps from around the rollbars to get into anything. That's the only thing I don't like about the various net systems. Stu, can you show a better picture of how the divider net fastens behind the console? Thanks

Is that the "cage" kit? I'm wondering if it comes all the way forward to the windshield header. I couldn't get any good pics from their website. As for the carabiners, I'm in the military, so I have access to real ones. But even on the outside when I'm not playing over here in the desert... I work for HD, and I know they sell some better quality ones. You aren't going to be able to go climbing with them, but they'll do the job for this. You could even use some of those "G" spring clips if you weren't going to have anything too heavy back there. At the very least for those bottom rings on the divider net. That way you can get in and out of there that much faster. I don't know about you, but reaching back behind that seat and doing damn near anything is a pain in the ***. I can't imagine trying to have the co-ordination to undo one of those straps while trying to get to the cooler or whatever. Thanks for the thread though man. It gives me something else to waste my money on.

i feel like it makes the tj look very bad ***

Those look very nice - I like how the free ends can be secured with the little clips

safari straps jeep

Nice. That is what I was thinking of doing. Now I know how it will look.

safari straps jeep

those are awsome and a lot cheaper that raingler

It's been a long time since I checked out prices. I had a set of Rainglers....bought them used from Jason (groupbuy.com) when he still lived here in the valley.

Funny you posted this, my lab might as well be my gf (my gf is a bit cuter but the comp is tight), but I got this email from Raingler.... Hello, I am looking to purchase a 5 side (left, right, back, top, and front) net for my 04 TJ. My question is, how does the front one attach, I am looking for something I can unlatch or clip to get the dog out of the passenger side. Please let me know your suggestions. Thanks, Benny Hi Benjamin. The back and sides are the part WMSYS on our TJ section of the site. In addition you will want (2) of the RPB nets. One does the overhead rood and the other will block off the front seating area on the Wrangler. This will allow you to simply fold and tumble the passenger seat normally and allow the dog out. When the seat is foilded back up, it will also block off the opening again. Ley me know if any questions, but sounds like what you are requesting. Thanks much for the inquiry. Eddie 8

Great write-up as usual Stu. I'm glad you put this up because I wanted to buy some but now I can see that my dog would still be able to escape so I've got to come up with something else or modify these. With the pics you posted, I can plan ahead. Yes, my dog is small enough to make a snack for yours. She small, but very tenacious and I know she could get over/under/through a few of those holes.

safari straps jeep

I know this post is quite old, but has anyone made their own nets? My mom works at a sewing shop so she would be able to sew all these up, can you buy this strapping material from somewhere? Anyone try this?

safari straps jeep

Yes, there are some threads on that (no pun intended). http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/making-my-own-raingler-nets-716141/

safari straps jeep

I like this, can this be installed with my safari top?

yes, it can.

Welcome to Safari Straps! You've found the best Jeep Cage Nets, Cargo Nets and Tie Down straps available.

Safari Straps has a great selection of nylon, polyester, and polypropylene Cargo Nets ready to go for your industrial use needs.

All of our cargo nets are made in the USA. How are we absolutely certain they're American-made? Because we make them, right here in our manufacturing facility in Valencia, California. We're so proud of this fact and our country that we offer discounts to those in law enforcement, firefighters, and the military. Believe us when we say we wouldn't provide them (or you) with anything less than the best product possible.

Our heavy duty nylon cargo nets are made from top-quality heavyweight webbing. These nylon cargo nets are made with J-hooks or S-hooks so that they're sure to stay where you put them. Don't need the extra weight? We've got light and medium duty nets and cargo straps made from polyester and polypropylene that will still keep everything in place.

Our utility nets are made of heavyweight polypropylene webbing with nickel-plated metal rings and zinc plated metal cam buckles. This allows you to throw them around all you want (like when you're putting it on by yourself) and you don't have to worry about chipping your powder coating.

Need a Jeep Wrangler cargo net? Safari Straps has Jeep JK cargo nets for both 4-door and 2-door Wranglers, made from heavy-duty polypropylene. It stands up to the harsh UV rays, so you don't mind leaving it outside, and it's mildew resistant so it will hold up to the water and mud that you put it through. There's no drilling necessary to install it, and best of all you don't have to remove the net to put the hardtop back on.

Safari straps or Dirty dog pet barrier

safari straps jeep

  • Add to quote

Have 2 40lb Beagles and one gets round the sides of my back seats and crushes the carpet revealing the wiring loom. I am worried that he will damage the electrics so I need a pet barrier that will stop him getting round the side of the seats. Does anyone use either of these two pet barriers and do they stop the dog getting round the edges. I hate the ridged metal type barrier so the best soft option is the way I am going to go. Also it needs to work both with soft and hard top as I use both through out the year.

So after speaking with Safari straps who where very helpful but did say that there barrier would still allow my Beagles to possibly get round the sides I decided to go with the Dirty Dog Barrier as it looks like it will cover the side access to the back seat. Once it is fitted I will put some photo's on and review. I am sure that if my dogs where a bigger breed the safari straps barrier would work just fine.

safari straps jeep

Will post a photo Tomorrow, my Beagle just wants to get in the front!

That would be cool....I really want to see that weak spot. I prototype interior products for off road vehicles, this will be one of my new projects once our 2014 JKUR shows up. Doc

I have the dirty dog ones and am happy. I went with them as the squares were smaller so I figured it would be less likely for my dog to stick her head through and get stuck. Anyway I am very happy with the quality and bought a few other things like the shade for the front. Great product.

I have a safari straps pet barrier as well as the side window nets and there is no way my dogs could get around anything in there, but my dogs are a little larger than yours (2x 80-100 lb American Bulldogs). I still don't think anything over 20lbs could get around what I have. Food for thought.

So here are some pictures of the Beagle problem, Hobie never gets into the front he just wants to see what is going on which is fine but it's the carpet that is the problem, because it is not reinforced it pushes down as in the photo exposing the wiring loom. I have thought about taking the carpet out and Fibre glossing the inside to make it rigid, that may be the way to go.

Hobie Escape artist here are the photo's of the problem.

Car Vehicle Car seat Dog Canidae

Haha. Can't be too mad at him, there's gotta be at least a few hundred years' worth of breeding in him driving him around any obstacle between him and where he wants to be. He would definitely get around a safari straps pet barrier, but not if you also had side window nets. That's also the reason why I replaced the wire wrapping with armored steel wire wrap from the hardware store. That's a pretty hefty project, though. I included a picture of my setup if that helps illustrate my point. If you are leaving the carpet in and just want to protect the wires, it may be worth it to do the steel wrap, as you will only need enough to cover the back 3-4 feet. You're just going to have to cut and re-splice a lot of your wires. I took all the carpet out of my car, so I needed to protect the wires all the way to the front seat, which was tricky since I then had to re-connect all the wires with as little spare room as possible.

Vehicle Car Auto part Rim Wheel

the dirty dog barrier is working out well for me and my mastiffs easy to install and quick to remove if necessary one of those why didn't I do it sooner type of mods highly recommended IMHO

Dirty Dog Barrier Fitted. So i fitted the dirty Dog Barrier, very good Quality and not too bad to fit once you worked it out. seems to be keeping the Hobie in the back but he is trying to get round it. the only problem i had was with the seat belts as these are used all the time and i did not like the way you had to root them with the barrier on. in the end i unbolted the belts and passed them through the Barrier and rebolted them in, this works fine with no interference with the function of the belts ( probably not legal if i have the jeep inspected but i will unbolt them and switch back when the state inspection is due. the company probably does not recommend this for reasons of liability. here are some Pics of the install.

Pattern Hand Textile Finger Metal

I have a 30 lb skinny-ass street dog that still squeezes between the side of the DD pet barrier and my soft top. I like the bungie addition I see in your pictures, thanks!

Hi I have fitted 2 more small bungees since and that has totally worked will take some pictures.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

safari straps jeep

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

safari straps jeep

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

safari straps jeep

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

safari straps jeep

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

safari straps jeep

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

safari straps jeep

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

safari straps jeep

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

safari straps jeep

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

safari straps jeep

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

safari straps jeep

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

safari straps jeep

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

safari straps jeep

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

safari straps jeep

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
