map

Day 1: November 2 - Arrival Day Pago Pago, Tutuila : Arrive in the late evening in Pago Pago on the main island of Tutuila and your NPCA host and trip leader will meet you once you clear immigration and customs. When the group has gathered, transfer in private shuttles to your beachfront hotel, Sadie’s by the Sea, and check-in. Your NPCA host will provide an overview of their role and priorities in the region and the exciting sites you can expect to see throughout your carefully crafted NPCA small group adventure. Sadie’s by the Sea (D)

Day 2: November 3 - Pago Pago, Tutuila : Start your first full day in American Samoa with a group breakfast, introductions, and an orientation to the islands and to fa‘asamoa. The group will then head out together for the National Park of American Samoa (NPAS) Visitor Center , where we will get an overview of the park, which spans land and offshore areas on and around the islands of Tutuila, Ofu and Ta‘ū. A National Park Ranger will join the group as we head out to the Pago Pago section of the national park, which is located on the north side of Tutuila island between Fagasā Bay and Afono Bay and extends from Mt. Alava and the Maunaloa Ridge to the offshore reefs. A picnic lunch will be provided to enjoy during our outing. On the way to the park, we will pass the villages whose chiefs signed the 50-year leases. You may also catch the first glimpse of the large fruit bats, some of which have the wingspan of an owl. Following the visit to the national park, the group will enjoy a tour of the state-of the art Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center to learn about the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa , the largest and most remote of the U.S. National Marine Sanctuaries. Formed by extinct volcanoes, its habitats are host to a bewildering variety of tropical fish, invertebrates and algae. This extraordinary marine national monument has faced unprecedented threats to its vital protections – threats NPCA matched with immediate action ensuring the sanctuary’s natural and cultural resources remained under protection. As you will experience first-hand, its unparalleled beauty is a legacy NPCA remains vigilant in preserving. The group will walk back to the hotel from the Ocean Center to prepare for a group dinner at a local restaurant. Sadie’s by the Sea (B, L, D)

Tutuila Island, American Samoa

Day 3: November 4 - Aunu‘u Island : After enjoying breakfast, depart for your day excursion to Aunu‘u National Natural Landmark . Aunu‘u is a small volcanic island 1.2 miles southeast of Tutuila with a land area of 0.58 square miles and is home to Aunu‘u Village. We will head out to Aunu‘u in water taxis (small boats) with your local guide from Aunu‘u who will take you on a special “insider’s tour” to meet the residents of the village. Residents will share typical aspects of daily village life and Samoan practices and customs, including a traditional “ava” welcome ceremony. They will also share beautiful sites where you can spend some time swimming or snorkeling if you choose. Although the beauty of these sites is unmistakable, residents of the village may share their experiences with challenges from rising sea levels in the area – challenges NPCA is spearheading through innovative plans to help uplift communities most affected from these undue burdens. After swimming or snorkeling, a local style umu lunch will be served, prepared especially for the group by a local family. The “umu” is a traditional Samoan above-ground earthen oven in which food is cooked on heated stones. Samoans usually prepare food in the “umu” on special occasions and for special guests. After lunch we will depart on our return water taxi ride back to Tutuila. At the hotel, you can enjoy a bit of free time before gathering for dinner at the hotel restaurant. Sadie’s by the Sea (B, L, D)

Day 4: November 5 - Pago Pago, Tutuila : Sunday is a day of worship in Samoa. Your morning schedule is free, and you may choose to attend one of the many church services in town. Christian missionaries were very successful throughout Polynesia, and church is a very important part of today’s Samoan culture. Attending church is an interesting cultural experience and an excellent opportunity to also hear wonderful Samoan singing. Services are available in Samoan and English and last approximately an hour. Enjoy lunch in the hotel restaurant, then join your trip leader to head out for a canoe excursion. Paddle an outrigger canoe in Pago Pago Harbor near the hotel with a local canoe club and enjoy panoramic views of Rainmaker Mountain and the historic World War II landmarks of Breakers and Blunts Points under your own power. The group will have dinner together at the hotel, and your trip leader will go over instructions for the three-day visit to the Manu‘a districts of the national park. The islands of Ta‘ū and Ofu are extremely remote with limited modern services. Due to the weight restrictions on the small aircraft for the flight, you will need to pack everything you will need in carry-on sized luggage. The remainder of your luggage will be kept at the hotel in Pago Pago. Sadie’s by the Sea (B, L, D)

Pago Pago Harbor, American Samoa

Day 5: November 6 - Ta‘ū – Ofu, Manu‘a Islands : We will be departing the hotel early this morning to catch the flight to our first stop - Ta‘ū, the largest of the Manu‘a Islands . We will provide a boxed breakfast for you. Historically the island of Ta‘ū enjoys high status, not only because its size and beauty, but also because of its connection to Tu‘i Manu‘a, the oldest chiefly title in the Samoan Islands and in all of Polynesia. The national park covers the southeastern half of the island, which makes Ta‘ū’s portion the largest area (approximately 5,400 acres, of which 1,000 acres is offshore) of the national park. We will be exploring coastal areas and paths which are often overgrown. An “explorer’s spirit” will be rewarded with access to secluded beaches, a littoral forest and archaeological sites. While you delight in the deeply significant histories and culture on the remarkable journey through Ta‘ū, we’ll delve deeper into NPCA’s efforts to ensure national parks thrive for the next 100 years, a goal that prioritizes the protection of cultural sites and artifacts. Local residents will prepare a delicious lunch for us before we depart on a 2-hour boat ride to Ofu. Upon our arrival on Ofu, the group will transfer to the Vaoto Lodge, located in the national park and check-in. There will be some time to explore the area and the sandy beach in front of the lodge before joining the group for dinner. Vaoto Lodge (B, L, D)

Day 6 and 7: November 7-8 - Ofu, Manu‘a Islands : We will be spending two days on Ofu Island . We’ll hike its mountains, explore its wildlife and plants, swim and snorkel in a pristine sea, get to know the beautiful coral reefs and enjoy American Samoa’s loveliest beach all within the national park. As there are less than 200 residents on this island, it is truly a “private paradise.” As you enjoy the treasures of the park, you’ll get a behind the scenes look at how NPCA and thousands of park advocates helped secure permanent funding for our world-class national parks through the Great American Outdoors Act. In the evening, Ofu is a perfect spot for stargazing and viewing the Southern Cross and falling stars in the night sky of the Southern Hemisphere. All meals will be prepared by the owner and served at the lodge. Vaoto Lodge (B, L, D)

Coral in the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa

Day 8: November 9 - Departure Day - Return to Pago Pago, Tutuila : Today, we will enjoy our last breakfast at Vaoto Lodge and check out. We will walk over to the Ofu airport, just a few steps away from the lodge and check-in for our flight back to Pago Pago. We will arrive in Pago Pago in time to drop off our luggage at Sadie’s by the Sea before continuing on to a local restaurant for lunch. After lunch, we will take a historic walking tour of Fagatogo with a local guide. The village of Fagatogo has been the center of American Samoa since serving as the administrative headquarters of the U.S. Naval base Pago Pago from 1900 to 1951. It was for many decades the most westernized village in the Territory, and the only village with a paved road. Today, only 14 Naval buildings remain, and in 1988 many of them were entered onto the National Register of Historic Places to become part of the U.S. Naval Sation Tutuila Historic District (in Pago Pago Harbor). During the tour, we’ll learn why expanding protections for historic sites is a high priority for NPCA. The remainder of the day is free to explore the town on your own or enjoy the beach in front of the hotel or squeeze in a late hike. Check-out of your room in the evening before joining the group for a farewell dinner at the hotel. After dinner, we will transfer to Pago Pago Airport by private shuttle to catch the flight to Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Day use rooms at Sadie’s by the Sea (B, L, D)

Fresh fruit and vegetables including taro, banana and coconut (in all forms) are all staples of Samoan cuisine. As is seafood, which isn't surprising when the islands are surrounded by rich waters home to diverse species of marine life. Samoans also have a sweet tooth, and you'll find plenty of delicious desserts on the menu (many of which are made with coconut and banana).

Like other island nations in the South Pacific, the traditional way of cooking is in an  umu  – a shallow pit filled with hot volcanic rocks. One of the best opportunities to try Samoan food cooked in an umu is at a  fiafia  night – a night of celebration, traditional fire knife performances, dance and music followed by a huge feast.

Here are some popular Samoan dishes to try:

  • Palusami   – coconut milk and onions baked in young taro leaves
  • Faiai eleni   – Samoan fish bake made with mackerel, taro leaves, sliced onions, spices and coconut milk
  • Fa’apapa   – sweet and fluffy coconut bread, usually eaten for breakfast
  • Kopai   – sweet dumplings drenched in a gooey soup-like sauce made from coconut cream and brown sugar
  • Sapasui   – the Samoan version of chop suey made from vermicelli noodles, garlic, meat, veggies and soy sauce
  • Pani popo   – buns baked in a sweet coconut and syrup sauce
  • Keke pua’a   – a bao-type bun filled with pork or other meats such as chicken or lamb, onions, garlic and herbs
  • Koko alaisa   – cooked rice mixed with coconut milk and chocolate powder from Samoan cacao

Festivals and Events

Samoa has a rich culture and many ancient traditions and customs are still practised today. Below are some of the biggest festivals and holidays in the Samoan events calendar:

  • Fire Knife Festival   – Held every May, the Fire Knife Competition/Festival showcases some of Samoa’s best fire knife throwers. This ancient ceremonial dance is an important part of Samoan culture and was traditionally performed by warriors before going to battle, and would’ve been accompanied by chanting, drumming and singing.
  • Independence Day   – Although Samoa gained independence from New Zealand on 1 January 1962, the day is celebrated on 1 June in the dry season (January is in the middle of the wet season). On this public holiday, spirits are high and celebrations pop all over the islands with traditional music and dance spilling onto the streets, and of course, huge feasts.
  • Teuila Festival   – Held in August or September every year, Teuila Festival is one of the biggest, most anticipated festivals in the South Pacific. It’s a chance to celebrate all the unique and beautiful things about Samoan culture from traditional dancing and tattooing demonstrations to cooking and local art exhibitions.

Weather in Samoa

Samoa has a tropical climate and experiences two distinct seasons: a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October. The weather is balmy all year round with average temperatures that range from 72 °F/22 °C  to 88 °F /31 °C .

There is a slight increase in heat and humidity during the wet season, as well as a risk of tropical cyclones and typhoons. It's also not uncommon for flooding to occur after heavy rain, particularly in and around the capital city of Apia. The water temperature doesn't fluctuate much, with average temperatures lingering between 80°F/ 27°C and 84°F/ 29°C throughout the year.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

When is the best time to visit Samoa?

For the best weather, we recommend visiting Samoa during the dry season as this is when you'll experience the beaches and vibrant Samoan culture in their full glory. That said, Samoa's dry season coincides with the peak tourist season, so if you're looking for a quieter, more relaxing experience, you might be better off traveling in the shoulder months of May and October when things are still heating up. Traveling in the wet season (November to April) isn't off the cards, but you'll have to be prepared for higher temperatures, humidity and rainfall, and maybe even the occasional cyclone or typhoon.

What should I pack for a trip to Samoa?

Samoa boasts warm, tropical weather all year round. Add that to the fact you'll probably spend most of your time relaxing on pristine beaches or in stunning lagoons, you don't really need to pack much! Light, summery clothing, swimwear, sun protective gear and thongs are essential. As are a pair of runners or hiking boots if you intend on walking or cycling along the coast. Here are the essential items to pack for Samoa:

  • small backpack for day tours
  • waterproof bag to protect your gear during water activities
  • reef-friendly sunscreen
  • sunglasses and sunhat
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • reusable water bottle
  • insect repellant
  • quick-dry towel
  • reef shoes or waterproof sandals
  • light sweater for cooler evenings

What will it cost for a...?

The tālā is the currency used in Samoa. The prices below are shown in USD for ease of comparison:

  • Glass or bottle of beer = USD 3
  • Cup of coffee= USD 4
  • Simple lunch at a local cafe = USD 7
  • Dinner at a restaurant = USD 17

Is tipping customary in Samoa?

Tipping isn't expected in Samoa, but if you're particularly happy with a service and you'd like to show your appreciation, a tip will be very welcomed.

True Wind Healing Travel

Live & Travel Well for a Healing Journey...

South pacific’s splendid american samoa – a treasure island.

American Samoa Attractions

American Samoa is a tropical paradise island in the South Pacific that’s also a U.S. territory.  The author, Robert Louis Stevenson, of Treasure Island lived his last 5 years here.  I spent a day exploring sites, such as, Stevenson’s beautiful estate, beaches, waterfalls and tropical gardens.  So, read on to learn about a suggested itinerary for an American Samoa travel tour on this “Treasure Island.”

“Seaward ho! Hang the treasure! It’s the glory of the sea that has turned my head.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

American Samoa in the South Pacific is an unincorporated territory of the U.S.  It consists of 5 main islands and 2 coral atolls.  Furthermore, the largest and most populous island is Tutuila, with the capital city and port-of-call, Pago Pago.  Also, other islands include Manu’a Islands, Rose Atoll and Swains Island.

Pago Pago is a gateway to the National Park of American Samoa.  Overall, this protects coral reefs, lush rainforests and waters frequented by humpback whales.  For military buffs, Fagatogo Village has the Jean P. Haydon Museum, with artifacts from a U.S. Navy Facility.  Also, in Pago Pago is the Sadie Thompson Inn.  W. Somerset Maugham made this name famous from his short story , Rain , written after visiting the island.  Another iconic landmark here is Mount Alava, at 500 m high with epic views of Pago Pago Harbor.

Fales or Samoan Thatched Overwater Bungalows

The pristine beaches and shoreline are breathtaking.  Visitors can stay in a Samoan house called a Fale .  Moreover, these overwater bungalows or “Fales” with thatched roofs are the quintessential way to experience the authentic tropical life of this island.

My American Samoa Travel Tour Stevenson’s Estate, Waterfalls and Gardens

Papapapaitai Falls

With only a day, I enjoyed a tour of highlights, such as, the literary giant, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Estate, Papapapaitai Falls, lush rainforests and gardens.  This was an incredible tour for literary buffs, following the theme of discovering Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

Papapapaitai (Tiavi) Falls

Firstly, we stopped on Cross-Island Road to see the majestic Papapapaitai Falls .  Among lush rainforests, the highest waterfall in Samoa, cascades down 100 m into a deep gorge.  We stopped at a stunning viewpoint, where I also discovered beautiful blue butterflies on Vervain flowers.

Robert Louis Stevenson Museum and Gardens

For my part, I travel not to go anywhere but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.”  – Robert Louis Stevenson

The Robert Louis Stevenson Estate named “Vailima” is a wonderful way to learn about the life of this Scottish literary Giant’s novels, poetry and travel writing.  Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the famous adventure novel, Treasure Island , narrating stories about “buccaneers and buried gold.”  This story inspired legends and stories throughout the last century, especially about the theme of pirates and treasure maps. Also, he wrote Kidnapped ,  Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and A Child’s Garden of Verses.

Stevenson and his family left San Francisco in 1888 on their own yacht, the Casco .  For a year they explored the South Pacific. Stevenson had Tuberculosis, so he was also seeking a warm climate for his lungs.  Finally, they settled in American Samoa, building the home on the hills above Apia.

They purchased 127 hectares (314 acres) of pristine land on the slopes of Mout Vaea.

Stevenson’s estate is named Vailima or “Five Waters” after the 5 streams crossing the property.  The estate is surrounded by 30-acres of beautiful botanical gardens, with both ornamental and native flowers and plants. For example, I saw numerous pink and red flowers from various ginger species.

IMG_7045

Their home became restored into a museum to learn about the life and achievements of Stevenson and his family.  Overall, the mansion includes 5 bedrooms, a ballroom, library and the only fireplace in Samoa.  Additionally, a hike goes up to Stevenson’s grave on Mount Vaea with a gorgeous view of Apia Harbor.

Overall, American Samoa Tour

This tropical island is a sanctuary for serene landscapes and beautiful beaches and snorkeling. As a writer myself, I enjoyed exploring America Samoa through the lens of the author, Robert Louis Stevenson. Overall, the pristine scenery and culture make up the story for all of us to experience for ourselves.

The Ultimate 7-Day Samoa Family Holiday Itinerary

Samoa can be more than just a tropical island beach holiday – it’s an experience..

Whether it's exploring secluded scenic spots, soaking up some South Pacific sun, catching some waves, or wandering through markets filled with the aroma of delicious local produce, there’s something in Samoa for every family holiday. In Samoa, locals love children, and their laid-back attitude makes every visitor feel welcome, both within the resorts and beyond.

To see as much as possible in 7-days while keeping it chilled, it’s recommended to base yourself for 2 days on the north coast of Upolu, 2 nights on Savai’i Island ,and 2 nights on the south-east coast of Upolu. And you can easily rent a car to explore the island on your own.

Arrival, Cultural Immersion

Spend the first part of your stay in Upolu. At just 75 kilometres (47 miles) long and 1,125 square kilometres (434 square miles) in total area, Upolu is small enough to easily explore but packs a lot of natural beauty in a small space.

Day: Samoa Culture Village, Apia

Why not start your family adventure in Samoa by getting an immersion into the culture of Samoa? The Samoa Culture Village in Apia is the perfect place for this. The whole family can observe tapa making, traditional tattooing, carving cultural artefacts or Umu preparation (earth oven) in an interactive environment.

Evening: Fiafia Night

/Content/SiteResources/PAGE/684/ba57307a-ba2b-41f0-aa08-f1e8a20a25e9/2-fiafia-opt2.jpg

Fiafia means gathering or celebration, and visitors can expect to experience just that. See traditional dancing as it’s been performed for more than 3000 years (and have a go yourself), and you’ll also have the chance to eat from a traditional buffet feast. Don’t leave Samoa without experiencing a fiafia night at a local resort or hotel.

Uncover Two Local Legends

Day: robert louis stevenson museum, apia .

One of Samoa's most famous residents was Scottish writer Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850-1895). The author and poet is best known for his novels Treasure Island (1881), Kidnapped (1886) and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886). In honour of his memory, his residence was converted into what is now known today as the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum and includes excerpts from his work and family memorabilia.

Afternoon: Papaseea Sliding Rock, Apia

Brave Mother Nature's waterslides and slide down these naturally formed rockslides that have been worn down by thousands of years of running water. There's one 5m slide and three smaller ones at the base of the steps for sliding and swimming. One of the most picturesque and affordable sites in Samoa, Papase'ea is ideal for cooling off on a hot day.

Transfer to Savai’i, Samoa’s Hidden Paradise

Cloaked in a pristine rainforest teeming with birdlife, Savai’i is often referred to as the “real Samoa” where locals enjoy a laid-back, traditional way of life.

Catch one of the two ferries servicing the Upolu to Savai’i route which is approximately a one-hour journey. You can also take your rental vehicle with you on the ferry (book at least two days in advance).

Day: Afu Aau Waterfall

The Afu Aau Waterfall, also known as Olemoe Falls, is a spectacular waterfall in south-eastern Savai'i that plunges from the rainforest deep into a fresh-water swimming pool. Access is along a dirt road which is maintained by the village. The pool is deep but gets shallow towards the outer rim. The fall eventually flows into three other smaller separate falls offering a truly enchanting experience for visitors.

Afternoon: Alofaaga Blowholes

/Content/SiteResources/PAGE/684/aabd55e2-9de2-4785-8343-66b008a3bd0e/5-blowholes.jpg

Also known as the Taga Blowholes, these powerful blowholes are located in the district of Palauli. The entrance to the blowholes is in the village of Taga and are well worth making time for. As strong waves are pushed through the lava tubes, explosions of water reach dozens of metres high. The locals like to throw coconuts into the streams, where they explode dramatically.

Get Amongst Nature

Day: salelaula lava fields.

Explore and take photos at the site of the 1905 volcanic eruption which lasted for 6 years and devastated the northeast part of Savaii island. Highlights include the half-buried church amongst the forest, an untouched virgin grave and lava mounds.

Afternoon: Relax and Enjoy Samoa’s Natural Aqua Wonderland

/Content/SiteResources/PAGE/684/4f06ed4e-2275-4d45-b331-78230ebfc41e/1-family-holiday-header.jpg

We recommend you spend plenty of time at the beautiful white sandy beaches as well as in and on the clear warm waters. With most resorts offering everything you need on your doorstep, Savai'i is the place to unwind without the distraction of TV or phones because the kids will have more than enough snorkelling, kayaking, and swimming to keep them occupied.

Transfer Back to Upolu, Uncover the South-East Corner

Catch the ferry back to Upolu – times depend on the day of departure, particularly Sundays which have different ferry departure times than during the week. The South-East Coast is home to many of Samoa’s must-dos, including Sua Trench and Lalomanu Beach.

Morning: To Sua Ocean Trench

/Content/SiteResources/PAGE/684/247b8081-2788-4a8e-a117-25d5d28d3f3f/9-to-sua.jpg

This giant swimming hole is one of the most unique historical sites located on the coastal side of Upolu in the village of Lotofaga. To-sua means 'giant swimming hole', and this one is 30-metres deep and accessible via a ladder to a long platform which has been built for easy access in the pool.

Afternoon: Lalomanu Beach

For the rest of the afternoon, grab your towel and beach bag and settle in on Lalomanu Beach. The white sandy shoreline is one of the most popular beaches in Samoa. Lalomanu Beach offers a protected marine reserve in a crystal-clear lagoon where you can marvel at over 900 species of fish or, for a treat the kids won’t soon forget, head to Namu’a Island to swim with endangered green turtles in a protected sanctuary.

Explore Ancient and Modern Samoan Sites

Morning: o le pupu-pue national park.

The combination of tropical climate and fertile soil means Samoa’s rainforests are thick, lush, and teeming with wildlife. One of the best rainforest expeditions is O Le Pupu-Pue National Park which runs from the southern coast up into the mountainous interior of the island.

Afternoon: Sinalei’s Fa’a Samoa Tour

Journey to one of Samoa’s oldest villages, Poutasi, to discover the Fa’a Samoa (the Samoan Way). You’ll cruise through these mini-communities on a local bus before immersing yourself in a full day of Samoan culture including a customary welcome by village chiefs, and trying your hand at the ancient games of Taulafoga (coconut tossing) and Tagati’a (spear throwing).

Relax and enjoy the spoils of your accommodation before catching a return flight. Be sure to allow ample travel time to arrive at the Faleolo International airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure time. The South-East corner of Upolu is approximately 2 hours from the airport.
